  • MLB roundup: Diamondbacks extend win streak to 10
    September 3, 2017

DENVER -- The Arizona Diamondbacks rested three regulars Sunday but hit three home runs and won their 10th straight game, beating the Colorado Rockies 5-1 to sweep their three-game series.

The winning streak is the longest since Arizona won a franchise-record 12 straight from June 18 to June 30, 2003. The Diamondbacks lead the Rockies by 6 1/2 games in the race for the top wild-card spot in the National League.

Ketel Marte hit a solo homer and Brandon Drury hit a two-run shot in the three-run sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Chris Iannetta homered in the eighth, and starter Zack Godley held the Rockies to three hits and one run in six innings.

    Rangers 7, Angels 6

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Elvis Andrus homered twice and drove in three runs as Texas moved back to .500 by hanging on for a victory over Los Angeles.

Andrus hit a solo homer in the third to tie the score at 2. He then added insurance to a 5-3 lead with a two-run homer to left in the sixth. It was the second two-homer game for Andrus this year. He's the first Texas shortstop to have multiple-homer games in one season since Alex Rodriguez in 2003.

Andrus'exploits helped Martin Perez (11-10) win his sixth straight start.

    Padres 6, Dodgers 4

SAN DIEGO -- Erick Aybar and Jose Pirela homered, Wil Myers hit a two-run, bases-loaded single in the seventh inning and Jhoulys Chacin held Los Angeles to two earned runs in seven innings in San Diego's win.

It marked the first time since June 2013 that the Padres won three straight against the Dodgers, who have lost eight of their last nine games.

Alex Wood, activated from the disabled list with SC joint inflammation, suffered only his second loss in 16 decisions. He allowed four runs, seven hits, and three walks in seven innings.

    Brewers 7, Nationals 2

MILWAUKEE -- Domingo Santana hit two homers and drove in three runs to lead Milwaukee to a series win over Washington.

Milwaukee bounced back from letting a late-inning lead slip away Saturday to take three of four from National League East-leading Washington.

Santana put the Brewers on the board with a solo home run off Edwin Jackson (5-4) in the second inning. After Neil Walker and Ryan Braun hit consecutive doubles in the fourth to make it 2-0, Santana blasted a two-run shot to increase Milwaukee's lead to 4-0.

    Orioles 5, Blue Jays 4

BALTIMORE -- Mark Trumbo hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning and Baltimore split a four-game series with Toronto.

Welington Castillo hit two homers, including a game-tying solo shot in the ninth as Toronto closer Roberto Osuna squandered an opportunity to tie a career high with his 36th save.

Jonathan Schoop led off the 12th with a double off Danny Barnes (2-6), and two batters later, Trumbo stroked the ball into the left field corner. Trumbo also homered for Baltimore.

    Braves 5, Cubs 1

CHICAGO -- Rio Ruiz drove in three runs and Max Fried earned a victory in his first major league start as Atlanta snapped Chicago's six-game winning streak.

Fried (1-0) limited the Cubs to one run and four hits in five innings. Fried, who had made four appearances for the Braves in relief this season, struck out four and walked three. Atlanta's bullpen combined for four scoreless innings.

The Braves, who had lost three straight games, took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when Dansby Swanson snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI single. The hit drove in Freddie Freeman, who led off the inning with a double. Ruiz extended the Atlanta lead with a single that scored Nick Markakis, who drew a one-out walk ahead of Swanson's single.

    Royals 5, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lorenzo Cain hit a go-ahead, two-run triple and Melky Cabrera drove in two runs as Kansas City took two of three games from Minnesota with a win at Target Field.

Cain's triple came shortly after Twins manager Paul Molitor was ejected by home plate umpire Marty Foster. Molitor was tossed after arguing when Cain checked his swing on an apparent third strike.

Two pitches later, Cain's two-out triple over the head of center fielder Byron Buxton put the Royals up 5-4.

    Pirates 3, Reds 1

PITTSBURGH -- Jordy Mercer and Starling Marte hit homers as Pittsburgh made the most of five hits to beat Cincinnati at PNC Park.

