    • Cubs rout Pirates 10-0 in home opener after Lester departs
      April 8, 2019
      By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run homer and Chicago's beleaguered bullpen stepped up after Jon Lester departed with left hamstring tightness, leading the Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-0 in their home opener on Monday.

Brad Brach, Brandon Kintzler, Randy Rosario and Pedro Strop combined for seven innings of four-hit ball after Lester was removed with two on and no outs in the third. Brach (1-0) pitched two innings for his first win with the Cubs.

Pittsburgh had won four in a row, but it hurt itself with four errors, including three by shortstop Kevin Newman. Jameson Taillon (0-2) was charged with six unearned runs and four hits in two innings.

      ORIOLES 12, ATHLETICS 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis went 0 for 5 to set a major league record for the longest hitless streak by a position player, extending his drought to 49 consecutive at-bats in Baltimore's rout of Oakland.

Davis hit three flyballs before striking out in the seventh and eighth innings, leaving him 0 for 28 this season and 0 for 49 since hitting a double early in a game Sept. 14. The previous longest drought by a non-pitcher was 46 at-bats, by Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Eugenio Velez.

Jonathan Villar homered and had four RBIs, Trey Mancini went 3 for 3 with a homer, Cedric Mullins hit two triples and drove in three runs and rookie shortstop Richie Martin's first multiple-hit game included a triple and a pair of singles.

Still seeking his first victory with Oakland, Marco Estrada (0-1) gave up six runs in four innings.

Andrew Cashner (2-1) allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to help Baltimore snap a four-game losing streak.

      ASTROS 4, YANKEES 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve hit a long home run and Carlos Correa's broken-bat RBI infield single in the eighth inning helped Houston rally past New York for its fourth straight victory.

Aaron Judge homered off Astros ace Justin Verlander as New York built a 3-1 lead in a matchup between AL powerhouses. Robinson Chirinos tied it with a two-run double in the seventh against Zack Britton.

The game was tied with one out in the eighth when Adam Ottavino (1-1) walked Alex Bregman before a single by Michael Brantley sent Bregman to third. Correa then shattered his bat on a grounder that dribbled down the first base line, allowing Bregman to score.

Ryan Pressly (1-0) extended his scoreless streak to 22 1/3 innings with a perfect eighth to get the win and Roberto Osuna pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

      PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit two solo homers, Odubel Herrera hit a two-run shot and Philadelphia beat Washington.

Kurt Suzuki and Brian Dozier went deep for the Nationals.

Bryce Harper was 0 for 3 with a walk in his third game against his former team but helped prevent a run with a perfect relay throw.

Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez allowed two runs and four hits in five innings in his first start this season. Seranthony Dominguez (1-0) tossed a perfect sixth. Pat Neshek pitched out of trouble in the ninth for his first save.

Anibal Sanchez (0-1) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second start against Philadelphia in five days.

      MARINERS 13, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion homered twice during an eight-run sixth inning, two of five homers for hot-hitting Seattle against Kansas City.

Daniel Vogelbach, Jay Bruce and Dylan Moore also connected for the Mariners. They have scored five or more runs in 11 of their first 12 games and have 32 homers in that span, the most by one team a dozen games into a season.

Encarnacion became the first Mariners player to go deep twice in an inning since Bret Boone and Mike Cameron both did it May 2, 2002, against the White Sox. Cameron tied a major league record with four homers in that game. The last player with a multihomer inning was Mark Trumbo of the Angels on April 15, 2016, at Texas.

It's the second time in his career Encarnacion has homered twice in one inning. He also accomplished the feat in July 2013 with Toronto. He's the fifth player to homer twice in an inning more than once, joining Alex Rodriguez, Jeff King, Andre Dawson and Willie McCovey, per STATS.

The Mariners improved to 10-2, the first team in the majors with double-digit victories.

Roenis Elias (1-0) pitched three hitless innings in relief, helping Seattle cover when Felix Hernandez left after one inning with an illness.

Homer Bailey (0-1) allowed seven runs in five-plus innings.

Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 29 games dating to last season. Merrifield's streak is one shy of George Brett's club record for the Royals.

      CARDINALS 4, DODGERS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Marcell Ozuna homered to back a solid start by Miles Mikolas, and St. Louis ended Los Angeles' five-game winning streak.

Mikolas (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings, working around three hit batters in the first five innings. He had never hit more than one batter in a game.

