  • Three-pointer: Ugly starts
    October 25, 2017

The NBA regular season has picked up where it left off after a summer that had more plot twists than Showtime's "Shameless," which happily returns next month. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis have served notice that they might replace Russell Westbrook and James Harden as the MVP candidates we're most talking about and Golden State has actually lost two more games than some believed possible.

As of this writing, the best the defending champs can do now is 80-2.

Dwyane Wade has already volunteered to come off the bench because a starter's role on a team he joined weeks ago doesn't suit him, yet Jameer Nelson was in there closing out the final minutes of New Orleans' only win of the season hours after joining the team because he was head coach Alvin Gentry's best option at the point and will continue to be until Rajon Rondo gets healthy.

In the week's 3-pointer, we'll take a look at situations to be aware of if you're wagering on the NBA.

    Stressed-out Pelicans

The aforementioned Davis, who looks to be in the best physical shape of his young career, left Tuesday night's loss at Portland in the first quarter due to knee pain. Despite a 39-point, 13-rebound night from DeMarcus Cousins, the Pelicans faded to fall 103-93 and then held their breath until Davis' MRI results came back.

Fortunately, he came back clean and will likely be back by the end of the week, but you definitely don't want to get stuck without his services and should wait to see him get through a game before getting back on New Orleans.

Even with their start in the lineup, the Pels looked pretty shaky falling apart in their only win of the season on Sunday night as a 21-point third-quarter lead became a five-point deficit in 10 minutes of action. That's disconcerting. No team with two of the top 10 frontcourt players in the league should ever be settling for either pulling up from 3-point range against one of the youngest teams out there.

Nelson ended up coming in and rescuing the night simply by getting the offense better situated to take advantage of its strengths. He played 30 minutes in the loss to Portland, which is entirely too many but apparently necessary just to give the Pelicans a fighting chance.

Since Ian Clark is a spot up shooter and not a playmaker, Tony Allen is a defender and not a ball handler and E'Twuan Moore knows his limiations and tends to be streaky, entirely too much is on Jrue Holiday's plate. He's struggled with his shot out of the gate and desperately needs the oxygen Nelson's arrival has supplied. Dante Cunningham, who has had to man the small forward spot more than the team envisioned since Solomon Hill tore his hamstring in late August and won't be back until February, doesn't provide much offense and is more of a glue guy. Clark a was a -16 against the Lakers. Darius Miller was a -13 against the Blazers.

Until Rondo comes back next month from sports hernia surgery and head coach Alvin Gentry can better assemble rotations, the Pelicans are likely to struggle. If Davis isn't the version of himself he put on display during a dominant first few games, there just isn't enough depth on the roster for New Orleans to be successful. After visiting Sacramento on Thursday, the Pels return home for three games against Cleveland, Orlando and Minnesota, all capable of taking advantage if Davis isn't healthy.

    Suns setting early

Eric Bledsoe may or may not have issued a trade demand on Twitter as head coach Earl Watson was being fired three games in, but there's no question he wanted out. After the Phoenix Suns were blown out by 42 points against the Clippers, starting off 0-3, Watson paid with his job.

Bledsoe tweeted "I don't want to be here" on Sunday as news that the team was moving on from Watson as head coach was breaking, so the fact he's played his last game in a Phoenix uniform is no surprise. It was funny to hear Bledsoe explained the tweet by claiming he was referring to the hair salon he was at, but him wanting out of a bad situation is understandable.

The Suns lost their season opener 124-76 against a Portland team missing a suspended C.J. McCollum. They then allowed the Lakers to leave their building with a 132-130 win on the second night of a back-to-back. Despite being the more rested team, players couldn't be bothered to play defense, showing a remarkable apathy that made the on-court product look like a pickup game at your local L.A. Fitness.

They then hit the road to L.A.'s Staples Center and caught a 130-88 loss that was ultimately the final straw in keeping Watson in the head seat. Jay Triano, formerly of the Raptors and Canada's national basketball team, gets the interim gig, but this doesn't appear to be a situation where a new voice will make a huge difference. Bledsoe was the team's top defender, backed up by Tyler Ulis, who is generally listed as 5-foot-10.

