ATLANTA (AP) Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians won their 11th straight game, beating the Atlanta Braves 5-3 Tuesday night.

Corey Kluber (8-7) allowed three hits in eight innings as the Indians extended their best streak since an 11-game string in 1982.

Santana's single off Arodys Vizcaino (1-3) made it 3-2.

          CUBS 7, REDS 2, 15 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Kris Bryant singled home the tiebreaking run in the 15th inning and Chicago manager Joe Maddon used three pitchers in left field while beating Cincinnati.

With the Cubs out of position players, relievers Travis Wood and Spencer Patton (1-0) alternated between left field and the mound in the 14th. Wood then finished it off with reliever Pedro Strop in left.

A day after hitting three home runs and two doubles, Bryant had an RBI single off J.J. Hoover (1-2). Javier Baez added a grand slam later in the inning.

          NATIONALS 5, METS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lucas Giolito threw four scoreless innings in his rain-shortened major league debut to help Washington.

Baseball's top pitching prospect allowed just one hit. The 21-year-old struck out one and walked two before a lengthy rain delay ended his outing.

          Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer, his team-leading 16th.

Oliver Perez (2-1) won in relief. Former New York ace Matt Harvey (4-10) took the loss.

          ATHLTEICS 13, GIANTS 11

          SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Jake Smolinski hit a go-ahead, three-run homer during Oakland's five-run eighth inning.

The A's overcame a pair of three-run deficits to win their second straight game in the Bay Bridge Series and cap their best road trip in nearly three years.

Khris Davis hit his 19th homer, and Stephen Vogt, Billy Butler and Josh Phegley each drove in two runs to help the A's finish a 5-1 trip that started with three wins in four games against the Angels.

Zach Neal (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning for his first major league win. Javier Lopez (0-2) allowed Smolinski's drive.

          PHILLIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona ace Zack Greinke left after two innings with tightness in his oblique muscle and Philadelphia rallied with two runs in the ninth inning.

Maikel Franco homered for the Phillies.

Brad Ziegler (2-3) has blown two of his last three save chances after converting 43 in a row.

Hector Neris (2-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the victory as the Phillies won a series for the first time in 13 tries. Jeanmar Gomez tossed a perfect ninth for his 21st save.

          ASTROS 7, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Correa hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Tim Lincecum, sending Houston toward its ninth win in 10 games.

Correa went 3 for 4 and matched his career high with four RBIs. The Astros beat the Angels for the seventh straight time.

Lincecum (1-2) couldn't get through the fifth inning in his third start for Los Angeles, yielding seven hits, four walks and five runs. It was his second straight bumpy outing after a promising debut.

Scott Feldman (5-3) yielded three hits in five innings.

          ORIOLES 11, PADRES 7

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Adam Jones hit a leadoff homer against his hometown team and Hyun Soo Kim and Chris Davis also homered for Baltimore in its sixth straight victory.

The Orioles lead the majors with 123 homers, including 54 in June.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7) beat the Padres in consecutive starts, giving up a run and three hits in five innings. Erik Johnson (0-4) allowed four runs in five innings.

          MARINERS 5, PIRATES 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit his 20th home run of the season and Robinson Cano had three hits for Seattle.

Cruz became the only current player with at least 20 home runs in every season since 2009. David Ortiz and Brian McCann can also reach that mark this season.

Hisashi Iwakuma (7-6) took a shutout into the seventh inning before giving up a pair of runs.

Jonathon Niese (6-6) got the loss.

          RANGERS 7, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Cole Hamels breezed through seven shutout innings to win his fourth consecutive start, Adrian Beltre homered and drove in three runs, and Texas kept rolling.

The Rangers have won four in a row and 12 of 14 overall, and eight straight on the road.

Hamels (9-1) yielded six singles and struck out seven in outpitching CC Sabathia (5-5).

Yankees slugger Carlos Beltran left in the first with a tight right hamstring. He had an MRI that was ''clean'' and is day to day, manager Joe Girardi said.

          DODGERS 6, BREWERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Teen lefty Julio Urias posted his first big league win as Los Angeles held off Milwaukee.