For the Dodgers, the loss could be painful because of another groin injury to starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, who left with two outs in the second inning.

St. Louis rallied with two runs in the seventh. Jose Martinez singled off Joe Kelly (1-2) to drive in Matt Carpenter, who had singled off Scott Alexander. Paul Goldschmidt later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Kelly.

John Gant worked two scoreless innings in relief and Jordan Hicks pitched the ninth for his second save.

      BRAVES 8, ROCKIES 6

DENVER (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. homered, Dansby Swanson drove in three runs and Atlanta held off Colorado for its first road win of the season.

Nick Markakis added three hits and two RBIs for the Braves, swept in their season-opening trip to Philadelphia.

Julio Teheran (1-1) allowed six runs and five hits - all in the fifth inning - but benefited from a Braves bullpen that delivered four scoreless frames. A.J. Minter got three outs for his first save.

Pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds and Trevor Story homered for the Rockies, who have lost eight of nine.

Kyle Freeland (1-2) gave up seven runs and seven hits in five innings for his first loss at Coors Field since June 10 against Arizona.

Teheran was staked to a 7-0 lead and held the Rockies hitless until Josh Fuentes singled to start the fifth.

      RAYS 5, WHITE SOX 1

Blake Snell (2-1) struck out 11 over six innings, giving up one run and six hits as Tampa Bay improved to 8-3 and kept pace with its best start since 2010.

Avisail Garcia had two hits, including an RBI single in the second that made it 4-0. He also struck out three times against his former team. Tommy Pham scored two runs and extended his club-record on-base streak to 43 games. Hunter Wood, recalled from Triple-A Durham, threw three scoreless for his first big league save.

Carlos Rodon (1-2) gave up four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

      ANGELS 5, BREWERS 2

      PADRES 6, GIANTS 5

          Quote of the Day
“I think in the last five years, not counting this year, there’s been 380 or thereabouts go out early for the draft, and 25 percent of those guys didn’t even get drafted. And another 25 percent weren’t on the team in three years. So, that means 50 percent of the guys that went out early for the draft had failed grades. “But if you look at the number of guys that were first- and second-round draft picks, there were very few guys that had failed careers. Now, we have guys that have no draft grades, seventh-round grades, free-agent grades, fifth-round grades that are going out of the draft. And the person that loses in that is the player.”
          Nick Saban

          Tuesday’s quiz
Before Monday night, when was last time the national title game went to overtime?

          Monday’s quiz
Nick Saban was head coach at Michigan State before LSU, the Dolphins and Alabama; his QB in East Lansing was Tony Banks.

          Sunday’s quiz
DePaul coach Dave Leitao was the coach at Virginia before Tony Bennett.

          *************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

          13) Virginia 85, Texas Tech 77 OT— Random thoughts on this game:
          — Game went over the total by 44 points.
          — Virginia made 11-24 on arc; teams has been shooting under 30% on arc vs Texas Tech.
          — Virginia’s last three wins: two OT games, third win by one point.
          — Cavaliers’ two Final Four opponents both had a starter get hurt just before they played Virginia.
          — Last year, Virginia was the first #1-seed to lose in the first round; they took a ton of grief for that. The value of sports is learning from adversity, keeping your head up and doing better the next time. Tony Bennett showed tremendous class; hope he enjoys this a lot.

          12) From 2014-17, eight baseball teams finished 10+ games above .500 in one-run games; those eight teams, the next season, went a combined 169-178 in one-run games. Very tough to replicate success in close games two years in a row.

          11) Exception to the rule; Seattle Mariners went 26-15 in one-run games two years ago, then went 36-21 LY. So the Mariners went 62-36 in one-run games for two years but didn’t make the playoffs either year, then they did almost a total rebuild this past winter. Unusual.

          10) Must be noted that in 2015, the Cubs went 34-21 in one-run games, then only 22-23 the next year, but that next year was when they won the World Series- they were 66-25 in games decided by 3+ runs.

          9) In 2016, Texas Rangers went 95-67 and made the playoffs; they were an amazing 36-11 in one-run games. Since then, Texas went 78-84 in 2017, then 67-95 in ‘18, fired their manager last winter after going 25-43 in one-run games. Success is difficult to sustain.

          8) Over the last five years, the Reds are 85-145 in one-run games, winning 68 or fewer games each of the last four seasons.

