CLEVELAND (AP) Unrelenting and unbeatable at the moment, the Cleveland Indians refuse to lose.

With their latest overpowering win, they extended baseball's longest winning streak since 2002 to 19 games with an 11-0 blowout of the Detroit Tigers on Monday night to move closer to a record that has stood for 101 years.

Francisco Lindor tripled home three runs off rookie Myles Jaye (0-1) in the second inning, and the Indians, who haven't lost since Aug. 23, added another blowout to their growing list of lopsided conquests.

The defending AL champions aren't just rolling, they're steamrolling opponents, outscoring them 132-32 during a stretch that includes six shutouts.

Carlos Carrasco (15-6) struck out nine in six innings, Lindor had four RBIs and Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer as the Indians lowered their magic number to clinch the Central to six.

    YANKEES 5, RAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - In the start of a series moved from Florida to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, Todd Frazier capitalized on Trevor Plouffe's two-out error with a three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning that led New York over Tampa Bay.

Jacoby Ellsbury broke Pete Rose's major league record by reaching base on catcher's interference for the 30th time, and David Robertson (8-2) pitched a career-high 2 2/3 innings in relief of CC Sabathia, removed with two on and one out in the fifth. Ellsbury was struck by Jake Odorizzi (8-8)

Opening a stretch that has 17 of their final 20 games in New York, the Yankees closed within three games of Boston in the AL East and opened a four-game lead over Minnesota for the top AL wild card. The Rays dropped four games behind the Twins with 17 remaining.

    RANGERS 5, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Delino DeShields homered after taking a speedier trip around the bases for an earlier run as Texas beat Seattle in the opener of a four-game series matching teams still hoping to get an AL wild card.

Cole Hamels (10-3) struck out seven in six innings to win for the first time in his last four starts.

DeShields reached on a one-out bunt single in the second, when he was initially called out before a replay challenge overturned the call. DeShields then raced home from first on Shin-Soo Choo's two-run double that made it 4-1, running through a stop sign from fill-in third-base coach Jason Wood and scoring on a nifty headfirst slide.

Two innings later, DeShields hit his fifth homer.

Alex Claudio worked a perfect ninth to get his eighth save in 12 chances.

Mariners starter Ariel Miranda (8-7) allowed gave up six hits and walked three in only 1 2-3 innings.

    BLUE JAYS 4, ORIOLES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Ryan Goins hit a solo home run, Marco Estrada won his third straight decision and Toronto beat slumping Baltimore.

Darwin Barney had two hits and an RBI as the Blue Jays won their third straight and handed the Orioles their fifth consecutive defeat.

Mark Trumbo hit a solo homer for Baltimore, which entered three games back in the AL wild-card race.

Estrada (8-8) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. Dominic Leone pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-10) is winless in six starts.

    PIRATES 7, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Steven Brault and four relievers combined on a three-hitter to lift Pittsburgh over Milwaukee.

Milwaukee didn't get a runner past first base against the Pirates and fell 2+ games behind Chicago in the NL Central after outscoring the Cubs 20-3 in a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field over the weekend.

Brault (1-0), making his second start of the season, only allowed a fourth-inning walk to Ryan Braun and a fifth-inning leadoff single to Jesus Aguilar. He struck out six in six innings for his first major-league win.

Milwaukee rookie Brandon Woodruff (1-2), allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings.

    WHITE SOX 11, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jose Abreu had four hits, Adam Engel hit a three-run homer and the White Sox pounded the Royals.

Abreu, who hit for the cycle Saturday and had two home runs Sunday, drove in two and scored once while raising his average to .306. He was a homer shy of another cycle.

Engel went deep off Brandon Maurer during a six-run sixth.

Yolmer Sanchez, Yoan Moncada and Abreu, the first three White Sox hitters, combined to go 9 for 16 with six runs and four RBIs. Moncada had his first career three-hit game.

Reynaldo Lopez (1-3) gave up three runs and eight hits in six-plus innings to pick up his first victory since Sept. 29, 2016.

Royals starter Jason Hammel (8-11) was pulled after giving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

    ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Nolan Arenado's tie-breaking three-run home run in the eighth inning powered the Rockies to a win over the Diamondbacks.

The Rockies took the first game of a key four-game series between the National League wild-card leader, Arizona, and second-place Colorado. The Rockies moved four games behind the Diamondbacks and 3 1/2 ahead of St. Louis for the second wild card slot.

