      STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

      Streaking:
Mike Leake, Seattle Mariners (5-4, 4.29 ERA, $906)

A quick look at the major-league run support leaders and it's easy to see why the Mariners are a red-hot 12-4 in Leake's starts. He receives 5.56 runs per game, the eighth-best mark in baseball. But let's be fair to the veteran right-hander, who has asserted himself well by putting together a stretch of six quality starts over his previous seven appearances.

With Leake streaking and the Mariners' offense humming, he represents a great play at -155 against lowly Baltimore.

      Slumping:
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (1-4, 2.94 ERA, $-1,038)

Well, this is awkward. After years of robot-like consistency and Pedro-like dominance, bettors can no longer rely on Kershaw to provide immediate profit. At least, not at the moment. The Dodgers have won just three of his nine starts on the season and when you're a ridiculously heavy favorite the majority of the time, that record just won't cut it.

Kershaw is always a threat to put up a long string of zeroes, but as he continues to work his way back into peak form, -180 is simply too steep against a Chicago Cubs team that is still pretty good.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Lance McCullers pitched seven strong innings, Jake Marisnick homered and the Houston Astros beat the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Thursday night to tie a franchise record with their 11th straight road win.

McCullers (9-3) gave up three hits while striking out seven. The Astros have won his last six starts and have won 18 of 21 overall. Their 11th straight road win matched the club record set last May 14-June 5 on the way to winning the franchise's first World Series title.

The Rays, who had won five straight overall and eight straight at home, had runners on first and third with none out in the eighth against reliever Chris Devenski, but Matt Duffy lined into a double play and Jake Bauers grounded out.

Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven opportunities.

Marisnick's homer in the fifth came off Ryan Yarbrough (7-4) and was his seventh of the season. It ended the Rays' streak of 26 scoreless innings, the second-longest in franchise history.

          RED SOX 4, ANGELS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer and Rafael Devers had a solo shot to help Boston beat Los Angeles.

Boston completed a season sweep of the Angels for the first time since they joined the American League as an expansion club in 1961.

The Red Sox have won four straight and six of seven as they head to New York to open three-game series between the rivals on Friday night with first place in the AL East on the line.

Hector Velazquez (6-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Craig Kimbrel earned his 24th save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Andrelton Simmons hit a solo homer and Albert Pujols had an RBI single for the Angels, who have lost six straight. Los Angeles was up 1-0 until Devers led off the fifth with his 13th homer, to center off of Jamie Barria (5-4).

          DODGERS 11, CUBS 5

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Anthony Rizzo's three-run double and Addison Russell's two-run homer highlighted a seven-run seventh inning as Chicago broke loose after Los Angeles starter Clayton Kershaw exited.

The Cubs pounded out 15 hits, including four by Rizzo. Russell drove in four runs in the final regular-season meeting between the teams that played each other in the NL Championship Series the last two years.

They met seven times in 10 days, with the Cubs winning four games over the two series.

The Dodgers staked Kershaw to a 3-1 lead before he departed after five innings because of a pitch limit.

The Cubs jumped on reliever Walker Buehler (4-2), who arrived earlier in the morning from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he had been set for a rehab assignment. Albert Almora Jr. homered on Buehler's second pitch and Russell's sacrifice fly tied it at 3 in the sixth.

Steve Cishek (2-0) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief.

          ROCKIES 9, GIANTS 8

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and set a career best with five RBIs, rallying Colorado past San Francisco.

Nolan Arenado hit his 19th home run, tying him for the NL lead with Washington's Bryce Harper. Trevor Story added three hits for Colorado, which had lost four straight at San Francisco.

The Rockies blew leads of 5-2 and 7-5 and were down 8-7 before scoring twice off closer Sam Dyson (2-2) to avoid a series sweep.

Adam Ottavino (4-1) gave up two runs but retired three batters to win. Wade Davis pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.

          DIAMONDBACKS 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched seven innings and was an offensive dynamo, too, helping Arizona beat Miami.