          7) Last three years, Minnesota is 45-68 in one-run games, even though they jumped from 57 to 85 wins in 2017- they were 15-18 in one-run games that season.

          6) Mariners 12, Royals 4— Whit Merrfield has a 29-game hitting streak; he’s gotten a hit in his first AB in nine of those 29 games.

Daniel Vogelbach has homered in four straight games for Seattle. Felix Hernandez left the game in the 2nd inning with “flu-like symptoms”

          5) Louisville basketball coach Chris Mack posted a picture of himself on Twitter Monday; he is in the hospital this week, getting a knee replaced. Must be a dead period for recruiting.

          4) Cubs 10, Pirates 0— Good news for the Cubs; they scored six runs in the second inning and jogged to a win in their home opener.

Bad news for the Cubs; Jon Lester left in the 3rd inning with a hamstring injury.

          3) Underrated baseball record: Ted Williams reached base safely in 84 consecutive games, which is the all-time record. Tampa Bay’s Tommy Pham has now reached base 43 games in a row, so he’s more than halfway to the record.

          2) Jon Rothstein of CBS is reporting that Chris Mullin will step down as coach at St John’s this week. Apparently they’re going after Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley, who is from New Jersey, but he could be in line to replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke when that time comes.

If I ran St John’s, we’d give Bruce Pearl a call. Think he would be big in New York City, but not sure where he stands with the NCAA.

          1) Thought this was a poor season of college basketball; quality of play is down, the most talented players are mostly 18 years old,. Kids either jump to pro ball or transfer to a bigger name school every time they make two layups in a row. Far less continuity in teams from year to year now, which decreases the quality of play.

MLB Betting Preview – Yankees at Astros

The New York Yankees and Houston Astros got off to slow starts to the season, but each team got well in their last series, as the Yankees swept the Orioles, while the Astros swept the A’s. This will be the second game of this series, as the teams played on Monday night. The probable pitching matchup for Tuesday night in this game that can be seen on ESPN has Jonathan Loaisiga going against Gerrit Cole. Let’s look at the contest and MLB picks.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros
Date and Time: Tuesday, April 9, 2019, 8:10 p.m. Eastern
Location: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
MLB Odds at BetDSI: Astros -176, O/U 8
                      Probable Pitchers: Loaisiga vs. Cole
Yankees vs. Astros TV Coverage: ESPN

The Yankees were a good road team a year ago, as they went 47-34, while Houston was solid at home at 46-35. The Yankees won the season series a year ago between the teams, winning five of the seven matchups. New York was 3-0 in their first three road games with all three games going over the total. The Yankees are averaging 5.4 runs per game and giving up 2.9 per contest.

The Astros were 3-0 in their first three home games, with one game going over and two going under. They are averaging 3.3 runs per game and giving up just over 3 runs per contest.

                      Starting Pitchers

The Yankees have a rookie pitcher in Jonathan Loaisiga and he looked good in his first start, as he gave up one run and one hit in four innings against Detroit. New York pulled him after 70 pitches.

Gerrit Cole has lost both of his starts for Houston even though he has pitched pretty well. He struck out nine batters and allowed three runs in six innings against Texas last time out. Cole has struck out 19 batters and walked just three in his 12 innings this season.

                      Key Stats

The Yankees were 5-1 in the last 6 meetings before this series began, but most of that success was at home, as they are 3-7 in their last ten in Houston. The Yankees are 5-1 in their last 6 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Yankees are 12-4 in their last 16 vs. the American League West. The Astros are 16-6 in their last 22 home games. The Astros are 52-21 in their last 73 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Astros are 1-7 in their last 8 vs. the American League East. The Astros are 13-3 in Cole’s last 16 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Over is 8-0 in the Yankees last 8 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 10-1 in the Yankees last 11 road games. The Under is 9-2 in the Astros last 11 overall. The Under is 5-2 in the Astros last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 4-1 in Cole’s last 5 starts overall. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Houston.

                      Yankees vs. Astros Picks

The Yankees definitely got well against the Orioles, but New York still has some concerns, as they are missing a lot of injured players. New York is without Giancarlo Stanton, Troy Tulowitzki, Miguel Andujar, Aaron Hicks, Jacoby Ellsbury, Didi Gregorius, Luis Severino and Dellin Betances. The Yankees were able to get past a bad Baltimore team, but it won’t be easy against a good Houston team.