Arenado drove in four runs with a double and his 33rd home run of the season, and the Rockies won their seventh straight road game and fifth overall.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson, activated from the 60-day disabled list on Sunday, pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the victory. Anderson (4-5) allowed a hit with four strikeouts.

The Rockies' winning rally started with two outs in the eighth. D.J. LeMahieu tripled over the top of an extreme defensive shift toward right field and Carlos Gonzalez walked against Diamondbacks reliever Jake Barrett (1-1).

    • Tuesday’s six-pack

      — Missouri fired its defensive coordinator….two games into the season.

      — Cardinals’ RB David Johnson dislocated his wrist, needs an operation.

      — FIU/Indiana, Georgia Tech/UCF football games for Saturday were called off.

      — Indians 11, Tigers 0— Cleveland has now won 19 games in a row.

      — Rams signed P Johnny Hekker to a contract thru 2022.

      — Random fact: In terms of area, Jacksonville is the biggest city in the continental 48 states.

      ********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but………

      13) Watching these news stations put reporters in harm’s way during these storms, it bugs me. Why it is so important to put a human being out there in dangerous storms?

We know it is horrible weather; showing some poor soul trying to brave the elements to try and enhance their career is just plain stupid. Safety should matter for reporters, too.

      12) Last baseball team to go thru a 1-12 stretch and win the World Series that year? The 1914 Boston Braves, whose 1-12 skid was from April 24-May 16.

Dodgers are 1-15 in their last 16 games.

      11) Washington State’s quarterbacks Saturday:
      — Luke Falk was 24-34 for 194 yards
      — Tyler Hilinski was 25-33 for 240 yards and three TD’s.

That has to be the first time a team had two QB’s throw 30+ passes in the same game.

      10) Georgia’s game in South Bend Saturday was the furthest north they’ve played since a game at Michigan in 1965. Georgia fans travelled; Doug Flutie said on TV that the crowd was 50-50 split between Georgia fans and the home team.

      9) Friday night’s game with Milwaukee was first Cubs’ Friday home game ever played at nite.

      8) Indians’ winning streak has vaulted them ahead of Houston for top seed in the American League; if playoffs started today, Cleveland would play the Wild Card winner, Astros-Red Sox would be the other AL playoff series.

      7) Stephen Strasburg has now thrown 34 consecutive scoreless innings; I watched his start on Tuesday— looked like something was bothering him physically, but no one can score on him, and he gutted out his start and helped Washington win.

      6) For whatever reason, a high school football team from Miami played at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas this past Friday night, but they couldn’t get home because of the storm. Now they’re stuck in Las Vegas, which is a good place to be stuck. Bishop Gorman helped out with getting them a place to stay until they can go home.

      5) Kent State football coach Paul Haynes is back this week from medical leave he had taken to deal with prostate cancer. Hope he is feeling better.

      4) People on social media were going nuts because Beth Mowins was doing play-by-play of the Chargers’ game. So what? She’s been doing games on ESPN for years, usually the noon college game on ESPN2. She does a fine job, nothing surprising about it.

      3) Vikings 29, Saints 19— New Orleans was poor in the red zone; they kicked three FG’s that were shorter than 25 yards. Saints started the last three seasons 0-2/0-3/0-3— now they’re 0-1 and they’re playing New England on a short week Sunday.

      2) Broncos 24, Chargers 21— Chargers roared back from 24-7 deficit, but missed FG on last play of game that would’ve sent game to OT. Rex Ryan was disappointing as an ESPN analyst.

Philip Rivers hasn’t missed a game since 2006, which means that he is on the downside of his career. If the Chargers aren’t any good with him, what will they be like when he leaves? There is no decent young QB on the Charger roster. You say Cardale Jones? I say Buffalo didn’t want him, which immediately makes him a suspect.

      1) I’d much prefer having a Monday night NFL doubleheader every week to having a Thursday night game every week. Football wasn’t meant to be played on three days’ rest.

      • Dodgers In The Dumps
        September 11, 2017

Right now, the easiest way to make money in baseball is by betting against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ve gone an absolutely hideous 1-15 SU in their last 16 games, beating the lowly Padres.

Despite the fact that the NL West is all but assured to the Dodgers, there are many more panicking that the league’s top ranked World Series contender is taking lumps like this so late in the season.

The sudden and alarming downturn in the fortunes of the Dodgers hasn’t curtailed their World Series odds because much of the playoff picture has remained the same. The fact is that the Cubs, Nationals and Dodgers will remain at the top of the heap because they’re doing so well in their divisions.

