        • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

          STREAKING

Max Fried, Atlanta Braves (3-0. 1.38 ERA, $168):
The 25-year-old lefty has been lights out this year for Atlanta with a WHIP of just 1.04 through four starts. He's coming off a game against Cleveland where he won a duel against Tribe pitcher Shane Bieber by allowing two earned runs through 6.1 innings. Tonight he'll get a juicy matchup against the Colorado Rockies who are in the bottom third of the league in batting average, runs per game and homeruns. The Braves are -165 favorites at home.

          SLUMPING

Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (1-3, 4.45 ERA, -$601):
The three-time Cy Young Winner is off to a terrible start in 2019, especially by his lofty standards. In five starts this year, he's come away with just a single win and even in that victory he allowed four earned runs through 6.1 innings. In his last start he was dinged for 11 hits and six earned runs in just over five innings of work against the Marlins.

But there are signs that Scherzer's still capable of being a dominant pitcher, he's whiffed 44 batters this year in just 32.1 innings. He'll try to return to form at home against the San Diego Padres today, with the Nationals -192 favorites. Since he joined Washington in 2015, Scherzer's pitched in 28.2 innings over four starts against the Padres with just four earned runs and 44 strikouts.

          3 STRIKES

          JACOB DEGROM DAY

We're still going to mention Jacob deGrom day, how can we not with the first five innings Under cashing in 25 of his last 31 starts, but that might be a bet to avoid versus the Milwaukee Brewers. DeGrom was scratched from his previous start with pain in his right elbow and while his MRI came back clean and he is expected to get the nod tonight, there are questions after his last two starts. His second-last start he allowed six runs over four innings to the Twins which snapped an incredible 26-game streak of quality starts.

ALL THEY DO IS WIN, WIN, WIN NO MATTER WHAT

Despite having a lineup decimated by injuries the Yankees continue to play well (last night's loss to the Angels notwithstanding). New York is 6-1 in their last seven games overall and head to San Fran to take on Madison Bumgarner and the Giants. New York is 12-5 in their last 17 interleague games on the road while the Giants are 3-7 in their previous 10 interleague games at home and just 1-6 in Bumgarner's last seven starts overall.

          ALL OVER YOU

Quite a few betting trends are leading towards the Over in tonight's matchup between the Rangers and Mariners. The Over is 5-1 in the Rangers last six games overall, and 6-1 in Shelby Miller's last seven starts. While the Over has cashed in four of the Mariners last five games and in each of Yusei Kikuchi's previous five starts.

          Diamond Trends - Friday
          Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Twins are 21-0 SU as a 140+ favorite off a game as a dog in which their bullpen allowed multiple runs and it is before the All-Star break.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Marlins are 0-23 SU as a road dog of more than 135 after a game in which they had at least five more team-left-on-base than their opponent.

          Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Marlins are 0-19 SU in franchise history as a 160+ dog after a game in which Starlin Castro had multiple hits and at least four at bats, getting beat by an average of 5.68 runs per game. Brutal.

          Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Nationals are 8-0 SU with Max Scherzer when they lost in his last two starts, winning by an average of 4.75 runs per game.

          • Jays rally to top A's in Vlad Jr.'s debut
            April 26, 2019
            By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. capped his major league debut with a double leading off the ninth inning for his first hit, and Brandon Drury followed with a winning two-run homer with two outs to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Friday night.

The 20-year-old son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, considered the top prospect in the major leagues, grounded out in the second, was robbed of an extra-base hit by left fielder Stephen Pinder's leaping catch in the fourth, then flied out to right in the sixth.

Guerrero hit an opposite-field double down the right-field line on a 2-2 fastball from Yusmeiro Petit (0-1). Billy McKinney sacrificed pinch-runner Alen Hanson and, with the infield in, Teoscar Hernandez lined out to second baseman Jurickson Profar.

Drury followed with a drive over the center-field wall.

Ken Giles (1-1) struck out two on a one-hit ninth.

Eric Sogard's first-inning homer and Randal Grichuk's third-inning RBI single built a lead off Mike Fiers, but Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Joe Biagini.

Guerrero Jr. missed the start of the season after an oblique injury in spring training.

            ANGELS 5, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the first inning and moved past Lou Gehrig into fourth place on the career RBIs list, and Tyler Skaggs pitched five shutout innings in Los Angeles' win over Kansas City.

Pujols has 1,995 RBIs, one behind Barry Bonds in third place. Only Hank Aaron (2,297) and Alex Rodriguez (2,086) have more than 2,000 RBIs.

Skaggs (2-2) continued to baffle the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. The left-hander didn't allow a run in five innings plus one batter.

