  • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    — Cubs 9, Indians 3– Game 7 is tonight in Cleveland.

    — November 21 Texans-Raiders Monday night game is being played in Mexico City.

    — Raiders don’t play another true road game until December 8 in KC; they finish with three road games in last four weeks, all division games.

    — Patriots got a 3rd-round draft pick from Cleveland for LB Jaime Collins.

    — Chicago Bulls are 3-0 for the first time in 20 years.

    — Oklahoma City Thunder gave Victor Oladipo $84M for four years.

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Steelers-Ravens play in Baltimore Sunday, with both teams off a bye week; wouldn’t it have made sense for this to be the Thursday night game this week? Football wasn’t meant to be played on three days’ rest.

    12) Chicago Bears are the only NFL team that does not have a defensive player who has ever played in a Pro Bowl.

    11) Bears’ offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains went to college at Arkansas, where he held for kicks for four years and learned football from coach Houston Nutt.

Loggains could’ve gone to a smaller school and played QB, but he thought he wanted to be a coach and chose to learn from Nutt, who was a very good coach before going on TV.

    10) ESPN fantasy sports guru Matthew Berry was once a writer for the TV show Married with Children.

    9) Dolphins are favored over the Jets this week; this is only 2nd time in last 12 years that Miami is favored in its post-bye game. Overall, Dolphins are 6-12 in their last 18 post-bye games.

    8) There is a TV show on the History Channel called American Pickers, where two guys drive around in a van and try to buy collectible stuff from older people who live in mostly rural areas.

Why older people? Because they want to find people who are just looking to get rid of stuff, preferably for less money. Sometimes you get mad at the two guys, especially Frank, who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, but that is part of the business of making money, I guess.

The guys own two shops where they re-sell the stuff for a profit. It is oddly entertaining and worth watching.

    7) In three of last five seasons, Dwight Howard has made less than half his foul shots; he is off to an 11-24 start this year, after his 8-20 game against the Kings Monday.

Howard makes $23M a year, has already banked $167M in salary in his career. How can I be a better free throw shooter than he is?

    6) Clippers TV announcer Ralph Lawler is joy to listen to; always watch as many Clipper games as I can. Clippers were so bad for so long and now they’re good, so you’re happy for him. Lawler is enthusiastic and you can tell he is a real basketball fan.

    5) Oklahoma City traded Ersan Ilyasova to Philly Tuesday, after he played only 62 minutes in three games for the Thunder- they acquired him as part of the Serge Ibaka deal.

This means when he plays for the Sixers, it’ll be the 5th team Ilyasova has played for in his last 79 games, going from the Bucks to Detroit to Orlando to the Thunder to Philadelphia.

On one hand, teams want you enough to trade for you; on the other hand, once they have you, then don’t mind getting rid of you.

    4) Good news for NC State’s basketball team; freshman 7-footer Omer Yurtseven will be able to play for the Wolfpack this year— he becomes eligible December 15, enough time to get in a few games before ACC play starts.

Yurtseven is a 5-star level recruit, a huge get for Mark Gottfried.

    3) There is a story going around that Nick Saban was interested in the Giants’ coaching job last January, and that the team almost hired him. Somehow, comedian Tom Arnold is involved with spreading this story, which makes it a little weirder.

You get the feeling Saban has one more coaching stop in him and it will be an NFL job— he has nothing left to prove in college.

    2) Mets closer Jeurys Familia got arrested in New Jersey on domestic violence charges, which is bad news for Mets, seeing as Jose Reyes got suspended 52 games LY for a similar offense.

Aroldis Chapman got a 30-game suspension this year and he was never arrested for his offense.

1— Obscure Fact of the Day: Eddie Johnson played 17 years in the NBA, scored 19,202 points; he holds the record for most points scored in the NBA, without ever making an All-Star team.

Jamal Crawford has a good chance to break that record; he has scored 17,117 points; he is 36, looks like he would have to play two more years at his current pace to set the new record.

              • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                November 2, 2016

Underdogs cashed in five of nine games in Tuesday’s action, but the Jazz and Bucks were the only two ‘dogs to win outright. The Warriors finally picked up a cover in their fourth opportunity, blasting the Blazers in a playoff rematch. The OVER hit in seven of nine contests on Tuesday after a 7-4 run to the UNDER on Sunday and Monday.

