CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Indians added a walk-off win to a streak that's had everything.

Jay Bruce hit an RBI double in the 10th inning as the Indians rallied for their 22nd straight win to extend their AL record, beating the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Thursday night to move within four wins of matching the 1916 New York Giants for the longest streak in major league history.

After blowouts, shutouts and oh-so-easy wins, the Indians, who tied it in the ninth on Francisco Lindor's two-out, two-strike RBI double, went into extras for the first time to keep the longest streak in 101 years intact.

Ramirez led off the 10th with a hard hit into right-center off Brandon Maurer (2-2) that he turned into a double with a head-first slide. After Edwin Encarnacion walked, Bruce, the recent arrival who hit a three-run homer in win No. 21 on Wednesday, ripped a 2-0 pitch into the right-field corner.

As Progressive Field shook like it usually does in October, Bruce reached second base and was quickly mobbed his teammates, who doused him with ice water and talcum powder while tearing the front of his jersey.

Cody Allen (3-6) got the win.

    WHITE SOX 17, TIGERS 7

DETROIT (AP) - Avisail Garcia went 5 for 5 and drove in a career-high seven runs, Yoan Moncada scored five times and Chicago pounded out 25 hits while routing Detroit.

The White Sox posted their highest hit total since getting 26 against Baltimore in 1981. The modern major league record for hits in a nine-inning game is 31, by Milwaukee in 1992 and the New York Giants in 1901.

Garcia and Moncada each homered. Moncada had four hits and walked twice - the rookie had a chance to become the first White Sox player to reach base seven times in a nine-inning game, but struck out in the ninth.

Jose Abreu added four hits for Chicago, which has won five of six. Detroit has lost six in a row.

James Shields (4-6) won for the first time on the road since May 12, 2016, a span of 18 starts.

Chad Bell (0-3) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.

    YANKEES 13, ORIOLES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Judge had a pair of three-run homers for a career-best six RBIs, Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer that chased Wade Miley with one out in a six-run first inning and New York routed fading Baltimore.

Judge hit an opposite-field drive over New York's bullpen in right-center in the fourth against Mike Wright, then lined a 448-foot drive into the second deck in left in the sixth off Rich Rodriguez. Judge has 43 homers and 96 RBIs, and with 27 homers at Yankee Stadium this year broke the ballpark's season record set by Curtis Granderson in 2012.

Masahiro Tanaka (12-11) won for the fourth time in five starts, allowing two solo homers in seven innings while striking out eight.

Miley (8-13) lasted 19 pitches as six of seven batters who faced him reached with hits. It was the shortest of his 194 big league starts.

    ASTROS 5, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Brad Peacock pitched six innings of three-hit ball and Houston lowered its magic number for clinching the AL West to three with a victory over second-place Los Angeles.

Yuli Gurriel had three hits and drove in a run for the Astros, who have a good chance to clinch a playoff spot and their first division title since 2001 at home this weekend against Seattle.

Peacock (11-2) had another strong start late in a season spent moving between the rotation and the bullpen, earning his first victory since Aug. 4.

Albert Pujols hit his 613th career homer in the ninth inning, breaking his tie with Jim Thome for seventh place in baseball history.

Ricky Nolasco (6-14) yielded four hits and two runs over six solid innings.

    CUBS 14, METS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo homered and had three hits, Jason Heyward went deep and drove in four and Chicago beat New York.

The Cubs' offense helped overcome a shaky debut by pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng to complete a three-game sweep.

Chicago outscored the Mets 39-14 this week after being outscored 20-3 in a weekend three-game sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kris Bryant added two RBIs as the Cubs extended their NL Central lead to three games over Milwaukee and St. Louis.

Tseng threw behind the first batter he faced, fell down while covering first base on the second batter for an error and later hit a batter with a pitch in the first inning. The 22-year-old from Taiwan went three innings, giving up five runs and five hits with six strikeouts.