The Royals' Danny Duffy (0-1) gave up three runs on five hits in five innings in his first start of the season after spending the nearly two months on the injured list with left shoulder impingement.

            WHITE SOX 12, TIGERS 11

CHICAGO (AP) - Tim Anderson helped turn Jose Abreu's three-run homer into a two-run single when he tagged up at first and was passed on the bases, then hit a winning home run in the ninth that capped a comeback from a seven-run deficit and gave Chicago a win over Detroit.

Trailing by seven runs in the fifth, the White Sox closed to 10-9 with a five-run sixth off Zac Reininger that included home runs by Jose Rondon and Abreu.

With two on and one out in the seventh, Abreu hit a drive off Reed Garrett that just cleared the wall in left-center for an apparent 12-10 lead. But Anderson tagged up at first and Abreu passed him, and after a video review Abreu was called out and the lead was reduced to 11-10.

Ronny Rodriguez hit a tying home run in the eighth, and Anderson homered with two outs in the ninth against Joe Jimenez (1-1).

Anderson and Abreu had four hits each, and Abreu homered and had five RBIs.

Alex Colome (1-0) pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth for the win. Yonder Alonso also homered for the White Sox.

Miguel Cabrera had four hits, including his first home run since last April 28. Nicholas Castellanos connected for the second time in two games, and Grayson Greiner and JaCoby Jones also homered.

            DODGERS 6, PIRATES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Los Angeles set a major league record with homers in 33 consecutive home games in a win over Pittsburgh.

Bellinger's blast was noteworthy for other reasons, too. He moved into a tie for the major league lead for home runs with the Milwaukee Brewers' Christian Yelich at 13 and set the major league record for total bases in the months of March-April with 88. He also set a Dodgers' record for home runs in March-April, moving past Matt Kemp.

With home runs in their first 14 home games this season, the Dodgers also matched this year's Milwaukee Brewers and the 1962 New York Mets for most consecutive home games with a home run to open a season.

Josh Bell hit a home run for the Pirates, who were otherwise held in check by Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Pirates lost a season-worst sixth consecutive game.

Ryu (3-1) struck out 10 and gave up two runs over seven innings in his second start since returning from the injured list due to a strained left groin.

Pirates starter Chris Archer (1-2) gave up six runs on six hits over four innings,

            INDIANS 6, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit two of Cleveland's four home runs and drove in three runs to help beat Houston.

Carlos Gonzalez and Leonys Martin also homered to help the Indians to their second straight win over the Astros.

Tyler Naquin had two hits and his RBI double in the seventh off Hector Rondon (2-1) and put Cleveland up 4-3 for its first lead of the game.

Lindor, who came off the injured list on Saturday, had a solo shot in the third and connected on a two-run homer in the ninth.

Brad Hand walked one in a scoreless ninth for his eighth save.

Cleveland's Corey Kluber allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings, the third straight start in which he's given up at least three runs. Adam Cimber (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win.

            PADRES 4, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking solo drive in the ninth inning, and San Diego topped Washington after Carter Kieboom went deep for the Nationals in his major league debut.

Renfroe, who entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning, drove Sean Doolittle's 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center for his fifth homer. It was only the second run allowed by Doolittle (3-1) in 12 appearances.

Craig Stammen (3-1) got the win despite allowing Kieboom's solo homer in the eighth.

Kirby Yates worked the ninth for his major league-best 13th save. He struck out Kieboom to escape a bases-loaded jam.

Washington ace Max Scherzer struck out 10 while allowing two runs over seven innings. He retired his first 13 batters before Eric Hosmer homered in the fifth. He became the 35th player in major league history to record 2,500 strikeouts when Manuel Margot was caught looking in the sixth. Scherzer ended the night at 2,503 Ks.

            ROCKIES 8, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Nolan Arenado combined with Trevor Story to homer on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning, then hit a tiebreaking double in the sixth that led Colorado to its ninth win in 11 games.

Daniel Murphy went 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Rockies, who had seven extra-base hits.

Tyler Flowers homered twice for the Braves, who have lost three of four.

Story homered to tie the score 1-1 and Arenado connected on a curveball. Story has hit safely in a career-best 14 straight games.

Ender Inciarte's RBI single tied the score in the bottom half, but Story, Arenado and Murphy hit consecutive doubles for a 4-2 lead in the sixth against Max Fried (3-1).

Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela (2-1) gave up three runs, seven hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Wade earned his fourth save in four chances.

            YANKEES 7, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Luke Voit homered and had three hits and three RBIs, DJ LeMahieu also had three hits and scored three runs, and injury-depleted New York beat San Francisco.

