  • Thank you, NYC: Jeter toasts city ahead of jersey retirement
    May 11, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Derek Jeter is paying tribute to New York City a few days before the Yankees permanently retire his jersey.

Jeter posted an essay titled ''Thank You, New York'' on his Players' Tribune website on Thursday. Jeter writes about being ''quiet, unsure and a little intimidated'' coming to New York after growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He praises the city for supporting him throughout his 20 seasons with the Yankees writing, ''I'll never forget how you looked out for me.''

The piece is accompanied by a video in which Jeter and other New Yorkers recite the essay.

The Yankees will retire Jeter's No. 2 on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium ahead of their game against the Houston Astros. The 14-time All-Star shortstop helped lead New York to five World Series titles.

    Phillies extend manager Mackanin's contract
    May 11, 2017

The Philadelphia Phillies and manager Pete Mackanin agreed to a contract extension, the team announced on Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Mackanin's deal will carry him through the 2018 season with a club option that extends into the 2019 campaign.

Mackanin had been in the final season of his previous contract, which included a 2018 club option.

The 65-year-old became the interim manager of the Phillies during the 2015 season and is guiding the club through its extensive rebuilding process.

Mackanin has posted a 121-160 mark as Philadelphia's manager. He served as the team's bench coach from 2009-12 under manager Charlie Manuel and third-base coach under Ryne Sandberg, whom Mackanin replaced as manager on June 26, 2015.

Dodgers lose OF Toles for season
    May 11, 2017

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles will need season-ending surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The injury occurred Tuesday night in the seventh inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, when he collided with the outfield wall. Toles was hurt trying to catch Andrew McCutchen's ground-rule double to left field that ended Dodgers starter Julio Urias' no-hit bid.

X-rays were negative, and Toles underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday, which revealed the extent of the damage.

The 24-year-old was batting .271 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 31 games this season. He made his major league debut on July 8, 2016, and he hit .314 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 48 games last year.

Toles is expected to have the knee operation in seven to 10 days.

MLB notebook: Iwakuma added to Mariners' growing disabled list
    May 10, 2017

Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma joined three other Seattle Mariners' starting pitchers on the disabled list Wednesday.

Iwakuma, 36, will be sidelined with right shoulder inflammation. He joins Felix Hernandez (shoulder), Drew Smyly (flexor tendon) and James Paxton (forearm strain) on the DL, leaving right-hander Yovani Gallardo as the only starter from the Opening Day rotation.

Right-hander Sam Gaviglio was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to fill the vacant spot on the 25-man roster. He is 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA in five minor league starts this season.

Iwakuma is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA in six starts. The move to the disabled list is retroactive to May 4.

--Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout could return to the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics, manager Mike Scioscia announced.

Trout, the two-time American League Most Valuable Player, was held out of the starting lineup for the fifth straight game on Wednesday with an ailing left hamstring.

Trout, who is in the midst of a career-high 17-game hitting streak, entered play on Wednesday with an AL-best .355 batting average. He also has eight homers and 21 RBIs this season.

--Washington Nationals center fielder Adam Eaton began a rehabilitation program that should last about six to nine months, general manager Mike Rizzo said before the team faced the Baltimore Orioles.

Eaton underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament that he sustained on April 28 when he beat out an infield hit in the ninth inning against the New York Mets.

--Four blown saves in 11 chances forced the Detroit Tigers to pull the plug on Francisco Rodriguez as closer.

Rodriguez, who ranks fourth in career saves with 437, blew saves in each of the past two games, both losses to the Oakland Athletics. Sunday's loss came on a two-run home run off Rodriguez by Ryon Healy. Rodriguez's ERA is 8.49 in 11 2/3 innings.

Left-hander strikeout specialist Justin Wilson was installed as closer by manager Brad Ausmus.

