How Nevada casinos made their money in July:

    $10.5M— sports betting

    $32.2M— roulette

    $39.3M— craps

    $77.1M— baccarat

    $87.2M— blackjack

    $307.1M— penny slots

    Quote of the Day
“Just because you’re sitting behind a microphone broadcasting a game does not make you a journalist. It makes you a broadcaster. I think there’s a difference. That might seem a little quaint as well, but I think with the term journalist, you’ve had some actual training, and that there is at least a theoretical canon of ethics, and you’re there to tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may… Even the best team broadcasters in any particular sport wouldn’t necessarily be journalists.”
    Bob Ley

    Thursday’s quiz
Which (retired) quarterback has started the most games for the Los Angeles Rams?

    Wednesday’s quiz
Lovie Smith was the Chicago Bears’ coach last time they played in a Super Bowl.

    Tuesday’s quiz
Dan Reeves was the Falcons’ coach the first time they played in the Super Bowl.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

    13) Monday, a courageous soul in Las Vegas wagered $33,000 on the Colts (+7) in Week 1 against the Chargers. That gambler has lot of faith in Jacoby Brissett.

    12) New England Patriots made two trades for offensive linemen Wednesday, addressing their need for depth on their front line.

    11) Cubs 10, Mets 7— Chicago pounded Noah Syndergaard for eight runs in first two innings.

    10) This is a little weird: Eagles backup QB Josh McCown will be on the sidelines at Myers Park HS in Charlotte every Friday night this fall as an assistant football coach, in addition to playing for the Eagles on Sundays, and practicing with the team during the week. McCown plans to fly to rejoin the Eagles on Friday night/Saturday morning each week.

    9) Life for a marginal big league pitcher: Astros’ pitcher Cy Sneed has been called up from AAA/sent back to AAA five times in the last 48 days. Lot of frequent flyer miles.

    8) Back in 2000, David Glass bought the Kansas City Royals for $96M; he is expected to sell the ballclub soon, with the price expected to be a little over $1B. Thats billion, with a B.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Dodgers’ 3B Justin Turner was suspended for a game for making contact with an ump.
    — Giants DFA’d 2B Scooter Gennett.

    6) Obscure stat of the day, from Christopher Kamka: Lou Piniella hit 102 career home runs, most ever by a player who never hit two home runs in a game.

    5) Perk to being an NBA player: Myles Turner and Brook Lopez acted as roadies for Fleetwood Mac Tuesday night in Sydney, Australia— that must have been fun.

    4) More and more, you hear NFL-types talking about how teams holding joint practices is more productive than exhibition games. The practices are over a 3-4 day period and starters can get 80+ good reps in different situations, and against other starters.

In coming years, we’ll likely see only two preseason games a year, and more joint practices.

    3) Jeremy Lin signed a deal to play basketball in China this winter.

    2) Indianapolis Colts now have $56.6M in salary cap space, $19.6M more than any other team in the league (Houston is 2nd).

    1) Raise your hand if you’ve heard this before; USC QB Jack Sears will enter the transfer portal and will play elsewhere in 2020-21, as a graduate transfer, because he lost the starting job to sophomore QB JT Daniels. Apparently Sears is going to graduate from USC in only three years. Because of that, he can still be on the Trojans’ roster this year, and play elsewhere in 2020.

      • LEADING OFF: DeGrom aims to right Mets, Ryu tries to rebound
        August 28, 2019
        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

        DOING IT ALL

Jacob deGrom (8-7, 2.56 ERA) tries to stop the Mets' five-game skid when he faces Cubs lefty Jon Lester (10-9, 4.49) in a series finale between playoff hopefuls at Citi Field. Last year's NL Cy Young Award winner, deGrom has pitched himself right back into contention this season and leads the league with 207 strikeouts. He fanned 13 over seven innings and homered last time out but the Mets lost 2-1 to Atlanta in 14 innings. The right-hander is the first pitcher since at least 1900 to homer and strike out 13 or more in the same game twice in one season.