Game of the Night – Thunder at Clippers (10:30 PM EST – ESPN)

Both Oklahoma City and Los Angeles have jumped out to impressive 3-0 starts, as the Thunder will visit old friend Kevin Durant at Golden State on Thursday night. First, OKC will look to knock off a Clippers’ squad that has covered in all three victories. Los Angeles has cruised past Utah and Phoenix on its three-game homestand, as Chris Paul paced the Clippers with 24 points and eight assists in Monday’s 116-98 rout of the Suns.

The glaring headline to come out from opening week is the massive numbers Russell Westbrook is posting for the Thunder. The star point guard is taking over in OKC since Durant bolted for the Warriors in the offseason as Westbrook has posted two triple-doubles already, including a 51-point effort in an overtime victory over Phoenix last Friday. The Thunder didn’t cover in its first two games as a heavy favorite over the 76ers and Suns, but cashed as 8 ½-point favorites against the Lakers in Sunday’s 113-96 home triumph.

The Thunder captured three of four matchups from the Clippers last season, but have lost two of the last three visits to Staples Center. Los Angeles is listed as a seven-point favorite with a total of 206 ½.

                Strong Starts

                Bulls (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

Apparently, all the moves Chicago made in the offseason have worked, at least for the time being. Chicago goes for its fourth win in four tries tonight in Boston, as the Bulls are fresh off consecutive blowouts over the Pacers and Nets. The offense has topped the 105-point mark in all three wins, while Chicago ran out to an 18-point advantage in Monday’s 118-88 rout of Brooklyn as 6 ½-point favorites. In their opening night victory over the Celtics, Chicago won in spite of shooting 39% from the floor, but Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler each went 4-of-6 from three-point range.

                Hawks (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

Another re-tooled club has leapt out to a strong 3-0 start following the departures of Jeff Teague and Al Horford in the offseason. Atlanta has won all three games by double-digits, including Monday’s 106-95 triumph over Sacramento to cash as seven-point home favorites. Dwight Howard has put up a pair of double-doubles for the Hawks, including 18 points and 11 rebounds in Monday’s win over the Kings. The Hawks have yet to allow at least 100 points in three victories, as the Lakers invade Philips Arena tonight. Los Angeles fell apart late in a 115-108 loss at Indiana on Tuesday, but the Lakers managed a cover as nine-point underdogs to improve to 3-1 ATS on the season in spite of losing three straight.

                Quick Turnaround

                Rockets at Knicks (-1, 216)

Houston and Cleveland decided defense was optional in the fourth quarter of last night’s 128-120 loss at Quicken Loans Arena as the Cavs outscored the Rockets, 43-36. The Rockets picked up a cover as 9 ½-point underdogs thanks to James Harden’s 41-point effort, but Houston dropped to 2-2 on the season. Houston travels to New York tonight to face another unrested squad as the Knicks’ offense dried up in the fourth quarter in a 102-89 loss at Detroit. Last season, the Knicks compiled an 8-9 SU and 10-7 ATS record with no rest, while Houston went 8-12 SU and 7-13 ATS on the second of a back-to-back.

                Pelicans at Grizzlies (-5 ½, 206)

Five teams have yet to win a game, including New Orleans, who dropped to 0-4 following Tuesday’s 117-113 setback to Milwaukee as 3 ½-point favorites. The Pelicans have lost to the Warriors and Spurs, but have also given up 107 points or more in home defeats to the Nuggets and Bucks. New Orleans heads to Memphis, as the Grizzlies were blasted by the Timberwolves last night, 116-80, but starters Mike Conley and Marc Gasol sat out, while Zach Randolph only played 10 minutes off the bench. Memphis swept the four-game series from New Orleans last season, as three of the victories came in the underdog role.

                Notable head-to-head trends

-- The Raptors won all four matchups with the Wizards last season, while all four meetings finished UNDER the total. Toronto is listed as a one-point road favorite at most spots tonight.

-- The Hornets cruised to a four-game sweep of the 76ers last season with Charlotte covering three times as a double-digit favorite. Charlotte is listed as a 12 ½-point home favorite this evening.