Trevor Williams (6-7), who was 0-3 in his previous four starts, gave up eight hits and a walk but managed to throw seven shutout innings with the help of five strikeouts and a double play. The Reds were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against him.

Felipe Rivero got his 17th save despite giving up an unearned run in the ninth.

    White Sox 6, Rays 2

CHICAGO -- Tim Anderson fell a triple shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, and Chicago cruised past Tampa Bay.

Lucas Giolito (2-1) notched a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven strong innings for the win.

Jose Abreu hit a two-run home run to complement Anderson's production at the plate. Lucas Duda hit a solo homer for the Rays.

    Astros 8, Mets 6

HOUSTON -- Cameron Maybin and George Springer homered and Houston rallied from an early three-run deficit to complete an interleague series sweep of New York at Minute Maid Park.

Maybin, making his second start since being picked up on waivers from the Los Angeles Angels last Thursday, struck the biggest blow in the Astros' five-run third inning, belting a three-run homer off Chris Flexen (3-4) to push Houston to a 6-4 lead.

Springer added his 31st homer leading off the fourth inning to stretch the lead to three runs.

    Phillies 3, Marlins 1 (12)

MIAMI -- Rookie Nick Williams hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 12th inning to lead Philadelphia to a win over Miami at Marlins Park.

Williams, who had failed to get a runner home from third base with one out in the fifth and again in the 10th, found redemption against Junichi Tazawa (3-4).

The winning rally started with a leadoff single by Daniel Nava. Pinch-runner Ricardo Pinto, a pitcher, came in and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ty Kelly. Pinto made it to third on a passed ball from catcher A.J. Ellis and scored when Williams pulled a 1-1 pitch to right.

    Cardinals 7, Giants 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Paul DeJong and Jose Martinez smacked back-to-back home runs off Madison Bumgarner, and Harrison Bader added a solo shot two innings later to power St. Louis past San Francisco.

Luke Weaver struck out nine in seven strong innings as the Cardinals took three of four in the series. The win allowed St. Louis to move within three games of Colorado for the second wild-card playoff spot in the National League.

The day wasn't a total loss for Bumgarner, who allowed five runs and five hits in six innings. He hit his third homer of the year that temporarily tied the score at 2.

    Mariners 10, A's 2

SEATTLE -- Seattle used three home runs and a strong start from Andrew Albers to complete a three-game sweep of Oakland.

Albers threw five no-hit innings before allowing a leadoff homer in the sixth, and Robinson Cano, Carlos Ruiz and Mitch Haniger all homered.

Seattle blew the game open with a five-run eighth inning. Cano finished with four hits and as many RBIs and Haniger went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

    Indians 11, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Jose Ramirez hit two home runs and three doubles for the 13th five extra-base hit game by a player in major league history, leading the Indians over the Tigers. Both of his home runs never left the park on their own.

Francisco Lindor set a club record for homers by a Cleveland shortstop with his 26th and Josh Tomlin (8-9), on the disabled list since the end of July, pitched one-run ball for 5 2/3 innings.

    Yankees 9, Red Sox 2

NEW YORK -- Aaron Judge hit his first home run in more than two weeks, and New York blasted three homers against Boston ace Chris Sale and concluded the season series against its rivals with a victory.

Judge hit his league-leading 38th homer with two outs in the sixth off Addison Reed when he drove the right-hander's 1-1 fastball an estimated 469 feet halfway up the left field bleachers. The ball traveled 115.1 mph and ended his season-high 57-at-bat drought without a homer.

Judge hit his first homer since the fourth-inning, upper-deck shot off New York Mets right-hander Robert Gsellman on Aug. 16 at Citi Field. The Sunday blast occurred after Chase Headley, Matt Holliday and Todd Frazier hit solo homers off Sale.

      ************************

      Monday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

      13) If you have season tickets for an NFL team, you buy 10 games at regular season prices; the obvious problem is this: 2 of those 10 games are exhibition games.

NFL should reduce the price of those two unwatchable preseason games to $25, which would allow people who don’t normally go to exhibition games to go. At some point, the owners have to stop sucking every last dollar from the consumer. Its not good business. Greed isn’t good.

