  • LEADING OFF: New jerseys across majors, Jones back in Boston
    August 24, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

    BRIGHT IDEA

Uniforms, bats and spikes will have a different look across the big leagues this weekend. Major League Baseball has relaxed the rules for a few days, so players can put nicknames on their jerseys. It'll be ''Bringer of Rain'' for Toronto slugger Josh Donaldson, ''Kiiiiid'' for Angels star Mike Trout and ''Nerd Power'' for Milwaukee infielder Eric Sogard. MLB wants players to show their personalities, so fans will also see bright colors for bats, cleats and catcher's masks. At Yankee Stadium, this marks quite a break from tradition - the pinstriped uniforms never include any names on the back. Now, it will be ''All Rise'' for rookie Aaron Judge, and a lot more when New York hosts Seattle.

    BACK IN BOSTON

Orioles star Adam Jones plays for the first time at Fenway Park since a tense series in early May during which he was the target of racial taunts by fans. The Red Sox organization apologized to Jones, and the center fielder was later given a standing ovation by the Boston crowd. Earlier this week, Commissioner Rob Manfred said Major League Baseball planned to issue a policy for fan behavior at all stadiums next season.

    ROOKIE RIPS

Phillies newcomer Rhys Hoskins has become just the third player in major league history to hit eight home runs in his first 15 games. The 24-year-old joined Carlos Delgado and Trevor Story to accomplish the feat. Next up for Hoskins will be Jose Quintana and the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.

    FEELING BETTER?

The Mets will place All-Star outfielder Michael Conforto on the disabled list and are considering surgery after he dislocated and suffered a tear in his left shoulder while swinging at a pitch. Asked if Conforto's season was over, manager Terry Collins said: ''I can't go out there and predict that,'' but that was before an MRI revealed a tear in the posterior capsule of the shoulder. Conforto is hitting .279 with 27 home runs and 68 RBIs as New York gets set for a series at Washington.

    GETTING CLOSER

Indians first baseman Carlos Santana has missed three straight starts because of tightness in his back. Manager Terry Francona hopes Santana can play when the AL Central leaders host Kansas City. Santana is hitting .250 with 18 home runs and 64 RBIs.

    • Friday’s six-pack

      — Chargers fired Bobby Wick this week, their equipment man for the last 39 years. Classy.

      — Chris Sale has a 4.78 ERA in 118.2 IP vs Cleveland; against everyone else, his career ERA is 2.81, in 1,169.2 IP. Thanks to Christopher Kamka for that stat.

      — Boston closer Craig Kimbrel has faced 197 batters this year; he struck out 102 of them.

      — Boston Celtics are already sold out of season tickets for the 2017-18 season.

      — Dodgers won their 90th game before any other team got their 80th win.

      — Dodger pitcher Kenta Meada’s season stats this year:
      Wins: 11
      Saves: 1
      WHIP: 1.11
      IP: 111.1
      Strikeouts: 111

      **************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

      13) 6th/7th innings of New York-Detroit game Thursday took around two hours to play, thanks to a brawl, eight ejections, two hit batters and six runs scored.

Detroit’s Michael Fulmer hit Gary Sanchez in the 5th inning; when NY reliever Tommy Kanhle threw behind Miguel Cabrera, benches emptied, Kanhle and Joe Girardi got tossed. Before play could resume, Cabrera and backup catchup Austin Romine started jawing and a fight broke out, an actual fight, not a baseball shoving match.

Not the best job of controlling things by the umpires; New York lost its DH when Sanchez had to come in and catch, but they rallied to tie the game in the top of the 7th before the Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the 7th.

New York used Aroldis Chapman in the 6th inning, after Kanhle got tossed.

      12) Last summer on Hard Knocks, Rams’ rookie QB Jared Goff was hardly on the show, which didn’t help the program any— they focused mostly on guys on who got cut.

This year, Bucs’ QB Jameis Winston IS THE SHOW— he is all over it and that makes the program better. Haven’t seen much of coach Dirk Koetter yet, except when Winston threw an ill-advised pass in the red zone against Jacksonville and Koetter went bullshit on him for it.

