      • Friday's Diamond Notes
        Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Indians (9-4 last 13)

Cleveland finished off a seven-game homestand by compiling a 5-2 record, capped off by a 5-4 victory over Minnesota on Thursday. The Indians extended their lead atop the AL Central to 11 games over the Twins, the largest advantage in all of baseball. Cleveland is set to play its fifth consecutive series against a team with a losing record, as the Tribe is 4-0 in the past four series since dropping two of three at home to the Pirates in late July.

The Indians head to Chicago to take on the struggling White Sox, who were just swept at home by the Yankees. Cleveland pulled off a three-game home sweep of Chicago in June, outscoring the White Sox, 24-5. Shane Bieber heads to the hill for the Tribe in Friday’s opener as the right-hander ended a two-start skid by beating the Angels in his last outing. Bieber has not faced the White Sox this season, who are 2-7 in their past nine home contests.

Coldest team: Rockies (3-8 last 11)

Colorado rolled to a 13-2 stretch at Coors Field from July 2 through August 6. The Rockies have slipped up lately by dropping the final two games to the Pirates and falling to the Dodgers on Thursday, 8-5. Since sweeping Oakland at home in late July, the Rockies have dropped eight of their last 11 games, including three straight series losses to the Cardinals, Brewers, and Pirates.

Jon Gray takes the mound for Colorado tonight as the Rockies have won six straight starts made by the right-hander. Gray has tossed at least seven innings in each of his past four outings, while all four wins came against teams with winning records. Gray has not faced the Dodgers this season, but he beat Los Angeles twice last season as a heavy underdog.

Hottest pitcher: Zack Wheeler, Mets (6-6, 3.89 ERA)

New York went through an eight-game stretch from May through mid-June in which Wheeler took the mound and the Mets lost eight times. However, Wheeler has turned things around lately by winning four straight starts, while the Mets are 5-0 in his past five outings. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his last two trips to the hill in victories over the Pirates and Braves, while the Mets are 4-0 in his past four starts at Citi Field following an 0-8 start in Wheeler’s first eight home starts. Wheeler faces the Marlins tonight in Miami as he is 1-1 in two starts against their division rival this season.

Coldest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (7-10, 4.38 ERA)

It’s easy to point to Baltimore as a cold department candidate for anything all season as it owns a 35-80 record. Bundy leads the O’s in victories with seven, but has won once in his last five starts. The right-hander pitched well in his last outing at Texas by allowing two runs in six innings, but the Orioles lost, 3-1. The Orioles host the Red Sox tonight as Baltimore has lost all three starts made by Bundy this season against Boston.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-1 last six)

San Diego returns home following a successful road trip (by their standards) as the Padres posted a 4-3 record against the Cubs and Brewers. The offense busted out on the back-end of the trip as the Padres plated 29 runs in the final three wins, including an eight-spot in Thursday’s 8-4 triumph at Milwaukee. The Padres host the Phillies tonight as San Diego is riding a 10-game losing streak at Petco Park. Jacob Nix makes his Major League debut tonight for the Padres as he faces a Phillies’ squad that saw the UNDER cash in all three games at Arizona.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (9-2 last 11)

Oakland picked up a split with the Dodgers on Wednesday as the offense did just enough in a 3-2 win. The A’s have allowed three runs or fewer in eight of the past nine games to help out this current UNDER run, but Oakland hits the road for the first time since getting swept at Colorado last month and scoring four runs in three losses. The A’s travel south to Anaheim to face the Angels, who are riding a 4-1 UNDER stretch themselves. Southpaw Brett Anderson is coming off his best start of the season for Oakland by tossing seven scoreless innings in an extra-innings victory over Detroit last Friday.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Astros

Seattle rebounded from a pair of losses at Texas to rack Justin Verlander early in Thursday’s 8-6 triumph at Houston. The Mariners are slowly slipping down the Wild Card standings in the American League, but Seattle struck for six runs off Verlander in two innings to help James Paxton beat Houston for the fourth time this season.

