        November 13, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:31 left and another with 3:13 remaining to score a season-high 30 points, Stephen Curry also had 30 points with five 3s, and the balanced Golden State Warriors held off the Phoenix Suns 133-120 on Sunday night.

Kevin Durant added 29 points, nine rebounds and five assists as Golden State just missed a third 30-point performance by its star three. The Warriors avoided a second home loss at this early stage that would have matched their total of two defeats at Oracle Arena in each of the past two regular seasons.

Thompson shot 11 for 18 also with five 3s and scored 14 of his points in the fourth, while Draymond Green finished with 14 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for Golden State.

Eric Bledsoe and T.J. Warren scored 20 points apiece to lead six players in double figures for the Suns.

        MAGIC 119, THUNDER 117

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Serge Ibaka's baseline jumper with less than a second remaining lifted Orlandao past Oklahoma City.

Ibaka, who was traded from the Thunder to the Magic in the offseason, scored a career-high 31 points and added nine rebounds and four blocks.

With the score tied in the final minute, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook missed a pull-up jumper, and Orlando rebounded and called timeout with 11 seconds remaining to set up Ibaka's winner with 0.4 seconds left.

Westbrook finished with 41 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds for his third triple-double of the season and 40th of his career. The Thunder had won 20 straight when Westbrook tallied a triple-double.

Elfrid Payton scored 23 points and Evan Fournier added 21 for the Magic, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

        CAVALIERS 100, HORNETS 93

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James sparked a fourth-quarter comeback with 11 points, Channing Frye scored a season-high 20 and Cleveland beat Charlotte.

James, who finished with 19 points, also had five assists in the final period. He had eight points on 4-of-15 shooting through three quarters.

Kyrie Irving scored 19 points and Kevin Love added 17, but neither played in the fourth quarter as Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue stuck with the group that helped Cleveland take control of the game.

Kemba Walker scored 21 points for the Hornets, who have lost two straight after starting the season 6-1.

        TIMBERWOLVES 125, LAKERS 99

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Andrew Wiggins had a career-high 47 points, equaling the entire Lakers starting lineup to lead Minnesota.

Wiggins made 14 of 21 shots and Nemanja Bjelica added a career-high 24 points and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who played without starting guard Zach LaVine and reserve forward Shabazz Muhammad. Both missed the game with sore right knees.

Lou Williams scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Lakers, who got 47 points from their starters and 52 from their bench. Julius Randle had 14 points and six rebounds and Jordan Clarkson scored 14.

        TRAIL BLAZERS 112, NUGGETS 105

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 32 points and the Trail Blazers handed the struggling Nuggets their fourth straight loss.

CJ McCollum added 21 points for the Blazers, who have won five of their last six games. Portland trailed 57-50 at the break, but came alive in the second half and outscored Denver 36-15 in the third quarter.

Jamal Murray hit a 3-pointer to pull Denver within 110-105 in the final seconds, but the rally came up short. It was the Blazers' seventh straight victory over the Nuggets at the Moda Center.

Murray and Danilo Gallinari led the Nuggets with 19 points apiece and Kenneth Faried added 18. The Nuggets have struggled with injuries this season and have just three wins.

              • Texans 24, Jaguars 21— Jax is one of three teams (Cards, Giants) not to score on their first drive of a game: their offense has been outscored 7-0 by opponents’ defense on first drive of their nine games. Texans are now 1-3 on road, after losing first three road games by combined score of 84-22. Jaguars have zero takeaways in their last five games (-12).

Chiefs 20, Panthers 17— In their last two games, both wins, KC has one offensive TD, eight FGs, six 3/outs. Carolina led this game 17-6 in 4th quarter, but Newton threw a pick-6, then Panthers fumbled it away again in last minute when game was tied.

Carolina started second half with a 20-play drive that took 10:08 off the clock, but they wound up punting on the drive- they didn’t score in the second half.

Denver 25, Saints 23— One of weirdest endings in NFL history; Saints tied game on a 32-yard TD with 1:22 left, but Broncos blocked PAT, ran it back for the game-winning two points. New Orleans averaged 9.8 yds/pass attempt but turned ball over 4 times (-2) which is most always fatal. Broncos converted 11 of 19 third down plays, had 9-yard edge in field position.

Rams 9, Jets 6— On Hard Knocks this summer, rookie WR Cooper was having issues catching punts, so coach Jeff Fisher stepped in and gave him some tips— Fisher ran punts back when he played. With this game tied 6-6 in 4th and Cooper returning punts for banged-up Austin (leg), Cooper made an excellent catch on a short punt that gave Rams good field position on their own 48. If he lets it bounce, Rams could’ve lost 15-20 yards of field position. From there, LA drove for the game-winning FG. Good coaching helps.

That said, on their last 32 drives, Rams have scored one touchdown, tried six FGs; how much worse could rookie QB Goff really be? LA has four wins; they didn’t score a TD in two of them. The defense could use some help.

Eagles 24, Falcons 15— Philly is 4-0 at home, allowing 38 points, giving up three offensive TDs on 42 drives. Atlanta had scored 106 points in its last three games; holding them to 15 is really impressive. Falcons were 2-11 on 3rd down in this game, ran ball only 13 times for 48 yards.

Redskins 26, Vikings 20— Atlanta started 5-0 last season and missed playoffs; is Minnesota headed in same direction? Vikings have lost four games in a row, their OC quit- they missed PAT after their third TD and then got shut out in second half. Vikings have only two takeaways in last three games. Over is 5-0 in Washington home games.

