Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

      13) Auburn 40, Georgia 17— Tigers outgained Georgia 488-230, handed Dawgs their first loss of the year in convincing style. Georgia can still get to the playoff by winning the SEC title game. Auburn’s win here makes the Iron Bowl very interesting.

      12) Alabama 31, Mississippi State 24— This was a really good game; Crimson Tide scored a TD with 0:25 left for the win. Bulldogs played their hearts out, but didn’t have enough. Alabama averaged 12.7 yards per pass attempt.

      11) Upsets of the Week:
      South Alabama (+11.5) 24, Arkansas State 19
      North Carolina (+9.5) 34, Pittsburgh 31
      Old Dominion (+9) 37, FIU 30
      UAV (+7) 24, Tex-San Antonio 19
      Stanford (+5.5) 30, Washington 22

      10) Miami 41, Notre Dame 8— You could almost hear Michael Irvin cackling as he watched this beatdown. Game was 27-0 at the half; Miami forced 4+ turnovers for the 4th game in a row, first team to do that since Rutgers in 2011.

      9) Oklahoma State 49, Iowa State 42— Cowboys play interesting games; they lost 62-52 last week at Oklahoma; they fell behind 14-0 early here, but they gained 522 yards and picked off a pass in the end zone in the last few seconds to preserve the win.

      8) Clemson 31, Florida State 14— Seminoles are 3-6; they play a I-AA team next week, then go to Florida. They also re-scheduled the UL-Monroe game for Dec 2, hoping they win the Florida game— a 6-6 finish would put them in a bowl game- they need the extra practices for next year.

      7) Washington State 33, Utah 25— Utes turned ball over seven times (four INTs, three fumbles) yet somehow only lost by 8 points. Wazzu converted 10-21 on third down, but ran ball for only 27 yards on 17 carries.

      6) Northwestern 23, Purdue 13— Solid win/cover for Wildcats, who won the previous three games, all in overtime. Northwestern is 7-3, a very shaky 7-3, but 7-3 nonetheless.

      5) Oklahoma 38, TCU 20— Surprisingly easy win for the Sooners; it was 38-14 at halftime. Looks like Baker Mayfield will win the Heisman Trophy, since most writers don’t stay up late enough to watch Stanford games.

I’m still trying to figure out why Mayfield never got a scholarship at Texas Tech— pretty good player.

      4) South Carolina 28, Florida 20— Gamecocks are 7-3— they’re 5-1 in games decided by 8 or less points. Jake Bentley threw three picks in this game, but did just enough for Carolina to beat the Gators, who have lost five straight games and are coach-hunting as we speak.

      3) Boise State 59, Colorado State 52 OT— Horrific loss for Rams, who are now 0-7 vs Boise- they led this game 28-3 in 2nd quarter, 35-17 at half. Game ended around 2:55am here in the east.

Both teams had 33 first downs. Colorado State is only 6-5, losing their last three games.

      2) Wyoming 28, Air Force 14- Wyoming led this game 21-0 in second quarter, then started jerking around with trick plays, flea-flickers and all. On one of the trick plays, star QB Josh Allen took a shot on his throwing shoulder and got hurt- he threw one pass in the third quarter and look himself out, effectively ending Wyoming’s season.

      1) Wake Forest 64, Syracuse 43— Deacons trailed 38-24 at halftime, then outscored the hosts 40-5 in the second half, and became bowl eligible. Dave Clawson could easily get on the short list for the Tennessee head coaching job; he used to be OC in Knoxville.

            • Celtics edge Raps for 12th straight
              November 12, 2017

BOSTON (AP) Al Horford had 21 points in his return from a two-game absence for a concussion and the Boston Celtics hung on to beat the Toronto Raptors 95-94 on Sunday for their 12th straight victory.

Boston (12-2) was playing without Kyrie Irving after he took an inadvertent elbow to the face from teammate Aron Baynes on Friday night against Charlotte. Irving has a minor facial fracture but has not been diagnosed with a concussion as initially feared.

Jaylen Brown added 18 points, and Terry Rozier helped fill in for Irving with 16 points off the bench. Boston shot just 40.2 percent from the field.

DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points, and Kyle Lowry had 19 points and seven assists for Toronto. The Raptors dropped to 7-5 after winning two straight.

Jayson Tatum's acrobatic layup with 1:26 remaining in the fourth quarter put the Celtics up 95-90.

DeRozan missed a potential go-ahead stepback jumper with 19 seconds remaining. Tatum got the rebound, but elbowed Fred VanVleet in the face for an offensive foul that was confirmed by video review.

DeRozan had another look to give Toronto the win, but missed a turnaround jumper with 2 seconds left. Serge Ibaka scooped up the rebound, but lost the ball as time expired.