The Astros fell to 2-5 in their last seven home series openers as they try to rebound tonight behind Gerrit Cole. The Houston right-hander is coming off a pair of losses to the Mariners and Dodgers his last two times out, while allowing four hits and two earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 2-0 defeat at Safeco Field on July 30. The Astros have won eight of Cole’s 10 starts at Minute Maid Park this season, but Houston hasn’t won at home since before the All-Star break.

Mike Leake counters for Seattle, as the Mariners have lost five of his past seven starts. Leake is coming off four consecutive quality starts, while picking up a no-decision in a 6-3 home win over the Blue Jays his last time out. Seattle has fared well in Leake’s starts away from Safeco Field this season by posting a 7-3 mark, including four wins as an underdog of +140 or higher.

Betcha didn’t know: The Cardinals head to Kansas City for the battle of I-70 tonight. St. Louis has struggled in road series openers recently by going 0-4 in his past four opportunities. The Royals avoided the sweep to the Cubs by blanking Chicago on Wednesday, 9-0, but Kansas City has put together a 2-8 record this season in series openers off a win.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-210) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Blue Jays (+100) vs. Rays

Biggest line move: Twins (-108 to -118) at Tigers

          • Heyward, Rizzo help Cubs rally past Nationals, 3-2
            August 10, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Ronald Guzman became the first rookie to hit three home runs in a game against the Yankees, powering the Texas Rangers past New York 12-7 on Friday night.

Eight days after Boston's Steve Pearce connected three times off the Yankees, Guzman duplicated the feat in ending New York's four-game winning streak.

Guzman grounded out his first time up, then hit solo home runs in three straight at-bats. The 23-year-old first baseman batted again in the eighth with a chance to tie the big league record for homers in a game - no rookie has ever hit four - but struck out swinging against Chad Green.

Guzman's two homers off Masahiro Tanaka (9-3) and one off A.J. Cole made him the first Texas player to hit three home runs in a game since Adrian Beltre in 2012.

Overall, Guzman has 12 home runs this season, six against the Yankees.

Beltre also joined in the fun with his seventh homer of the season, tying recent Hall of Fame inductee Chipper Jones for the 33rd spot on baseball's career list with 469.

Mike Minor (9-6) won his third straight start.

Guzman pulled homers to right field in the fourth and the sixth that made it 6-1 and chased Tanaka. Guzman went the opposite way for a drive in the seventh off Cole.

Austin Romine and Brett Gardner homered for the Yankees.

            RED SOX 19, ORIOLES 12

BALTIMORE (AP) - Xander Bogaerts and Andrew Benintendi each hit three-run homers, Brock Holt connected in a six-run sixth inning and Boston overpowered the Baltimore.

After hitting for the cycle one night earlier, Mookie Betts went 3 for 4 with two walks and three RBIs. The 19 runs were the most for Boston since a 22-run outburst against Seattle in August 2015.

The Red Sox have won 11 of 13 to open a nine-game lead over the second-place Yankees in the AL East.

Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi gave up eight runs, four earned, and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Orioles reliever Miguel Castro (2-7) walked three of the five batters he faced.

After the Orioles closed to 11-10 in the bottom half, Benintendi homered in the seventh. Drew Pomeranz (2-5) got the win in his first relief appearance since 2016.

Chris Davis, Tim Beckham and Mark Trumbo homered for the Orioles.

            CUBS 3, NATIONALS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Heyward broke up a no-hitter with a tying two-run single in the sixth inning, Anthony Rizzo drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and Chicago beat Washington.

In the first meeting between the teams since Chicago beat Washington in the NL Division Series, the Cubs won even though they didn't get a hit against Nationals starter Jeremy Hellickson.

Rizzo walked three times. Manager Joe Maddon got ejected, but the Cubs pulled out the victory.