        BUMP IN THE ROAD

Major league ERA leader Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-4) looks to rebound from a rough outing when he pitches for the NL West-leading Dodgers at Arizona. The All-Star lefty gave up a grand slam to Didi Gregorius last Friday and was tagged by the New York Yankees for a career high-tying seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings - his shortest outing since June 28. It was Ryu's second consecutive loss, and his ERA jumped from 1.64 to 2.00.

        RED HOTS

Aristides Aquino and Eugenio Suarez are providing lots of long balls for Cincinnati, and will try to power up again at Marlins Park.

Aquino tied the National League rookie record for home runs in a month with his 13th on Wednesday night. The 24-year-old outfielder, who got just one at-bat in the majors last season, has broken loose since being promoted from the minors on Aug. 1. He matched the NL homer mark for rookies in a month set by Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers in June 2017.

The major league rookie record for homers in a month is 18 by Rudy York of Detroit in August 1937.

Suarez hit his 38th home run, connecting in the fourth straight game. The Reds will try for a four-game sweep when they face rookie Robert Dugger, who was hit hard earlier this month in his first start.

        ON THE WAY

Cleveland pitcher Carlos Carrasco is set to return to the majors, coming back after being diagnosed with leukemia in May. Indians manager Terry Francona told MLB Network Radio the team plans to activate Carrasco from the 60-day injured list Sunday, when rosters can expand to 40 players.

The 32-year-old Carrasco has made three rehab appearances so far with Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, permitting one run while striking out six in 3 2/3 innings. He will make one final minor league appearance and, assuming all goes well, will join Cleveland's bullpen as he continues to build endurance in his arm.

        JUST LOOKIN'

Nationals reliever Roenis Elias is ready to come off from the injured list this week. Acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline, the left-hander strained his hamstring running out a grounder on Aug. 2 in his first game for Washington.

The injury came in his seventh career at-bat in the majors. He has a plan for the next time he comes to the plate to avoid any more pain on the bases.

''That's prohibited for me anymore,'' Elias said through a translator. ''So if they want to throw three straight fastballs down the middle, go ahead. I'll take all of them.''

In New York, LHP Jon Lester tries not to suck for manager Joe Maddon, while RHP Jacob deGrom works for the homestanding Mets. The under is 4-0-1 in Lester's past five assignments on the road, although the over is 8-3 in his past 11 road outings against winning teams, and 12-3 in the past 15 against the National League. The over is also 3-1-1 in Chicago's past five against teams with a winning overall record, and 3-1-1 in the past five vs. RHP. The over is 5-1-1 in Chicago's past seven against the NL East, too, while cashing in six of their past eight appearances on a Thursday, for whatever that's worth.

As far as the Mets are concerned, the under has been the rule lately. The under is 7-1-1 in the past nine vs. LHP, including 4-1 in the past five home games against southpaws. The under is 5-2 in the seven games overall, while going 5-2 in the past seven at Citi Field, too. Wind Report
Winds will be whipping at 10-13 mph from right field to third base at Comerica Park for the Indians-Tigers finale. The Athletics and Royals will also be dealing with a stiff 12-15 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field at Kauffman Stadium. Also in the finale, the Twins and White Sox will see a 15-18 mph wind blowing out to left field, assisting 'over' bettors rather nicely.

The only trouble spot on the evening card will be the Padres-Giants tilt at Oracle Park, with winds blowing 10-13 mph out to left field.

                  Friday, Aug. 30

The Mariners and Rangers lock horns in Arlington, with LHP Marco Gonzalez facing LHP Kolby Allard in Game 2 of their four-game set. The under is also 3-1-1 in his past five against losing teams, and 10-4-1 in the past 15 for Gonzales when working on four days of rest. The over is 5-2 in Gonzales' past seven against the Rangers, however. For Texas, the under is 4-1 in the past five against a left-handed starting pitcher.

For the Reds, RHP Trevor Bauer makes his sixth start since coming over from the Indians at the MLB trade deadline. The over and under have alternated in each of his past five outings since joining the Reds, and the over hit last time out. If the trend continues, it's under time for 'Bauer Outage'. As far as the Cardinals, the under is a perfect 8-0 in RHP Dakota Hudson's past eight home outings, and 4-0 in his past four starts overall. The under is also 4-0 in the past four against teams with a losing record, while going 4-1 in the past five against NL Central clubs. The under is 24-7 in St. Louis' past 31 at home vs. RHP, too.

