    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

    STREAKING

Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0, 2.25 ERA, $220):
Williams has picked up right where he left off last season. The right hander has a nice 0.92 WHIP to go along with his solid ERA and issued just one walk so far this season.

That said, he’s only faced the Reds this year, so we’ll have to see how he does when he steps up the level of competition as Williams and the Pirates visit the Nationals tonight. Pittsburgh is currently a +158 road dog with a total of 8.

    SLUMPING

Zack Wheeler, New York Mets (0-1, 10.24 ERA, $-200):
When talking about the Mets starting pitching, most people have only good things to say. Unless, your name is Zack Wheeler, whose 2019 campaign has not started well.

The right-hander has a 1.86 WHIP and a .391 opponent on base percentage through his first two starts to go along with his ugly ERA. To be fair, both of his starts have come against the Nationals, so, maybe a different opponent will get him on the right track. Wheeler and the Mets visit the Braves as light -104 dogs tonight with a total of 9.

    3 STRIKES

    COMFORTABLE IN KC

Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco has never mined playing the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, even when they were good. Carrasco has made 10 starts there over the course of his career with the Indians winning eight of those games. He has pitched to a 2.90 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP while racking up 67 punch outs. Carrasco starts there tonight as a -155 road favorite and a total of 7.5. Consider Cleveland here.

    OUR FAVORITE UNDER UMP

C.B. Bucknor is back behind the plate tonight in San Francisco as the Giants. Bucknor is infamously known for his inconsistent strike zone and that has been a boon for total bettors the last several seasons, as the Under has gone 39-19-3 in the last 61 games when Bucknor is calling balls and strikes. That’s a 67.2 percent cash rate in a big sample size. The total for tonight’s Rockies-Giants game is currently sitting at 8.

    NLCS REMATCH

The Brewers will get a chance to avenge their NLCS loss to the Dodgers when they begin a three-game weekend set in Los Angeles tonight. The Dodgers took the series in seven games where the Under went 4-2-1 with an average of 6.7 runs per game. But both teams have been riding their offenses early in the season and today’s starters Corbin Burns and Julio Urias, have a combined ERA of 13.02 (most thanks to Burns). Take a look at the Over 8 in this NLCS rematch.

    • Red Sox beat Orioles 6-4 for 1st wins streak of season
      April 12, 2019
      By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Gold Glove center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made two key catches and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 Friday night, giving the World Series champions their first two-game winning streak of the season.

Baltimore's Chris Davis lined out as a pinch-hitter to end the game, extending his record hitless streak for a position player to 0 for 54.

Andrew Benintendi homered and Xander Bogaerts had three hits, helping Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2) and the Red Sox improve to 5-9.

Bradley made a diving grab in the fourth, then ended a threat in the eighth with by robbing Joey Rickard of extra bases and Baltimore of a run. Bradley planted his right foot in the padding of the Green Monster and pushed himself just high enough off the wall to grab the ball.

The catch helped preserve a 4-2 lead and Boston tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, one on a sacrifice fly by Bradley.

Rodriguez (1-2) had a strong start, keeping the Orioles hitless through four and taking a shutout into the seventh. He allowed two runs on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He was pulled after Dwight Smith Jr. hit a two-run homer to pull the Orioles within 3-2.

David Hess (1-2) gave up three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

      ATHLETICS 8, RANGERS 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Khris Davis hit his major league-best 10th homer, his fifth in three games being a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning, as Oakland rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Texas.

Ramon Laureano hit a game-tying homer to start the seventh for the A's.

Davis, coming off consecutive two-homer games in Baltimore, was 0-for-3 with a fielder's choice RBI before his one-out 426-foot shot to center in the eighth off Chris Martin (0-1) made it 7-6.

Elvis Andrus and Asdrubal Cabrera homered for the Rangers.

Lou Trivino (1-0), Oakland's third pitcher, worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Blake Treinen got the final four outs, including three strikeouts, for his fifth save in six chances.

      ASTROS 10, MARINERS 6

SEATTLE (AP) - Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel hit grand slams and Houston limited heavy-hitting Seattle by using two starting pitchers.

Altuve's career-best fourth straight game with a home run pushed the Astros' major league-leading winning streak to seven games.

Seattle had its six-game winning streak halted.

The combination of starter Wade Miley, a former Mariners pitcher, and Brad Peacock (2-0) helped Houston hold down the Mariners.

But, Tom Murphy managed to extend the Mariners' major league record home run streak. Seattle has homered in each of its first 16 games, with a ninth-inning solo shot off reliever Chris Devenski.

Miley and Peacock combined to pitch 7 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. They held the Mariners hitless for four innings, a stretch of 14 batters with just one baserunner, who reached on a walk. Roberto Osuna earned the save.

Mariners reliever Shawn Armstrong (0-1) took the loss.

      BREWERS 8, DODGERS 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Yasmani Grandal had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs in his first game back at Dodger Stadium, leading Milwaukee past Los Angeles in a rematch of last year's NL Championship Series.