Urias (1-2) gave up two hits and walked six in six innings. The 19-year-old rookie left with a 6-2 lead, and Kenley Jansen got his 23rd save.

Chase Anderson (4-8) took the loss.

Dodger center fielder Joc Pederson crashed face first into the wall after catching Chris Carter's sacrifice fly in the eighth. Pederson crumpled onto the warning track and, after several minutes, walked off holding his chest.

          RED SOX 8, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Travis Shaw homered, doubled, singled and drove in five runs as Boston ended a three-game losing streak.

Rick Porcello (9-2) gave up one run in six innings.

Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer (4-11) has gone from being an All-Star a year ago to leading the major leagues in losses this season.

          CARDINALS 8, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Matt Carpenter homered and St. Louis finished with a two-game split in Kansas City. The intrastate series now shifts to Busch Stadium for two games.

Michael Wacha (4-7) allowed four runs over six innings. Yordano Ventura (6-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter in 5 1/3 innings.

Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain grabbed his left hamstring while trying to beat out an infield hit in the seventh. He exited and the extent of the injury was unclear.

          TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Brian Dozier homered twice and drove in four runs to lead Minnesota.

It was the ninth straight game with an extra-base hit for Dozier, the longest streak for the franchise since it moved to Minnesota in 1961.

The Twins beat Chicago for the first time in seven tries. Kyle Gibson (1-5) pitched seven innings of five-hit ball.

Dozier pulled both homers off Jose Quintana (5-8).

          TIGERS 7, MARLINS 5

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera's three-run homer highlighted a seven-run fifth inning that boosted Detroit.

Jose Iglesias and Nick Castellanos also homered during the big inning, which came after Adam Conley (4-5) had been dominant through four.

Mike Pelfrey (2-7) allowed four runs and 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer for Miami.

          • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- I had two Nathan's hot dogs for lunch yesterday; how does anyone eat 60 of those things in ten minutes, like they do in that hot dog eating contest July 4?

-- Lucas Giolito threw four shutout innings in his MLB debut as Washington shut out the Mets, 5-0. Giolito had his outing shortened by a 5th-inning rain delay.

-- Giolito's grandfather had a recurring role in Seinfeld (Susan's father).

-- Padres' CF Jon Jay has a broken arm, is out 4-6 weeks.

-- Clayton Kershaw is flying back to LA today to get his sore back checked out.

-- Lebron James opted out of his $24M contract for next year, so he will be a free agent again on Friday, though he says he intends to stay in Cleveland.

            **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

            13) Baseball has to change the rain delay rule; Texas-New York sat thru a 3:35 rain delay (thats three hours, 35 minutes) with the game resuming around 2:15am Tuesday in bottom of the 9th inning. First game of a series, it should have been suspended and then finished before Tuesday's game. Common sense just ain't that common.

            12) Kirby Yates became the first pitcher to hit three batters in the ninth inning of a game since Ray Boggs of the Braves on September 17, 1928.

Aroldis Chapman threw nine pitches in the rain before the game was delayed, so they didn't ask him to finish the game after the lengthy delay. So they lost.

            11) According to ESPN's Fran Fraschilla, who knows stuff about basketball, over the last 15 years, if you take the top 100 high school basketball players each year, so thats 1,500 kids, only 27% of them have made the NBA.

            10) There were conflicting reports this week that the New Orleans Saints may or may not move their training camp from Greenbrier, WV to Metairie, LA because of all the flooding in the West Virginia area. Nick Faldo owns a home at Greenbrier, which is a very fancy resort area, tucked away in the hills.

            9) Angels' pitchers Garrett Richards/Andrew Heaney both have elbow injuries, but instead of having Tommy John surgery, they're getting stem cell injections to try and heal the injury without surgery, which would reduce recovery time from a year to 12 weeks or so. If this works, it'll revolutionize how teams treat pitchers.

            8) Tennis star/model/PED cheater Maria Sharapova is spending part of her suspension attending Harvard Business School, making her by far, the best looking Ivy League nitwit. Imagine being a college professor and having her come in during office hours for extra help?