Hellickson was sailing along, retiring 17 in a row after issuing a leadoff walk to Rizzo in the first. But things took a wild turn with two out in the sixth.

He walked Rizzo on 13 pitches and both Javier Baez and Ben Zobrist on four to load the bases. Heyward took two balls from Sammy Solis (1-2) before lining the tying single past second baseman Daniel Murphy.

Chicago took a 3-2 lead in the seventh after Maddon got tossed for arguing an interference call against Willson Contreras on the bases.

Kyle Hendricks gave up two runs and eight hits in six innings for Chicago. Steve Cishek (3-1) struck out the final two batters in the seventh. Carl Edwards Jr. got three outs in the eighth after former Washington pitcher Brandon Kintzler walked the first two batters.

Pedro Strop worked the ninth for his ninth save in 12 chances.

            RAYS 7, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Blake Snell pitched five perfect innings and then was pulled, Michael Perez hit his first career home run and Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Making his second start since spending time on the disabled list because of shoulder fatigue, Snell (13-5) threw 47 pitches. The All-Star lefty struck out six.

Reliever Jake Faria came on to begin the sixth and gave up an infield single to leadoff batter Luke Maile. Two outs later, Randal Grichuk hit a single to left but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. Faria allowed one walk and three singles in three innings. Jamie Schultz pitched a hitless ninth for the Rays.

Perez, playing in his 10th big league game, hit a two-run homer in the third inning and Ji-Man Choi added a solo drive in the sixth. Both came off Marco Estrada (5-9).

            MARINERS 5, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit a tiebreaking two-run double in a three-run eighth inning to lift Seattle past Houston.

Mitch Haniger doubled with one out in the eighth, and Denard Span singled to chase starter Gerrit Cole (10-5). Ryan Pressly took over and his first pitch plunked Jean Segura on the top of his left hand. Cruz then smashed a ball off the wall in left-center to score Haniger and Span and make it 4-2. The Mariners tacked on a run when Segura scored on Kyle Seager's groundout.

Seattle starter Mike Leake allowed eight hits and two runs in six innings. Adam Warren (1-1) allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh for the win and Edwin Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 44th save. Gerrit Cole (10-5) was the loser.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Anthony DeSclafani struck out a season-high nine to outduel Clay Buchholz and scored one of Cincinnati's two runs on Billy Hamilton's suicide-squeeze bunt to help the Reds beat Arizona.

DeSclafani (6-3) allowed three hits and no walks while pitching into the eighth inning of his second straight shutdown outing. He limited Washington to one run on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in seven innings of a 7-1 victory last Saturday.

DeSclafani also singled in the seventh and scored from first base on Buchholz's throwing error on Hamilton's bunt up the first base line, which drove in Tucker Barnhart.

Raisel Iglesias struck out A.J. Pollock in the ninth for his 22nd save.

Buchholz (5-2) saw his personal winning streak snapped at five.

            ROCKIES 5, DODGERS 4

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the seventh after replacing injured slugger Nolan Arenado, and Colorado's beleaguered bullpen kept Los Angeles in check.

McMahon entered the game in the fifth when Arenado was taken out with soreness in his right shoulder. McMahon lined a fastball from reliever Zac Rosscup (0-1) to straightaway center.

The bullpen finished things off a day after giving up five homers and seven runs. The relievers went a combined 3 1/3 scoreless innings after starter Jon Gray left, with Jake McGee (2-4) picking up the win and Adam Ottavino closing out the ninth instead of a struggling Wade Davis. It was Ottavino's fifth save.

DJ LeMahieu had a two-run homer in the first to help the Rockies snap a six-game skid against the Dodgers at Coors Field. It was his first homer since June 28.

Palka launched a 1-2 pitch from Neil Ramirez (0-2) six rows up into the left field seats for his 18th homer. The shot ended Chicago's three-game losing streak.