Greinke singled twice, drove in a run, stole a base and scored. He leads Arizona pitchers this year with four RBIs and four runs, raised his season average to .300, and is now 7 for 7 lifetime in steal attempts.

As for pitching, Greinke (8-5) won for the fifth time in his past six starts.

Paul Goldschmidt continued his recent tear with three hits, and Nick Ahmed added two hits. Each scored and drove in a run.

Trevor Richards (2-5) allowed three runs in four innings. Miami rookie Brian Anderson went 0 for 4 to end his 24-game on-base streak, which had been the longest active string in the National League.

          PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola pitched into the eighth inning to win his 10th game of the season, Rhys Hoskins homered again and Philadelphia started a pivotal division series by beating Washington.

Hoskins hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning for his 13th home run of the year and a 4-1 lead that propelled the Phillies within two games of idle Atlanta for first place the NL East. Both the Phillies and Nationals entered this four-game set within striking distance of the Braves.

Nola (10-2) struck out eight and walked only two over 114 pitches and 7 2/3 innings. He has won seven straight decisions at home dating to last season.

Tommy Hunter allowed two runs in the ninth before Seranthony Dominguez got the final two outs for his sixth save.

Tanner Roark (3-9) struck out five over seven innings for the Nationals, who fell to 4-12 since June 9.

          BREWERS 6, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eric Thames hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and Milwaukee slowed Cincinnati's best surge of the season.

The game included a benches-clearing incident in the third inning as Cincinnati's Joey Votto exchanged words with Brewers catcher Erik Kratz.

Thames gave the Brewers a 5-4 lead when he homered in the seventh inning off reliever Amir Garrett (0-1).

Eric Sogard added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Junior Guerra (4-5) gave up Jose Peraza's second career leadoff homer and Jesse Winker's two-run shot while getting his first victory since May 14. Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

The last-place Reds were the hottest team in the NL Central heading into the game, winning nine of their last 10 games.

          MARINERS 4, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Nelson Cruz homered and drove in three runs, and Seattle utilized two errors in the 10th inning to complete their first four-game sweep at Baltimore in franchise history.

The Mariners improved to 8-0 in extra innings this season. They prevailed in 11 innings on Wednesday, and won the four games at Camden Yards by a total of six runs.

Manny Machado and Chris Davis hit solo homers for Baltimore.

Dee Gordon beat out an infield hit off Miguel Castro (2-4) in the 10th and scored when center fielder Colby Rasmus bobbled Jean Segura's single. A throwing error by third baseman Steve Wilkerson and an RBI single by Cruz followed.

Juan Nicasio got three straight outs in the 10th for his first save.

James Pazos (2-1) worked the ninth for Seattle.

          ATHLETICS 4, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Jed Lowrie had two more hits, Sean Manaea pitched six strong innings and Oakland beat Detroit to sweep the four-game series.

Lowrie went 9 for 17 (.529) with two homers and three doubles in the set, driving in at least one run in all four games.

The A's went 8-2 on their three-city road trip and have won 10 of 12 overall.

Detroit lost its ninth straight. The Tigers haven't lost 10 in a row since their 119-loss season in 2003.

Manaea (8-6) won his third straight start, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk.

Michael Fulmer (3-7) gave four runs and nine hits. He is 1-3 in his past six starts.

          TWINS 2, WHITE SOX 1, 13 INNINGS

CHICAGO (AP) - Max Kepler drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded in the 13th inning to push Minnesota past Chicago.

The Twins pushed across the go-ahead run after Logan Morrison doubled off left fielder Charlie Tilson's glove with two outs. Hector Santiago (2-3), the sixth White Sox reliever, intentionally walked Ehire Adrianza before walking Jake Cave and Kepler.

Alan Busenitz (2-0), the Twins' sixth reliever, pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win.

Minnesota bounced back after the White Sox tied it with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when closer Fernando Rodney walked pinch-hitter Daniel Palka on four pitches to force in a run.

