      STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS
      [I]
Streaking: Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (1-2, 2.51 ERA, $-204)

Bumgarner got off to a rough start in his return from injury but has turned things around in a big way, posting almost identical gems against San Diego (8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) and Colorado (7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) to move closer to the break-even point from a profit perspective. He has also been a great under play, with the Giants going below the total in four of his five starts.

Pitching at Coors Field is a much different adventure than toeing the rubber at AT&T Park, but Bumgarner is still a good play at -129 against the host Rockies; just don't expect another shutout performance in this one.
      [I]
Slumping: Kyle Gibson, Minnesota Twins (2-6, 3.48 ERA, $-275)

The good times have come to an end for Gibson, who was a terrific value play early in the season but has seen the Twins drop six of his previous eight starts – with five of those defeats coming as the favorite. Gibson is on the periphery of becoming one of the 50 worst qualified pitchers in baseball with regard to value, and still hasn't won a home start this season.

While Gibson has been much better on the road (2-2. 2.60 ERA) than at home (0-4, 4.53), he still isn't a recommended play at +127 against Brent Suter and the host Milwaukee Brewers.

      • LEADING OFF: Will July be a hit or miss for MLB batters?
        July 1, 2018

Here's a look at what's happening around the majors today:

        SWING OR MISS?

Many hitters got off to a smashing start in July as Cleveland socked 11 doubles, Baltimore homered four times and the Cubs combined with Minnesota for 21 runs at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Now, we'll see if the trend continues as the weather heats up and the balls fly.

June marked the second time in three months that strikeouts exceeded hits in the major leagues, a pattern that had never occurred until this year. About halfway through the season, there had been 21,090 strikeouts and 20,671 hits.

        SLAMMIN'

The Reds try to keep socking grand slams when the White Sox come to Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati leads the majors with nine slams and has already tied the single-season franchise record set in 2002.

Jose Peraza hit one Sunday, and pitchers Mike Lorenzen and Anthony DeSclafani recently connected. Eight different Reds have hit grand slams - Adam Duvall is the only player with two.

James Shields, who twice has led the league in homers allowed, starts for Chicago.

        MOTOWN MEMORIES

Washington ace Max Scherzer (10-4, 2.04 ERA) will face ex-Detroit teammate Rick Porcello (9-3, 3.60 ERA) in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners when the Boston Red Sox visit Nationals Park.

        HE'S BACK

Shortstop Jorge Polanco is set to rejoin the Twins after serving an 80-game drug suspension. He went 8 for 19 in six rehab games at Triple-A and Class A, and will report to the big league club for the series opener at Milwaukee. The 24-year-old Polanco was a key contributor last season when the Twins earned an AL wild-card spot.

        SEATTLE SLOW

The Mariners plan to monitor Felix Hernandez and his back stiffness over the next few days. Hernandez pitched five innings Saturday night and earned the victory over Kansas City, but struggled with back pain and wasn't able to sit down in the dugout between innings. The six-time All-Star is 8-6 with a 5.11 ERA in 18 starts this season.

        • AL East, AL West races in rarified air so far
          July 2, 2018

Since divisional play began in 1969, only three times has a division had two teams with at least 100 wins.

That could happen again this year in the AL East - and maybe the AL West as well.

The Yankees, Red Sox, Astros and Mariners are all on pace to win over 100 games, and they've created tight races atop those two divisions. With two wild cards in each league, those four teams have some breathing room in the race for the postseason, but there should be plenty of incentive to win the division title and avoid the one-game, winner-take-all scenario that the wild cards have to deal with.

The Yankees and Red Sox just played a three-game series in New York. The games weren't all that suspenseful - they ended 8-1, 11-0 and 11-1, with the Yankees winning two of three.

The first time two teams from one division won at least 100 games was in 1980, when the Yankees (103-59) outlasted the Orioles (100-62) atop the AL East. A seven-game winning streak in mid-September helped New York hold on.

In 1993, the last year before the wild card, the Braves (104-58) and Giants (103-59) dueled all the way to the final day before San Francisco was done in by a 12-1 loss to the rival Dodgers. Atlanta was 10 games out on the morning of July 23 but went 49-16 the rest of the way.

The only time in the six-division era that a 100-win team failed to finish first was when Oakland went 102-60 in 2001 and still ended up 14 games behind a 116-win Seattle team.

None of the teams involved in those three previous examples made it to the World Series, so consider that a word of caution to this year's American League behemoths.

Some other developments around the majors:

          SHORTER WAITS

If the Mariners make the postseason this year, it will be their first appearance since that remarkable 2001 season. Baseball's next-longest drought belongs to the Marlins, who haven't made it since winning the World Series as a wild card in 2003.

