    • Friday’s 6-pack

      — Dodgers’ pitcher Ross Stripling is also a licensed stock broker.

      — Gleyber Torres passed on the Home Run Derby; they’re having trouble getting guys.

      — Marlins’ P Dan Straily got suspended five games for drilling Buster Posey.

      — It is possible that Brooks Koepka lost the trophy he won for winning the US Open. He says he doesn’t know where it is.

      — Mike Trout had a stretch this week where he reached base 29 of 36 times, the best 8-game stretch of on-base %age since Stan Musial in 1953.

      — In their first 74 games, Kansas City Royals started 11 different players in the #2 spot in the batting order. Not good.

      Tweet of the Day
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised the last three weeks what a good teammate he is, how smart he is, how he sees the game. He should be playing in the National Football League, and I believe he will when he gets through with us.”
Hamilton Tiger-Cats coach June Jones III, talking about Johnny Manziel

      Friday’s quiz
Which NBA team drafted Chris Webber?

      Thursday’s quiz
Washington Nationals were the Montreal Expos before moving to our nation’a capital.

      Wednesday’s quiz

Friday’s Den: Running Diary of the 1st round of the NBA Draft…….

7:25: Before the NBA Draft, some NFL news. Bucs’ QB James Winston will be suspended for three games, for something that happened with an Uber drive in Arizona two years ago.

Buccaneers open at New Orleans, then the Eagles/Steelers come to Tampa Bay. Not great to play those teams without your starting QB.

Winston had character-related issues in college, too. This isn’t good for him or the Bucs or the NFL or coach Dirk Koetter, who needs a good season to keep his job.

7:30: NBA Draft is in Brooklyn; they need to do what the NHL/NFL do now and move the draft around the country, get out of New York City.

Commissioner Adam Silver is one of my heroes; a tall, bald man with glasses who has a great job and does it very well, but stop with the opening statement. Drafts get over-hyped; need to see teams picking players as soon as possible.

7:35: Jay Bilas has already questioned Deandre Ayton’s “motor” which means he doesn’t try hard all the time. Good Lord, that bothers me, if you spend your #1 pick on someone who is often lethargic. Effort should never be an issue.

Anyway, the Phoenix Suns take Ayton, whose Arizona team got plastered by Buffalo in the first round of the NCAA tournament. I picked Arizona, but I’m not bitter at all.

ESPN has Chauncey Billups (good) and Bilas (annoying) as its analysts, Rece Davis (very good) as its host. Billups compares Ayton to Joel Embiid. Davis points out that Ayton is the 9th straight college freshman to be the first pick in the draft.

7:44: Marvin Bagley III goes #2 to Sacramento. Bilas downplays Bagley’s defensive abilities, but Duke played a 2-3 zone almost all of last season. Go figure. Billups compares Bagley to Chris Bosh. Bagley is happy to be in Sacramento, which is refreshing.

Duke had a player picked in the top 3 in the last five NBA Drafts, which is a record.

NBA saved me lot of money by putting four patches on the right side of each team’s hats which they’re selling on the Interweb. I’m not a fan of a lot of junk on the hats I buy, so this saves me a decent amount of money, because the front of the hats are nice.

7:48: Worst part of the NBA Draft is they don’t announce the trades as they happen, which is stupid and misleading. Atlanta Hawks take Luka Doncic but ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski says he is being traded to Dallas, with the Hawks winding up with Trae Young.

7:55: Memphis takes Jaren Jackson Jr, whose mother is Director of Player Ops for the WNBA. At first, Jackson said he didn’t want to play for Memphis, but I’m sure he won’t mind being paid by Memphis. Billups compares him to Joakim Noah.

Jackson’s dad played 13 years in the NBA; his first eight years in the NBA, he played for a different team every year.

8:00: Dallas takes Trae Young, who will be traded to Atlanta. ESPN ruined Young’s season at Oklahoma by over-hyping him a sickening amount and putting a huge target on his back. The Hawks get a 2019 first-round pick from Dallas in addition to the Young/Doncic swap.

8:08: Orlando takes Mo Bamba with the #6 pick; he has a 7-foot-10 wingspan, the longest wingspan ever recorded at the NBA Combine. Bilas says he needs to get a lot stronger.

They showed video recently of Bamba making ton of 3-pointers in a workout, but he shot 27.5% behind the arc at Texas last year, so we’ll see. The NBA 3-point shot is longer than college.

NHL Draft is Friday; it’ll be different than this draft. Not better, not worse. Different.

8:13: Bulls won their fewest games in 14 years this year; they take Wendell Carter, a center from Duke. Carter could’ve gone to Harvard had he wanted to; he is a good shooter, but again, Duke played a ton of 2-3 zone last year, so will defense be an issue, especially on pick/roll? Billups compares him to Carlos Boozer.

8:18: Cavaliers take Alabama PG Collin Sexton, who Billups compares to Eric Bledsoe. Kid is highly competitive, but Cleveland might be a sad place to watch basketball for a few years, with Lebron James expected to skip town.

8:24: Knicks missed the playoffs the last five years; why does ESPN have to show Spike Lee before their draft pick? New York takes Kevin Knox, another Kentucky player. John Calipari’s recruiting has to get easier and easier with every year all his guys go in the 1st round.

Knox played quarterback in high school, which hints at leadership qualities.

8:30— 76ers take Mikal Bridges, a 4-year player who played on two national title teams with Villanova. He is 6-7 wth a 7-2 wingspan; Billups compares him to Nicolas Batum of the Hornets.