The former Dodgers catcher put a changeup from Julio Urias (0-1) over the wall in left field to put Milwaukee on top for good.

There were five home runs in the game and all but one produced a lead change.

Hernan Perez also homered for the Brewers, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Matt Albers (1-0), the second of six Milwaukee pitchers, got the win. Corbin Burnes started and allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers clubbed three homers, but have dropped five straight. Cody Bellinger had a two-run shot to right in the third for his NL-leading eighth, and Corey Seager and Joc Pederson also went deep.

Urias went five innings and gave up six runs, including five earned, and six hits.

WHITE SOX 9, YANKEES 6, 7 INNINGS, RAIN

NEW YORK (AP) - Eloy Jimenez hit his first two major league homers, including a tiebreaking shot in the fifth inning, and Chicago ended a five-game skid by beating banged-up New York in a rain-shortened game.

Jimenez's two-run drive off Jonathan Holder made it 7-5, and he added a 446-foot solo homer in the seventh. James McCann followed with his first homer of the season, and then umpires pulled the teams off the field with one out. The game was called about 40 minutes later.

The game started in a steady mist, and the rain worsened as the night wore on.

Chicago starter Lucas Giolito (2-1) had a pitch sail out of his hands to the backstop in the fifth, Yankees lefty J.A. Happ (0-2) bounced an unusual number of breaking balls and White Sox right-hander Nate Jones struggled with his grip while escaping a jam in the sixth.

The Yankees have lost four straight.

      RAYS 11, BLUE JAYS 7

TORONTO (AP) - Austin Meadows and Brandon Lowe each hit two home runs, becoming the first teammates to hit upper deck homers at Toronto in the same game in the win for Tampa Bay.

The Rays won their fifth straight. It's the second time this season Tampa Bay has won five straight.

Toronto trailed 8-0 before putting the tying run at third in the eighth inning. Facing Luke Maile with the bases loaded, Tampa Bay's Diego Castillo fell behind 3-0 but responded with three straight strikes, catching Maile looking to end the threat. Ryan Yarbrough (2-1) picked up the win.

Willy Adames gave the Rays some breathing room with a two-run homer off Javy Guerra in a three-run ninth. The Rays had a season-high 16 hits.

Meadows and Lowe became the 17th and 18th players to reach the 500 level of seating at Rogers Centre, which opened in 1989.

Blue Jays right-hander Trent Thornton (0-1) allowed five runs and eight hits in three-plus innings, his first loss in three career starts.

      CUBS 5, ANGELS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Willson Contreras homered twice on a blustery day at Wrigley Field as Cole Hamels and Chicago stopped Los Angeles' six-game win streak.

Anthony Rizzo and David Bote also connected to help Chicago win for the third time in four games. Hamels (2-0) pitched eight innings in his second straight victory, improving to 5-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 12 career starts against Los Angeles.

The Angels played without star center fielder Mike Trout, who missed his second straight game after he strained his right groin during the team's last homestand.

Albert Pujols went deep for Los Angeles in its first trip to Wrigley since 2016.

But the Angels were unable to overcome a rough outing for Tyler Skaggs (1-2), who surrendered three long home runs in his four innings.

      ROYALS 8, INDIANS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Gordon homered, doubled twice and singled as Kansas City stopped a 10-game losing streak, racing to a big lead and beating Cleveland.

Gordon homered during a six-run first inning against Carlos Carrasco (1-2).

The Royals hit for the cycle in the opening inning - Whit Merrifield led off with a single, Adalberto Mondesi followed with a triple and Gordon homered, with Chris Owings' two-out, two-run double finishing Carrasco.

Brad Keller (2-1) gave up one run on three hits, striking out a career-high 10 in 6 2/3 innings. He has pitched at least six innings in nine straight starts, the longest active streak in the majors.

      PHILLIES 9, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Jake Arrieta allowed one run in seven innings to earn his 100th career victory and Philadelphia sent Miami to its fifth consecutive loss.

Arrieta (2-1) took a 6-0 lead into the seventh, when the Marlins ended a streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings on Austin Dean's sacrifice fly. He gave up five hits, struck out eight, lowered his ERA to 2.25 in three starts and improved to 100-68 in 10 seasons.

The Phillies' J.T. Realmuto hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the first inning, but finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. The game was his first at Marlins Park since Miami traded him in February.

Andrew McCutchen had three hits, including a three-run homer in the eighth. Bryce Harper had an RBI and two hits to hike his average to .325 as the Phillies tied a season high with 14 hits.

Sandy Alcantara (1-1) gave up six runs and 11 hits while working five innings. The Marlins have lost nine of their past 10 games.

      METS 6, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer, Jeff McNeil added a two-run double and New York kept hitting even without Pete Alonso.

New York has scored six runs in six straight games. This time they did it without Alonso, the team's hottest hitter, who got most of the night off. The first-place Mets, who have won three straight, scored four times in the fourth inning on McNeil's hit and RBI doubles from Robinson Cano and Michael Conforto.