      • Friday’s six-pack

Some interesting pointspreads for NFL games this season:

        — Week 8: Broncos @ Chiefs (-3)

        — Week 9: Rams @ Giants (-8.5)

        — Week 10: Seahawks (-1.5) @ Cardinals

        — Week 11: Patriots (-1.5) vs Raiders (@ Mexico City)

        — Week 12: Packers @ Steelers (-3)

        — Week 13: Eagles @ Seahawks (-7)

        ***************************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

        13) We talked the other day about Sabres-Rangers playing at Citi Field on New Years’ Day; Buffalo will be the “home” team for that game, meaning they give up a home game in Buffalo for this game to be played in NYC. It is the Rangers’ third outdoor game in NYC- they were the “visitor” in all three.

Why? Because if the Rangers play a home game outside of Madison Square Garden, it costs them a tax exemption that could be worth as much as $40M—that’s million, with an M.

        Oy.

        12) More bad news for the New York Mets; closer Jeurys Familia has an arterial clot in his shoulder and might need surgery.

        11) This is one I’ve never heard before; Yale has a really good guard named Makai Mason, who helped the Bulldogs make the NCAA’s in 2016, where they upset Baylor in a first-round game. Mason broke his foot last year and missed the whole season.

Mason is going to graduate from Yale at this time next year; he is going to play for the Bulldogs this coming winter, then he is going to be a graduate transfer at (ironically) Baylor in 2018-19.

I’ve never heard of a player announcing where he will transfer to a full year before he actually transfers. Ivy League players can’t take a redshirt season like most D-I players can, but still it is odd that he got the suspense out of the way and now everyone knows he will be in Waco in the fall of 2018.

        10) If you’re looking for a good TV series to follow, I’d recommend Billions on Showtime; it is about a rich hedge-fund trader and a US Prosecutor who despise each other- the prosecutor’s wife works for the hedge fund guy, which complicates the whole story tremendously. It is really well done with lot of twists and turns. I’m a little disappointed that Season 3 won’t be on until 2018.

They’ve had 24 episodes over two seasons; you can stream them on Showtimeanytime.com

        9) Pittsburgh Penguins have played ten playoff series against Washington and won nine of them.

        8) Washington’s Alex Ovechkin is a great player, but he’s played 12 years in the NHL and has never been past the second round of the playoffs.

        7) The guy who went to the A’s game in Oakland Wednesday dressed as an elf did that because he was the last place finisher in his office’s March Madness pool and that was his penalty for finishing last.

        6) A senior media relations guy for the Milwaukee Brewers had a cool job Thursday; he was the ball boy down the leftfield line at Miller Park. He took a decent amount of grief on Brewers’ TV but seemed to be enjoying himself.

        5) Arizona Cardinals signed Blaine Gabbert as a backup QB, unwittingly igniting a controversy, since Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed. Supposedly, three teams have inquired about Kaepernick, but ain’t no one signed him and off-season workouts have already begun.

Fact of the matter is this: Whomever convinced Kaepernick to take his political stand last fall screwed him over and greatly hindered his NFL career, costing him millions. Hope it was worth it.

        4) Rookies pitchers started the Colorado Rockies’ last four games; kid from North Colonie (I live in South Colonie) pitched for Colorado last night. He is winning 10-1 as I type this, so good for him.

        3) Steve Stone was just saying on the White Sox game that the ideal difference in speed between a fastball and change-up is 11 miles an hour. Interesting thing to monitor while watching a game.

        2) Teams ask players weird stuff at these draft combines; an NBA team asked Kansas’ Frank Mason III this week “……how he would prefer to die?” What does that have to do with basketball

Apparently, Kawhi Leonard was so nervous at his Combine interview with the Phoenix Suns that he sweated thru his suit. Because of that, the Suns took him off their draft board. Brilliant!!!!

        1) Spurs 114, Rockets 75—Leonard didn’t play in this game, so of course the Spurs won by 39. Bookmakers in Las Vegas had to enjoy this outcome. This, from David Payne Purdum on Twitter: “(A bettor in Nevada) placed 3 six-figure money-line bets on Rockets to beat Spurs tonight, totaling $386,000, to win $120,000.”

        Yikes.