Bridges’ mother is VP of Human Resources with the 76ers.

8:37: Charlotte Hornets take a Canadian PG and another Kentucky player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who reminds Billups of Michael Carter-Williams, but the kid will be traded to the Clippers. I’d rather live in LA than Charlotte anyway, but no one asked me.

He shot 40.4% on the arc and 82% on the foul line, both good things, and he didn’t start early last season- he earned his way into the starting lineup.

ESPN has an international scouting guy named Mike Schmitz on; he says Gilgeous-Alexander was the best guard in the draft.

8:43: Clippers draft Miles Bridges, who will be traded to the Hornets. Bridges would’ve been a high draft pick LY; Billups compares him to Shawn Marion, a pretty big compliment.

Clippers gave Charlotte two future 2nd-round picks to swap the 11th and 12th picks.

8:48: University of Buffalo’s social media people posted this on Twitter:

“Congrats to @DeandreAyton on being selected #1 overall in the #NBADraft by the @Suns! We hope your @NBA career starts better than your college one ended”

Wow. Ayton’s college career ended with an ugly loss to Buffalo.

8:50: NBA Lottery started in 1985; Boston College’s Jerome Robinson is the Eagles’ first player ever taken in the lottery— Clippers took him at #13. John Bagley was the 12th pick in the ’82 Draft, taken by Cleveland.

Tonight is June 21; on July 6, the NBA Summer League begins in Las Vegas, so these kids who get drafted will be fighting for jobs in 16 short days, against other kids who didn’t get drafted and veterans who’ve played in the NBA before, or are fighting to get there. Very competitive.

8:54: Denver owner Stan Kroenke’s son Josh started for Missouri’s hoop team 15 or so years ago; if they don’t take Michael Porter Jr, who the hell will?

8:58: Nuggets draft Porter; their trainer should ask for a raise. Billups compares him to Kevin Durant, which is a total insult to Durant. Porter played three college games, and one of them was for two whole minutes. He is more suspect than prospect.

In totally unrelated news, Flava Flav threw out the first pitch at the Richmond Flying Squirrels game tonight. Squirrels are the AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. They had 6,117 fans in Richmond, for a game that was shortened by rain.

9:06: Washington Wizards take Oregon alum Troy Brown, who I think is a Las Vegas kid and is considered a versatile player. Billups compares him to Andre Iguodala.

There is a guy sitting next to Arizona coach Sean Miller who has the shiniest bald head I’ve ever seen. As a bald man myself, just don’t have the energy to do that day after day, keep my head totally slick. Plus I’d look like Mr Potato Head if I did that, so no thanks.

9:14: Zhaire Smith played one year at Texas Tech; the Suns drafted him, but he’s getting traded to the 76ers for Mikal Bridges, which puts the kibosh on Mrs Bridges’ happiness from 45 minutes ago. Smith wasn’t an ESPN top 100 recruit coming out of high school- it is rare for a player like that to be drafted so high.

9:22: Milwaukee Bucks take Donte DiVincenzo, who started only 10 of Villanova’s 40 games LY, but he played starter’s minutes (29.7 mpg), scoring 13.4 ppg, making 40.1% on the arc, in his only season of college ball.

He scored 31 points in the national championship game, but anytime I hear a kid raised his draft stock in the Combine, it bothers me. Billups compares him to Tyler Johnson.

Random fact; over half the players in the NBA (53%) have played in the G-League.

Talk about draft/trades in the NBA; on June 24, 1998, Dirk Nowitzki was traded by Bucks with Pat Garrity to the Mavericks for Robert Traylor. How did that work out?

9:29: San Antonio Spurs drafted G Lonnie Walker from Miami, FL, who has had knee issues and also has ballhandling/defensive issues, but he can score. Spurs’ coaches will develop him. Not many kids who go to high school in Reading, PA go to college in Miami.

9:34: Atlanta Hawks take a kid from the Albany area, Kevin Huerter from Maryland. Huerter’s dad and brother play/played for Siena College; Kevin is an excellent shooter; good luck to the young man. I was surprised when he came out of school, but shooters are always in demand.

People have too much money: LeBron James’ jersey from Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals just closed on @NBAAUCTIONS to a winning bid of $100,322. Oy.

9:42: Minnesota takes Josh Okogie, a guard from Georgia Tech. Bilas says his man asset is that “…..he plays his tail off all the time.” No wingspan, no upside, he just tries hard. There are worse things someone can say about you.

Budweiser just ran a commercial with John Starks, the old Knicks’ guard who talks about being undrafted, then fighting to make it in the NBA. Damn good commercial.

Starks played 13 years in the NBA, scored over 10,800 points.

9:46: Utah drafts Grayson Allen; Jazz are coached by Duke alum Quin Snyder. Now I have to watch all of Utah’s summer league games to see if someone kicks Allen’s ass. He got away with being a dirty player in college because Coach K sheltered him, but now he is out on his own. We’ll see how that works out.

9:51: Chicago Bulls take Chandler Hutchison from Boise State. He is the first Boise player drafted since 1999, which should help their recruiting. Billups compares him to Kyle Kuzma.

OK, I have Madison Bumgarner on my fantasy baseball team and he’s pitching in a few minutes, so time to grab some food and watch that game. Hope you enjoyed this…….