BEST WORLD SERIES ODDS per BETONLINE.AG
        Los Angeles Dodgers +300
        Cleveland Indians +450
        Houston Astros +500
        Washington Nationals +700
        Chicago Cubs +800
        Boston Red Sox +800

The only real race in the National League is in the NL Central with Milwaukee and St. Louis trying their damndest to stay relevant behind the Cubs. The Brewers certainly did themselves plenty of favors, winning a three-game sweep over Chicago this past weekend, but the Cubs will most certainly level that out with a series against the Mets this week.

Making the playoffs and fixing their late season woes is probably not a big deal to the Dodgers, but don’t tell that to third baseman Justin Turner. "Regardless of what the record says, right now we're the worst team in baseball,” said Turner. "What we did three months ago doesn't mean a whole lot right now. No one in this league is going to feel sorry for us. No one in this league is going to show up and be like, 'Oh, poor Dodgers.'"

Nobody’s going to feel sorry for the Dodgers because they’re one of the most unlikable franchises in baseball since they spend the gross national product of Nicaragua on their roster.

Los Angeles has two series remaining against the San Francisco Giants, who have nothing to play for aside from ruining the lives of their division rivals. The Dodgers also run head first in to a road circuit against Washington, and have series against the Phillies, Padres and Rockies to cap off the season.

The one thing we know for certain is that the Dodgers aren’t a safe regular season play as we head towards October. They’re overpriced at BetOnline.ag to begin with in terms of the moneyline, and until they right the ship there’s no reason to invest in them further as a short term or long term wager.

They’re too good to be this bad for much longer, but the Astros and Indians are becoming much headier plays in the sportsbook as the Dodgers retain massive public appeal due to their record-setting season.

                  • Dodgers and Giants resume top of first inning at 10:50 p.m.
                    September 12, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers and Giants resumed their series opener at 10:50 p.m. Monday at AT&T Park after two separate delays for lightning and rain.

The first pitch Monday night was delayed 42 minutes because of a lightning storm that spectacularly lit up the sky beginning about an hour before the scheduled start time. The tarps were pulled amid sporadic showers, and rain continued to fall during a moment of silence in memory of Sept. 11. The game resumed at 7:57 p.m. but was put back in a delay after one out. The second delay lasted 2 hours, 52 minutes.

The NL West-leading Dodgers are trying to end a 10-game losing streak, tied for the franchise's worst since moving to Los Angeles.

The game resumed with Ty Blach taking over for Giants starter Chris Stratton. Kenta Maeda made his start for Los Angeles.

Rain, rallies, 11th straight loss for LA; game ends 2:10 am
                    September 12, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Dodgers rallied once, twice and then a third time. Manager Dave Roberts thought his club would snap out of its long losing streak at last.

The National League-leading Dodgers lost their 11th straight game for the longest skid since the club moved to Los Angeles, finishing their 8-6 defeat to the San Francisco Giants at 2:10 a.m. local time Tuesday morning after a pair of rain and lightning delays late Monday.

''It's disappointing because our guys played hard tonight, they really did,'' Roberts said. ''I thought that we were going to win that game. I thought we put ourselves in a position to win but we couldn't hold the lead.''

Hunter Pence hit a go-ahead single in the sixth for San Francisco against Pedro Baez (3-5).

Following a 42-minute delay ahead of first pitch, Curtis Granderson struck out against Chris Stratton, then the game immediately entered an even longer delay - this time for 2 hours, 52 minutes, before resuming at 10:50 p.m. local time.

The total delay time of 3:34 was more than the game time of 3:22. Roberts said his preference would have been a doubleheader but he understood it as a league decision, saying ''it was out of our hands.''

''This is obviously very uncharacteristic to start a game this late,'' he said.

Los Angeles, which has lost 16 of 17 overall, had its lead atop the NL over idle Washington trimmed to 3 1/2 games. The Dodgers travel to play the Nationals next.

The skid topped a pair of 10-game losing streaks in L.A. from 1961 and `92. The 1944 Brooklyn team lost 16 straight games. L.A. held a season-best 21-game division lead for four days and as recently as Aug. 25, but that has dwindled to nine games over Arizona.

''It's disappointing every time you lose,'' shortstop Corey Seager said. ''I thought tonight was better. We came back, got back in the game a couple times. Unfortunately we didn't win. Just got to get back to winning, that's about it. Nothing else about that.''