In the late-night game, the Padres use RHP Dinelson Lamet against the Giants and LHP Madison Bumgarner. The under is 8-1 in the past nine outings on the road against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 11-5 in the past 16 overall against lefties. However, the over is 4-1-1 in Lamet's past six overall, and a perfect 4-0 in his past four against teams with a losing overall record. For the Giants, the under is 3-1-1 in the past five starts overall by Bumgarner, while going 5-1-2 in his past eight at home against teams with a losing record.

                  Wind Report
On Friday, winds will be rather neutral across most MLB venues. However, against at Oracle Park on the banks of San Francisco Bay, winds will be howling from 10-13 mph to straightaway center field, affecting to the total of the Padres-Giants battle.

                        STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                        STREAKING

Jacob deGrom, New York Mets (8-7, 2.56 ERA, $-1627):
Taking the first five innings Under in deGrom's starts was one of the most profitable bets in baseball in 2018. While it hasn't had the same success this year, the fault for that can't be placed on the Mets right hander. Every one of deGrom's last 17 games have been quality starts and in only one of those outings did he allow more than two earned runs (a three run, six-inning appearance against the Braves).

Since July, deGrom has gone 4-0 in eight starts, with a 1.22 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. Tonight, deGrom and the Mets are -195 favorites at home against the Chicago Cubs and starter Jon Lester. That said, the Mets are 0-5 in their last five games and are just 2-6 in deGrom's last 8 home starts.

The Cubs have struggled on the road all season but are currently riding a four game winning streak in away contests.

                        SLUMPING

Jose Berrios, Minnesota Twins (10-7, 3.53 ERA, $-250):
Berrios started the season off 8-2 with a 3.14 ERA but things have been rocky ever since. Despite being one of the top teams in the AL, the Twins are just 4-9 in Berrios' last 13 starts.

Over his last four starts, Berrios is 0-2 with a 8.44 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP. Today, Berrios and the Twins visit the Chicago White Sox as -182 favorites. It will be Berrios' fourth start against the White Sox this season, he's gone 2-1 in his first three games against them with a commanding 2.57 ERA.

                        3 STRIKES

                        GETTING HIS GROOVE BACK

After a bit of a Rocky start to his Astros career (Get it? He faced the Rockies in his first start as an Astro), Zack Greinke has looked like the guy we’re accustomed to seeing on the mound.

The former Cy Young winner has recorded a quality start in his last three outings, pitching to a 2.50 ERA and an 0.94 WHIP over that span. With Tampa Bay hitting just .217 against right-handed pitching over their last 10 games, taking the Astros on the runline against the Rays this afternoon isn’t the worst idea.

                        THE RETURN OF THE KING

Felix Hernandez pitched well in his first start since early May, allowing just two earned runs (both on solo home runs) on three hits over 5.2 innings pitched at home against the Blue Jays last Saturday.

Unfortunately, he faces a foe tonight, that is much more familiar with him: the Texas Rangers. “King” Felix owns a 6.66 ERA in 10 starts against the Rangers dating back to 2015. Mix in the fact he has to go up against one of the Rangers’ better starters in Lance Lynn, and the Rangers have value as a moderate fave.

                        14 RUNS AND RISING

The Rockies host the Pirates today and the O/U opened at a whopping 14 and has already moved to 14.5 at some books.

The Pirates have been one of the best Over bets in the majors going 76-53-4 O/U on the season, including 6-1 OU in their last seven games on the road. Games in Colorado have been even more ridiculously high scoring than in previous years, with teams combining to plate an average of 13.16 runs per game at Coors Field.

Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams has an ERA of 7.21 in 11 starts since June, while the Rockies will give the ball to Chi Chi Gonzalez who is 0-5 with a 6.43 ERA. Even with such a high total the Over holds value.

                        • Twins set major league record for home runs on the road
                          August 29, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Jake Cave homered twice, C.J. Cron went deep and the surging Minnesota Twins set a major league record for home runs on the road in a 10-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

Cave led off the third with drive off Dylan Cease (3-7) to give Minnesota 139 homers away from home, eclipsing the mark of 138 set by San Francisco in 2001. Cron, the next hitter, followed with a homer to center.