      11) Pittsburgh beat the Dodgers Wednesday despite getting only one hit; last time the Pirates won a game when they had one hit was May 2, 1943- Vince DiMaggio got the only Pittsburgh hit.

      10) Josh Harrison’s walk-off homer to end that game was the first walk-off homer in MLB history that also ended a no-hitter. That same night, Harrison’s cousin JaVon Shelby caught a no-hitter in the Class A Midwest League.

Hill is the 5th major leaguer and first since 1995, to lose a no-hitter in extra innings.

      9) On May 26, 1959, a Pirates pitcher named Harvey Haddix threw 12 perfect innings in a game at Milwaukee, but lost the game and no-hitter 1-0 on an unearned run in the 13th inning. It is the greatest losing performance in baseball history.

The next year, Haddix was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, throwing a scoreless 9th inning as the Pirates upset New York to win a world championship.

      8) Some people are going to protest until Colin Kaepernick is on an NFL team; then once he is on a team, other people will protest until he is out of the league again.

What a world this has become.

      7) Marvin Bagley III is committed to play basketball at Duke this fall, but will be play? Will the NCAA clear him on time? Bagley went to three different high schools in two states, he took online classes, so it is going to take some time, and the NCAA can be slow in these cases.

Expecting Bagley to be dominant in the ACC might be a bit much; don’t forget, he is supposed to be a high school senior- when he plays against older people, there will sometimes be a big age/maturity gap, not a talent gap. Plus you wonder if he isn’t already looking ahead to the NBA, which has often been an issue with probable 1-and-done guys.

      6) Cole Hamels is 9-1, 3.42 in 16 starts this year, but in the six games where Hamels didn’t get a decision, the Rangers are 1-5, and that could bite Texas coming down the stretch. In races like this, with so many teams bunched together, you have to win when your ace is pitching.

      5) I can’t even imagine working in a sportsbook and having someone hand me $100,000 to bet on a fight. Someone risked $100,000 to win $20,000 on Floyd Mayweather Saturday night. I’m trying to think of the most money I’ve ever held at one time…….$100K is a lot of cabbage.

      4) Mets’ OF Michael Conforto dislocated his left (throwing) shoulder swinging at a pitch Thursday; never saw that happen before. Conforto had been playing really well for the Mets.

      3) There was an old movie on TV the other night; Taking Care of Business, with Jim Belushi and Charles Grodin; Belushi is an escaped convict who escapes jail to go watch the Cubs play in the World Series. Filmed in 1990, one of the TV announcers was Joe Torre— this was just before he took over managing the Cardinals. His record at that point wasn’t Hall of Fame-worthy.

Cubs beat the Angels in the fictitious movie, by the way, even though Bert Blyleven was in the movie, pitching for the Angels.

      2) In the movie Friday Night Lights, where Billy Bob Thornton coaches Permian HS to the finals of the Texas state football tournament, his team loses to Carter HS of Dallas in the state title game.

In real life, three of those Carter HS players made the NFL, including Jesse Armstead. Hall of Famer LaDanian Tomlinson calls that Carter team “the greatest high school football team ever assembled.”

      1) This November will be the last-ever Great Alaskan Shootout; once one of the best preseason college hoop tournaments, it suffered because ESPN started running tournaments in places with way better weather than Alaska. One year, Duke-Cincinnati was the final in Alaska, back when Bob Huggins was coaching Cincinnati.

                  August 25, 2017

                  Hottest team: Dodgers (9-2 last 11, 55-11 last 66)

It's absolutely jaw-dropping to see the numbers above. So many units. The 90 wins you can see in the standings today -- Aug. 25 -- have only been available for viewing this early in 1998 (Yankees) and 2001 (Mariners). Seattle won 116 games. It's unlikely that the Dodgers get there due to all the attrition they're currently facing, particularly with their pitching, but that doesn't mean they're not going to try. It's ridiculous that one of the only two losses they've suffered since Aug. 12 came after Rich Hill completed nine no-hit innings on Wednesday, so L.A. is indeed going to take the field for its last three home dates until Sept. 4 as the best team in baseball despite the absence of Clayton Kershaw, Yu Darvish and Cody Bellinger, three of the game's top talents.

