          • Thursday's Diamond Notes
            July 12, 2018

Hottest team: Red Sox (9-0 last nine)

After getting blown out by the Yankees, 11-1 to begin July, the Red Sox have not lost. Boston has pulled off three consecutive sweeps over Washington, Kansas City, and Texas. Although the Royals and Rangers are both last-place squads, the Red Sox won all six of those games by at least two runs to cash on the run-line. In Wednesday’s 4-2 victory over Texas, Chris Sale closed as a nearly -400 favorite at several sports books, while Boston was listed as a -180 favorite or higher in each of the past six games.

The Red Sox are a heavy favorite once again on Thursday as the Blue Jays invade Fenway Park. David Price has been anything but sharp recently for Boston as the southpaw has allowed 15 hits, 12 earned runs, and six home runs in his last two starts. However, both those starts came on the road as the Red Sox are 4-0 in Price’s last four outings at Fenway Park, which includes an 8-3 win over Toronto in late May.

Coldest team: Nationals (3-12 last 15 on road)

Washington captured three of four games from Miami last weekend, which makes this cold streak a bit tricky. The Nationals have struggled away from D.C. of late by going winless in six consecutive road series. Since mid-June, the Nationals have won only two away games in 12 tries, including series losses at Tampa Bay, Toronto, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.

Max Scherzer takes the mound tonight as Washington travels to New York to face the Mets. Scherzer won the first time in six starts as the Nationals pounded the Marlins last Saturday, 18-4 as the Cy Young winner gave up four earned runs in seven innings. Scherzer has not started against the Mets this season, but won in all three of his outings at Citi Field in 2017.

Hottest pitcher: Blake Snell, Rays (12-4, 2.09 ERA)

Tampa Bay has won five straight games to guarantee at least a .500 record at the All-Star break. The Rays pulled off a home sweep of the Tigers to improve to 14-1 in the past 15 contests at Tropicana Field. Now, Snell will look to keep his breakout season going in Thursday’s opener at Minnesota. The Rays’ southpaw has won four consecutive starts, while yielding a total of two runs in 28.2 innings of work and striking out 35 batters. Snell shut down the Twins at home earlier this season in a 10-1 rout as he tossed seven innings and allowed five hits.

Coldest pitcher: Nick Pivetta, Phillies (5-7, 4.62 ERA)

Back on May 16, Pivetta dominated the Orioles by scattering two hits in seven innings and striking out 11 in a 4-1 victory. Pivetta faces Baltimore again tonight in a make-up game at Camden Yards, but Philadelphia is 2-6 in the right-hander’s past eight starts dating back to late May. Pivetta was lit up by Washington on June 29 by allowing seven earned runs in less than two innings of work, then didn’t last past the third inning in a 17-5 victory over the Pirates last Friday. The Phillies seek the four-game season sweep of the Orioles after allowing four runs to Baltimore in the first three wins.

Biggest OVER run: Twins (4-1 last five)

Minnesota’s offense broke out after a slow start in Wednesday’s 8-5 victory over Kansas City to take two of three in the series. The Twins have taken advantage of a pair of last-place teams in the Royals and Orioles on this homestand by scoring five runs or more in five of seven games (6-1). Kyle Gibson has seen the OVER cash in his past two starts for Minnesota, while giving up 11 earned runs in his last three trips to the mound. Gibson looks for a better outing against Tampa Bay after getting knocked around for four runs in 6.1 innings of a 10-1 setback on April 21.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (5-0 last five)

Pittsburgh has bounced back from a five-game skid by winning three of the last four games. The Pirates avenged a four-game sweep by the Nationals earlier this season to capture two of three from Washington at PNC Park this week. Although the Pirates scored only three runs in the last two games, Pittsburgh allowed three runs in the two victories. Jameson Taillon takes the mound to begin a four-game home set with Milwaukee tonight, as the righty is winless in his past four starts at PNC Park. In two starts against the Brewers this season, Taillon has seen the UNDER cash each time, while giving up four runs in 10 innings of work.

Matchup to watch: Yankees vs. Indians

Cleveland busted out to a 2-0 series lead over New York in last season’s ALDS before the Yankees rallied for three consecutive wins to knock the Indians out of the playoffs. The Yankees continued their recent dominance of the Tribe in early May by pulling off a three-game sweep of Cleveland in the Bronx. New York continues its 11-game road trip after splitting a four-game set at Baltimore, but dropped series openers to the Blue Jays and Orioles.