Despite having a major league-high 13 players on the injured list, the Yankees have won seven of their last eight games and nine of their last 11.

Buster Posey had a double and two RBIs for the Giants, who were seeking their first four-game winning streak.

James Paxton (3-2) gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings of five-hit ball after combining for 14 shutout innings in his previous two starts. He struck out eight and walked none.

Giants starter Madison Bumgarner (1-4) gave up five runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

            TWINS 6, ORIOLES 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit two of the Minnesota's five home runs in the win over Baltimore.

Cruz, Eddie Rosario and C.J. Cron hit consecutive home runs in the first inning off Alex Cobb (0-2), with Cruz and Rosario connecting on back-to-back pitches. Max Kepler homered off Cobb in the fourth, and Cruz homered against Gabriel Ynoa in the fifth.

Baltimore has allowed 64 home runs in 27 games - no other major league team had given up more than 46 entering Friday.

Rosario has 11 homers, all since April 6, and 22 RBIs in his last 17 games.

Martin Perez (3-0) gave up one run and six hits in six innings.

Dwight Smith Jr. singled in a run for Baltimore in the sixth.

Trey Mancini had three hits for Baltimore. Mancini has hit safely in eight straight games and entered the day leading the AL in hits.

            PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jerad Eickhoff pitched seven crisp innings and Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer in Philadelphia's win over Miami.

J.T. Realmuto and Maikel Franco also went deep for the Phillies, who won for just the third time in nine games.

Jorge Alfaro had two of Miami's five hits. The Marlins, who began the day in a tie with Kansas City for the worst record in the majors, dropped to 8-18.

The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 33 minutes due to rain.

Eickhoff (1-1) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one. It was the right-hander's second start and third appearance of the season after making just one start in 2018.

            REDS 12, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Joey Votto, Yasiel Puig and Eugenio Suarez homered, and Cincinnati snapped St. Louis' five-game win streak.

Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker also connected as the Reds matched a season high with five homers in their third win in four games. Anthony DeSclafani tossed six scoreless innings in his first win since Aug. 28.

St. Louis ace Miles Mikolas (2-2) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings.

Matt Carpenter had two hits and walked twice for St. Louis, which finished with eight hits. Carpenter scored on Paul DeJong's single in the eighth for the Cardinals' only run.

DeSclafani (1-1) gave up four hits in a 91-pitch outing. He struck out six and walked three.

            BREWERS 10, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Lorenzo Cain drove in three runs and robbed Todd Frazier of a homer with another spectacular catch, helping Milwaukee beat Jacob deGrom and New York.

Milwaukee had lost seven of eight, but it roughed up a shaky deGrom after the start of the game was delayed for 2 hours, 42 minutes due to rain. Eric Thames hit a two-run double during the Brewers' five-run third, and Orlando Arcia added a two-run single.

DeGrom (2-3) walked three and hit two batters over four innings in his first start since April 14.

The right-hander struck out seven on a damp, chilly night at Citi Field. He has a 9.69 ERA in his last three starts.

            DIAMONDBACKS 8, CUBS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Wilmer Flores drove in three runs, helping Arizona beat Chicago for its season-high fifth straight victory.

Adam Jones added three hits and two RBIs as Arizona won for the 10th time in 12 games overall. Nick Ahmed hit a two-run triple in the Diamondbacks' three-run fifth inning.

Kris Bryant and Javier Baez homered for Chicago, and Albert Almora Jr. collected four hits. But the Cubs were unable to overcome another shaky performance by Kyle Hendricks, who was coming off his best start of the season.

The Diamondbacks jumped on Hendricks (1-4) for three runs in the first.

Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray (1-1) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings. Matt Andriese pitched three innings for his first save.

Hendricks was charged with seven runs and 10 hits in five innings.

              • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

                — Arizona traded QB Josh Rosen to Miami for a 2nd round draft pick.

                — Warriors 129, Clippers 110— Durant had 38 points at halftime.

                — Bronx 7, Giants 3— SF scored its first 1st-inning run this season.

                — There were 18 trades made at the NFL Draft Friday.

                — 12 of 14 SEC teams had a player taken in rounds 1-3 of the draft; only Arkansas/Tennessee didn’t- Baylor WR Jalen Hurd started his career as a RB at Tennessee.

                — Virginia’s national championship basketball team declined an invitation to visit the White House.

                **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                13) Last winter, Texas Tech fired its football coach; just a few weeks ago, Arkansas fired its basketball coach. How did both of these guys wind up with better jobs?

