LEADING OFF: Porcello perfect at Fenway, Lackey vs Cards

HISTORY AT FENWAY?

Right-hander Rick Porcello looks to become the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a season 12-0 at Fenway Park in a series finale against Arizona. Porcello (15-3, 3.40 ERA) is 11-0 in his 12 home starts. Righty Dave ''Boo'' Ferriss is the last Boston hurler to win his first 12 decisions in Fenway, finishing 13-0 at home when he went 25-6 overall with three saves in 1946. Right-hander Zack Greinke (11-3, 3.67) goes for the Diamondbacks. He's 8-0 with a 2.47 ERA in his last 10 starts.

HELLO OLD FRIEND

Cubs right-hander John Lackey (9-7, 3.56) makes his fourth start against the Cardinals in a primetime game at Wrigley Field. Lackey, who pitched for St. Louis the previous two seasons, is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA against his former team this year, although the Cards are 2-1 in those games. Righty Mike Leake (8-9, 4.79) signed an $80 million, five-year deal with St. Louis shortly after Lackey left in free agency. He has a 9.00 ERA in his past four starts.

SKIPPING JOSE

The Marlins will skip ace Jose Fernandez's scheduled turn to keep him on pace for his 180-inning limit this season. Instead, righty Tom Koehler will start against White Sox left-hander Chris Sale (14-5, 3.16). In his past four starts, Koehler is 3-0 with an ERA of 0.67, and Miami manager Don Mattingly called him ''our best pitcher since the All-Star break.'' Sale is 0-3 in his past five games and hasn't won since his suspension for cutting up the team's throwback jerseys on July 23.

SIXTH CHANCE AT 10

Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer (9-3, 2.43), the AL rookie leader in wins, tries again for his 10th victory. The series finale at Texas will be Fulmer's sixth start since his ninth win July 6 at Cleveland. Fulmer gave up only two runs over seven innings in a loss Monday at Seattle after no-decisions in his previous four games - all Detroit victories. During a 10-start stretch from May 21-July 17, Fulmer was 7-1 with a 0.83 ERA.

BOSTON (AP) Mookie Betts hit three home runs and drove in a career-best eight runs, joining Hall of Famer Ted Williams as the only Red Sox players in over 100 years with a pair of three-homer games in a season and powering Boston over the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-2 on Sunday.

Betts matched David Ortiz for the club lead with 26 homers.

Dustin Pedroia had five hits and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer for Boston.

Rick Porcello (16-3) became the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a season 12-0 at Fenway Park as Boston completed a three-game sweep of Arizona.

Zack Greinke (11-4) was chased in the second inning.

Betts had two chances to hit a record-tying fourth homer, but lined out to right and then grounded out in the eighth. The crowd chanted `Let's Go Mookie!' before his final at-bat. Betts' other three-homer game came against Baltimore on May 31.

Michael Bourn homered for Arizona.

CARDINALS 6, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Stephen Piscotty hit a three-run homer, Brandon Moss had solo shot one out later and St. Louis used a five-run eighth inning to beat Chicago.

Piscotty hit his 17th homer off setup man Hector Rondon (2-3), who entered with a 3-1 lead in his first appearance since Aug. 2 following a triceps injury. After pinch-hitter Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia singled, Piscotty lofted a shot to deep left-center field that put the Cardinals ahead 4-3.

Moss added his 21st homer, then Randal Grichuk doubled in a run off Travis Wood.

The Cardinals split a four-game series with major league-leading Chicago. The Cubs have lost two straight following an 11-game winning streak.

Matt Bowman (2-4) got three outs in the seventh in relief of Mike Leake for the win. Seung Hwan Oh got the final five outs, including three strikeouts in the ninth, for his 11th save.

PIRATES 11, DODGERS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Josh Harrison and Adam Frazier each had four hits, Sean Rodriguez homered and had four RBIs and Pittsburgh spoiled Brett Anderson's return for Los Angeles with a five-run first inning.

Rodriguez had a three-run homer and Jordy Mercer a two-run shot in the first to chase Anderson (0-1) from his first start since last October. Anderson returned from back surgery and left after one inning with a mild left wrist sprain.

Jung Ho Kang added a solo homer during a four-run ninth to help Pittsburgh win for the fifth time in seven games against the Dodgers this season. Rookie Chad Kuhl (3-0) won his third consecutive start, holding the Dodgers to two runs and six hits over six innings.