The Astros are a solid home team and Houston has been winning on a regular basis at home with Cole on the mound. We’ll go with Houston in this contest.

The total is also worth playing, as the Yankees have been going over the total on the road, with 10 of their last 11 going over the total. The Yankees are going with a rookie pitcher who likely won’t go more than five innings so the New York bullpen will get a lot of work. Cole has been solid, but New York should still be able to score some runs. We’ll also play the game to go over the total of 8 at BetDSI.

                      • LEADING OFF: Red Sox get rings, Puig gets new nickname
                        April 8, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        BOSTON BASH

The Red Sox are set to receive their 2018 World Series rings ahead of their home opener at Fenway Park. Boston plans to unveil a championship banner, and ceremonies will include a flyover by four F-16 jets prior to the first pitch. The club will sport gold-trimmed hats and jerseys, as well. One member of last year's team who won't attend is Craig Kimbrel. The All-Star closer and current free agent declined an invitation.

The 2019 season hasn't been quite so sparkling. Boston returns from a season-opening West Coast swing 3-8, and the starting pitching has been especially suspect. Chris Sale (0-2, 8.00 ERA) faces Toronto in the home opener. His fastball has averaged 90.7 mph over his first two outings, down from 95.4 mph last season.

                        EL GUERRERO ROJO

The Reds have lost eight straight since an opening day victory, a skid they'll try to end against the Marlins. Cincinnati went 30 innings between runs during one stretch, though the offense has scored 10 times over the past two games. The team has still shown some fight - or at least Yasiel Puig did during a bench-clearing fracas with Pittsburgh on Sunday. Images of Puig trying to take on the entire Pirates team - on a day when Pittsburgh wore its bright yellow throwback uniforms - went viral immediately, and fans are already printing them on T-shirts featuring a new nickname for the Cuban slugger - ''El Guerrero Rojo,'' or The Red Warrior.

                        DEGROMINATOR

Jacob deGrom (2-0, 0.00 ERA) is back on the mound for the first time since striking out a career-best 14 against Miami last week. His Mets take on Minnesota at Citi Field. The NL Cy Young Award winner has 24 strikeouts over 13 innings this season, extending the NL's longest active scoreless streak to 26 innings and his record stretch of starts allowing less than four runs to 31. He also hit a homer against the Marlins.

                        SEVY'S SHOULDER

While the Yankees play in Houston, ace Luis Severino is back in New York for more tests on his injured right shoulder. Manager Aaron Boone says Severino isn't where he wants to be and the team wants an examination to determine why he isn't progressing as expected. Severino was supposed to start on opening day but has been out since he was scratched with right shoulder inflammation from what would have been his first spring training appearance on March 5.

                        PITCHING IN

The Tigers take a five-game winning streak into a series with Cleveland, the AL Central favorite. Detroit's pitching has been excellent, with its starters posting a 2.02 ERA through 10 games. Veteran right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.66 ERA) gets the ball against Indians ace Corey Kluber (0-2, 5.23) having allowed just eight baserunners in 13 2/3 innings over two starts. Zimmermann pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning against the Yankees last time out. Cleveland has won four straight, but its offense entered Monday ranked 26th in the majors with 30 runs and 29th with a .535 OPS.

                        ERVIN BACK EARNIN'

Ervin Santana is set to make his first start with the White Sox after signing a minor league deal in February. The 36-year-old right-hander made just five starts last year due to complications following offseason hand surgery. He was excellent for Minnesota the two seasons prior to that, and Chicago hopes he can be a stabilizing influence on a rotation featuring young pitchers Carlos Rodon, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito. Charlie Morton (1-0, 1.64) is the scheduled starter for Tampa Bay.

                          • Sale struggles as Red Sox drop home opener against Blue Jays
                            April 9, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Chris Sale let a Toronto runner steal home, Mookie Betts fanned with two on for the final out and the champion Boston Red Sox stumbled again, losing to the Blue Jays 7-5 Tuesday in their home opener.

After receiving their World Series rings during a ceremony that included the Super Bowl champ New England Patriots, the Red Sox fell to 3-9. A return to Fenway Park failed to shake the doldrums that plagued Boston during a season-opening trip to Seattle, Oakland and Arizona.

Red Sox sparkplug Dustin Pedroia went 1 for 4 in his first major league game since May. He played only three times last year while slowed by a knee injury.