Although they bounced back with a 117-114 home win over Sacramento on Monday, the Suns are still likely going to be a disaster until they get some value back from Bledsoe. Rookie backup point guard Mike James, a two-way player who wouldn't have been in the game had it not been for the co-captain's removal, made the winning basket and will get time alongside Ulis. Teams are going to continue having their way with a Suns defense surrendering over 125 points per game.

Devin Booker and rookie Josh Jackson are the right guys to build around since this team is essentially building from the ground up, but Bledsoe blew up his trade value since teams now know GM Ryan McDonough has no choice but to find him a new home. Tyson Chandler and Jared Dudley are left to be the backbone of a painfully young team, and Dudley wasn't scheduled to debut this season until Monday night against Sacramento. Following a Wednesday night date with a Utah defense that has opened as the NBA's best, this group hits the road for five games. They'll be worth fading on most nights until oddsmakers go to astronomical spreads to try and capitalize on that strategy.

    Least in the East

Speaking of the strategy to capitalize on the betting public's desire to wager against woeful teams, beware laying too many points with the remaining winless East teams, the Bulls and Knicks, in addition to potentially the worst team in the conference, the rebuilding Hawks.

Atlanta point guard Dennis Schroder will miss a few games due to a nasty ankle sprain suffered in Sunday's loss in Brooklyn, leaving point guard duties in the hands of young Malcolm Delaney, Isaiah Taylor and Josh Maggette. If you're asking who those guys are, you're doing so in unison with most Hawks fans, who are finding that having a program is a must this season. Young forwards Taurean Waller-Prince and John Collins are promising, but the Hawks are going to do a lot of losing this season and missing the catalyst who led them to an opening night win in Dallas was something their retooled roster couldn't afford. AJC writer Michael Cunningham reports that Schroder won't travel to Chicago for Thursday night's date with the Bulls, which means he's out until at least Friday when Denver comes through town. Starting power forward Ersan Ilyasova will make the trip to face the Bulls and will likely be a game-time decision.

If you weren't aware, two of the guys vying for a starting forward spot with the Bulls knocked each other contention, almost quite literally. Bobby Portis hit Nikola Mirotic so hard that the swelling needed to go down just to determine the damage, resulting in an eight-game suspension for the Arkansas product. Finnish lottery pick Lauri Markkanen has taken the job and produced, but the Bulls are currently sporting a lineup so flawed that guard Jerian Grant is currently being introduced last. You know, the spot Michael Jordan once held. He and Justin Holiday played well enough against the Cavs to get the cover as a 15-point underdog on Tuesday night, but they opened as a 1.5-point favorite against visiting Atlanta. It's unlikely you'll see the Bulls laying points again until Nov. 15 at the earliest, which is when Sacramento comes through town. That's 10 games from now.

The Knicks are also still awful, but at least have Kristaps Porzingis healthy enough to give the team a chance. He shot 3-for-14 in Tuesday's 110-89 loss in Boston, contributing to a 1-for-12 effort from e-point range that helped waste a 16-point, 19-rebound effort from Enes Kanter.

Guard play is likely to be a major issue for New York with Ramon Sessions and the unretired Jarrett Jack holding down the point and Courtney Lee joining Tim Hardaway, Jr. in starting on the wing. If they can find a way to get Bledsoe, they should. In the mean time, it's clear that in the early going, books are going to throw a ton of points down and dare you to take them after watching the blowout losses pile up early. Although the natural and correct inclination is to take points, ask yourself why the books are offering you so many before you take them, because there's likely a very good reason.

    • Early theme to NBA season: You score, I score, we all score
      October 25, 2017

Maybe it's the 3-ball. Perhaps it's all about small ball.

Whatever the reasons, NBA teams had few problems putting the ball in the basket and piling up points through the first week of the regular season.

A third of the league is averaging 110 or more, and the Brooklyn Nets became the first team to score 115 in their first four games in 32 years - and they only won half of them, because they were giving up more than 120 a night.

The floor is open and offenses are flowing - with ease.

''The game has changed. Offense has changed in the last 10 years radically just because the players are getting better, they shoot the ball better, offense has opened up, 3-point line, everybody shoots now,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''So the offense has changed radically. Defense traditionally has not changed that much.''

It's advantage offense in a big, entertaining fashion.