Joc Pederson hit his second homer in two games for the Dodgers. They have lost three of their last four, but remain one game back of San Francisco in the NL West.

ORIOLES 8, GIANTS 7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning and Baltimore overcame a six-run deficit to hand struggling San Francisco another deflating loss.

Matt Wieters tripled and had a career-best five hits to help the Orioles win for the third time in four games. Baltimore trails Toronto by a half-game in the AL East.

Schoop homered off Santiago Casilla (2-4) with two outs after Manny Machado singled and Mark Trumbo walked. Baltimore trailed 7-1 after six innings, but got two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Brad Brach (7-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Baltimore.

The Giants led the NL West by 6 1/2 games at the All-Star break but have gone 9-18 since.

METS 5, PADRES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Steven Matz carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and New York won consecutive games for the first time in more than a month, beating San Diego.

Alexei Ramirez slapped a one-out single over first base on Matz's 105th and final pitch in 96-degree heat. Wilmer Flores and Neil Walker homered for the Mets.

Struggling to stay close in the wild-card race, the defending NL champions (59-58) hadn't strung together two wins since July 6-7 against Miami and Washington.

Matz (9-8) won for only the second time in nine decisions over his past 14 starts. The rookie left-hander, a hometown favorite who grew up about 50 miles from Citi Field, struck out eight and walked two.

The only Mets pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Johan Santana in June 2012 against St. Louis.

Flores and Walker connected for solo shots off Clayton Richard (0-2).

RAYS 12, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Corey Dickerson hit a three-run homer off Luis Severino, Evan Longoria added a three-run double against Luis Cessa to cap a six-run fourth inning and Tampa Bay past New York Yankees, which started eight players 26 years old or younger for the first time in 49 years.

Longoria had an RBI double in the first and singled in the seventh, finishing the three-game series 7 for 11 with six RBIs. His 74 hits and 47 RBIs top visiting players at new Yankee Stadium.

Logan Forsythe hit a second-inning solo shot and Dickerson's homer, which stopped a 0-for-17 slide, put the Rays ahead 5-1. Nick Franklin had a three-run homer off Cessa in a four-run seventh.

Jake Odorizzi (7-5) won his fourth straight decision, allowing five hits in six innings. He held the Yankees hitless for 6 1/3 innings on May 29 and led 1-0, then allowed Starlin Castro's two-run homer.

On another hot and steamy afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Baby Bombers Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez hit home runs. Judge became only the second player to homer for the Yankees in his first two big league games, lining an opposite-field drive over the right-field scoreboard to join Joe Lefebvre (May 1980).

Severino (1-8) allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 9, ASTROS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki and Russell Martin hit back-to-back home runs, Marcus Stroman pitched 6 1-3 innings to win for the first time in four starts and Toronto beat Houston.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 33rd home run, a solo blast off Luke Gregerson, to help the AL East-leading Blue Jays won for the eighth time in 10 meetings with the Astros. Encarnacion and Baltimore's Mark Trumbo are tied for the most in the majors.

Tulowitzki went 3 for 4 with three RBIs. He hit an RBI single in the first, singled and scored in the fourth, and homered in the fifth, his 20th. Martin followed with a first-pitch blast off Mike Fiers (8-6). It was the seventh time this season Toronto has hit consecutive home runs.

Stroman (9-5) allowed two runs - one earned - and five hits.

Jason Castro homnered for the Astros. American League batting leader Jose Altuve went 0 for 4 and failed to reach safely for the first time in 44 road games.

NATIONALS 9, BRAVES 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper hit an RBI double in his return to the lineup, Tanner Roark won his fourth straight start and Washington topped Atlanta.

Anthony Rendon homered and drove in four runs. Chris Heisey added a solo home run.

Harper had missed five straight games with a neck injury. The reigning NL MVP was set to sit out another, too, and wasn't in the original lineup - the Nationals issued a revised lineup 90 minutes before the scheduled start and Harper was in right field.

Harper doubled in the first inning, finished 1 for 3 with a walk and scored twice, a day after general manager Mike Rizzo said results of an MRI on Harper's neck came back ''clean.''

Roark (13-6) allowed one run over seven innings, while the Nationals tagged Braves starter Tyrell Jenkins (2-3).

INDIANS 5, ANGELS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Abraham Almonte singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Cleveland sent Los Angeles to its 10th straight loss, 5-4 Sunday.

The AL Central-leading Indians completed a four-game sweep. The Angels went 0-9 on their trip and are mired in their worst skid since an 11-game losing streak in 1999.