        • LEADING OFF: Mets' Harvey returns; Cards go for 7th in a row
          May 11, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

          HARVEY'S RETURN

Matt Harvey is scheduled to make his first start for the New York Mets since serving a three-day suspension for skipping a game last weekend following a late night on the town. The 28-year-old right-hander acknowledged on Tuesday that he was out after last Friday night's game ''past curfew'' and then played golf Saturday morning. He did not show up at Citi Field for that night's game against Miami and took ''full blame'' for that. Harvey was scheduled to start Sunday afternoon, but when he arrived at the ballpark he was sent home by the team. Harvey (2-2), who apologized to his teammates, the fans and the organization, will face the Brewers and Matt Garza (1-0) in Milwaukee.

          GOING FOR LUCKY No. 7

St. Louis erased a four-run deficit on Wednesday night and rallied to beat Miami 7-5 for the Cardinals' sixth straight victory. They'll be going for No. 7 in a row on Friday night to kick off an eight-game homestand when right-hander Mike Leake (4-1) takes the mound against the Chicago Cubs. Leake is looking to extend a personal four-game win streak and he'll be opposed by Eddie Butler, who'll be making his Cubs debut after spending the last three seasons with Colorado.

          LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK

Minnesota Twins ace right-hander Ervin Santana (5-1, 1.72) will try to rebound from his first loss this season when he faces Indians righty Josh Tomlin (2-3, 7.12) in the opener of a three-game series at Cleveland on Friday night. Santana allowed a season-high six runs in six innings to Boston last Sunday.

          KEEPING IT SIMPLE

After Washington's home game against Baltimore was rained out Thursday night, the Nationals announced that they will skip Thursday starter A.J. Cole and keep the same pitching lineup they set in place for their next series against visiting Philadelphia: Tanner Roark, Gio Gonzalez, Max Scherzer. Meanwhile, the Orioles pushed back their starting rotation. Dylan Bundy, Thursday's scheduled starter, will go Friday at Kansas City, followed by Chris Tillman and Kevin Gausman.

          AIMING FOR YAZ

Albert Pujols will enter the Angels' game against the Detroit Tigers needing two RBIs to tie Carl Yastrzemski for 13th on baseball's career list. Pujols has 1,842 RBIs, including 25 this season for Los Angeles.

          ROLLIN' RICK

After ending a four-game losing skid in his last outing, Rick Porcello (2-4) will take the mound for Boston in the opener of a three-game homestand against Tampa Bay, which will start Alex Cobb (2-3). Porcello, the AL Cy Young winner last year, has a 1.69 ERA in his last four starts.

Hottest team: Cardinals (6-0 last six)

St. Louis returns home following a perfect 6-0 road swing at Atlanta and Miami as the Cardinals have crawled out of a 3-9 hole to own a 19-14 record. The Cardinals have flown into first place of the NL Central as they host the rival Cubs in a critical series at Busch Stadium this weekend.

The defending champions are making their second trip to St. Louis this season after capturing two of the first three meetings with the Cardinals. Chicago has dropped five of its past six games to fall to .500, while the Cardinals pulled off a pair of late rallies to stun the Marlins to finish off a three-game sweep. During this six-game winning streak, the Cardinals plated five runs or more, while cashing the OVER five times.

Coldest team: Braves (2-8 last 10)

Remember when Atlanta won five consecutive games in mid-April? That streak is long-gone as the Braves are skidding out of control by dropping six in a row, including getting swept by the Astros and Cardinals. Amazingly, the Braves also put together a four-game hot streak towards the end of April, but the team is a dreadful 2-20 when removing those two winning stretches.

Atlanta heads to Miami to face a Marlins’ squad who is also struggling by losing eight of their past 10 games. Mike Foltynewicz is winless in five starts for the Braves, while coming off his worst start of the season by allowing seven earned runs in four innings of a 10-0 rout by the Cardinals. The only piece of good news for Atlanta is Miami enters the weekend at 1-7 in its previous eight home contests.