            7) A new business recently opened near my house-- Beer Universe, which claims to sell over 1,000 different types of beer. Last business that building housed was a place that sold clothes/toys for newborn babies and little kids.

I had no idea there were over 1,000 kinds of beer, but a relative of mine owns part of Evil Genius beer, which may or may not be named after Vince McMahon.

            6) Milwaukee Brewer TV guys told an interesting story Sunday about how umpire supervisor Bruce Froemming "had a talk" with them about criticizing umpires on the air. Brian Anderson/Bill Schroeder made light of the meeting, but they made sure it got out over the air, which means they probably weren't real happy about it.

Those two are good natured and not controversial; seems like anytime anyone tells the truth on local baseball telecasts, either the players or umps get ticked off.

            5) Rams-Giants play in England October 23, if England still exists by then; I notice yesterday that the game starts at 9:30 ET, which is not good. When is a guy supposed to sleep? College games will be on until around 2am the night before-- I feel bad for the ticket writers in Las Vegas sportsbooks-- thats a 6:30am kickoff in the desert.

            4) Denver Broncos' public address announcer quit after 16 years, to be the PA announcer for the Vikings-- apparently the guy grew up in Minnesota.

            3) Brewers' pitcher Jimmy Nelson left Sunday's game after five innings, having not allowed a hit, but once Washington got a hit, the scorer changed an earlier ruling and gave Washington hit on an earlier play, a hard-hit ball at the second baseman.

I was an official scorer in the Eastern League 30 years ago; the first thing they told me was "The first hit has to clearly be a hit", which clearly fits this situation, but that was so frustrating. Either it is or isn't a hit; lot of politics in official scoring, and that was before fantasy baseball, where thousands of people might have a financial stake in how a play is scored, one way or the other.

            2) This bears repeating; Kris Bryant is the first player EVER to hit three homers and two doubles in the same game. Wow.

            1) MLB and the players' union needs to compromise for the good of the game; do away with the DH and go with 27-man rosters. With David Ortiz retiring, this would be a good time to get rid of the DH. Trading the DH for 60 (or 64, after expansion) extra jobs should appeal to the players' union. Common sense rarely wins out.

                  • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                    June 29, 2016

Hottest team: Indians (11-0 past 11)

The Cleveland Indians remain on a roll, winning their 11th consecutive game Tuesday night in Atlanta. It's their longest winning streak since 1982. They will look to keep the good times rolling Wednesday with Danny Salazar on the bump. Salazar has the second-lowest ERA in the American League at 2.40, and he will be opposed by Braves RHP Joel De La Rosa who is making his major league debut. De La Cruz had an underwhelming 4.68 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 57 2/3 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett, so the Indians will be heavy favorites to rack up their 12th straight victory.

Coldest team: Reds (3-10 past 13)

The Cincinnati Reds have certainly given the first-place Chicago Cubs fits in the first two games of this series, knocking around RHP Jake Arrierta while holding their own against LHP Jon Lester. Not only are the Reds ice cold over their past 13 games, they have the worst run differential in the majors at minus-123. Cincinnati has dropped six of their past seven games at Great American Ball Parkl, and they're just 11-29 in their past 40 against National League Central Division foes. Cincinnati is also just 5-12 in their past 17 home games against right-handed starting pitching.

                    Hottest pitcher:
Carlos Martinez, Cardinals (7-5, 3.02 ERA)

Martinez has heated up over the past month, going 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA over his past five starts with a .184 opponent batting average and 0.91 WHIP. The Cardinals have managed to win just three of Martinez's past 10 starts, and they're 1-5 in his past six outings at home. However, the Cardinals are 4-1 in their past five against right-handed starting pitching and they are 21-7 in the past 28 starts by Martinez when he spins a quality start in his most recent appearance. He did just that in Seattle last time out, holding the Mariners bats at bay. The Royals have won just one of the past six meetings between these Interstate 70 rivals, so that bodes well for Martinez.

