            • Yelich's 3 homers lift Brewers past Cardinals, 10-7
              April 16, 2019
              By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Christian Yelich hit three homers, including a pair of three-run shots, and drove in a career-high seven runs to power the Milwaukee Brewers past the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7 on Monday night.

Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, hit his first three-run homer to cap a six-run second inning. After St. Louis tied it with three runs in the sixth, Yelich answered in the bottom half with a towering three-run blast to right off Mike Mayers (0-1).

Yelich capped his night with his eighth homer this season, going deep to lead off the eighth. He also lined out in the first and was walked intentionally in the fourth.

Junior Guerra (1-0) worked 1 2/3 innings for the victory. Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth after allowing Marcell Ozuna's sixth home run to open the inning.

              METS 7, PHILLIES 6, 11 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Juan Lagares scored from second base on Michael Conforto's hard grounder in the 11th inning and New York beat Philadelphia.

Lagares led off with an infield single against Pat Neshek (0-1), and Brandon Nimmo walked. Two outs later, Conforto hit a sharp grounder that first baseman Rhys Hoskins couldn't field for an error. The ball trickled to second baseman Cesar Hernandez and Lagares kept running, scoring easily because the throw was way off target.

Luis Avilan (1-0) pitched out of trouble in the 10th, stranding runners on second and third. Edwin Diaz struck out the side for his sixth save in six tries and his 16th in a row, dating to last season with Seattle.

Noah Syndergaard had a rough outing for the Mets, giving up five runs and nine hits in five innings while fanning nine. Phillies ace Aaron Nola allowed five runs in four innings.

              CUBS 7, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Willson Contreras hit his sixth homer, drove in three and reached base four times, and Chicago thawed out to beat Miami.

The temperature in Chicago was 33 when the Cubs' game Sunday against the Angels was snowed out, and it was 84 with the retractable roof open for the first pitch at Marlins Park.

Yu Darvish (1-2) struck out eight in a season-high 5 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs, lowering his ERA to 6.11. Three relievers completed the six-hitter.

Chicago scored three times in the first, and Javier Baez drove in a run with a two-out bloop double in the fifth off Trevor Richards (0-2), who allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

              ORIOLES 8, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) - Dwight Smith Jr. hooked a two-run homer into the first row of seats down the right field line and drove in four, leading Baltimore to victory in Boston's annual Patriots' Day game.

Baltimore salvaged a split of the four-game series. It had lost nine of its previous 11 games and was 4-21 in its last 25 against Boston. Chris Davis also hit a two-run homer - much further into the right field bleachers - and Renato Nunez had three hits with an RBI single.

Dan Straily (1-1) rebounded from a rough debut start with Baltimore, giving up a run on two hits in five innings. He was tagged for five runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings by Oakland last week.

Spot starter Hector Velazquez (0-1) gave up a run in three innings.

              RANGERS 12, ANGELS 7

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo homered and grounded a tiebreaking single to the vacant spot at shortstop against the shift, helping Texas beat Los Angeles in Mike Trout's return after missing three games with a groin injury.

Trout, the designated hitter while the club waits a little longer before putting the two-time AL MVP back in center field, went 0 for 2 with three walks.

Shin-Soo Choo, who had three hits, homered leading off the third for his first of the season. Asdrubal Cabrera matched Gallo for the team lead with his fifth homer , a two-run shot for an 11-4 lead in the sixth.

Reliever Kyle Dowdy (1-0) earned his first major league victory, giving up one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Closer Jose Leclerc got his fourth save. Cam Bedrosian (1-1) allowed five of the seven hitters he faced to reach, starting with Elvis Andrus' leadoff double in the fifth.

              BLUE JAYS 5, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Teoscar Hernandez hit the go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning, giving Toronto a badly needed offensive boost with three hits in a victory over Minnesota.

After Martin Perez finished six innings in his first start for the Twins with only one run allowed and Ryne Harper struck out two batters in a perfect seventh, left-hander Adalberto Mejia was summoned for the eighth with all righties due up for the Blue Jays. Freddy Galvis greeted Mejia with a single, Randal Grichuk doubled for his third hit of the game, and Justin Smoak hit an RBI single. Then Hernandez sent an 0-2 slider from Mejia (0-1) into the second deck for a 5-3 lead.

Sam Gaviglio (1-0) picked up the victory with a scoreless seventh. Joe Biagini pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.

              WHITE SOX 5, ROYALS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Welington Castillo atoned for an error with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Chicago rallied to beat Kansas City.