                    Hottest pitcher:
Mike Leake, Cardinals (4-1, 1.79 ERA)

Leake has been the anchor of this St. Louis resurgence following the slow start as the veteran right-hander has compiled six quality outings this season. Leake is coming off a victory at Atlanta his last time out, while allowing only one home run in his six starts, which is a dramatically better pace than in 2016 when he gave up 20 gopher balls in 30 starts.

The former Reds and Giants’ hurler has yielded one earned run in each of his two home starts this season, but Leake struggled In against the Cubs last season. St. Louis posted a 1-3 record in Leake’s four outings against Chicago, while allowing 16 runs in 22.1 innings, including a pair of defeats at Busch Stadium.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Harvey, Mets (2-2, 5.14 ERA)

In 2015, Harvey was the toast of New York by helping lead the Mets to the National League pennant and a 13-8 regular season record. In 2016, the right-hander slumped to 4-10 with a bloated ERA of 4.86 before his season ended in June due to injury. Fast-forward to 2017 and the Dark Knight is winless in his last four outings, while coming off a brief three-day suspension for a violation of team rules.

Harvey returns to the mound at Milwaukee after allowing 12 earned runs in 9.2 innings of two losses to the Braves, as he faces a team outside the NL East for the first time this season. Since the start of 2016, the Mets have posted a 4-9 record in Harvey’s 13 road starts, but one of those victories came at Miller Park last season when New York held off Milwaukee, 2-1 as short underdogs last June.

                    Biggest OVER run
                    : Phillies (7-2 last nine)

Philadelphia’s pitching was lit up the last two games in losses to Seattle by yielding 21 runs. The Phillies managed to score 15 runs in those defeats, but fell to 1-7 in the last eight games due to dreadful pitching. In this recent stretch, the Fightin’ Phils have given up at least five runs seven times in the last eight contests.

Philadelphia and Washington are playing their fourth series of the season this weekend as the teams hook up at Nationals Park. The Phillies face Tanner Roark in the opener as the Nationals’ right-hander has the cashed the OVER in three straight starts even though he limited Philadelphia to two unearned runs in six innings the last time he saw them in a 6-5 defeat.

                    Biggest UNDER run
                    : Pirates (6-1-1 last eight)

Pittsburgh’s offense continues to struggle after racking up only one hit in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat at Arizona. The Pirates have been held to two runs or fewer in seven of the last nine games, while dropping five straight overall. The UNDER is 2-4 in Game 2’s on the road for Pittsburgh this season, as the Bucs have scored one run or less three times in these contests.

The Pirates are hitting only .204 against left-handed pitching this season as they face southpaw Patrick Corbin on Friday in Arizona. Pittsburgh owns a 5-2 record towards the UNDER against left-handed starting hurlers, but right-hander Tyler Glasnow is 4-0-1 to the OVER in his previous five starts.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Yankees

Houston and New York could be on a collision course to meet in the postseason. The Astros held off the Yankees in the first meeting on Thursday, 3-2 behind another strong performance from Dallas Keuchel, who tossed six innings and allowed one run, while striking out nine batters to improve to 6-0. New York made it interesting in the ninth inning by creeping within one run on a Gary Sanchez RBI single, but Jacoby Ellsbury was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

The Astros look to extend their winning streak to five as Lance McCullers, Jr. takes the mound. McCullers, Jr. is winless in three road starts this season, but is coming off his best away outing by allowing two hits and one run in seven innings of a 2-1 defeat to the Angels. The right-hander beat the Yankees last season at home, 4-1, while striking out 10 batters in six innings of work.

The Yankees counter with southpaw Jordan Montgomery, who beat the Cubs as a road underdog last Saturday, 11-6. Montgomery has given up three earned runs in four of five starts, while New York owns a 2-1 mark in his three home outings. The Yankees have lost consecutive home games only once this season, while the Astros are 0-3 in their three road games off a series opening victory.

Betcha didn’t know: The Dodgers look to bounce back after falling to the Rockies on Thursday, 10-7. Clayton Kershaw heads to the mound for Los Angeles as he seen plenty of success at Coors Field in his career. Since 2013, the Dodgers are 7-1 in his last eight starts in Denver, but the only loss came last month in a 4-2 defeat as a -200 favorite. Kershaw opened up as a -200 favorite for Friday’s opener against the red-hot Rockies.

