        August 17, 2016

        Hottest team:
        Cubs (13-2 last 15)
The Cubs held the Brewers scoreless over the first 17 innings of Tuesday’s day-night doubleheader scoring before a sloppy Travis Wood came in and surrendered a Hernan Perez home run and Milwaukee brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Aroldis Chapman closed out both wins in the twinbill, so we’ll see if he’s available here, but considering how great the team’s starting pitching has been since the All-Star break, not having their closer on call may not matter. Even spot starter Trevor Cahill pitched five scoreless frames in Game 1 yesterday, while the typical rotation of Jake Arrieta, Jason Hammel, Kyle Hendricks, John Lackey and Jon Lester is a combined 9-0 in August with a 1.08 ERA, giving up 12 runs in 91.2 innings. The Cubs haven’t lost any of the five games Lester (12-4, 2.93 ERA) has taken the ball in since the All-Star break, but his worst start came against these Brewers, who chased him out after four innings on July 24, scoring four runs and making him throw 100 pitches while issuing a season-high five walks. Chicago bailed him out by rallying to win that game with a five-run seventh inning and is 7-3 against Milwaukee this season. The teams will play eight more games against one another after this one. Jimmy Nelson (6-12, 4.07) has pitched great against the Cubs this season but is 0-2 despite a 1.53 ERA over three starts in which his offense got him a total of six runs. He’s 0-5 in his career against Chicago (-260), which is Wednesday's biggest 'chalk' and has opened up a five-game lead on Washington for baseball's best record

        Coldest team:
Padres (0-4 last four, 2-7 last nine)
Since the Angels rallied past Seattle to snap their 11-game losing streak late Tuesday, we'll give them a break from this spot where they have deservingly taken up residence over the past week. The Padres are wrapping up a taxing nine-game road trip that has seen them go 2-6 against the Pirates, Mets and Rays. San Diego looks weary and ready to head back West, but will look to avoid being swept by a sizzling Tampa Bay offense that has scored 35 runs over its last three games, its highest total within that stretch in franchise history. Christian Friedrich (4-8, 4.84) will look to cool off the Rays, but hasn't won a decision since June 23 and has allowed at least three runs in nine of his last 10 starts. Despite its awful record, San Diego has only been swept twice since June began, and one of those was a two-game series. Tampa is heavily favored (-200) despite riding MLB loss leader Chris Archer (6-16, 4.39), who has won just two of his last 11 decisions.

        Hottest pitcher: J.A. Happ (16-3, 2.96 ERA)
There are a few other deserving candidates, but no one has a better case for the AL’s Cy Young Award than the 33-year-old Happ, who came into the season with a 62-61 career record that obviously looks a lot better now. Toronto has lost only one of his last 14 starts, a span in which he’s gone 11-1. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of those outings, allowing a total of six earned runs over his last 43.1 innings. Happ is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA against the Yankees, so after erasing a 6-1 deficit with an impressive comeback, you can understand why the Blue Jays (-155) are a sizeable road favorite in the Bronx as they aim to win a series outright for the sixth time in seven tries. The UNDER is 12-4 in Toronto’s last 16 games and 4-1-1 over Happ’s last six outings. New York counters with fellow lefty CC Sabathia (7-9, 4.20), who is 0-2 against the Jays despite a 1.38 ERA over 13 innings. He got a single run of support in each of his May starts against Toronto.