Jace Fry (1-2), the White Sox's third reliever, got the last two outs for his first major league victory. Rodon and Cleveland rookie Shane Bieber tossed crisp scoreless ball deep into the game. Each was relieved after 106 pitches.

              • Saturday’s 6-pack

                — Nick Saban comes from modest means; his family owned a gas station in West Virginia.

                — 43 of 82 Lakers games will either be on ABC, TNT, ESPN or NBATV; not the Warriors, the Lakers.

                — Redskins’ rookie RB Derrius Guice tore his ACL. Not good.

                — In this coming NBA season, Trailblazers will travel the most miles, Cavaliers the least.

                — Melania Trump’s parents became naturalized US citizens Thursday; good for them.

                — Since 2010, Alabama has had 25 first round NFL Draft picks; Florida/Ohio State are next, with 13 each.

                Tweet of the Day
“When it came to helping other sports, Nick (Saban) was unbelievable.”
Bob Starkey, an assistant basketball coach at LSU while Saban was head coach there

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                13) Westgate Super Contest is a $1,500 buy-in football handicapping contest; you pick five NFL games a week, and first prize is around $1M- they pay off 30 places, I think, maybe more. Thing is, if you don’t live in Las Vegas, you need a person who will put your picks in for you every week at the Westgate.

There are actually people who charge $240 or so to do this for you; talk about easy freakin’ money. 17 times, you take the person’s five picks, drive to the Westgate SuperBook, and put the picks in. Not a difficult job. Do it for, say 8 people, and thats an easy $1,920 you’re banking.

                12) Miami Marlins traded 1B Justin Bour to the Phillies for McKenzie Mlls, who was 2-3, 3.51 in 20 games (16 starts) in the AA Eastern League.

Bour is making $3.4M this year, is arbitration-eligible this winter, so the Marlins cheaped out on this deal- will they ever be good? Bour has 19 homers; does this mean Carlos Santana will play some outfield for the Phillies?

                11) On 4th-and-2 from the Giants’ 13-yard line Thursday, Cleveland went for it, midway thru second quarter. You would never do that in the regular season, but it made sense here, since you want to see players in game situations, and you know you can make a 30-yard FG.

                10) From Doug Kern: This season, the Colorado Rockies have had two pitchers give up 10+ hits in a game but also strike out 10+ in same game; both of them lost. German Marquez did it Wednesday, and Jon Gray did it May 13.

Last team to have two different pitchers lose such a game in the same season: the 1939 St Louis Browns

                9) Kansas State’s football coach, 78-year-old Bill Snyder, agreed to a 5-year contract extension thru the 2022 season. The contract increases Snyder’s pay to $3.45M for this year, which will then increase by $300,000 in both 2019 and 2020.

Snyder has been in a political struggle to determine his successor; his son has been the special teams coach at K-State for a long time. Snyder would obviously like his son to succeed him.

                8) San Diego Padres saved more than $750,000 by allowing pitchers Tyson Ross and Jordan Lyles to leave on waiver claims Sunday; they also save $200,000 for every start Ross makes between 20 and 29 (he has 22 now).

                7) After finishing 12th at the British Open in Scotland last month, the European Tour paid Tommy Fleetwood $154,500. One small problem; it was the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

The guy who got the money put in his account mistakenly is a golf pro in Florida.

                6) Tampa Bay Rays’ 2B Joey Wendle seems like a decent player; he was 7-17 in his last four games, is hitting .292, so of course on Thursday, he takes a seat? Why?

Does Tampa Bay have so many great players that Wendle has to sit? He is hitting .300 vs lefties, .291 vs righties, so it wasn’t that. Why do teams get run like Little League now, where everyone has to play? Play the best players!!!

                5) There was recently a 3-day fantasy football convention in Fort Worth, TX. Wonder how much people paid to get into that, and whether they learned anything worthwhile.