The game also made history: It was the first big league matchup of managers born in Puerto Rico, with Toronto's Charlie Montoyo topping Boston's Alex Cora.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. stole home and had an RBI single as Toronto ended a four-game losing streak. Freddy Galvis drove in two runs to back Matt Shoemaker (3-0), who allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Sale (0-3) surrendered five runs and seven hits before being pulled after four innings.

                            NATIONALS 10, PHILLIES 6, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Juan Soto hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning, and Washington rallied for the win.

Philadelphia's Bryce Harper crushed a three-run homer off former teammate Stephen Strasburg, but Victor Robles tied it at 6 on a solo shot off Edubray Ramos with two outs and two strikes in the ninth.

Ramos hadn't pitched in six days and has one career save but Phillies manager Gabe Kapler brought him in to protect a one-run lead.

Brian Dozier and Anthony Rendon hit consecutive singles off Jose Alvarez (0-1) to start the 10th and Soto followed with a towering shot over the right field foul pole. A video review upheld the fair call. Robles added an RBI double in the inning.

Sean Doolittle (3-0) got five outs for the win.

                            TWINS 14, METS 8

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom's record-tying streak of quality starts ended at 26 when he allowed two home runs to Mitch Garver and one to Eddie Rosario in a drubbing by the Twins.

Minnesota had six homers, including a pair by Jonathan Schoop. The Mets hit four of their own, two by rookie Pete Alonso, as the teams combined for the most home runs in a game at Citi Field, which opened a decade ago.

DeGrom (2-1) gave up three homers and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the fourth inning after allowing six runs and eight hits.

Kyle Gibson was in position to win but was removed after 4 2/3 innings for the second straight start. He loaded the bases with a pair of two-out walks, and Trevor Hildenberger (2-0) retired Jeff McNeil on a flyout.

                            CARDINALS 4, DODGERS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Yadier Molina drove in three runs, Paul Goldschmidt homered and the Cardinals beat the Dodgers despite an embarrassing play by Marcell Ozuna.

St. Louis already had a 4-0 lead when Kike Hernandez led off the eighth with a drive to left. Ozuna went back and climbed up the wall, but he misjudged the ball and tumbled onto the warning track as he tried to make the play. Hernandez's drive bounced over for a ground-rule double, but Mike Mayers and Andrew Miller managed to escape the threat.

Six St. Louis pitchers combined for a seven-hitter. The Dodgers stranded 13 runners and struck out 10 times.

John Brebbia (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win.

Los Angeles dropped consecutive games for the first time this season. Ross Stripling (0-1) got the loss.

                            ASTROS 6, YANKEES 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve hit his 100th homer and George Springer's two-run double in the eighth inning helped the Astros to their third straight comeback win.

Houston has won five in a row overall to improve to 7-5.

The Astros trailed by one when Alex Bregman doubled off Jonathan Holder with two out in the seventh inning and scored on a double by Michael Brantley that tied it at 3. Chad Green (0-2) retired Carlos Correa to end the inning.

But the Astros, who rallied to beat Oakland on Sunday and New York in Monday's series opener, got another clutch hit from Springer in the eighth.

Hector Rondon (1-0) got the win and Roberto Osuna fanned one in a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

                            MARINERS 6, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Dee Gordon got three hits and drove in two runs as high-scoring Seattle extended baseball's best record.

The Mariners improved to 11-2 and have scored at least five runs in 12 of those games. The Royals lost their eighth in a row.

Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 30 games, tying a Royals record set by George Brett in 1980. He led off the bottom of the first with an opposite-field triple to stretch a streak that began last Sept. 10 and included the final 20 games of the season.

Marco Gonzales (4-0) gave up two earned runs in six-plus innings. Anthony Swarzak pitched the ninth for his second save in two opportunities.

Kansas City's Jakob Junis (1-1) allowed four runs in four innings.

                            INDIANS 8, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Corey Kluber earned his first win of the season in his third start, powered by four Cleveland home runs.

The Indians won their fifth straight game. Detroit had won five in a row.

Kluber (1-2) allowed one earned run over six innings. A two-time Cy Young Award winner who went 20-7 last season, he struck out eight.

Leonys Martin, Brad Miller, Roberto Perez and Jake Bauers all entered with sub-.200 batting averages before hitting their first homers of the season. Cleveland had hit a total of only four home runs this year before connecting at Comerica Park.

