Bauer pulled with no-hitter thru 7, Indians beat Blue Jays
      April 4, 2019
      By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) Trevor Bauer was pulled by manager Terry Francona after seven hitless innings and 117 pitches, and watched from the dugout as Toronto's Freddy Galvis broke up Cleveland's bid for a combined no-hitter with a leadoff single in the ninth inning of the Indians' 4-1 win Thursday night.

Bauer was attempting to throw Cleveland's first no-hitter in 38 years - on the 25th anniversary of Progressive Field's opening - but was taken out as his pitch count increased.

''It was the right decision,'' Bauer said.

Jon Edwards got two outs in the eighth before closer Brad Hand worked out of a bases-loaded jam. Hand, however, gave up a hard single to center by Galvis. Alen Hansen followed with Toronto's second hit and the Blue Jays scored before Hand struck out two for his third save.

Bauer (1-0) walked six and struck out eight. The Indians haven't pitched a no-hitter since Len Barker's perfect game against Toronto in 1981.

Aaron Sanchez (1-1) took the loss. This was the third time this season the Blue Jays were held hitless into the seventh inning.

      ATHLETICS 7, RED SOX 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Center fielder Ramon Laureano threw out another Red Sox runner in a key spot, and the Oakland Athletics kept Boston stumbling.

Laureano tossed out three runners as the A's took three of four in the series. Stephen Piscotty went 4 for 4 with a home run, double and five RBIs to help Oakland win for the fifth time in six games.

The Red Sox fell to 2-6, the worst start for a defending World Series champion since the stripped-down Marlins struggled in 1998. J.D. Martinez homered for Boston.

Brett Anderson (2-0) gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Piscotty hit a three-run homer off Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2).

      BRAVES 9, CUBS 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Max Fried took a perfect game into the sixth inning, Nick Markakis drive in five runs with five hits that included three doubles and the Atlanta Braves beat Yu Darvish and the Cubs for a three-game sweep.

Chicago has lost five straight and is 1-5 for the first time since 2012, when it lost 101 games.

Fried (1-0), making only his 10th career start and his first this season after two scoreless relief appearances, recorded 17 straight outs to open the game. Mark Zagunis singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth.

The three-run double by Markakis was the big hit in Atlanta's five-run fifth inning that knocked Darvish (0-1) out of the game. Markakis matched his career high for hits and doubles.

      NATIONALS 4, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Stephen Strasburg outpitched Noah Syndergaard, rookie Victor Robles homered for Washington's only hit until the ninth inning and the Nationals blanked the drowsy Mets to spoil New York's home opener.

Wilmer Difo drove in two runs, and Washington's struggling bullpen shined after Strasburg (1-0) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings. Matched against Syndergaard (0-1) for the second time in six days, Strasburg took a one-hitter into the seventh.

Following a 5-1 trip to start the season, the Mets got back to New York after 2 a.m. in the wake of a 6-4 victory in Miami. About 11 hours later, they were on the field again - and their offense looked a little sleepy.

      YANKEES 8, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gleyber Torres homered twice, had a career-high four hits and drove in four runs, and the New York Yankees ruined Baltimore's home opener.

Gary Sanchez and Luke Voit also homered for the Yankees, who beat Baltimore in their own season opener last week.

Torres' first home run of the season got New York within 3-1 in the third inning, and his three-run drive in the sixth off reliever Mike Wright (0-1) put the Yankees up 5-4. Torres also doubled.

James Paxton (1-1) struck out nine and allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings to win his first game with New York being traded from Seattle in November.

      PIRATES 2, REDS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Lyles pitched five effective innings in his Pittsburgh debut and the Pirates extended Cincinnati's scoreless streak.

A day after the Reds got three hits in a 1-0 loss to Milwaukee, they managed six hits against four Pittsburgh pitchers.

Lyles, who played for San Diego and Milwaukee last year, allowed three hits. He was activated from the injured list before the game after being out with discomfort on his right side.