Zack Wheeler (1-1) worked six solid innings, allowing six hits, two runs and three walks while striking out eight.

Braves rookie starter Kyle Wright (0-2) gave up eight hits, six runs and four walks and struck out three in 3 2/3 innings.

New York improved to 8-3 against division opponents (9-4 overall). Atlanta dropped to 2-6 against the NL East.

      PIRATES 6, NATIONALS 3, 10 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Colin Moran had a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the 10th inning and Pittsburgh scored five runs off Washington's struggling bullpen.

Moran's homer to right center off Justin Miller was his second as a pinch hitter in 34 at-bats. Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak in Washington and spoiled a two-homer night for the Nationals' Anthony Rendon.

Starling Marte hit a two-run single off Kyle Barraclough in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead. But Rendon hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Nick Burdi (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth for his first big league win, and Felipe Vazquez pitched the 10th for his fourth save.

Nationals starter Patrick Corbin struck out 11 and allowed one run in seven innings. Lefty Matt Grace (0-1) took the loss.

      PADRES 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Manny Machado homered and Chris Paddack limited Arizona to three hits over 5 1/3 innings to lead first-place San Diego.

In addition to his home run, Machado made a fine defensive play on a sharp grounder up the third base line late in the game. Fernando Tatis doubled, knocking in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and San Diego won its third straight and fourth in five games.

Paddack (1-0) allowed one run and struck out five. Gerardo Reyes, called up earlier in the day, earned the win in his major league debut by getting two outs in the sixth inning.

Three Padres relievers held the Diamondbacks hitless over 3 2/3 innings, including Kirby Yates' scoreless ninth for his National League-leading eighth save.

Luke Weaver (0-1) retired nine straight from the fourth to the seventh inning before giving up back-to-back, one-out doubles to Wil Myers and Tatis.

Arizona has lost three in a row and four of five.

          Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

          13) Marquette guard Markus Howard will play his senior year at Marquette instead of testing the waters in the NBA, which is surprising.

Howard is from Arizona, but transferred to Findlay Prep in Las Vegas after his sophomore season in HS, then skipped his senior year altogether to go to Marquette, at age 17. When you do that, you’re pretty much accelerating the clock for when you can play in the NBA.

For a player like this to stay four years in college is very unusual.

          12) Then there is Kevin Porter Jr, who declared for the draft after scoring 9.5 ppg in 21 games (4 starts) as a freshman at USC. He played 22.1 mpg, missed 11 of the Trojans’ 33 games, shot 41.2% on the arc, 52.2% on foul line. This is a player who is listed as a top 15 talent in the draft, but what about this past season indicates that? He started four games for a 16-17 USC team.

          11) Louisville poached St. Joseph’s G Lamarr Kimble as a grad transfer, a big pickup.

          10) Lakers fired Luke Walton Friday; can’t be lot of fun hanging around there these days. Walton is expected to land in Sacramento as the Kings’ new coach.

Tyronn Lue is expected to get the Lakers’ job; no shock considering he coached Lebron James in Cleveland.

          9) Toronto Raptors’ forward OG Anunoby had an emergency appendectomy, is expected to miss at least two weeks.

          8) Random stat: Raptors have played in 15 NBA playoff series; they lost the first game of those series 13 times, going 3-12 vs spread overall.

          7) July 31, 2018, the Pirates traded Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows and a minor leaguer to Tampa Bay, for Chris Archer.

Archer is a good pitcher, but Glasnow allowed one run in 17 IP in his first three starts, and now Meadows has knocked in 15 runs in Tampa Bay’s first 13 games.

Rays have played seven games on this road trip; they’ve scored in top of the first inning in every game.

          6) Interesting fact from Anthony Castrovince: 154 position players retired with only one career plate appearance in the major leagues; 16 of them got a hit. Only five of them are still alive.

          5) Baseball season is 16 days old; Bronx Bombers already have 12 players on the IL.

          4) Cardinals’ OF Harrison Bader was hit by a pitch with bases loaded twice Wednesday, first time that happened since 2005 (Reed Johnson, Toronto).

          3) NFL Draft is two weeks away; some notes:
          — Most picks: Giants, Patriots, 12 each
          — Fewest picks; Seattle (4).
          — Multiple 1st round picks: Oakland 3, Packers/Giants (2).
          — No 1st round pick: Dallas-Browns-Saints-Bears.

          2) Kid who scored 15.8 ppg LY for Bucknell will go to Kentucky next year as a grad transfer. Stuff like this is why there were fewer first round upsets in NCAA’s this year. The better players in the low major conference have big eyes, hoping to play a season getting on national TV a lot.

          1) Not that the NBA playoffs are boring, but since 1988, there have been 136 playoff series where the underdog was +$500 or higher; of those 136 series, the favorite won 129 of them.

Does anyone think there is a team that can beat the Warriors best-of-7, unless Golden State gets at least two starters hurt? Nah, me either.