                4) How did Daniel Murphy never wind up as a DH? To me he is a lot like Wade Boggs was, a prolific hitter who would be great to pencil in the lineup every day, but you see Murphy reach for a ground ball now and he looks like a guy on his last legs athletically.

When he has a bat in his hands, he is still very dangerous.

                3) More baseball stuff:
                — Angels put Mike Trout (wrist) on the DL.
                — Washington took Jeremy Hellickson out in 6th inning Friday, after he walked bases full with a 2-0 lead; he was also pitching a no-hitter at the time.

                2) I wonder every month why ESPN the Magazine still gets delivered to my house; I don’t pay for it, it is (mostly) terrible; I just shake my head when it arrives each month.

This month is (kind of) an exception; there is a very good article about Nick Saban, and 14 stories about him that explain what makes him tick. Enjoyed the article.

                1) Mookie Betts hit for the cycle Thursday but Boston lost; of the last 44 players to hit for the cycle, that player’s team went 40-4 in those games.

                • LEADING OFF: Dodgers await wait on Jansen, Martinez tops 100
                  August 11, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                  NO WORD YET

The Dodgers are still waiting for definitive word on how long closer Kenley Jansen might be out because of an irregular heartbeat. He was put on the 10-day disabled list Friday and manager Dave Roberts wasn't sure if his absence would be 10 days or possibly even closer to a month - like it was when the right-hander went on the DL for the same thing seven years ago.

''I'm hoping as soon as I can to get something, just for my peace of mind, the guys on the field - our peace of mind,'' Roberts said. ''His health is most important. Whatever they have to do, the doctors have to do, to protect him.''

The 30-year-old Jansen was tied for the NL lead with 32 saves. In his absence, Roberts will use a closer-by-committee approach.

                  HOW MANY?

J.D. Martinez has become the first major leaguer this season to top the century mark in RBIs - the Boston bopper is at 101 after driving in two more Friday night at Baltimore.

Martinez set a career high with 104 RBIs last year while playing for Detroit and Arizona. The AL East-leading Red Sox have 45 games left for him to keep piling up the total.

                  SEATTLE SURGE

After beating Astros aces Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole on consecutive nights, the Seattle Mariners try to keep up their run at Minute Maid Park. Next, they'll face Charlie Morton (12-2, 2.81 ERA). Wade LeBlanc (6-2, 3.81) starts for Seattle, which trails Houston by six games in the AL West.

                  DOING DAMAGE

Ronald Guzman has been a one-man wrecking crew against the Yankees this season. The Texas rookie has hit six home runs in 15 at-bats vs. New York - and only six more in 263 at-bats against everyone else. The 23-year-old Guzman homered three times Friday night in the Bronx, making him the first rookie to hit three in a game against the Yankees.

                  NICE START

Cedric Mullins became the first Baltimore player to get three hits in his major league debut, also scoring three runs and driving in a pair during a 19-12 loss Friday night to Boston. The 23-year-old Mullins doubled twice while batting ninth and playing center field.

All-Star Adam Jones has played center field since his arrival at Camden Yards in 2008. But the 33-year-old will finish the season in right field as the last-place Orioles look to next season and beyond. ''This is about the future going forward,'' manager Buck Showalter said.

                  KEEP TRYING

Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio is 0-4 in 13 starts since winning in late May at Philadelphia. He hopes to end that skid when he pitches at home against Tampa Bay.

                    Close Shaves

The Oakland Athletics easily lead the way in one-run games, winning 22 of 31 decided by one run. It's a bit of a surprise to some that the Seattle Mariners, as well as the A's, are in contention in the American League West. A major reason for their success has been their ability to win the close games. It also helps that they have a stud assigned to ninth-inning duties when they have the lead. All-Star closers Edwin Diaz and Blake Treinen aren't coughing up the leads when the manager entrusts them to close out ball games. The teams on this list with rough records in one-run games have had a bullpen in flux, and closers either struggling or suffering injuries at various points this season.