The addition of extra wild cards has made it easier for teams to avoid long stretches without a postseason berth. The Padres haven't made it since 2006 and the White Sox haven't been in since 2008. Aside from those two teams, the Marlins and the Mariners, every major league franchise has made the postseason at least once since 2011.

          HIGHLIGHT

The outfield wall in Toronto is high enough that it doesn't lend itself to home run-robbing catches. Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Pillar figured out a solution, however, planting a foot on the wall and using it to vault himself up while making a catch on a drive by Detroit's Nicholas Castellanos. Even Castellanos applauded that catch Sunday.

          LINES OF THE WEEK

Two from the Red Sox-Yankees series: Chris Sale allowed one hit in seven innings, striking out 11 in Boston's 11-0 win Saturday night. The following evening, it was New York delivering an 11-1 blowout. Aaron Hicks hit three home runs for the Yankees in that game.

Sale has a 1.73 career ERA against the Yankees, best among pitchers with at least 10 starts against them since 1920. But Sunday's six-homer barrage brought New York's season total to 137, a franchise record for before the All-Star break.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodger Stadium has not been much of a home field advantage this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as they don’t even have a winning record this season at home. They are still listed as the favorite on Monday night on MLB Network against a Pittsburgh Pirates team going nowhere. The Pirates are below .500 and in fourth place in the NL Central, while the Dodgers are battling for second place in the NL West.

The probable pitching matchup for Monday has Nick Kingham going against Alex Wood.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
Date and Time: Monday, July 2, 2018, 10:10 p.m. ET
Location: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
            MLB Odds : Dodgers -170, O/U 7.5
Probable Pitchers: Nick Kingham vs. Alex Wood
            TV Coverage: MLB Network

The Pirates haven’t been that bad on the road, as they are 19-22, with 20 games going over the total, 18 going under, with three pushes. They are averaging just about 4.4 runs per game and giving up 4.2 per contest.

The Dodgers are 23-23 at home, with 21 games going over, 23 going under the total, with two pushes. They are averaging about 4.6 runs per game and giving up just 3.6 per contest.

            Starting Pitchers

The Pirates are expected to call up Nick Kingham from Triple-A Indianapolis for this start on Monday night. He has not pitched for the Pirates since early June, but he was decent when he did get the chance earlier this season, as he went 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in six starts. There could be a bit of a concern about too much time off for Kingham, as he last pitched in Triple A on June 25, meaning he comes into this game with six days of rest.

Alex Wood is 4-5 on the season with a 4.00 ERA. He has actually been solid lately, with a 3-0 record and a 2.45 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up just two earned runs in seven innings last time out in a win over the Cubs. Wood faced the Pirates twice last season and the Dodgers won both games and both games went over the total.

            Key Stats

The Pirates are 14-37 in the last 51 meetings in Los Angeles. The Pirates are 4-1 in their last 5 series openers. The Pirates are 18-42 in their last 60 road games vs. a team with a winning record. The Pirates are 7-19 in their last 26 road games vs. a left-handed starter. The Pirates are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. the National League West. The Dodgers are 10-1 in their last 11 series openers. The Dodgers are 8-3 in their last 11 vs. a team with a losing record. The Dodgers are 14-6 in Wood’s last 20 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Over is 6-2 in the Pirates last 8 road games. The Under is 5-2 in the Pirates last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 7-3 in the Dodgers last 10 home games. The Over is 4-1 in Wood’s last 5 home starts.

            Pirates vs. Dodgers Picks

This may not be the automatic win for the Dodgers that it looks to be on paper. Kingham has actually pitched really well for the Pirates this season. It is a bit surprising he was sent back down to Triple A last month because his numbers are good. He has thrown 35.1 innings and allowed just 28 hits. He has walked just seven and struck out 35. It also doesn’t help that the Dodgers haven’t been anything special at home this season. I lean a little bit toward Pittsburgh in this contest, but I think the better choice is to play the game under the total.

Kingham has pitched well and Wood is on a very nice run right now for the Dodgers, plus the Dodgers have been going under at home. I will go under the total on Monday night.

Pirates vs. Dodgers Pick: Under the total
Pirates vs. Dodgers Score Prediction: Pirates 4, Dodgers 3

                • Porcello helps Red Sox beat Scherzer, Nationals 4-3
                  July 2, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Rick Porcello hit a three-run double off former teammate Max Scherzer and pitched six effective innings, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

Porcello got his first career extra-base hit came in the second inning on a 0-2 pitch after the Nationals intentionally walked Jackie Bradley Jr. Porcello drove Scherzer's 96-mph fastball over the head of Juan Soto in left center for his first RBIs since 2009.

Scherzer and Porcello were teammates for five seasons with the Detroit Tigers.

Porcello (10-3) allowed two runs and seven hits. Craig Kimbrel got four outs for his 25th save.

Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Daniel Murphy homered for the Nationals. Scherzer (10-5) struck out nine in six innings.