Kliff Kingsbury is now head coach of the Arizona Cardinals; Mike Anderson jumps from the Razorbacks of the SEC to St John’s in the Big East.

                Life can be strange.

                12) This week, the governors of Indiana, Iowa, Montana all had sports betting bills on their desks; New Jersey has a thriving sports betting business going. Meanwhile, here in the state I live in, the state of New York (some say I live in a state of confusion, but they mean something else) is dragging its feet on sports betting. God forbid some of us have fun here.

                11) Tuesday night, Damian Lillard hit a 30-footer to send Oklahoma City home for the summer; Paul George called it “…..a bad shot.” But was it?

Research shows that this season, Lillard is 20-54 (37%) from that distance, which is an unusually high %age for such a long shot (30-40 feet). I’m guessing Billy Donovan was happy enough with his defense when Lillard launched the shot, but then it went in and it was game over for the Thunder.

If you double-team Lillard and force him to pass, he’ll find the open man, but would you rather have that open (lesser shooter) person take the shot?

                10) Portland’s Enes Kanter after the Trailblazers beat Oklahoma City: “First I would like to definitely thank the Knicks for waiving me.” Wow.

                9) There is NOTHING in sports as dramatic as overtime in Game 7 of an NHL playoff series, and it really isn’t very close.

                8) Eight teams left in NHL playoffs, but once again, no Canadian franchise will win the Stanley Cup. Last time a Canadian franchise won the Cup? Montreal in 1993.

                7) From Howard Balzer: “Word is that small hands (9 inches) behind absence of QB Drew Lock from first round of the draft. Used smaller ball at Missouri. Hand size of Kyler Murray, 9 1/2; Dwayne Haskins 9 5/8; Daniel Jones 9 3/4.”

Jared Goff also has 9” hands, and he’s doing pretty well in the NFL.

                6) Tampa Bay Rays’ utility guy Joey Wendle hit .300 LY with 61 RBI; he was a valuable guy. He had already missed 17 games this year with a hamstring injury, then he got hit with a pitch and broke his wrist Wednesday. Tough start to this season for him.

                5) Blake Griffin played 28:00 in Game 4 of the Pistons’ playoff loss to Milwaukee Monday nite; less than 48 hours later, he had his knee scoped in Los Angeles.

                4) Former Houston Texans’ QB David Carr was on NFL Network the other night, ranking the QB’s from this year’s draft AND last year’s draft. He ranked Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson 8th out of the nine QB’s ranked, which seems ridiculous to me.

Jackson started seven NFL games last year and was 6-1 as a starter; he may not be a great passer, but he started seven games and won six for a team that was 4-5 with Joe Flacco starting; Jackson ran for 95+ yards in three games. His talent is unique to the league; there is no bleeping way a college kid is better than he is right now.

                3) Blue Jays’ 1B Justin Smoak was in the lineup last night when Vladimir Guerrero Jr made his MLB debut. When Smoak made his MLB debut for Texas in 2010, the Rangers’ DH that night was Vladimir Guerrero Sr.

                2) Missouri, Oklahoma, Wichita State all offered QB Drew Lock basketball scholarships; he went to Missouri and played football, and last night Denver picked him in the second round.

                  Saturday, April 27

The Athletics and Blue Jays do battle north of the border in a 3:07 p.m. ET start, with LHP Brett Anderson going for the A's and RHP Aaron Sanchez toeing the slab for the Jays. For what it's worth, the A's are 14-5 in their past 19 games on a Saturday. More importantly, they're 57-25 in the past 82 games against losing teams prior to Friday's game. While they're also 12-5 in the past 17 starts by Anderson against a losing team. they're just 1-4 in his past five on the road against losing teams, and 1-7 in his past eight starts on the road overall. The Jays enter this one 5-0 across the past five starts by Sanchez at home, and they're 10-4 in his past 14 overall. In addition, they're 4-1 in his past five at home against winning teams, although just 5-11 in his past 16 overall against winning sides and 1-4 in his past five against the American League West Division.

For the second consecutive day, the Yankees and Giants have a lefty-on-lefty battle in San Francisco. Friday's game featured LHPs James Paxton vs. Madison Bumgarner, while Saturday will have LHP J.A. Happ against LHP Derek Holland. The Yankees are 6-1 in Happ's past seven road outings, 12-5 in his past 17 overall and 7-3 in his past 10 against teams with a losing overall record. The Giants are 1-5 in Holland's past six starts overall, and 1-6 in his past seven against winning teams while going 1-4 in his past five outings at home.