An announcement came on the scoreboard during a fourth-inning pitching change: The final BART trains would leave downtown locations at 12:20 a.m. ''God Bless America'' during the seventh-inning stretch came at 1:25 a.m.

And one devoted - or call it crazy - kayaker stayed out in the cove in his craft trying to retrieve baseballs into the wee hours. A hardy group of loyal fans stayed until the final out.

''In my mind I didn't think we were going to be playing tonight, once it started to get around 9:45,'' Giants center fielder Denard Span said. ''... Then we came out here and tried to battle our butts off.''

Ty Law (4-1) pitched the sixth for the win.

Yasiel Puig homered in the fifth and Los Angeles came back from down 4-0 but couldn't hold it.

Span splashed a two-run homer into McCovey Cove in the bottom of the first inning against Kenta Maeda. Span batted third for just the fourth time in his career and first this year as manager Bruce Bochy shook up his lineup after San Francisco was outscored 21-2 the past two games at the White Sox. It was his fifth career home run into McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall.

Jarrett Parker homered leading off the second for San Francisco.

Once the game resumed, Ty Blach was on the mound and Stratton's day was done - the shortest start of his career.

Sam Dyson, San Francisco's seventh reliever, pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

                    VOGELSONG RETIRING

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong will retire as a Giant on Sunday, when he will take the AT&T Park mound once more as San Francisco honors him.

The 40-year-old Vogelsong was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 1998 amateur draft and made his major league debut in their waterfront ballpark on Sept. 2, 2000, finishing his 12-year career 61-75 with a 4.81 ERA while pitching two stints each for San Francisco and Pittsburgh.

''He's done some great things for us, for the Giants,'' Bochy said. ''We're trying to do something special for him.''

                    TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: With Hyun-Jin Ryu being skipped in the rotation during the San Francisco series for extra rest, he was set to throw a simulated game of four or five innings Tuesday.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt is unlikely to play again this season because of a concussion and is still unable to do baseball activities. ''I would be surprised at this point,'' Bochy said.

                    UP NEXT

LHP Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 2.15 ERA) makes his third start for the Dodgers since coming off the disabled list with a lower back strain, having gone 20-9 with a 1.62 ERA in in 39 career games and 38 starts against San Francisco. Kershaw lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last start against Colorado on Sept. 7. RHP Johnny Cueto (7-7, 4.43) also makes his third start since coming off the DL.

                        September 12, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Indians share a record with a team celebrated by Hollywood.

                        ''Moneyball'' has its sequel.

Following a familiar script of scoring first, playing strong defense and riding dominant pitching, the Indians extended their winning streak to 20 games and matched the AL mark held by the 2002 Oakland Athletics, beating the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Cleveland's streak, which began on Aug. 24 in Boston, is tied for the majors' second-longest in 82 years - and the Indians show no signs of stopping.

Corey Kluber (16-4) strengthened his Cy Young Award case with a five-hitter as Cleveland joined the 2002 A's, 1935 Chicago Cubs (21) and 1916 New York Giants (26) as the only teams since 1900 to win at least 20 in a row.

Francisco Lindor homered leading off the first inning against Matthew Boyd (5-10), and Kluber sealed win No. 20 - and Cleveland's seventh shutout during the streak - by getting Miguel Cabrera on an easy grounder to third.

                        DODGERS 5, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Clayton Kershaw pitched NL-leading Los Angeles to its first win in nearly two weeks, helping the Dodgers snap the club's worst skid since moving West at 11 games.

Kershaw (17-3) took a share of the major league wins lead with Milwaukee's Zach Davies.

Kenley Jansen recorded the final four outs for his 37th save but surrendered three straight singles with one out in the ninth to face a bases-loaded jam. He struck out Buster Posey and Nick Hundley to end it. Catcher Yasmani Grandal pumped his right fist and Jansen pounded his chest as the Dodgers hustled out of their dugout.

Justin Turner hit a key RBI double in the eighth and Chase Utley homered leading off the fourth, splashing into the water of McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall for the first time in his career - the 41st ever by an opposing hitter.

Johnny Cueto (7-8) struck out eight over 3 2/3 innings for the Giants, allowing four runs and six hits with four walks in his third start since coming off the disabled list.

                        BREWERS 5, PIRATES 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames hit his 29th home run, Domingo Santana went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.

The Brewers pulled within two games of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs who were playing the New York Mets.