D'Antoni ran the NBA's most potent offense when he was in Phoenix a decade ago, and in 2006-07 the Suns were the only team to average 110 for the season, finishing at 110.2.

That would have barely cracked the top 10 entering Tuesday's play. The Nets - yes, the Nets - are leading the way, averaging 123.5 a night. The system of playing small and firing 3-pointers may have been sneered at then, but it's practically becoming the norm now.

''It's hard to keep your bigs in the game now, so there's nobody tall at the rim anymore,'' Orlando coach Frank Vogel said. ''I think that's made offense a lot easier. It's really just kind of a style of play and stylistically teams are playing with more shooting and more guards and more speed and less rim protection around the basket, so it's definitely benefited the offense.''

He had Roy Hibbert in that role when he was in Indiana, and the Pacers rode their rugged defense toward the top of the Eastern Conference. Now, Vogel's Magic have yielded 126 and 121 while splitting a pair of games against the Nets.

Brooklyn is the first team since the Lakers, Pacers and Pistons in 1985-86 to open with four straight 115-point games.

D'Antoni believes defenses will have to evolve because ''they can't keep up with the offense.''

That, NBA fans, is an understatement.

      ---

      WEEK 1 MVP

Nobody has ever started an NBA season quite like Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Greek Freak put up 147 points, 43 rebounds and 21 assists during the Bucks' 3-1 start, stats that the NBA said had never been reached in a player's first four games. He scored at least 30 points in every game, including a career-high 44 against Portland.

Antetokounmpo is also off to the best scoring start in Bucks history. Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 146 in 1970-71, when he won his first of two straight MVP awards.

Antetokounmpo might be on his way to one. The online sportsbook Bovada lowered his odds from 10 to 1 in the preseason to 5 to 2 Monday, listing him as its current MVP favorite.

      ---

Other things to watch around the league:

      HOMECOMING WEEK:
DeMarcus Cousins returns to Sacramento for the first time since his midseason trade to New Orleans last season when the Pelicans visit the Kings on Thursday. The next night, Paul Millsap is back in Atlanta for the first time since moving West to the Denver Nuggets over the summer.

MOVING ON UP: San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich needs four wins to pass Phil Jackson and move into sixth place of the NBA's career list. Jackson had 1,155 victories in the regular season. Popovich has 1,152 entering the Spurs' game in Miami on Wednesday.

GEORGE'S GUESTS: Paul George will see his old Indiana mates Wednesday when the Pacers visit Oklahoma City for the first time since surprisingly trading their All-Star forward in the summer.

BACKCOURT BATTLE: Two of the league's best backcourts go head-to-head Friday when John Wall and Bradley Beal lead Washington into Oracle Arena to face Golden State's Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

      ---

STAT LINE OF THE WEEK: Ben Simmons, Philadelphia: 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists Monday in a 97-86 victory over Detroit. The rookie needed just four games for his first career triple-double.

        • NBA roundup: Rockets win on Gordon's buzzer-beater
          October 25, 2017

PHILADELPHIA -- Eric Gordon nailed a 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer as the Houston Rockets defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 105-104 on Wednesday night.

Gordon notched 29 points to lead Houston, which scored the last nine points. James Harden added 27 points and 13 assists for the Rockets, and Clint Capela contributed 16 points, a career-high 20 rebounds and four blocked shots.

J.J. Redick poured in 22 points to pace Philadelphia, which did not score in the final 3:05. Joel Embiid added 21 points, and Robert Covington chipped in 20 for the 76ers.

          Nets 112, Cavaliers 107

NEW YORK -- Spencer Dinwiddie scored a career-high 22 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 43 seconds remaining as Brooklyn overcame a triple-double by LeBron James to defeat Cleveland.

Dinwiddie made his 20th career start and first in place of D'Angelo Russell (right knee sprain). He shot 7-for-13, with his biggest basket coming after the Nets blew a 12-point lead. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Allen Crabbe added 19 points apiece for Brooklyn.

James played point guard for the second straight night and totaled 29 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. He also committed eight turnovers, two shy of his career worst. Kyle Korver added 22 points for the Cavaliers, who committed 21 turnovers.

          Warriors 117, Raptors 112

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry scored 30 points and Kevin Durant added 29, including key buckets down the stretch, as Golden State rallied past Toronto.

