        August 7, 2019
        By Kevin Rogers

        Yankees (-250, 9 ½) at Orioles – 7:05 PM EST

New York (74-39) continues to pull away in the American League East after winning its seventh consecutive game in Tuesday’s 9-4 victory at Baltimore. The Yankees picked up their 10th straight win over the Orioles thanks to six home runs, while four pitchers tossed at least two innings to help New York improve to 12-2 against Baltimore this season.

The offense continues to thrive when facing the O’s as the Yankees have scored at least six runs in all nine wins at Camden Yards this season, while not losing a game in Baltimore. Aaron Boone’s squad has drilled the OVER in 14 of the past 17 games overall, including nine consecutive OVERS in games played away from the Bronx.

The Yankees seek the sweep this evening behind James Paxton (6-6, 4.61 ERA), who ended a five-start winless streak by beating the Red Sox in his previous trip to the mound last Friday. Paxton tossed six innings of two-hit ball, while allowing two earned runs in a 4-2 victory as a -125 home favorite. All six runs came in the first inning as UNDER bettors were sweating the total of 10, but Paxton and the Yankees’ bullpen didn’t allow a run in the final eight innings.

The Orioles (38-75) dropped their 40th home game of the season on Tuesday, marking the most home defeats of any team in the league. Since the start of July, Baltimore has won five of six games coming off back-to-back losses, while last getting swept in a series of three or more games at Oakland in mid-June.

Left-hander John Means (8-6, 3.12 ERA) returns to the mound following a stint on the injured list as the Orioles’ hurler lasted less than four innings at Arizona in his previous outing on July 24. Means has not started against the Yankees this season, but faced them in relief during the first week and allowed one run in 5.2 innings of work. The O’s have pulled off five victories with Means starting as an underdog of +140 or higher, including recent home victories over Boston and Cleveland.

        Royals at Red Sox (-310, 10 ½) – 7:10 PM EST

Dating back to July 28, Kansas City (41-74) actually has more wins than Boston (60-56). Granted, the Royals have won twice in this span and the Red Sox have only one victory, but Kansas City snapped a seven-game skid overall and an eight-game drought to Boston dating back to last May in Tuesday’s 6-2 triumph at Fenway Park. The Royals cashed as a +175 underdog behind six solid innings from Jakob Junis, while Jorge Soler went deep twice for Kansas City to raise his home run total on the season to 31.

The Royals look to improve on a 1-6 mark in their last seven road series finales as Glenn Sparkman (3-7, 5.58 ERA) takes the mound. Sparkman has been knocked around recently by allowing 19 runs in the last three starts, all losses to Cleveland twice and Minnesota. Sparkman held his own against the Red Sox at home back in early June by tossing 5.1 innings and giving up three hits and one run. Kansas City couldn’t hold onto a 2-0 lead as Boston rallied for an 8-3 victory, aided by five runs in the final two innings.

Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5, 4.19 ERA) counters for Boston as the Red Sox have won 17 of the southpaw’s 23 starts this season. The Sox had won Rodriguez’s previous five starts before falling to the Yankees, 4-2 last Friday in the Bronx. Rodriguez was staked an early 2-0 lead before allowing a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning, resulting in all of New York’s runs for the game. The left-hander was the winning pitcher against Sparkman and the Royals back on June 4 by striking out seven batters in 5.2 innings to cash as a nearly -200 road favorite in the 8-3 win.

Boston has struggled in series finales recently by losing six of its past seven in this situation, while dropping five of the last six games at Fenway since taking the first three against the Yankees in late July.

        Phillies at Diamondbacks (-135, 9) – 9:40 PM EST

Philadelphia and Arizona have split the first two games of their series at Chase Field as the two squads play the rubber match of their set tonight. The Phillies (59-54) pulled away from the Diamondbacks (57-57) in Monday’s opener, 7-3, highlighted by seven strong innings from Vince Velasquez. Arizona rebounded last night with six late runs in an 8-4 triumph in Mike Leake’s debut on the mound after getting traded from Seattle. Leake allowed 11 hits and three runs in 5.1 innings, but he was helped out by three Arizona home runs, including Eduardo Escobar’s 25th dinger on the season.

