    Friday, April 19

Madison Bumgarner takes the ball on Friday for the series opener against the Pirates in the Steel City. San Francisco is just 1-5 in the past six starts by MadBum, and 0-4 in his past four assignments against NL Central opponents. In addition, they're just 9-23 in his past 32 starts away from home. The Pirates have won four in a row at home, and four of the past five overall. In addition, the Bucs have won 15 of the past 20 games against teams with a losing overall mark. San Francisco has won seven of their past nine trips to Pittsburgh, too.

Justin Verlander makes the start on the road against the Texas Rangers against Drew Smyly in a matchup which looks ultra-favorable on paper. The 'Stros have won seven in a row against teams with a winning overall mark, and they're 4-0 in the past four after an odd day. In addition, Houston has won 21 of the past 29 against AL West foes, and 20 of their past 28 vs. LHP. Houston has also won 20 of Verlander's past 24 starts on the road, and 16 of his past 22 against divisional opponents. The Rangers have won four in a row at home, and they're 5-1 in the past six at Globe Life Park vs. RHP. Houston has also won 18 of their past 23 trips to Arlington, while the under has hit in four of the past five meetings in Texas. Weather Report The Diamondbacks and Cubs will square off in an afternoon battle at Wrigley, and the wind will be blowing in briskly from left field into the face of the batters at a whopping 24-27 mph. That will help 'under' bettors immensely. There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation in Baltimore for the Twins-O's matchup. If the game does get underway, the winds will be blowing out at 17-20 mph to left-center field.

In Pittsburgh, a delay is likely, as the weather forecast calls for a 50 percent or greater chance of rain through 10 p.m., lowering to 30 percent. The Giants and Bucs might have trouble getting underway. There is a 30-40 percent chance of rain for Royals-Yankees, too. If they are able to play, the winds will blow 17-20 mph from right to left. The White Sox-Tigers will deal with 40 or more percent chance of rain, and winds 19-22 mph blowing out to right field. For the Braves-Indians, they'll also faced a steady rain, and it sounds unlikely they'll get the interleague series opener in. In Texas, the Astros and Rangers will deal with winds of 10-13 mph blowing out to the right-center field power alley. Lastly, the Mets and Cardinals will also deal with breezy conditions, blowing 15-18 mph from left field to first base.

    Saturday, April 20

Matt Shoemaker will take the ball for the Blue Jays, and he knows the Athletics well from his days with the Angels. He is 4-1 with a 3.79 ERA across eight starts against the A's since the start of the 2016 season, and they're hitting just .258 against him. Shoemaker is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five outings at Overstock.com Coliseum, and the A's are hitting just .217 against him there with 24 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. If anyone gives him trouble, it would be who you expect. 1B/DH Khris Davis is 6-for-15 (.400) with two doubles and two solo homers, while OF Stephen Piscotty has two homers and seven RBI vs. Shoemaker in just nine at-bats.

The Rays will take their hacks against Red Sox SP Rick Porcello, who enters 0-3 with an 11.12 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. The struggles could continue, as Tampa Bay's current roster is a collective .287 with five doubles, a triple, two homers and 13 RBI across 150 at-bats. However, since the start of the 2016 season he is 9-6 with a 3.71 ERA with 106 strikeouts over 106 2/3 innings across 17 starts vs. Tampa Bay. That includes a 5-3 mark, 2.93 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings in nine starts at Tropicana Field.

Gerrit Cole and the Astros will look to take care of the Rangers in Arlington. You know Houston's dominance vs. Texas, but he is just 1-2 overall this season despite a 3.24 ERA, 36 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP. Since joining the Astros he is 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA in four starts vs. the Rangers, and they're hitting just .180 against him with nine walks and 40 strikeouts across 25 innings.