                    Coldest pitcher
: James Shields, White Sox (2-9, 6.22 ERA)

'Big Game' James hasn't looked like a major league caliber pitcher this season, stumbling to an awful 2-9 record, 6.22 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. Shields has looked like he is pitching batting practice since being acquired from the San Diego Padres, going 0-2 with a 15.80 ERA and amazingly poor 3.07 WHIP in four outings over 13 2/3 innings. The White Sox added Shields' arm for a run at a postseason spot, but his addition has actually hindered their chances at the playoffs way more than it has helped.

                    Biggest UNDER run:
                    Mariners (7-3 past 10)

The under connected in Tuesday's interleague series opener against the Pirates, hitting for the seventh time in the past 10 games. The under is also 5-1-1 in Seattle's past seven home games against a right-handed starter, while going 8-3-1 in their past 12 games overall vs. RHP. And for what it's worth, in the past 10 meetings between these interleague teams the under has hit in nine of those outings. The under is also 5-1 in the past six meetings at Safeco Field, including Tuesday's opener.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (6-0 past six)

The Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants looked like they were playing slow-pitch softball in Tuesday's game at AT&T Park, with the A's scratching out a 13-11 win. They managed to tap the plate 21 times in the two games across the bay, and now they'll host the Giants at O.co for two. The A's have managed at least six runs in five straight games, averaging 7.9 runs per game in the past six while allowing 5.4 runs per outing. The A's have a patchwork rotation with several injuries, and Giants RHP Jake Peavy has a 5.22 ERA. Wednesday's game looks good for the A's to continue their over run.

                    Matchup to watch
                    : Athletics vs. Giants

The San Francisco Giants dropped a pair against the Oakland Athletics at home, now they look for revenge across the bay. The Giants are facing Athletics LHP Sean Manaea (2-4, 6.02 ERA, 1.44 WHIP) in Wednesday's game, and he is coming off the 15-day disabled list and could show rust. The Giants are 11-2 in their past 13 games against left-handed starting pitching, they're 21-5 in their past 26 games againts a starter with a WHIP over 1.30, and they're 22-7 in their past 29 road games against a team with a losing record. One thing to give bettors pause is the fact the Giants are just 4-12 in their past 16 trips to Oakland.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
The Rangers have won 40 of their past 54 games played on a grass surface, and they're 20-8 in their past 28 games following a win. On the flip side, the Yankees are just 2-5 in their past seven home games against a right-handed starter. And while the Yankees have won six of their past seven home outings by Masahiro Tanaka, they are just 1-5 in Tanaka's past six starts against a team with a winning overall record. The Yankees are also 0-5 in their past five home games against the Rangers, and 0-4 in the past four meetings overall.

                    Biggest public favorite:
                    Nationals (-155) vs. Mets

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+180) at Yankees

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (-150 to -175) vs. Phillies

                    • LEADING OFF: Kershaw sees doc, Matz has bone spur
                      June 29, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                      BARKING BACK

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is returning to Los Angeles for tests on a sore lower back that's been bothering him for weeks. Kershaw may still make his next scheduled start Friday night against Colorado despite dealing on and off with the discomfort. Kershaw has been on the disabled list only once in his nine-year career, in early 2014 with a shoulder strain. ''It's been a few weeks where it's been in and out, and he's so good, it kind of started barking a little bit, so I think that right now we just want to kind of get some answers,'' manager Dave Roberts said.

                      PITCHING THROUGH PAIN

Steven Matz had his scheduled start pushed to Thursday to get extra rest after being diagnosed with a bone spur in his pitching elbow. The young Mets lefty will continue pitching through the bone spur because doctors have assured the team he cannot do damage to it. ''He's going to have to deal with it because it's not going away,'' manager Terry Collins said Tuesday. Matz had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in 2009 shortly after being drafted.

                      WORKING HARD

The Indians go for their 12th straight win and Danny Salazar (9-3, 2.40) takes a five-game winning streak into a game at Atlanta. Cleveland's streak is its longest in 34 years and two shy of tying the franchise mark, and now it's in the hands of Salazar, who has been dominant, but not necessarily efficient. He is second in the AL in ERA behind Boston's Steven Wright, but he has also thrown the second-most pitches per plate appearance in the league with 4.17.

