  • Pelicans PG Holiday will play Friday
    November 15, 2016

METAIRIE, La. (AP) Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday will play for the first time this season on Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers, general manager Dell Demps said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, guard Tyreke Evans returned to practice on a non-contact basis Tuesday. Demps said it is unclear when Evans will play, but that he appears to be in ''great shape.''

Holiday has been on indefinite leave since summer to care for his wife, retired international soccer star Lauren Holiday, who had brain surgery last month, just weeks after giving birth to the couple's daughter.

The Pelicans play in Orlando on Wednesday night, and Demps said Holiday is slated to practice with the team on Thursday before making his debut the following night in what will be New Orleans' 13th game of the season.

Demps said he expects Holiday's return to be gratifying for Pelicans players and staff on both personal and professional levels.

''He's just a great person - just bringing him back and getting him back with the group, from a social standpoint,'' is most important, Demps said. ''From a basketball standpoint, we don't want to put pressure on him and make him feel like he's the savior.''

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said he wasn't certain whether Holiday, who has been working out on his own in North Carolina the past couple months, would start or how much he'd play.

''I just know we won't play him 35 minutes the first game back,'' Gentry said. ''We're not going to do anything like that. I think we've got to be smart about it. He's been working out twice a day. He's in great shape. There's a big difference in being in great shape and being in basketball shape.''

New Orleans has won just two of its first 11 games, but also two of its last three after and 0-8 start.

''It's good for us - a big, key component to our team that we're able to get back,'' said forward Anthony Davis, who has been averaging 30.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks, but has lacked the help he need to produce more victories. ''It's good for everybody and we'll try to get this thing going.

Holiday is expected to return as healthy as he has been in several seasons.

He began last season on minute restrictions following his rehabilitation from a nagging lower leg injury that had sidelined him for much of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns.

A former Eastern Conference All-Star with Philadelphia before his trade to New Orleans in 2013, Holiday wound up playing in 65 games with 23 starts during the 2015-16 season, averaging 16.8 points, 6.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 28.2 minutes per game. He scored 20 or more points 25 times and recorded six double-doubles.

''Jrue's very good offensively and very good defensively,'' Davis added. ''He's going to bring that passion, that energy, that fight. So it's going to be good to have him back on the floor for us and have Jrue being Jrue.''

Tim Frazier has been starting in Holiday's place this season, averaging 11.4 points and 7.9 assists. He said he's been in constant contact with Holiday, particularly after games to ask for his evaluation.

''Coming from the point guard spot, I know what you see outside is different from what I see on the court,'' Frazier said. ''He just told me what he's seeing and he's been positive, telling me to keep my head up and continue to fight and that he was on his way back soon.''

As for Evans, the Pelicans will gradually ramp him up to contact practices within the next couple weeks, Demps said, raising the prospects that the versatile 6-foot-6 guard and wing player could be playing in early December.

''It'll all be based on how his rehab goes in the next days, weeks,'' Demps said, peering through a conference room window with a view of Evans running through basketball drills on the practice court. ''If you just look at him right now, it's pretty close.''

Demps said the Pelicans also hope by the end of next week to receive a medical update on small forward Quincy Pondexter's recovery from multiple knee surgeries, which might provide a clearer timetable on his return.

    • Chalmers hopeful of comeback chance
      November 14, 2016

MIAMI (AP) Mario Chalmers' phone has been ringing for the last few weeks, the calls coming from teams curious about how his recovery is progressing.

He's about to have a concrete answer.

Chalmers is on target to be cleared for full basketball activity this week, eight months after rupturing his right Achilles tendon. He thinks he could be on an NBA floor again by early December.

''Right now, I can pretty much do everything,'' Chalmers said. ''I've been on the court the last two, three months just working on getting back. I'm back to sprinting, running and jumping.''

He's always been supremely confident in his game. That hasn't changed.

      ''Never will, either,'' Chalmers said.

The 30-year-old was a starter on Miami's title teams in 2012 and 2013 - among active players, only Tony Parker has also been a starting point guard on multiple championship squads. Miami went to the NBA Finals in four straight seasons when Chalmers was with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, but the 2014 title series still causes Chalmers some angst.

''My last performance in the Finals, that's the one thing I do want to change if I ever get the opportunity again,'' Chalmers said. ''That's the one thing that really sticks out in my mind.''

So he'll look to sign with a title contender.

Chalmers knows it'll be a prove-yourself deal for the rest of this season, and that he'll almost certainly be asked to serve in a backup role. He's fine with that, saying a chance is all he needs right now.

''I've been to four Finals,'' Chalmers said. ''There's a lot I can share. And whatever nervousness I have coming back, it's all going to be gone as soon as that first shot goes in.''

      HARDEN'S STREAK

James Harden is having a November to remember.