              THUNDER 112, MAVERICKS 99

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Paul George scored 37 points, Russell Westbrook added 27 and Oklahoma City overcame the absence of two regular starters to beat Dallas.

Carmelo Anthony was ruled out about an hour before tipoff because of a sore lower back, and starting center Steven Adams sat out with a right calf contusion.

Without Anthony, the Thunder's other two superstars carried the offensive load, fueling a 26-10 run in the third quarter that broke open what had been a tight game. Oklahoma City improved to 6-7, missing its second straight after four consecutive losses.

Harrison Barnes had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks. They have dropped nine of their last 10 games to fall to 2-12.

              ROCKETS 118, PACERS 95

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - James Harden had 26 points and 15 assists and Houston beat Indiana.

Indianapolis native Eric Gordon had 21 points for Houston, and Clint Capela had 20 points and 17 rebounds. The Rockets overwhelmed the Pacers from the start, jumping out to a 13-2 lead. Houston continued to pile it on early and often, outscoring the Pacers 24-9 during the first 6 minutes.

Victor Oladipo had 28 points for Indiana.

              PISTONS 112, HEAT 103

DETROIT (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 25 points and Avery Bradley added 24 points in Detroit's victory over Miami.

Reggie Jackson scored 17 points, rookie Luke Kennard had 14 and Andre Drummond added eight points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons. At 10-3, they are second behind Boston in the Eastern Conference and off to their best start since going 10-2 in 2005-06.

Hassan Whiteside had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Miami.

              • Jazz C Gobert out with bruised knee
                November 12, 2017

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert will miss at least four weeks due to a bone bruise in his knee, the team announced Sunday.

Utah announced that an MRI showed a right tibia contusion and Gobert will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

Gobert was injured in the third quarter of Friday's 84-74 loss to the Miami Heat when he collided with Heat guard Dion Waiters chasing down a loose ball near the foul line. Waiters collided with Gobert's right knee and the 7-foot-1 Frenchman limped off the court before returning to finish the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

After the game, Gobert said it was "dirty play" according to the Deseret News. Before Miami's game in Detroit on Sunday, Waiters denied it was a dirty play.

"I went for the ball, tell him to get out of his feelings," Waiters told the Miami Herald. "And that's what it is, just like that."

Utah will likely use 6-foot-10 forward Derrick Favors as its starting center. Favors, who is two inches shorter than Gobert, recorded his first double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's 114-106 win over the Brooklyn Nets.

Gobert is averaging 13.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and shooting 62.6 percent in 12 games this season. Gobert, who is nicknamed "The Stifle Tower", also leads the NBA with 2.5 blocked shots per game.

                • Nets G Russell has knee contusion
                  November 12, 2017

Brooklyn Nets guard D'Angelo Russell was diagnosed with a left knee contusion, the team announced Sunday.

Russell was examined Sunday by team doctors and underwent an MRI and the Nets said "return to play updates will be provided as appropriate."

Russell scored 26 points in Saturday's 114-106 loss at Utah but injured his left knee with 2:57 remaining after making contact with a defender. Russell landed awkwardly and hobbled to the bench before going to the locker room.

Before the Nets announced the injury, ESPN reported Russell will miss "several games." The Nets are scheduled to return home Tuesday against the Boston Celtics and host the Golden State Warriors next Sunday.

The diagnosis is better than the last time a Nets guard suffered a knee injury. In the season opener, Jeremy Lin tore the patella tendon in his right knee and underwent season-ending surgery.

Last season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Russell missed 11 games with left knee soreness in November and December. He also missed three games in January with a right knee injury and eventually underwent platelet-rich plasma injections.

Russell is averaging 20.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds after being acquired in a June trade for Brook Lopez.

Russell missed Brooklyn's win over Cleveland on Oct. 25 with a right knee sprain and Spencer Dinwiddie scored 22 points in his place.

Dinwiddie also sat out Saturday's game with a hamstring injury and, if healthy, would start for Russell.

Game of the Night: Magic at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

A battle of division leaders takes place at Oracle Arena although only one of these teams were predicted to be atop their division at this point. We know what Golden State (10-3 SU, 7-6 ATS) is all about and its credentials, but Orlando (8-5, 7-6 ATS) is playing well through the first month and hope to keep it up on this road trip.

The Magic disappeared on Saturday in a 125-107 setback at Denver as nine-point underdogs, snapping a short two-game winning streak. Frank Vogel’s team began the season with an impressive 6-2 record, including underdog victories over Cleveland, San Antonio, and Memphis. However, Orlando is 2-3 the last five games, including ugly home double-digit losses to Chicago and Boston. The Magic rank fifth in the NBA in points per game at 110.5, while owning the best three-point defense by limiting opponents to 31.5% shooting per contest.