                    Looking Ahead

                    Saturday, Aug. 11

The Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros battle each other in a key American League West contest. The M's have won three of their past 10 games heading into Friday's tilt, and they're just 2-5 in their past seven on the road against right-handed starting pitching. They're also just 3-8 in the past 11 road outings. Perhaps Wade LeBlanc will snap them out of their mini funk, as the M's are 19-7 over his past 26 starts and 9-1 in his past 10 when working on four days of rest. However, be careful, as Seattle has dropped each of his past five assignments on the road when facing a team with a winning overall mark. The Astros entered play Friday with six wins over their past eight contests. They're 41-20 in the past 61 against American League West foes while going 5-2 in the past seven against winning sides. Houston has also picked up victories in seven of Charlie Morton's past 10 starts, including six of his past eight at Minute Maid Park. The Astros are just 1-4 in the past five home starts by Morton against teams with a winning record, and they're just 1-6 over the past seven with Morton working on four days of rest.

Total bettors have been pounding the 'under' in LeBlanc's starts, as well as Morton's outings. The under is 4-1 in the past five outings by LeBlanc while going 3-1-1 in his past five inside the division. The under is 6-2 in Morton's past eight appearances while going 11-5 in his past 16 at home. The under has also hit in four of Morton's past five starts against the M's.

The Indians and White Sox had a pitcher's duel at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday night, and Trevor Bauer and James Shields look to duplicate the success of their predecessors. Cleveland has won five straight outings by Bauer, and they're 5-0 over Bauer's past five inside the division, too. They're also 6-1 in the past seven against teams with a losing record, while the Indians are 4-1 in Bauer's past five starts against the Pale Hose. The under is also 9-4 in Bauer's past 13 appearances against Chicago, while the under has hit in each of Big Game James' past four outings against the Tribe. For Chicago, they're a dismal 3-13 over Shields' past 16 against winning sides, and they're just 6-15 over his past 21 overall.

Cubs LHP Jon Lester was 12-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 19 starts before the All-Star break, but he is just 0-2 with an 8.53 ERA in four outings since the break with the opposition hitting .342 against him over the past 19 innings. He'll face the Nationals on Saturday. The Cubs are 10-2 over Lester's past 12 vs. NL East, and they're 17-5 in his past 22 at home against teams with a winning overall record.

                    Weather Report

The O's have been so poor this season that they're likely praying for rain. Their prayers might be answered, as there is a 45 percent chance of thunderstorms or greater from first pitch through 7pm ET. The Rangers and Yankees will also be watching the radar, as there is a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms all morning, tapering off to just 40 percent by 5pm ET. It wouldn't be shocking to see a postponement in this one.

Those are the only trouble spots as far as precipitation is concerned. Winds will affect the Phillies and Padres, as a breeze from 10-13 mph will be blowing left to right at Petco Park. The winds will again be blowing out to straightaway center field at AT&T Park in San Francisco from 13-16 mph, affecting the total outcome in Pirates-Giants.

                    Sunday, Aug. 12

CC Sabathia will face Martin Perez in a battle of southpaws on Sunday. Sabathia is coming off a 12-strikeout performance on the road against the White Sox last time out, but he hasn't won in five straight outings dating back to July 4. The good news is that he has just one loss over the past five starts. The bad news is he has walked 17 batters over the past 30 innings across his past six appearances, and he has no quality starts since that Independence Day victory against the Braves.

Orioles RHP Alex Cobb has had a forgettable first season in Charm City, going 3-14 with a 5.55 ERA and 1.51 WHIP across 116 2/3 innings over his 21 starts. One of the Boston native's wins has come against the Red Sox, a rare quality start and road win back at Fenway Park on May 18. In that game he allowed just three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings, but he also allowed 10 hits. Cobb has been better lately, however, turning in three straight quality starts. He hasn't had four straight quality starts since July 8-26 when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Giants RHP Dereck Rodriguez has been quite the find for San Francisco, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. He'll take the ball on Sunday against the visiting Pirates, and he has been even better at home. Rodriguez has posted a 3-0 record, 1.99 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings across six starts and one relief appearance at home while the opposition is batting just .196 against him at AT&T Park. He hasn't yet faced the Pirates. The Bucs entered Friday's game on a three-game winning streak, but just 11-19 across their 30 games against American League West opponents.