                    Biggest public favorite:
                    Dodgers (-200) at Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Mariners (+115) at Blue Jays

Biggest line move: Astros (-120 to -130) at Yankees

                        May 15, 2017

MIAMI (AP) Short on sleep, the Houston Astros finally stirred in the sixth inning Monday night when Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam to help beat the Miami Marlins 7-2.

The Astros arrived at their hotel at 5 a.m. after a doubleheader in New York against the Yankees, and were listless and hitless against Dan Straily until the fifth inning.

Josh Reddick doubled in the sixth off Junichi Tazawa (1-1), and after a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Gurriel connected with two outs for a 4-1 lead.

It was the Astros' second grand slam in two games. Alex Bregman hit one in Sunday night's win at Yankee Stadium.

Jose Altuve homered in the ninth and drove in three runs.

Joe Musgrove (3-3) allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings for the Astros (27-12), who climbed 15 games above .500 for the first time since 2005. They have the best record in the majors and are off to the best start in franchise history.

The Marlins went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and fell to 1-6 on their homestand.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 7, METS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Yasmany Tomas, Jeff Mathis and Daniel Descalso homered in a six-run eighth inning and Arizona handed struggling New York its fifth straight loss.

Jake Lamb also went deep for the Diamondbacks, the latest team to take advantage of a beleaguered Mets bullpen.

Tomas snapped a 1-all tie with a three-run homer off Hansel Robles (4-1). Mathis' two-run shot also came against Robles, hit hard for the second consecutive outing after a strong start to the season.

Jorge De La Rosa (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win.

                        INDIANS 8, RAYS 7

CLEVELAND (AP) - Indians starter Carlos Carrasco left early with an injury, but five relievers kept the lead and helped Cleveland hold off Tampa Bay.

Carrasco was pulled because of tightness in his left pectoral muscle after giving up an RBI single to Brad Miller. The right-hander allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings and left with Cleveland ahead 7-4.

Boone Logan (1-0) retired both batters he faced. Andrew Miller permitted his first run of the season in the eighth, and Cody Allen gave up a solo homer to Peter Bourjos in the ninth before earning his 10th save.

Lonnie Chisenhall hit a three-run homer in the first, when Cleveland scored five times off Chris Archer (3-2). Francisco Lindor added a solo shot in the eighth.

                        ANGELS 5, WHITE SOX 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout homered for the fourth consecutive game, helping Los Angeles top Chicago.

The Angels scored each of their runs via the long ball. Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer to right in the fifth inning and Trout followed with a drive to left. Martin Maldonado homered in the seventh inning.

Angels right-hander Jesse Chavez (3-5) pitched seven-plus innings and Bud Norris got four outs for his eighth save.

Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer for Chicago, and Tyler Saladino had an RBI triple. Mike Pelfrey (0-4) allowed four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                        GIANTS 8, DODGERS 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Eduardo Nunez was credited with a two-run infield single when Los Angeles pitcher Brandon McCarthy lost track of a baserunner and San Francisco beat the Dodgers for its season-high fourth straight win.

The hit by Nunez was the key play in a four-run fourth inning that broke the game open and helped Matt Cain (3-1) earn his second win of the season against the Dodgers.

San Francisco opened the inning with three straight hits off McCarthy (3-1), with an RBI double by Brandon Crawford putting the Giants up 2-1. That's when things really got interesting.

With runners on second and third, Nunez hit a broken-bat grounder up the middle that shortstop Corey Seager fielded just beyond the infield dirt. Buster Posey easily scored from third, and Brandon Crawford scored from second after Seager hurried the ball to McCarthy on the mound and McCarthy didn't realize Crawford was running.

                        BRAVES 10, BLUE JAYS 6

TORONTO (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit his 13th homer, Nick Markakis had three RBIs and Atlanta snapped Toronto's five-game winning streak.