Cave added a shot in the seventh for his second career multi-homer game, increasing the Twins' overall total to 261. The record for homers in a season, 267, was set last year by the New York Yankees.

Cron doubled and had three RBIs in a three-hit game, and Nelson Cruz drove in three runs as the AL Central leaders won their fifth straight. In sweeping a three-game series with sliding Chicago, Minnesota (82-51) moved to 31 games above .500 for the first time since September 2010.

Jose Berrios (11-7) cruised to his first victory in nearly a month. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight in six innings.

Jose Abreu had four hits for the White Sox.

                          MARLINS 4, REDS 3, 12 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Aristides Aquino broke the National League rookie record for homers in a month with his 14th in August, but Harold Ramirez homered leading off the 12th inning for Miami, which avoided a Cincinnati four-game sweep.

Aquino hit a two-run homer in the first for Cincinnati, and added a two-out RBI single in the eighth.

Miami's Jon Berti, Austin Dean and Starlin Castro hit solo home runs off Alex Wood. Ramirez pulled a 1-1 pitch for his third career walk-off RBI against closer Raisel Iglesias (2-10).

The Marlins finished 1-6 in the season series with the Reds.

Aquino broke the rookie record of 13 in a month set by the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger in June 2017. The major league record by a rookie is 18 by the Tigers' Rudy York in August 1937.

Tyler Kinley (3-1) pitched two perfect innings for the win.

                          RAYS 9, ASTROS 8

HOUSTON (AP) - Ji-Man Choi hit a two-run double, Travis d'Arnaud homered and drove in four runs, and Tampa Bay beat Houston to avoid a three-game sweep.

Astros star Jose Altuve hit a tiebreaking solo leadoff homer in the sixth, his 25th, but Tampa Bay scored three runs in the seventh to make it 8-6. Tommy Pham had an RBI single off Chris Devenski (2-3), and Choi brought in two more with a drive to center.

Houston ended a seven-game winning streak, and the Rays snapped a season-high four-game road skid.

Jose De Leon (1-0) earned the win for the Rays, who used seven pitchers. Emilio Pagan earned his 15th save.

The Rays and Astros exchanged solo homers in the third, with Austin Meadows hitting his 24th and George Springer answering with his 28th to make it 2-2.

Abraham Toro led off the bottom of the ninth with his first career homer to make it 9-8 before the Rays held on.

                          INDIANS 2, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Mike Clevinger struck out 10 in eight innings, and Francisco Lindor homered to lift Cleveland past Detroit.

Cleveland swept the three-game series and is 15-1 against the Tigers this year. The Indians won 14 straight against Detroit.

Clevinger (10-2) allowed four hits and no walks in his longest outing of the season. He was lifted after 115 pitches, and Brad Hand worked a perfect ninth for his 33rd save in 38 chances.

Lindor opened the scoring in the third with a solo homer off Daniel Norris (3-11) and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

                          ATHLETICS 9, ROYALS 8

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jurickson Profar homered and drove in three runs and Seth Brown added two RBIs as Oakland beat Kansas City.

Everybody in the A's starting lineup had a hit or drove in a run, bailing out starter Chris Bassitt, who failed to survive the fifth before turning the game over to Yusmeiro Petit (4-3). Liam Hendriks earned his 17th save.

Glenn Sparkman (3-10) also failed to make it through the fifth for Kansas City, allowing seven runs, nine hits and a walk. He also hit a pair of batters in losing his fifth straight decision.

                          CUBS 4, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Victor Caratini homered twice off ace Jacob deGrom, including a tiebreaking, three-run drive in the seventh inning that powered Chicago past New York for a three-game sweep.

Jon Lester (11-9) limited the Mets to five hits and pitched six effective innings as the Cubs increased their lead for the second NL wild-card spot to 2 1/2 games over Philadelphia.

Caratini lofted a solo homer in the second that made it 1-all. That was the Cubs' only hit until they struck in the seventh.

DeGrom (8-8) got little run support as the Mets lost their sixth straight.