      • LEADING OFF: Herrera on home run roll, D-backs bashing Bucs
        June 21, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

        PACKING A PUNCH

Odubel Herrera tries to homer in his fifth straight game when the Phillies begin a three-game series at Washington. ''What he's doing is special,'' Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler said. ''It's elite.'' Herrera is batting .419 (13 for 31) with two doubles, five homers and eight RBIs in the last seven games. Seven of his 12 homers have given the Phillies a lead. ''He's a different breed,'' pitcher Jake Arrieta said. ''When he gets hot, he's fun to watch.''

        BASHING THE BUCS

Jon Jay and the Diamondbacks look to keep feasting on Pirates pitching when the teams square off in Pittsburgh again. Arizona has scored 35 runs in going 3-1 against the Pirates this season. Jay doubled in each of the first two innings Thursday night, when the Diamondbacks cruised to a 9-3 victory. The center fielder is hitting .340 in 13 games since being acquired from Kansas City in a June 6 trade. Ivan Nova (4-5, 4.42 ERA) will try to slow down Arizona - the right-hander has won both starts with a 1.54 ERA since being activated from the disabled list June 10. He missed two weeks with a sprained right ring finger. Patrick Corbin (6-5, 3.48) gets the ball for the Diamondbacks. The lefty is 1-2 with a 5.90 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates.

        ICHI-WHO?

Keep an eye on the Mariners' dugout at Fenway Park for a mysterious, mustachioed visitor when Seattle opens a series in Boston. Associated Press photographer Bill Kostround spotted Ichiro Suzuki hiding on Seattle's bench Thursday at Yankee Stadium wearing a fake mustache, sunglasses and a hoodie. Officially, Suzuki isn't allowed to be in the dugout during games under Major League Baseball rules after moving to the team's front office in early May. But the 44-year-old outfielder channeled former Mets manager Bobby Valentine to sneak his way onto the bench - Valentine donned a fake mustache and sunglasses and returned to the dugout after being ejected from a game in 1999. ''He was perfect. I never would have known it was him,'' Valentine texted to the AP.

        DOUBLE DIP

The Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox are set to play a single-admission doubleheader after Thursday night's scheduled game in the Windy City was postponed because of rain. It was the 40th postponement in the majors this season, already one more than all of last year. James Shields (2-8, 4.63 ERA) and Lucas Giolito (4-7, 7.19) will start for Chicago, which has lost seven straight to match a season high and is a season-low 25 games under .500. Oakland will send Sean Manaea (6-6, 3.56) and Chris Bassitt (0-2, 2.45) to the mound.

        • Giants' Strickland apologizes after temper lands him on DL
          June 21, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) San Francisco Giants closer Hunter Strickland apologized to his team, fans, and said he'd consider anger management counseling three days after injuring his hand punching a door in frustration after a blown save against Miami.

Strickland is expected to be out six to eight weeks after breaking the pinkie on his pitching hand Monday. Sam Dyson and Tony Watson will be called upon for closing duties.

Strickland has had several outbursts on a national stage.

The 29-year-old right hander jawed with Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez during Game 2 of the World Series.

Last season he threw at Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper three years after he homered off Strickland in the 2014 NLDS.

''I think that obviously my anger in these moments have gotten the best of me and caused stupid decisions, so I don't think I should be this angry person,'' Strickland said. ''I think focused is the better word. We do have to be focused and locked in, focused on getting those outs.''

Strickland said he planned to address teammates later in the day.

''I'm responsible,'' Strickland said. ''I'm not here to blame anybody on anything and I think that's the way it should be.''

Strickland had surgery Tuesday, in which two pins were put in his injured finger. He'll have more X-rays two weeks, when he hopes to have the pins taken out.

''That's out of my control,'' Strickland said. ''I'll just do what I can, work hard and let the doctors decide the rest.''

Cardinals put Wacha on DL, recall Gant
          June 21, 2018

MILWAUKEE (AP) Cardinals right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha returned to St. Louis on Thursday for an MRI.

The Cardinals placed Wacha on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain before Thursday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. They recalled right-hander John Gant from Triple-A Memphis.

''Everyone has injuries,'' Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said. ''We've just got to deal with it.''

Wacha accompanied the team as it flew to Milwaukee from Philadelphia, but then he continued on to St. Louis for the medical scan.

''We have not gotten an MRI yet,'' Girsch said. ''Hope to have it tonight.''

Wacha, who leads the team in wins (8-2) and strikeouts (71) in 15 starts with a 3.20 ERA, left Wednesday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies with the injury. He surrendered a two-run homer to Cesar Hernandez in the fourth inning and pitched to one more batter before he was replaced by Mike Mayers. The Cardinals lost 4-3.

It's the third time this season that Gant has been recalled. He is 1-2 with a 4.74 ERA in seven appearances, including three starts for the Cardinals this year.

Gant could be a candidate for a start on Monday.

''Gant will be available in the bullpen the next few days,'' Girsch said. ''We still feel we have good options in the rotation. They're all capable of going the rest of the way. Obviously, we'd like to get guys back and have more depth.''

D-Backs P Miller set to be activated
          June 21, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Shelby Miller is scheduled to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks' rotation Monday, 14 months after the right-hander underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery.

Miller will face the Marlins in Miami. He rejoined the NL West-leading Diamondbacks before their game Thursday night against the Pirates after making four rehab starts in the minor leagues.

''I'm pretty excited but I'm assuming the first (start) back won't be perfect,'' Miller said. ''There are going to be times where I'm going to have to bear down and get through some stuff. I've talked to people (who have had the surgery) and they say command is the last thing to come back.''

The 27-year-old Miller pitched a combined 19 1/3 innings in his rehab starts, two with Double-A Jackson and two with Single-A Visalia. He allowed 10 runs and 20 hits while striking out 28 and walking six.