            • LEADING OFF: Cards-Reds in Mexico, suspended Archer starts
              April 12, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

              MEXICAN MATCHUP

Major League Baseball returns to Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey when the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds begin a two-game series. Adam Wainwright starts for the Cards against Tanner Roark.

The Astros and Angels play a two-game series at the same park in early May.

MLB began holding regular season games in Mexico in 1996, and the 1999 season opened with a matchup in Monterrey between the Padres and Colorado. Last May, the Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers played a three-game series at the stadium - Walker Buehler and the Dodgers bullpen combined for a no-hitter.

              EASY DOES IT

Pittsburgh's Chris Archer makes his first start since being suspended for touching off a bench-clearing fracas at PNC Park last Sunday.

Archer threw a fastball behind the waist of Cincinnati's Derek Dietrich, who had stood in the batter's box to admire a long home run in his previous at-bat. There were five ejections - Archer wasn't tossed.

Archer was suspended five games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. He appealed the penalty and can continue to play until there's a final ruling. Archer and the Pirates visit Washington.

              TRYING AGAIN

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (0-2, 6.48 ERA) has struggled in each of his first two outings, yielding 18 hits in 8 1/3 innings. He starts at Wrigley Field against the Angels, who won't have star Mike Trout this weekend because of a strained groin.

              WELCOME BACK

Edwin Jackson has agreed to a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics, which last year became his record-matching 13th big league team. A's manager Bob Melvin says the 35-year-old righty will go to the team's spring training facility in Arizona before pitching in some games for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Jackson also signed a minor league deal with the A's last June, and then was 6-3 with a 3.33 ERA in 17 starts for Oakland, which was 14-3 in those games. With his A's debut, Jackson matched former reliever Octavio Dotel's record of pitching for 13 different teams.

                      18 And Life

The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies played into the wee hours on Friday night, going 18 innings before the Giants finally outlasted the Rockies 3-2. The game ended just before 1:00 a.m. PDT, and they have a quick turnaround with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch in San Francisco. LHP Kyle Freeland and LHP Madison Bumgarner might find some tired, slugging hitters stepping into the box. It's not like that two offenses have been tearing it up anyway.

The Rockies are 9-1 in Freeland's past 10 starts against the National League West, and 6-2 in the left-handers past eight road outings. They're also 23-8 in the past 31 starts overall by Freeland. In addition, they're 5-2 in the past seven road starts by Freeland against teams with a losing record. However, they have dropped six in a row inside the division while going 0-5 in the past five vs. LHP. The Rockies are also 2-5 in the past seven road outings against a southpaw pitcher. For the Rockies, they have also dropped eight of their past 10 games at Oracle Park (formerly AT&T Park), while going 1-4 in the past five meetings overall.

The under is 10-1 in the past 11 meetings in this series, and 20-8-1 in the past 29 meetings in San Francisco, including the first two in this series. The under is also 4-1 in MadBum's past five outings against the Rockies, and 6-2 in the past eight starts by Freeland against the Giants. The under is 22-7-1 in Freeland's past 30 starts against NL West foes, while the under is 20-6-2 in the past 28 at home for the Giants. The under is also 12-3-1 in the past 16 home starts by MadBum, whiole going an impressive 16-5-2 in his past 23 starts against the NL West.

                      Looking Ahead

                      Saturday, April 13

The A's and Rangers continue their battle in Arlington with RHP Marco Estrada and RHP Adrian Sampson facing off. Will someone be able to cool off Khris Davis? He swatted his league-leading 10th home run in Friday night's game. The A's have won four in a row on the road, and they're 42-15 in the past 57 against teams with a losing record. They're also 3-9 in the past 12 road starts against a right-handed starter. They're a dismal 0-4 in the past four starts by Marco Estrada. The Rangers have won just one of the past six, and they're 18-38 in the past 56 against teams with a winning record. However, they're 0-4 in the past four starts by Sampson, while going 0-4 in the past four vs. AL West opponents. The over has hit in each of the past four meetings, and is 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings in Arlington. The A's have also won five in a row in Texas, and 22 of the past 30 overall in this series.

The Astros and Mariners continue their AL West set at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field) on Saturday night. Houston has rattled off four consecutive victories aginst divisional foes, while going 4-0 in the past four against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, the 'Stros are a perfect 5-0 in their past five tries against AL West opponents. RHP Justin Verlander will be toeing the slab, and the Astros have won 19 of his past 23 starts on the road, while winning nine of his past 11 starts and five starts in a row on the road against teams with a winning overall mark.

For the M's, they're 7-1 in the past eight games inside the division, while going 13-3 in the past 16 games vs. RHP. In addition, they're 5-1 in the past six at home against righties, while going 17-5 in the past 22 games overall. However, they have a dismal 3-9 in the past 12 starts by Felix Hernandez, and 2-5 in his past seven at home. They're also a dismal 1-9 in the past 10 starts by King Felix against teams with a winning record. Houston has won 35 of their past 52 trips to Seattle, while the M's are 4-1 in Hernandez's past five starts at home against the Astros. Something's gotta give. The over is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in Seattle, while going 8-3-1 in Hernandez's past 12 starts against Houston.