The -185 range they opened at may appear inflated given the travel from Pittsburgh and the fact Kenta Maeda (11-5, 3.88 ERA) suffered their last loss and takes the mound tonight, but have some respect when you consider fading them. Curtis Granderson and Adrian Gonzalez homered to aid yesterday's bounce-back win, so maybe reinforcements have arrived. Milwaukee +167, huh? The Brewers are worth a look, as the early public has already committed to. Chase Anderson (7-2, 2.83) looked sharp in his return from the DL. Travis Shaw is questionable due to a foot injury.

Coldest team: Tigers (4-14 last 18)
Although it pulled out a 10-6 win in Thursday's brawl-marred series finale against the Yankees, Detroit hasn't demonstrated much passion all season. Although the Tigers responded to avoid being swept after being outscored 23-6 in the first two games, they were bickering among themselves in the dugout after teammates called out Victor Martinez for fraternizing with Gary Sanchez during one of the skirmishes. That's all family business, sure, but they look like one unhappy family.

Beyond whatever suspensions MLB hands down in the coming days, this team is stuck together on a six-game road trip that begins in Chicago against a young White Sox team resurgent enough to win three of five from the Twins. The youth movement is invested in playing spoiler, especially at home, where they're 7-4 at home this month. Justin Verlander (9-8, 3.96), who got into it with Martinez in a widely viewed argument, has a chance to set the tone on the trip and is heavily favored (-160) over Sox veteran Miguel Gonzalez (7-10, 4.44). He should be fired up and has pitched the Tigers to wins in four of his last five starts, giving up just three runs over 29 innings in the victories.

Hottest pitcher: Parker Bridwell, Angels (7-1, 2.92 ERA)

The rookie won his first two decisions, then was rocked in a 10-0 home loss to the Mariners on June 30. The Halos have won all eight of his starts since, six of them coming by a single run. Bridwell has walked more than single batter only once in that span, which is the same game (Aug. 3 vs. Phillies) where he's surrendered more than two earned runs. He faced Houston, which opened as a slight favorite (-114), in his major league debut last season.

Coldest pitcher: Jake Odorizzi, Rays (6-7, 4.74 ERA)
He got rocked in his last start, giving up seven runs and eight hits at home against the Mariners. Worst yet, he walked a season-high five batters and has pitched in just three Tampa Bay victories over his last 14 outings. Given their postseason aspirations, the Rays badly hope he snaps out of it in the series opener of the weekend's only interleague series. St. Louis (-158) is favored with Michael Wacha (9-6, 4.08) on the mound.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (5-1 last six, 14-5 last 19)

Colorado had a run in which the low side went 10-1-1 from June 28 to July 9, and it was part of what brought them back down to earth. With the Rockies' wild card grip growing increasingly tenuous, they better figure things out offensively before what their season's dreams fade. They had lost four straight before rallying for a 3-2 win in Kansas City to avoid being swept on Thursday afternoon and have managed over four runs in a single game only twice in the last 16 games. The Rockies run into Braves ace Julio Teheran, who despite a down year (7-11, 5.02), blanked them over seven innings just 11 days ago. Chad Bettis (0-0, 1.93) has been great since his return from battling cancer. The Atlanta-Colorado total is at 9.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (8-3 last 11)

Powered by Rhys Hopkins tying a big league record shared by Toronto's Carlos Delgado and Colorado's Trevor Story with eight homers in his first 15 career games, the Phillies have a pulse. Although they lost three of four to the Marlins, Philadelphia is another team exhibiting a pulse through an infusion of youth as we speed towards September. The rookie and Tommy Joseph batting in the No. 5 spot behind him each hit three and has joined Hopkins on a tear, up to 19 homers and providing insurance in the lineup. The Phillies hit 11 of the 21 homers in the home series against Giancarlo Stanton's Marlins and now run into a Cubs offense that had been hot until last night's upset loss to the Reds. The over is 6-2 over Chicago's last eight, so both Jerad Eickhoff (3-7, 4.46) and Jose Quintana (8-10, 4.27) will have to be on their game. The Phils-Cubs total has been set at 9 too.