A 15-game winner in 2013 with the St. Louis Cardinals and an All-Star in 2015 with the Atlanta Braves, Miller was injured in his fourth start last season. He has a 5-14 record and 5.78 ERA in 24 starts since the Diamondbacks acquired him from the Braves in a trade prior to the 2016 season.

''I definitely have some thing to prove over here,'' Miller said.

Miller will take the rotation spot of rookie right-hander Matt Koch, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno. Koch was 5-4 with a 4.40 ERA in 13 games, including 12 stats.

Right-handed reliever Jake Barrett was recalled from Reno. He has appeared in three games for the Diamondbacks this season.

          **************************

          Marlins' Straily suspended 5 games
          June 21, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Miami pitcher Dan Straily has been suspended for five games for intentionally throwing a pitch at San Francisco's Buster Posey while warnings were in place for both teams.

Major League Baseball also suspended Marlins manager Don Mattingly for one game Thursday and fined Straily and Mattingly undisclosed amounts.

On Tuesday night in the Marlins' 6-3 loss in San Francisco, Straily and Mattingly were automatically ejected in the second inning after Straily hit Posey on the left arm with a pitch. Both sides had been warned by plate umpire Andy Fletcher the previous inning after Giants rookie starter Dereck Rodriguez beaned Lewis Brinson as tempers flared for the second straight game. Posey had homered in the first inning.

Mariners place Nicasio, Altavillla on DL
          June 21, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) The Seattle Mariners have placed right-handers Juan Nicasio and Dan Altavilla on the 10-day disabled list, recalled infielder Daniel Vogelbach, and purchased the contract of right-hander Mike Morin from Triple-A Tacoma.

Nicasio has swelling in his right knee, while Altavilla is sidelined by a right elbow UCL sprain.

Mariners manager Scott Servais says Thursday he hates ''to lose either one of those guys, but we've got to get them healthy, get them right.''

Nicasio gave up four earned runs without getting an out June 6 at Houston after not allowing a run in his previous eight games.

Altavilla, 3-2 with 2.61 ERA over 22 appearances, was previously on the DL May 1-12 with right AC joint inflammation. He will be examined by team doctors in Seattle.

Morin went 2-1 with three saves and a 3.24 ERA in 20 games for Tacoma.

Vogelbach, in his third stint with the Mariners this season, hit .200 with two homers and five RBIs and in 22 earlier games.

The Cardinals are in Milwaukee for a huge NL Central showdown

The NL Central is shaping up to be one of the best division races we may have this year as the Cubs and Brewers are tied atop the division entering Thursday's play while St Louis is just a few games back. The Cards have started to right the ship after a rough opening stretch to the year, and this weekend they've got a huge four-game set with the Brewers in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee enters this series with a 5-4 SU edge in the season series so far, but I wouldn't put it past the Cardinals to flip that record around by the time Sunday evening arrives. St Louis should be getting some decent underdog odds throughout this entire series as the road team (they are in the +110 range for Game 1 on Thursday), and with three of their four wins over the Brewers this year coming IN Milwaukee, I'm expecting a series split at worst for the Cardinals this weekend.

                    Tony Mejia

Hottest team: Rangers (5-0 last five)

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this is the first time all season that Texas has taken up residence in this spot. The Rangers hadn't even won four straight games until earlier this week, registering their first three-game sweep in taking down Kansas City.

Following a day off, the Rangers open a series against the Twins, making their lone stop of the season in Minneapolis. The Rangers went 3-4 against Minnesota last season and are an underdog against rookie Fernando Romero. Lefty Mike Minor was on the mound to open Texas' winning streak against Colorado on Saturday, snapping a seven-game skid. He's never started against Minnesota but has an 8.14 road ERA.

Coldest team: Royals (0-9 last nine, 1-15 last 16)

In addition to being swept by lowly Texas, Kansas City has also had the brooms broken out against it by the Astros and Reds. After completing a winless homestand, the Royals hit the road to face Houston. They were outscored 24-9 by the Astros over the weekend.

Kansas City also dropped nine straight in April, opening 3-14. It also lost nine games last season but hasn't had a skid reach double-digits since losing 12 in a row in 2012. Danny Duffy will attempt to stop the bleeding against fellow lefty Dallas Keuchel, who picked up his first victory since May 13 last time out with 10-2 win on Saturday in K.C. Royals catcher Salvador Perez is just 2-for-21 against him in career meetings.

Hottest pitcher: Clayton Richard (6-6, 4.31 ERA)

Over his last seven starts, Richard is 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA and a WHIP of 0.95. He flirted with a no-hitter in Miami and comes off a road win in Atlanta to move his June record to 3-0. Be warned, however, that Richard had his shortest start of the season against the Giants, surrendering a season-worst seven runs and eight hits in just four innings. He's 0-3 against San Francisco since returning to San Diego for this second stint with the team, so there are eight Giants batting .400 or better against him over their careers.

Coldest pitcher: Alex Cobb, Orioles (2-9, 7.14 ERA)

This weekend's lone interleague series begins in Atlanta with Cobb looking to avoid becoming the first pitcher to lose 10 games on the season. After allowing just two hits over six innings in a win over the Mets to open June in building off a decent May, Cobb has surrendered 14 runs and four homers in 10.2 innings, suffering losses against the Jays and Marlins as his ERA crept back up over 7.00. He closed April with the number at 13.11. The Braves will send lefty Sean Newcomb (8-2, 2.70) to the mound and are heavily favored (-190).