                      Weather Report

The weather during the daytime looks fine with no wind issues swaying the total. However, for the 6:10 p.m. CDT game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds we should see plenty of wind in Monterrey Baseball Stadium in Mexico. The forecast calls for temperatures near 90 degrees at game time with winds blowing out to the left-center field power alley at 13-16 mph.

In Arlington, the A's and Rangers might experience a lengthy delay, as the forecast calls for 70 percent or greater chances of rain until around midnight local time. If and when they do get underway, the wind is forecast from 18-22 mph to blow out to straightaway center field. Those are the only potential trouble spots.

                      Sunday, April 14

The Cardinals will look to continue their strong play with RHP Miles Mikolas on the hill. They're 13-2 in his past 15 starts against losing teams, while going 6-1 in his past seven on the road. They're also a whopping 14-2 in the past 16 outings while working on five days of rest. It's the complete opposite picture for RHP Anthony DeSclafani and the Reds. They're 0-4 in DeSclafani's past four against NL Central teams, 0-6 in their past six starts overall and 0-5 in the past five starts against teams with a winning overall record. However, the Reds are 4-0 in the past four home starts by DeSclafani against the Cards, and they're 4-1 in his past five against St. Louis. The under is 4-0 in DeSclafani's past four home starts against the Cards, too.

After taking a licking in Friday's game in Kansas City, the Indians look to bounce back Sunday with their ace RHP Corey Kluber on the bump. The Indians have posted a 13-3 record in the past 16 road outings by Klubot against teams with a losing record, and they're 35-16 in his past 51 starts against AL Central foes. However, they are just 2-5 in his past seven road outings. Royals RHP Jakob Junis has been a mess. The Royals are 7-16 in the past 23 starts, while going 2-11 in his past 13 outings against teams with a winning record. They're also 1-6 in his past seven at home against teams with a winning overall mark. The over is 5-1 in Kluber's past six road starts against the Royals, and the Indians are just 2-8 in his past 10 starts at Kauffman Stadium.

In the Sunday night game in Atlanta, the Mets will wheel out RHP Jacob deGrom and the Braves will counter with RHP Julio Teheran. The Mets are 4-0 in deGrom's past four starts against divisional foes, while going 4-1 in the past five road outings. For the Braves, they're 4-1 in Teheran's past five home starts, while going 9-2 in his past 11 home outings against teams with a winning record. They're 7-3 in Teheran's past 10 starts overall, too. The under is a solid 21-8-2 in the past 31 starts overall by deGrom, while going 5-1-1 in his past seven on the road. The over is 4-1 in the past five starts overall, but the under is 20-8-1 in the past 29 home outings by Teheran. The under is also 4-0 in the past four home starts by Teheran against the Mets, and 5-2 in his past seven overall vs. NYM. The under is 6-2 in deGrom's past eight starts on the road against the Braves, while going a perfect 6-0 in his past six against Atlanta.

                      Weather Report

The winds will pick up in the nation's capital for the series finale between the Pirates and Nationals. The wind will be gusting from 10-13 mph out to the left-field power alley. In Kansas City, the wind will be blowing from left field to first base at a 10-13 mph clip, possibly knocking down any potential fly balls.

On the north side of Chicago, there is snow in the forecast for the first pitch. There is a 75 percent chance of snow, tailing off by 3:00 p.m. CDT. There will be a cold wind, too, blowing 16-19 mph from left-center field into the face of the batters. In other words, very miserable and un-April-like conditions. Since it's an interleague game between the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs, they'll likely do anything they have to do to get this game in, even if it doesn't start until the evening after a lengthy delay. While temperatures will be freezing or below by 5 p.m. CDT, the precipitation chances will be 20 percent or less.

In Texas, and in San Francisco, the winds will be blowing out to straightaway center field at a 10-13 mph clip, so watch the overs in those two contests.

On Sunday night, the Mets and Braves will see a 13-16 mph wind blowing right to left, knocking down balls hit up into the air.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (2-1, 2.84 ERA, $100):
After being rudely welcomed to the season by the Astros, Snell as looked like his Cy Young self since. The lefty has allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out 24 in 13 innings over his last two starts.

Today, Snell will try to keep it going against the Blue Jays today in Toronto, a team he dominated last season. Snell made three starts against the Jays last season, pitching to a 0.54 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP while racking up 27 punch outs. If you’re looking to bet this game, consider the Rays runline.

                          SLUMPING

Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox (0-2, 13.50 ERA, $-262):
Much has been made of the Red Sox’s struggles in the starting rotation and Porcello might be the worst of the bunch at this point. The former Cy Young award winner has allowed over half of the batters he has faced to reach base over his first two starts, resulting in a God awful 3.14 WHIP.

Porcello will try to get back on track as he takes the mound today against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox are currently -250 home favorites with a total sitting at 11.