The Warriors are rolling right now by winning and covering six consecutive games, with all six victories coming by 17 points or more. The most recent triumph came over upstart Philadelphia on Saturday, 135-114 as 13 ½-point favorites, led by Kevin Durant’s 29 points as the defending champions shot 58.5% from the floor.

Since 2013, the Warriors have captured eight straight meetings with the Magic, while covering both times last season as hefty 14-point favorites.

                              Stumbling Home

The Clippers (5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS) have dropped seven of eight games since a 4-0 start to the season, capped off by an 0-3 road trip at San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and New Orleans. Los Angeles hosts Philadelphia tonight, as the 76ers (6-6 SU, 8-4 ATS) look to snap a two-game skid on their five-game road swing. Philadelphia was riding a five-game winning streak prior to back-to-back defeats at Sacramento and Golden State, while eclipsing the OVER in six of the past seven contests.

Returning to Staples Center isn’t exactly the formula for a win for Doc Rivers’ squad, who lost four of five on its most recent homestand. The defense was torched on this three-game road swing, allowing at least 111 points in each defeat, while not covering in a loss yet this season. The Clippers have defeated the 76ers five straight times at home, but this is the shortest spread since 2011, when Philadelphia knocked off L.A., 104-94.

                              Hitting their Stride

The Nuggets (8-5 SU, 5-8 ATS) had their expectations raised in the offseason following the pick-up of free agent forward Paul Millsap, but Denver started 1-3. Denver has rebounded lately by winning seven of nine games, including a 5-1 mark on its most recent homestand with the lone loss coming to Golden State. Mike Malone’s team travels to Portland before taking three days off prior to a home game with New Orleans on Friday.

The Blazers (6-6 SU, 4-7-1 ATS) look to snap a two-game skid after dropping a pair of close home decisions to the Grizzlies and Nets by a combined four points. Portland is on the worst ATS run in the league right now at 1-7 ATS following a 3-0-1 ATS start to the season. Last season, the Blazers grabbed three of four meetings from the Nuggets, including both matchups at the Moda Center as Portland has beaten Denver eight straight times at home.

                              Sounds of Silence

The Jazz (6-7 SU, 7-6 ATS) snapped a four-game skid in Saturday’s 114-107 home victory over the Nets as six-point favorites. However, center Rudy Gobert will be sidelined for four weeks after suffering a bone bruise in his right knee against Miami last Friday. Utah hosts Minnesota to close out a four-game homestand before the Jazz venture out east for a four-game road trip starting Wednesday in New York.

The Wolves (7-5 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) knocked off the Jazz in the first meeting this season at Target Center on October 20 by a 100-97 count, but Utah cashed as 4 ½-point underdogs. Minnesota is winless on its current three-game road swing following losses at Golden State and Phoenix, as the Wolves were tripped up by the Suns as 10-point favorites on Saturday, 118-110.

                              Broadway LeBron

The Cavaliers (6-7 SU, 4-8-1 ATS) are looking to reach the .500 mark for the first time since sitting at 3-3 on October 28. Cleveland travels to New York trying to avenge a 114-95 home setback to the Knicks as 10 ½-point favorites October 29. Since LeBron James returned to the Cavaliers in 2014, Cleveland owns a perfect 6-0 record at Madison Square Garden, including covers in each of the past three visits to New York.

The Knicks (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) have taken care of their home business this season with a 6-2 record at the Garden, while scoring at least 108 points in each of their past four home victories. Since starting the campaign at 0-3 SU/ATS, New York has covered seven of its previous nine games, while snapping a nine-game skid to Cleveland in the victory at Quicken Loans Arena last month.

                              Head-to-Head Matchups

-- Sacramento has dropped six straight road games as the Kings continue their three-game road swing at Washington. The Wizards wasted the Kings in their last matchup on October 29 as 7 ½-point favorites, 110-83. Washington has won four consecutive home meetings with Sacramento since 2014.

-- The home team has captured the last six matchups between the Bucks and Grizzlies, who meet in Milwaukee tonight. The Bucks have limited the Grizzlies to 96 points or less in their past four home meetings with Memphis. The Grizzlies finish off a five-game road trip following Saturday’s loss at Houston, while the Bucks are seeking their third straight win.

-- The road squad won the two meetings between the Hawks and Pelicans last season, as Atlanta heads to the Big Easy. The Hawks are riding a three-game skid, while allowing at least 110 points in seven consecutive contests. New Orleans has won four of its past five, while covering each time during this stretch.

-- The Lakers outlasted the Suns, 132-130 last month in Phoenix as the two Pacific division rivals hook up again in the Valley. Los Angeles has dropped the first three contests of a four-game away swing, while scoring 96 points or less each time. The previous six meetings between the Lakers and Suns have sailed OVER the total, while Phoenix is 4-2 in the last six home matchups with Los Angeles.