The Rangers and Mariners tangle at T-Mobile Park on Saturday night in a 'Battle of Mikes' with LHP Mike Minor against RHP Mike Leake. The Rangers are just 2-5 in Minor's past seven starts overall and 3-8 in his past 11 against teams with a winning overall record. However, the Rangers are 6-2 across Minor's past eight starts inside the division. The M's are 5-1 in their past six at home against left-handed starting pitchers, while going 9-3 in the pas 12 vs. LHP overall. They're also 4-1 in Leake's past five at home, while going a perfect 5-0 in his past five starts on a Saturday.

In the late game, RHP Joe Musgrove looks to turn things around against the Dodgers in L.A. The Bucs are just 1-6 in Musgrove's past seven starts on the road, 1-6 in his past seven against the NL West and 1-4 in his past five on the road against teams with a winning overall record. LHP Clayton Kershaw is on the bump for the Dodgers, and L.A. is 43-12 in his past 55 home outings, while going 49-15 in his past 64 at home against winning teams. The over is 4-1 in Kershaw's past five outings against Pittsburgh, although the under is 4-1 in his past five home starts against the Pirates.

                  Weather Report

The Reds and Cardinals will face overcast conditions at Busch Stadium and a stiff wind blowing 15-18 mph from first base to left field. In D.C. the wind will be blowing from third base to first base at a 12-15 mph clip, dying down by the final innings of the game. The Rays and Red Sox will also be dealing wit ha stiff wind blowing out from home plate to right field at a steady 15-17 mph clip. The same holds true for the Marlins and Phillies, blowing out of the bandbox at 'The Vault' with a 13-17 mph wind to right field. For the Brewers-Mets in New York, the winds gust left to right at 11-14 mph.

Wind will be an issue all over the Midwest, too. For the Tigers-White Sox, a chilly rain turning to, believe it or not, snow, will be falling, so expect a cancellation. If they do get underway, it will be a raw, cold wind blowing in from 20-24 mph. For the Angels-Royals in K.C. they will have a 17-21 mph wind blowing from third to first base, knocking down fly balls for right-handed hitters.

                  Sunday, April 28

RHPs Pablo Lopez and RHP Zach Eflin do battle in Philadelphia in the series finale. Eflin has been up and down during the early going, posting just two quality starts in six starts so far this season, compiling a 2-3 record and 4.15 ERA. That includes a loss in Miami on April 13 in his first start against the Marlins, allowing season highs of six earned runs and 10 hits in just four innings. Lopez also has a 2-3 record and a 4.44 ERA, so total bettors might be leaning to the over. However, watch the wind, as it will be blowing in hard (see below). Lopez posted his first quality start of the season last time out, posting just one unearned run, two hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in Cleveland.

RHP Lance Lynn takes the ball for the Rangers, facing RHP Erik Swanson of the Mariners. Lynn has been very giving, posting a 2-2 record and 6.51 ERA through five starts. He was tuned up for a season-high eight earned runs and nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings in a loss in Oakland on April 23 last time out. He needed an awful 23.7 pitches per inning. The Rangers are 1-2 in his three outings against American League West Division foes so far this season. Swanson is winless in two starts and three appearances, although he has a quality start in his only start this season in Seattle. He allowed one earned run, two hits and no walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss against Cleveland.

The Indians and Astros do battle on Sunday Night Baseball, and it looks like RHP Carlos Carrasco (knee) will be a go for his scheduled start. He left his last outing in the fifth inning after a collision, suffering a knee ailment. He went for what was called a precautionary MRI and everything checked out fine and he is expected to be able to go. It's been a tough go for Carrasco by his standards, going 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA through five starts. However, he has been his usual self from a strikeouts perspective, whiffing 33 over just 21 innings. LHP Wade Miley will take the ball for the Astros, and he enters with a 1-2 record and 3.58 ERA over 27 2/3 innings across five outings. He has back-to-back quality starts heading into this one, although he is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA over the 12-inning span. The Astros are 3-1 over his past four starts, including 2-0 at home this season.

                  Weather Report

The rains will be rolling in midway through the afternoon game between the Rays and Red Sox. The Marlins and Phillies will be battling winds from 12-15 mph from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters, making 'The Vault' play bigger than it is. For the Padres-Nationals series finale, the winds will be gusting 15-18 mph blowing directly from the center field seats into home plate.

Like Saturday, the Midwest will be under the gun as far as winds are concerned. In both Minnesota and Kansas City, the winds will be blowing from first base to third base at a 12-15 mph clip, limiting the ability of left-handed power hitters for the O's-Twins and Angels-Royals games. Those will be the only trouble spots, with a handful of games in neutral conditions in venues with retractable roofs.
