              • MLB roundup: Indians win club-record 15th straight
                September 8, 2017

CHICAGO -- Corey Kluber struck out 13, and Erik Gonzalez hit two of Cleveland's five homers as the Cleveland Indians won a franchise-record 15th straight game, beating the Chicago White Sox 11-2 on Thursday night.

Edwin Encarnacion, Francisco Lindor and Greg Allen also went deep for Cleveland. Kluber (15-4), who struck out at least 10 for the 14th time this season, allowed three hits and two runs while walking one over seven innings.

Gonzalez, who homered in the third and ninth innings, drove in four runs. Allen hit his first career home run as part of a three-run seventh inning. Lindor went 3-for-6 with three runs and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

Chicago's Mike Pelfrey (3-11), who started after Carlos Rodon was forced to miss his scheduled start with shoulder stiffness, gave up seven runs and eight hits over four innings. Pelfrey struck out four and walked three.

                Twins 4, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jorge Polanco's two-run, two-out single in a three-run ninth inning lifted Minnesota over Kansas City.

The loss dropped the Royals 3 1/2 games behind the Twins in the race for the second American League wild card. Minnesota was limited to one run and six hits for the first eight innings before rallying in the ninth off Kelvin Herrera (3-3).

Max Kepler led off the inning with a single. With one out, Jason Castro hit a fly ball down the left-field line that shortstop Alcides Escobar nearly caught, but it fell for a single. After Robbie Grossman walked, Brian Dozier's sacrifice fly tied it before Polanco's hit.

                Cubs 8, Pirates 2

PITTSBURGH -- Albert Almora Jr. hit a two-run homer, and Ian Happ had three hits as Chicago walloped Pittsburgh.

The Cubs' Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and two walks. Chicago's Jon Lester (10-7), in his second start since coming off the disabled list, gave up one run and five hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out five.

The Pirates' Jameson Taillon (7-6) gave up six runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Taillon hasn't won since Aug. 11 but was coming off a no-decision against Cincinnati in which he pitched six scoreless innings.

                Nationals 4, Phillies 3

WASHINGTON -- Trea Turner keyed a sixth-inning rally with a two-run single, and Tanner Roark won for the third time in four starts as Washington stormed back to beat Philadelphia.

Matt Wieters hit an RBI double to chase Phillies starter Aaron Nola in the sixth and cut the Nationals' deficit to 3-2. Three batters later, Turner hit a two-run single up the middle off reliever Adam Morgan (3-2) with the bases loaded to give Washington the lead.

Roark (12-9) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings, with six strikeouts and one walk. Brandon Kintzler and Ryan Madson each pitched a scoreless inning before Sean Doolittle worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save with the Nationals.

                Yankees 9, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Aaron Judge and Chase Headley each hit two-run homers as New York belted four against Baltimore.

Starlin Castro and Todd Frazier added solo homers as the Yankees took two of three in this series. It was the first time they won a set at Camden Yards since 2014 -- a span of 11 series.

Sonny Gray (3-4 with New York, 9-9 overall) turned in his second solid effort in three starts. He gave up one unearned run and scattered five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                Braves 6, Marlins 5

ATLANTA -- Kurt Suzuki's two-out single in the ninth capped a two-run rally and helped Atlanta defeat Miami.

The Braves began the comeback when pinch-hitter Matt Adams doubled off closer Brad Ziegler (1-4). Pinch-runner Nick Markakis scored the tying run when Ozzie Albies slapped a one-out double to right field.

After intentionally walking Freddie Freeman and retiring Lane Adams on a fielder's choice, Suzuki singled to left to score Freeman and give the Braves their seventh walk-off victory of the season.

                Padres 3, Cardinals 0

SAN DIEGO -- Wil Myers hit a two-run homer, and Clayton Richard and three relievers combined to throw an 11-hit shutout as San Diego salvaged the finale of the four-game series.

The Padres had been protecting a one-run lead since the first inning when Myers connected off the Cardinals' Seung Hwan Oh with two outs in the seventh inning. Carlos Asuaje opened the seventh with a single off reliever Zach Duke. Oh came on to retire the next two hitters. Myers then drove a 2-1 pitch into the left-field seats.