-- Detroit captured three of four matchups with Brooklyn last season, but the Nets covered both meetings as a home underdog. Tonight, Brooklyn is a 4 ½-point home ‘dog to Detroit.

-- The Mavericks have won four of the last five visits to Salt Lake City as Dallas catches Utah off a huge underdog victory at San Antonio last night. Dallas is listed as a five-point underdog at Utah.

-- Six consecutive meetings between the Blazers and Suns have finished UNDER the total, including all three matchups last season. Phoenix and Portland played twice in the opening week of the season with their only other meeting coming in December as the Suns took two of three. Tonight’s total is 215 ½.

The NBA's leader coming into the day with 11.8 assists per game toyed with the Knicks defense, setting up teammates for lobs or open 3-pointers as the Rockets easily bounced back from a loss in Cleveland a night earlier.

Eric Gordon added 21 points for Houston, which has won seven straight at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks haven't defeated the Rockets at home since Jan. 26, 2009, so long ago that their coach was current Houston coach Mike D'Antoni.

Harden also grabbed six rebounds, a night after he had 41 points and 15 assists in the Rockets' 128-120 loss in Cleveland.

Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points for the Knicks, who besides their poor defense also heard loud boos for their rebounding and turnovers in a dismal performance.

                      RAPTORS 113, WIZARDS 103

WASHINGTON (AP) - DeMar DeRozan continued his hot start by scoring 40 points and outdueling John Wall in a showcase of All-Star guards as the Raptors beat the winless Wizards.

DeRozan was 14 of 23 from the floor despite leaving the game briefly to get his ankles taped. Raptors backcourt made Kyle Lowry needed three stitches to close a cut below his right eye but still scored 18 points.

Those problems didn't slow down the Raptors (3-1) as they spoiled the home opener for the Wizards (0-3). Terrence Ross added 15 points for Toronto.

Wall was dominant in leading Washington with 33 points on 13 of 19 shooting and 11 assists. Otto Porter was 11 of 13 from the field for 23 points and Bradley Beal scored 15, but the Wizards did themselves in with 21 turnovers that Toronto turned into 30 points.

                      GRIZZLIES 89, PELICANS 83, OT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - JaMychal Green scored 21 points, Mike Conley added 20 and the Grizzlies beat the still-winless Pelicans.

James Ennis had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, while Zach Randolph finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, part of the Grizzlies outrebounding the Pelicans 52-43.

Lance Stephenson led New Orleans with 21 points and six assists, while Langston Galloway and rookie Buddy Hield had 18 points each. Anthony Davis, the league's second-leading scorer, was limited to 10 points, connecting on only 3 of 13 shots as New Orleans lost its fifth straight.

                      JAZZ 97, MAVERICKS 81

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - George Hill scored 25 points and the Jazz defeated the Mavericks.

Hill continued to power the Jazz offensively after coming to the team in a three-way trade with the Pacers and Hawks last summer. He has scored 18-plus points in all five games, the only Jazz player to do so.

The Mavericks trailed the entire game except for a 16-15 lead at the beginning of the second quarter. After shooting just 37.0 percent in the first quarter, the Jazz hit 49.2 percent the rest of the way. They were 12 for 25 from 3-point range.

Rodney Hood scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Jazz as teammate Rudy Gobert had 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Harrison Barnes led the Mavericks with 14 points, but they shot just 26.9 percent behind the arc.

                      • Thursday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 9 right around the corner:

                        — Falcons are 2-14 vs spread in their last 16 games as a favorite.

                        — Dallas won/covered its last six games.

                        — Tennessee is 4-12 vs spread in its last 16 games.

                        — San Francisco is 10-5-1 in last 16 games as a home dog.

                        — Denver is 21-9 vs spread in its last 30 divisional games.

                        — Carolina is 3-7 vs spread in its last ten games.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

                        13) Cubs 8, Indians 7 (10)– Baseball needed this; high drama, a rain delay in extra innings and a big market team (#6 payroll) ending a 108-year title drought. Hopefully they got great TV ratings.

As for Cleveland, well, the Cavaliers won the NBA title in June.

Think about the Miami Marlins, who won the World Series in their 5th year of existence (1997, against the Indians), then a second one six years later, the only two times they’ve made the playoffs.