The Phillies has won eight of their last nine games coming off a loss as Jason Vargas (6-5, 3.93 ERA) makes his second start since being acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline. Vargas picked up a no-decision in his Phillies’ debut last Friday in a 4-3 setback to the White Sox as a -170 home favorite. The left-hander pitched well by giving up two runs and five hits in 6.1 innings, but Chicago outlasted Philadelphia in 15 innings.

The D-backs will see plenty of their division foes following tonight’s contest as the next 13 games come against the NL West, starting with Friday’s series in Los Angeles. Arizona sits 2 ½ games behind Philadelphia for the second Wild Card position in the National League, but the D-backs also trail the Cardinals, Brewers, and Mets.

Zac Gallen (1-3, 2.72 ERA) makes his debut with the Diamondbacks after getting dealt from the Marlins last week as the rookie right-hander is coming off a pair of solid outings against the White Sox and Twins. Gallen tossed seven innings in each of those starts, including striking out nine batters in a 2-0 triumph at Chicago on July 24 as a short underdog. Gallen is listed as a favorite for the first time in eight starts as the Marlins owned a 2-5 record when the right-hander took the mound.

            STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

            STREAKING

Gerrit Cole, Houston Astros (13-5, 2.87 ERA, $194):
The Astros have an embarrassment of riches in the starting rotation. Cole is our streaking starter, but Verlander is hotter, Greinke there now, and their fifth starter, Aaron Sanchez just threw a combined no-hitter. Wow.

Anyways, 1.29 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP with 33 punchouts over his last four starts. Additionally, Cole has allowed more than two earned runs just once since May 27th. That’s pretty good. Houston ins a massive -350 home favorite this afternoon against the Rockies.

            SLUMPING

Yusei Kikuchi, Seattle Mariners (4-8, 5.49 ERA, $-574):
To be fair, most of the Mariners are struggling, but Kikuchi’s current four-game stretch has been pretty rough. The right-hander has been tuned for an 8.24 ERA with a 1.63 WHIP over that stretch. He and the Mariners are +135 home dogs for tonight’s matchup against the Padres.

            BOMBERS AND BIRDS

Most trends that really catch your eye usually start around 10 games or so and you’re happy if they last another week or so. But not this one. Get this, the Yankees and Orioles have played to the Over 41 times in the last 52 meetings, with 10 Unders and one Push. This has a lot to do with the Yankees unreal lineup and the Orioles historic awfulness, but we digress. Tonight’s matchup features the struggling James Paxton (6-6, 4.61 ERA) of the Yankees going up against John Means (8-6, 3.12 ERA) of the Orioles.

Paxtion has an 8.78 ERA in his last three starts and a 5.83 ERA on the road, while Means has an ERA of 6.46 over his last three starts. Means has also never started against the Yankees, which is the same boat Asher Wojciechowski was in last night and he allowed five runs on six hits in four innings, including three dingers. The Over tonight is 10.

            PLUNDERING THE PIRATES

The Pirates have settled at the bottom of the NL Central standings after dropping 14 of their previous 16 games and most of that damage has come against division foes. The Buccos have lost five consecutive series against NL Central teams, including losing the first two games of their current series with the Brewers. Pittsburgh has also lost 10 of its last 13 meetings with Milwaukee.

Trevor Williams (4-4, 4.75) gets the call for the Pirates, while the Brewers counter with newly acquired Drew Pomeranz (2-9, 5.54). The Pirates are +115 home dogs with a total of 9.5.

            • Yankees extend winning streak to 8 with 14-2 rout of Orioles
              August 7, 2019
              By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) Gio Urshela and Kyle Higashioka each hit two home runs, and the Yankees' long-ball outburst against the Baltimore Orioles reached historical proportions Wednesday night in a 14-2 blowout that extended New York's winning streak to eight games.