After the Raptors rallied from 11 points down in the fourth quarter to take a stunning five-point lead, Curry scored in traffic with 1:28 left and Durant tied it with a 3-pointer 26 seconds later. Durant then fed Curry for another 3-pointer with 32 seconds to play, and Curry rounded out the victory with two free throws.

DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 24 points.

          Thunder 114, Pacers 96

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook posted his 81st career triple-double with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists, and Oklahoma City defeated Indiana as Paul George won his first game against his old team.

Carmelo Anthony recorded 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunder. George wasn't featured much -- he scored only 10 points on eight shots in 19 minutes and fouled out with 6:13 to play.

Instead, former Oklahoma City guard and current Pacers leading scorer Victor Oladipo got a bit of revenge against his former team in the losing effort. Oladipo led Indiana with a season-high 35 points on 11-for-18 shooting and scored 21 points in the first half.

          Spurs 117, Heat 100

MIAMI -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 31 points to lead unbeaten San Antonio past Miami.

The Spurs also received strong bench play from Rudy Gay (season-high 22 points) and Manu Ginobili (14 points). San Antonio rookie guard Brandon Paul, who went undrafted in 2013, scored seven points -- the first of his NBA career -- after playing pro ball the past four years primarily in Russia, Turkey and Spain.

Tyler Johnson scored a team-high 23 points off the bench, but the Heat had their two-game win streak snapped. James Johnson added 21 points.

          Suns 97, Jazz 88

PHOENIX -- TJ Warren scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half, and Phoenix recorded its second victory in as many tries under interim coach Jay Triano.

Alex Len (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Tyler Ulis (13 points, five assists) led a strong bench effort for the Suns. Devin Booker added 17 points for Phoenix, which was blown out twice while losing its first three games.

Rodney Hood returned from injury to score 22 points for the Jazz, who had beaten the Suns seven straight times but never led Wednesday. Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Ricky Rubio had 15 points and 11 assists for Utah.

          Lakers 102, Wizards 99 (OT)

LOS ANGELES -- Brandon Ingram had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Los Angeles rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter and defeated Washington in overtime.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sank a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left in overtime to give the Lakers a 100-99 lead, and Julius Randle finished off a two-on-one break with a dunk with 4.5 seconds remaining. Los Angeles rookie Lonzo Ball recorded six points, 10 assists and eight rebounds while shooting 2-for-11 from the floor, 0-for-5 from 3-point range.

Bradley Beal scored 28 points, John Wall had 18 points and nine assists, and Marcin Gortat contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards. Washington was trying to start 4-0 for the first time since 1978.

          Mavericks 103, Grizzlies 94

DALLAS -- Rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. scored 19 points as Dallas secured its first victory by knocking off previously undefeated Memphis.

Wesley Matthews added 16 points for the Mavericks, who avoided a second straight 0-5 start. Harrison Barnes scored 15 and Dirk Nowitzki added 13 points. Dallas also had big contributions from J.J. Barea (14 points) and Yogi Ferrell (10 points) off the bench.

Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 26 points (9-of-15 shooting) and 11 rebounds but went an uncharacteristic 3 of 8 at the foul line. Mike Conley scored 21, and reserve Tyreke Evans was the only Memphis player scoring in double figures with 13.

          Pistons 122, Timberwolves 101

DETROIT -- Tobias Harris tied his career high with 34 points, and Detroit cruised to a victory over Minnesota.

Harris scored all of his points from the field, making 14 of 24 field-goal attempts, including a 6-for-9 performance from long range. Avery Bradley supplied 20 points, and Andre Drummond contributed 15 points with 15 rebounds for the Pistons.

Karl-Anthony Towns' 23 points and 10 rebounds led the Timberwolves. Andrew Wiggins tossed in 21 points and Jeff Teague added 18 for Minnesota.

          Hornets 110, Nuggets 93

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Frank Kaminsky and rookie Malik Monk combined for 37 points off the bench, and Charlotte rolled to a victory over Denver.

Kaminsky scored 20 points and Monk had a career-high 17 on a night when the Hornets led by as many as 25 in the first half and pushed the lead up to 27 in the third quarter. Charlotte also got 15 points and 19 rebounds from Dwight Howard, and Kemba Walker got hot late to finish with 19 points. Jeremy Lamb scored 16.