Detroit's Jordan Zimmermann (0-1) gave up five runs and was chased in the fifth inning.

                            BRAVES 7, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) - Dansby Swanson and Ronald Acuna Jr. homered, leading Max Fried and the Braves to the victory.

Fried (2-0) allowed an unearned run and five hits in six innings.

Colorado has dropped its first five home games. It has lost nine of 10 overall since winning the first two games of the season.

Rockies right-hander German Marquez (1-1) was charged with five runs and seven hits in five innings.

                            GIANTS 7, PADRES 2

The Giants set a season high for runs, one night after blowing a five-run lead with ace Madison Bumgarner on the mound.

San Francisco left-hander Derek Holland (1-1) struck out nine in seven crisp innings.

Hunter Renfroe homered for San Diego, and Manny Machado walked twice. Joey Lucchesi (2-1) was tagged for seven runs in four innings.

                            REDS 14, MARLINS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Matt Kemp started Cincinnati's spree of three consecutive homers, and the Reds stopped their eight-game losing streak after their manager and an outfielder were suspended.

The Reds hit five homers in all as they won for the first time since opening day.

The Reds were missing outfielder Yasiel Puig and manager David Bell, suspended for their part in a fracas in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Puig decided to serve his two-game suspension rather than appeal. Bell got a one-game punishment, and bench coach Freddie Benavides took his place for the series opener.

Cincinnati's Luis Castillo (1-1) struck out eight in seven innings.

Miami right-hander Jose Urena allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings.

                            ATHLETICS 13, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jurickson Profar got four hits and drove in a career-high five runs, helping Oakland stop a four-game slide.

Slumping Orioles slugger Chris Davis didn't play, a day after he set the major league record for the longest hitless streak by a position player at 0 for 49.

Profar and Marcus Semien homered as the A's won on the road for the first time in five tries this season. Center fielder Ramon Laureano threw out another runner, and Brett Anderson (3-0) won his third straight start.

Trey Mancini singled in the first and has reached safely in all 11 games for the Orioles, who have dropped five of their last six. John Means (1-1) got the loss.

                            DIAMONDBACKS 5, RANGERS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Jarrod Dyson connected for a two-run homer in the ninth inning, lifting the Diamondbacks to the win.

Dyson, batting for John Ryan Murphy with Eduardo Escobar on second base, drove a 2-2 pitch from Jose Leclerc into the seats in right field. Arizona rallied from a 4-0 deficit after two innings for its third win in four games.

Matt Andriese (2-0) pitched two innings of scoreless ball in relief of Zack Greinke. Murphy and Nick Ahmed hit solo home runs for the Diamondbacks.

Down 4-2 in the ninth, the Diamondbacks' Christian Walker led off with a single against Leclerc (1-1), who blew a save chance for the first time this season. Escobar doubled in Walker and Ahmed struck out before Dyson went deep.

                            RAYS 10, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Austin Meadows homered and set a career high with four hits, powering Tampa Bay to the win.

The Rays pounded Ervin Santana (0-1) and improved to 9-3, their best start in nine years. They also extended a club record by clinching their fourth straight series victory to start a season.

Avisail Garcia smacked a solo homer in the second and finished with three hits, giving him five in the past two games. The White Sox opted not to offer him a contract in the offseason, parting ways after 5+ years, and he signed with Tampa Bay.

Charlie Morton (2-0) went five innings for the win, allowing two runs and three hits.

Yoan Moncada hit a two-run homer for the White Sox. Tim Anderson had two hits, including an RBI single in a three-run eighth.

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                              13) Magic Johnson abruptly stepped down Tuesday night as president of the Lakers.

NBA continues to get stranger by the day. Doesn’t seem like there are a lot of happy people there. League is profitable, lot of folks getting rich. You’d think they’d be happier.

                              12) UCLA ended its 100-day coaching search by hiring Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin, who will get $24M for six years. Cronin made the NCAA’s the last nine years with the Bearcats, but made Sweet 16 only one time, and has never been in an Elite 8.

Cronin was at Cincinnati for 13 years; his record in NCAA games there? 6-9. They got turned down by Rick Barnes and Jamie Dixon, neither of whom will get confused with John Wooden. I’m guessing the fanbase won’t be thrilled.