Mike Montgomery (6-8) and Brian Duensing followed Tseng with two scoreless innings each.

Seth Lugo (6-5) was charged with eight runs, seven earned, with nine hits and a walk over three innings.

    TWINS 3, BLUE JAYS 2, 10 INNINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Byron Buxton's 10th-inning homer gave Minnesota its second straight walk-off victory.

A night after Eddie Rosario beat the San Diego Padres with a 10th-inning homer, Buxton connected off Toronto reliever Luis Santos (0-1) with two outs. Buxton's 15th homer reached the second deck in left field.

Dillon Gee (2-2) pitched one inning of relief for Minnesota, which earned its fifth walk-off win of the season and has won six of its past eight games. The Twins maintained their lead for the second AL wild card.

Justin Smoak had tied the game with a two-out homer in the ninth off Twins closer Matt Belisle.

    MARINERS 10, RANGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Nelson Cruz went 4 for 4 with a home run and Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer as Seattle defeated Texas.

The Mariners remained 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second AL wild card.

One night after making an unexpected appearance as a pinch hitter, Adrian Beltre was batting fourth as the designated hitter. This was just two weeks after suffering a Grade 2 strain in his hamstring and he was expected to miss at least four weeks, likely the remainder of the season.

Andrew Albers (5-1) pitched the final five innings and allowed three hits.

Rangers starter Andrew Cashner (9-10) allowed six hits, five runs, and walked five in 4 1/3 innings.

    NATIONALS 5, BRAVES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rookie Victor Robles was a part of a pair of two-run rallies, Tanner Roark pitched six strong innings and Washington beat Atlanta.

The Nationals salvaged the final game of the three-game set to earn their first victory since clinching the NL East on Sunday.

In his second career start, Robles, who entered the year as the top prospect in the Nationals' organization and made his major league debut last week, offered a few more glimpses of his coveted skillset.

The 20-year-old tripled to right-center in the fourth off Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz (10-13). He scored two batters later on Pedro Severino's grounder to make it 3-0.

Roark (13-9) at one point set down 12 in a row and did not yield a hit until Johan Camargo's two-out single in the fifth.

    PHILLIES 10, MARLINS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins homered again, Freddy Galvis and Jorge Alfaro also went deep in a seven-run second inning, and Philadelphia routed slumping Miami.

Hoskins' two-run shot gave him 18 home runs in 34 games since his call-up from Triple-A on Aug. 10. The Yankees' Gary Sanchez previously held the record for fastest to 18 homers. Sanchez needed 45 games.

Cesar Hernandez had four hits and Cameron Perkins also homered for the Phillies.

Jake Thompson (2-2) struck out six and allowed six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Thompson combined with relievers Ricardo Pinto, Kevin Siegrist, Hoby Milner and Yacksel Rios for the shutout.

Vance Worley (3-5) got a spot start for Miami, allowing eight runs in 1 1/3 innings.

    RED SOX 6, ATHLETICS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Drew Pomeranz pitched six innings of one-run ball, and Andrew Benintendi had three hits and drove in three runs to lead AL East-leading Boston over Oakland.

Christian Vazquez hit a solo homer and Mitch Moreland added an RBI double for the Red Sox, who have won six of eight.

Pomeranz (16-5) tied teammate Chris Sale and two others for the AL lead in victories.

Benintendi doubled high off the Green Monster, chasing Daniel Gossett (4-9) and making it 2-1 in the sixth.

    DIAMONDBACKS 7, ROCKIES 0

PHOENIX (AP) - A.J. Pollock had four RBIs for the second straight day, J.D. Martinez homered for the 10th time in 11 games and Arizona extended its NL wild-card lead by beating Colorado.

Zack Godley (8-7) pitched eight sharp innings as Arizona opened a five-game edge over Colorado atop the wild-card race. The Rockies lead Milwaukee and St. Louis by 2 1/2 games for the final playoff slot.