    Sunday, April 21

Collin McHugh will face the Rangers in the series finale. He is humming along with a 3-1 record, 1.96 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 23 innings in four starts. Since the start of the 2016 season he is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA with 26 strikeouts and just three homers over 27 1/3 innings in four starts and six relief appearances against Texas. He is also 2-1 in three starts and three relief appearances at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, but he has a dismal 5.12 ERA in those appearances. If anyone gives him trouble, it might be Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor. Andrus is 7-for-22 (.318) against him overall, while Odor is 7-for-23 (.304) with a double, a home run and five RBI.

In a replay of the 1995 World Series, the Cleveland Indians host the Atlanta Braves at Progressive Field on Sunday Night Baseball. RHP Shane Bieber will make the start, and he has impressed to date for a team already with an embarrassment of riches in the pitching department. Bieber is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.81 WHIP over his three starts and four appearances across 21 innings with 22 strikeouts. He enters play with three consecutive quality starts. Max Fried is also on a similar roll, posting three straight quality starts heading into play, posting a 2-0 record, 0.92 ERA and 0.86 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and just four walks over 19 2/3 innings. While the Braves entered the series 5-1 in the past six interleague games, the under is 4-1 in their past five interleague road outings vs. RHP. The under is 5-1 in Cleveland's past six interleague home games against teams with a winning record entering the series, too. The under was also 9-2-1 in the previous 12 meetings between Atlanta and Cleveland heading into Friday's series opener.

        • Betts, Moreland homers lead Red Sox to 6-4 win over Rays
          April 20, 2019
          By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland hit back-to-back homers for the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning and the struggling Boston Red Sox beat the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Friday night.

With the game tied at 4, Betts hit a leadoff shot off Diego Castillo (0-2) and Moreland connected three pitches later.

Christian Vazquez also homered and Brandon Workman (1-1) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Red Sox, who are 7-13 and trail the AL East-leading Rays by seven games. Ryan Brasier worked the ninth to pick up his fourth save.

The Rays are the last team in the majors to have consecutive losses this season. Castillo was also the loser in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Baltimore on Thursday night.

After 20 games last season, the eventual World Series champion Red Sox (17-3) were 10 games up on Tampa Bay (7-13).

Daniel Robertson, mired in an 0 for 21 slide, had a two-run double during the sixth.

Betts, hitless in his previous 12 at-bats, doubled in the sixth and scored as the Red Sox grabbed a 4-2 lead when J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single.

Brandon Lowe hit his fifth homer in the last nine games, a solo drive that just cleared the fence at the 322-foot mark down the right-field line in the second before Garcia's third-inning RBI triple as the Rays went up 2-0.

          YANKEES 6, ROYALS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia earned his first win of the season and Brett Gardner hit a two-run homer to help New York beat Kansas City.

Mike Tauchman also went deep and the Yankees got four solid innings from their bullpen to bounce back from a listless performance against the last-place Royals in the series opener.

Sabathia (1-0) did not allow an earned run over five innings, moving to 15-1 in the regular season following a Yankees loss since 2017. He gave up three hits, overcame four walks and finished with five strikeouts to leave him six shy of 3,000 for his career.

Luis Cessa permitted a run on back-to-back doubles by Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon to begin the sixth, but pinned a runner at third base with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle and Zack Britton closed with hitless relief in an intermittent rain.

Gardner gave New York a 2-1 lead in the third with his drive off Jakob Junis (1-2), making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since July 26, when his fastball broke Aaron Judge's wrist. The right-hander dropped to 0-3 in the Bronx.

          CUBS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks struck out a season-high 11 over seven scoreless innings in his first win to lead Chicago over Arizona.

Hendricks (1-3) became the third consecutive Cubs starter to go seven innings without allowing a run after Jose Quintana and Cole Hamels did it in back-to-back shutouts against Miami. The right-hander gave up three hits and two walks after losing his first three starts.

The Cubs went 31 innings without allowing a run, matching their longest streak since July 1976, before Brad Brach gave up an RBI double to Ketel Marte with one out in the ninth.