Urshela had a pair of two-run drives, and Higashioka totaled five RBIs with his two shots. It was the first career multihomer game for both players.

The Yankees have 11 players with multihomer games against Baltimore this season, breaking the record of 10 set by San Francisco against the Dodgers in 1958.

Cameron Maybin also went deep for the Yankees, who tied a major league record with 16 home runs in a three-game series. New York has hit 52 homers against the Orioles this season, breaking its own major league mark of 48 against the Kansas City Athletics in 1956.

The frustration of being dominated in this lopsided three-game series reached a boiling point for the last-place Orioles in the middle of the fifth inning. After manager Brandon Hyde leaned over and said something to Chris Davis, the first baseman lurched in Hyde's direction and had to be restrained by teammate Mark Trumbo and hitting coach Don Long.

James Paxton (7-6) allowed one run (a homer by Trey Mancini) over 6 2/3 innings to help the Yankees roll to their 15th straight victory at Camden Yards and 12th in a row overall against the Orioles.

John Means (8-7) took the loss.

              METS 7, MARLINS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Conforto homered twice, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil hit two-run shots and New York completed a four-game sweep of Miami.

The Mets posted their sixth straight victory, winning for the 13th time in 14 games.

Steven Matz (7-7) won again at Citi Field, helping New York stay in the thick of the NL wild-card race.

Matz (7-7) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven.

Lewis Brinson put Miami on the board with an RBI single in the second. Brian Anderson added a solo homer in the sixth, his 18th.

              DODGERS 2, CARDINALS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Russell Martin drove a two-run, two-out single up the middle for the Dodgers' 10th walk-off win of the season, and Los Angeles swept St. Louis.

Casey Sadler (2-0) pitched the ninth for Los Angeles, which avoided its first shutout loss since May 18 in dramatic fashion for its fifth straight win.

Dustin May threw 5 2/3 innings of five-hit ball in a strong second career start for the Dodgers, who called up the redheaded power pitcher last week. May had seven strikeouts and held his own with Jack Flaherty, but remained winless in the big leagues.

St. Louis' bullpen couldn't come through for Flaherty, who struck out 10 with just one walk.

              BRAVES 11, TWINS 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ozzie Albies homered twice in his second straight four-hit game, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Freddie Freeman both went deep, and Atlanta beat Minnesota.

Max Fried (13-4) used a season-high 10 strikeouts to win his fourth consecutive start, pitching into the sixth inning.

The terrific trio at the top of the lineup provided more than sufficient support, with Acuna, Albies and Freeman combining for eight hits and five RBIs in 15 at-bats.

Charlie Culberson went 4 for 5 with two RBIs, Johan Camargo drove in three runs, and the Braves reached double-digit runs for the second straight day. This was the fifth time in three weeks the Twins allowed 10-plus runs.

Miguel Sano hit a three-run homer in a four-run ninth for the first-place Twins.

              WHITE SOX 8, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Ivan Nova pitched eight scoreless innings, and Chicago beat Detroit.

Nova (7-9) allowed five hits, walked three and struck out one as he picked up his third win in four starts.

Former Tiger James McCann had three RBIs, while Tim Anderson reached base five times and scored three runs.

The White Sox took three of four games from the Tigers and went 5-2 on their trip to Philadelphia and Detroit.

Detroit has lost six of seven and is 5-21 since the All-Star break.

Tyler Alexander (0-3) allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings.

              BLUE JAYS 4, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Reliever Brock Stewart allowed two hits over four scoreless innings in his Toronto debut and win over Tampa Bay.

Blue Jays rookie Bo Bichette set a team record with a double in eight straight games, breaking the mark of seven set by Carlos Delgado in 2000. The 21-year-old Bichette also extended his career-opening hitting streak to 10 games.

Ken Giles picked up his 15th save.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Randal Grichuk and Derek Fisher homered for the Blue Jays.

Rays two-way player Brendan McKay (2-2) gave up three runs and six hits in five-plus innings. Tampa Bay has won nine of its last 12.