Biggest OVER run: A's (7-1 last eight)

Arizona couldn’t pull off the home sweep of Pittsburgh on Wednesday, but the D-backs scored a pair of late runs to cash the OVER of 7 ½ in a 5-4 loss. The D-backs plated at least eight runs in each of their previous five games (all wins), but fell to 2-19 in their last 21 games when scoring four runs or fewer. Overall, Arizona is 11-4 in the past 15 contests, meaning the D-backs have been plating plenty of runs of late, which includes a 7-2 mark to the OVER in the last nine home contests. The D-backs host the Mets on Thursday, looking to avenge a three-game sweep at Citi Field last month in which Arizona scored only six runs.

Biggest UNDER run: Yankees (15-1 last 16)

New York's 'under' run has been a reliable money maker in June and prevailed yesterday despite four first-inning runs when the Mariners failed to rally in the late innings. The lone 'over' in the run came as a result of New York's comeback from a 5-0 deficit on Wednesday, a game the Bombers won 7-5 on a Giancarlo Stanton walk-off blast. The Yankees are 7-1 over their last eight and 17-4 since May 31, holding teams to four or fewer runs in all but three of those contests. The Rays managed just seven runs over four games against the Yanks last weekend, winning only the series finale to avoid being swept. Tampa Bay has seen the 'under' prevail in eight of its last nine and will use its bullpen approach here, sending out Ryne Stanek as the opener. C.C. Sabathia (4-2, 3.30) is coming off his longest outing of the season, striking out 10 Rays in a tough-luck 3-1 loss.

Matchup to watch: Mariners at Red Sox

This would be your AL Wild Card game if the season ended today. Obviously, there are still nearly 90 games left, but given that the teams just split a four-game set at Safeco Field just last week in a series that featured three one-run games, this is by the most compelling show the American League is offering up over the next few days.

Knuckleballer Steven Wright and soft-tossing lefty Wade LeBlanc hooked up last Saturday night in a 1-0 game that Mariners captured. LeBlanc, a pitch-to-contact guy, struck out nine and walked none, while Wright worked seven innings in suffering a hard-luck loss.

Boston avoided being swept by the Twins on Thursday afternoon, breaking open a tight game late before cruising to a 9-2 win to end a 10-game road trip at 6-4. Seattle was swept for the first time all season in the Bronx, failing to rally after ace James Paxton surrendered all the runs New York would score in the first inning of a 4-3 afternoon loss.

These teams split last season's six meetings, but Seattle won two of three at Fenway. The 'under' is 7-3 in their last 10 head-to-head matchups.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
The A's will be playing their first doubleheader of 2018, while the host White Sox will be playing their third. Based on the pitching matchups, Oakland is likely to be favored in both games. The A's haven't played in many twinbills this decade but are coming off a sweep in their most recent one. Last September, Oakland routed Houston at home by a combined margin of 22-5.

Oakland is looking to set a franchise record in Game 1, having hit home runs in 21 straight road games to even a mark set back in July-Sept of 2013. Meanwhile, Chicago has played at least one doubleheader per season since 2007 but have dropped seven in a row overall. Check the weather forecast since more showers are a possibility.

                    Biggest public favorite:
                    Cubs (-130) at Reds

                    Biggest public underdog:
                    Royals (+270) at Astros

                    Biggest line move:
Reds (+138 to +115) vs. Twins

                          Friday MLB Betting Preview

                          Baltimore Orioles vs Atlanta Braves

This week has been all about interleague play for both the Orioles and Braves as Atlanta was able to split a two-game set north of the border with Toronto, while Baltimore dropped two of three in Washington. These two meet in Atlanta tonight for the start of a three-game weekend series as Baltimore continues life without a DH in their order.

On paper this series looks like a complete mismatch as Atlanta has more than double the wins (43) that Baltimore has (21) this year, but that doesn't always mean it will be a whitewash on the field. The Braves come in as heavy favorites tonight against this Orioles team, so is it worth it to swallow all that chalk?

Odds: Baltimore (+157) vs Atlanta (-175); Total set at 8.5

Right off the bat it's hard not to notice the reverse line movement we've already seen on this game as Atlanta actually opened up in the -200 range and has since come down significantly despite more than 80% of the action coming their way. That's quite a move for any game and it's interesting to say the least here, because it's easy to see why the Braves are the ones getting all the support. They are the much better team in the standings sure, but they are up against Baltimore starter Alex Cobb this evening who has just been dreadful for the O's.

Cobb has a 2-9 SU record on the year and that basically accounts for all his starts as Baltimore is just 2-10 SU in his 12 starts in total. Cobb has a 7.14 ERA on the year thanks to giving up 92 hits in just 63 IP, as it hasn't seemed to matter who he's been up against he's been getting hit hard. Yet the bettors who have steamed this line in Baltimore's favor have to see something in Cobb to make them believe he's got a better chance to win tonight than this price suggests, and given that he's pitched at least 6+ innings in three of his last four starts may be a sign that he's turning the corner. All three of those 6+ IP games have come against NL opponents as well meaning that maybe a lack of familiarity with Cobb by opposing offenses may be just what he needs to get back on track.

Atlanta counters with lefty Sean Newcomb tonight and his numbers couldn't be more different than the ones Cobb has. Newcomb enters play tonight with a 2.70 ERA on the year, has allowed just 58 hits in 80 IP and has a 8-2 SU record. Given the idea that so many MLB bettors love to handicap games based on the starting pitching matchup, you'd have expected plenty of action on Atlanta like there is, but the line move we've seen wouldn't be expected. That's what makes that line move all the more intriguing. Are you going to pile on with the masses on the Braves now that the price is better? Or plug your nose and ride the line move with a very bad team like Baltimore?