The Indians bounced back after blowing a 4-0 lead in Tuesday’s 7-4 loss to the Reds by pounding Cincinnati last night, 19-4 to avoid a sweep. Corey Kluber didn’t allow a run in his last start against Oakland, but the Indians fell to the A’s, 6-3 as hefty -245 home favorites last Saturday. The Indians have won seven of the Cy Young winner’s 10 home starts this season, while Kluber tries to rebound from two horrific starts against the Yankees in last October’s ALDS (9 ER in 6.1 IP).

The Yankees counter with their ace in Luis Severino as the Bronx Bombers have posted an incredible 15-1 record in his last 16 starts. Severino is unbeaten at home this season, as both his losses came on the road against the Mets and Red Sox. The Yankees won two of Severino’s three starts against the Indians in 2017, including a 7-3 home victory in the ALDS.

Betcha didn’t know: The Dodgers have been up and down on their current road swing against the Angels and Padres. However, Los Angeles improved to 16-6 in its last 22 games away from Dodger Stadium with Wednesday’s 4-2 victory at San Diego. The Dodgers are 8-2 in Ross Stripling’s last 10 starts overall with both losses coming to the Cubs in this stretch. Stripling has performed well in two starts against the Padres this season by allowing one run in 10.2 innings of work, while striking out 15 batters.

            Biggest public favorite:
            Nationals (-200) at Mets

            Biggest public underdog
: Blue Jays (+155) at Red Sox

            Biggest line move:
Orioles (+105 to -105) vs. Phillies

              • A's stays hot, take 3 of 4 from Astros
                July 12, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Mookie Betts fouled off seven pitches before hitting a grand slam that helped the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 on Thursday night, extending their winning streak to 10 games.

Boston has the longest current winning streak in the big leagues and hasn't lost since getting routed 11-1 at Yankee Stadium on July 1. At 66-29, the Red Sox are 37 games over .500 for the first time since 1949.

David Price (10-6) struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings, and Craig Kimbrel earned his 29th save.

All-Star lefty J.A. Happ (10-6) started strong for Toronto, striking out six and holding Boston to two hits before running into trouble and some misfortune in the fourth.

                YANKEES 7, INDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Aaron Hicks drove home Didi Gregorius from first base with a one-out double in the eighth inning off Cleveland ace Corey Kluber, sending New York to a win over the Indians.

Hicks drove a 3-2 pitch from Kluber (12-5) to deep center field, and Gregorius scored easily when the ball one-hopped the wall.

Brett Gardner homered twice and Gregorius also connected for the Yankees, playing at Progressive Field for the first time since last October, when they overcame a 2-0 deficit and won the AL Division Series.

New York relievers Adam Warren, David Robertson (6-3), Dellin Betances and All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman combined for four hitless innings. Chapman got three outs for his 25th save - in his first appearance since Saturday because of a sore left knee.

                ATHLETICS 6, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Mark Canha hit a two-run single in a three-run eighth inning as surging Oakland defeated Houston.

Nick Martini had three hits and two RBIs for the Athletics, who improved to 19-5 in their last 24 games. They took three of four from the AL West-leading Astros.

Yusmeiro Petit (3-2) allowed one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and Lou Trivino worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Tony Kemp hit a two-run homer for Houston, and Alex Bregman also drove in two runs. Chris Devenski (2-2) got the loss.

                ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

DENVER (AP) - Gerardo Parra and Raimel Tapia had pinch-hit RBI singles in Colorado's three-run sixth inning.

Trevor Story homered for the Rockies, and Kyle Freeland pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning. Scott Oberg (3-0) got two outs for the win.

Colorado was coming off a 19-2 victory Wednesday night, but it trailed 1-0 before its rally in the sixth.

Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray (3-2) hit Carlos Gonzalez and walked Chris Iannetta with one out before he was replaced by Silvino Bracho, who was called up before the game. Parra then hit a tying single to right, and Tapia followed with another single off Andrew Chafin.

                NATIONALS 5, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Max Scherzer made a final pitch to start the All-Star Game on his own mound, Anthony Rendon hit two homers and Bryce Harper also connected, leading Washington over New York.

Washington won for just the sixth time in 17 games and nudged back over .500 at 47-46.

Scherzer (12-5) didn't dominate over his seven innings, but managed to tie Philadelphia's Aaron Nola for the NL lead in wins. He struck out five, boosting his league-leading total to 182. Ryan Madson closed for his fourth save.

Rendon hit a two-run homer off Steven Matz (4-7) in the first and added a solo drive in the third. His fourth career multihomer performance gave him six homers in 13 games.