Angels slugger Albert Pujols was ejected by plate umpire Clint Fagan after being called out on strikes in the eighth. Mike Trout was given the day off, ending his consecutive games played streak at 178.

Trevor Bauer (9-5) gave up home runs to Ji-Man Choi and Geovany Soto, but got through six innings for his second straight win. Andrew Miller pitched two scoreless innings while Cody Allen worked the ninth for his 22nd save. Jered Weaver (8-10) allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Jason Kipnis hit his 20th homer for Cleveland.

TIGERS 7, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Michael Fulmer pitched a four-hitter in Detroit's second straight shutout of Texas, and Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez homered for the Tigers.

Fulmer (10-3) became the first Detroit rookie to throw a shutout since Justin Verlander 10 years ago. The 23-year-old right-hander retired 16 of the last 17 hitters he faced as the Tigers kept the AL West-leading Rangers scoreless over the final 21 innings of the three-game series.

Ian Kinsler added a solo shot against A.J. Griffin (5-2) after striking out his first three times against the Texas right-hander. Miguel Cabrera hit his team-leading 27th homer in the ninth.

Victor Martinez started the scoring with a two-run shot in the fourth, and J.D. Martinez hit his 100th career homer to knock out Griffin and give the Tigers a 6-0 lead in the seventh.

PHILLIES 7, ROCKIES 6

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jimmy Paredes singled, doubled, homered and drove in three runs and Philadelphia held on to complete a three-game sweep of Colorado.

Cesar Hernandez extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a fourth-inning walk and had an RBI single. The Phillies have won four straight games.

Charlie Blackmon homered twice and doubled for the Rockies. Blackmon finished the series with five home runs, and he is batting .548 with eight homers and 14 RBIs in his last nine games. The Rockies have lost three in a row and seven of eight.

Jeanmar Gomez gave up two runs but got Gerardo Parra to pop out to center for the final out with the tying run on third base for his 31st save in 34 chances.

Severino Gonzalez (1-2) gave up one run on two hits in two innings in relief of starter Adam Morgan, who was injured in the fourth inning. Tyler Chatwood (10-8) was the loser.

MARINERS 8, ATHLETICS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kyle Seager doubled twice and drove in four runs to help Seattle beat Oakland for its eighth victory in nine games.

Adam Lind homered, Nori Aoki had three singles and Shawn O'Malley added two hits and scored twice. The Mariners moved within 5 1/2 games of AL West-leading Texas.

Wade LeBlanc (2-0) gave up three runs over six innings to earn his second win since being acquired from Toronto in June. Zach Neal (2-2) was the loser.

Oakland's Khris Davis hit his third home run in three days. He became the first A's player with at least 30 homers since Brandon Moss hit 30 in 2013. Ryon Healy and Brett Eibner also homered for the A's.

BREWERS 7, REDS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun hit two homers, doubled and drove in six runs Sunday in Milwaukee's victory over Cincinnati.

Braun hit a two-run double in the first inning, a three-run homer in the second and his 22nd home run in the fourth. It was Braun's fourth multihomer game of the season and the 26th of his career. He is hitting .381 (32 for 84) with nine home runs and 21 RBIs in 23 games since the All-Star break.

Joey Votto homered, doubled and drove in all three Reds runs.

Wily Peralta (5-8) allowed one run on four hits over six innings to earn his first win since June 11.

Rookie Cody Reed (0-7) was tagged for six runs on five hits and three walks before being pulled after Braun's home run in the second. Braun homered later off reliever Keyvius Sampson.

ROYALS 11, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Paulo Orlando and Lorenzo Cain each had four hits and three RBIs and Kansas City Royals won a road series for the first time since late June, beating Minnesota.

Orlando homered, tripled and scored three times. Cain matched his career high for hits in a game.

Edinson Volquez (9-10) threw six solid innings to snap his five-game winless streak. Chris Young pitched three scoreless innings for his first save.

Orlando hit a three-run homer off Hector Santiago (10-7) in the fourth, capping a six-run inning. Orlando is hitting .368 (39 for 106) since the All-Star break.

Brian Dozier hit his 26th home run for Minnesota.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend


13) They put 89,000 fans in the LA Coliseum Saturday night, as the NFL returned to Los Angeles for first time in 22 years. Great atmosphere for a game in August; hopefully it’ll carry thru the whole season.