        Coldest pitcher:
        Anibal Sanchez (6-12, 6.31 ERA)
Detroit’s veteran Venezuelan starter opened August by surrendering a single run in his first two starts, but slipped up again last time out at Texas in statistically his worst outing of the season, surrendering eight runs on eight hits, four of them homers, over four innings of an 8-5 loss in Arlington. Sanchez has already lost his spot in the rotation once, so he might be pitching for the right to stay here. The Tigers have won in only one of his 12 starts this season. It doesn’t help matters that Kansas City has limited Detroit to a single run in each of the first two games of this series, which means the Tigers have now scored two or fewer runs in six of their last nine, going 2-7 in those contests and falling 3.5 games off the AL wild card pace. Royals starter Yordano Ventura (8-9, 4.60) is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA this month and 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA over 18.1 innings against the Tigers this season, improving to 6-0 lifetime against his team’s division rival. Despite those numbers, Detroit (-120) is slightly favored to avoid a series sweep.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (28-7 last 35)
After breaking through for seven runs in the final three innings of Sunday's riveting 8-7 comeback win at San Francisco, Baltimore was back home for its first home game since Aug. 4 looking to continue to build positive momentum after a lengthy rough road stretch. Instead of enjoying the comforts of home, the Orioles had to watch as Mookie Betts became first visiting player in MLB history to hit as many as seven home runs in Baltimore in a single season, a streak that dates back to 1954. Betts hit two homers, driving in all five runs in a 5-3 win that drew the Red Sox even with the Orioles for the two AL wild card spots, one game behind Toronto in the AL East. Despite Betts' fireworks, the Birds still haven't seen an OVER come in at Camden Yards since July 8, a run that includes the weekend prior to the All-Star break and spans 12 games following Tuesday's result. Dylan Bundy (6-3, 2.93) has seen the UNDER prevail in five of his last six starts, but David Price (10-8, 4.29) may snap that run since the OVER is 4-1 in his last five. Boston's key offseason acquisition is looking for wins in consecutive starts for the first time since May 24. Tonight's total is expected to hover around 9.

        Biggest OVER run:
        Phillies (10-0 last 10, 12-1 last 13)
The Phillies had their four-game winning streak snapped, but fans still got their cheers in as they gave Chase Utley standing ovations following his two home runs, the second a grand slam, in the Dodgers’ 15-5 win on Tuesday. The Phillies have still seen only one UNDER come in this entire month. Only one of Philadelphia’s last eight games at Citizens Bank Park has gone UNDER the posted total, a run that dates back to July 21. The OVER also went 6-for-6 on their West Coast stops in San Diego and L.A., with games against the Dodgers producing an average of 13.3 combined runs through the first four meetings. The Dodgers have seen the OVER hit in seven of their last eight games. Lefty Scott Kazmir (9-6, 4.44) has lost his last three starts after having won seven straight decisions, a run that existed since mid-May until it was snapped on July 30. The OVER is 5-1 in his last six starts and 2-0 in rookie Jake Thompson’s (1-1, 8.68) outings. Oddsmakers have set tonight’s total at 9.

        Matchup to watch:
        A's at Rangers
Rougned Odor had a brutal game last night before delivering the game-winning RBI by getting hit by a pitch in the Rangers’ 5-4 win. Odor contributed to Sam Dyson’s blown save with poor defense as the A’s rallied in the ninth, then went ahead 4-2 against Keone Kela in the 10th. It was the type of meltdown that can haunt a team, especially one that had just been blanked twice at home this past weekend and got four of its five runs on Monday in a single inning. Texas managed just two runs entering the ninth, but was going to escape with a win before things went downhill for the second baseman. Odor wound up laughing last after getting plunked, and the Rangers found a way out of a loss that could’ve festered. Carlos Beltran went 4-for-5 and delivered the game-tying hit in extras. Yu Darvish (3-3, 2.77) has pitched great of late and will look to secure a winning homestand with a sweep of Oakland before hitting the road for series against last-place Tampa Bay and Cincinnati. Darvish, who turned 30 on Tuesday, has struggled throughout his career against the A's, coming in 1-8 with a 4.76 ERA. Texas is the only team in the AL atop the 70-win mark. Only the Cubs are a heavier favorite on Wednesday than the Rangers (-210), who run up against A’s rookie lefty Sean Manaea (4-7, 4.57). The under has prevailed in Texas’ last four games and is 13-3-1 over the last 17.