Richard (7-13) held St. Louis scoreless on five hits and a walk through six innings. Brad Hand struck out Dexter Fowler with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to record his 16th save.

                Mets 7, Reds 2

NEW YORK -- Brandon Nimmo hit two home runs in a game for the first time as a major-leaguer to lead New York over Cincinnati.

Nimmo, batting cleanup for the second time in 38 big league starts, finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Nimmo entered Thursday with one home run and five extra-base hits in 95 at-bats this season.

Matt Harvey (5-4) earned his first win since May 28 after allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. It was the second start since coming off the disabled list for Harvey, who missed more than two months with a right shoulder injury.

                • MLB notebook: Former Yankees GM Michael dies
                  September 7, 2017

Gene "Stick" Michael, the New York Yankees executive who was the architect of the team's late-1990s dynasty, has died of a heart attack. He was 79.

Michael served as Yankees manager in 1981-82 and as their general manager from 1991-95. During his time as general manager, Michael built the team's farm system and drafted superstar shortstop Derek Jeter to go along with fellow Core Four representatives Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada.

Nickname "Stick" for his tall, slender build, Michael signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates and played for the club in 1966. He then competed with the Dodgers the following season before the Yankees purchased his contract. Michael played seven years for New York before finishing his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1975.

--Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee and is expected to play in Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners.

Pujols traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday to undergo an MRI exam after pain in the knee persisted. He injured the knee while sliding into second base against the Texas Rangers on Friday.

A significant injury was ruled out during Thursday's examination.

The knee injury comes at a time in which Pujols has been red-hot during a six-game hitting streak. He is 13-for-24 with two homers and 14 RBIs during the stretch. Pujols is batting .244 with 21 homers and 93 RBIs this season.

--Outfielder Victor Robles, 20, one of the top prospects in the minor leagues, was called by the Washington Nationals after he began this season at high Single-A Potomac of the Carolina League.

Robles was the top prospect in the Washington system prior to this season, according to Baseball America. He hit a combined .300 with 37 doubles, 10 homers and 27 steals between Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg of the Eastern League in 2017.

Washington manager Dusty Baker said the surprise promotion of Robles was due in part to the status of injured outfielder Brian Goodwin (left groin strain), who had a recent setback and might not be ready for the first round of postseason play. Goodwin, who went on the disabled list August 16, is hitting .251 with 13 homers in 74 games while playing mostly left field.

--The Chicago White Sox placed right-hander Jake Petricka on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow strain and sent outfielder Willy Garcia to Class-A Kannapolis on a rehabilitation assignment.

Petricka is making his second trip to the disabled list this season, as the 29-year-old was sidelined from June 26-July 27 with a right lat strain. He owns a 1-1 mark with a 7.01 ERA in 27 appearances this season.

Garcia has been on the disabled list since Friday after sustaining a concussion following a collision with Yoan Moncada in the previous day's game versus Toronto. The 25-year-old Garcia is batting .258 with two homers, 11 RBIs and 13 runs scored in 40 games with the White Sox.

                  • LEADING OFF: Dbacks streaking into weekend, Scherzer returns
                    September 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the major Friday:

                    SWEET 16?

Mike Clevinger and the Indians try to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 16 games when they begin a series against Baltimore. Clevinger (8-5, 3.50 ERA) has delivered a pair of scoreless outings during Cleveland's streak and has perhaps found his footing after an inconsistent start to his big league career. Orioles lefty Wade Miley (8-11, 4.91) will try to slow a lineup that slugged five homers Thursday night against the White Sox.

                    STREAKING SNAKES, TOO

The Diamondbacks can stretch their club-record winning streak to 14 games in the opener of a set against the Padres. The run includes six victories over the NL West-leading Dodgers, and Arizona even led for 97 consecutive innings - the second longest span in the majors since 1900 - before the Dodgers scored first on Wednesday night. Patrick Corbin (13-11, 3.83) has a pair of victories during this streak, and he'll seek another against San Diego's Jordan Lyles (0-2, 6.71).

                    TO THE MAX

Max Scherzer hasn't lost a start since June 21, and he'll go for another victory when the Nationals host the Phillies. Scherzer (13-5, 2.19) is 5-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his past 11 starts, including five effective innings versus Milwaukee last time out before exiting with a bruised calf after being struck by a line drive.