      12) 37 Buccaneers sat out their exhibition game Thursday night; assuming all of those guys are making the squad, that means only 16 players who will be Bucs in Week 1 played vs Washington.

      11) NFL owners get stadiums built for them; they’re rich people with a sense of entitlement that is out of control. At some point, NFL owners need to give something back to their communities.

      10) Seahawks acquired defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson from the Jets on Friday. In return, Seattle sent WR Jermaine Kearse and a 2018 2nd-round draft pick to New Jersey.

      9) A professional golfer named Kelly Kraft (#64 in FedEx Cup standings) made a 12 on the par-5 second hole Friday, shot a 44 on the front nine, then withdrew with a foot injury. Oy.

      8) Nigel Williams-Goss transferred from Washington to Gonzaga, sat out 2015-16, then helped the Zags make the Final Four last year. He skipped his senior year at Gonzaga, was drafted in the second round by Utah, but instead of getting a two-way contract with Utah, he is off to Serbia to play ball for $130,000 this season. Curious decision.

      7) 49ers cut QB Matt Barkley, who figures to get picked up by someone (Buffalo??). Browns cut Brock Osweiler, who still banks $16M from Cleveland— Osweiler is headed back to Denver with a hefty bank account, but with very little success on the field.

      6) Baseball players who are September 1st call-ups making minimum MLB salary ($535,000 a year) will earn $90,628 for the rest of the season.

      5) Was reading where Justin Verlander approved his trade to Houston one minute before the trade deadline. Supposedly there was a chance he would be traded to the Cubs, but that fell thru.

      4) UL-Lafayette 51, SE Louisiana 48— Ragin’ Cajuns ran two kicks back for TD’s; Lions ran a punt back for a score. With 0:42 left, SE Louisiana scored a TD to make score 49-48- they went for two points and the win, but their QB fumbled and ULL ran it back for two points of their own. Game was 35-35 at halftime.

      3) Cleveland Browns’ three QB’s (Kizer-Kessler-Hogan) have a total of zero NFL wins to their credit. Browns are paying Brock Osweiler $15M+ to be a backup in Denver.

Dolphins signed K Cody Parkey, which means RPI alum Andrew Franks is out of a job, at least for now.

      2) Indians 11, Tigers 1— Cleveland has won 11 games in a row.

      1) Jets, Jaguars, Browns picked up five guys each off the waiver wire; Ram picked up three, the Colts four. Most of the better teams didn’t add anyone— you can get a little bit of a feel of who the better teams are by seeing which teams add which players.

      • MLB notebook: Yankees, Red Sox raise money for hurricane victims
        September 3, 2017

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will partner to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief by auctioning off various items of autographed team memorabilia from Sunday night's game at Yankee Stadium.

All of the proceeds raised through this initiative will go to support hurricane relief efforts, the teams announced Sunday in a joint press release.

Yankees items, including game-used jerseys from all players and coaches from Sunday night's game, will be available to be bid upon at www.steinersports.com/harvey. Red Sox items, including game-used jerseys from all players and coaches from Sunday night's game, will be available to be bid upon at www.redsox.com/harvey.

--The Yankees placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

Hicks suffered the injury in Saturday's game against Boston while making a running catch of Hanley Ramirez's deep drive to center in the top of the sixth inning

Jacoby Ellsbury came in to replace Hicks in the Yankees' 5-1 victory at Yankee Stadium. Ellsbury likely will move into the starting lineup while Hicks is sidelined.

Hicks, 27, missed 39 games earlier this season due to a right oblique strain. He has hit .207 in 22 games since returning on Aug. 10 with three homers and 11 RBIs. For the season, he is hitting .265 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs in 82 games.

--Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves in the third inning with an injury.

Baez took a knee to the head during a headfirst slide on a stolen base attempt in the second inning. Baez, who was called out, remained on the ground after making contact with Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson and was checked out by Cubs trainer P.J. Mainville.

Baez took the field in the third inning before motioning to the Cubs dugout to alert manager Joe Maddon that he needed to leave the game. Mike Freeman replaced Baez at shortstop.