For me, I'm going to close my eyes and ride with the line move on Baltimore as I don't think it's as stinky as it needs to be to plug your nose. Yes, Baltimore is a very bad team this year and have arguably their worst pitcher on the hill tonight, but Cobb has had some level of success against NL squads of late and for as good as the Braves season has been to-date, I'm still not a total believer in this team overall. Having them priced in the -200 range (at open) seems like some over-inflation, and although I may have missed the best of the number with Baltimore, I still think there is some meat on the bone there at the current odds.

As an organization the Braves are just 6-21 SU in their last 27 at home against AL opponents, and that includes a 0-5 SU run when a righty is on the hill for that AL squad. Put the reverse line move in favor of the Orioles on top of that, and I'll be rolling with the underdogs from Baltimore tonight as I think we see them show up and at worst make a game of it this evening.

                          Best Bet: Baltimore ML

Seattle Mariners At Boston Red Sox

The Seattle Mariners have cooled off after one of the hottest streaks of any team this season, and their losing ways may continue on Saturday. Seattle will be on the road against the powerful Boston Red Sox in a game that features two of the winningest teams in the American League.

Even though the Mariners only have three fewer losses than Boston this season there is a pretty wide gulf between the teams. The Red Sox are easily superior and also have the home field advantage in this matchup. Boston should be a comfortable favorite to come away with the victory in MLB gambling.

The MLB Baseball contest will be held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The game will take place on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018, at 7:15 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on FOX.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

                          Odds Analysis

The odds have not yet been released but it is virtually certain the Red Sox will be the favorites in this matchup. They have gone 23-11 at home on the season and will aim for a victory. The Mariners have a 46-29 overall record on the season, which is the fourth-best mark in the A.L., but with only a plus-14 run-differential, which is a sign of regression moving forward.

                          Probable Pitchers

The Red Sox are projected to send left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound. He is 9-1 on the season with a 3.59 ERA. Rodriguez has 90 strikeouts in only 77 innings pitched and has limited his walks, which is a great combination. The Red Sox have been extremely successful on the season when Rodriguez starts and hope to keep that going.

The Mariners will send Mike Leake to the hill. He is 7-4 on the year with a 4.47 ERA. Leake gave up five runs last time out, which snapped a five-start streak of allowing two earned runs or fewer. He doesn’t have huge strikeout numbers and could have some trouble silencing the potent Boston offense.

                          Player To Watch

J.D. Martinez -- The Red Sox had a good team last season but was missing some thump in the middle of its lineup. Martinez solved that issue, as he signed in free agency and has delivered perfectly. He is batting .315 with 22 home runs, 55 RBIs and 48 runs scored on the season. The Red Sox have a lot of other talented hitters, highlighted by Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts, but Martinez has been integral in adding the thunder within the heart of the order.

If the table-setters get on for him in this game, Martinez could be looking at another game-changing dinger. Leake must be very careful when pitching to him because he doesn’t have the velocity to overpower a hitter of this caliber and has to hit his spots.

                          Free MLB ATS Picks

The Red Sox are the easy choice in this one. The Mariners played above their heads for a long stretch and will be hoping to hold on to a playoff spot moving forward. Look for a solid outing from Rodriguez to lead the way to an easy win in MLB wagering.

The scoring total will likely come in around nine runs and the “over” would be the right play if that happens because the Red Sox could very well tee off against Leake and the Seattle bullpen. The Mariners better get some big hits because they don’t have the same consistent attack as Boston.

MLB ATS Pick: Boston Red Sox 7, Seattle Mariners 4

After going 2-0 with my weekend series wagers a couple of weeks ago, last week's plays split the board right down the middle. Philadelphia was able to claim the final two games of their series with Milwaukee, while the exact opposite happened to the Angels as they dropped their final two contests with Oakland. It was a “no harm, no foul” weekend with those plays so it's on to this weekend's matchups.

This weekend there aren't as many matchups to breakdown as there were a handful of four-game series that got going yesterday, but there are still two series plays where I think we can catch a winner or two. Let's get right to them.

LA Dodgers (-145) vs New York Mets (+125)

The L.A Dodgers hit a bit of a snag this week having dropped two of three to the Cubs, but after having Thursday off I like them to bounce back strong this weekend against a Mets team that deserves to be faded nearly every day.

L.A opens up as a -160 favorite on Friday night with Alex Wood going up against Zack Wheeler and they also have a favorable scheduling spot for that Game 1 as well. L.A got some rest and relaxation time in on Thursday during their travel day, but New York played an afternoon matinee in Colorado (lost 6-4) and then travelled back home for the first time in 10+ days. That was the end of a 10-game road trip for New York that saw them go 3-7 SU overall, and I've never got a problem fading a squad – especially one as suspect as the Mets – in their first game off a long road trip with a taxed bullpen that got plenty of work in Colorado the past few days.

After that we've got Saturday's matchup of Jacob deGrom vs Caleb Ferguson where without question the Mets will be laying significant juice, followed by the all lefty matchup of Jason Vargas vs Rich Hill on Sunday. This series wager appears as though it will come down to that Sunday game – one I expect L.A to be the favorites in -
but I also wouldn't write off the Dodgers that quickly against deGrom. Sure, deGrom has been a bright spot for New York this year, but the Dodgers are the defending NL Champs and have more than enough firepower in their lineup to light him deGrom up if he doesn't have his best stuff. At -145 I'm getting the much better team here that could be laying that price or higher in two of the three games individually. Tough to pass that up.