Matt Kemp had four hits and scored three times for the Braves, who have won three of four.

Freeman matched Washington's Ryan Zimmerman and Milwaukee's Eric Thames atop the NL home run leaderboard with a three-run shot off Leonel Campos in a four-run sixth.

Freeman has connected against all 10 teams Atlanta has faced this season.

Bartolo Colon (2-4) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings to win for the first time since April 16.

Blue Jays right-hander Mike Bolsinger (0-2) gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. Toronto pitchers set a franchise record by hitting five batters.

                        MARINERS 6, ATHLETICS 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager each hit a two-run homer, and Yovani Gallardo pitched effectively into the seventh inning as Seattle made the most of four hits to hold off Oakland.

Oakland scored twice in the ninth, when closer Edwin Diaz walked four of the five batters he faced to force in a run. Tony Zych relieved, and the second run scored on Khris Davis' groundout. After an intentional walk to Yonder Alonso loaded the bases again, Zych struck out Adam Rosales looking on a 3-2 pitch for his first major league save.

Cruz's home run, his ninth, put Seattle up 4-0 in the second as the Mariners capitalized on five walks by Sean Manaea (1-3), activated earlier in the day off the disabled list.

Oakland pulled to 4-3 on a solo homer by Davis in the fourth and a two-run shot by Stephen Vogt in the fifth. Both came off Gallardo (2-3), who allowed three runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

                        PADRES 6, BREWERS 5, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer with no outs in the 10th inning to give San Diego a win over Milwaukee.

Renfroe's homer to left, his seventh, came off Oliver Drake (2-1) with Erick Aybar aboard on a leadoff single.

The Brewers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning on Eric Sogard's homer with one out against Jose Torres (2-2).

The Brewers tied it at 4 in the eighth. Hernan Perez's leadoff fly ball to shallow right off Brad Hand went for a triple when second baseman Cory Spangenberg and right fielder Renfroe both went for it and missed. Perez scored the tying run on Domingo Santana's RBI single to right with one out.

                            ***************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but………

                            13) Week 1 of the NFL season, ESPN has a Monday night doubleheader; this year, one of the announce teams that night will be Beth Mowins/Rex Ryan, an unusual pairing.

Mowins has done college football on ESPN for years; she is highly competent but she isn’t getting this gig because she is good, she is getting it because she’s a woman- that’s the world we live in now.

Look at the people ESPN fired this month; they’re working on evening out the demographics of their workforce.

This will be Ryan’s first-ever NFL game behind a microphone and he gets it in primetime, which is odd. If he is outspoken he should be good– he acted in an Adam Sandler movie couple years ago and was very good at it. Thing is, he has to be outspoken and not hold back on criticizing people he knows. We’ll see.

                            12) Someone on Twitter (a media professional) was critical of Kenny Albert getting national TV gigs, which is ridiculous, but again typical of the world we live in. If you prepare really well, set up your partner to look good and have no shtick, then some people won’t like you, because they care more about style than substance. Albert is everything a play-by-play guy should be.

                            11) For a good part of this weekend, the Cubs’ outfield was Kyle Schwarber, Javier Baez and Ian Happ, a catcher and two infielders. At some point, this will hurt you defensively.

                            10) Mets blew a 7-1 lead Sunday, lost 11-9 in Miller Park; Neil Walker’s baserunning didn’t help them any.

When the Mets were up big, they had a half-inning end on a first-to-second double play, when Walker was a runner on third base. He coasted towards the plate; had he sprinted, he would’ve scored before the third out was made on a tag at second base. But he didn’t, the run didn’t count and it turned out to be a run the Mets really needed later on.

                            9) Texas Rangers are 6-0 when AJ Griffin starts; they scored 52 runs in the six games.

                            8) Kyle Stanley birdied the 17th hole island green at the PLAYERS Championship all four days this past weekend, just the second person ever to do that (Paul Azinger).

                            7) Former big league catcher David Ross makes his ESPN analyst debut on Wednesday night’s Boston-St Louis game, with Jon Sciambi and Aaron Boone.