Nick Kingham (1-0) pitched two innings. Felipe Vazquez escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth to earn his first save of the season by striking out three.

Reds starter Tyler Mahle threw six scoreless innings in his season debut. David Hernandez (0-1) took the loss.

      TIGERS 5, ROYALS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Spencer Turnbull struck out 10 in six innings, and the Detroit Tigers drew four straight walks to start the bottom of the seventh, taking the lead for good against Kansas City.

Josh Harrison stole two bases and scored three times for the Tigers in their home opener. It was tied at 3 in the seventh when Kansas City reliever Kyle Zimmer (0-1) walked Harrison, Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera in succession. Kevin McCarthy then came on and walked Niko Goodrum on four pitches, forcing in a run.

Christin Stewart added a sacrifice fly that inning to make it 5-3. Blaine Hardy (1-0) allowed a solo homer to Alex Gordon in the eighth, his second inning of work. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Whit Merrifield singled, tripled and scored twice for the Royals, extending his hitting streak to 26 games dating to last season.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

          13) Interesting article Thursday on bleacherreport.com about Aaron Rodgers and how his relationship with coach Mike McCarthy disintegrated over the years. If you’re a Packer fan, it has to be disturbing. As a football fan, not sure what word I’ll use to describe it.

“Disappointing” I guess. Rodgers comes off as kind of a creep.

McCarthy was the 49ers’ OC when San Francisco took QB Alex Smith instead of Rodgers in the ’05 draft. Rodgers never forgave McCarthy for saying that Smith was the better QB. Maybe that chip on his shoulder is what made Rodgers a great player. Will be curious to see how Green Bay does this year with a new coach and an aging QB who doesn’t resent him. Yet.

          12) Think my biggest takeaway from the article is how long this disconnect was allowed to go on. Former Packer players say that the team should’ve won multiple Super Bowls, but that chances were squandered, and there was lot of blame to go around. An interesting read.

          11) Two guys from the AAF have already signed with NFL teams:
          — Keith Reaser, a CB from Orlando, signed with Kansas City
          — Rashad Ross, a WR from Arizona, signed with Carolina.

          10) When an umpire tells a manager “I can do anything I want!!” that doesn’t look good for baseball, but thats what happened in Arlington Wednesday night, with Ron Kulpa tossing Astros’ manager AJ Hinch and also Houston’s hitting coach, in the 2nd inning.

Houston starts season with a 2-5 road trip; they’ve scored 10 runs in their last six games.

As for Kulpa, over last seven years, under is 112-73 when he’s been behind the plate, so he is a pitcher’s friend. Last year, he worked only eight games behind the plate.

          9) A’s 7, Red Sox 3— Oakland takes three of four from Boston; Ramon Laureano threw out another baserunner from CF; he threw three guys out in this series, all at 3rd or home.

          8) Blue Jays’ manager Charlie Montoyo went 2-5 in four games for the 1993 Montreal Expos, his only playing experience in the major leagues. Hard as hell to make it to the majors, so hats off to him, but Montoyo played in 1,028 minor league games, 534 of them at the AAA level.

Imagine how frustrating it must’ve been to be that close to the majors, yet only get the call one time? I’m guessing that experience will make him a pretty good big league skipper.

          7) In the last 18 months, Texas A&M has committed $99.3M to its football/basketball coaches when they hired Jimbo Fisher, Buzz Williams away from ACC schools.

          6) Top five cities in country, with regard to adults still living at home with their parents:
          — Riverside, CA 28.1%
          — Miami 27% (26.5% of whom are unemployed)
          — Los Angeles 26.9%
          — New York 24.7%
          — San Antonio 23.2%

          5) Indians 4, Blue Jays 1— Trevor Bauer threw 117 pitches in seven no-hit innings in his second start of the season. Last pitcher to throw 120+ pitches in an April start? Tyson Ross threw 127 in a start last April 30.