        Betcha didn’t know:
James Paxton landing on the disabled list will lead to Seattle riding with another arm set to make their first start for its team on Wednesday. Cody Martin (1-2, 2.70), a 26-year-old who was a First Team All-American at Gonzaga, will become the 13th pitcher to start a game for the Mariners and is part of a team-record 29-man contingent to throw for Seattle already this season. Martin made two starts with the A's last year, giving up 11 earned runs over six innings in taking two losses and being demoted to bullpen duty. Martin has made five relief appearances for the M's but has made 18 starts at Triple-A Tacoma, where he’s gone 9-7 with a 3.93 ERA. Arquimedes Caminero blew a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth in Anaheim Tuesday to end a three-game winning streak, but the Mariners have survived all the attrition in their rotation enough to have won 11 of 14. Seattle has lost consecutive games only twice since the All-Star break, a run that dates back to July 7. The Angels have only won back-to-back games once since July 26 but will be favored behind lefty Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 4.37).

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-165) at Phillies

        Biggest public underdog:
        Royals (+110) at Tigers

Biggest line move: Astros (-110 to -120) vs. Cardinals

                  August 18, 2016

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Adrian Gonzalez hit two home runs and had five RBIs and the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their NL West lead with a 7-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.

Justin Turner also homered and Joc Pederson reached base four times for the first-place Dodgers, who moved 1 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco. On Tuesday, Los Angeles took over sole possession of the division lead for the first time since May 10.

With the Dodgers trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Gonzalez lined a 3-1 fastball into the seats in right-center field for a three-run homer. Turner singled and Josh Reddick walked to lead off the inning.

Gonzalez followed that up with a two-run homer in the seventh after Corey Seager led off the inning with a double. It was the first baseman's first multi-homer game of the season and the 20th of his career. Gonzalez, who has 12 homers, extended his hitting streak to 10 games and is 18 for 40 in that span.

Turner hit his 22nd home run after Seager singled in the fifth, pushing the Dodgers ahead 5-1.

Scott Kazmir (10-6) allowed eight hits and two earned runs in five-plus innings.

Jake Thompson (1-2) was the loser.

                  PIRATES 6, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, Matt Joyce had a key two-run single and Pittsburgh overcame a four-run deficit against San Francisco to complete a three-game sweep.

The Pirates won their fourth straight game and sixth in seven. They remained a game behind St. Louis in the race for the NL wild card.

The Giants, who on Tuesday fell out of first place in the NL West for the first time in 97 days, lost their fourth straight. They dropped to 9-21, the worst record in the majors since the All-Star break.

McCutchen's homer, his 17th, capped a six-run rally in the fifth inning that chased Giants starter Matt Cain (4-8). Jeff Locke (9-7) pitched a scoreless fifth. Tony Watson survived a scoreless ninth after the Giants loaded the bases with no outs for his seventh save since taking over as the closer.

                  CUBS 6, BREWERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jorge Soler hit a three-run homer during a five-run first inning, Jon Lester pitched into the seventh and Chicago beat Milwaukee for its 17th victory 20 games.

Soler's shot capped the inning after RBI singles by Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell.

Lester (13-4) got his fourth straight victory, giving up one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven. David Ross added a solo home run in the third inning for the Cubs, who won their third straight following a doubleheader sweep of the Brewers on Tuesday.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson (6-13) walked leadoff batter Dexter Fowler then hit Kris Bryant with a pitch to begin the first. Soler's homer on a 2-2 pitch was a convincing smash that landed just under the videoboard atop of the left-center field stands.

                  BLUE JAYS 7, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ won his 11th consecutive decision to become the first 17-game winner, Melvin Upton Jr. hit a three-run homer and Toronto beat New York.

Darwin Barney had an early two-run double, and Russell Martin added three hits, including an RBI single off CC Sabathia. The AL East-leading Blue Jays took two of three in the series, delighting a vocal contingent of Toronto fans at Yankee Stadium.

Happ (17-3) pitched into the eighth extended the longest active winning streak in the big leagues. He struck out nine, walked one and yielded solo homers to Gary Sanchez, Starlin Castro and Chase Headley.

Signed as a free agent in the offseason to a $36 million, three-year contract, Happ has won five straight starts. The 33-year-old lefty is 3-0 in four outings against the Yankees this year.