Best Bet: L.A Dodgers to win the series (-145)

Texas Rangers (+215) vs Minnesota Twins (-255)

Right from the top, this is a series price I just really don't get. Both teams enter this series with nearly the same amount of wins – Texas has 32 while Minnesota has 33 – and while the pitching matchups on Saturday and Sunday do favor Minnesota, I just don't see how they should have this much chalk attached to their name.

Texas comes into this series having won five in a row after sweeping Kansas City to start this week and have allowed 3 runs or less in four of those five victories. This Rangers pitching staff that was getting lit up for the better part of May and early June seems to have found something of late and now they look to continue that success in a pitcher-friendly part in Minnesota. At better than 2-1 odds here, that's a risk worth considering at bare minimum.

Then we've got a Rangers offense who have scored 4+ in five of their last six overall and have a few guys in their lineup that have had success against the likes of Jose Berrios and Jake Odorizzi (Minnesota's weekend starters) throughout their careers. Taking a shot that they can get at least one of those two games isn't a horrible idea, especially if they can win on Friday in what is essentially a toss-up game with the odds sitting at -105 for Texas and -115 for Minnesota as of this writing. Without question the value is there on Texas to take them at this price this weekend and for someone who is never shy about backing underdogs, this is a spot I've got to jump on.

Best Bet: Texas Rangers to win series (+215)

As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down

*Number of games won in brackets

                            Philadelphia (1) vs Washington (2)
New York Yankees (2) vs Tampa Bay (1)
                            Seattle (1) vs Boston (2)
                            Detroit (1) vs Cleveland (2)
Baltimore (2) vs Atlanta (1) – Baltimore's a juicy underdog if you can stomach the risk
Kansas City (1) vs Houston (2)
                            Miami (1) vs Colorado (2)

                              • Bellinger's grand slam lifts Dodgers over Mets for 5-2 win
                                June 22, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the sinking New York Mets 5-2 on Friday night behind Alex Wood's effective pitching.

Yasiel Puig added a solo home run in the ninth, and the defending NL champions won their 10th straight against the Mets dating to May 2016. Los Angeles has outscored New York 75-20 in those games, winning each of the past eight by at least three runs - a first in Dodgers history against any opponent, according to STATS.

Wood (3-5) outdueled Zack Wheeler (2-6), allowing two runs and six hits in six innings to win his second consecutive start. The left-hander with the funky delivery struck out seven and walked one.

Kenley Jansen fanned two in a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

New York wasted a dazzling catch by center fielder Michael Conforto that saved a run in the third. After starting the season 11-1, the Mets lost for the 21st time in 27 games to fall a season-worst 11 games under .500.

                                RED SOX 14, MARINERS 10

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez homered and drove in five, and Boston rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Seattle despite a monster game from Nelson Cruz.

Cruz had a pair of three-run homers and drove in seven, but the Mariners still lost their season-worst fifth straight game, including three earlier this week at Yankee Stadium. Seattle led 4-0 and 10-5 before a wild Red Sox rally fueled by RBIs from eight different players.

Martinez went 4 for 5, including a two-run homer in the sixth and two doubles.

Reliever Matt Barnes (1-2) got the win with one scoreless inning. Juan Nicasio (1-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits in one-third of a lousy seventh inning.

The only flaw to the second half of the game for Boston: shortstop Xander Bogaerts left in the seventh with a sprained index finger on his left hand.

                                ORIOLES 10, BRAVES 7, 15 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Manny Machado hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 15th inning after each team staged dramatic ninth-inning rallies.

The Braves surrendered six runs in the ninth, and then scored four times in the bottom of the inning.

Peter Moylan, Atlanta's eighth pitcher, hit Craig Gentry to open the 15th. Gentry moved to second on Austin Wynns' sacrifice.

With first base open, the Braves pitched to Machado and the slugger lined his 19th homer into the Orioles' bullpen. Moylan (0-1) gave up another run on singles by Colby Rasmus and Jonathan Schoop.

Mike Wright Jr. (1-0), Baltimore's seventh pitcher, threw two scoreless innings.

                                REDS 6, CUBS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a go-ahead homer off Jose Quintana in the fifth inning, and Cincinnati held on for its fifth straight victory.

The Reds have won the first two games in the series, a recent rarity in the rivalry. It's only the second time in the last two years that they've won back-to-back games in a series against the Cubs. Chicago is 43-21 against Cincinnati over the last four seasons.

Suarez's two-run shot in the fifth inning off Quintana (6-6) gave him a team-high 16 homers and put the Reds ahead 4-3.

Javier Baez drove in a run with a bunt single off Luis Castillo (5-8), and Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run homer, his third in four games. Castillo went 5 2/3 innings for his first victory since May 24, ending a streak of four straight losses.

Raisel Iglesias retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

                                BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered to break up rookie Jack Flaherty's no-hit bid in the seventh inning, then homered again in the ninth to lift Milwaukee over St. Louis.

Both teams got just three hits. The benches and bullpens briefly cleared in the eighth after Eric Sogard slid into St. Louis shortstop Yairo Munoz, who caught a wide throw on a bunt play in the eighth.

Cardinals reliever Bud Norris (3-2) started the ninth by striking out Travis Shaw. Aguilar followed with a drive an opposite-field drive to right for his 16th home run.