              ****************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

              13) Jeez, some people are never satisfied; there was an article on the Interweb this week, criticizing John Calipari because he’s only won one national title in his coaching career.

He’s been a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament six times, made the Final Four four of those six years, lost in the Elite Eight the other two years. He made the Final Four three times from UMass/Memphis; how have those teams done since he left?

              12) In 2014, he led Kentucky to the national title game as a freakin’ #8-seed, and some jackass is criticizing him? Wow.

              11) 55 of 351 Division I basketball jobs changed hands since the end of last season; former LSU coach Johnny Jones is the new coach at Texas Southern, replacing Mike Davis, who moved on to Detroit. Texas Southern played every non-conference game on the road last year, so Jones ain’t going to have much fun between Veterans’ Day and Christmas.

              10) Was watching the 1993 movie The Firm the other night; last time I saw it was in a theater 25 years ago. What a great cast this movie has:

              — Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, Wilford Brimley
              — Ed Harris, Holly Hunter and Gary Busey
              — Terry Kinney and David Strathairn, who are both in Billions now, 25 years later.
              — Paul Sorvino and Steven Hill, the original DA on Law and Order.

              9) The Firm was the first of the John Grisham books that was turned into a movie. I’ve read most of his books but not all of them. Usually try to read one on the Albany/Las Vegas flights on my vacations. Think The Rooster Bar is next one I’ll read.

              8) NHL star John Tavares is a free agent; if he signs for $11M/year, it would be worth, after taxes, $5.9M/year in Dallas and Tampa, $5.2M in NYC, $4.8M/year in San Jose and $4.5M/year in Toronto.

You wonder how often stuff like that comes into play in free agent decisions.

              7) Wendell Carter got picked 7th by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Draft; he’s going to be a very rich young man as soon as he signs his contract/endorsement deals, but his mother still went public with complaints against Mike Krzyzewski because Duke also recruited Marvin Bagley without consulting the Carter family about it.

From everything I read, Mrs Carter is a very bright woman, but she also said this, complaining that her son wasn’t the focal point of Duke’s team:

“In college, you have no voice. It’s a system set up that they drop you in and tell you what to do—you be a rebounder, shot-blocker, you take all the shots, nobody else can shoot. My child never got to show his full set of skills. He never got to do that.”

For the love of God, he is the #7 pick in the NBA Draft; Bagley was #2- they’re both going to be really rich. How much did Duke’s coaches have to do with that? Impossible to tell, but they sure as hell didn’t hurt the two young men any.

Takes a lot of onions for a parent to complain when their son is profiting handsomely.

              6) Joey Votto has been ejected eight times in his career; four of those were in the 1st inning.

              5) New Vikings’ QB Kirk Cousins is going to wind up making just under $127M over a five-year span, not bad for a guy with a career playoff record of 0-1.

              4) We read a lot of cruddy things about celebrities, then there is this from the Washington Post:

“NFL veterans Josh Norman and Demario Davis picked up toys and book bags Wednesday at a San Antonio Walmart to pass out to immigrant children who were released from detention centers.”

              Good for them.

              3) Baseball injury happenings:
              — Brewers’ OF Christian Yelich (sore back) left the game in Cincinnati in the first inning Thursday.
              — Astros put SS Carlos Correa (back) on the DL.

              2) Mariners 4, Orioles 2 (11)— Seattle swept a four-game series in Camden Yards, scoring winning run in all four games from the 7th inning on. Orioles’ season has been a nightmare.

              1) Happy birthday to the great Mel Brooks, who turned 92 Thursday; this true comic genius had the first cellphone, in the old 60’s TV show Get Smart, when secret agent Maxwell Smart had a phone in his shoe. Mr Brooks still does voiceovers for movies now and then.

              • LEADING OFF: Red Sox-Yankees, part 3, for MLB lead
                June 28, 2018

Here's a look at what's happening around the major leagues on Friday:

                BEASTS OF THE EAST

The Red Sox and Yankees start a three-game series in the Bronx, with the American League East division race as tight as ever. The archrivals were just a half-game apart in the standings entering play on Thursday, with the teams still toting the top two records in the major leagues. Boston and New York have split their first six matchups this season, with each team winning a home series so far.

CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees. The 37-year-old left-hander took a no-decision against the Red Sox with four runs allowed in four innings on May 10. Boston counters with Eduardo Rodriguez, who is coming off just his second loss of the season against Seattle last week. Rodriguez also squared off against Sabathia in that May 10 meeting at Yankee Stadium, striking out eight with only one hit allowed over five scoreless innings.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is expected back in the lineup after sitting out the series finale at Philadelphia on Wednesday that manager Aaron Boone wanted to pair with a day off on Thursday. Judge has 34 strikeouts in 25 career games against the Red Sox.

                DARVISH DISAPPOINTMENT

The Chicago Cubs return home from a 2-6 finish on an eight-game road trip to host the Minnesota Twins, but they'll start the series without ailing right-hander Yu Darvish. The 31-year-old is still feeling pain in his pitching arm, having been dealt a setback during a bullpen session on Thursday in Los Angeles where the Cubs split a four-game set with the Dodgers.

Darvish was on track to rejoin the rotation on Saturday, but Tyler Chatwood will take the mound in that game instead. Darvish, who threw five innings and 57 pitches for Class A South Bend in a rehabilitation start on Monday, has been on the disabled list for more than a month, his second stint of the season, because of triceps tendinitis. Darvish, who has a 4.95 ERA in eight starts, signed a $126 million, six-year contract with the Cubs in February.

                STAYING PUT

Minnesota plays the Cubs at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2009, continuing the easiest three-city road trip possible for the Twins. They arrived in Chicago earlier this week, losing two of three to the White Sox while needing 13 innings to salvage the final game on Thursday afternoon. Next week, it's a brief bus ride north to Milwaukee for three games against the Brewers.

Jose Berrios, who has a 2.05 ERA over his last eight starts, faces Cubs left-hander Mike Montgomery in the opener.

                SEEING RED

National League Central leader Milwaukee continues a four-game series in Cincinnati, with the Brewers sending Chase Anderson to the mound after striking out a season-high nine batters in his previous outing against St. Louis. Sal Romano pitches for the Reds against a dangerous Brewers lineup featuring Jesus Aguilar, who hit his 19th home run on Thursday to tie for the league lead.

                          June 29, 2018

Hottest team: Athletics (8-2 last 10)

Although Oakland faced three teams with losing records on its recent 10-game road trip, the A’s managed to win eight games. After sweeping the Padres in a quick two-game set and taking three of four from the White Sox, the A’s captured all four games from the struggling Tigers in Detroit. Oakland climbed out of an early 2-0 hole in Thursday’s 4-2 victory, but the A’s couldn’t trim a seven-game deficit to the Mariners for the second American League Wild Card spot following Seattle’s sweep of Baltimore.

The Athletics travel back to the Bay Area to welcome in the Indians for a three-game weekend set. Paul Blackburn looks to end his struggles after allowing at least six runs for the second time in three starts in last Sunday’s 10-3 loss at Chicago. Oakland will try to improve on a 1-6 record in its past seven home series openers, but the A’s swept the Indians in their previous meeting in a three-game set last July at the Coliseum.

                          Coldest team:Tigers (0-9 last nine)

Detroit has free-fallen since manufacturing a five-game winning streak earlier this month. The Tigers went 0-for-Ohio by losing twice at Cincinnati and three times at Cleveland, while blowing leads in three of four losses in a home sweep to surging Oakland. Detroit’s offense has scored two runs or fewer in five of the past seven defeats, while dropping to 4-9 in the last 13 games at Comerica Park.

The Tigers will try to turn around their recent misfortune with a trip north of the border to Toronto. Francisco Liriano is winless in his last four road starts for Detroit, as he faces a Blue Jays’ squad that has won eight of their past nine home games. The Tigers handled the Blue Jays at Comerica Park earlier this month by taking two of three from Toronto.