        --The Pittsburgh Pirates
placed infielder Josh Harrison on the 10-day disabled list with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his left hand, the team announced.

Harrison, 30, suffered the injury Saturday night when he was hit by a 96 mph pitch thrown by Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle in the fifth inning. It was Harrison's major-league-leading 23rd time being hit by a pitch this season. He is batting .272 with 16 home runs and 47 RBIs in 128 games.

In a corresponding move, the Pirates recalled outfielder/infielder Chris Bostick from Triple-A Indianapolis.

        • LEADING OFF: Indians aim for 12th in row, Arizona after 11th
          September 3, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

          LABOR OF LOVE

The streaking Cleveland Indians try to win their 12th in a row when they open a series in Chicago against the White Sox. The AL Central leaders are having their best run since setting a team record with 14 straight wins last year, and have outscored opponents 79-18 during this string. Trevor Bauer (14-8, 4.46) is set to start for the Indians - he's won a career-best seven consecutive decisions.

          ARIZONA AHEAD

The Diamondbacks have either led or been tied for 79 straight innings. That's resulted in a 10-game winning streak for Arizona, its best since a franchise-best 12 wins in a row in 2003. Next up is a series at Dodger Stadium, with lefty Robbie Ray facing Los Angeles lefty Rich Hill. The Dodgers have the best record in the majors despite losing eight of their last nine.

          CHECK HIM

The Cubs will see how Javier Baez is feeling, a day after he exited because of blurred vision in his right eye. He was hurt when he made a dive into second base and took a knee from Atlanta second baseman Ozzie Albies. Baez has been filling in at shortstop with Addison Russell sidelined since early August because of a strained right foot. The Cubs play at Pittsburgh.

          RESTLESS NIGHT

It's a quick turnaround for the Yankees following Sunday night's home game vs. Boston. New York plays at 2:05 p.m. EDT in Baltimore, a division rival chasing the Yankees in the AL wild-card race. New York got a bit of a break when the start of Sunday night's game was moved up 30 minutes to 7:35 p.m., and the opener against the surging Orioles was pushed back a half-hour as well. Baltimore right-hander Dylan Bundy (13-8, 3.94 ERA) is coming off a one-hitter vs. Seattle for his first career shutout. The Yankees are skipping Jaime Garcia and starting rookie lefty Jordan Montgomery (7-7, 4.15) instead.

          MAYBE

Slumping shortstop Xander Bogaerts could return to Boston's lineup after missing three straight starts. Bogaerts has batted just .201 since being hit on the hand by a pitch July 6. The AL East-leading Red Sox host Toronto.

          • Monday's Diamond Notes
            September 3, 2017

Hottest team: Indians (11-0 last 11) at White Sox

Last season, Cleveland put together an incredible 14-game winning streak that propelled them to the top of the AL Central. The Indians started slowly this season after falling in Game 7 of the World Series, but the Tribe is back on the winning track following a four-game sweep of the depleted Tigers. Cleveland has extended its advantage in the AL Central to nine games over Minnesota, while posting an incredible 32-11 record in the past 43 contests.

The Indians are expected to keep the money train rolling into the South Side of Chicago to face the last-place White Sox. Trevor Bauer takes the mound in the series opener as the right-hander has won each of his past four starts, while Cleveland has compiled a 7-1 mark in his previous eight starts.

Coldest team: Athletics (0-6 last six) vs. Angels

Oakland isn’t heading to the playoffs, as the A’s look like they are playing out the string. Following a three-game home sweep of the Rangers last weekend, the A’s were swept by the Angels and Mariners on the road. Oakland squandered a five-run lead in a 10-8 defeat at Los Angeles and blew a four-run advantage in Saturday’s 7-6 walk-off setback at Seattle. After this disastrous road swing, Oakland has dropped 10 of its past 12 games away from the Coliseum.