                PIRATES 6, BREWERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jameson Taillon had a career-high 10 strikeouts, Jordy Mercer tied his career best with four RBIs and Pittsburgh defeated Milwaukee.

Taillon (6-7) surrendered one run on four hits with two walks. The right-hander struck out the side twice, once in the third inning and again in the fifth.

The Pirates have won four of their past five games to pull to 10 1/2 games back of the first-place Brewers, who have lost four of six, in the NL Central. Felipe Vazquez earned his 21st save by getting the final two outs.

Wade Miley (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits in five innings with five strikeouts and five walks for Milwaukee.

                PHILLIES 5, ORIOLES 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jorge Alfaro homered and drove in three runs, Nick Pivetta took a three-hitter into the seventh inning and Philadelphia beat Baltimore.

Making the most of a one-day stay in Baltimore, the Phillies got 12 hits off Kevin Gausman (4-7) while building a 5-0 lead against the team with the worst record in the majors. Alfaro, the No. 9 hitter, singled and scored in the third inning to help Philadelphia move a half-game ahead of second-place Atlanta in the NL East.

Pivetta (6-7) had a no-hitter through four innings and finished with seven strikeouts. The righty gave up three runs and five hits before being pulled with two outs in the seventh.

Seranthony Rodriguez worked the ninth for his ninth save.

                    ***********************************

Friday’s List of 13: Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!!!

                    13) Oakland A’s are 19-5 in their last 24 games, going 5-2 on this Cleveland/Houston road trip that just ended- they’re a contender for the Wild Card right now. A’s next six games are a pair of three-game series with their cross-bay rivals, the Giants. Interesting times.

                    12) Former NBA star Charles Oakley was arrested Sunday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board Enforcement Agents at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

TMZ reported that he is suspected of pulling back a $100 chip after he realized he was going to lose his wager; that is a Class B felony. Not good.

                    11) Milwaukee’s Jesus Aguilar, Seattle’s Juan Segura won the Final Vote and will be in Washington for next week’s All-Star Game.

Milwaukee is the smallest market in the major leagues; good for their fans for voting one of their guys into the Mid-Summer Classic.

                    10) Will Yoenis Cespedes return to the Mets as a first baseman? There are reports on the Interweb that Cespedes has suggested the position change to Mets brass.

Cespedes hasn’t played since May 13, by the way. People have come back from broken legs faster than this guy, and I’m not a Met fan nor is he on my fantasy team.

                    9) Mets have had nine games this season that were 0-0 after five innings; five of the nine were Jacob deGrom starts.

                    8) There are rumors the Manny Machado trade may be delayed util after the All-Star Game because Orioles’ brass doesn’t want Machado playing in the All-Star Game in Washington next week wearing another team’s uniform, which would also leave the Orioles without an All-Star.

                    7) Baseball oddity: Babe Ruth started his career as a pitcher for the Red Sox; the night he got his first win as a pitcher, he was actually pinch-hit for in the 7th inning.

Wonder how many times he was pinch-hit for in his entire career?

                    6) Arizona OF Daniel Descalso pitched in the 4th inning Wednesday night in Denver, the earliest any position player has pitched in a game since the Brewers’ Sal Bando on August 29, 1979 (also the 4th inning).

Descalso allowed a HR to Rockies pitcher German Marquez. It’s just the 2nd time in the last 50 years that a pitcher homered off a position player.

The other: June 23, 1986 – Giants’ Mike LaCoss homered off San Diego’s Dane Iorg.

                    5) Alex Bregman is only American Leaguer in Home Run Derby Monday night; unusual. MLB cannot be very happy that Trout, Judge, Stanton, Goldschmidt are not participating.

                    4) There’s a sportsbook opening Saturday at Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey, next to Giants Stadium. Maybe the jackass politicians in New York can figure out a way to have legalized wagering in our state- why was New Jersey so far ahead of them????

                    3) Baseball doings:
                    — Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers goes on DL with left shoulder inflammation.
                    — Angels’ P Garrett Richards (elbow) hopes to return in 2020.
                    — Twins put 1B Logan Morrison (hip) on the DL

                    2) FOX is apparently in negotiations with Jeff Fisher to hire the former Titans/Rams coach as an NFL commentator. You never know how good guys will be behind the mike, but I’ll be curious to hear what he has to say.

                    1) Even a former White House stenographer named Beck Dorey-Stein has written a book about her time working in the White House. The current political climate has been good for bookstores, if not for the rest of us.