                  BRAVES 5, YANKEES 3, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning that nicked the glove of a leaping Aaron Judge in right field, and the Braves beat the Yankees in a matchup of two of baseball's best teams.

Johan Camargo homered early and Jesse Biddle (2-0) pitched out of a late jam for the NL East leaders, who earned their fourth consecutive victory. A.J. Minter got three outs for his fourth save.

The 20-year-old Acuna also doubled and drove in three runs, four years to the day after the touted rookie signed with the Braves (49-34).

Judge hit his 23rd homer for the Yankees (54-28), and second in two nights. David Robertson (5-3) got the loss.

                  INDIANS 9, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Francisco Lindor homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, powering Cleveland to the road win.

Indians ace Corey Kluber (12-4), who failed to make it out of the second inning in his previous start at St. Louis, allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.

Lindor belted a grand slam in the fourth and a three-run shot in the sixth.

Whit Merrifield homered on Kluber's third pitch for his fourth career leadoff home run. Kansas City has lost 23 of their last 28 games.

Royals right-hander Jakob Junis (5-10) was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

                  CARDINALS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Yadier Molina homered, Carlos Martinez pitched six effective innings and the Cardinals ended a four-game losing streak.

Molina hit a two-run single in the Cardinals' four-run first inning against Robbie Ray (3-1) and hit his 12th homer off the left-hander in the sixth.

Jedd Gyorko also homered and had two RBIs to end Ray's nine-game winning streak, dating to last season.

Martinez (5-4) allowed two runs and six hits. Bud Norris worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Paul Goldschmidt had four hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have lost four straight.

                  ROCKIES 5, GIANTS 2

DENVER (AP) - Kyle Freeland turned in another sizzling start at Coors Field and Colorado scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a throwing error by shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Freeland (8-6) settled in to go seven strong innings after surrendering a homer to Gorkys Hernandez on the first pitch of the game. It was Freeland's 12th quality start of the season.

Wade Davis worked his way around a one-out double by Buster Posey in the ninth for his 24th save. He struck out Crawford to end the game.

San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner (1-3) was charged with three runs, two earned, and seven hits in six-plus innings.

                  BREWERS 6, TWINS 5, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brad Miller drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning, sending Milwaukee to the win.

Nate Orf, playing in his first major league game, was hit by a pitch from Zack Littell (0-2) leading off the 10th. Manny Pina followed with a single and Keon Broxton walked.

Hernan Perez then bounced into a fielder's choice before Miller's walk ended the game.

Corey Knebel (2-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the Brewers, who trailed 5-1 after Robbie Grossman hit his first career grand slam in the fifth.

                  MARLINS 3, RAYS 2, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) - Yadiel Rivera's infield hit in the 10th inning scored Brian Anderson, lifting Miami to the victory.

Anderson walked against Ryne Stanek (1-2) and took third on a single by J.T. Realmuto. Rivera, who entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth, then pulled a one-hopper up the line.

Third baseman Matt Duffy backhanded the ball and double-clutched in foul territory before making a wild throw home, but the play was ruled a hit.

Tampa Bay has lost 21 one-run games, most in the majors.

Drew Rucinski (3-1) pitched a perfect 10th for the win.

                  REDS 5, WHITE SOX 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Alex Blandino's double in the eighth inning completed Cincinnati's four-run rally.

The Reds loaded the bases with one out against Chris Volstad (1-5). Adam Duvall grounded to first baseman Matt Davidson, who was indecisive. He took several steps toward first before throwing home too late to get Scooter Gennett scoring from third base.

Billy Hamilton followed with a sacrifice fly that tied it at 3, and Blandino's pinch-hit double put the Reds in position for another comeback win. They've trailed in seven of their last 10 victories.

Dylan Floro (3-2) retired two in the eighth. Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances.

                  TIGERS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Jose Iglesias hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Tigers earned their second straight victory following a season-long 11-game losing streak.

Niko Goodrum tripled off Seunghwan Oh (4-3) with one out and scored the winning run when Iglesias followed with a fly ball to right.

Jeimer Candelario had three hits for the Tigers, who won the season series against the Blue Jays for the first time since 2013. Joe Jimenez (4-1) got the win despite giving up the tying run in the ninth.

After Buck Farmer gave up a leadoff single in the 10th, Blaine Hardy finished for his first career save.

Teoscar Hernandez had two hits for Toronto and drove in a run. Ryan Borucki allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                    13) Los Angeles Lakers signed Rajan Rondo, JaVale McGee, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lance Stephenson this week; people are really excited about the Lakers again.

Oh yeah, Lebron James took $153.5M from LA to play for the next four years.

Golden State signed big man DeMarcus Cousins, who is coming off an achilles injury, and may not be ready to start the regular season.