Castillo's poor throw on Billy Hamilton's steal in the seventh helped set up Whit Merrifield's tiebreaking sacrifice fly. But Castillo came up big after Tim Anderson led off the eighth with a double against Brad Boxberger (0-3), sending an opposite-field drive to right for his first homer of the season.

Manny Banuelos (1-0) pitched three hitless innings for his first win since 2015, and Alex Colome worked the ninth for his fourth save in four chances and No. 100 for his career.

He’s been a tremendous player there for them, but to me, that gives just enough ammo for the fans out there to not really like that and enough for the Seahawks to maybe do what they’ve done, jettisoning some of their other players before they overpay.”

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                  13) You never know about team chemistry, what goes on behind closed doors.

Last week, Marquette G Markus Howard announced he was coming back for his senior year, which was surprising, considering the kid had skipped his senior year of HS to begin college when he was 17 years old. But you figured it was very good news for Marquette.

Yesterday, brothers Sam/Joey Hauser announced they’re in the transfer portal, and will be leaving Marquette, which was really almost shocking news. As Darren MacGavin said in The Natural, “Something is amiss”

You don’t have to be Columbo to come to the conclusion that the Hauser brothers didn’t enjoy playing basketball with Markus Howard.

                  12) Fred Hoiberg is the new coach at Nebraska; in 2011, he quickly upgraded Iowa State’s program by bringing in transfers. Nebraska is the early favorite to land the Hauser brothers.

                  11) In his last two starts, hitters swung at 103 of Jacob deGrom’s pitches:
                  — 24 misses (23.3%)
                  — 52 foul balls (50.5%)
                  — 27 balls in play, with 13 of those hits (.481). Not good.

Last year and in his first two starts this year, hitters swung at 1,725 of deGrom’s pitches:
                  — 504 misses (29.2%),
                  — 645 foul balls (37.4%)
                  — 533 balls in play, with 188 of those hits (.353) Very good.

Something to track moving forward; he’s having trouble putting hitters away.

                  10) The gambler who won $1.19M betting on Eldrick Woods at The Masters? The guy is from Wisconsin; apparently it was the first-ever sports bet.

First sports bet he ever makes and its for $85,000? Wow.

                  9) Non-sports question: Why would someone pay $500,000 so their kid could get into a college? I don’t care if it is USC, Harvard, DeVry University or Ouachita Baptist; whats the point?

If the kid isn’t smart enough to get in the school in the first place, how will they do enough work to get a diploma? Or does the $500K cover that, too? Too many weasels in the world today.

                  8) Rockies 5, Padres 2— Colorado scored a run in 2nd inning for first time this season; they still haven’t scored in the first inning.

Under is 21-5-3 in Colorado’s last 29 road games.

                  7) Baseball injuries:
                  — Rockies put C Chris Iannetta (lat strain) on the IL.
                  — Phillies put P David Robertson (elbow) on the IL.
                  — Angels put P Tyler Skaggs (ankle) on the IL.
                  — Braves put P Jonny Venters (calf) on the IL.

                  6) Clippers 135, Warriors 131- Golden State blew a 31-point lead, may have lost DeMarcus Cousins with a torn quad muscle. Series is even, 1-1.

Sidebar to Clippers-Warriors series is that Doc Rivers’ daughter is engaged to Portland G Seth Curry, who is Steph Curry’s brother.

                  5) Brewers 10, Cardinals 7— In five games vs St Louis this season, Christian Yelich has seven homers, 15 RBI.

                  4) AA Arkansas Travelers didn’t get a hit Sunday, but they beat Tulsa 1-0 in 10 innings.

Starting this year in extra innings in minor league games, innings start with a runner on 2nd base, an incredibly stupid innovation; the run Arkansas scored came in on a bases loaded walk.

I’d rather see tie games than have innings start with a runner on second base.

                  3) Sacramento Kings fired coach Dave Joerger last week; turns out Joerger wanted the Kings to draft Luka Doncic instead of Marvin Bagley Jr. Maybe Joerger should be the Kings’ GM.

                  2) RIP to coach John MacLeod, who passed away over the weekend at age 81.

When I was in college, I wrote several letters to coaches around the country, asking how they used statistics (what is called analytics today) in their coaching. Thats how I put myself thru college, as a student manager of the basketball team— we did some interesting stuff with stats.

MacLeod was one of the few people who took the time to answer me, and I always appreciated that. RIP, sir.

                  1) They ran the Boston Marathon Monday; running 26 miles (and 365 yards) seems excessive to me. Hell, if I drive my car 26 miles I’m looking for a Wendy’s or a McDonald’s. But more power to the people who are way tougher than me. Hope you all had fun.