Matchup to watch: Royals at Indians (-130, 9.5)

The two preseason AL Central favorites enter this series separated by six games after the Tribe hammered Chris Sale's Red Sox again following Kansas City's late-inning loss. If the Royals can make Progressive Field a friendly venue over the next few weeks, they'll have a shot at winning the division despite the current standings.

All seven of the remaining meetings in this series will be played in Cleveland. The Royals opened their final homestand against the Tribe by being outscored 15-1 over the first two games last weekend before salvaging Sunday's contest 7-4.

Thus far, these teams have split 12 matchups, but this series opener will have a new variable, Indians lefty Ryan Merritt. Known for his memorable scoreless turn in last year's ALCS Game 5 despite just one regular season start, Merritt hasn't been able to crack the rotation and will be making just his fourth appearance this season. Only a handful of Royals have ever faced him in the bigs, and only Eric Hosmer has a hit against him.

After Hosmer's heroic 3-run homer helped salvage a loss to the Rockies and hinted of a potential magical run, momentum came to a halt when Colorado's Pat Valaika smacked a late go-ahead 2-run homer off reliever Mike Minor and the offense failed to rally.

Ace Jason Vargas (14-7, 3.59) will look to get them back on track while setting a new career-high for wins after failing to last five innings against the Tribe in a 5-0 loss on Aug. 19. Vargas is 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA against Cleveland this season over four starts and surrendered just two runs over his first 20.2 innings against them before last weekend's letdown.

                  Betcha didn’t know:
Bartolo Colon (5-10, 6.66) has a diabolical ERA. Now you do. He's also given up six homers over his last two starts but is 3-1 with 3.67 ERA thus far in August and won at Toronto's Rogers Centre on May 15 in a 10-6 win as a member of the Braves. The 44-year-old will be opposed by J.A. Happ (6-9, 3.90) as he attempts to keep the Twins ahead in the race for the AL wild card, which now features five teams separated by a single game.

Biggest public favorite: Diamondbacks (-235) vs. Giants

Biggest public underdog: Brewers (+167) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Red Sox (-150 to -160) vs. Orioles

                  • Basebrawl! 8 tossed in testy game, Tigers top Yankees 10-6
                    August 25, 2017

DETROIT (AP) Once slugger Miguel Cabrera wrestled Yankees catcher Austin Romine to the ground at home plate, an afternoon game at Comerica Park collapsed into total chaos.

All the testiness that had been building between the Detroit Tigers and New York finally boiled over. The toll of Thursday's fury - three bench-clearing altercations, eight ejections, one beaning and a lot of angry words.

''I'm sure there are going to be suspensions on both sides,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after a 10-6 loss.

The winning and losing pitchers - Detroit's Alex Wilson (2-4) and New York's Dellin Betances (3-5) - were among those tossed. So were Girardi and Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.

At one point, the ill will carried over to the Detroit dugout, where star pitcher Justin Verlander and teammate Victor Martinez appeared to get into some sort of dispute.

''I was actually on the field, so I haven't seen it and haven't talked to them about it,'' Ausmus said. ''I'm aware of it, but I couldn't tell you what it was about.''

Perhaps the only positive thing: This was the final time the Yankees and Tigers were scheduled to play this season.

James McCann and Justin Upton homered for Detroit, and Gary Sanchez went deep for the Yankees, but that all became secondary on a day when the umpires had their hands full trying to maintain order. Major League Baseball now figures to be busy, too, sorting out likely penalties that could especially hurt the playoff-contending Yankees.

Girardi contended an early warning would've cut off the trouble before it escalated. He blamed the umps for letting things go wild, saying, ''Just a very poor job on their part.''

Much later, Betances was ejected after he hit McCann in the helmet. Betances seemed to be indicating he had thrown a breaking ball instead of a fastball, and wound up shouting at the Tigers and the umps.

''I threw him out and that was to keep control of the game,'' umpire crew chief Dana DeMuth said. ''And the reason why it took a minute or so, was because I wanted to get the players apart. Once I got Detroit going to their dugout and New York going to their dugout, then I informed him that he was ran.''