                          3 STRIKES

                          O’s NO

The Baltimore Orioles are regressing to form after a solid start to the season (at least for them). The Orioles have dropped eight of their last nine ball games, losing those contests by an average of 5.4 runs per game. However, Baltimore has a little value today as big +225 road dogs today in Boston getting to go up against our Slumping Starter, Rick Porcello.

                          HOMER’S UNFORTUNATE ODDESY

Homer Bailey starts for the Royals today and boy, we sure hope he wins. For his sake. Bailey’s teams are 1-21 in his last 22 starts dating back to last season and his first two start in Kansas City haven’t shown much more promise. The poor guy has pitched to a 9.00 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in his first two starts for the Royals. If his slide ends it will come against Cleveland, where the Indians are slight -112 road faves.

                          A ROAD WARRIOR

Getting traded to the Astros in August of 2017 revitalized Justin Verlander’s career. And while he’s has been great for the ‘Stros, he has been truly outstanding on the road. The Astros have won 17 of Verlander’s 20 road starts, with him pitching to a 2.26 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in the process. He will be a hefty -190 road favorite tonight in Seattle.

                          • Orioles' Chris Davis ends 0-for-54 skid in win over Red Sox
                            April 13, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Chris Davis ended his record slump at 0 for 54 and drew applause from rival fans at Fenway Park, getting three hits and driving in four runs as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Saturday to end a four-game losing streak.

Davis walked to the plate in the first inning to what mostly appeared to be mock cheers when he was announced. But many of those quickly changed when he lined a bases-loaded, two-run single over the head of second baseman Dustin Pedroia, ending the longest hitless streak ever by a position player. Once he safely reached first, Davis tipped his cap to the Orioles dugout and many of his teammates raised their arms and hollered in support. He smiled and made a motion that he wanted to ball, which he got.

Davis, a former two-time major league home run champion, later hit two doubles. He had been 0 for 33 this season. The all-time record for a hitless streak by any player is an 0-for-85 drought by pitcher Bob Buhl in 1962-63.

Christian Vazquez hit a two-run homer and drove in a career-best four runs for the World Series champion Red Sox, who had won their last two games.

Andrew Cashner (3-1) gave up three runs on three hits in five-plus innings. Rick Porcello (0-3) pitched into the fifth.

                            ASTROS 3, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Jose Altuve homered for the fifth straight game, Justin Verlander (2-0) struck out eight of the first 10 batters he faced and finished with a season-high 11, and the Houston Astros won their eighth straight.

Altuve homered for the sixth time in the past five games with a solo shot off Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (1-1) in the fifth inning. Altuve is the first Astros hitter to homer in five straight games since Morgan Ensberg set a franchise record with six straight in 2006. Robinson Chirinos also homered as Houston handed Seattle consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Mitch Haniger hit a solo home run with one out in the fourth inning, extending Seattle's MLB-record streak of 17 games with a home run to begin a season. Seattle has 38 homers in 17 games, but was held to a season low in runs. It was just the third time Seattle was held to less than six runs.

                            YANKEES 4, WHITE SOX 0

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia began his 19th and final big league season with five stellar innings, pinch-hitter Luke Voit came through with a broken-bat RBI single in the seventh and the Yankees ended a four-game slide.

Sabathia allowed one hit and no other baserunners in his return from the injured list, and Domingo German (3-0) followed by striking out four in two overpowering innings.

Jose Rondon had Chicago's only hit, but the second baseman also booted a likely double-play grounder to set up Voit's hit. With the bases loaded, New York's beefy, breakout slugger split his bat in two but still muscled a single to center against Ryan Burr for a 1-0 lead. Kyle Higashioka followed with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right, and Tyler Wade brought in another run with a safety squeeze. Aaron Judge narrowly homered into the short right field porch in the eighth, his fourth of the season.

White Sox starter Ivan Nova (0-2) dueled with Sabathia, pitching four-hit ball into the seventh.

                            ANGELS 6, CUBS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Zack Cozart broke out of a slump with three hits and Cody Allen wiggled out of a jam in the ninth inning, helping Los Angeles win for the seventh time in its last eight games.

Ty Buttrey (1-0) earned his first major league win in his 23rd appearance, and Tommy La Stella reached four times against his former team. Allen struck out Daniel Descalso with two runners on in the eighth, and then closed it out for his fourth save.

Cozart went 1 for 33 in his first 13 games this season. But he hit an RBI single in Los Angeles' three-run second and singled again in the fourth and eighth.

Playing without Mike Trout once again because of a groin injury, the Angels stopped a five-game road slide. Trout is receiving treatment in Southern California and could rejoin the team during its next series in Texas.

Kyle Hendricks (0-3) allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits in five innings in his third consecutive loss to begin the year.

                            TWINS 4, TIGERS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Michael Pineda labored through six innings, Eddie Rosario drove in two runs and the Twins edged the Detroit Tigers. Byron Buxton and Jorge Polanco added RBI singles for Minnesota.

Christin Stewart homered for Detroit, which has lost three of four.