Pollock drove in four runs in an 8-2 win over the Rockies on Wednesday and added three more with a double in a five-run first inning against Chad Bettis (1-3).

    CARDINALS 5, REDS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Luke Weaver threw six innings of two-hit ball, Tommy Pham drove in two runs and stole two bases, and St. Louis topped Cincinnati.

The Cardinals have won five of six. They are 2 1/2 games behind Colorado for the second NL wild-card spot.

Weaver (6-1) allowed one unearned run, struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He's 3-0 with a 0.99 ERA through his first three starts in September.

Pham hit his 20th homer. With 21 stolen bases, he became the first Cardinals player to record a 20/20 season since Reggie Sanders in 2004.

Rookie Amir Garrett (3-8) took the loss.

    • MLB notebook: MLB suspends, fines Astros RHP Fiers
      September 14, 2017

Major League Baseball suspended Houston Astros pitcher Mike Fiers for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for throwing a fastball over the head of Los Angeles Angels batter Luis Valbuena on Wednesday.

The penalty was announced Thursday, and Fiers is not appealing, so the penalty starts in Thursday night's game between the Astros and Angels.

In Wednesday's game, Fiers threw a pitch about four feet over Valbuena's head, and the ball sailed to the backstop. It was Valbuena's first at-bat after hitting his 20th home run, which he celebrated with a big bat flip.

--The Boston Red Sox activated David Price from the 10-day disabled list and declared the left-hander will be used out of the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Price has been sidelined since July 28 with left elbow inflammation.

The 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner began the season on the disabled list with a left elbow strain before returning on May 29. He posted a 5-3 mark with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts before making another trek to the disabled list.

--The Cleveland Indians activated All-Star left-handed reliever Andrew Miller off the disabled list.

Miller last pitched on Aug. 21 due to tendinitis in his right knee.

The 32-year-old Miller will be eased back into action before regaining his late-inning role. He is 4-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 48 games this season.

--Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez was activated from the 10-day disabled list and will start Thursday's game against the host Texas Rangers.

Hernandez has been sidelined since Aug. 5 with right shoulder bursitis.

The 2010 American League Cy Young Award winner owns a 5-4 mark with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this season.

      • LEADING OFF: Price to bullpen, lots at stake for Cards-Cubs
        September 14, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

        CLEVELAND ROCKS

The record-breaking Indians try for their 23rd straight win when they host Kansas City. Cleveland already has set the AL mark for the longest winning streak ever and now owns the second-best success string in major league history. Next up is the all-time record of 26 in a row by the 1916 New York Giants. Trevor Bauer (16-8) starts for the Indians - he's won nine straight decisions, and will aim to tie for the big league lead in victories. Jason Vargas (15-10) pitches for the Royals.

        HIGH-PRICED RELIEF

David Price is back with the AL East-leading Red Sox, but not in his usual role. The left-hander, in Year Two of a seven-year, $217 million deal with Boston, was activated from the disabled list Thursday and will work out of the bullpen for now. The 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner also started the season on the disabled list and is 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts. He hasn't made a regular season relief appearance since 2010.

        RIVALRY RENEWED

After being mired in third place for much of the year, the Cardinals have a chance to jump atop the NL Central this weekend at Wrigley Field. St. Louis has won 11 of 14 and can catch Chicago with a sweep in the three-game series. Cardinals righty Carlos Martinez (11-10, 3.33 ERA), who's 1-1 with a 3.19 ERA in four career starts at Wrigley, pitches against John Lackey (11-11, 4.65) in the opener.

        FISH OUT OF WATER

The Marlins will open a three-game series against the Brewers that was moved from Marlins Park to Milwaukee because of Hurricane Irma. Miami had lost four in a row and 14 of 16 entering Thursday night's game in Philadelphia, and it won't play its first true home game since Irma until Monday against the Mets. Family members have accompanied the team on its trip, and they're expected to go to Milwaukee as well.