          4) From NFL Hall of Famer Gil Brandt:
“Here’s a prediction: 4 quarterbacks will be drafted in the first 25 picks this year.”

          3) Thursday was Opening Day in the minor leagues; part of being in a fantasy baseball league is checking thru boxscores and gaining knowledge. Not relevant for fantasy owners: Tim Tebow is in AAA for the Mets and went 0-4 with two strikeouts Thursday.

          2) Maybe Lebron James should coach the Lakers next year.

          1) Since 2015, Homer Bailey is 9-27 with a 6.24 ERA; he is making $23M this season.

Chris Davis is 0 for his last 37 with 21 strikeouts. He makes $23M also.

          What a country.

LEADING OFF: Red Sox struggling, Jansen back at Coors Field
              April 4, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's a happening around the majors Friday:

              SCUFFLING SOX

Boston is 2-6, the worst start for a defending World Series champion since the stripped-down Marlins bumbled to 108 losses in 1998. Rick Porcello tries to get the Red Sox going in the right direction when he pitches at Arizona. In his first start of the year, Porcello gave up nine runs - four of them earned - in 2 2/3 innings against the Seattle.

              FEELING GOOD

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen is at Coors Field for the first time since experiencing an irregular heartbeat last August in Colorado, an episode that put him in a hospital. It was the second time in his career Jansen felt his heart racing in Denver's high altitude.

Jansen didn't accompany the Dodgers when they returned to face the Rockies last September. He had a procedure in the offseason to help with the condition, and Jansen says recently talked to his doctor and is eager - and a bit anxious - about this weekend stay.

              LET IT FLY!

A's center fielder Ramon Laureano is putting on a show with his arm this week, throwing out three Red Sox runners who tried to advance on him. He nailed runners in all three Oakland wins during the four-game series.

The 24-year-old Laureano made his major league debut last year - he now has 12 assists in only 57 games in the outfield with the Athletics. Jose Altuve and the Astros will be the next team to decide whether to test Laureano when they host the A's.

              NOT A WHIFF

Baltimore slugger Chris Davis is 0 for 17 with 11 strikeouts this season. The former home run champion went hitless over his final 21 at-bats in 2018 to finish at .168, the worst batting average for a qualifier in major league history. Davis is in the fourth season of a seven-year, $161 million contract.

                        STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                        STREAKING

Kevin Gausman, Atlanta Braves (2018: 10-11, 3.92 ERA): Boy did you ever see a guy want to leave Baltimore more? Gausman went from a 4.43 ERA with the Orioles to a 2.87 one after getting traded to the Braves. Not only did he love not pitching for Baltimore, he loved pitching at Sun Trust Park.

The Braves won his five starts there with Gausman pitching to a 2.81 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP. The right-hander makes his season debut when the Braves host the Marlins tonight. Atlanta is a -160 favorite with a total of 8.

                        SLUMPING

Lance Lynn, Texas Rangers (0-0, 11.12 ERA, $121): Lynn’s 2019 did not get off to the start he would have hoped. The Cubs touched him up to the tune of seven runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings pitched which continued the trend of his struggled at the end of 2018.

After a hot start with the Yankees, Lynn pitched to a 6.23 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in his final seven starts for them. He’s hoping to turn things around when the Rangers visit the Angels tonight. Texas is a slight +105 road dog with a total of 8.5.

                        ROCKY MOUNTAIN LOW

And finally, one of favorite trends from last season makes an appearance in Line Drive. The Rocky Mountain Low. Coors Field is known for having elevated totals thanks to the thin Rocky Mountain air. But the funny thing is, the Rockies starters have begun to figure out to pitch at home. Well, maybe they finally just have some good young pitchers. Those pitchers allowed just 3.6 runs per game over their last 44 games at Coors Field with the Under going 29-14-1 (67.4 percent) in those games. There is another high total of 10.5 today as the Rockies host the Dodgers in their home opener. With the Rockies bats in a slump and the now home field advantage of Coors Field we like this trend to start the year on the right foot.

