  • Friday’s 6-pack

Over/under totals for TD passes thrown this season:

    27.5— Carson Wentz

    26.5— Kirk Cousins

    22.5— Alex Smith

    21.5— Patrick Mahomes

    20.5— Case Keenum

    3.5— Nick Foles

    Quote of the Day
“Beth Bowlen Wallace is not the only Bowlen child who is expressing interest in becoming controlling owner. The trustees have informed Beth of their determination that she is not capable or qualified at this time. We will continue to follow Pat Bowlen’s long-standing succession plan for the future ownership of the Denver Broncos.”
From the trust of Broncos’ owner Pat Bowlen; this sounds like a mess

    Friday’s quiz
Where did Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr play his college basketball?

    Thursday’s quiz
Nevada coach Eric Musselman was once head coach of both Golden State and Sacramento.

    Wednesday’s quiz
When Detroit Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford played HS ball in Texas, Clayton Kershaw was the center on their football team.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

    13) Sports betting starts in Delaware Tuesday; a vote is scheduled in New Jersey for Thursday and when that passes, it’ll start in the Garden State soon after that.

    12) In 1971, Nike changed its name from Blue Ribbon Sports to Nike; a college student named Carolyn Davidson designed the now-famous swoosh logo. She was paid $35 and a few shares of Nike stock for her artwork. She should’ve held out for more.

    11) A televangelist from Louisiana says Jesus has asked his followers to buy a new private jet- this one costs a mere $54M. The guy already has three other jets. Oy.

    10) Shohei Ohtani in day games: 4-0, 2.18, Angels won all five of his home starts.

Shohei Ohtani in night games: 0-1, 5.84, Angels lost two of his three road starts.

    9) Former NFL coach Mike Martz will coach the San Diego team in the new AAF next spring, which means San Diego will score a lot of points and waste a lot of timeouts.

    8) Joe Namath turned 75 years old this week; QB of the Jets who won Super Bowl III that made the AFL-NFL merger happen. Namath became a hideously overrated player because he won a title for a team in New York City- the playoff games he won that year were the only playoff games he ever won, but he also turned out to be a really nice guy who is always pleasant with fans and is a really good ambassador for the game.

    7) There was an odd play early in the Phillies-Dodgers game Thursday; Mikael Franco tried to score from second on a single, the throw bounced away from the catcher, but Franco never touched home plate, in fact, he never came close to touching it.

No one said anything, the run scored and the game went on.

    6) Carlos Torres was the ump for the Rays-A’s game Thursday; someone needs to tell him to call some damn strikes. He was squeezing both pitchers badly; the game is better if the ball is in play more. Get the hitters swinging the bat.

    5) Baseball players get hurt a lot:
    — Cardinals P Alex Reyes (lat strain) goes on the DL
    — Clayton Kershaw will have an MRI on his back tomorrow.

    4) St. John’s poached Auburn transfer Mustapha Heron; with the Big East expected to be a little down next winter, Red Storm could make some noise in conference for first time in a while.

    3) Phillies 2, Dodgers 1— Bad news for LA; Clayton Kershaw’s back tightened up during this game and he’ll have an MRI on it.

    2) Warriors 124, Cavaliers 114— Golden State wins Game 1 in OT, overcoming Lebron James’ 51 points— he also had 8 rebounds, 8 assists.

This game didn’t sell out in Oakland, which is surprising. Golden State won, which isn’t surprising.

    1) JR Smith rebounded a missed free throw in a tie game with 0:04.7 left; instead of shooting the ball, he dribbled it out, thinking Cleveland was ahead by a point. Whoops.

Smith was -20 in his 38:00 on the court, the worst plus/minus of anyone in the game. In the 15:00 Smith sat out, the Cavaliers were +7.

A guy who has played 13 years in the NBA didn’t know the score of a tie game with 0:04.7 left. That not good, especially if you bet the under.

              • MLB betting: June good month/bad month starting pitchers

Clayton Kershaw made his first start in 30 days on the last day of May and should be ready to dominate the month of June like in the past.

If you think the Belmont Stakes is a long race for horses on the Triple Crown trail, wait until you get a load of MLB hurlers down the stretch in the month of June. It’s where many either hit a wall and fold-up, or find a second-gear and a become crucial cog in their team’s hopes of being in a pennant chase during the dogs days of summer.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s June list.

                GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians: 11-5 (5-2 Home)

After a tough May, Cleveland's Carrasco will try and get back on track like he usually does in June. What the Indians right-hander has to do is keep the ball in the park, because his WHIP of 1.11 is solid and so is his strikeout-to-walk numbers (70-16).

                * Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers: 13-4 (6-1 Home)

Clayton Kershaw made his first start in 30 days on the last day of May and should be ready to dominate the month of June like in the past. Though his numbers this season are not awful, they are not what we are used to seeing from the future Hall of Famer. His fastball location has been inconsistent and chances are he will get that resolved this month.

                * Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs: 12-5 (5-2 Home)

The Cubs Lester has pitched like an ace all year and his 2.71 ERA to this point is three-quarters of a run lower than his career average. He continues to mix his pitches which has kept opposing hitters off balance. The left-hander is one of those rare hurlers who hasn’t had a drop in production while losing a few miles per hour on the fastball now that he’s in his 30's.

Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox: 11-5 (6-1 Home)

In the prime of his career at 29, Sale is a beast. Thus far in 2018, opponents have a .193 batting average against him, compared to .220 in all prior years. One might think he would devour lefthander hitters, but because he can spot his mid to upper 90's heater on the outside cover and bury the slider on the hands of righties, they are at a feeble .180 average. Sale provides veryfew opportunities in most starts with a 5-to-1 K-to-W ratio.

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals: 8-3 (5-1 Home)

After a mediocre April, Strasburg got back on track last month and is ready for his typical stellar June. Over the years, the Nats right-hander has gone from hard fastball and big breaking curveball chucker to being able to spot the heater and have more angles on the breaking ball. That along with greater mental toughness has made him one of the premier starters in the National League.

                BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Jeremy Hellickson, Washington Nationals: 4-11 (1-6 Away)

Once being a good back of the rotation pitcher with Tampa Bay early in his career, Hellickson lost his ability to place his pitches where he wanted and has bounced around since. After two months hanging around Max Scherzer and Strasburg, the 31-year old has found a great groove. His 2.30 ERA after two months is a career-low, though he did have somewhat similar results in Arizona three years ago. Most will expect a return to normal results, but thus far Hellickson has been excellent. Stay tuned.

James Shields, Chicago White Sox: 4-9 (0-6 Away)

In the twilight of his career and on a bad club, Shields is winding down what was a quality career. Because his fastball has lost considerable velocity, the difference between that pitch and his change-up is no longer that great and hitters sit on the off-speed stuff. With less deception and 1.5 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Shields is now more hittable.

                • Friday's Diamond Notes
                  June 1, 2018

Hottest team: Indians (8-2 last 10)

There is finally a semblance of normalcy atop the AL Central with a team sitting in first place that owns a winning record. Cleveland led the division in May with a below .500 record, but the Tribe has turned things around by winning six consecutive games. The Indians followed up a three-game sweep of the last-place White Sox by holding off the Twins on Thursday, 9-8 at Target Field after squandering an 8-0 lead. Cleveland’s offense has stepped up in this stretch by scoring at least seven runs during each victory of this six-game hot streak.

Carlos Carrasco takes the mound on Friday for Cleveland as the Indians have won only three of his past eight starts. Carrasco yielded five earned runs in his last outing against the Astros, but Cleveland held off Houston, 8-6 to give the right-hander his first home win since April 11. In his first matchup with the Twins in Puerto Rico earlier this season, Carrasco turned in his best start of 2018 by tossing seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 extra-innings defeat.

Coldest team: Orioles (2-7 last nine)

Baltimore could use a break following a three-game sweep at the hands of rival Washington at home as the Orioles were washed out on Thursday. During its current five-game losing streak, Baltimore has scratched together only six runs, while getting blanked twice by Washington. The Orioles closed out May by winning only two series, while putting together a 4-13 record away from Camden Yards.