                    • LEADING OFF: Red Sox on a roll, Syndergaard returns
                      July 13, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors on Friday:

                      HEAVEN 11

Mookie Betts and the rolling Boston Red Sox try to win their 11th consecutive game when they host Toronto again at Fenway Park. Betts, who leads the majors with a .352 batting average, had a grand slam and five RBIs in Thursday night's 6-4 victory. Boston owns the longest current winning streak in the big leagues and hasn't lost since getting routed July 1 at Yankee Stadium. At 66-29, the major league-leading Red Sox are 37 games over .500 for the first time since 1949. Rick Porcello (11-3, 3.58 ERA) starts for Boston against rookie left-hander Ryan Borucki (0-1, 2.25).

                      BACK IN BUSINESS

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 3.06 ERA) comes off the disabled list to make his first big league start since May 25. The 2016 All-Star has been sidelined by a strained ligament in his right index finger. On the mound for the Nationals is Tanner Roark (3-11, 4.76), who is tied for the major league lead in losses. He got no-decisions in two previous starts vs. the Mets this season.

                      DARK KNIGHT RISING

Matt Harvey wanted nothing more than to prove he could still pitch at a high level when he was traded from the New York Mets to Cincinnati in May. Since the deal, the right-hander has lowered his ERA from 7.00 to 4.48 - and allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts. Harvey will try to continue his recent surge when he pitches for the Reds as they open a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals, who send right-hander Carlos Martinez (6-4, 3.05) to the mound.

                      OUTSTANDING OAKLAND

The Oakland Athletics own the best record in the majors over their last 24 games, going 19-5 during that stretch and climbing to 12 games over .500 (53-41). Oakland finished off a series against defending World Series champion Houston on Thursday with a victory, giving the A's three wins out of four games, and they'll open an interleague series at San Francisco. Edwin Jackson (1-0, 2.45 ERA) starts against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (2-3, 3.09).

                      BUEHLER'S BACK

Prized rookie Walker Buehler returns to the Los Angeles Dodgers' rotation at home against the Angels. Buehler (4-2) made his last big league start on June 8 and has made only one awful relief appearance since then because of a rib injury. He allowed five runs in that outing against the Chicago Cubs two weeks ago, raising his ERA from 2.63 to 3.44, but he's now healthy and has Dodgers manager Dave Roberts considering a six-man rotation to begin the second half.

                              Tony Mejia

Hottest team: Red Sox (10-0, +1065 last 10)

Boston has added to baseball’s best record by winning 15 of 17 contests, holding on in the series opener against Toronto after Mookie Betts’ delivered a fourth-inning grand slam off lefty J.A. Happ. The Red Sox have won eight of 10 against the Jays, winning six straight. They’ve won eight consecutive contests at Fenway Park by a combined margin of 50-19 and have a league-best 32-12 home mark.

Rick Porcello (11-3, 3.58) is 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA against Toronto this season but has just a 4-2 record in Boston while winning seven of eight road decisions. The Sox are the second-heaviest favorite (-210) on Friday's schedule, taking aim at 24-year-old rookie Ryan Borucki (0-1, 2.25), who has stared down the Astros, Tigers and Yankees and lived to tell about it. Toronto's offense has managed to produce just three runs of support on his behalf thus far.

                              Coldest team: Royals (1-11, -950 last 12)

You know Kansas City is in a terrible place to be listed as an underdog in a game involving James Shields (3-10, 4.53), who is likely to end up elsewhere following the trade deadline. The Royals were favored (-132) in the season opener against Shields, losing 14-7. Chicago has been expected to win only one of his 20 starts prior to Friday’s matchup at Comiskey.

Kansas City has been an underdog in 18 straight and are +110 with rookie Brad Keller (2-3, 2.52) on the mound and has matched its highest two-game run total since May 9-10 in splitting its last two games at the Twins.

Hottest pitcher: Dallas Keuchel, Astros (6-8, 3.95 ERA)

In a battle of former teammates, Houston's standout lefty squares off against Mike Fiers (6-5, 3.65), who will face his former team for the first time since winning a ring last fall. The Astros have won five of Keuchel's last six starts, seeing him allow two or fewer earned runs in four of those outings to drop his ERA under 4.00 for the first time since late May. Fiers could have easily been plugged into this category since the Tigers have won seven of his last nine starts, allowing one run or fewer five times over the past six weeks.