                        EARLY GAMES BLUES (JAYS)

The Blue Jays’ trend of slow starts continued Thursday, as Trevor Bauer and Cleveland’s bullpen carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning of last night’s game. The Jays are 5-for-68 with four walks the first time through the order this season and got another solid performance from a starter. The result? The Under first five innings is a perfect 8-0 in Blue Jays games this season. The First five inning total for tonight’s Game 2 in Cleveland is set at 4.0 (-110) with Trent Thornton facing off against Shane Bieber. It doesn’t hurt the Tribe’s lineup is as thin as paper right now. We like the trend to continue tonight.

                          • Dodgers hit 3 more home runs, beat Rockies 10-6
                            April 5, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger and Russell Martin homered as the Los Angeles Dodgers kept up their longball barrage, beating Colorado 10-6 Friday in the Rockies' home opener.

After hitting a franchise-record 235 home runs last year, the NL champion Dodgers have connected a whopping 21 times in only eight games this season. They've homered in every game so far.

Bellinger hit his sixth of the year, breaking the game open with a three-run drive in the fifth. Muncy finished a double shy of a cycle, walking in the ninth.

Trevor Story homered twice for the Rockies.

Kenta Maeda (2-0) threw five sharp innings and cruised through a scuffling Colorado lineup. He allowed four hits and his only run on Nolan Arenado's sacrifice fly.

Tyler Anderson (0-2) couldn't find his groove in allowing six runs over four innings.

                            RED SOX 15, DIAMONDBACKS 8

PHOENIX (AP) - Ketel Marte homered from both sides of the plate, including a grand slam, and Arizona won its home opener by keeping Boston in a funk.

Adam Jones homered and doubled for the Diamondbacks, who scored seven times in the sixth inning for a 14-1 lead. Red Sox infielder Eduardo Nunez came in to pitch the eighth and gave up a home run to Alex Avila.

Mookie Betts, who had three hits, and Mitch Moreland homered for Boston.

The defending World Series champions are 2-7 on an 11-game road trip.

Rick Porcello (0-2) gave up 10 hits and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. He flung a water cooler against the back wall of the Red Sox dugout after being removed in the fifth.

Zack Godley (1-1) gave three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings.

                            ANGELS 3, RANGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout hit two home runs to lead Los Angeles over Texas and snap a six-game losing streak.

Trout - who signed a $426.5 million, 12-year contract before the end of spring training - has homered in the Angels first two home games for the first time in his career. It is also the 15th multi-homer game of his career.

Trout hit a Lance Lynn (0-1) fastball to center field in the sixth inning to give the Angels a 2-1 lead. He added a solo shot to center in the eighth off Jesse Chavez.

Five Angels pitchers combined for a season-high 12 strikeouts. Felix Pena started and allowed one run and four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Justin Anderson (1-0) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Cody Allen picked up his second save.

                            BREWERS 13, CUBS 10

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun and Eric Thames hit three-run homers and the Milwaukee Brewers connected five times in all, sending Chicago to its sixth straight loss.

Hernan Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Orlando Arcia also homered for the defending NL Central champions, who improved to 7-1. They have won nine of their last 12 games against the Cubs, including the division tiebreaker in October.

Jason Heyward, Daniel Descalso and Willson Contreras homered for the Cubs, who fell to 1-6.

Milwaukee roughed up Jose Quintana (0-1) and led 8-0 in the third. Chase Anderson (1-0) allowed one hit in three innings.

                            PHILLIES 10, TWINS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins had three hits and drove in four runs, including Bryce Harper from first base on a single, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Minnesota despite Jorge Polanco hitting for the cycle.

Nick Pivetta (1-0) got the win.