12) Wouldn’t bother me if the Rams let Jared Goff “red-shirt” this year, just let him learn the NFL from the sidelines and in practice, the way QBs used to be developed. When Jeff Fisher coached Steve McNair in Tennessee, McNair started only six games his first two years. People aren’t that patient these days and that’s too bad.

11) Cowboys struck gold with 4th round pick Dak Prescott, who started 37 games for Mississippi State. Makes me wonder; Prescott got nailed for a DUI just before the draft, a huge red flag, but Dallas took him anyway.

Then last month, just before camp, the whole DUI thing just goes away. There was no evidence he failed a breathalyzer test. Makes you wonder if Dallas staged the whole event to make sure they could draft Prescott with a lower draft pick. They wouldn’t do something like that, would they?

I mean, they took Dez Bryant after Bryant was ineligible his whole senior year at Oklahoma State. Hmmmm…..

10) My advice to you would be not to wager on NFL preseason games; why bet on a game when the coaches don’t really care if they win or lose? That said, I’ll have some preseason trends in this space later this week, since people love to bet on football, even if preseason action is a bad idea.

9) Umpire Eric Cooper tossed Colorado pitcher Tyler Anderson out of the game Saturday night after he hit Mikael Franco with a pitch in the 4th inning. No warnings had been issued; the pitch hit Franco below the knee, but Franco had homered in his previous at-bat, so Cooper over-reacted and tossed Colorado’s best pitcher.

8) You have to wonder about the Olympic basketball team; Draymond Green sits at end of the bench, Carmelo Anthony is the anointed “star” of the team, then people complain about the team’s defense.

France was 36-54 (66.7%) inside the arc yesterday. Oy.

7) USA 100, France 97–Tony Parker didn’t play Sunday; why? Saving his legs for a game the coach thinks they can win? Guess what, they could’ve won this game. Curious strategy.

6) Zach Greinke has allowed 7+ runs in three of his 19 starts for Arizona. In 92 starts for the Dodgers, that never happened.

5) Giancarlo Stanton is out for the year, with a groin injury. This was Stanton’s 7th year in big leagues- he has played more than 123 games twice, knocked in more than 87 runs once– he always gets hurt. Maybe he is too muscular; I don’t know enough about it, but maybe a little less weight training and more flexibility- its not the damn NFL.

Anyway, if I was on the hook for $30M a year with Giancarlo, I’d be a little worried. Seems like a terrific person, but very much an overrated hitter. 500-foot homers count the same as 405-footers. He had a terrific year defensively in right field this year, but that’s not what he gets paid for. He gets paid to drive in runs; can’t do that on the DL.

4) Kevin Durant played 30:00 in each of the last two Olympic games and took a total of ten shots from the floor. How is this smart? When was the last time Durant took only 10 shots in a 2-game stretch?

3) Melvin Gordon might be a good fantasy pick this year at RB; Chargers finished 30th/31st in rushing yards last two years- they want to get more balance this season, figure to have less shotgun formations to help run the ball better.

2) Dustin Kerns posted this on Twitter: the Carolina Panthers’ roster has players from 63 different colleges- NFL players come from all over, not just the SEC and Pac-12.

Weeping Joe Girardi shaken by Alex Rodriguez's exit

NEW YORK (AP) Joe Girardi was weeping, his voice cracking.

After weeks of benching Alex Rodriguez for what Girardi thought was the good of the team, the New York manager was able to insert A-Rod at third base for the start of his final inning with the Yankees.

Modern major league managers strive to maintain inscrutable expressions, breaking character primarily for tantrums aimed at umpires. But after Friday night's finale, tears streamed from Girardi's eyes.

''Some people think that I wanted to make negative decisions, but that's not the case. I have a huge heart,'' Girardi said.

''If this is the last time he plays,'' Girardi continued softly, pausing for 10 seconds and sniffling as his eyes teared and he nearly sobbed, ''I wanted it to be something he never forgot.''

Derek Jeter referred to Joe Torre, his manager from 1996-2007, as Mr. T.

Girardi, who replaced Torre, wasn't called Mr. G by Rodriguez, but the two seemed tied as never before as A-Rod's time in pinstripes shriveled toward extinction.

During the postgame news conferences, Girardi was more broken up than Rodriguez. He repeatedly had to stop speaking to gather his emotions.

''I know how much he loves this game and I know how much he loves working,'' Girardi said. ''He's a workaholic, maybe sometimes to a detriment, where he wears himself out a little bit. But I know how much he loves putting on that uniform. I know how much he loves competing. I know how much he loves to play the game, and that's probably why this week was so tough for me, because that's what I want in a player, and me and Alex have been through a lot together, and I have really strong feelings for him.''