Cubs LHP Cole Hamels will make his Wrigley Field debut on Sunday against the Nationals after a pair of success road outings. He has posted a 2-0 record, 0.82 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 11 innings in two road outings as a member of the Cubs. He has yet to serve up a homer while wearing a Cubs uniform, an issue which plagued him as a member of the Texas Rangers. Hamels allowed 23 long balls over 114 1/3 innings in 20 starts for the Rangers earlier this season. All-Star Max Scherzer has been phenomenal on the road, going 8-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 11 starts this season while striking out 93 batters in just 72 innings while the opposition is hitting just .182 overall against him this season.

                    Weather Report

The rains will stick around for Sunday in Balto., as there is a 45 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms from first pitch through the early evening. Since these teams are division rivals, it wouldn't be shocking to see this game made up at a later date. The Rangers-Yankees game will also have the same weather forecast, although it looks like there is a window around 5pm where the weather could taper off enough to allow for the game to be played.

Like Saturday, those are the only trouble spots for precipitation. While the winds will be down to 9-12 mph at Petco on Sunday, winds will again be the story in San Francisco. There will be a jetstream blowing out to straightaway center field from 13-16 mph for Pirates-Giants.

For the Sunday night game, the Nationals and Cubs will see the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field, although it will be relatively tranquil at 6-9 mph from straightaway center field. The conditions will be neutral at best, but don't expect a slugfest.

                    • Wkd Series Prices - Best Bets
                      August 10, 2018

MLB Weekend Series Prices Best Bets

It was another rough week on the diamond with my series plays last week, as losses by the Royals and Dodgers in the first two games of their respective series' a week ago sealed the fate of those plays early.

Looking back at it, backing the Royals was probably a mistake because it's going to be tough to trust them or similar teams (Baltimore, San Diego) to win at least two of three against anyone. In spot's like that it's probably better to look for single game opportunities to play on said team (in this case Kansas City) because it's just one game and the value in price will still be there given how bad they've been all year.

Regarding the Dodgers play against Houston in their World Series rematch, there's no need to question it, it just didn't get us to the window. L.A missed their opportunity in Game 1 (2-1 Houston win) and that was clearly the swing game for the series.

But it's time to move on to this week's action so let's get right to it:

Milwaukee Brewers (+110) vs Atlanta Braves (-130)

This might turn into being the most interesting series of the weekend in terms of the NL standings, as both of these teams are doing everything they can to hunt down the Cubs and Phillies in their respective divisions. That means we've also got potential wildcard implications in play for the winner of this three-game set, so there could be some playoff-type games this weekend.

If that's going to be the case, it's hard not to take the value with the Milwaukee Brewers here. Milwaukee took three of four from Atlanta earlier this year, and that includes a 10-3 drubbing against Atlanta's projected Sunday starter Sean Newcomb. In fact, the Brewers outscored the Braves 23-14 in that series and domination like that is a little hard to ignore.

This play is really all about value for me with the underdog price attached to Milwaukee. Considering that Friday's game is lined basically as a pick'em and chances are Saturday and Sunday's ML's will be close to that, I'll take the +110 price now and look for the Brewers to win at least twice.

                      Odds per - Bookmaker.eu

Best Bet: Milwaukee Brewers to win series

                      Oakland Athletics (+120) vs L.A Angels (-140)

This series is really more of the same from a betting perspective for me as it's just too hard to pass up the +120 price on the better team. Oakland has done everything they can the past two months to climb back into a position to fight for the AL West title down the stretch and they aren't about to stop now. Furthering their cause against a listless Angels team that still is pondering what went wrong this year is definitely not a bad betting option in my eyes.