Coldest pitcher: Tanner Roark, Nationals (3-11, 4.76 ERA)

Through two starts this month, Roark has an ERA of 10.64, hitting rock bottom in allowing 13 runs on 20 hits in 11 frames. Washington has only won one of his last nine starts and has failed to get out of the fifth inning in three of his last five outings. The Nats dropped both April meetings that Roark started against the Mets despite him winding up with a pair of no-decisions. Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 3.06) will make his return to the bigs for the first time since May 25 after overcoming a ligament strain in his finger. He allowed one run over five innings at Class-A Brooklyn on Sunday.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (11-4-1 last 16)

After Milwaukee rode solid starting pitching and its tremendous bullpen to a run of 'unders' to open June, things have turned. The Brew Crew plated two in the ninth inning to help deliver the 'over' in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh but have now dropped three of four as their lead over the Cubs has slipped to just a half-game. This series against the Pirates will feature five games with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday. This second contest will be a rematch of a May 4 pitching matchup between Junior Guerra and Nick Kingham that produced a 6-4 Bucs win after they touched up Guerra for a season-high five runs. The total has been set at 8.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (21-6-1 last 28)

Tampa Bay managed only a single run in Minneapolis against Kirk Gibson and has now seen the low-side come in three straight times, continuing a stretch where most of their games have failed to surpass the posted total. The 'under' is 11-3-1 over the last 15 Twins games after this four-game set got started with a 5-1 win. Former first-round pick Jake Odorizzi (4-6, 4.28), who has made most of his career starts for Tampa Bay, will square off against his former team for the first time and has struck out 22 batters over the last 17 innings, surrendering just two runs. Nathan Eovaldi (3-3, 3.35) has allowed only one hit in two of his last three starts, giving up just two runs over 19 innings, striking out 23. The total has been set at 8.5.

Matchup to watch: Angels at Dodgers

When L.A.’s baseball teams last got together, way back on Sunday, the Angels pulled out a second one-run win in a “Freeway Series” that started frustratingly for the Dodgers when two throwing errors helped seal Kenley Jansen’s third blown save of the season.

Between winning the middle game of the series and taking three of four from the Padres after hanging on for a 3-2 victory on Thursday, the Dodgers took the lead in the NL West for the first time all season, pulling a half-game up on Arizona, which lost in Colorado. Jensen saved his third straight game since faltering last Friday to help L.A move to 8-3 this month. They’ve won 35 of 52 games since May 24 and own the NL’s top winning percentage (.676) since June 1 to help overcome their rough start.

While the Angels have been decimated by injuries, they took two of three against Seattle and are under pressure to make their move now since they’re currently in a stretch where they’re playing 19 consecutive games in Southern California. The Halos are 13 games behind Houston in the AL West but will play 28 or 34 games in-state between now and Aug. 15 and pulled within 10 games of the Mariners thanks to Thursday’s 11-2 rout.

Albert Pujols hit home runs No. 629 and 630 against Seattle to tie Ken Griffey, Jr. for sixth place all-time and 24-year-old rookie David Fletcher went deep for the first time to help the Angels win their third series in four matchups, helping them get back over .500. after finishing off a stretch of losses in eight of 10 games by dropping July’s first two contests.

Dominican righty Felix Pena will make his fifth career start and has seen the Angels win three of four since he joined the rotation. He hasn’t escaped the sixth inning once but has given up a single home run in 19.2 innings and has a 25-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. 23-year-old Walker Buehler (4-2, 3.44) returns from the disabled list for L.A. after being shelved with a rib microfracture after allowing five runs in one inning at Chavez Ravine on June 28. It’s unclear whether he’ll face a pitch count here but the Dodgers are optimistic he’s ready to return.

                              Betcha didn’t know:
The A's haven't tasted a loss in an Edwin Jackson (1-0, 2.45) start since becoming the 13th different team to employ him, tying an MLB record. It's going to be tough to pass Octavio Dotel if Oakland doesn't move him, which isn't likely given the return they're getting. In 18.1 innings over three starts, he's struck out 16 hitters and participated in a pair of wins over the Indians, the most recent coming in a game where he started opposite Corey Kluber. Madison Bumgarner (2-3, 3.09) is the opponent tonight and is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA at home thus far this season. He's 9-9 in interleague play and will be looking to pitch San Francisco to its 50th win of the season.

                              Biggest public favorite:
                              Astros (-260) vs. Tigers

                              Biggest public underdog:
                              Diamondbacks (+130) at Braves

                              Biggest line move:
Red Sox (-205 to -220) vs. Blue Jays