J.D. Davis homered for the third straight game in the series and Wilson Ramos doubled, singled and extended his hitting streak to 22 games, the longest in the majors this season.

Craig Kimbrel earned his 13th save in 15 chances.

                          MARINERS 5, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Austin Nola hit a sacrifice fly that scored Dee Gordon with the tiebreaking run in the top of the ninth inning and Omar Narvaez added an insurance run with an RBI single as Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak.

Matt Magill (4-1) allowed one base runner in the eighth and ninth innings.

Jose Leclerc (2-4) allowed both runs in the ninth inning on two singles and two walks. The Rangers lost for the fifth time in seven games. Willie Calhoun homered in the first inning for Texas.

Felix Hernandez came away with his second straight no decision after missing more than three months with a lat strain. Hernandez allowed all three runs on five hits and struck out three.

Lance Lynn gave up three runs, one earned, in six innings. He struck out five, raising his season total to 202 and becoming the eighth pitcher in Texas club history to strike out 200 or more in a season.

                          PIRATES 11, ROCKIES 8

DENVER (AP) - Kevin Newman had two homers among his four hits and drove in three runs, Jose Osuna also homered and Pittsburgh beat Colorado.

Newman homered to lead off the game, igniting a seven-run first that he capped with his second hit of the inning, a two-out RBI single that chased Colorado starter Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-6). It was the second career leadoff home run for Newman, who also did it June 27 at Houston.

Adam Frazier added four hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles, and Colin Moran had two hits, including a two-run double in the Pirates' big first inning.

Trevor Williams (7-6) went seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits in helping the Pirates win for the fifth time in seven games. He struck out six and walked none.

                          PADRES 5, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Chris Paddack rebounded from his worst start of the season, throwing one-run ball over seven innings and leading San Diego to the win over San Francisco.

Manuel Margot and Austin Hedges homered for San Diego, which had lost seven of eight against San Francisco. Josh Naylor added two hits and scored a run.

Brandon Belt hit his 15th home run for the Giants.

The Padres won after arriving in San Francisco around noon Thursday. San Diego lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in extra innings on Wednesday night and missed curfew to make their flight at the airport.

Paddack (8-7) had eight strikeouts and gave up five hits.

Dereck Rodriguez (5-7) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.

                          DIAMONDBACKS 11, DODGERS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Eduardo Escobar hit his 30th home run, Wilmer Flores had three hits and three RBIs and Arizona defeated Los Angeles' Hyun-Jin Ryu for the first time in four tries this season.

Escobar's three-run homer in the sixth inning gave Arizona a 10-4 lead and made him the fourth switch-hitter in major league history with at least 30 homers, 20 doubles and 10 triples in the same season. He has 24 doubles and 10 triples.

Nick Ahmed had two hits and two RBIs, and Adam Jones had a two-run double as Arizona scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings off Ryu, who tied season highs in runs and hits allowed 10).

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

                              13) Saturday’s Boise State-Florida State game has been moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee, because of the upcoming tropical storm. Kickoff was moved up to noon ET.

As a result, the line moved from Florida State -5 to 6.5; if you wagered on the game before the site changed, apparently those tickets are now void.

                              12) Speaking of noon ET starts, the Pac-12 is actually discussing having some of their teams play HOME games that start at 9am Pacific time, starting next season. Seriously.

Why would a fan want to go to a football game that starts at 9am on a Saturday? Just so teams can be seen on TV across the country earlier in the day? It makes no sense.

                              11) This is a tough week; between now and 4:00 Saturday, around 1,200 guys are going to get cut from NFL rosters. 300 or so of them will get re-signed to practice squads, another 300-400 will wind up playing in the XFL in February, but playing on fall Sundays is a player’s dream.

                              10) From Phil Rogers: Cleveland Indian starting pitchers have thrown 115+ pitches in 15 games this season, but Trevor Bauer had the first 13 of those— he’s on the Reds now.

No other team has had more than eight such games this year.

                              9) Random observation; hitters swing at 3-0 pitches a lot more than they used to.