In his third start, and longest outing of the season, Pineda (2-0) allowed three earned runs and eight hits, striking out five on a 37-degree day. The big righty, who had Tommy John surgery in July 2017 and did not play in 2018, has 15 strikeouts in 15 innings this season. Trevor Hildenberger and Taylor Rogers each pitched a scoreless inning, and Blake Parker got the last three outs for his third save.

Detroit starter Tyson Ross (1-2) allowed four earned runs and five hits in six innings.

                            GIANTS 5, ROCKIES 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Madison Bumgarner pitched into the eighth inning to give a weary bullpen much needed rest and the Giants beat Colorado to hand the Rockies their eighth straight loss.

After outlasting the Rockies 3-2 in an 18-inning game that took over 5 + hours and ended shortly before 1 a.m., the Giants came back about 12 hours later and wrapped up this win in 2 hours, 48 minutes.

Bumgarner (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits. The big lefty struck out seven, walked one and didn't allow a runner past first base until the sixth when Garrett Hampson doubled in Charlie Blackmon. Sam Dyson pitched the ninth for his first save.

Recently acquired Kevin Pillar homered off Kyle Freeland (1-3), his fourth in six days for the Giants. Buster Posey got two hits and drove in his first run this season - the star catcher had zero RBIs in 40 at-bats over his first 12 games.

Mark Reynolds homered for the Rockies (3-12), who are off to their worst start in franchise history.

                            BLUE JAYS 3, RAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to help the Blue Jays overcome reigning AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell's no-hit bid in a win over Tampa Bay, snapping the Rays' five-game winning streak.

Snell didn't allow a hit until Luke Maile singled with one out in the sixth.

With two runners on base and one out in the seventh inning, Gurriel Jr. drove a pitch from reliever Chaz Roe (0-2) off the center-field wall, giving the Blue Jays their first lead of the series.

Reliever Thomas Pannone (1-2) got the victory after pitching a scoreless seventh, while starter Clay Buchholz earned a no decision in his Blue Jays' debut. Ken Giles got the last three outs for his fourth save.

                            NATIONALS 3, PIRATES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adam Eaton and Howie Kendrick homered on consecutive pitches in the eighth inning and the Nationals rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After Richard Rodriguez (0-1) retired the first two batters in the eighth, Eaton tied it with his first home run of the season. Kendrick then connected for his second.

Anthony Rendon doubled to break a Nationals record with at least one-extra base hit in 10 straight games. He had shared the mark with Ryan Zimmerman.

Wander Suero (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth and Sean Doolittle escaped his own first-and-second, one-out jam for his first save.

Melky Cabrera hit his first home run of the season, tagging Anibal Sanchez to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

                            MARLINS 10, PHILLIES 3

MIAMI (AP) - Newcomer Austin Dean had four hits and five RBIs, both career highs, to help the Marlins break a five-game losing streak.

Dean hit his first major league homer and also drove in two runs with his first career triple to complete a 4-for-4 night. The performance came in the outfielder's second game since being recalled from Triple-A to make his season debut with the Marlins.

The Marlins won for only the fourth time this year. They broke out of a slump with a season-high 18 hits after being outscored 30-2 in their previous four games.

Miami homered three times off Zach Eflin (2-1) in the third inning, including Dean's homer and back-to-back shots by Brian Anderson and Neil Walker. Caleb Smith (1-0) needed 29 pitches to get through the first but settled in to pitch six scoreless innings. The only hit he allowed was a double by Andrew McCutchen in the third.

                            REDS 5, CARDINALS 2

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Derek Dietrich hit a tiebreaking homer off Adam Wainwright in the seventh inning and added a two-run triple as Cincinnati Reds won its fourth straight game, beating St. Louis in the raucous Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey.

The start of the two-game series marked the first time either team had played in the regular season in Mexico.

Wainwright hit an RBI single in the second off Tanner Roark to give the Cardinals, who had won five in a row, a 1-0 lead. Jesse Winker's one-out homer in the sixth was the Reds' first hit off Wainwright (1-1).

Kolten Wong hit a leadoff home run against Zach Duke to begin the Cardinals ninth. Raisel Iglesias relieved and, after St. Louis put two runners on base, retired Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong for his second save. Jared Hughes (1-0) got two outs for the win.

                            ROYALS 3, INDIANS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Homer Bailey (1-1) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and the Royals won their second straight after a 10-game skid.

Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect eighth and Willy Peralta followed in the ninth for his first save to complete the two-hitter. Ryan O'Hearn homered, and Whit Merrifield and Adalberto Mondesi each had an RBI single for the Royals.

Jefry Rodriguez (0-1) gave up two runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings in his first start with Cleveland.

                            BRAVES 11, METS 7

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit a go-ahead RBI single in the second inning, Ronald Acuna Jr. had his fifth straight multihit game and the Braves snapped the New York Mets' three-game winning streak.

Dansby Swanson drove in three runs, while Acuna, Nick Markakis and Johan Camargo each added two RBIs. Josh Donaldson went 2 for 3 and hit his first homer with the Braves in the seventh.