''It wasn't necessarily of him intentionally beaning the batter, but to keep control of the situation, I deemed it necessary that he went,'' he said.

Although Cabrera vs. Romine was the peak of the hostilities, McCann's beaning was the most frightening.

''You don't want to see people hit in the head. You don't want to see fighting on the field,'' Cabrera said. ''But people have to understand we're human.''

The problems between these teams began well before Tommy Kahnle threw behind Cabrera in the sixth inning. Last month, they had a game at Yankee Stadium in which four batters were hit.

This time, Michael Fulmer hit Sanchez with a pitch in the fifth, an inning after Sanchez had homered for the fourth time in this three-game series.

''If you can't see that Fulmer clearly hit Sanchez on purpose, there's something wrong,'' Girardi said.

Fulmer looked like he might be hurt after throwing that pitch, and he was checked by the trainer before staying in the game. He said he had no intention of hitting Sanchez.

''I respect Gary Sanchez, I really do,'' said Fulmer, who beat out Sanchez for last year's American League Rookie of the Year award. ''I would never throw at anybody that hit a homer off of me, just because they hit a home run.''

Kahnle was ejected after his pitch behind Cabrera, and Girardi was tossed after he came out to argue.

''When they throw at me, it was OK. ... I was cool with that,'' Cabrera said. ''When they started arguing with the umpire, I said to Romine, `Calm down.'''

The game was finally about to resume when Cabrera stepped toward Romine, and the New York catcher took off his mask. Cabrera gave him a two-handed push to the chest.

''He said, `You have a problem with me?' And I said, `This isn't about you,''' said Romine, whose brother Andrew plays for the Tigers. ''And then he pushed me. It felt like he wanted a confrontation there and I just tried to defend myself the best I could.''

Cabrera appeared to take a couple of swings at Romine, and the two ended up on the ground as players from both teams spilled onto the field. Sanchez later appeared to take a swing at someone at the bottom of the pile.

Cabrera and Romine were ejected, and Romine was so incensed by his dismissal that he threw his mask when he entered the dugout.

An inning later, Betances hit McCann in the helmet with a pitch, causing benches to empty again, and Betances and bench coach Rob Thompson were tossed. Betances said he didn't hit McCann on purpose, and McCann seemed to agree afterward.

''I don't think it was intentional,'' McCann said. ''At that point in the game, Miggy was thrown at, Sanchez had been hit, and at least in my mind, the retaliation was over. I don't think that he was trying to hit me on purpose.''

Wilson and Ausmus were ejected in the eighth after Wilson hit Todd Frazier around the thigh with a pitch. The benches cleared for a third time.

''With me hitting a guy in the leg, it's what I have to do and that's what I did,'' Wilson said. ''Fortunately for me I know where my pitches are going, and I hit a guy in the leg today to take care of my teammates and protect them.''

                    BIG HIT

Jose Iglesias gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead when he hit a three-run double in the seventh off David Robertson, who had relieved Betances. Iglesias had three hits for the Tigers, and Brett Gardner had four for the Yankees.

Shane Greene got five outs for his fourth save.

''We did a nice job of fighting back, excuse the expression,'' Ausmus said. ''It was a good win and we needed the win.''

                    TRAINER'S ROOM

Tigers: After hitting Sanchez and being checked by the trainer, Fulmer pitched into the seventh inning. ... McCann also stayed in the game after being hit in the head, and he homered the following inning.

                    UP NEXT

Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (10-5) starts at home Friday night against Seattle LHP Ariel Miranda (8-6).

Tigers: Verlander (9-8) takes the mound in Chicago against RHP Miguel Gonzalez (7-10) of the White Sox.

                      • MLB roundup: Mancini, Orioles throttle Red Sox
                        August 25, 2017

BOSTON -- Trey Mancini drove in four runs, and the Baltimore Orioles collected 20 hits and took advantage of five Boston errors in a 16-3 rout of the Red Sox on Friday night.

The Orioles, reaching a season high in runs and matching their high in hits, won for the third time in four games as they strive to stay alive in the crowded American League wild card chase. They're still two games under .500 (63-65) but came in just three games out of a spot -- albeit with six teams ahead of them.