        PAX IS BACK

James Paxton is set to return from the disabled list to start the opener of Seattle's series at Houston. Paxton has been out since early August with a strained left pectoral muscle, but he had won seven consecutive decisions before going down. It's a familiar story for the Canadian left-hander. He has been on the DL three times since the start of August 2016, but in 29 starts over that span, he's 15-5 with a 2.93 ERA.

          • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

            — Boise State 28, New Mexico 14— Lobos with the back-door cover.

            — White Sox 17, Tigers 7— Avasail Garcia went 5-5, had 7 RBI for Chicago.

            — Phillies 10, Marlins 0— Miami sat Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich, and it showed.

            — Indians 3, Royals 2 (10)— Cleveland ties game in 9th, wins it in 10th- their 22nd win in a row.

            — Texans 13, Bengals 9— Deshaun Watson won his first NFL start on his 22nd birthday; he had a 49-yard TD run for the game’s only touchdown.

            — Cincy is first NFL team since 1939 to play their first two games at home and not score a TD in either game.

            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend……..

            13) New England’s defense looked slow against the Chiefs; now they visit Bourbon Street and a Saints team that scored only one TD in five red zone drives at Minnesota Monday.

            12) Clemson won its last three games with Louisville, but they’ve all been close. Tigers shut down Auburn 14-6 last week, holding them to 117 yards— impressive display of defense.

            11) The two rookie QB’s who are starting both get their first NFL road start this week. Deshaun Watson started at Cincinnati Thursday; DeShone Kizer starts at Baltimore- the Ravens forced five turnovers in their win at Cincinnati LW.

            10) Oklahoma State beat Pitt 45-38 LY, scoring game-winning TD with 1:28 left; now they visit a Pitt squad that got crushed by Penn State LW, after needing OT to beat I-AA Youngstown.

            9) Andy Reid welcomes his old team, the Eagles, to Arrowhead, with both teams coming off of sold road wins. Kansas City’s offense looked explosive as hell against the Patriots. Philly ended a 5-game skid against their rival Redskins. This will be one of the week’s better games.

            8) Minnesota won 48-14 at Oregon State last week; Gophers threw 8 passes in the whole game, which is very 70’s-ish. Middle Tennessee won SU at Syracuse LY, a big win for them.

            7) Should be lot of Illinois people in the Tampa Bay area this weekend, with Illinois playing South Florida Friday night and the Bears visiting the Bucs Sunday. Hopefully life is returning to some degree of normalcy in all of Florida; if not now, then soon.

            6) Baylor has sunk quickly, losing their first two games to Liberty/UTSA; now they’re a 14-point underdog at Duke, which just doesn’t look right on my notepad, but it is.

            5) Chargers play their first game in that soccer stadium in Carson,, CA, their temporary home for the next three years, until they move into the new domed stadium in Inglewood that they’ll share with the Rams. Miami practiced in California this week; after the game they go back to south Florida and try to resume normal life, after the hurricane.

            4) Wyoming QB Josh Allen didn’t fare too well against Iowa, now the Oregon Ducks come to Laramie, giving the Cowboys a rare home game against a Power 5 opponent.

            3) Green Bay’s defense played really well LY; now thy christen Atlanta’s new dome, after they lost to the Falcons twice LY, including a playoff game. Excellent Sunday night game.

            2) Missouri is a 7-point favorite over Purdue, despite losing at home to South Carolina LW and then firing their defensive coordinator, after only two games. Maybe it was all his fault?!?!?!

            1) Odell Beckham’s agent hopes the Giants’ offense struggles again this week, so guys on TV can blame everything short of the hurricanes on his contract issues. Beckham doesn’t block for a living, which is the Giants’ biggest problem right now.

                      • MLB roundup: Royals end Indians' 22-game win streak
                        September 15, 2017

CLEVELAND -- Lorenzo Cain had three hits and Alcides Escobar and Brandon Moss homered as the Kansas City Royals halted the Cleveland Indians' American League-record 22-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory Friday night.