Hottest pitcher: Jose Berrios, Twins (8-5, 3.15 ERA)

Berrios is fresh off a season-high 12-strikeout performance in a 2-0 home victory over the Rangers as Minnesota improved to 6-2 in his previous eight starts. During this stretch, Berrios has yielded two runs or less seven times, while producing double-digit strikeouts on three occasions. The Minnesota right-hander will attempt to cure his road woes as the Twins remain in Chicago to face the Cubs after beating the White Sox on Thursday. The Twins own an 8-2 record in Berrios’ 10 home starts, compared to a 2-4 mark away from Target Field.

Coldest pitcher: Marco Gonzales, Mariners (7-5, 4.04 ERA)

Seattle finished its long road trip on a strong note by sweeping struggling Baltimore in a four-game set at Camden Yards. The Mariners head back to Safeco Field to start a three-game series with another last-place squad as Kansas City invades Seattle. Gonzales didn’t fare well on the road swing by drawing the Red Sox and Yankees in a pair of starts, while allowing 15 hits and 11 runs in 12.1 innings as Seattle lost both times. The left-hander had his issues with the Royals when faced them back in April by giving up eight hits and four runs in 2.1 innings of a 10-0 away defeat.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (5-1 last six)

Following a 2-1 victory over the Cubs to begin their four-game set at Chavez Ravine on Monday, Los Angeles and Chicago played to three high-scoring contests to close out their series. The Dodgers yielded 25 runs in the final three games, including a seven-spot in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 11-5 defeat to the Cubs as Chicago grabbed the split. Los Angeles hosts Colorado for a three-game series at Dodger Stadium this weekend as the Dodgers plated 33 runs in its sweep of the Rockies at Coors Field earlier this month.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (5-1 last six)

Seattle’s pitching had its problems in series losses at New York and Boston to begin 10-game road trip, but the Mariners allowed three runs or less in three of four wins at Baltimore. Seattle hosts Kansas City this weekend as the Mariners have played plenty of low-scoring games in recent series openers at Safeco Field by producing a 5-0-1 UNDER mark in the last six opportunities. In four of those games, the M’s scored two runs or less, while six of the last seven home series openers have been decided by one run, which could make Kansas City on the run-line an intriguing wager.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Yankees

The top two teams in the American League East square off in the Bronx as Boston owns a one-game advantage over New York heading into the weekend. The Red Sox travel to New York following a three-game sweep of the Angels, while finishing off their homestand at 5-1. The Yankees rebounded from a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rays to grab two of three from the Phillies on the road, although New York was shut out in the series finale on Wednesday, 3-0.

A pair of southpaws head to the hill tonight as Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez squares off against New York’s CC Sabathia. The Red Sox win a lot when Rodriguez takes the mound, as Boston owns a 13-2 record in his 15 starts this season, including a perfect 6-0 mark away from Fenway Park. Rodriguez’s six-game winning streak came to a halt in last Saturday’s 7-2 home setback to Seattle, as both losses suffered by the Red Sox this season with the left-hander on the mound came as a favorite of -170 or more.

Sabathia looks to end a two-start slide after dropping a pair of low-scoring defeats to the Rays. The Yankees have cashed the UNDER in each of Sabathia’s last four starts, while New York has compiled a 5-3 record in his eight home outings. The last time Sabathia faced the Red Sox in mid-May, the left-hander was tagged for nine hits and four runs in four innings of a 5-4 defeat. Last season, the Yankees won all four of Sabathia’s starts against the Red Sox, as he allowed a total of three runs in those outings.