Kris Bryant drove in two runs with a wind-aided, bases-loaded double in the second. He also singled and scored in a two-run sixth.

Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI triple in the fourth as the Cubs chased a wild Merrill Kelly (1-2). Willson Contreras added two hits, including an RBI single against Matt Koch in the sixth.

The Diamondbacks had won four in a row.

          PIRATES 4, GIANTS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Lyles cruised through six innings before taking a line drive off his pitching hand, Starling Marte and Erik Gonzalez were also pulled following a collision in the field, and short-handed Pittsburgh beat San Francisco.

Lyles (0-2) continued his hot start, striking out six and allowing four hits while dropping his ERA to a major league-best 0.53. He was removed with a bruised right hand after being struck by Joe Panik's line drive in the sixth.

Marte and Gonzalez collided in the eighth. Marte charged from center on a softly hit ball by Yangervis Solarte and slammed into the shortstop Gonzalez. Gonzalez walked off on his own power. Marte was able to stand briefly, but the team insisted he ride in a cart off the field.

Pittsburgh got all of its runs against Madison Bumarner (1-3) in the first inning. Francisco Cervelli had a two-run double, and Pablo Reyes and JB Shuck added RBI singles. Cervelli ended an 0-for-24 skid.

Bumgarner allowed just two more hits over his final five innings. He struck out seven. Felipe Vazquez struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save.

          WHITE SOX 7, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit a mammoth home run in the first inning, and Chicago scored five runs in the seventh inning to break the game open and beat Detroit.

Carlos Rodon (3-2) allowed a run and three hits in six innings for Chicago, which was without manager Rick Renteria and shortstop Tim Anderson, who were serving suspensions for their actions during Wednesday's bench-clearing fracas against Kansas City.

Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire didn't make it to the end of the game either. He was ejected in the fifth inning for having words with plate umpire Todd Tichenor after Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann (0-3) walked in a run to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

Josh Harrison, Grayson Greiner and Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit's three runs. Moncada's drive in the first stood out, traveling 458 feet.

Zimmermann walked four, one shy of his career high, and allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

          MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

MIAMI (AP) -Miami snapped a four-game losing streak by scoring runs on an error, a walk and a hit batsman in a win over Washington.

Miami totaled just six hits and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. But pinch-hitter Martin Prado's bases-loaded walk in the sixth put the Marlins ahead for the first time since Saturday, and they won after being shut out in the past two games.

Caleb Smith (2-0) struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings. He won his second start in a row and lowered his ERA to 2.35.

Three relievers completed a six-hitter. Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his second save, and his first since March 31 as Miami (5-15) won a series opener for the first time.

Anibal Sanchez (0-2) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Washington's Anthony Rendon doubled to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, longest in the majors this year. Teammate Brian Dozier hit his second homer.

          ASTROS 7, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman homered on consecutive pitches in the first inning and Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings in Houston's win over Texas.

George Springer doubled twice and had one of Houston's four doubles in a three-run fifth inning.

Verlander (3-0) limited the Rangers to one run and three hits over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

Danny Santana hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Rangers, whose four-game winning streak had been the longest in the American League. Joey Gallo launched a towering solo homer in the ninth that measured 442 feet.

Drew Smyly (0-2) struck out eight but walked three and allowed four runs while throwing 102 pitches in his 3 2/3 innings.

          DODGERS 5, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Enrique Hernandez lined a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning and Los Angeles extended its winning streak to six games with the win over Milwaukee.

Hernandez's home run, his fifth of the season, came on an 0-2 pitch from Brewers closer Josh Hader (0-1), who surrendered two walks in the inning.

Five Dodgers relievers combined to limit Milwaukee to one run over the final 4 1/3 innings. Pedro Baez (1-1) got the win and Kenley Jensen got the last three outs for his seventh save.