              ASTROS 14, ROCKIES 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Yuli Gurriel drove in a team record-tying eight runs, Gerrit Cole won his 10th straight decision and Houston routed Colorado.

Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the first inning, a sacrifice fly in the third, a three-run double in the fourth and an RBI grounder in the sixth. He tied Houston's RBI record set by J.R. Towles in 2007 against St. Louis.

Cole (14-5) struck out 10 in six innings. He allowed three hits and two runs to make Houston's starters 16-1 in their last 19 starts.

The Astros swept the four-game interleague season series from Colorado. Trevor Story hit his 26th homer and Nolan Arenado added his 25th for the Rockies, who lost for the fifth time in seven games.

              BREWERS 8, PIRATES 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Keston Hiura hit two home runs and drove in three runs, powering Milwaukee to a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

Hiura hit a two-run homer with two out in the first inning and his second homer, the 13th of his rookie season, was a solo shot in the fifth. He also had a double in the third inning for the Brewers, who moved past the St. Louis Cardinals and into second place in the NL Central.

The Pirates fell to 4-21 since the All-Star break.

Junior Guerra (5-3) picked up a second win in as many nights. He allowed one hit and one walk in two innings in relief of Drew Pomeranz.

Williams (4-5) allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings.

Jacob Stallings hit solo homer and Bryan Reynolds and Starling Marte had RBI singles for Pittsburgh.

              CUBS 10, ATHLETICS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Ian Happ hit his second career grand slam, Jose Quintana tossed two-hit ball through seven innings to win his sixth straight and Chicago routed Oakland.

Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run homer, Victor Caratini connected and Javier Baez kept up his latest hot streak with two hits and two RBIs for the Cubs. NL Central-leading Chicago took two of three from the A's and won its fifth in six games.

Quintana (10-7) allowed one run, struck out seven and walked one. David Phelps and Pedro Strop each followed with a scoreless inning to wrap up a three-hitter.

A's starter Homer Bailey (9-8) set down nine of the first 10 hitters before Chicago scored five runs in the fourth. The right-hander yielded seven runs in 4 2/3 innings in his fifth start since arriving in a arriving in a trade from Kansas City on July 14.

              MARINERS 3, PADRES 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Mallex Smith doubled leading off the eighth inning and scored when Daniel Vogelbach beat out a potential inning-ending double play, and Seattle snapped a five-game losing streak.

Smith led off the eighth with a sinking liner that Wil Myers couldn't control on a diving attempt. Smith advanced to second when the ball slipped from Myers' hand on the throw and was credited with a double. J.P. Crawford bunted and catcher Austin Hedges appeared to throw out Smith at third base, only to have the call overturned on replay to put runners at the corners with no outs.

Andres Munoz (0-1) struck out Domingo Santana before Vogelbach hit a slow chopper to shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis had no play at home plate to get Smith and instead tried to turn a double play. Vogelbach shuffled down the line and beat the relay throw, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Anthony Bass pitched the ninth for his second save and capped four solid innings from Seattle's bullpen. Matt Magill (3-0) pitched the eighth to get the win.

Kyle Seager hit a solo home run for Seattle. Tatis hit his 21st homer of the season leading off the game off Seattle starter Yusei Kikuchi.

              INDIANS 2, RANGERS 0, 1ST GAME

              INDIANS 5, RANGERS 1, 2ND GAME

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered, Cleveland's bullpen combined on a four-hitter and the Indians swept a doubleheader against Texas.

Ramirez's two-run homer helped the Indians win the opener 2-0.

He connected in the second inning of the second game off Lance Lynn (14-7), Franmil Reyes hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Carlos Santana, Yasiel Puig and Jason Kipnis drove in runs in the eighth as the Indians improved to 39-16 since June 4 - baseball's best mark over two months.

A.J. Cole (3-1) - Cleveland's third pitcher - got the win by working 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Nick Wittgren got the final five outs for his third save.