Gerrit Cole (11-10) took his first loss in 10 road starts since the Atlanta Braves beat him 5-2 on May 22. He slipped to 8-1 away from PNC Park over that stretch after allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings. He tied his season-high with 10 strikeouts in his fifth start against Milwaukee this season.

Manager Craig Counsell turned to the bullpen to protect the 5-2 lead. Jeremy Jeffress, Oliver Drake, Jared Hughes, Anthony Swarzak and Josh Hader each turned in a scoreless inning. Jeffress (3-0) was the pitcher of record. Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his 35th save in 40 chances.

                        RED SOX 11, ATHLETICS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts hit two home runs and a two-run triple, and Boston rolled past Oakland.

The Red Sox, winners of five of their last six, pushed their American League East lead back to four games over the Yankees following New York's loss to 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

Betts went 3 for 5 with six RBIs. He's driven in three runs or more in a team-high 11 games.

The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the A's. They managed just one run and one hit off Eduardo Rodriguez (5-5), who struck out nine over six innings.

Sean Manaea (10-10) was pulled after giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

                        BRAVES 8, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit a three-run home run off Gio Gonzalez and Julio Teheran threw seven shutout innings as Atlanta cruised past Washington.

Gonzalez (14-7) allowed five earned runs and seven hits in five innings and struck out eight. The left-hander did guarantee his $12 million option for next season with his first out of the game as he reached 180 innings this season.

The Nationals, who clinched the division Sunday when the Braves came back to beat the Miami in extra innings, lost for just the second time in eight games. This loss kept them from closing the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Teheran (11-11) allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked two.

                        BLUE JAYS 3, ORIOLES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Richard Urena singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and Toronto handed slumping Baltimore its sixth straight loss.

Facing Orioles closer Zach Britton (2-1), who had recorded the final out of the eighth, Kevin Pillar drew a leadoff walk in the ninth and went to third on Teoscar Hernandez's single. One out later, Pillar scored when Luke Maile singled off the glove of third baseman Manny Machado.

Urena followed with a single to center. Darwin Barney raced around from second and slid home safely ahead of the throw from Adam Jones.

Blue Jays left-hander Tim Mayza (1-0) got one out for his first career win.

Tim Beckham homered for the Orioles.

                        RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Adeiny Hechavarria hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning off Sonny Gray and Tampa Bay, playing as the home team in a series relocated to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, beat the Yankees.

Tampa Bay has split the first two games of the set held at the home of the New York Mets.

The Rays will fly back to Florida immediately after Wednesday afternoon's game for firsthand looks at the storm damage. No word yet from MLB if Boston and Tampa Bay will play at Tropicana Field on Friday night as scheduled - the Rays expect to host the three-game set, but it could be reconfigured to give them an extra day off to handle personal matters.

Tommy Hunter (3-5) pitched one inning to give Tampa Bay, on the fringe of the AL wild-card race, its second win in six games. Alex Colome closed for his 44th save in 49 chances.

Gray (9-10) again pitched well but wound up with a loss. The Yankees, who hold the top AL wild-card spot, have dropped just three of their last 10.

                        ROYALS 4, WHITE SOX 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Brandon Moss hit a grand slam in the first inning for his third consecutive game with a homer, powering Kansas City past Chicago.

Scott Alexander worked out of a ninth-inning jam for his fourth save in six chances. He yielded a double to Adam Engel and a single to Yolmer Sanchez to lead off the ninth. He struck out Yoan Moncada, retired Jose Abreu on a pop to Whit Merrifield and got pinch hitter Matt Davidson on a grounder to end the game.

White Sox rookie Dylan Covey (0-5) walked the bases loaded before Moss drove a full-count fastball to right-center. It was Moss's fourth career grand slam and his first since July 24, 2014. He has nine RBIs in his past three games.

Sam Gaviglio (4-5) picked up his first Royals victory in his second start after being picked up on waivers Sept. 1 from Seattle.

                        ASTROS 1, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched eight innings of one-hit ball in a stellar second start for Houston, and the Astros snapped their four-game skid.

Yuli Gurriel's second-inning single drove in the only run for the Astros (87-57), who lowered their magic number for clinching the AL West title to five by blanking the second-place Angels (73-71).

Verlander (12-8) struck out nine and walked one in another overpowering performance for his new team. The star right-hander held the Angels without a hit after Brandon Phillips' leadoff double in the first, allowing only two more baserunners.

Verlander pitched six innings of one-run ball in Seattle during his Astros debut last week, and he looks exactly like the stopper Houston wanted for the pennant race.