                              8) Baseball stuff:
                              — Royals shelved P Brad Keller (innings limit) for the rest of the season.
                              — Oakland put DH Khris Davis on the paternity list.

                              7) Utah 30, BYU 12— Game was shortened by a lightning storm; wagers on the game will all be refunded, since game didn’t reach the last 5:00.

                              6) Cincinnati 24, UCLA 14— Yardage was 417-218 Bearcats; UCLA has a major problem- their QB isn’t very good. Bruins turned the ball over four times, twice in the red zone when their QB simply dropped the ball when he was preparing to pass- thats just not acceptable.

                              5) I have been critical of ESPN the last couple years, but the late SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt is excellent television; he gets it. It is worth your time to watch; highlights, sometimes an obscure highlight, gambling-related tidbits, and just good solid sentiment about what life should be like. In short, a lot of thought goes into making this show every night.

                              4) Marlins 4, Reds 3 (12)— Aristides Aquino hit his 14th homer this month, the most homers a rookie has ever hit in one month. He hit .241 in AA last year. Go figure.

                              3) I’m probably late with this, but apparently there are places now where you can go and throw axes at targets, kind of like darts except you’re throwing freakin’ axes. Competitive axe throwing is a thing, and this is news to me. Do they serve alcohol at those places?

                              2) Glad to see that DirecTV has the local ABC affiliate back up and running in time for the college football season. Their business would take a hit if they’re blacking out stations that show football. Getting the Pac-12 Network would also be a help.

                              1) SouthPoint Casino posted a prop for Saturday’s college football; which team will score the first touchdown in the noon ET kickoffs?
                              Nebraska +$275
                              Ohio State 7-2
                              Ole Miss 4-1
                              Mississippi State 9-2
                              Memphis 7-1
                              Illinois 13-1
                              Indiana 14-1

                              • LEADING OFF: Wild-card hopefuls set for key weekend series
                                August 29, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

                                STILL FIGHTING

The Rays got themselves off the ropes by rallying late to beat Houston on Thursday night, ending a four-game skid. Now the AL wild-card hopefuls open a pivotal three-game home series against Cleveland. The Indians are 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot, with Oakland one game ahead for the Rays for the second. All-Star Game MVP Shane Bieber (12-6, 3.23) is set to pitch or Cleveland against RHP Austin Pruitt (2-0, 5.57).

                                PULLING AWAY?

The Cubs host the Brewers hoping to bury another NL wild-card competitor after sweeping the Mets over three games this week. Chicago pulled five games ahead of New York for the second wild card and is four games ahead of Milwaukee. LHP Jose Quintana (11-8, 4.05) will start for the Cubs in the matinee against RHP Chase Anderson (6-3, 4.34).

Meanwhile, the Mets will try to snap a six-game skid in the opener of a series at Philadelphia, which is just 2 1/2 games behind Chicago. New York RHP Zack Wheeler (9-7, 4.46) is set to face Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola (12-4, 3.53).

                                HELLO AGAIN

A week after completing a sweep of the Yankees in Oakland, the A's head to the Bronx for a three-game set. The club hopes to get third baseman Matt Chapman back in the lineup. He was held out Thursday a night after taking a pitch off his helmet from the Royals' Jakob Junis. He entered as a defensive replacement Thursday but did not take any at-bats. It's also possible infielder Sheldon Neuse will make his major league debut. The 24-year-old was called up Thursday with Khris Davis on paternity leave. Neuse is hitting .317 with 27 homers and 102 RBIs with Triple-A Las Vegas. Bay Area-native CC Sabathia (5-8, 4.99) is set to start for New York against LHP Brett Anderson (10-9, 4.08).

                                ARISTIDES DEVELOPMENT

Less than a month into his big league career, Aristides Aquino has already swung his way into the record books. The Reds rookie clubbed his 14th homer since his call-up Aug. 1 on Thursday night, setting the NL rookie mark for homers in a month. The Dodgers' Cody Bellinger held the previous record of 13, set in June 2017. The major league rookie mark is 18 by the Tigers' Rudy York in August 1937. Aquino can break a tie with Frank Robinson (1962) and Greg Vaughn (1999) for the franchise monthly homer record when Cincinnati opens a series at St. Louis.