Happ was lifted after Headley's infield single with one out in the eighth. Joaquin Benoit gave up an RBI single to rookie Aaron Judge that made it 7-4, and Roberto Osuna struck out Didi Gregorius on a 97 mph fastball with two on to end the inning. Osuna got four straight outs for his 27th save.

                  DIAMONDBACKS 13, METS 5

PHOENIX (AP) - Yasmany Tomas and Rickie Weeks Jr. each homered twice and drove in a combined 11 runs, leading Arizona past New York.

Tomas set a career high for RBIs in a game with six and logged his major league-leading seventh multi-homer game of the season. Weeks tied a career high with five RBIs and had his first multi-homer game in more than three years, the eighth of his career.

Tomas has eight home runs in 10 games and has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 starts, with 23 RBIs over that span. His solo shot in the fourth gave Arizona a 3-1 lead, right after Weeks' first home run, then he added a two-run triple in the seventh and three-run homer in the eighth.

Zack Godley (4-2) earned the win with 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball. Jon Niese (8-7) took the loss.

                  CARDINALS 8, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Carlos Martinez took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and Jeremy Hazelbaker and Brandon Moss homered in St. Louis' victory over Houston.

The Cardinals have won four straight and have a slim hold on the second NL wild-card spot.

Martinez (11-7) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing a run and striking out seven. He retired 15 of the first 16 batters before giving up a leadoff double to Teoscar Hernandez in the sixth.

Doug Fister (11-8) allowed four runs in four innings for the Astros. Houston has been outscored 29-11 during a four-game losing streak and surrendered eight or more runs in three straight games for the first time this season.

                  WHITE SOX 10, INDIANS 7

CLEVELAND (AP) - Adam Eaton's ninth-inning grand slam off closer Cody Allen capped a five-run rally and lifted Chicago past Cleveland.

Cleveland was two outs from increasing its AL Central lead over second-place Detroit to seven games, but the White Sox rallied to break a seven-game losing streak against the Indians.

Allen (2-5) retired the first hitter, but Chicago loaded the bases on infield singles by Todd Frazier and J.B. Shuck, and a walk to Tim Anderson.

Dioner Navarro's bloop hit down the left field line scored a run before Eaton homered to right on an 0-2 pitch for his first career grand slam.

Jacob Turner (1-1) pitched the eighth, and David Robertson retired the final two hitters with two on in the ninth for his 30th save.

                  RED SOX 8, ORIOLES 1, 6 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - David Price allowed four hits before a rainstorm stopped play for good after six innings, and Boston beat Baltimore for its sixth straight victory.

Jackie Bradley Jr. homered and drove in four runs for the Red Sox. They swept the two-game series to climb past the Orioles into second place in the AL East.

Baltimore had been in first or second place since opening day. The Orioles' 39-19 home record is the best in the AL, but they are 2-4 against Boston at Camden Yards.

Price (11-8) was cruising until a driving storm stopped play. The game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 17 minutes. Baltimore rookie Dylan Bundy (6-4) was the loser.

Sandy Leon hit a two-run shot in the fifth.

                  ROYALS 4, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Kansas City past

                  Detroit for a three-game sweep.

Hosmer broke up Anibal Sanchez's no-hit bid with a double in the seventh inning after spoiling his perfect game with a walk in the fifth.

Sanchez threw seven shutout innings after allowing eight runs in four innings in his previous start. He struck out six and walked two Wednesday.

In the ninth, Shane Greene (2-3) allowed a one-out single to Lorenzo Cain before Hosmer's line drive into the right-field stands. Drew Butera added an RBI single.

Matt Strahm (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his sixth save.

                  RANGERS 6, ATHLETICS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish struck out nine and Texas beat Oakland, giving the right-hander his first victory in his last 11 starts against the Athletics.

Darvish (4-3) had a demonstrative show of emotion, pumping his fist and letting out a shout, after striking out Coco Crisp to end the seventh inning. Darvish came back for the eighth, but was pulled after Danny Valencia's leadoff double.

Crisp struck out three times after homering on the second pitch of the game. Jake Smolinski went deep leading off the fifth for the only other run off Darvish.