The A’s return home in a quick revenge spot against the Angels, who took three from Oakland last week. Chris Smith looks for his first victory of the season for Oakland as the right-hander allowed 12 earned runs in his last two starts, including seven in 3.2 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Angels on August 29.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (14-8, 3.36 ERA)

Chicago owns a 3 ½-game edge over Milwaukee in the NL Central as the Cubs will try to extend that advantage in Pittsburgh over the next few days. Arrieta is returning to his Cy Young form of 2015 by going 4-0 in his past five starts, including a dominating performance against the Pirates. Last Tuesday, Arrieta scattered two hits in six scoreless innings of a 4-1 home triumph over Pittsburgh to pick up his first win against the Bucs in four starts this season.

Coldest pitcher: A.J. Cole, Nationals (1-4, 4.50 ERA)

Although Washington is cruising atop the NL East, it wasn’t smooth sailing last month for Cole. The right-hander lost all four of his August starts, including three defeats at Nationals Park. The last time Cole squared off with the Marlins in Miami, he put together his worst start of the season by allowing five earned runs in five innings of a 7-0 loss on August 2. The only good news for Cole is the Nationals have won six of the previous seven matchups with the Marlins, although each game occurred in D.C.

Biggest OVER run: Rangers (5-1-2 last eight)

Texas is still hanging around in the AL Wild Card race after taking two of three from Los Angeles at home. All three games saw plenty of runs, including the Rangers winning a pair of one-run contests. Sunday’s 7-6 victory by Texas eclipsed the OVER for the second time over the weekend as all three totals closed at 10 ½ or higher. Texas travels to Atlanta for an interleague series as Andrew Cashner heads to the mound for the Rangers. In Cashner’s last 10 starts, the UNDER has hit eight times, while going 5-2-1 to the UNDER in his past eight road outings.

Biggest UNDER run: Red Sox (7-2 last nine)

The AL East race is tightening up after the Yankees captured three of four games from Boston to cut the Red Sox deficit to 3 ½ games atop the division. Boston returns home to battle Toronto as five of the past seven meetings between these division rivals have finished UNDER the total, including three of the previous four contests at Fenway Park. Rick Porcello has drilled the UNDER in both starts against Toronto this season, while limiting the Blue Jays to four runs (one earned) in 13.2 innings of work.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles is trending in the wrong direction of late by losing eight of nine, including dropping three of four at San Diego this past weekend. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks have caught fire by running off 10 consecutive victories, including a huge three-game sweep at Colorado to extend its Wild Card advantage to 6 ½ games over the Rockies.

During this 10-game hot streak, the D-backs pulled off a three-game sweep of the Dodgers at Chase Field last week, while plating 21 runs. In the middle game of that set, Robbie Ray shut down the powerful Los Angeles lineup by striking out 10 batters and yielding four hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings of a 6-4 victory. Arizona owns a 3-1 record in Ray’s four starts against Los Angeles this season, while the southpaw has struck out 10 or more three times.

The Dodgers counter with another left-hander in Rich Hill. Two starts ago, Hill took a no-hitter in the tenth inning at Pittsburgh before allowing a walk-off home run and ultimately losing, 1-0. Hill struggled in his most recent outing at Arizona by giving up five runs in the first inning of a 7-6 defeat. Since coming over to the Dodgers last season, Los Angeles has lost three of Hill’s four starts against Arizona.

            Betcha didn’t know:
Whenever Padres’ right-hander Luis Perdomo takes the mound, you can count on him tossing six innings. Perdomo has gone six innings in six consecutive starts, including in a 4-3 victory as a +205 underdog at St. Louis on August 24. Perdomo faces the Cardinals once again at Petco Park as the Padres have six of his past eight home starts.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-230) at White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+110) at Rays

Biggest line move: Reds (+115 to +105) vs. Brewers

                        • No panic among slumping Dodgers heading into stretch run
                          September 4, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) Strong finishes have been the hallmark of the Los Angeles Dodgers in recent years, so their current season-worst stretch of eight losses in nine games isn't causing any panic.

The Dodgers continue to cruise with baseball's best mark of 92-44 while playing the final month of the season with no urgency to win. They've all but mathematically locked up a record fifth consecutive NL West title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Their status as a prohibitive World Series favorite is secure, too.