Indians haven’t won a World Series since 1948; life can be weird.

                        12) Minnesota Vikings are 5-2, having a good year in the first year in their new domed stadium, but OC Norv Turner suddenly quit on Wednesday, apparently shocking everyone in the organization.

Vikings lost their QB for the season with a knee injury in training camp; they traded a 1st-round pick for Sam Bradford, but scored only 11 offensive TD’s in their first seven games- it is hard to break in a new QB when he arrives after training camp.

New OC Pat Shurmur worked with Bradford in St Louis/Philly; until someone fixes Minnesota’s offensive line, it might not help.

                        11) Late Tuesday night (very late), I stumbled upon the live broadcast of the final table at the World Series of Poker from Las Vegas, with heads-up play going on for the $8M first prize.

Poker is good TV, in an odd way; I got a research project done in the four hours I had it on. Finally went to bed at 5:20am, as one of the analysts, pro poker player Antonio Esfandiari, was bemoaning how passive the player who was behind was playing.

                        10) First prize was $8,005,310; second place was $4,661,228, so they were playing heads-up for $3,344,082. Over 6,000 people started in the Main Event back in July. Quite an accomplishment to win it. Or finish 2nd.

                        9) Big 14 is going to televise six Friday night games next season, which is going to be controversial because major colleges have traditionally left Friday nights to high school games.

                        8) Was sitting in a bar having lunch the other day and a college golf tournament was on TV; college golfers carry their own golf bags and those bags are a lot smaller than ones PGA golfers use.

                        7) Redskins’ OT Trent Williams is suspended for four games; those games are against: Vikings-Packers-Cowboys-Cardinals.

Williams is Washington’s best lineman- this isn’t good for them.

                        6) There are “Make America Great Again” hats on EBay, signed by Donald Trump that are selling for anywhere from $500-800. What a country.

                        5) Sacramento Kings lost in OT at Miami Tuesday, their 15th loss in a row in south Florida. Sacramento is better this year but DeMarcus Cousins has trouble controlling his emotions, and as a result, he gets hosed on key calls. His sixth foul in this game was an offensive foul call that was just terrible.

                        4) CFL schedule gets weird sometimes; it is 20 weeks long, with each team getting two byes. Ottawa-Winnipeg play twice a year; this year’s meetings are in Weeks 19-20; who thought that was a good idea?

                        3) I’ll sound old saying this, but it is true; our society has gotten ridiculously soft. NBA teams now routinely rest players if team has games on consecutive nights.

Why? AAU teams play as many as three teams in a day; I don’t see any kids collapsing from exhaustion. But pros don’t want to play some guys two nights in a row. Oy.

Ron Boone is a broadcaster for the Utah Jazz; when he played, and he played damn well (16 pts/game in his career) he played in every one of his team’s 1,041 games and schedules in the 70’s were lot different than now; no charters, some 3 games/3 nights stretches.

People nowadays pay serious money to watch these guys play; they deserve a good show.

                        2) Quote of the Day #2:
“I’m a professional athlete. What professional athlete don’t have a gun? I have a wife and I have a son at home. My job is to protect them at all costs, and my job is to protect myself as well even though I know I have security here, but I have to protect myself as well.”
Eagles WR Josh Huff, with an ominous quote

                        1— More from Mr Huff:
“I’m from Houston. You can’t trust a lot of people in Houston. There’s always somebody out to get you. You’ve got to protect yourself. Even when I’m back in Houston, I always have a gun on me, because there’s been several instances in Houston where I’ve lost a friend to gun violence, and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, so why would I let that happen to me?”

                              • Inside the Paint - Thursday
                                November 3, 2016

Even though football is still dominating Thursday’s betting landscape with both pro and college action, the NBA has five games on tap tonight which includes a quality double-header on TNT.

Favorites started off this week strong, going 17-3 straight up from Sunday to Tuesday but the underdogs bounced back on Wednesday with a 6-4 mark. Through four days, favorites and ‘dogs have gone 23-7 SU and 15-15 against the spread while the ‘over’ has produced a 19-11 mark.