Christian Yelich lofted a 408-foot homer into the second deck in right, his major league-leading 11th of the season.

Eric Thames hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.

          METS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Pete Alonso hit his seventh home run, Robinson Cano added three hits and New York edged St. Louis.

Mets closer Edwin Diaz retired Yadier Molina on a flyball with runners at the corners for the final out.

Lane Thomas hit a two-run homer in his first major league plate appearance. He became the 10th player in St. Louis franchise history to homer in his first career at-bat.

Mets starter Jason Vargas allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Seth Lugo (1-0) took over and got the win despite giving up two runs in two innings. Robert Gsellman escaped a first-and-third, one-out jam in the eighth.

Adam Wainwright (1-2) allowed three earned runs on eight hits and three walks before being lifted in the fourth inning.

          BLUE JAYS 5, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Stroman struck out six and pitched into the ninth, Brandon Drury homered, and Toronto beat Oakland to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Stroman (1-3) allowed six hits and one run with two walks for his first victory of the season despite a 1.99 ERA coming into his fifth start.

Danny Jansen hit a two-run double in the second that put the Blue Jays up for good.

The A's went ahead 1-0 in the first on Matt Chapman's double, then Stroman shut them down.

Oakland starter Aaron Brooks (2-2) allowed five runs on six hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two.

Slugger Khris Davis went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts after receiving a new contract from the A's that adds $33.75 million and runs through 2021.

              — Week 4: Cowboys @ Saints (-.5.5)
              — Week 7: Patriots (-6) @ Jets

              — Week 14: Chiefs @ Patriots (-2.5)
              — Week 15: Colts @ Saints (-3.5)

              Quote of the Day
“They didn’t like the Gary Sanchez thing with the Home Run Derby, but you can’t fix stupid, you know?”
Logan Morrison, back in April 2018, talking about baseball fans in the Bronx. Morrison signed a minor league deal with the Bronx Bombers this week

              Saturday’s quiz

Four of the top five picks in the 1989 NFL Draft are Hall of Famers (Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders); Tony Mandarich was the #2 pick that year, an offensive lineman from Michigan State. Which team drafted Mandarich?

              Friday’s quiz
Al Pacino coached the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday.

              Thursday’s quiz
Miami Marlins have won two World Series; they’ve never won the NL East.

              *************************************

              Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

              13) Oakland Raiders sent their scouts home for the weekend; they’re not expected to be back before the draft next weekend. Supposedly, Raiders’ hierarchy (Gruden) doesn’t trust all his people, but doesn’t know exactly who he doesn’t trust.

Apparently this isn’t all that unusual; Gil Brandt told a story this week from 1987, where they told one scout about this LB they want to draft (they didn’t really want to). Two days later, a writer in Dallas posts this article about how the Cowboys are going to take the LB, which outed the scout as a leaker. He then became an ex-scout.

              12) Other former front office guys have been saying on Twitter this week that the last 8-10 years, teams have been limiting access to a team’s draft board to only the top 3-4 football people.

              11) Blue Jays are calling up top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr; he is expected to make his big league debut on Tuesday against the Giants.

              10) College basketball is getting to the point where any returning player who scored double figures for a low-to-mid major is getting poached by bigger schools. Norfolk State’s leading scorer entered the transfer portal the week; it makes handicapping during the season that much harder. Will the new player fit in? How much does his departure hurt his former team?

Can’t be much fun for guys who coach in low/mid-majors.

              9) Was reading something this week about how they’re using major league baseballs at the AAA level for the first time this year, and home runs have spiked early in the season. Homers in the International League are up 39%; in the Pacific Coast League, 32%.

Same thing hasn’t happened in AA or A ball, so it makes you wonder……

              8) San Antonio Spurs’ Derrick White played three years of D-II ball at Colorado–Colorado Springs, transferred and played his senior year for the Colorado Buffaloes; he had zero D-I scholarship offers out of high school. None.