Nikola Jokic and Gary Harris led the Nuggets with 18 points apiece, and Jamal Murray scored 16.

                  • AP Source: Pelicans adding veteran forward Josh Smith
                    October 25, 2017

NEW ORLEANS (AP) A person familiar with the deal says the New Orleans Pelicans are adding veteran forward Josh Smith to the roster and that Smith is expected to join the team on Thursday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Wednesday night because paperwork on a contract was not complete.

The 6-foot-9 Smith, who most recently played for Maccabi Haifa in Israel, joins New Orleans on the heels of power forward Anthony Davis' left knee injury during a Pelicans loss at Portland on Tuesday night. Davis has not been diagnosed with structural damage but is questionable for Thursday night's game in Sacramento.

New Orleans' agreement with the 31-year-old Smith was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

In 12 NBA seasons between 2004 and 2016, Smith has career averages of 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Stern calls for NBA changes of marijuana rules
                    October 25, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Former NBA Commissioner David Stern believes medicinal marijuana use by players should be allowed, but the league says it won't allow it for recreational use.

Stern was interviewed by ex-NBA player Al Harrington for the website Uninterrupted's documentary ''Concept of Cannabis.'' Stern said he thought there was ''universal agreement that marijuana for medical purposes should be completely legal.''

Adam Silver, who replaced Stern as commissioner in 2014, has said he is interested in studying more about the safety of medicinal marijuana. But Stern, who spent 30 years as commissioner, seemed ready to go a step further in his interview.

''I think we have to change the Collective Bargaining Agreement and let you do what is legal in your state,'' he said. ''If marijuana is now in the process of being legalized, I think you should be allowed to do what's legal in your state.''

Marijuana is listed as a prohibited substance on the league's anti-drug program, and players can be fined or suspended for multiple positive tests.

''While Commissioner Silver has said that we are interested in better understanding the safety and efficacy of medical marijuana, our position remains unchanged regarding the use by current NBA players of marijuana for recreational purposes,'' NBA spokesman Mike Bass said.

                      October 26, 2017

                      Up to Speed

Since Monday, favorites have gone 14-10 straight up while underdogs have posted a 12-11-1 record against the spread. Bettors riding the home ‘dogs on Wednesday wound up going 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS with big victories posted by the Nets (+8, +270 ML) over the Cavaliers and the Suns (+7.5, +260 ML) over the Jazz. Dallas wound up earning its first win by beating Memphis 103-94 at home and the L.A. Lakers handed the Washington their first loss of the season with a 102-99 overtime victory at the Staples Center.

Even though scoring is up through the first week of the season, the oddsmakers have already adjusted to the totals market correctly with some inflated numbers. The days of totals closing below 200 are going to be very rare this season. Through three days of action this week, the ‘under’ is 17-7 (71%) and that includes an 8-2 mark to the low side last night.

                      Welcome Mat?

DeMarcus Cousins will face his former team on Thursday as New Orleans (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) and Sacramento (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) meet from the Golden 1 Center.

The big man still isn’t happy with the Kings organization after he was dealt to New Orleans last February. In a recent in interview, Cousins shared his thoughts.

"My representatives, they told me I shouldn't stay," Cousins said of refusing "an opportunity to leave" when the team hired George Karl in 2015 to coach the team. "But, you know, I guess being stubborn or loyal, I wanted to make things work. How you going to be loyal to something that ain't loyal to any player that's ever played the game? I was a fool."

Sacramento opened as a short favorite (-2) and the line has already swung the other way with New Orleans listed as the betting 'chalk' (-1.5). The line would be higher if New Orleans All-Star Anthony Davis (knee) was healthy. He’s listed as ‘doubtful’ as of Thursday morning after knocking his knees in Tuesday’s 103-93 loss at Portland.

Even though the pair share the same record, New Orleans has played three playoff contenders while Sacramento’s last three opponents have at least three-plus losses.

The Kings were competitive in their home opener last Wednesday, but still came up short in a 105-100 loss to the Rockets.