The marquee matchup for Thursday takes place in the Bay Area as Oklahoma City (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) and Golden State (3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) renew their rivalry from Oracle Arena. The Warriors rallied from a 3-1 deficit to the Thunder in last year’s Western Conference Finals and captured the series in seven games.

While the rematch has some importance, the bigger headline for this game will be the first head-to-head showdown between former Oklahoma City teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant.

Since KD left, Westbrook has blown up for the Thunder by averaging a triple-double (37.8 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 10 APG) and even more impressive, the team has opened with a 4-0 start. Oklahoma City’s most impressive of the young season win came last night when it beat the L.A. Clippers 85-82 as a 7 ½-point road underdog. This will be the first back-to-back spot for OKC this season and last year they struggled to a 6-10 mark with no rest.

Durant and the Warriors have been installed as 11-point home favorites over OKC and they’ll be looking to win their first home game of the season after getting blasted 129-100 by San Antonio on Oct. 25.

Since that embarrassing setback, Golden State has won three straight and the offense is averaging 118.3 points per game over this stretch. Offensively, Golden State has a big advantage in this matchup but Oklahoma City has been sharper on the defensive side (96.5 PPG) of the ball so far. They’ve held three teams under 100 points and they’re ranked third in defensive field goal percentage (41.8%).

Tonight’s total is listed as high as 226 as of Thursday morning and the number seems a tad inflated based on OKC’s defensive form and the recent meetings between the pair at Oracle Arena. In the last seven games played at this venue, the ‘under’ has produced a 6-1 mark and the highest combined points was 231 during this span.

Tip-off for this game is set at 10:35 p.m. ET with TNT providing national coverage.

                                The Rest…

                                Sacramento at Orlando:
If you want to “pass” on a game tonight, I believe this is the matchup for you. Both clubs are still getting used to their new coaches (Dave Joerger, Frank Vogel) and the new faces on the roster. The Kings have started their East Coast trip with losses to the Hawks and Heat so the sense of urgency should be high on Thursday. Meanwhile, Orlando earned its first win (103-101) of the season on Tuesday and that came against the winless 76ers, luckily too. It’s been hard to watch the Magic, who are ranked 29th in scoring offense (95 PPG) and field goal percentage (40.8%). For what it’s worth, Orlando has won three of the last four meetings between the pair but Sacramento’s lone win came last November in Florida.

Boston at Cleveland (TNT, 8:05 p.m.): According to the futures market, these are the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. At the same time, the oddsmakers believe Cleveland is further ahead than Boston at this point, listing them as a 9 ½-point home favorite over Boston in this matchup. The Celtics beat the Bulls 107-100 last night and that was their largest margin of victory this season. Boston didn’t have center Al Horford (concussion) last night and he’s expected to miss tonight’s game as well. The C’s are 0-1 both SU and ATS this season when playing on no rest.

The Cavs remain unbeaten at 4-0 (2-2 ATS) and that includes a 3-0 mark at home where they’re averaging 116.7 PPG in their three wins. Boston captured a 104-103 win at Cleveland last February as a 6 ½-point underdog but the Cavs captured the other two regular season encounters by double digits.

Denver at Minnesota: If you appreciate young talent and great coaching, then this is the matchup for you. The Timeberwolves are listed as 3 ½-point home favorites over the Nuggets while the total is hovering between 208 and 209. Minnesota earned its first win of the season on Tuesday as Memphis gifted them a win by sitting Michael Conley and Marc Gasol. Denver hasn’t played since Monday when it lost 105-102 at Toronto, its second loss by three or less points this season. The Nuggets have eclipsed the century mark in every game this season and also allowed 100-plus as well, which has helped the ‘over’ go 3-1. Last season, Denver went 3-1 both SU and ATS versus Minnesota which included a pair of road wins from the Target Center.

Indiana at Milwaukee: The Pacers opened as two-point favorites over the Bucks and the number looks a little short considering Indiana is more talented squad. However, the Pacers haven’t looked great defensively (112.5 PPG) in any of their first four games and that’s resulted in a 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS record. Coincidentally, Milwaukee has the same exact record as the Bucks (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) and the two victories came when it scored 110 and 117 points. The total for this contest is 212 and that’s seven points higher than any of their four matchups last season. Indiana went 3-1 both SU and ATS in last year’s four meetings while the total split at 2-2.