                              11) On the other hand, where does Cincinnati turn now? They just upgraded their facilities, and have a pretty impressive history of winning. AAC is an improving league; this is a good job for somebody. Question is whats the better open job, Cincinnati or St John’s?

                              10) Avery Johnson, Chris Mullin, Mike Dunleavy all coached in the NBA, all got told to take a hike this spring by colleges that employed them. Recruiting is a grind, and no one wins without really good players. Guys who worked in the NBA aren’t always thrilled by the seemingly endless treadmill that recruiting can be.

                              9) When they announced the 2019 inductees for the Naismith Hall of Fame this weekend, part of me was surprised that Zion Williamson wasn’t inducted; if you listen to ESPN, he’s the greatest college ballplayer since Bill Walton. ESPN”s #1 goal is promoting the NBA, and thats where Williamson will be for the next 12-15 years.

                              8) One thing you never want to see, Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore posting a map of your hometown on Twitter, with the accompanying radar of an approaching storm. Not good.

                              7) Pirates’ P Chris Archer got suspended for five games after starting Sunday’s fracas with the Reds, but he didn’t get thrown out of that game after he threw behind Derek Dietrich.

                              6) Baseball injuries:
                              — Cleveland put P Mike Clevinger (back) on the IL.
                              — Cubs put P Jon Lester (hamstring) on the IL.
                              — Colorado put P Tyler Anderson (knee) on the IL.
                              — Dodgers put Hyun-Jin Ryu (leg) on the IL.
                              — Luis Severino went back to New York for another MRI on his shoulder.

                              5) Cincinnati Reds/St Louis Cardinals are playing two games in Monterrey, Mexico this weekend, bit of an unusual schedule.

                              4) Virginia won its six NCAA tournament games by a total of 45 points, 2nd-lowest total for a champion in the shot clock era. 1997 Arizona Wildcats won their six games by total of 32 points. ’97 UConn Huskies won their six games by total of 47.

                              3) From 2015-17, 18 baseball teams won 10+ more games than they did the year before; those 18 teams, in the third year, regressed by an average of 4.89 wins per year.

There are five such teams this year: Braves, Brewers, A’s, Phillies, Rays.

                              2) TV ratings for Monday night’s Virginia-Texas Tech game were 23% higher than last year’s national title game.

                              1) Since 1989, the Big 14 has won only one national title in basketball, when Michigan State won the championship in 2000 in Indianapolis.

                              • LEADING OFF: Merrifield on Royal run, Harper vs Nats again
                                April 9, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                                THE BIG 3-0

Whit Merrifield can set a record for the longest hitting streak in Royals history. He extended his streak to 30 games Tuesday night, tying the team mark set by George Brett in 1980. Merrifield's string started last season and he's hit safely in all 10 Kansas City games this year. The Royals will face rookie Yusei Kikuchi and the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium.

                                OUT OF CONTROL

Yu Darvish tries again to find the strike zone after two shaky starts for the Cubs. The four-time All-Star has walked 11 over 6 2/3 innings so far, with an 8.10 ERA. Darvish was hurt for most of last season, his first with Chicago after signing a $126 million, six-year deal. He next faces Pittsburgh at Wrigley Field.

                                YOU AGAIN

Bryce Harper takes another swing at his former team when the Philadelphia Phillies host Washington. Harper hit a three-run homer Tuesday night off ex-teammate Stephen Strasburg, but the Nationals rallied from a five-run deficit to win 10-6 in 10 innings. Harper, who spent his first seven seasons in Washington before signing a $330 million, 13-year contract with the Phillies, also homered in his first game against his old club last week.

                                SPOTLESS

Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer (1-0, 0.64 ERA) pitches in Detroit, looking to extend his dominant start to the season. Bauer was pulled after seven hitless innings last Friday against Toronto and has yielded only one hit over 14 innings. Matthew Boyd (0-1, 3.18) and the Tigers try to halt the Indians' five-game winning streak. The lefty struck out a career-high 13 in his last outing April 3 at Yankee Stadium.

                                NOT A NIFTY FIFTY

Slumping Orioles slugger Chris Davis might get a chance to end his record hitless streak. The lefty hitter didn't play Tuesday night when the A's started a left-hander against Baltimore. Davis extended his drought to 0 for 49 this week, the longest rut by a position player ever in the majors. The former home run champion will see if he plays when Oakland starts right-hander Frankie Montas at Camden Yards.