Titans 47, Packers 25— Tennessee tried onside kick to start game, which didn’t work; still, they are first team since 1986 (Giants) to lead Green Bay by 21 points in first quarter. On their first three drives, Tennessee’s offense ran 17 plays for 236 yards and three TDs- their TE’s ran amok, with over 100 receiving yards and two TDs in first half alone.

Bucs 36, Bears 10— This seems like a good time to point out that NFL’s TV ratings have gone down in every Presidential election year, not just this year, and by as much as 10% in 2000, so things should get back to normal from here on in, at least as far as TV ratings go.

This is an awful loss for the Bears, who didn’t get a first down in the second half- they ran 12 plays for -13 yards in the whole second half. No bueno.

CFL playoffs— Edmonton 24, Hamilton 21 and BC Lions 32, Winnipeg 31.

Dolphins 31, Chargers 24— On his last five drives, Philip Rivers threw four INTs and a TD pass; the 3rd INT was run back for the game-winning Miami TD by Kiko Alonso. San Diego held Ajayi to 79 rushing yards, Over is now 8-2 in Charger games this year; those of us who have NFL Sunday Ticket will miss them next week, their bye week. Miami has won four games in a row.

Cardinals 23, 49ers 20– Kaepernick played well in leading 49ers back to tie game with 1:55 left, but Palmer drove Arizona 69 yards for the winning FG at the gun. Penalty yardage in this game: SF 100, Arizona 10. Cardinals turned ball over four times (-3) but won, which rarely happens.

Cowboys 35, Steelers 30— Pittsburgh went for two points four times and went 0-4. What is the reason for doing it after your first two TDs of the game? Dallas has won eight in row for first time since 1977; there were seven lead changes in this game. Pittsburgh/Green Bay both have Hall of Fame QBs and are both 4-5; go figure.

                  • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six most popular picks in Week 10 of the Westgate Super Contest:

                    6) San Diego Chargers (412) -4- L

                    5) Carolina Panthers (417) -3- L

                    4) Green Bay Packers (521) -2.5- L

                    3) Atlanta Falcons (538) even- L

                    2) New Orleans Saints (550) -2.5- L

                    1) Pittsburgh Steelers (671) -2.5- L

Seahawks 31, Patriots 24– How sweet was this for Pete Carroll? Lost to New England in the Super Bowl couple years ago, fired by the Patriots so they could hire Belichick. Small consolation but also a great game. Wilson looked little more mobile, which generates their offense.

Rough day for the favorites: 3-9 against the spread.

Season record: 18-41-2…….popular opinion is taking a beating!!!!

                    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Texans 24, Jaguars 21— Jax is one of three teams (Cards, Giants) not to score on their first drive of a game: their offense has been outscored 7-0 by opponents’ defense on first drive of their nine games.

                            NBA Betting Preview

                            Philadelphia 76ers vs. Houston Rockets

Sportsbook.ag Odds: Houston (-11.5); Total set at 214.5

This is definitely not the most attractive NBA game on tonight's card from a pure fan perspective, but that doesn't mean you can't add a unit or two to your bankroll from it.

The 1-8 SU Philadelphia 76ers are in Houston to take on a Rockets team that just split a home-and-home with the title contending Spurs. The 106-100 home loss by Houston on Saturday night was the first game back after a five-game road trip that saw Houston go 3-2 SU, close it out with a road victory at San Antonio as 8.5-point underdogs, and play some quality teams like Atlanta and Cleveland along the way.

After all those tough games against elite competition, the Rockets get to welcome in the lowly 76ers tonight and we should see a high-tempo, up-and-down game.

Houston has had a tendency to play down to the level of their competition in year's past and that has to be a little concerning if you are considering laying the double digit points tonight.

However, it's not the point spread that I'm looking at as this total – as high as it is – still seems a bucket or two too low. Yes, the 214.5 number is in line with the season average of points allowed for both teams – Houston allows 106.7 and Philly gives up 108.2 – but the likely game script of this game suggests we won't see much defense.

Houston has had trouble keeping the opposition below the century mark this year, and only once have they held an opponent under 98 points. For all of Philadelphia's youth and inexperience, the 76ers have shown lately that their offense is starting to take shape with three of their last five games seeing 101 or more points scored.

Two of those three outings came in a home-and-home series with Indiana, but the 101 points they put up on Cleveland raised some eyebrows about the potential of the 76ers offense.

With the Rockets knack for playing down to their opponent, and in this case it will be Houston's defense that slacks, Philly's young scorers like Jahlil Okafor and Joel Embiid should have strong performances.

As a double-digit home favorite, Houston's got to be looking at this game as one they should easily take simply by relying on James Harden and the offense. Philly has not held an opponent to less than 102 points all year (ironically it was the defending champion Cavaliers) and Harden and company should take full advantage.

Houston has gone 'under' the total in four of their last five games overall, and are 0-2 O/U at home this year, but this is exactly the spot and opponent where the home fans should see one of those memorable offensive performances from this team.

With everyone basically shooting the lights out against the 76ers this year, one of the league's best scorers in Harden will reach 30+. Houston has to believe that they should have no problem winning this game easily by not worrying about defense too much and baiting the Sixers into a track meet.

The Rockets have more depth and better shooters all around and that's definitely the style of play we should see.

What puts this total play 'over' the top – pun intended – is the fact that current betting percentages on this total at Vegasinsider.com show it's about a 50/50 split. Yet, this number has actually already been bumped up a point from opening up at 213.5 and I've got to agree with this move.

Houston fans are used to seeing plenty of points from both teams in their building and this should be the first time this year that they'll get to see that.

Best Bet: Take Over 214.5 points.