All-Star center fielder Ian Desmond and recently acquired Jonathan Lucroy each had three RBIs to help the AL-best Rangers complete a three-game series sweep.

Sean Manaea (4-8) was the loser.

                  ROCKIES 12, NATIONALS 10

DENVER (AP) - D.J. LeMahieu kept tormenting Washington with two hits, Gerardo Parra drove in four runs and Colorado beat Stephen Strasburg.

Tony Wolters homered and had three hits, and Charlie Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

LeMahieu singled in his first at-bat to stretch his on-base streak to 10 plate appearances, the fourth longest in club history. The streak stopped when he struck out to end the seven-run first inning.

Strasburg (15-4) had the shortest outing of the season at 1 2/3 innings. The first six batters reached against Strasburg, Colorado sent 11 to the plate in the first and eight in the second to take a 9-2 lead.

Boone Logan (2-2) struck out Daniel Murphy and Bryce Harper to end the eighth before Scott Oberg allowed a solo home run to Chris Heisey before closing it out for his first save.

                  REDS 3, MARLINS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Phillips drove in two runs with his second double of the game and Cincinnati rallied to beat Miami.

Billy Hamilton was on second base and Joey Votto on first after being walked intentionally in the seventh inning when Phillips lined a pitch from Nick Wittgen (3-2) to the gap in right-center field to drive in the go-ahead runs.

Josh Smith (2-1) set up the comeback with two innings of scoreless relief after the Marlins took a 2-1 lead on third baseman Eugenio Suarez's two-out error of Marcell Ozuna's routine grounder in the fifth. That allowed Christian Yelich to score from second.

Blake Wood pitched a perfect eighth, and Tony Cingrani worked the ninth for his 15th save.

                  RAYS 2, PADRES 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Chris Archer struck out nine in 7 1/3 innings, Brad Miller homered again and Tampa Bay beat San Diego to complete a three-game sweep.

Archer (7-16) allowed four hits and a walk. He's at risk of becoming the majors' first 20-game loser since Detroit's Mike Maroth (21) in 2003, but also leads the AL with 186 strikeouts.

Miller hit his 25h homer in the first inning after going deep twice in a 15-1 rout Tuesday night.

Alex Colome got the final four outs for his 28th save.

Christian Friedrich (4-9) was the loser. The Padres have lost five straight and eight of 10.

                  TWINS 10, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Kyle Gibson threw his first nine-inning complete game and Minnesota overcame two hits from Dansby Swanson in his big league debut to beat Atlanta.

Juan Centeno drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth, and Minnesota swept the two-game series between the major leagues' worst teams.

The Braves showed why they're five games worse than the Twins, dropping to 18-41 at home despite Swanson's strong debut in his hometown.

Gibson (5-7) began the night with a 7.98 ERA in three starts this month. Eric O'Flaherty (1-4) gave up three runs over one inning for Atlanta.

                    — Get well soon to Arizona Cardinal coach Bruce Arians; he was hospitalized in San Diego this week with stomach pains.

                    — St Louis Cardinals pinch-hitters have 13 HRs this year; the big league record is 14.

                    — Cardinals are 10-7 in interleague play this year, 7-3 on road, 0-7 at home.

                    — Findlay Prep (Las Vegas) hoop coach Andy Johnson quits to become an assistant coach at Southern Utah. Interesting career move.

                    — Who would’ve thought that two of the best pitchers in baseball this year would be JA Happ and Danny Duffy?

                    — How would you like to own the LA Clippers, pay DeAndre Jordan $66M over the next three years, then hear him say an Olympic gold medal is bigger than an NBA title? Oy.

Thursday’s List of 13: Random NFL knowledge

                    13) San Diego’s Antonio Gates has scored the most touchdowns (104) of any active player.

                    12) 52 defensive backs were taken in last April’s draft, most of any position, followed by 36 linebackers, 32 receivers. Only 15 quarterbacks were taken.

                    11) Ohio State (12) had the most players drafted, followed by Clemson (9) and UCLA (8). SEC had 51 players taken, followed by Big 14 (47) and the Pac-12 (32).