Willie Calhoun homered in the eighth for the Rangers.

In the opener, Ramirez connected off Ariel Jurado (6-7), who had blanked the Indians on two singles before allowing the third baseman's 15th homer.

After struggling for three months, Ramirez, a two-time All-Star, has found his rhythm at the perfect time for the hard-charging Indians. Ramirez batted .320 in July and has raised his average by nearly 50 points since June 20.

In the opener, Nick Goody (3-0) replaced rookie starter Zach Plesac in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings. All-Star closer Brad Hand struck out the side in the ninth for his 28th save.

              NATIONALS 4, GIANTS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gerardo Parra hit a three-run homer against his former team, Joe Ross pitched six shutout innings of three-hit ball and Washington completed a three-game sweep of San Francisco.

Parra broke camp with the Giants but was designated for assignment on May 3. His seventh homer came in the third inning off Shaun Anderson (3-4) and made it 4-0.

Ross (2-3) struck out five and walked two in his third start of the season.

The Giants have lost four straight games and seven of their last eight. They scored in the ninth on Brandon Crawford's RBI double off Daniel Hudson after Tanner Rainey and Wander Suero combined for two scoreless innings.

Anderson gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in three innings.

Adam Eaton got three hits and was hit by a pitch for Washington.

Thursday’s List of 13; Doing some thinking out loud…….

                  13) From 2015-17, Cleveland Browns were 4-44; LY, they went 7-8-1, but they let Gregg Williams walk and hired QB coach Freddie Kitchens instead- he’s never been a head coach. Browns were 9-4 vs spread as an underdog LY; they were 12-30-1 the previous three years.

Browns were +7 in turnovers LY, after being -9/-12/-28 the three years before that; finally having a good QB was a big part of that.

                  12) Tennessee Titans have gone 9-7 the last three years, despite not having a positive turnover ratio in any of those years (even/-1/-4). Titans only made playoffs once in those years, and even fired a head coach after he made the playoffs, and won a playoff game.

Last three years, Titans are 6-1 vs spread as a divisional home favorite, 2-4-2 as non-divisional home favorite.

                  11) In four years since letting Jim Harbaugh walk, the 49ers are 17-47; they were 44-19-1 when he was their coach (5-3 in playoffs).

Since 2014, Niners are 13-19 vs spread as a road underdog. Over is 20-12 in their road games the last four years. SF was -25 in turnovers LY; Garoppolo got hurt and they played backup QB’s all season. Garoppolo is back now; how much of a bounce does that give the 49ers?

                  10) Bruce Arians was 49-30-1 as coach of the Cardinals; he was 20-12-1 vs spread in games with a spread of 3 or fewer points, which is very strong.

This is Jameis Winston’s 5th year in the NFL; Buccaneers are 25-39 in his first four seasons, 21-33 in Winston’s starts— it is going to be on Winston if things don’t get better this season.

Last five years, Tampa Bay is 4-13 vs spread as a home favorite.

                  9) Seahawks are 75-36-1 SU in the Russell Wilson era (8-5 in playoffs); since 2014, Seattle is 6-0 vs spread as an underdog vs NFC West opponents. Since 2011, Seahawks covered 10 of 12 games as a home underdog.

Seattle was +15 in turnovers last year; over last four years they’re +30.

                  8) Cincinnati Bengals haven’t won a playoff game since 1990; Marvin Lewis went 131-122-3 in 16 years as the Bengals’ coach, but he was 0-7 in playoff games, so Cincy turns to rookie head coach Zach Taylor, who is the son-in-law of former Packer coach Mike Sherman.

Over last decade, Bengals are 42-27-5 vs spread as an underdog, 14-7-1 at home. Cincy won four of its last five Week 1 games, with all four wins on the road.

                  7) Last year, Houston Texans ran the ball on 53% of 2nd-down plays that followed 1st down incompletions, most in the NFL. Analytics people will tell you that is a bad thing.