In six games so far this month, the Houston guard is averaging 30.3 points, 14.2 assists and 8.5 rebounds. He's got triple-doubles in his last two games, something only Elvin Hayes has done in Rockets history. And according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Harden is the first NBA player with at least 24 points and 12 assists in six straight games.

Houston plays Philadelphia on Monday. Last season in two games against the 76ers, Harden averaged 39.5 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

      VIDEO OFF

NBA teams have the option this season of reviewing video in real-time on their benches during games.

It doesn't seem to be widely utilized yet.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich says he has no interest, and Sacramento coach Dave Joerger is among the many still wondering what the best way is to add real-time access to their in-game routines. Teams have been able to use video on the bench for the past few seasons, provided it was uploaded first. This real-time option, the NBA said, was in the interest of streamlining.

''I haven't wanted to do it just to do it,'' Utah coach Quin Snyder said. ''I want it to be productive.''

The Jazz load their players up with tons of film around games. If a player wants more, Snyder will accommodate.

''If one guy wants to do it, I'd be ready to do it tomorrow,'' Snyder said.

      THE WEEK AHEAD

Some games to note this week:

Orlando at Indiana, Monday: Magic coach Frank Vogel gets to reunite with his former club, one that has sputtered early.

Toronto at Cleveland, Tuesday: The Cavs ''held'' DeMar DeRozan to 32 points on Oct. 28, his second-lowest output this season.

Houston at Oklahoma City, Wednesday: James Harden vs. Russell Westbrook. You don't need any more reason to watch.

San Antonio at L.A. Lakers, Friday: The Lakers have wins over the Hawks, Warriors and Rockets. Here's another proving ground.

Golden State at Milwaukee, Saturday: The Warriors went to Milwaukee 24-0 last season, and left 24-1. Guessing they remember.

      ---

      STAT OF THE WEEK

Stephen Curry, Golden State: During his NBA-record spree of 3-pointers last Monday, he missed as many shots from inside the paint (four) as he did from beyond the arc. Curry finished with 46 points, shooting 13 of 17 from beyond the arc.

              • Wednesday's Tip Sheet

Underdogs fared well on Tuesday by covering in four of five games. The only two underdogs to win outright were the Hornets at Minnesota and the Bulls at Portland. The Hawks and Cavaliers failed to cash in the favorite role, while the Lakers pushed as seven-point favorites in a home win over the Nets.

The OVER finished 3-2, including on the highest total of the night in Los Angeles as the Nets and Lakers eclipsed the OVER on 219 total.

Game of the Night – Warriors at Raptors (8:05 PM EST – ESPN)

Golden State embarks on a four-game road swing within the Eastern Conference that starts in Toronto. The Warriors began the season with a 29-point home loss to the Spurs, but have ripped off eight wins in their last nine games to own the second-best record in the Western Conference behind the Clippers (10-1). Golden State hasn’t been great against the number by posting a 4-6 ATS mark, including a non-cover in its last game against Phoenix as 16 ½-point home favorites in a 133-120 win.

The Raptors return home following a 121-117 setback at Cleveland last night in an Eastern Conference Finals rematch. Toronto managed a cover as 5 ½-point underdogs, but dropped to 7-3 on the season. The Raptors have yet to lose consecutive games this season with two of those defeats coming to the Cavaliers, while putting together a 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS record at Air Canada Center.

Golden State captured both matchups with Toronto last season, but the Raptors picked up covers as an underdog each time. In Golden State’s 112-109 triumph at Air Canada Center last December, Stephen Curry burned the Raptors for 44 points, while Kyle Lowry countered with 41 points for Toronto. The Warriors are currently listed as 5 ½-point favorites at most spots with the total sitting at 220.

                Hot Streaks

The Hawks (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) continue to sit atop the Southeast division after last night’s 93-90 victory at Miami. Atlanta failed to cash as 6 ½-point road favorites for only its third non-cover of the season, while finishing UNDER the total for the third time in four road games. The Hawks return home tonight looking for their sixth straight win as the Bucks invade Philips Arena as Atlanta owns a 5-1 home mark. The Bucks moved above the .500 mark with Saturday’s win over the Grizzlies as Milwaukee has split its last four meetings with Atlanta at Philips Arena.

The Clippers (10-1 SU, 9-2 ATS) have busted out of the gate with the best record in basketball through 11 games. Los Angeles routed Brooklyn on Monday, 127-95, the third straight home win by the Clippers by at least 30 points. The Clippers host the Grizzlies tonight at Staples Center as Los Angeles knocked off Memphis at FedEx Forum on November 4 as 5 ½-point favorites, 99-88. The last three matchups between these teams at Staples Center have finished UNDER the total. Tonight’s total is listed at 201 ½.

                Fearsome Foursome

The Thunder and Nuggets have each lost four consecutive games as the two teams each look to end their cold streaks at home.