The O’s begin their series with the Yankees on Friday following Thursday’s postponement looking to replicate a series victory in the Bronx back in April. Andrew Cashner heads to the hill for Baltimore trying to improve on a 2-6 record and 5.07 ERA as the right-hander allowed 11 hits and five earned runs in five innings of work at Tampa Bay his last time out in a 5-1 defeat. Cashner defeated the Yankees as a hefty +230 underdog on April 5 in a 5-2 triumph by scattering two hits and allowing one earned run in six solid innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Miles Mikolas, Cardinals (6-0, 2.58 ERA)

Even though Washington ace Max Scherzer is the early favorite to capture another National League Cy Young award, Mikolas is a nominee for the top pitching prize. St. Louis has won eight of his 10 starts this season, including a 6-4 road victory against Pittsburgh his last time out. Mikolas faces the Pirates again on Friday, as he allowed four earned runs against Pittsburgh after giving up three earned runs in his previous four starts combined.

Coldest pitcher: Zack Wheeler, Mets (2-4, 5.40 ERA)

New York won three of Wheeler’s first four starts this season, but are winless in his past five outings. In three of those defeats during this cold stretch, Wheeler has been tagged for 18 earned runs, including allowing four earned runs in six innings in an 8-7 loss to the Brewers his last time out. The Mets haven’t helped out Wheeler much during this span, by scoring one run in three of his past four appearances. To make matters worse, the Mets own an 0-4 record in Wheeler’s four starts at Citi Field this season, as New York continues its home series with the Cubs.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (6-1-1 last eight on road)

Toronto continues its road swing after getting swept at Boston as the Jays travel to Detroit. The Red Sox knocked around the Blue Jays by scoring 22 runs on Toronto in three games at Fenway Park, while cashing the OVER all three times. The Jays have allowed at least five runs in five of the past eight games away from Rogers Center, and five runs or more in six of the previous eight contests overall. Jaime Garcia has received a total of three runs of support in his past two starts for Toronto, while the OVER has hit in three of the left-hander’s five starts on the highway.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (8-2 last 10)

Although Oakland is coming off an OVER against Tampa Bay on Thursday, the A’s have been cashing UNDERS as a furious pace. In Thursday’s 7-3 victory over the Rays, Oakland led 3-0 heading into the seventh inning on an 8 total, and 7-0 going to the ninth. Tampa Bay scored three runs in the ninth to spoil Oakland’s five-game UNDER streak. The A’s avoided the four-game sweep as Oakland bounced back after scoring a total of three runs in the first three losses to Tampa Bay. In fact, the A’s pushed across 15 runs in the first nine games of their homestand prior to Thursday’s outburst. Oakland heads to Kansas City on Friday as right-hander Frankie Montas makes his second start after silencing the Diamondbacks in a 2-1 victory last Sunday.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Astros

Boston and Houston hooked up in the American League Division Series last season as the Astros knocked out the Red Sox in four games. In the first meeting of 2018, the Astros topped the Red Sox, 4-2 on Thursday night as hefty -200 favorites. Lance McCullers, Jr. tossed six innings for Houston, while the Astros broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to end a two-game losing streak.

Boston’s three-game winning streak was snapped in the loss as the Red Sox send out their ace on Friday. Chris Sale tries to rebound from his worst performance of the season in last Sunday’s 7-1 home loss to the Braves as a -235 favorite. Sale was knocked out around for six runs in 4.1 innings, but the Red Sox have not lost consecutive starts made by the southpaw this season. In last season’s ALDS, Sale gave up three home runs and seven runs in five innings of an 8-2 defeat at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros counter with one of their top guns on the mound as Gerrit Cole seeks his sixth win of the season. Cole picked up a no-decision in his previous outing at Cleveland as the Astros squandered a five-run ninth inning lead in a 10-9 defeat. Although Houston couldn’t hold on, the Astros own a solid 9-2 record when Cole takes the mound this season, while striking out at least eight batters on nine occasions.

Betcha didn’t know: The Rays are going back to their bullpen by committee to start a game on Friday as Tampa Bay travels to Seattle. Sergio Romo will be making his fifth start since May 19, but the right-hander hasn’t lasted more than four outs in any of his first four starts. The Rays own a 2-2 record in games with this different philosophy, as Romo allowed three runs in the first inning of his last start against Baltimore, but Tampa Bay bounced back for an 8-3 win.

Biggest public favorite: Angels (-165) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+105) at Astros

Biggest line move: Athletics (-115 to -130) at Royals

                        — Cavaliers 30-1— Oddsmakers obviously think Lebron is leaving town

                        **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                        13) Somewhere in this great country of ours Saturday night, someone bet the under on the Cubs-Mets game; deGrom vs Montgomery was the pitching matchup.