''Everyone is pretty focused on one game at a time,'' third baseman Justin Turner said. ''We've done a great job of it all year, not looking ahead and not looking at what we've already accomplished.''

They're on a pace to become the only team in the majors to win more than 100 games and if they split their remaining 26 games it would give them a franchise record-tying 105 wins for the first time since 1953.

For the last few months, it looked like the Dodgers would challenge Seattle's major-league single-season record of 116 victories, but that possibility all but ended with their current slump.

The Dodgers return home Monday to host second-place Arizona, which swept them in Phoenix last week. Colorado arrives later in the week for a four-game series.

Los Angeles is getting its big guns back just in time for the stretch run.

Ace Clayton Kershaw came off the disabled list and was sharp in his first start in five weeks, holding San Diego to two infield singles in six innings in a 1-0 victory last Friday. Fellow lefty Alex Wood returned from the DL on Sunday and lost for just the second time since July 21.

Los Angeles has 13 games remaining both at home and on the road, including a visit to NL East-leading Washington.

''These guys are trying to win every single game and there's a certain way we play every single day,'' manager Dave Roberts said. ''I don't see that changing.''

In their first season under Roberts, the Dodgers went 17-10 from Sept. 1 to the end of the regular season last year. In three previous seasons under manager Don Mattingly, they were 48-35 over the same stretch.

They won't need to be that dominant to win another division title, so clinching early would allow the Dodgers to set up their rotation for the NL Division Series.

''We do have that luxury,'' Roberts said.

At the same time, though, he's wary of giving players too much time off.

''They could be rested, but they still have to be sharp,'' Roberts said. ''The conversations I have with position players and our pitchers on a daily basis is to understand their individual needs. I could say give Corey Seager (time off), but who is to say he's going to come back sharp? You've got to manage those things.''

Turner isn't worried about the Dodgers shutting it off the rest of this month and then trying to turn it back on for the postseason.

''With this team competing every night and not worrying about the records or where we're at, that's going to create a positive environment throughout September and a competitive environment,'' he said.

''Guys are going to be playing to make postseason rosters and earn jobs in the postseason. There's going to be a lot of competition. Whichever way it shakes out, we're going to continue getting better.''

Regardless of what the Dodgers have done so far, nothing matters until October rolls around. This is a tradition-rich franchise eager to make its first World Series appearance since 1988.

''It just goes back to the maturity of the team and understanding how to show up and win a game every night,'' Turner said. ''It really doesn't matter what day of the year it is.''

                              • PREVIEW
STAMPS, ESKS DUEL FOR FIRST ON LABOUR DAY

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos meet at McMahon Stadium on Monday in a Labour Day Classic matchup with much more than provincial pride on the line.

Dave Dickenson’s Stamps have been the class of the league in recent weeks, and enter their Week 11 matchup as owners of a league-best 7-1-1 record.

Jason Maas’s Eskimos, on the flip side, have seen their 7-0 start drop to a 7-2 record following losses to Winnipeg (33-26, Week 9) and Saskatchewan (54-31, Week 10).

The two squads will square off on Monday afternoon in Calgary in what promises to be an enticing first-place matchup.

For the first time in what seems like forever, the Edmonton Eskimos are relatively healthy.

Star receiver Adarius Bowman — out since Week 4 due to injury — is back, while linebacker Adam Konar makes his return from the six-game injured list.

Eskimos pivot Mike Reilly hopes the return of Bowman and a long week of practice will help him flush a season-worst 160-yard, two-interception performance last week against Saskatchewan.

“Any time Adarius is on our roster, it’s a great thing — he’s brought that energy to our team this week,” Reilly told Esks.com. “Playing a rival on Labour Day, I’m very excited for it. It feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve been on the field.”

The Edmonton gunslinger reviewed the tape of his lacklustre performance against Saskatchewan and found a return to simplicity is in order.

“As a quarterback, (success) is going through your reads and not trying to take what’s not there — that only gets you in trouble,” said Reilly. “You’re not going to have success if you try to force the issues, (and) that holds true against Calgary, because they’re a very good defence.”