This year, he played 25.8 mpg for the Spurs, scored 9.9 ppg. He scored 36 points in the Spurs’ Game 3 win over Denver Thursday. Good for him.

              7) Baseball transactions:
              — Red Sox put IF Eduardo Núñez (back) on IL.
              — Padres put OF Manuel Margot on the paternity list, called up Jose Pirela.
              — Mets put Jacob deGrom (elbow) on the IL.

              6) NCAA relaxed some transfer rules for freshmen: Incoming freshmen who enroll in summer school and receive financial aid can transfer and play immediately without a waiver if their coach leaves prior to the first day of fall classes.

This involves situations where a coach gets fired late in the spring or in summer, like couple years ago when Ohio State fired Thad Matta. It does not include football players who are early enrollees.

              5) Not sure what the wisdom of the four outfielder shift is; seems like having four infielders would be a better idea. Lot of the guys you use the four OF shift with, if they hit it in the air to the outfield, it is going over the fence anyway.

              4) Former UNLV coach Marvin Menzies signed on to be an assistant coach for Dan Majerle at Grand Canyon University in the WAC.

              3) Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his elbow Monday, which is bad news for the Mets and worse news for my fantasy team.

I mentioned a few days ago how deGrom had trouble putting hitters away in his last two starts, and this is probably a big reason why.

              2) Draft trivia; Kyler Murray’s father Kevin was the 11th player taken in the 1982 baseball draft, one spot after Bill Ripken (Cal’s brother).

              1) Nick Saban will have hip replacement surgery on Monday; can’t imagine he’d be much fun to have as a patient in the hospital. Good luck to all the nurses……..

                      • LEADING OFF: DeGrom ailing, Swihart's new start, when Vlad?
                        April 19, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        BOUR BLUNDER

Angels slugger Justin Bour looks to improve his baserunning after yet another blunder on the bags. He failed to run out a popup in a tie game in the eighth, and the Mariners alertly let the ball and turned it into an easy, inning-ending double play. Seattle wound up winning 5-3.

''There's no excuse for it. It's terrible,'' Bour said.

Last Saturday at Wrigley Field, Bour singled in the first inning and tried to advance on an overthrow. Bour lumbered toward second, slid in and was called safe. But convinced he was out, he simply left the base and began walking back to the dugout, and was tagged by the Cubs' Javier Baez halfway between second and first.

                        CHECK HIM

Mets ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his right elbow after the NL Cy Young Award said his arm has felt sore. DeGrom is leaving the team in St. Louis to get examined back in New York, and the team is putting him on the injured list.

''We're not sure what it is,'' manager Mickey Callaway said.

The 30-year-old deGrom, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010, began this season with two dominant outings. But he lost his last two starts while allowing a total of nine runs on 13 hits - including five homers - and five walks in nine innings.

DeGrom signed a $137.5 million, five-year contract right before opening day.

                        NEW HOME

Blake Swihart gets a chance to jump-start his career after Boston traded the catcher to Arizona. The 27-year-old was cut by the Red Sox this week after going 6 for 26 in 12 games.

Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen worked in player development and amateur scouting with Boston when Swihart was selected in the first round of the 2011 draft. Swihart became one of the team's top prospects, but his offensive production hasn't matched the hype.

                        NUMBERS GAME

Oakland slugger Khris Davis goes into the game against Toronto with a .247 batting average after an 0-for-4 night. This is familiar territory for Davis - he's finished at exactly .247 in each of the last four seasons.

                        NOT SO FRIENDLY

Zack Greinke has posted a win at every current National League ballpark except one. The Diamondbacks star will try make it a clean sweep when he starts at Wrigley Field. Greinke is 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA in five starts at the Friendly Confines.

Yu Darvish (1-2, 6.11) starts for the Cubs and goes for his second straight victory.

                        HOW SOON?