                        PHILLIES 9, MARLINS 8, 15 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Nick Williams hit a walk-off, two-out double in the bottom of the 15th inning, scoring Aaron Altherr as Philadelphia rallied for the win.

Innings-wise, it was the longest game of the season for the Phillies and second-longest for the Marlins.

Williams had three hits and reached base five times in the marathon game. He has 47 RBIs since being called up the week before the All-Star break.

The Phillies celebrated with Williams, but thought they actually had a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Hyun-Soo Kim, but while the Phillies mobbed Kim at first base, ripping off his jersey and dousing him with water, Gatorade and sunflower seeds, the Marlins challenged the play at the plate.

After a lengthy review, it appeared catcher J.T. Realmuto's glove nicked the finger of a sliding Cesar Hernandez an instant before it touched the plate and the call on the field was overturned, and after the grounds crew had to clean up the mess around first base, Odubel Herrera struck out, sending the game to extra innings.

                        TWINS 16, PADRES 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jason Castro homered twice and Brian Dozier was a double from the cycle as Minnesota routed San Diego.

The Twins hit a season-high seven home runs, setting a Target Field record for most homers in a game, to back another strong start from Kyle Gibson. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Twins set a major league record by homering in each of the first seven innings with Jorge Polanco, Eddie Rosario, Eduardo Escobar and Kennys Vargas adding to the total.

Gibson (10-10) pitched six innings with four hits and six strikeouts. He has allowed two runs or fewer in five straight starts for Minnesota, which maintained its hold on the second wild card spot in the American League.

                        MARINERS 10, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ben Gamel and Kyle Seager both hit three-run homers to lead Seattle past Texas in a matchup of wild card hopefuls.

Texas (72-72) and Seattle (72-73) have split the first two games of their four-game series. The Rangers dropped three games behind Minnesota for the American League's second wild card, while the Mariners remained 3 1/2 back after the Twins also won.

Seager's homer in the third made it 7-1 and chased Miguel Gonzalez (7-11), who made his second start overall and first at home for the Rangers since they acquired him in an Aug. 31 trade with the Chicago White Sox. Gonzalez allowed seven runs and seven hits while recording only seven outs.

Marco Gonzales (1-1), traded from St. Louis to Seattle on July 21, got his first victory in six starts for the Mariners. The lefty struck out six while allowing three runs over five innings, his longest outing this season.

                        CARDINALS 13, REDS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul DeJong homered, Yadier Molina drove in three runs and streaking St. Louis outslugged Cincinnati.

The Cardinals have won four straight and six of their last seven to stay two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Molina's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the first gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. He drove in his 10th run over his past three games with a single in the sixth. Molina leads the team with 75 RBIs.

Matt Carpenter walked a career-best four times, doubled in a run and scored twice.

Lance Lynn (11-7) allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings.

Robert Stephenson (4-5) was pulled after three innings, the shortest career outing for the Reds rookie. He allowed six runs, four earned, and all three of his walks scored.

                        CUBS 8, METS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant hit a three-run homer, Jose Quintana pitched seven effective innings and Chicago got a sorely needed victory.

Quintana (10-11) also helped himself at the plate with a pair of sacrifices, including a perfectly placed safety squeeze that drove in Kyle Schwarber in the fourth. Quintana got another bunt down in the sixth, sending Javier Baez to third ahead of Ben Zobrist's RBI single.

Chicago had lost three in a row and six of eight, making for a crowded race at the top of the NL Central. St. Louis and Milwaukee also won Tuesday night, so the Cubs remained two games ahead of the Cardinals and 2 1/2 games better than the third-place Brewers.

                        ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez, heating up for the stretch run after a subpar season at the plate, homered twice and Colorado won its sixth in a row.

Gonzalez drove in all four Colorado runs in his first multihomer game since Aug. 16 last year and is batting .451 (14 for 31) in September.

Jon Gray (8-4) gave up two runs and scattered seven hits over seven solid innings, striking out 10 with no walks and a hit batter for the Rockies, who won their eighth straight road game to pull within three games of Arizona for the first NL wild card.

Gray matched the season high for strikeouts he set in a win at Arizona on June 30. Chris Rusin got two outs for his second save.

                        • MLB notebook: 2018 MLB season has early opening
                          September 12, 2017

Major League Baseball released its 2018 regular-season schedule on Tuesday with a wrinkle that hasn't been seen in 50 years.