Both sides enter the weekend playing some good baseball as the A's have won seven of their last eight and the Angels just swept the Tigers to begin the week. But, Oakland's push has been months long now and with this series starting a stretch of four straight matchups against AL West rivals for Oakland, the A's know that the time is now to play their best baseball and pile up the victories. No better place to start that goal then against this Angels team.

Oakland is already in the -115 range for Friday's series opener, and I doubt we will see an individual game ML price for the A's north of this +120 number, and if we do it won't be by much. Yet, when you look at the fact that not only has Oakland won seven of eight, but when you see that they held their opponents to three runs or less in all seven of those victories, the picture starts to get clearer of just how well they are playing right now. It's also been 11 straight games since Oakland allowed an opponent to score at least five runs against them.

L.A may have beat up on a listless Tigers team this week, but they haven't won too many games this year scoring three or fewer runs, so if Oakland keeps that run going defensively, the +120 price is a steal.

MLB Preview - Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves

A game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves in August didn’t look that appealing at the beginning of the season, but both teams are in the thick of the playoff hunt down the stretch. The Brewers and Braves are currently in line to grab the two wild card spots in the National League, but there is still much to be decided.

The Braves are right on the heels on the Phillies for the lead in the National League East. The Brewers are close to the Cubs for the top spot in the National League Central. But a skid could lead to trouble as neither team is safe from getting leapfrogged for a wild card spot.

There is a bunch on the line down the stretch and each side will aim to pick up a win in this weekend matchup. The Braves have a slightly inferior record but get the game at home, which could make them the favorites in MLB odds.

This MLB baseball game between the Milwaukee Brewers at Atlanta Braves will be held at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia at 7:10 p.m ET on Saturday, August 11th. The game will be played nationally televised on FS1.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                        Odds Analysis

The Brewers are 66-52 on the season with a positive run-differential of 34. They have been decent on the road this season with a record of 30-28 and would love to pull out the win.

The Braves are 62-50 overall with a more impressive plus-69 run-differential. Atlanta has gone 28-23 at home on the season. Atlanta has won seven of its past 10 games. The Braves have one of the better offenses in the major leagues so the runline could be higher than most games.

                        Probable Pitchers

The Braves will have Julio Teheran on the mound on Saturday. He has a record of 8-7 with a 4.48 ERA. Teheran had a decent outing last time out, giving up three runs in 5.2 innings pitched, striking out six. Teheran has had an interesting season, as within the past several weeks he has allowed zero runs in three outings but also giving up five or more three times.

The Brewers plan to start Wade Miley. The lefty is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.10. He has not started very many games this season so his ERA should be taken with a grain of salt. Miley is a standard back-end-of-the-rotation starter and should be treated as such when it comes to the MLB betting.

                        Key Stat

                        2. That’s the number of veteran bats the Brewers added near the trading deadline to help their playoff push. They picked up third baseman Mike Moustakas from the Kansas City Royals while grabbing second baseman Jonathan Schoop from the Orioles.

Both are solid hitters who help give the middle of the order some more punch. Milwaukee already picked up Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain before the season, and the new-look lineup has paid dividends.

Teheran will need to do a nice job because these are some professional hitters he will be facing.

                        Free MLB ATS Picks

The Brewers have more talent than they did a few weeks ago but the Braves are at home and have a solid roster themselves. It wouldn’t be a shock if one of these two clubs fell off and failed to make the playoffs because the Dodgers and Diamondbacks in the N.L. West may both make it.

This game is huge for both teams and while Teheran has been up and down on the year, he should be able to have a good enough outing to help his team win a close affair in MLB wagering.

MLB ATS Pick: Braves 6, Brewers 4