Oklahoma City (6-5 SU, 5-6 ATS) has allowed at least 104 points in each of its past four defeats, including in a 16-point loss at Detroit on Monday. The Thunder tries to win its first home game since November 7 against Miami as OKC has dropped three in a row at Chesapeake Energy Arena. James Harden and the Rockets travel to Oklahoma City tonight as Houston has won three of its past four games. Houston owns a 4-1 ATS record as a road underdog as the Rockets are listed as 1 ½-point ‘dogs. The Rockets have covered six straight meetings with the Thunder, but the home team has won the last four matchups.

The Nuggets (3-7 SU, 6-4 ATS) begin a four-game homestand at Pepsi Center as Denver is the only team in the league without a home victory. Denver has allowed at least 100 points in nine of 10 games this season, while eclipsing the OVER seven times. The Nuggets host the Suns tonight, as Phoenix has dropped four of its past five games. This is the highest total on the board in the league this evening (221 ½), but three of the four matchups between these squads finished UNDER the total.

                Head-to-head notes

-- The Wizards swept the 76ers last season in the four-game season series, but Philadelphia cashed in the final two meetings as a heavy underdog. The last time the 76ers beat the Wizards came on February 27, 2015, as Washington has won nine of the past 10 matchups.

-- Orlando captured both matchups from New Orleans last season, including a 104-89 blowout as four-point home favorites. The Magic has won each of the past four home meetings with the Pelicans since 2013, while each of the past five contests between these teams have finished UNDER the total.

-- Cleveland won three of four games against Indiana last season, as the three victories came by five points or less. In the final matchup in Indianapolis, LeBron James sat out as the Pacers avoided the sweep with a 123-109 win as 3 ½-point favorites.

-- In spite of a 2-7 record, Dallas has owned Boston over the years by winning seven consecutive matchups. In the two victories last season, the Mavericks beat the Celtics by four and five points, while each of the past four matchups have eclipsed the OVER.

-- The Knicks grabbed two of three meetings from the Pistons last season, but Detroit won the opening matchup of this season between the teams. Detroit took care of New York at the Palace of Auburn Hills, 102-89 as four-point home favorites, but have lost each of the last two visits to New York by double-digits.

-- The Spurs bring their 5-0 road record to Sacramento for the second time this season. San Antonio has won seven straight meetings with Sacramento, including a 102-94 triumph at Golden 1 Center in late October. Each of the previous five matchups have finished UNDER the total, while the Kings have scored less than 100 points in each of the last six meetings.

                    • Thursday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 11 on the way…….

                      — Saints are 10-4 vs spread in their last 14 games.

                      — Chicago is 3-11 vs spread in its last 14 games.

                      — Browns are 6-16-1 in their last 23 games as an underdog.

                      — Cowboys won/covered their last eight games.

                      — New England is 32-11 coming off a loss.

                      — Colts are 9-2 coming off a bye.

                      Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 9, bottom 4 teams……

                      32) Browns— Hurting Steelers come to Lake Erie this week needing a win. Chances are they will get it. Cleveland was outscored 60-8 in second half of its last three games.

                      31) 49ers— They’ve lost eight games in a row (1-7 vs spread); now Tom Brady is coming back near his hometown this week, so very little shot that New England will let down. Not good.

                      30) Jaguars— Offensive coordinator they fired few weeks ago is rumored to be candidate to be the new coach at Purdue. Jacksonville is -12 in turnovers the last five games.

                      29) Bears— Read few different national writers Monday speculating that Jay Cutler’s days in the Windy City may be numbered. Usually when there is speculation, someone has tipped off the person doing the speculating.

                      9) Dolphins— Won/covered last four games, picked Rivers off four times, just in 4th quarter last Sunday. Interesting game in the Coliseum this week, against the Rams in Jared Goff’s NFL debut.

                      8) Giants— Six wins by total of 21 points; they’re finding ways to win close games, just like they found ways to lose close games the last three years.

                      7) Chiefs— They’re 18-3 in their last 21 games, but they’ve also scored only one offensive TD in their last two games.

                      6) Broncos— 3-3 in last six games after a 4-0 start; if the defense doesn’t force turnovers, they are going to struggle.

                      5) Falcons— Bye week comes after their worst offensive game of the year. At 6-3, Atlanta is in good shape to return to the playoffs for first time in four years.

                      4) Seahawks— Wilson looked more nimble in Foxboro last week; if he is mobile, then Seahawks are very good.

                      3) Raiders— Haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, when they lost the Super Bowl to the Bucs, but right now, they’re as good as anyone.

                      2) Patriots— Still think they’re the best team, but if Gronkowski is out for any length of time, then no.

                      1) Cowboys— Not often an NFL QB holds a news conference to say his former backup deserves to be the starter. Thats how well Dak Prescott is playing this season- he might be the MVP if the season ended today.