                          • LEADING OFF: Red Sox-Yankees, Lindor begins rehab assignment
                            April 15, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                            RIVALRY RENEWED

Mookie Betts tries to get going at the plate when the Red Sox (6-11) visit the Yankees (6-9) in the first meeting this season between the longtime rivals. Boston knocked New York out of the playoffs last year on the way to a World Series championship, but both clubs are off to surprisingly slow starts in 2019. Same is true of Betts, who is batting .222. ''Basically, what I'm doing is unacceptable,'' the AL MVP said. ''I have to figure out a way to get something done and help the team.'' Yankees left-hander James Paxton (1-2, 6.00 ERA) gets his first taste of the bitter rivalry when he faces struggling Boston ace Chris Sale (0-3, 9.00) in the opener of a two-game set. Paxton told reporters he thought he was tipping pitches in Houston last Wednesday during an 8-6 loss.

                            LINDOR LIMBERS UP

Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor is set to begin an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus. Lindor is working back from a left ankle injury, which occurred near the end of spring training while he was trying to come back from a right calf strain. Cleveland manager Terry Francona isn't sure how long Lindor will be with Columbus before joining the big league club.

                            TOP OF THE TABLE

Tampa Bay (12-4) takes baseball's best record into its series opener at home against Baltimore. On the mound for the Rays will be Tyler Glasnow, who is 3-0 with a 0.53 ERA. The big right-hander was acquired from Pittsburgh last year in a trade for Chris Archer. Tampa Bay has the lowest ERA in the majors at 2.44 - and the starters are even better at 1.47. In the other dugout, the Orioles hope Chris Davis is about to go on a long-awaited tear. Davis ended his record 0-for-54 slump with three hits and four RBIs on Saturday, then socked his first homer since August on Monday.

                            MISSING PIECE

The Phillies will need to make do for a while without the biggest offseason addition to their bullpen. David Robertson was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday because of a sore right elbow. Right-hander Drew Anderson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Robertson's spot. Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler said Robertson will have an MRI on Tuesday. The right-hander has a 5.40 ERA in seven appearances but hasn't allowed a run in his last four. The Phillies signed him to a $23 million, two-year contact in the offseason.

                              Wild Cards

The St. Louis Cardinals meet the Milwaukee Brewers in a key early season matchup in the National League Central. The Cards enter play with six victories over the past seven outings, and they're a perfect 5-0 in the past five games against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, they're 4-1 in the past five games against a right-handed starting pitcher, while going 17-8 in the past 25 on the road vs. RHP. While all of that is well and good, they're 1-7 in the past eight matchups against the Brewers.

                              Tuesday, April 16

The Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry for a quickie two-game set in the Bronx on Tuesday night. Neither team has gotten off to the kind of start they were hoping for, as the Red Sox enter the week at 6-10, while the Yankees are just 6-9. Boston tries to get LHP Chris Sale on track. They're just 1-4 in his past five starts, and he enters the game with a dismal 0-3 record, 9.00 ERA and .361 OBP by opponents, while managing just eight strikeouts over 13 innings. That's definitely not what we've come to expect from Sale over the years. The Yankees counter with LHP James Paxton, who isn't that much better at 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA and .388 OBP.

Boston heads into this one 9-3 in the past 12 vs. LHP, and they'e 2-7 over the past nine games on the road, too. For the Yankees, they're just 1-4 in their past five home outings, and 1-5 in the past six games overall. They're also just 1-5 in the past six games at home vs. LHP. In the past five meetings, the Red Sox have won four of them, with the 'over' cashing in seven of the past nine games overall. The over is also 5-2 in the past seven tangles in the Bronx, while going 4-0 in Sale's past four against the Yankees.

The Astros and Athletics kick off a set in Oakland with RHP Collin McHugh and RHP Marco Estrada squaring off. Oakland looks to cool off Houston, as they enter on a nine-game winning streak. The Astros have won six in a row against winning teams, and they're 6-0 in the past six against RHP, too. They're also 20-7 in the past 27 games against AL West foes. In addition, the Astros are an impressive 33-6 in the past 39 starts by McHugh against AL West opponents. On the flip side, the A's have dropped each of Estrada's past four outings, and they're 1-4 in the past five starts against AL West foes, and 2-5 in the past seven vs. RHP.

                              Weather Report

The winds will be gusting at 10-13 mph from home plate to Pesky's Pole in right field, so it could be a high-scoring affair. It will be the opposite conditions in Arlington, as the Angels and Rangers will have a strong 15-18 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate. In San Diego, the Rockies and Padres will be battling winds blowing in from left-center field to home plate at an 11-14 mph clip.