Part of Reilly’s success, or lack thereof in Monday’s Labour Day showdown with the first-place Stamps, will tie into the return of Bowman; the star slotback has broken the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each of the last three seasons, but will need a remarkable a second half to reach the milestone in 2017.

“I’m so excited, words really can’t explain it,” explained Bowman. “We know coming over here (to Calgary) that we have to be close to perfect, but what better game to come back for?”

Like everybody associated with the Esks organization has reiterated throughout an injury-plagued 2017 season, Bowman credited the men ‘upstairs’ with fielding a deep roster in his absence.

“This year, truly, the guys upstairs did a great job of putting a lot of (good) players on the field,” said Bowman. “In history, you see a team take some injuries at a position group — anywhere on the field — and there’s a major drop. But here, everybody is performing.”

With regular kicker Sean Whyte still out of the lineup, the Eskimos will welcome veteran kicker Chris Milo to the lineup on Monday. Edmonton, which signed the Laval product on Sept. 2, is the third CFL stop for the 30-year-old, who has also suited up for Saskatchewan (2011-15) and Ottawa (2015-16). Hugh O’Neill remains rostered and will likely handle punting duties.

The Calgary Stampeders have been playing winning football for some time now, but this week’s Labour Day rivalry matchup against the Edmonton Eskimos presents a whole new challenge.

“It’s been such a great challenge to go up against Edmonton the last three or four years, (and you) need that back and forth (in a rivalry),” Stamps head coach Dave Dickenson told Stampeders.com. “It was a heavy, heavy rivalry back in the 90’s, now it feels like it’s 100 per cent back.”

Monday’s matchup features a mouth-watering matchup between Reilly and Stamps pivot Bo Levi Mitchell. The latter sees the former as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks, and hopes the Edmonton quarterback slips up at McMahon.

“Mike’s one of those guys that, no matter what you’re up by, you know he’s going to rally his guys and put some points up,” explained Mitchell of his Monday counterpart before cracking a joke. “He plays his best in the 4th (quarter, so) I hope he stays healthy, has a bad game, and gives us the win.”

National Calgary receiver Anthony Parker, currently sixth on the team in receiving yards with 226, will suit up for his 100th game on Monday.

“Flair for the dramatic, eh,” laughed the Vancouver native. “It’s cool, when I saw it at the start of the season…Labour Day, the 100th game…it was a big focus on staying healthy to get to this point.”

Homegrown Stamps running back Anthony Woodson was added to the 46-man roster ahead of Monday’s clash with the Eskimos; the born-and-bred Calgary back understands the importance of a provincial showdown on Labour Day.

“I do remember the Labour Day games our coach (Dave Dickenson) was involved in,’’ said Woodson. “Those were huge (and) they made a big impact on me. That’s when I was old enough to be a real Stamps fan.”

Now, the 29 year-old — signed in February following stops in Winnipeg, Toronto and Hamilton — will get a chance to strap on the pads in the historic game for himself.

                                By The Numbers

12 – Sacks allowed by Calgary, the fewest in the league. Ball security and pocket protection have been integral to the success of Bo Levi Mitchell and the offence thus far in 2017.

31:31 – Average time of possession for Edmonton (31:32) and Calgary (31:30), the two teams who enjoy the greatest average share of possession in the CFL.

88.3 – QUAR rating for Edmonton’s Mike Reilly, second only to Winnipeg’s Matt Nichols (88.9).

169 – League-low points allowed by Calgary’s defence. The next closest? Saskatchewan at 227, 58 points away with the same amount of games played.

                                The Skinny

In terms of regular-season contests, it doesn’t get much more fun than this sequence: Eskimos. Stampeders. Labour Day. First place on the line.

Mike Reilly is looking to bounce back from one of the poorest starts of his career, while Edmonton is trying to right the ship following a two-game losing skid.

Bo Levi Mitchell and the Stamps are trying to continue their winning ways and create some separation from the pack in the CFL’s ultra-competitive West Division.

The two squads will meet at McMahon on Monday night with the stakes high, the atmosphere rowdy and an entire province — and division — tuned in with rapt attention.

Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. ET and can be followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker and seen on TSN and ESPN 3.