Betcha didn’t know: Since blowing a 5-0 lead in a 9-5 loss to the Rockies on June 15, the Rangers have caught fire by winning nine of 11 games. Although Texas sits in last place of the AL West, Texas has captured four consecutive series, while winning three straight series openers. The Rangers welcome in the White Sox, who own a 3-1 record the last four contests, but Chicago has dropped seven of its past eight road series openers.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-200) vs. Royals

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+110) at Yankees

Biggest line move: Nationals (+105 to -101) at Phillies

Date and Time: Friday, June 29, 2018, 8:15 p.m. ET
Location: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO
                            MLB Odds: Cardinals -150, O/U 8.5
Probable Pitchers: Julio Teheran vs. Miles Mikolas
TV Coverage: FS South, FS Midwest

The Braves have been a surprisingly good road team this season, as they are 22-17 away from home, with 21 games going over the total and 18 going under. They are averaging almost five runs per game and giving up just 3.7 per contest.

The Cardinals are 23-19 at home and they have been a good team to bet under at home, with only 15 games going over, 25 going under the total, with two pushes. They are scoring about 4.3 runs per game and giving up about 3.6 runs per contest.

                            Starting Pitchers

You pretty much know what you are going to get with Teheran and it usually isn’t that great. He is 5-5 with a 4.52 ERA this season. He usually goes about six innings and gives up about four runs. He went just 4.2 innings last time out against Baltimore and gave up six hits and seven runs. Every now and then Teheran will throw a good one, as he did against San Diego two weeks ago when he allowed no runs and no hits in six innings. Those good starts are few and far between though and that is why his ERA is 4.52.

Mikolas has been very consistent for the Cardinals this season, as he comes into this game at 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA. He went 6.2 innings last time out against Milwaukee and gave up three hits and two runs. The only problem for Mikolas seems to be the first inning, as he has allowed six earned runs in the first inning in his last two starts. He has not faced the Braves since pitching in relief for the Padres in 2012.

                            Key Stats

The Braves are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings. The Braves are 4-1 in their last 5 series openers. The Braves are 1-9 in their last 10 Friday games. The Braves are 2-8 in Teheran’s last 10 starts vs. the National League Central.

The Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Cardinals are 19-41 in their last 60 games following an off day. The Cardinals are 7-3 in Mikolas' last 10 starts.

Looking at the total, the Over is 5-0 in the Braves last 5 road games. The Over is 4-1-1 in the Braves last 6 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 11-4 in the Cardinals last 15 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 14-6 in the Cardinals last 20 home games. The Under is 5-0 in Mikolas' last 5 home starts. The Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in St. Louis.

                            Braves vs. Cardinals Picks

There is no question that the pitching matchup in this game favors the Cardinals, but Atlanta has been solid on the road and St. Louis hasn’t been that great at home. I also can’t ignore that one stat about the Cardinals playing so poorly after an off day. I still lean toward the Cardinals simply because Mikolas has been so good, but I am definitely wary of the Braves.

I think the total could have more value, as St. Louis has been going under the total at home and three of the five career starts for Teheran against the Cardinals have gone under the total. I will take this game on Friday night under the total.

Braves vs. Cardinals Pick: Under the total
Braves vs. Cardinals Score Prediction: Cardinals 4, Braves 3

                            • 5 intriguing storylines for this weekend's games

Remember when the division races were going to be pretty much wrapped up by July 4? That was way back on Opening Day, when us wise guys thought we had it all figured out.

Now here we are on the final weekend before the Fourth, and five of the six divisions are still close. The Yankees and Red Sox appear headed for the playoffs, so the regular-season race -- and this weekend's series at Yankee Stadium -- will be critical.

Both teams appear headed for 100 wins, which means one of them will be in the American League Wild Card Game. No team wants to go at it for six months, win 100 times and then play a winner-take-all contest against, say, a 95-win Mariners team.

That's what happened to the 98-64 Pirates in 2015, when they ran into a buzzsaw named Jake Arrieta. The Cubs' ace ended Pittsburgh's season with a five-hit, 11-strikeout shutout.

"Sometimes," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said afterward, "you draw a tough bull."

And that's why the Wild Card Game works. The AL East runner-up can still make the playoffs, but the winner gets a best-of-five Division Series rather than a single game that puts an entire season of work on the line.