All 30 teams will begin their respective season on March 29, marking the first time in a half-century that every club opens play on the same day. The 1968 campaign began with all 20 teams in action.

In addition, March 29 represents the earliest start to a major league season, excluding special international events. It also marks only the 12th time in league history -- and first since 2011 -- that the season will begin on a Thursday.

Opening Day features eight divisional matchups among the 15 games, in addition to an interleague contest between the Detroit Tigers and host Pittsburgh Pirates. The New York Yankees open at the American League East-rival Toronto Blue Jays for the first time since 2003 while the San Francisco Giants visit the Los Angeles Dodgers to highlight the divisional contests.

The Oakland Athletics will play a game against the Chicago White Sox on April 17 in which admission will be free. The date is the 50th anniversary of the club's first game in Oakland.

The final day of the 2018 regular season features 12 divisional games on Sept. 30, including the Yankees visiting the rival Boston Red Sox.

--The St. Louis Cardinals recalled outfielder Magneuris Sierra from Triple-A Memphis, the team announced.

Infielder Breyvic Valera was optioned to the Redbirds to make room for Sierra, who has played at the Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A and major league levels this season.

Sierra has batted a combined .270 in 101 games this season with Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield. The 21-year-old will be making his fourth recall this season to St. Louis, with which he is 19-for-52 in 13 games.

Valera went 1-for-5 in three games with the Cardinals since making his major league debut on Sept. 5. He hit a team-best .314 in 117 games with Memphis this season.

--The Texas Rangers will give their fans a look at the biggest piece acquired in the Yu Darvish trade with the promotion of outfielder Willie Calhoun.

The Rangers purchased Calhoun's contract from Triple-A Round Rock and activated 3B Adrian Beltre from the 10-day disabled list. To make room for Calhoun on the 40-man roster, the club also released right-hander Tyson Ross.

Calhoun, 22, is starting on Tuesday when the Rangers host the Seattle Mariners. Calhoun hit .300 and posted a .927 OPS with 31 home runs and 93 RBIs at Triple-A this season while playing for Oklahoma City (Dodgers) and Round Rock. He was part of the trade that sent Darvish to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

--The Baltimore Orioles activated outfielder Craig Gentry from the 10-day disabled list.

Gentry had been out since suffering a fractured finger on Sep. 1 and will join an Orioles team 3 1/2 games out of the second American League wild card spot heading into Tuesday night's games.

Gentry, 33, is batting .257 with 17 runs scored and five stolen bases in 74 games for Baltimore and serves as a solid defensive replacement in the outfield.

--The Cleveland Indians announced Tuesday that rookie center fielder Bradley Zimmer underwent surgery on the fractured fourth metacarpal of his left hand at the New York Hand and Wrist Center of Lenox Hill in New York.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham, who also examined Zimmer on Monday. The procedure required a plate and nine screws to be inserted in order to heal the fracture.

The Indians estimated that Zimmer will be able to resume baseball activities in six to eight weeks.

Zimmer was injured in the seventh inning of Sunday's 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on a head-first slide into first base. He hit a ground ball to Chris Davis and the Baltimore first baseman stepped on Zimmer's hand while applying the tag.

--San Diego Padres reliever Carter Capps will miss the remainder of the season after doctors discovered a blood clot when Capps went to the hospital late Monday night.

Before Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins, San Diego manager Andy Green said Capps saw doctors at a Minneapolis hospital after not feeling well Monday. After initially thinking it might be kidney stones, Capps found out it was a blood clot.

"A plan of action has not yet been determined for treatment," Green said.

Green also added that Capps will remain in Minnesota until he is cleared to fly.

                          • LEADING OFF: Indians go for 21st straight; Rays head home
                            September 13, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                            BLACKJACK

The amazing Indians go for their 21st straight victory when right-hander Mike Clevinger, who hasn't allowed a run in his past three outings, faces the Detroit Tigers in a 12:10 p.m. start. Cleveland can tie the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second-longest winning streak in major league history. The record is 26 in a row by the 1916 New York Giants. Closing in on their second consecutive AL Central crown, the Indians ran their incredible string to 20 games Tuesday night, beating Detroit 2-0 behind Corey Kluber (16-4) to match the American League mark held by the 2002 Oakland Athletics. Cleveland's streak began on Aug. 24 in Boston.