Still no word on when super prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will make his major league debut for Toronto, but it could be real soon. He is 7 for 17 with two homers, six RBIs and no strikeouts in five games for Triple-A Buffalo.

The son of a Hall of Famer, Vladdy Jr. batted .381 with a combined 50 extra-base hits at four levels in the minors last year.

''I don't know when he's coming, I really don't,'' Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said before his team opened a weekend series at Oakland.

''We have the No. 1 prospect in baseball and it will be pretty cool when he gets here,'' he said.

                          • Judge hurts oblique as Yanks beat Royals
                            April 20, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) All-Star slugger Aaron Judge hurt his left oblique while taking a swing and was expected to head to the injured list as the already banged-up New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 Saturday.

Judge homered early, but hurt himself in the sixth inning while hitting a single. He was taken to a hospital for an MRI and further tests.

Judge winced after taking a swing in the sixth and gingerly made his way to first base. He left the game after being checked by a trainer.

The Yankees, who began the game with 12 players on the injured list, hit four home runs. Judge connected in the first, Clint Frazier had a solo drive in the second and Mike Tauchman and DJ LeMahieu homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth.

Judge and Frazier hit their fifth homers of the season in the opening two innings off Heath Fillmyer (0-1).

Masahiro Tanaka (2-1) pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

Chris Owings homered in the ninth for Kansas City.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich hit two home runs, pushing his major league-leading total to 13, and Chase Anderson pitched five strong innings in a spot start in Milwaukee's win over Los Angeles.

Ryan Braun added a three-run homer for the Brewers, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Brewers, who ended the Dodgers' six-game winning streak, got on the board in the third when Yelich hit a solo homer with two out off Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1). With that homer, Yelich broke the franchise record for home runs in March and April, set by Eric Thames in 2017. His second came in the sixth inning, and his 13 homers in the first month of the season matched the franchise record for homers in a month, set by Prince Fielder in May 2007.

Anderson (2-0) allowed a single to open the game and then retired 15 of the next 17 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter. He walked two batters and struck out five.

Alex Claudio, Junior Guerra and Matt Albers combined to pitch four innings of one-hit relief.

Kluber (2-2) shook off a rough first inning and allowed four runs and five hits. He didn't get out of the third inning in his previous start.

Max Moroff homered and had two RBIs for Cleveland. Greg Allen hit a run-scoring double off starter Julio Teheran (2-2) and the Indians scored six runs in the fifth - all with two outs.

Brian McCann and Matt Joyce hit back-to-back homers off Kluber in the seventh. The Braves, who have lost four in a row, had just six hits.

In the second game, Ronald Acuna Jr.'s two-run double highlighted Atlanta's five-run rally in the ninth inning as the Braves stormed back to gain a split.

The Braves trailed 7-0 after two innings but chipped away late and stopped a four-game losing streak.

Acuna ripped his double to left on the second pitch from Cody Anderson, who was seeking his first big league save. The Braves also got a two-run single by Ozzie Albies and a bases-loaded walk to Freddie Freeman in the inning before Acuna came through after going hitless in his previous six at-bats.

Luke Jackson (2-0) pitched the eighth, and A.J. Minter struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

The Indians welcomed back All-Star Francisco Lindor, who finally made his season debut. Lindor returned after missing 19 games with an ankle injury, and went 1 for 5 with a run scored.

Rick Porcello gave up two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, Matt Barnes (2-0) won after allowing Yandy Diaz's tying home run leading off the eighth, and Ryan Brasier got his fifth save in six

Miguel Rojas and Starlin Castro each had two hits for the Marlins.

                                Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

                                13) Twins-Orioles broadcast Saturday was great; Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven were the analysts and it was educational. Play-by-play guy described the action on the field then got out of the way and let the two experts talk. Good stuff.

Kaat was saying how much harder batters work now before the game, and he referenced Aaron Judge going on the IL Saturday with an oblique strain. It is possible to overtrain.