                            6) Duke landed PG recruit Trevon Duval, a 5-star recruit. He’ll be in college from Labor Day until the Blue Devils get KO’d from the NCAA tournament. Duke will be a very young team next season.

                            5) There are now 58 billionaires living in Los Angeles County; hope they all buy suites in the Rams’ new stadium.

                            4) To people who are complaining about Colin Kaepernick being a free agent, what about Jay Cutler? You don’t think Cutler is better than Kaepernick? If a team had shown interest in signing Cutler, no way would he be working on TV this fall.

                            3) New idea in marketing: Florists were running ads Monday to sell Mother’s Day stuff to people who forgot to send flowers/gifts on Sunday. Balloons with “I’m really sorry!!!” on them?

                            2) Toronto Blue Jays have 14 pitchers, 11 position players right now; that means they have only one bench player, other than the backup catcher. Nobody better get ejected.

                            1) Would Gregg Popovich make a good President? Our country needs someone who is respected by most everyone– there is too much hatred/divisiveness these days. We need someone who can do the right thing without a political agenda. Hard to find people like that nowadays.

                              • LEADING OFF: Keuchel tries for 7-0, Rangers go for 7 in row
                                May 15, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                HOUSTON, PROBLEM SOLVED

After taking a step back last season, Dallas Keuchel has regained the form that earned him an AL Cy Young Award in 2015, and he can become the majors' first seven-game winner when the Astros play at Miami. At a time when pitchers are throwing harder than ever before, Keuchel (6-0, 1.69 ERA) is dominating with a fastball averaging 89 mph. The bush-bearded lefty has the second highest groundball rate among qualified starters (64.4 percent) and has pitched at least seven innings in all but one of his eight starts.

                                RUSHING RANGERS

Yu Darvish starts for Texas, which has won six in a row and taken all five on this homestand with late rallies. The two-time AL West champion Rangers can reach .500 for the first time this season by beating Philadelphia, which has lost eight of 10. Darvish is 7-2 with a 2.26 ERA in 12 interleague starts.

                                BAD NEWS, BEARS

The sputtering Chicago Cubs try to get back on track when they host Cincinnati to open a 10-game homestand. The World Series champions have dropped seven of nine, including two of three at St. Louis to wrap their most recent road trip. After trailing only the Red Sox and Rockies in runs last season, Chicago ranks 13th in the majors this year. Meanwhile, starters Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and John Lackey all have higher ERAs this year than last. Lackey (3-3, 4.29) will get first crack at the Reds, opposing veteran Bronson Arroyo (3-2, 5.94).

                                THICKER SKIN?

Rich Hill and the Los Angeles Dodgers hope he's finally put his recurring blister problems behind him. After missing a month, the left-hander comes off the disabled list to start in San Francisco. Hill (1-1, 3.38 ERA) has totaled only eight innings in two major league starts this season, but recently tossed five hitless innings in a rehab outing for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. The last time he came off the DL in April, he re-aggravated the blister on his left middle finger and lasted only 54 pitches.

                                NOT AGAIN

Cleveland is hoping to get good news on Carlos Carrasco's status after the right-hander left a start Monday with tightness in his left pectoral muscle. The Indians are already missing Corey Kluber from the rotation. Carrasco sat out Cleveland's run to the World Series last fall because of a broken right hand after being hit by a line drive.

                                GOOD AS GREINKE

Zack Greinke (4-2, 2.79 ERA) tries to follow up an outstanding performance with another one when he starts for Arizona against the visiting New York Mets. Greinke took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning last Thursday before Gregory Polanco hit a leadoff homer for Pittsburgh. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked one in a 2-1 victory.

                                NAME GAME

There's been a fun meet-and-greet session this week at Progressive Field - Cleveland outfielder Daniel Robertson finally bumped into Daniel Robertson of the Rays. They grew up near each other in California, but had never met. The Indians' Robertson is 31 and played for the first time with his new team last weekend; Tampa Bay's Robertson is 23 and made his big league debut this year.