Following Rodriguez's season-long drug suspension in 2014, Girardi enthusiastically started him at designated hitter for all of 2015, and Rodriguez responded with his best season since 2010. But his production dropped during the season's final two months and did not improve in the first half of this season.

A-Rod lost his DH job against right-handed pitchers at the start of July and then was laid off against lefties three weeks later. Friday night's start was just his third since July 22.

When Rodriguez said Sunday he would play his Yankees swan song five days later, Girardi said he would try to get A-Rod into every game he wanted. But Girardi denied him starts in two of three games at Boston, and then rejected Rodriguez's request to open Friday at third, A-Rod's office from 2004-13.

''I was quite angry about the strain. I was angry about it because I didn't feel that it needed to happen,'' Girardi said. ''I'm going to miss him. I'm going to miss this guy. This guy did a lot of great things. I got to see a lot of neat things, and he helped us win a lot of games, and people that I really appreciate in life are the people that really have a passion for what they do, and he's got that. So, yeah, I know that sometimes I backed him and maybe people thought `what are you doing?' But I know how much he loves this game and I feel for him that he's not going out a champion, he's not going out on a 30-home run season.''

Rodriguez thanked Girardi for moving him to third in the ninth inning, giving Yankees fans an opportunity to cheer A-Rod when he ran onto the field and again when he was replaced one batter later by rookie Ronald Torreyes.

''I have the utmost respect for Joe, and I've always been one of his guys,'' Rodriguez said. ''There's a lot of trust there. This week was incredibly awkward and tough, and I was disappointed like I said before the game, but we are a family, and families sometimes disagree. So in the long-term, Joe and I are going to be just fine.''

Rodriguez didn't want to assess his place in history, leaving that task to others.

''I'm someone who loves the game tremendously and have made some tremendous mistakes,'' he said. ''I've also worked extremely hard at trying to come back and do things the right way and mend all type of relationships and was extremely uncomfortable making some of the phone calls that I had to make. But if you look at the 22 years, to have this type of ending the last two years, is what I'm most proud of and is what I'm most going to remember.''

Despite Rodriguez's transgressions, Girardi told his son Dante to study A-Rod.

''None of us are immune to bad decisions,'' the manager said. ''The big part about that is you own up to your mistakes and you correct the mistakes that you make and in life. And he has worked really hard at that, a number of times, to try to get back and do the right thing.

''Watch him hit. Watch him swing. Watch what he does. His mechanics are really, really good,'' Girardi recalled telling his son. ''You want complete players, and he was a complete player for a long, long time. And this guy was a great defender. He was a great runner. He knew how to play the game. He knew how to make adjustments. He knew how to hit for average, power, everything.''

LEADING OFF: Angels try to end 10-game skid, Marlins-A-Rod?

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

FALLEN ANGELS

The Angels have dropped 10 in a row, their worst losing streak since an 11-game skid in 1999. Back home from an 0-9 road trip, Ricky Nolasco and Los Angeles face a tough opponent: Felix Hernandez and the Mariners, who have won eight of nine.

APPROACHING ALEX

The Marlins need a bat, now that slugger Giancarlo Stanton is expected to miss at least six weeks because of a strained groin. Could Alex Rodriguez be on deck? Team president of baseball operations Michael Hill says Miami is discussing whether to reach out to A-Rod. The 41-year-old star was cut by the Yankees on Saturday, a day after playing his final game in pinstripes.

ROADIES

The Red Sox begin an 11-game, four-city road trip with a one-day stop in Cleveland to make up a rainout. NL All-Star Drew Pomeranz (0-2, 5.26 ERA) looks for his first win with Boston, opposed by Josh Tomlin (11-4, 4.18). The Red Sox plan to put knuckleballer Steven Wright on the disabled list and first baseman Hanley Ramirez on the bereavement list.

KNOCK THE KNUCKLER

Yankees newcomers Aaron Judge, Tyler Austin and Gary Sanchez have all hit well since making their major league debuts. They'll get a new challenge as they try to tame the knuckleball of R.A. Dickey when the AL East-leading Blue Jays visit Yankee Stadium.

NEED MOORE

Newly acquired Matt Moore will make his home debut for San Francisco, taking on the Pirates. The lefty is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts since the Giants got him from Tampa Bay.