                    10) Baltimore Ravens threw 21 INTs LY, had only six themselves; hard to win many games with a -14 turnover ratio like the Ravens had.

                    9) Last Buffalo Bills head coach with a winning record: Wade Phillips, who went 29-21 from 1998-2000. Bills last made the playoffs in 1999.

                    8) From 1992-2002, Cincinnati Bengals went 52-124; Marvin Lewis cleaned that mess up and is 112-101-2 as Bengals’ coach. Problem is, he is 0-7 in playoff games and the natives are restless, forgetting how dreadful things were before Lewis came to Cincinnati.

                    7) Miami Dolphins do not have a road game in October; they visit Cincinnati Sept 29, then have 3 straight home games, a bye, and then another home game before they visit San Diego Nov 13. Weird schedule.

                    6) Oakland Raiders have had nine head coaches since 2002; none of them won more than 17 games.

                    5) Pittsburgh Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969; think about that incredible continuity they’ve had.

                    4) San Diego Chargers were 4-12 LY; they scored 30+ points in all four wins, were 0-12 when scoring less than 30 points.

                    3) 63-year old Bobby April is Tennessee’s special teams coach; Titans are his 9th NFL team. I met Coach April at the Hall of Fame game in 2001 when he worked for the Rams– good guy.

                    2) Football coaches are nomads: John Fox is the Bears’ head coach. Here is a chronology of his first nine years as a football coach:

                    1978– San Diego State
1979– US International (also in San Diego)
                    1980– Boise State
                    1981– Long Beach State
                    1982– Utah
                    1983– Kansas
                    1984– Iowa State
1985– LA Express of the USFL
1986– Pitt Panthers. The man must’ve been an expert at packing.

1– Don Coryell went 42-29-1 as Cardinals’ coach, from 1973-77. The next nine Cardinal coaches combined to go 216-343, before they hired 60-year old Bruce Arians, who has gone 35-16 in three years with the Redbirds. How on God’s green earth did Arians not get an NFL head coaching job until he was 60? He was a head coach at Temple, but still…….

                            • LEADING OFF: Yanks have new catcher, Bumgarner vs deGrom
                              August 17, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                              NOT GEORGE'S YANKS

The Yankees are a changin', and that continued Tuesday when team owner Hal Steinbrenner said rookie catcher Gary Sanchez was taking over full-time responsibilities from veteran Brian McCann. Sanchez is hitting .360 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 53 plate appearances, and McCann called him a ''future All-Star'' in graciously acknowledging the shifting roles. Steinbrenner said he had to ''overcome a little bit of DNA issues'' to usher in New York's recent youth movement - his dad was George Steinbrenner, after all - but thinks Yankees fans are ready to embrace the Baby Bombers .

                              MARQUEE MATCHUP

Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (11-7, 2.11) will pitch the series opener against Jacob deGrom (7-5, 2.30) and the Mets. The All-Star Bumgarner threw seven shutout innings against Baltimore in his most recent outing to snap a streak of five winless starts in which he was 0-3 and the Giants were 0-5. DeGrom is 1-0 with an 0.65 ERA in his past four starts.

                              MARINERS SALE

Major League Baseball owners were set to vote on the proposed sale of a controlling stake in the Seattle Mariners from Nintendo of America to a group of minority owners led by John Stanton. As part of the sale, Stanton will take over as control person from current chairman Howard Lincoln, who is retiring. The agreement was announced in April and approval is expected. The sale could close this week.

                              LA STELLA BACK TO BASEBALL

Tommy La Stella is back in the fold with the Chicago Cubs and is expected to return to the majors next month. La Stella reported to Double-A Tennessee after refusing a minor league assignment in July and returning home to contemplate his career. La Stella, who was hitting .295 in 51 games with the Cubs this season, could be back with the Cubs by Sept. 1, said manager Joe Maddon.

                              BEATING THE BRAVES

Nationals rookie Reynaldo Lopez (1-1, 5.74) faces the Braves after delivering seven innings of one-run ball against Atlanta on Saturday. It will be Lopez's fourth big league start, and his first two went poorly before he pitched well in the 7-6 win against the Braves.