Game was 1-1 after the 13th inning; total was 7.5. Under looked like a winner.

Then the Cubs scored six runs in the 14th inning. Gambling is difficult.

                        12) Since start of 2016 season, most starts of 5+ innings with one or fewer runs allowed:
                        Lester 36, Verlander 32, Scherzer 31, deGrom 29

                        11) AL East:
                        Boston
New York 1 GB— Have played six fewer games than the Red Sox.

                        10) AL Central
Cleveland— No Wild Cards from this division
                        Detroit 2.5 GB
                        Minnesota 3.5

                        9) AL West
Seattle— Second place in this division is a probable Wild Card
                        Houston 1 GB
                        Angels 5.5
                        A’s 6.5— A’s are 10-19 vs division rivals, 21-10 against everyone else.

                        8) NL East
                        Braves
Nationals 1.5 GB— Daniel Murphy is expected back soon.
                        Phillies 3

Phillies are the first team EVER to score only one run in a three-game series, with the only run scoring on a home run by a pitcher.

                        7) NL Central
Brewers— They’re 12-14 vs division rivals, 25-9 vs everyone else.
                        Cubs 2
                        Cardinals 3.5
                        Pirates 6.5

                        6) NL West
Diamondbacks— Interesting race, but all these teams are struggling
                        Rockies 1.5 GB
Dodgers 2.5— Dodgers can buy talent (Manny Machado??) at trade deadline
                        Giants 2.5
                        Padres 5.5

                        5) In 12 of Seattle’s last 16 home games, the winning run scored after the 6th inning. Mariners are 6-0 in extra inning games this year, as they compete for a playoff spot.

                        4) Over is 13-2 in Oakland’s last fifteen series openers; not sure why. A’s last eight home series openers all went over, even though the A’s don’t hit nearly as well at home.

                        3) Diamondbacks have been held to six or fewer hits in 30 of their first 58 games; no one else has more than 25 such games.

Last time a team went a whole season with more games of six of fewer hits than games with 7+ hits? The 1910 White Sox.

                        2) Braves 4, Nationals 2— Charlie Culbertson hit a walk-off tater for his 8th career home run; four of his eight career homers have been walk-off homers.

1— Late Friday night in Denver, according to police, an FBI agent did a back flip in a club, dropped his gun and accidentally shot someone.

                        Oy.

                              • LEADING OFF: Arrieta scolds Phils, Tigers pick 1st in draft
                                June 4, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                                AGITATED ARRIETA

The Phillies are off, and maybe that will give them time to address Jake Arrieta's frustration. The Philadelphia ace criticized his team's defensive positioning after a 6-1 loss Sunday that completed a three-game sweep by San Francisco.

''We're the worst in the league with shifts, so we need to change that,'' Arrieta said, adding, ''Use your eyes, make an adjustment and be better. We need some accountability all the way around. Everybody, top to bottom.''

The Phillies are 2-5 so far on a 10-game road trip. They're at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night to take on the Cubs.

                                DRAFT DAY

The Detroit Tigers have the overall No. 1 pick when the Major League Baseball draft begins. Among the top prospects are Auburn right-hander Casey Mize, Florida righty Brady Singer, Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart and Arizona high school lefty Matthew Liberatore. The Giants choose second, followed by the Phillies, White Sox and Reds. There will be two rounds on the first day, and a total of 40 rounds over three days.

                                WESTWARD HO-MER

David Peralta has homered in three straight games for Arizona, which opens a series at San Francisco. The Diamondbacks have won three in a row and moved back into the NL West lead. Zack Godley (4-3, 4.38 ERA) starts against Derek Holland (3-6, 4.94) and the Giants, who have four straight.

                                STREAKING

Atlanta star Freddie Freeman has a 16-game hitting string, the longest in the NL this season, going into the series opener at San Diego. Freeman is batting .375 during the streak.

                                WE GOT NEXT

Who do Detroit and Toronto play next? The same team, the Yankees. The Tigers host Luis Severino (8-1, 2.31) and New York in a doubleheader to make up two April rainouts, then the Yankees open a two-game series in Canada on Tuesday.