TRY AGAIN

Bartolo Colon has beaten every team in the majors except the Diamondbacks. The 43-year-old righty gets another chance when he starts for the Mets at Arizona. He got a no-decision vs. the D-backs last Wednesday, pitching seven effective innings.

Royals, Mets may not make playoffs to defend pennants
August 15, 2016

The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals opened the season against each other back in April in a rematch from last year's World Series.

It's been mostly downhill from there.

Beset by injuries and a general sense of malaise, the Royals and Mets would both miss the playoffs if the season ended now. Kansas City (57-60) is 7 + games behind the second wild card in the AL, and the Mets (59-58) are 2 + back in the NL.

The last time both pennant winners from the previous season failed to make the playoffs was in 2007, when the Tigers and Cardinals fell short. The last time both finished below .500 was in 1994 (Blue Jays and Phillies) - and in a non-strike year the last time was 1986 (Royals and Cardinals).

While the Royals are facing an uphill climb, the Mets are still in the thick of the race for a wild card, but it's been an ugly August for New York, which now trails St. Louis, Miami and Pittsburgh in the postseason race.

With Matt Harvey, Yoenis Cespedes, David Wright and Lucas Duda all on the disabled list, New York's lineup looks nothing like it did during the run through last year's postseason.

The Royals can relate, with Mike Moustakas and Wade Davis both currently on the DL. Kansas City also had to deal with earlier injuries to Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain.

The Mets did get Jose Reyes back from the DL over the weekend, and Cespedes is expected back soon.

''We're scratching and clawing right now, but we know that there's some reinforcements on the way,'' second baseman Neil Walker said.

Here are a few other developments from around baseball:

SECOND WIND

The Chicago Cubs are back on pace for over 100 wins after an 11-game winning streak that lasted until Saturday. The Cubs had a 5-15 stretch shortly before the All-Star break, which took some of the luster off their terrific start - but after this recent surge, Chicago is 12 games ahead of second-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

RUNNING AWAY

The Cleveland Indians have stolen an AL-best 95 bases this season, which is nine more than they had all of last year. The Indians are also stealing at an 81-percent clip. Rajai Davis (31 for 35), Jose Ramirez (18 for 23), Francisco Lindor (15 for 20) and Jason Kipnis (11 for 14) are all threats on the bases.

Cleveland tied a team record with eight steals Friday night in a win over the Los Angeles Angels.

FANTASY FOCUS

Alex Rodriguez's departure from the New York Yankees doesn't change much from a fantasy perspective - he wasn't playing a lot anyway. But if the youth movement is underway now, it certainly looked promising Saturday, when New York's Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge each homered in his first major league at-bat - in back-to-back plate appearances.

Judge is the more highly touted prospect - he was ranked No. 42 on Baseball America's midseason list and No. 18 by Baseball Prospectus at the beginning of the season. But it's hard to ignore what Austin did at Triple-A this year, hitting .323 with 13 homers in only 57 games.

LINE OF THE WEEK

Brandon Crawford had seven hits in San Francisco's 14-inning win over Miami on Monday. Crawford became the first major leaguer with seven hits in a game since Pittsburgh's Rennie Stennett in 1975. Remarkably, Crawford only scored one run Monday despite all those times on base. The next three hitters in the batting order were a combined 2 for 15, and the pitcher's spot was next after them.

Honorable mention goes to the three-homer games by Colorado's Charlie Blackmon and Boston's Mookie Betts later in the week.

Minnesota Massacre

An incredible offensive display in July by the Minnesota Twins has given way to repeated pitching meltdowns as we reach the middle of August. The Twins dropped an 11-4 decision to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday for their fifth loss in the past six games; they’ve surrendered a whopping 53 runs over that stretch, the main contributor to their 5-1 O/U mark in that span. The Twins are easily the top over team in baseball (72-40-6) heading into a six-game road swing against hosts Atlanta and Kansas City.

Breaking Even

Speaking of the Royals, they’re back to being the closest break-even bet in baseball following Sunday’s one-sided win over Minnesota. The defending World Series champions are a +2 in units won through 117 games, slightly ahead of the San Diego Padres (+6). Kansas City has been one of the safest bets at home (36-21), but has been positively abysmal away from Kauffman Stadium (21-39). The Royals will look to improve that wretched road mark as they open a three-game set Tuesday in Detroit.

Marlins Malaise

The Miami Marlins face an uphill climb in their quest to reach the National League postseason.