                    FEELING FINE?

Chris Archer (9-8, 3.76) is set to return after throwing just eight pitches in his previous outing before exiting with forearm tightness. The Rays right-hander gets a tough draw in the Red Sox and left-hander Drew Pomeranz (14-5, 3.36), who lost last time out against the Yankees to end a 14-start unbeaten stretch.

                    COME ON IN

The Braves are offering free tickets to fans from Florida, Georgia and South Carolina displaced by Hurricane Irma. During a four-game series against the Marlins which began Thursday night, the Braves will give a complimentary ticket to anyone showing a valid Florida ID. The offer also is open to residents of Georgia and South Carolina counties under mandatory evacuation orders. Braves president of business Derek Schiller says he hopes the offer ''can help take their mind off the storm for a few hours.''

                      • Friday’s six-pack

                        — Chiefs 42, Patriots 27— Alex Smith played really well, going 28-35 for 365 yards, four TD’s.

                        — Kareem Hunt is first player since Billy Sims in 1980 to gain 180+ yards from scrimmage and score 3+ TD’s in his NFL debut.

                        — Chiefs had the ball up 21-17 with 7:10 to go in 3rd quarter; KC was still +$155 on the live line.

                        — Indians 11, White Sox 2— Cleveland has now won 15 games in a row, outscoring opponents 109-28.

                        — Rockies 9, Dodgers 1— Clayton Kershaw lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing four runs.

                        — Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Florida all cancelled their football games this weekend because of Hurricane Irma.

                        ***********************************

Friday’s List of 13: NFL knowledge with the season here…….

                        13) Dallas Cowboys haven’t played in a Super Bowl since the 1995 season; Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger both won a Super Bowl in their second season- Dallas is hoping Dak Prescott gets a championship in his second season.

                        12) Roethlisberger has played all 16 games in only three of his 13 NFL seasons; he missed one game in four other seasons.

                        11) Teams who have rebuilt/are rebuilding their offensive lines:
                        — Vikings have four new starters on the offensive line.
                        — Broncos, Ravens, Chargers, Lions, Rams all have three new starters.

                        10) Indianapolis Colts have eight new starters on defense; their QB and center are both out to start this season.

                        9) Lot of people are touting the Buccaneers to be a playoff team this year; after watching Hard Knocks this summer, I wasn’t overly impressed by anything about them, other than coach Dirk Koetter is a very calm person. Even when he curses someone out, it is done quietly.

Koetter got the head coaching job because of how he’s helped Jameis Winston develop as a QB; would’ve liked to have seen some of that behind-the-scenes teaching on Hard Knocks.

                        8) Carolina Panthers lost six games by 3 or less points last year; teams like that often make a quantum leap forward if they get some breaks the next season, but Carolina was also 15-1 the year before, so maybe last year was the correction.

In any event. Cam Newton’s shoulder is the Panthers’ most important variable.

                        7) Do you think Bill Belichick will retire when Tom Brady does?

                        6) Oakland Raiders have five new starters on defense; Derek Carr has been terrific at QB as a Raider, but he is 1-5 against the Chiefs.

                        5) Minnesota QB Sam Bradford’s passes traveled an average of 6.24 yards in the air LY, the shortest average pass of any starting QB, which helps explain why he completed 70% of them.

Bradford’s best WR is Michael Floyd, who is suspended for the first four games this year.

                        4) Baltimore Ravens were 8-8 LY, losing three games they led with 2:30 to play; since June 1, Ravens have lost four starters for the season with injuries. Joe Flacco didn’t take a snap in the preseason games and they have three new starters on the OL. I’m a skeptic.

                        3) Arizona Cardinals have only five outdoor games this season; three of their road games are in domes. Cardinals also have six new starters on defense this season.

                        2) New Orleans Saints have been 7-9 the last three seasons; they’ve got six new starters on defense this year. Will they run the ball more this season to protect that defense, and aging QB Drew Brees? They’ve added Adrian Peterson, so it is a popular theory.

                        1) Last two years, Chargers are 7-17 in games decided by 8 or less points; they’ve got 10 starters back on defense and a rookie coach who hired two former head coaches as coordinators, which seems like a smart move.