Touki Toussaint (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day, earned the win with six strong innings of relief of starter Sean Newcomb, who last just 1 1/3 innings. Toussaint allowed four hits, one unearned run and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Reliever Corey Oswalt (0-1) allowed six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings after replacing starter Jason Vargas, who gave up two hits, four runs and three walks in one-third of an inning.

                            PADRES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run homer and Franmil Reyes had a tiebreaking solo shot to lift San Diego to its fourth straight win.

Tatis' two-run homer, the rookie shortstop's fourth of the season, off Merrill Kelly gave the Padres a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Reyes' go-ahead shot in the seventh pushed the Padres to the win after Arizona tied it with four runs in the sixth.

Craig Stammen (2-0) got the final two outs of the sixth inning for the victory. Kirby Yates gave up a leadoff double to Ketel Marte in the ninth inning before striking out the next three for his major league-leading ninth save. Matt Andriese (2-1) took the loss.

                            BREWERS 4, DODGERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mike Moustakas and Orlando Arcia homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers sent the Dodgers to their sixth straight loss.

The Dodgers didn't have a hit after Alex Verdugo's leadoff single in the fifth inning. Brewers pitchers retired the final 14 batters. Milwaukee turned three double plays behind Zach Davies (2-0), who allowed one run and eight hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked none. Junior Guerra earned his first save.

Cody Bellinger hit his NL-leading ninth homer on his bobblehead night. The Dodgers' 33 homers top the NL.

Caleb Ferguson (1-1) started in a bullpen game for the Dodgers, and allowed one run and four hits in 2 2/3 innings.

                              • Sunday’s 6-pack

Something I found this week contained these suggestions for being happy:
                                — Return everything you borrow.
                                — Admit it when you a mistake.
                                — Stop blaming other people.
                                — Listen more, talk less.
                                — Realize and accept that life isn’t always fair.
                                — Don’t sweat the small stuff; its all small stuff.

                                Quote of the Day
“If you’re going to boo, then stay on that side. That’s how I feel, if you’re a Sixer fan and you’re going to boo then stay on that side.”
Ben Simmons, a little salty after the home folks got restless during Game 1 Saturday

                                Friday’s quiz
Chase Field in Arizona has a swimming pool behind the fence in right-center field.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                                14) Get well soon to Mets’ broadcaster Ron Darling, who is taking a medical leave from his TV gig. Darling is one of the best broadcasters on TV; he will be missed. Get well soon, sir.

                                13) Someone at the Westgate SuperBook placed a $3,000 bet on the Clippers to beat Golden State in their first round series at 100-1 odds. Yikes.

                                12) Nets 111, 76ers 102— Far be it from me to question the Sixers’ focus, but Amir Johnson had a cellphone on the bench during the game; at one point, he and Joel Embiid were looking at something on it, while sitting on the bench. Didn’t look like a video of the Brooklyn offense. Or defense.

Apparently Johnson’s daughter was ill and he was checking in on her during the game.

Then there is this: “Use of a cell phone on the bench is a violation of the NBA Operations Manual. Violation will result in a substantial fine and/or suspension.”

                                11) Giants 5, Rockies 2— These two teams are only ones in major leagues this season that haven’t scored a run yet in the first inning. Colorado hasn’t scored in first two innings yet this year.

                                10) Rockies-Giants game lasted so long Friday night (18-inning game ended at 3:50am here in NY) that the seagulls that usually hover over the Giants’ ballpark late in games took off about an hour before the game ended.

                                9) Still don’t understand why some teams bat their pitcher 8th. Tony LaRussa did it, and Joe Maddon has done it, but neither one of them ever did it in a playoff game, and until that happens, then it is just a gimmick.

                                8) Sacramento Kings hired Luke Walton as their next head coach.

                                7) Baseball injuries:
                                — Texas 2B Rougned Odor (knee) heads to the IL.

                                6) Orioles 9, Red Sox 5— Chris Davis had three hits in five plate appearances in this game. Coming into Saturday, Davis had three hits in his previous 83 PA’s.

                                5) Tampa Bay’s Tommy Pham has now reached base in 47 consecutive games; the record is 84, held by Ted Williams.

                                4) Duke played 26 basketball games on ESPN this season. 26 out of 38, and their four games in NCAA’s were all on CBS/Turner.

                                3) There are 60 international players from 29 countries on NBA playoff rosters; every playoff team has at least two international players, with Utah (6) having the most.

                                2) Going to be cruddy weather in Georgia Sunday; The Masters moved up tee times in the final round to 7:30am, with CBS coming on the air at 9am. Mets-Braves is the Sunday night ESPN game; doesn’t sound too promising for that game to be played.

                                1) AAA Rochester Red Wings scored 18 runs Saturday….and lost, 20-18 in 10 innings.

There is a sign on the scoreboard at Rochester’s stadium, sponsored by baldness.com. Having a sign on a scoreboard can’t be cheap. Must be good money in baldness.