The Red Sox, hammered for 13 runs and 17 hits in a loss at Cleveland Thursday night, were guilty of a season-high in errors as Rick Porcello's four-game winning streak came crashing to an end.

Porcello, losing for the third time to the Orioles this season, fell to 8-15 by allowing a career-worst 11 runs in 4 2/3 innings. Only four of the runs were earned with his own throwing error staring the carnage.

                        Marlins 8, Padres 6

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton homered twice as Miami toppled San Diego.

Stanton hit his 48th and 49th home runs and drove in five runs for the Marlins, who have won five of their last six. He has hit 16 home runs in August and his multi-homer performance was his ninth of the season. Stanton also tied a career high of 105 RBIs set in 2014.

Marcell Ozuna's three-run home run off Padres reliever Kirby Yates (3-5) in the seventh erased a 6-5 deficit. Ozuna reached 30 home runs for the first time in his career. He also accomplished 100 RBIs for the first time as his blast gave him a career-best 101.

                        Phillies 7, Cubs 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Rhys Hoskins homered again as the Phillies jumped on Chicago early and cruised to a win.

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff (4-7) earned the win. He went five innings while allowing one run and five hits. Eickhoff struck out eight and walked three.

Cubs starter Jose Quintana (4-3) didn't have his best day. The lefty surrendered six runs in five innings on nine hits. He walked four while striking out seven.

                        Mariners 2, Yankees 1 (11)

NEW YORK -- Yonder Alonso homered with two outs off Aroldis Chapman in the top of the 11th inning, lifting Seattle to a victory over New York.

Alonso entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth and reached on a walk against Dellin Betances. Two innings later, he produced his biggest hit since joining the Mariners on Aug. 6 when he lifted a 2-1, 100 mph fastball well over the center field fence.

It was Alonso's second homer with Seattle and 24th overall. It also was the third career homer to a left-handed hitter by Chapman (4-3), who was removed from his closer's role last week after allowing Boston rookie Rafael Devers to homer on his 103 mph fastball in the 10th inning on Aug. 13.

                        Twins 6, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO --Bartolo Colon pitched into the seventh inning and Jorge Polanco hit a two-run double as Minnesota defeated Toronto.

Colon (6-10) allowed one run on nine hits with one walk in 6 2/3 innings and did not record a strikeout as the Twins maintained the second wild-card position in the American League.

Polanco and Byron Buxton each had three hits and two RBIs for Minnesota.

                        Mets 4, Nationals 2

WASHINGTON -- Jacob deGrom gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings and Juan Lagares had two hits and drove in a run as New York overcame another injury to beat Washington.

Mets starter deGrom (14-7) allowed five hits while striking out 10 and walking just one for the Mets, who saw Yoenis Cespedes exit the contest with an injury while running the bases.

The Nationals broke up the shutout bid as Adrian Sanchez had an RBI single in the eighth to make it 3-1. Andrew Stevenson doubled with two outs and then scored on the hit by Sanchez, which sent deGrom to showers. Former Washington lefty Jerry Blevins then fanned Daniel Murphy to end the threat.

                        Braves 5, Rockies 2

ATLANTA -- Julio Teheran, who came in with 18 straight scoreless innings against Colorado, allowed just five Rockies to reach base over 7 1/3 innings in a victory.

Matt Kemp and Kurt Suzuki each belted homers and Teheran (8-11) allowed five hits and two runs while striking out four and walking none as he improved to 5-1 in his career against Colorado.

Teheran won his first start at the Braves' new ballpark, beating San Diego on April 14, but then went winless in his next 12 Atlanta starts while posting a 7.36 ERA and setting a Braves record for consecutive home losses.

                        Indians 4, Royals 0

CLEVELAND -- Ryan Merritt pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Francisco Lindor had two hits, including a two-run home run, as Cleveland blanked Kansas City.

Four Indians pitchers combined for Cleveland's American League-leading 13th shutout of the year.

Merritt (1-0) was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to make a spot start, and he made the most of it. The 25-year-old left-hander struck out three, walked one and scattered seven hits.