                                12) Auburn’s Chuma Okeke tore his ACL during the NCAA tournament, but he is entering the NBA Draft anyway, not really sure why. You’d think he’d stay in school, use the school’s facilities to strenghten/rehab his knee, then go into the ’20 draft. We’ll see how this works out for him.

                                11) Advice from Bucky Brooks, former NFL player and scout:

“If you’re a HS football player who isn’t playing baseball in the Spring, you SHOULD run track for your school. Speed is such an important part of being a top-notch football player. Learning how to run and compete on the track carries over onto the field.. Dare to be great..”

                                10) Interesting trivia on this year’s NFL schedule:
                                — NFL’s Senior VP of broadcasting Howard Katz is one of the people who makes the NFL schedule every year.
                                — Philadelphia Eagles are only NFL team that plays three straight weeks on road this year.
                                — Katz and Eagles’ coach Doug Pedersen are next-door neighbors.

Part of the reason the Eagles are on road for three straight weeks in October is that the Phillies are expected to be World Series contenders, and the NFL didn’t want any conflicts between Eagle/Phillies games, seeing how they share parking areas.

                                9) Miami Marlins fired hitting coach Mike Pagliarulo after 20 games; it ain’t his fault Miami has a bad team. Marlins fired hitting coach Frank Menechino after last season; what they need to do is find an owner who is willing to spend money on ballplayers.

Two years ago, Miami’s outfield was Yelich-Ozuna-Stanton, then the team was sold and the new geniuses who are in charge traded the three of them for three piles of crap. No bueno.

                                8) Keldon Johnson scored 13.5 ppg this year as a freshman at Kentucky; he is projected by one draft guru to be picked 17th in June’s NBA Draft.

Johnson was seen in Hollywood this week driving a $300,000 McLaren 720S Spider; until watching a Showtime special a few weeks ago, I had no idea that there were cars that cost so much money. Wish the young man well in his NBA career, but someone might want to teach him money management skills before it is too late.

Last year’s NBA rookie salary scale paid the #17 pick a total of $6,358,500 for his first three years in the league. Taxes eat half of that, agent takes another 3%, so he’s down to $2,988,495 before he starts.

Donte DiVincenzo was the #17 pick LY; he played 15.2 mpg, scored 4.9 ppg, so he’s no lock for a second contract in the league when the time comes. The second contract is the key; thats where guys establish themselves in the NBA. Then they can buy the $300,000 car.

                                7) Baseball injuries:
                                — New York put Aaron Judge (oblique) on IL.
                                — Red Sox put P Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) on IL.
                                — Pirates put 2B Erik Gonzalez (clavicle), CF Starling Marte (abdomen) on IL.
                                — Phillies put SS Jean Segura (hamstring), P Victor Arano (elbow) on IL.

                                6) Former Georgia/Miami football coach Mark Richt will be an analyst on the new ACC Network starting this fall.

                                5) There is a high school football stadium in Jacksonville, TX called the Tomato Bowl.

                                4) On April 12, CG Technology took these two futures bets:
                                — Jaguars for $4,000 at 45-1, to win $180,000
                                — Titans for $2,000 at 85-1, to win $170,000

Long time to let the books hold your money; will odds change that much between now and before the preseason games start this summer?

                                3) Giants have apparently talked about trading for Arizona QB Josh Rosen, but don’t want to give up either one of their first round picks (6th, 17th picks) in this draft.

Rosen was the 2nd player taken in last year’s draft, so if you won’t give up a first round pick for him now, then you really don’t want him.

                                2) From Henry Schulman: Since 1912, the longest a team has gone to start a season without scoring a first-inning run is 28 games. Giants are at 22 games and counting thru Saturday.

                                1) 76ers 112 (-3.5), Nets 108— Philly hit two foul shots with 0:06 left to cover the spread; if you had Brooklyn +3.5, this was a bad beat. Embiid had 31 points, 16 rebounds for Philly.