Polanco tripled in the first, singled in the third, hit a solo homer in the fifth and lined a double off Adam Morgan leading off the seventh to complete his first cycle. He added another single in the ninth for his first five-hit game.

The Phillies jumped ahead 5-0 in the first against Jake Odorizzi (0-1) and never looked back.

                            ASTROS 3, ATHLETICS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Correa homered and Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman added two hits each to help Houston top Oakland.

The game was tied in the fourth when Correa connected off Frankie Montas (1-1) for his first home run of the season.

Collin McHugh (1-1) allowed three hits and a run in six innings to help the Astros win for only the second time in the past seven games. Roberto Osuna allowed an RBI single to Ramon Laureano with two outs in the ninth, before retiring pinch-hitter Chad Pinder for his second save.

                            PIRATES 2, REDS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove allowed three hits in seven efficient innings to outduel Sonny Gray as the Pittsburgh Pirates handed the Cincinnati Reds their third straight shutout.

Musgrove (1-0) struck out eight and walked one in his first start as Pittsburgh sent Cincinnati to its sixth loss in a row, including two blankings at PNC Park.

Cincinnati's scoreless streak reached 28 innings, the longest drought by the Reds since they went 30 innings without crossing the plate in 2015.

Jung Ho Kang broke a scoreless tie in the seventh with an RBI double. Vazquez worked a perfect ninth for his second save.

Gray (0-2) dazzled in his second start for Cincinnati, retiring 16 straight at one point.

                            INDIANS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana homered with one out in the ninth inning and made a familiar trot around the bases, leading Cleveland over Toronto in a game that featured little hitting and 24 combined strikeouts.

Santana, who returned to the Indians via trade this season after signing with Philadelphia as a free agent last year, connected on a 1-0 pitch off Joe Biagini (0-1) to give the Indians their first walk-off win of 2019.

Earlier this week, Santana passed a test to become a U.S. citizen.

Adam Cimber (1-0) struck out two and picked up the win, and Kevin Plawecki hit his first homer for Cleveland.

                            BRAVES 4, MARLINS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Kevin Gausman allowed only two hits in seven innings, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Tyler Flowers homered and Atlanta beat Miami.

The Braves won their fourth in a row. Miami has lost four straight, and dropped nine consecutive games in Atlanta.

Gausman combined with relievers Jesse Biddle and Arodys Vizcaino on a three-hitter.

Vizcaino walked Peter O'Brien to open the ninth. Pinch-hitter Martin Prado doubled down the left field line and Neil Walker walked with two outs to load the bases. Vizcaino closed out the game on Starlin Castro's fly ball to deep left field.

Gausman (1-0), who began the season on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder tendinitis, was impressive in his 2019 debut.

Pablo Lopez (1-1) gave up four runs in the fourth.

                            WHITE SOX 10, MARINERS 8

CHICAGO (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning and the Chicago White Sox won a wild home opener.

The White Sox ended Seattle's four-game winning streak. The Mariners had been off to a franchise-best 7-1 start.

Chicago took advantage of three errors by shortstop Tim Beckham in the first inning for an early lead, then rallied when the Seattle bullpen couldn't find the strike zone. The White Sox drew three walks in the seventh, with Moncada's single off Zac Rosscup making it 9-8 after Cory Gearrin (0-1) hit Welington Castillo with the bases loaded.

Ryan Burr (1-0) worked a scoreless 1 1/3 innings in relief. Alex Colome retired all three batters in the ninth for his second save in as many opportunities.

                            PADRES 5, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. and pinch-hitter Hunter Renfroe homered as the San Diego Padres overcame another home run by Paul Goldschmidt and beat St. Louis in its home opener.

Goldschmidt drew a standing ovation in his first at-bat at Busch Stadium since being traded to St. Louis. He later hit his fifth home run in seven games.