                        Reds 9, Pirates 5

CINCINNATI -- Adam Duvall and Scott Schebler homered, and Robert Stephenson had a career-high 11 strikeouts, lifting Cincinnati to a victory over Pittsburgh in the opener of a three-game series.

Stephenson (2-4) wore "Bob" on the back of his jersey for MLB Player's Weekend and gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. His 11 strikeouts were the second-most for a Reds pitcher this season.

Schebler went 3-for-3 with a triple, homer and three RBIs for Cincinnati, which improved to 9-2 this season against the Pirates.

                        White Sox 3, Tigers 2

CHICAGO -- Yolmer Sanchez drove in Tim Anderson with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chicago a win over Detroit.

Anderson led off the inning with a double to left field off reliever Joe Jimenez (0-2), who didn't record an out and took the loss. Sanchez laced his walk-off hit about six feet inside the foul line in right field, easily scoring Anderson from second.

Juan Minaya (2-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth.

                        • MLB notebook: Tigers 1B Cabrera suspended seven games
                          August 25, 2017

Detroit Tigers standout Miguel Cabrera was suspended seven games due to inciting the bench-clearing brawl during Thursday's game against the visiting New York Yankees.

Cabrera shoved Yankees catcher Austin Romine and threw punches at him to start the first of three bench-clearing incidents, and he received the stiffest penalty of the suspensions and fines announced Friday by Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for Major League Baseball.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez and Tigers reliever Alex Wilson each received four-game suspensions. Sanchez was disciplined for fighting, which included him throwing multiple punches.

Wilson's penalty was for intentionally throwing a pitch at New York's Todd Frazier after warnings were in place for both sides. Romine received a two-game suspension for his actions, which included throwing punches at Cabrera. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was suspended for one game due to Wilson's action while a warning was in place.

Cabrera, Sanchez, Wilson, Romine and Ausmus were also fined, as were Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson, Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle. Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias also was fined.

--The Seattle Mariners outrighted outfielder Leonys Martin to Triple-A Tacoma.

Martin was designated for assignment on Wednesday and the Mariners had seven days to trade, release or outright his contract to the minor leagues. Martin, 29, batted .174 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 34 games with Seattle this season.

Martin was acquired by the Mariners from the Texas Rangers on Nov. 16, 2015. The native of Cuba has appeared in parts of seven major league seasons with the Rangers (2011-15) and Mariners (2016-17), posting a career batting average of .248 with 38 home runs, 175 RBIs and 114 steals in 606 games.

--The Oakland Athletics placed right-hander Paul Blackburn on the 10-day disabled list with a right hand contusion.

Blackburn, 23, left Tuesday night's start in the fifth inning against the Baltimore Orioles after a liner struck him on the right wrist. The move is retroactive to Aug. 23.

Blackburn, who was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on July 1, is 3-1 with 3.22 ERA in 10 starts with Oakland in his debut season. He started on Tuesday at Baltimore and tossed four scoreless innings before he was hit on the hand by Trey Mancini's comebacker to lead off the fifth inning.

The Athletics also recalled right-hander Michael Brady and outfielder Mark Canha from Nashville.

                          • LEADING OFF: Stanton swings for 50; Blackmon, Cespedes hurt
                            August 25, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                            50 ON DECK

Giancarlo Stanton takes his first swing at reaching 50 home runs this year, a day after the Miami slugger connected twice at Marlins Park. He has 16 home runs this month, and his season total is the highest in the National League since Prince Fielder hit 50 for Milwaukee in 2007. Stanton tries for homer No. 50 against Padres rookie Dinelson Lamet.

                            MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF

Phillies rookie Rhys Hoskins has homered nine times in 16 major league games - no player has reached the mark faster. He connected Friday night vs. the visiting Cubs. Hoskins hit 29 home runs for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being promoted by Philadelphia on Aug. 10, then went 0 for 12 to start his career. He was called up from the minors too late to get a nickname on the back of his jersey for the Players Weekend festivities.