(Regardless of which team finishes second, there will be anguished cries to change the format if 100 wins only gets a team a Wild Card berth. But this is exactly how it was designed to work. As Giants outfielder Hunter Pence said in 2014, "We're in this game [against the Pirates] because we weren't good enough to win our division. But it gives us a chance to keep playing, and if you're a competitive person, you love that.")

Meanwhile, all three National League races are close and seem likely to stay that way, which ramps up the pressure on every general manager to make upgrades at the July 31 Trade Deadline. But that's another story.

Here's a preview of the weekend:

                              1. AL East: it's complicated (not)

In the long history of Red Sox-Yankees, from Bucky Bleepin' Dent and Aaron Bleepin' Boone to Dave Bleepin' Roberts (OK, no one has ever used Bleepin' in association with his name), it has seldom, if ever, been better than this.

Boston and New York play three times at Yankee Stadium this weekend during a time when the teams have the two best records in the game, the Red Sox hold a one-game lead, and they haven't been separated by more than 2 1/2 games since April. Fangraphs projects them both to finish 102-60. They've split the first six games of the season series, and have 10 remaining after this weekend, including the final weekend of the regular season, again at Yankee Stadium. Grab your popcorn, pull up a chair and enjoy the show.

                              2. Is this where the Nationals make their stand?
Since right around the time 19-year-old Bryce Harper played his first Major League game, Washington has represented a certain level of excellence.

In the past seven seasons, only the Dodgers have won more regular-season games, a tribute to Harper's greatness and that of the work of Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo.

Friday, as they play the second of a four-game series against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, that Nats have been in third place in the National League East for the past week and have been shut out six times in a stretch of 16 games.

With Stephen Strasburg on the disabled list and Harper struggling, Washington is having its organizational depth tested.

Rookie Erick Fedde, and veterans Jeremy Hellickson and Gio Gonzalez are lined up for the final three games of the series. At a time when the Phillies have some problems of their own, this weekend might offer a preview of how the NL East is going to play out.

                              3. This Cardinals-Braves series might be more of a litmus test for St. Louis
Just when the Cardinals seemed to be in danger of falling way behind the Brewers and Cubs in the NL Central, their young rotation had a great stretch, and Yadier Molina homered twice against Milwaukee to start a four-game win streak.

Meanwhile, the Braves began a third consecutive week atop the NL East even after losing five of seven thanks to a pitching staff that has hit a bump in the road (5.14 ERA). While the rumor mill has Atlanta shopping for third-base help, it's arms -- rotation and bullpen -- that the club could use at the moment. Unlike the Cardinals, though, the Braves may have an easier path to the postseason considering the struggles of the Nationals and Phillies.

                              4. The (NL) West will be won, but it won't be anytime soon
The Dodgers (17-6), Diamondbacks (18-7) and Giants (16-9) have the NL's three best records this month. The Dodgers and D-backs are doing it with offense, the Giants with pitching.

Check this out: The Dodgers have 51 home runs in June, the most in baseball. The Diamondbacks have 37, the second-most. Paul Goldschmidt of the D-backs and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers have 10 apiece to lead the Majors. Meanwhile, the Giants 2.63 ERA is baseball's lowest. (The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are tied for third at 3.53).

And it's never too early to begin scoreboard watching, which is why two series -- Giants and Diamondbacks and Rockies at Dodgers -- already have a September feel to them.

                              5. The Reds suddenly seem capable of complicating things
The Brewers had better not sleep on the Reds this weekend at Miller Park. At the moment, few teams are playing better. Cincinnati entered the series on Thursday 31-31 since Jim Riggleman took over as interim manager, and it has won nine of 10, including a four-game sweep of the Cubs and two of three in Atlanta.

The Reds have run up a 68-40 run differential in that time with Billy Hamilton playing his best baseball of the season, and Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett remaining hot. Riggleman has found a pair of reliable starters in Matt Harvey and Anthony DeSclafani, and Raisel Iglesias has been lights-out in the back of the bullpen.