The home team won and covered all three meetings last season and Cousins was on the winning team in each game, winning twice with Sacramento before getting revenge against the Kings in the “Big Easy” after the trade. In that win, Cousins torched his former team for a game-high 37 points and 13 rebounds as New Orleans cruised to a 117-89 blowout. The ‘under’ connected in all three games last season.

Tip-off is set for 10:35 p.m. ET and TNT will provide national coverage.

                      Looking for Respect

Milwaukee (3-1 SU, 2-1-1 ATS) will host Boston (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) at the Bradley Center tonight and TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 8:05 p.m. ET.

This will be a quick rematch as the Bucks dropped the Celtics 108-100 last Tuesday as 1 ½-point road underdogs. Boston actually led this game going into the fourth quarter by four points but Milwaukee closed the game 32-20 as the Celtics ran out of gas after dealing with Cavaliers one night earlier and of course the emotional loss of Gordon Hayward to injury.

Even though a lot of pundits may believe Milwaukee is better than Boston, the oddsmakers still have the Celtics (4/1) as the second choice to win the East behind Cleveland while the Bucks are sitting at 16/1.

For this matchup, Milwaukee opened as a 3 ½-point favorite and that number quickly moved to four.

After starting 0-2, Boston has won back-to-back games albeit against the 76ers and Knicks. Milwaukee sits above that pair and another win in this spot would boost its resume even more.

Prior to the outcome last week, Boston was on a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS run against Milwaukee.

The total was bet down early from 207 to 205 ½. Boston has leaned ‘under’ (3-1) while the Bucks have been on the other side of the fence with a 3-1 ‘over’ mark.

                      Home-and-Home

The Mavericks and Grizzlies will play for the second straight night after meeting in the Lone Star State on Wednesday. As mentioned above, Dallas captured its first win of the season (103-94) and that was also the first setback this season for Memphis. Including that win, that Mavericks are now 6-2 both SU and ATS in their last eight games versus the Grizzlies.

Dallas has only played one road game this season and it was run 107-91 at Houston. Memphis has gone 2-0 both SU and ATS at home this season, with both wins coming by double digits.

The Grizzlies have seen all four of their games go ‘under’ this season and tonight’s total (196 ½) is expecting another low-scoring affair.

                      Western Test

Bettors could be scratching their heads on this game as the Clippers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) and Trail Blazers (3-1 SU, 3-0-1 ATS) square off from the Moda Center. I thought this line would be closer to pick ‘em or even have Los Angeles listed as a road favorite but will find out soon enough if my rating is better than oddsmakers. Portland opened -2 and is up to -3 at a few betting shops.

The Clippers haven’t played any serious contenders thus far, but they have won and covered all of their games easily. What’s impressive is the defense, which is leading the league in scoring at 88 points per game and that’s helped the ‘under’ post a 3-0 mark.

Portland’s offense (112.8 PPG) will be a much stiffer test for Los Angeles but you could question those early numbers too considering the Trail Blazers started the season against the defenseless Suns and Pacers. Make a note that Portland is 3-1 to the ‘under’ so far.

The Clippers got the best of the Trail Blazers last season, winning all three of their encounters and they covered two of the victories. They only visited the Moda Center once and they captured a 114-106 victory.

                      If Necessary

With the NBA being so top-heavy, you’re going to have matchups on a nightly basis that are often unwatchable and sometimes not even worth wagering on. This matchup between Atlanta (1-3 SU, 1-2-1 ATS) and Chicago (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) certainly meets that criteria. The Bulls opened as 2 ½-point home favorites after being listed as double-digit underdogs in their first three games.

Atlanta has been an underdog in every game so far, which isn’t surprising since the NBA somehow let the schedule makers have the club start the season with five straight on the road. Also, the Hawks will likely be without point guard Dennis Shroder (ankle) for the fourth consecutive game on Tuesday. In the lone game Atlanta won at Dallas (117-111) last Wednesday, the super-fast point guard finished with a game-high 28 points and added seven assists.

Chicago had its home opener last Saturday and it dropped an 87-77 decision to San Antonio at home. The Bulls rebounded offensively in Tuesday’s loss at Cleveland (119-112) by hitting 17-of-33 (52%) bombs from 3-point land. If Fred Hoiberg’s team continues that trend, the Bulls won’t be winless for long.

For what it’s worth, Atlanta has won and covered eight of the last 10 meetings between the pair.