It's Cleveland's first loss since Aug. 23. The Indians' 22-game winning streak is the second longest in major league history. The 1916 New York Giants won 26 in a row.

Jason Vargas (16-10) gave up three runs on five hits in five innings to get the win for Kansas City. Mike Minor pitched the ninth to pick up his first major league save.

Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer (16-9) gave up four runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

                        Yankees 8, Orioles 2

NEW YORK -- Luis Severino tied a career high by pitching eight innings while Didi Gregorius homered and drove in four runs, leading New York to a victory over Baltimore.

Severino (13-6) allowed two runs on three hits and little else while improving to 8-2 in 12 starts since the All-Star break. He struck out seven and walked one while throwing 95 pitches.

It was the third time Severino completed eight innings. He also did it April 18 vs. the Chicago White Sox and May 24 against the Kansas City Royals.

                        Tigers 3, White Sox 2

DETROIT -- Mikie Mahtook grounded an RBI single up the middle to score rookie Jeimer Candelario with two outs in the ninth inning as Detroit snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Chicago.

Candelario drew a walk off former Tiger Al Alburquerque (0-2) with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Collins, whose fifth home run of the season in the seventh gave Detroit a brief 2-1 lead, walked on a 3-2 pitch by lefty reliever Aaron Bummer.

Juan Minaya relieved and moved the runners up with a wild pitch before Mahtook delivered his game-winning single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch. It was his first career walk-off hit.

                        Athletics 4, Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA -- Starter Daniel Mengden, backed by two early home runs, turned in the most dominant outing of his young career, going the distance as Oakland blanked Philadelphia.

Though Mengden (1-1) entered Friday night with a 7.07 ERA in three big-league starts scattered over the course of the season, the 24-year-old right-hander absolutely shut down a Phillies offense that had put up 27 runs in its previous three games.

Mengden needed 118 pitches to throw his first career complete-game shutout, striking out seven -- including the last two batters he faced -- while giving up just two hits without issuing a walk.

                        Dodgers 7, Nationals 0

WASHINGTON -- Alex Wood allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings and was backed by three early home runs as Los Angeles crushed Washington in a showdown of first-place teams with the two best records in the National League.

The Dodgers, who had lost eight of their previous 10 outings, entered with a magic number of seven to clinch the NL West. The Nationals have lost three of four since clinching the NL East title Sunday.

Justin Turner, Yasiel Puig (2-for-4) and Corey Seager (three-run shot) each had home runs for the Dodgers in the first two innings.

                        Reds 4, Pirates 2

CINCINNATI -- Zack Cozart homered twice, Scott Schebler and Joey Votto each added a solo shot, and Homer Bailey allowed a run over five-plus innings, lifting Cincinnati to a victory over Pittsburgh in the opener of a three-game series.

Bailey (5-8), who returned this season after missing most of the past two seasons with injuries, walked two and struck out seven, helping the Reds improve to 11-6 versus the Pirates this season.

The Pirates have lost three straight games.

                        Blue Jays 4, Twins 3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Josh Donaldson and Kevin Pillar each hit solo homers, and J.A. Happ pitched into the seventh inning to propel Toronto to a win against Minnesota.

Donaldson had three hits and two RBIs as Toronto came out on top in another close game. The Blue Jays have played 17 one-run contests in their last 31 games, going 8-9 in that span.

Happ (9-10) surrendered three runs on seven hits. He walked five in 6 1/3 innings. Three relievers combined for 2 2/3 hitless innings and Roberto Osuna recorded his 36th save in 46 chances.

                        Braves 3, Mets 2

ATLANTA -- The Braves beat New York in Atlanta for just the sixth time in the past 22 games, as the bullpen preserved the victory for left-hander Sean Newcomb after the rookie took a hard-luck home loss to the same team in his major league debut.