                            HOMEWARD BOUND

Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer (9-9) faces the Yankees in the matinee finale of a series relocated to the Mets' home ballpark in New York because of Hurricane Irma. Immediately following the game, the Rays fly back to Florida for firsthand looks at the storm damage. No word yet from Major League Baseball if Boston and Tampa Bay will play at Tropicana Field on Friday night as scheduled - the Rays expect to host the three-game set, but it could be reconfigured to give them an extra day off to handle personal matters.

                            POWER COMPANY

Minnesota looks to keep up its home run barrage when it hosts another interleague game against San Diego. The wild card-hopeful Twins hit a season-high seven home runs Tuesday night, setting a Target Field record for one game, during a 16-0 rout of the Padres. Jason Castro connected twice and the Twins set a big league mark by going deep in each of the first seven innings, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. On the mound for Minnesota will be Ervin Santana (15-7, 3.45 ERA), who pitched a shutout in San Diego on Aug. 2.

                            LESTER IS MORE

With the Cubs holding a slim lead over St. Louis and Milwaukee in the NL Central, veteran lefty Jon Lester (10-7, 4.35 ERA) looks for his third straight win when Chicago hosts Matt Harvey (5-4, 5.82 ERA) and the depleted Mets. The defending World Series champions had lost three in a row and six of eight before Tuesday night's 8-3 victory over New York.

                            HARD EIGHT

Rangers left-hander Martin Perez (12-10) tries to win his eighth straight start, which would match Kenny Rogers' team record set in 2005, when he faces Nelson Cruz and the Mariners. Perez is one of five big league pitchers this year to win at least seven consecutive starts - the others are Jacob deGrom and Clayton Kershaw with eight each; and James Paxton and Jason Vargas with seven each. Perez also joined Rogers and Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins as the only Rangers pitchers to twice win at least six starts in a row.

                            MINUS ONE

As the Red Sox try to hang onto first place in the AL East, they will be without speedy and versatile infielder Eduardo Nunez ''at least another week,'' manager John Farrell said. Nunez bruised his right knee on a headfirst slide Saturday and has experienced tightness and swelling. An MRI revealed a sprain, but it was ''not MCL or ACL-related,'' Farrell said.

                            ROLLIN' ROYAL

Brandon Moss has homered in three straight games as Kansas City gets set to face Lucas Giolito and the last-place White Sox. Giolito was ejected by plate umpire Gabe Morales last time out for arguing balls and strikes. Moss hit a grand slam in the first inning Tuesday against Chicago and has nine RBIs in his past three games.

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                              13) Baseball is cool because odd things sometimes happen; Monday night/Tuesday morning’s Dodger-Giant game was nothing if not odd.

There was a 42-minute rain delay at the start, then the game began, the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter struck out and then the rains came again, forcing a rain delay of 2:52.

The game resumed at about 1:55am here in the east; it ended around 5am. Thats 5 in the morning.

                              12) Pablo Sandoval was in a 1 for 47 slump when he singled to left in the 6th inning very late Monday night, or at roughly 4am Tuesday morning here in the east.

                              11) Indians were -$500 against Detroit Tuesday; I’ve never seen a baseball line that high.

                              10) Only nine out of over 2,000 people went 5-0 in the first week of the SuperContest at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. Denver was -3 in the contest, so anyone who had that game got a push.

                              9) Charger-Bronco game Monday night was only Week 1 NFL game where no points were scored in the last 2:00 of either half.

                              8) All four NFC North teams covered the spread in Week 1, only division that can say that.

                              7) Dolphins are practicing in Oxnard, CA at the Cowboys’ training camp facility this week, as they prepare to play the Chargers Sunday. Has to be a very strange week for them.

                              6) Yasiel Puig’s platoon splits this year:
vs lefty pitchers: .162, one HR, 8 RBI, 105 AB
vs righty pitchers: .286, 24 HR, 58 RBI, 343 AB

Very odd for a right-handed hitter like Puig.

                              5) Tennessee started their game Sunday by trying an onside kick, the first team to try that since the Vikings in 2009. Neither onside kick worked.

                              4) 2018 baseball schedules were released Tuesday. Opening Day is Thursday, March 29— for the first time since 1968, every team will play on Opening Day.

                              3) A’s play the White Sox at home on April 17; the game is free for all fans— it marks the 50th anniversary of the A’s first game in Oakland, after they moved from Kansas City.

                              2) Milwaukee Brewers will find out early next season if they’re going to contend; they play 14 games in April against the Cubs/Cardinals.

                              1) Seattle Mariners play 18 road games next April; their schedule is usually more cumbersome because of their being in the Pacific Northwest, but 18 road games in April is tough.