Corey Knebel (1-0) pitched the ninth for the NL Central leaders.

                                PHILLIES 12, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Odubel Herrera homered for the fifth straight game and finished with four hits, helping Philadelphia rout Washington.

Herrera hit a tiebreaking two-run shot in the third for his 13th homer, matching the club record for consecutive games with a long ball. He has connected in six of his last seven overall.

Herrera is hitting .472 (17 for 36) with six homers, 11 runs and 10 RBIs in his last eight games.

Carlos Santana homered and drove in four runs for Philadelphia, which has won five of six. Santana delivered a two-run single in the first, a two-run homer in the sixth and walked twice.

Zach Eflin (5-2) allowed baserunners in every inning except the first, but limited the damage to two runs over five innings to win his fourth straight start.

Washington's Tanner Roark (3-8) gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

                                RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG. Fla. (AP) - Six Tampa Bay pitchers combined on a five-hitter, and Tampa Bay beat New York.

Utilizing a bullpen day, the Rays improved to 14-31 against teams with a .500 or better record with the victory over the team with the majors' best record.

Winner Ryan Yarbrough (6-3) entered in the second and allowed one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Sergio Romo worked the ninth for his fifth save in nine chances.

Willy Adames put the Rays ahead 1-0 with a run-scoring single off CC Sabathia (4-3) in the fourth. Sabathia allowed two runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

                                ANGELS 2, BLUE JAYS 1

ANAHEIM (AP) - Andrew Heaney (4-5) pitched seven solid innings in another quality start, allowing just one run and nine hits. The left-hander has gone at least seven innings in three of his last four starts.

The Angels got on the scoreboard with a two-run first inning, giving Heaney all the support he would need. Justin Upton drew a two-out walk and Albert Pujols doubled him in. Luis Valbuena singled in Pujols from second to give the Angels a 2-0 lead.

Cam Bedrosian threw a perfect eighth in relief, and Blake Parker pitched a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save.

Marco Estrada (4-7) had a fine start, too. He allowed just two earned runs and three hits in seven innings and struck out seven.

                                RANGERS 8, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Mike Minor threw six solid innings, Shin-Soo Choo homered and Texas beat Minnesota for its sixth consecutive victory.

Bouncing back from a rough May, Minor (5-4) has thrown three straight quality starts for the first time since throwing six straight in 2014 for Atlanta. He allowed one run and three hits, lowering his ERA for June to 2.84.

Choo's two-run shot off Fernando Romero (3-3) made it 4-0 in the fifth. It was his second homer on Texas' six-game road trip.

Minor faced the minimum number of batters through five innings despite a first-inning single by Brian Dozier to deep left. Dozier tried to stretch for second, but Joey Gallo had a good jump and easily threw him out to end the inning.

                                DIAMONDBACKS 2, PIRATES 1, 13 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ketel Marte's two-out single in the 13th inning led Arizona to a victory over Pittsburgh.

Marte's liner into center field off Tyler Glasnow (1-2) scored Jon Jay from second base as the NL West-leading Diamondbacks won for the fourth time in five games. Jay walked to start the rally, then advanced to second on a two-out wild pitch before Marte followed an intentional walk to David Peralta with his winning hit.

Andrew Chafin (1-0) pitched one scoreless inning for the win, and T.J. McFarland notched the first save of his six-year career with a perfect 13th.

The game was scoreless until both teams scored an unearned run in the 11th following a pitcher's duel between Arizona's Patrick Corbin and Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova.

                                ROYALS 1, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Rosell Herrera kept the game scoreless with a home-run robbery in the eighth inning and hit an RBI triple in the ninth, and struggling Kansas City beat Houston.

Herrera helped the Royals end a nine-game skid by bringing back Alex Bregman's would-be homer. The right fielder reached over the short outfield wall to snag the first out in the eighth.

Adalberto Mondesi then singled off Ken Giles (0-2) to start the ninth, stole second and took third on a flyout by Whit Merrifield. Herrera then sent a ball to center field to score Mondesi and make it 1-0.

Danny Duffy pitched six innings of two-hit ball for the Royals, and the bullpen didn't allow another knock. Justin Grimm (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and Tim Hill threw a perfect ninth for his first save.

                                ROCKIES 11, MARLINS 3

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray struck out 12 in seven dominant innings, Nolan Arenado homered in a six-run fourth, and Colorado won its fourth in a row by beating Miami.

It was Gray's 12th career 10-plus strikeout game and the fourth this season. He had at least two strikeouts in five of his innings, including striking out the side in the sixth. Gray (7-7) walked none and withstood a solo homer in the third by Derek Dietrich, who drove a 2-0 pitch the opposite way into the left-field bleachers.

Wei-Yin Chen (2-4) matched Gray through three innings, but then ran into trouble in the fourth - some of it not of his own doing. Second baseman Starlin Castro bobbled the ball after getting a relay throw, allowing Ian Desmond to score from third with the first of the Rockies' six runs in the inning.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Shane Bieber struck out nine in a career-high seven innings, Yonder Alonso hit a grand slam and Cleveland beat Detroit for its fifth straight victory.

Bieber became the third Indians pitcher with six or more strikeouts in his first three big league appearances, joining Herb Score (eight in 1955) and Luis Tiant (three in 1964).

Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers (5-4) surrendered four runs in five innings. He has one win in his last seven starts.

The White Sox bounced back after getting pounded behind a pair of three-run homers by Franklin Barreto in the first game. They stopped their worst skid since a nine-game rut last July and ended Oakland's season-high win streak at five.