                      ROLLING IN ST. LOUIS

Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (7-5, 3.02) tries to keep up a dominant stretch when St. Louis hosts Kansas City. Martinez is 3-0 with a 1.24 ERA over his past five starts, though he most recently got a no decision after seven strong innings in a 4-3 loss to Seattle. The Royals counter with Edinson Volquez (7-7, 5.15).

                      FAST TRACK

Right-hander Brock Stewart makes his major league debut for the Dodgers against Milwaukee after opening this season with Class A Rancho Cucamonga. The 2014 sixth-round pick rocketed to the majors with a 1.47 ERA in 14 starts between Class A, Double-A and Triple-A this season. Stewart was an infielder at Illinois State who rarely pitched before being drafted, but he needed just 221 1/3 minor league innings before getting the call. His quick transition to the mound may have been helped by the fact that his dad, Jeff, is a scout with the Rays.

Wednesday's MLB Game of the Day: Royals at Cardinals
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs in Tuesday's 8-4 victory for St. Louis, which is 15-21 on the season at home.

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals (A: +150, H: -180, Total: 8.0)

After earning a split on the road against their intrastate rival, the St. Louis Cardinals return home to host the reigning World Series champion Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night in the back end of the home-and-home four-game series. It's the opener of a nine-game homestand for St. Louis, which has dropped five in a row at Busch Stadium.

Matt Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in a pair of runs in Tuesday's 8-4 victory for St. Louis, which is 15-21 on the season at home. Kansas City has lost five of seven overall and may have suffered a costly injury when center fielder Lorenzo Cain was forced to leave Tuesday's game with a left hamstring strain. “We don’t know what’s wrong with Cain yet. We’re hoping the best," Royals left fielder Alex Gordon said. "If he goes down, we got a guy that can step in with (Jarrod) Dyson." Kansas City sends right-hander Edinson Volquez, who was ejected from Tuesday's contest, to the mound to oppose red-hot Carlos Martinez.

                                INJURY REPORT:

Royals - CF L. Cain (Questionable Wednesday, hamstring).

Cardinals - SS A. Diaz (Out Wednesday, face), RP J. Walden (15-Day DL, shoulder).

WEATHER REPORT: It should be beautiful baseball weather for phase two of the I-70 series. Partly cloudy skies, low humidity, and temperatures in the mid-80's will welcome the two teams to St. Louis. There will be a slight breeze (5 mph) blowing in from center field, but it certainly won't impact the play on the field at all.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Edinson Vólquez (7-7, 5.15 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martínez (7-5, 3.02)

Volquez has nowhere to go but up after a wretched performance versus Houston on Saturday, when he was hammered for 12 runs (11 earned) and failed to retire a batter in the second inning. Volquez managed to come away with a win despite giving up five runs to Detroit in his previous turn following seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball against Cleveland on June 13. Matt Holliday is 11-for-34 with two homers off Volquez, who is 5-6 lifetime against St. Louis.

Martinez has had a season of streaks, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in his first four starts before losing his next five outings and giving up at least four runs in four of them. He has reclaimed his early-season form during a five-start unbeaten streak in which he has yielded a total of five runs and pitched at least seven innings four times. The 24-year-old Martinez has struggled at Busch Stadium, posting a 3-4 record and 4.21 ERA in eight starts.

                                TRENDS:

                                * Royals are 1-10 in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
                                * Royals are 1-7 in Volquez' last 8 road starts vs. a team with a winning record.
                                * Cardinals are 2-8 in their last 10 interleague games.
                                * Cardinals are 1-5 in Martinez' last 6 home starts.
                                * Over is 8-1 in Royals last 9 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
                                * Under is 5-1-4 in the last 10 meetings.
                                * Road team is 4-0 in Blakney's last 4 games behind home plate.

CONSENSUS: As the I-70 series shifts to St. Louis, so does the public opinion - 70 percent of users are on the Cards tonight. The Over is picking up 58 percent of the totals wagers.