Nick Markakis and Rio Ruiz each had two hits and Ozzie Albies extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double as the Braves won for the seventh time in their last nine games.

Newcomb (3-8) allowed six hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight, including five in a row during the fourth and fifth innings, and walked one while throwing 81 pitches.

                        Cubs 8, Cardinals 2

CHICAGO -- Kris Bryant went 3-for-4, including his 27th home run of the season, to help lead Chicago to a victory over St. Louis in the opener of a critical three-game series.

The victory was the fourth straight as Chicago extended its NL Central lead to four games over the Cardinals with 15 games to play. St. Louis dropped its second in three games.

Winning pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. (4-4) worked a scoreless sixth inning for the victory in place of right-handed starter John Lackey, who was ejected in the fifth after arguing home plate calls.

                        Astros 5, Mariners 2

HOUSTON -- Carlos Correa and Evan Gattis recorded multi-hit games, Charlie Morton delivered a quality start, and Houston inched closer to an American League West pennant with a victory over Seattle.

Houston jumped on Mariners left-hander James Paxton (12-4) for three first-inning runs in his return from a five-week stint on the disabled list.

Correa finished 2-for-4 while Gattis went 2-for-3 with a walk. Both recorded run-scoring hits in support of Morton (12-7), who allowed just one run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings. It marked the first time Morton worked at least six innings while allowing fewer than two runs since a 9-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 16.

                        Rockies 6, Padres 1

DENVER -- Colorado turned to Tyler Chatwood somewhat by default on Sept. 5 to be the No. 5 starter, and he has been getting better and better. He made his third start of the month and muffled San Diego.

Chatwood, who is eligible for free agency after the season, worked 5 2/3 innings and held the Padres scoreless until Wil Myers belted his career-high tying 28th homer to end Chatwood's 94-pitch outing.

The homer also halted Chatwood's scoreless streak at 13 innings since he returned to the rotation this month after not starting since Aug. 2. In his three starts, Chatwood is 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA.

                        Brewers 10, Marlins 2

MILWAUKEE -- Three home runs -- including a grand slam from Neil Walker -- sparked an eight-run rally in the eighth inning as Milwaukee erupted late for a victory over Miami.

Playing in front of a crowd of 19,369 after the series was shifted to Milwaukee from Miami because of Hurricane Irma, the Marlins got 4 2/3 innings out of Jose Urena.

The Brewers received yet another effective effort from the bullpen as they used seven relievers to cover eight innings behind Jeremy Jeffress, who went two innings in his first start as a big leaguer.

                        • MLB notebook: Red Sox, Yankees fined for sign-stealing
                          September 15, 2017

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees were both fined on Friday due to last month's incident of sign-stealing, major league baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced.

The Red Sox were fined an undisclosed amount for using an Apple Watch to steal signs during the Aug. 18-20 series while the Yankees were fined a lesser amount for the improper use of a dugout phone during a past season.

Major League Baseball also investigated a complaint that the Yankees made improper use of YES network to steal signs but found insufficient evidence to support the allegation.

--Seattle Mariners ace James Paxton was activated from the disabled list and will start Friday's game against the Houston Astros.

The left-hander has been sidelined five-plus weeks due to a pectoral injury suffered Aug. 10.

Paxton won seven consecutive decisions prior to the injury. He is 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA this season.

His return comes with the Mariners standing 3 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the American League's second wild-card spot.

--The Detroit Tigers acquired right-hander Elvin Rodriguez from the Angels to complete the deal that sent outfielder Justin Upton to Los Angeles.

Rodriguez, 19, went 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 14 starts split between Rookie-level Orem and Single-A Burlington. He was selected as the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year based on his 5-1 record and 2.50 ERA in 11 starts for Orem.

The Tigers made it clear that they were beginning a long rebuilding process with two trades at the end of August, sending Upton to the Angels and moving ace Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros for a package of prospects.