                  6) Over last decade, underdogs are 22-8 vs spread in Jets’ AFC East home games; they’re 5-11 as a favorite when hosting a division foe, 11-3 when an underdog.

Over last four years, Jets are 5-12-1 vs spread on grass; since 2011, they’re 8-18-2 vs spread as an non-divisional road underdog. Over is 19-11-1 in their home games the last four years.

                  5) From 2015-17, Buffalo was 22-20 in Tyrod Taylor’s starts; they made the playoffs in 2017 for the first time since 1999, but then they drafted QB Josh Allen, shipped Taylor off to Cleveland and regressed to 6-10 LY, with seven losses by 11+ points.

Over last five years, Buffalo is 7-2-2 vs spread as a non-divisional road underdog; last three years, they’re 4-7 as a home underdog.

Allen’s development is essential; Bills were 33-31 in the four years before he got to Buffalo.

                  4) From 2005-2016, Rams were 60-113-1; in two years under Sean McVay, they’re 24-8, with a +19 turnover ratio. Under McVay, Rams are 10-5 at home, 14-3 on road.

LA is reshuffling its offensive line this year; they’ll have new starters at left guard/center.

                  3) Since 2014, Carolina Panthers are 7-3 vs spread as a home underdog[ 3-3 in divisional games, 4-0 outside NFC South. Since 2012, Panthers are 22-11 as a road underdog, 6-16-1 as a road favorite. Carolina won four of last five Week 1 games, allowing 14 or fewer points in all four wins.

                  2) Jacksonville has had one winning season since 2007 (10-6 in ’17); they were +10 in turnovers that year. Nick Foles spent two years as a backup QB on Andy Reid-coached teams, starting seven games; he’s won a Super Bowl but has never started more than 11 games in a season.

None of Jacksonville’s backup QB’s have ever played in an NFL game.

Last six years, Jaguars are 4-20 vs spread when facing an NFC team; this year will be the 8th year in a row they’ll be a Week 1 underdog (3-4 vs spread in last seven).

                  1) Kansas City’s turnover ratios the last four years: +9/+15/+16/+14- thats +54 in 64 games.

Last three years, Chiefs scored 33-42-38 points in their season opener. KC covered nine of its last 12 games as a road underdog. Over last four years, Chiefs are 12-5 vs spread in games with a spread of 3 or fewer points.

                  • LEADING OFF: Indians take aim at Target, Hamels rolling
                    August 7, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                    TARGET TIME

A couple months ago, Cleveland trailed the Twins by 11 1/2 games in the AL Central and was being written off as too old and too banged-up. But by going a baseball-best 38-16 since June 4, the Indians have closed within two games of Minnesota heading into this four-game series at Target Field.

Mike Clevinger (6-2, 3.07 ERA) starts the opener for the Indians against Kyle Gibson (11-4, 4.02). Clevinger is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last three road starts.

''Guys are in a good mood, feeling good and excited to get to Minnesota,'' Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis said.

                    HOT AS COLE

Cubs lefty Cole Hamels (6-3, 2.84 ERA) looks to stay on track against Alex Wood (1-0, 3.18) at Cincinnati. Hamels pitched five shutout innings versus Milwaukee last Saturday in his return from a five-week stint on the injured list with a strained oblique, and is 2-2 with a 1.07 ERA in his last seven starts.

Two-time All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to join the Cubs - he signed this week after being cut by the Angels.

                    STORY BOOKED

Rockies star Trevor Story has homered four times in five games. His 114 career home runs are the most in major league history for a shortstop's first 500 games, surpassing Alex Rodriguez (103), Nomar Garciaparra (101) and Ernie Banks (100).

Story tries to keep his surge going when Colorado visits San Diego.

                    AVAILABLE

Greg Holland, a three-time All-Star who led the National League in saves in 2017 with 41, has been cut by the Diamondbacks.

The 33-year-old Holland had allowed at least one run in seven of his past 13 appearances. He's 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA run average in 40 games.

Holland has 17 saves in 22 chances, but saw his ERA climb from 2.33 at the end of June to its current number.