The 20-year-old Tatis, whose father - Fernando Sr. - played three seasons for the Cardinals, hit a two-run drive in the seventh off Alex Reyes (0-1).

Reliever Robert Stock (1-0) picked up the win despite giving up the tying run on an RBI single by Marcell Ozuna in the sixth. Kirby Yates closed for his fourth save.

                            RAYS 5, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Yandy Diaz and Kevin Kiermaier hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning and Tampa Bay spoiled San Francisco's home opener for the best start in Rays' franchise history.

The Rays (6-2) got four straight two-out hits in the first against Dereck Rodriguez (1-1). Given a 4-0 cushion, Tyler Glasnow (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out six.

Jose Alvarado finished for his third save, getting former Tampa Bay star Evan Longoria on a flyball with two runners on.

                                Saturday’s List of 13: My favorite non-sports movies……

These are 13 of my favorite non-sports movies. Make your own list.

Remember, these are my favorite movies, not the movies that are necessarily the best. Of the 50 movies USA Today listed as the best ever, I’ve seen two of them. Seriously.

                                13) Runaway Jury— I’m a big fan of the John Grisham books; this was my favorite of the ones that were turned into movies. Gene Hackman plays a jury consultant whose client is a gun manufacturer; John Cusack is on the jury to manipulate the verdict.

T12) Moon Over Parador— Richard Dreyfuss is an actor who is hired to stand in for the dictator of a Latin American country who suddenly dies. Jonathan Winters is a weird CIA agent whose wife is Polly Holliday, who played Flo in the old TV series Alice.

T12) Dave— Made five years after Moon Over Parador, this is basically the same movie, just set in Washington, DC.

Guy who looks just the President runs a temp service in Washington; when the real president has a stroke while screwing around with his mistress, the guy (Kevin Kline) is hired as the stand-in president. Sigourney Weaver is the First Lady.

                                11) The Verdict— Paul Newman is a struggling lawyer who is handed a winning case, which is easier said than done. His friend is played by Jack Warden, one of my all-time favorites.

                                10) The Gambler— Remake of a James Caan movie from the mid-70’s. College professor (Mark Wahlberg) seems to have an excellent life, but he has a huge gambling problem which drags him down. John Goodman plays one of the people he owes money to; he is very good in this.

                                9) The Bodyguard— Whitney Houston is a famous singer with a contract on her head; Kevin Costner is the ex-Secret Service hired to protect her.

                                8) A Few Good Men— The last scene, with Jack Nicholson on the witness stand, is tremendous. Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Pollak, JT Walsh as supporting actors is pretty strong.

                                7) Leap of Faith— Steve Martin plays a traveling preacher whose bus breaks down, stranding his crew in a drought-stricken Kansas town. Miracles ensue. Liam Neeson, Debra Winger, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meat Loaf all have supporting roles.

                                6) Molly’s Game— Young woman runs high stakes poker games for celebrities/rich guys, but when members of the Russian mob enter the game, things get complicated. This is a true story, and as we’re learning nowadays, real life is often stranger than fiction.

                                5) Lost In Translation— Bill Murray plays a washed-up actor who is in Tokyo getting paid $2M to do a whiskey commercial. He meets Scarlett Johansson in the hotel bar and they become friends.

                                4) Begin Again— Down-and-out movie producer stumbles into a Manhattan bar and discovers a young singer who can resurrect his career.

                                3) Good Will Hunting— Janitor at MIT can do complicated math problems better than the professors can, but he also has a criminal record, and has to get counseling for that. Robin Williams is great as the counselor.

                                2) Last Vegas— Four old friends get together in Las Vegas for the bachelor party of the one bachelor in group (Michael Douglas) who is marrying a woman 40 years younger than him. It is Douglas, Robert Deniro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline.

                                1) Rounders— Law student decides he’d rather play high stakes poker. The scenes with Matt Damon and his law professor (Martin Landau) are excellent. Same guys who wrote this write the great Showtime series Billions now.