                    12) David Price has started twice against New York this season: he’s pitched total of 4.1 innings, faced 27 batters, 12 of whom scored. NY won the two games, 10-7, 11-1.

                    11) Orioles went 6-20 in June; 6-5 against the National League, 0-15 vs AL teams. Oy.

                    10) Toronto CF Kevin Pillar made one of the best catches ever over the weekend, robbing Nick Castellanos of a home run, climbing the CF wall— just a tremendous play.

                    9) Big 14 vs Pac-12 in football last year: 5-2 SU, 7-0 vs spread; only losses were Nebraska (+13) losing 42-35 at Oregon, Rutgers (+28) losing at home to Washington, 30-14.

Since 2013, Big 14 teams are 22-10-1 vs spread when playing Pac-12 teams.

                    8) James Franklin is the new starting QB for the Toronto Argonauts, replacing the injured Ricky Ray, who is probably done for the season.

                    7) Celtics drafted Robert Williams from Texas A&M, who was said to have maturity issues. First, he overslept and missed his conference call with the Boston media. Then he missed his flight and didn’t get to the Celtics’ first summer league practice. No bueno.

                    6) Cubs scored 10+ runs in four consecutive games for first time since they did it in five straight games…….in 1930.

                    5) Julius Randle gets $18M for two years from the New Orleans Pelicans. NBA Summer League starts this week, with the Las Vegas Summer League starting Friday.

Seth Curry gets $2.75M for this season from the Trailblazers, with a player option for a second season in Portland.

                    4) From Shane Bacon: “Ernie Els changes to a new golf ball after every birdie so he always carries 18 balls in his bag in case he birdies every hole.”

                    3) Houston Astros signed 14 international free agents Monday, including eight players from the Dominican Republic, five from Venezuela and one from Cuba.

Some teams do way better than others with international signings; Astros are good at it.

                    2) I’m typing this at 7:40 pm; in his first 11 minutes as a pro in the Utah Summer League, Trae Young was 0-8 from the floor, 2-4 on foul line. His first two 3-pointers were air balls.

July has to be rude awakening for lot of these kids who leave college (too) early and now are competing against grown men, with millions of dollars at stake.

8:45: Young wound up going 4-20 from the floor, 1-11 on the arc, scoring 16 points in a 103-88 loss to Memphis.

                    1) This, from pitching great Jim Kaat:

“Another big change in the strategy of today’s game evident in Nats/RedSox game..Cy Young award pitchers would never be asked to walk the #8 hitter in the 2nd inning..they would go after the #8 hitter so they’d have the pitcher leading. off. They’re Cy Young award winners!”

                        • LEADING OFF: Kershaw tries again for win, Realmuto on a roll
                          July 3, 2018

Here's a look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

                          RECOVERING ACE

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw goes for his first win in 2 1/2 months when he faces Pittsburgh in the middle game of the teams' three-game series in Los Angeles. Kershaw (1-4, 2.84 ERA) has no decisions with a 2.77 ERA in three starts since going on the disabled list in early May with biceps tendinitis. He returned to start against Philadelphia on May 31, but then went right back on the DL with a lower back injury. Kershaw, whose only win this season was against Arizona on April 15, gave up one run and four hits with no walks and six strikeouts in five innings against Chicago in his second start back last Thursday.

                          REALMUTO ON A ROLL

Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto looks to get a base hit in his 11th straight game as Miami continues its interleague series against Tampa Bay. He is 15 for 42 (.357 average) with two homers and 10 RBIs over his last 10 contests, a stretch broken up by him sitting out four straight games last week. Realmuto is hitting .311 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs on the season.

                          BIEBERMANIA

Cleveland rookie right-hander Shane Bieber looks to remain unbeaten as he faces the struggling Royals. The 23-year-old is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts since making his major league debut against Minnesota on May 31. Kansas City has lost 23 of its last 28 games and is tied with Baltimore for the most losses in the majors with 54. The Royals have scored four runs or fewer in 23 of their last 24 games.

                          THROWING SIX

Michael Fulmer (3-7, 4.20 ERA) tries to extend the Detroit's streak of starters working at least six innings to seven games in the opener of a two-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Tigers' current stretch of sidx straight is the team's longest since last July 28 to Aug. 2.

                          STRUGGLING

Chris Davis looks to keep up his recent hitting surge as the Baltimore Orioles open a two-game series at Philadelphia. Davis is 5 for 20 with two homers and four RBIs in his last five games. Since sitting out a stretch of 10 of 12 games last month to try to snap out a season-long hitting funk, he is 7 for 38 with three HRs and nine RBIs over the last 10 games. That has improved his totals to a .156 average with seven homers and 24 RBIs while striking out 99 times.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

They employ tutors to help the new players with their English; has to be hard living in a new country, where you don’t know the language.