                            CHECK HIM

Rockies leadoff man Charlie Blackmon fell in apparent pain after taking a big swing at Atlanta. He appeared to grab his left hamstring after rising, and left the game with a trainer. The All-Star outfielder is hitting .337 with 30 home runs and 80 RBIs.

                            HOBBLING

Mets star Yoenis Cespedes is ailing again after straining his right hamstring running the bases at Washington. The slugger has played in only 81 games this season because of various injuries. He was put on the disabled list in April with a left hamstring injury. Cespedes is batting. 292 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs.

                            VERY VLAD

Vladimir Guerrero will be inducted into the Angels' Hall of Fame before Los Angeles hosts Houston. The outfielder who loved to swing at all sorts of pitches hit .319 with 173 home runs and 616 RBIs in six seasons, including 2004 when he was the AL MVP. Guerrero will receive a tribute, but the ceremony doesn't include having his number retired - he wore No. 27, currently taken by Angels star Mike Trout.

                            NO W IN CINCINNATI

Pirates righty Gerrit Cole is 0-6 in nine career starts against Cincinnati. He started on May 1 at Great American Ball Park and gave up three runs in six innings of the Reds' 4-3 win over the Pirates. On the plus side, Cole has won his last seven decisions on the road, leaving him 8-4 this season away from PNC Park.

                            • Saturday’s six-pack

                              — Rhys Hoskins hit 9 HR’s in his first 54 AB’s for Philly, and that includes an 0-12 start.

                              — Giancarlo Stanton had 2 HR’s, a 2B and five RBI in the first four innings vs San Diego.

                              — Patriots (-3) 30, Lions 28— Detroit trailed 24-0; gambling is difficult.

                              — Astros bench coach Alex Cora got tossed two outs into the Astros-Angels game.

                              — DeMatha HS from Maryland played at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas last night; who pays the tab for THAT road trip?

                              — Yoenis Cespedes hurt his leg running from 2nd to 3rd in the first inning; not sure how the Mets’ trainer keeps his job? The whole damn team is hurt.

                              *********************

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                              13) Baseball players are all wearing more colorful uniforms this weekend, with their nicknames on the back; apparently this is something the players wanted and got as part of the last collective bargaining agreement. I’m withholding judgment on the uniforms until later this weekend.

                              12) 49ers saved $5.2M in salary cap space Friday by cutting LB Ahmad Brooks, who played nine years for San Francisco.

                              11) Miguel Cabrera was suspended for 7 games, Gary Sanchez for 4 games as penalties for the fights in Detroit Thursday got handed down. Austin Romine only got two games.

                              10) Thru Thursday games, Texas has challenged 50 plays this season, most in MLB. Rangers have won 27 of the 50 challenges.

                              9) Padres’ OF Matt Szczur was a WR/RB for Villanova’s football team in 2009, when they won the I-AA national championship.

                              8) Washington Nationals have gotten saves from nine different pitchers this season.

                              7) Louisville signed a 10-year deal with adidas worth $160M, which buys a lot of sneakers and sweatsuits.

                              6) Happy birthdays: Sean Connery 87, Regis Philbin 86, Monty Hall 96, Rollie Fingers 71.

                              5) Over last five years, NFC East teams are 8-15 vs spread as a home favorite of 6+ points, in non-divisional games.

During that same time, the four NFC South teams are 46-25 against the spread as a non-divisional road underdog- they were 15-4 last year.

                              4) Edmonton Eskimos sold over 40,000 tickets for their game with Saskatchewan Friday night, first time in three years they’ve sold that many tickets.

                              3) With Hurricane Harvey bearing down on Texas, the University of Houston’s football team has moved its practices to the University of Texas in Austin.

                              2) Thursday night, a bettor at a William Hill sportsbook bet $1.2 million on Floyd Mayweather; if he wins, the bettor wins $240K. How do you bet $1.2M on an event like this?

That said, as much as $80M might be wagered on this fight, so guess I’m in the minority with my apathy towards it.

                              1) I don’t think I’d watch the Mayweather-McGregor fight if it was on free TV, but they’re promoting the hell out of it, and a lot of people will buy it on pay-per-view. As much as I love going to Las Vegas, this is probably a pretty good weekend not to be there.
