    June 16, 2016

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (33-32) at NEW YORK METS (35-29)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:10 p.m. ET
    Sportsbook.ag Line: Pittsburgh +117, New York -127, Total: 7.5

Pittsburgh comes to New York to play the rubber match of a three game set Thursday night.

The Mets are looking to build off of their 11-2 victory last night, and win the series versus the Pirates. New York got production up and down the lineup, as seven Mets had multi-hit nights. They did get bad news today, finding out that veteran 3B David Wright (.226, 7 HR, 14 RBI) will need to undergo surgery on his neck that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is coming into the game on a cold streak. The team is 1-6 in its past seven games, though the one win came against the Mets in the first game of the series on Tuesday. Even though the Pirates are struggling as of late, they 13-5 versus the Mets over the past three seasons and 3-2 in this year’s season series.

Tonight’s pitching matchup will feature Pittsburgh’s RHP Juan Nicasio (5-5, 5.34 ERA, 60 K) versus New York’s 43-year old RHP Bartolo Colon (5-3, 3.08, 48 K). Its worth noting that over the last three starts for each pitcher, the games went UNDER with a combined record of 5-1.

Pittsburgh’s struggles of late have come from the team’s inability to hit. Over the last month, the Pirates are only hitting .219 as a team and are ranked 28th in runs-scored (48). The lack of hitting is hurting the team more than it might hurt other teams because hitting has been the aspect of the Pirates’ game that has been an asset all season. Even with this rough patch, over the entire season they are ninth in the league in runs-scored (306) and fifth in batting average as a team (.269).

The only hitter on the team that has consistently put up hits is OF Starling Marte (.332, 6 HR, 25 RBI), who is hitting .362 with two HRs and six RBIs this month. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Marte’s status is in question for the game tonight after leaving last night’s game with an eye injury.

Pittsburgh will hope to get production out of 3B David Freese (.298, 5 HR, 24 RBI), who has gone 2-for-3 against Colon in his career.

The Pirates’ starter tonight, Juan Nicasio, has been inconsistent all season. In his last three starts, he is 1-1 with a 4.59 ERA. Those statistics include his last outing, which was against the Mets where he pitched well, lasting five innings and only allowed one run. This game follows the trend of him pitching well against the Mets going 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his career. Nicasio was used in an unconventional way his last time on the mound because he came out of the bullpen in the 12th inning of a game where the starter only threw two innings and the entire bullpen had to be used. This experiment coming out of the bullpen didn’t go well; he allowed six runs on four hits and earned a loss in just one inning of work. Pittsburgh will hope that this one bad inning won’t hurt his confidence and carry over into tonight’s game.

The Mets will have Bartolo Colon on the mound tonight and he is on a roll as of late. Over his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA and the team has won two out of the three games. In fact, Colon has not allowed more than two runs in any of his starts since May 18th.

Bartolo has pitched well in his career against Pittsburgh, going 4-2 with a 1.88 ERA. His last start versus Pittsburgh was in August of last year and he earned a loss, but only gave up one run. The key for the Mets to win games is good pitching. Their entire staff has an impressive 3.12 ERA, which ranks 2nd in the league.

The Mets’ pitchers have had to do it all because they don’t get much run-support, having the 28th ranked offense in runs-scored (240). The Mets will look to CF Yoenis Cespedes (.286, 16 HR, 40 RBI) to have a big night, building off of his 3-for-4 night on Wednesday. They will also look to 3B Wilmer Flores (.250, 2 HR, 9 RBI) to stay hot since he has been hitting .375 with one HR and seven RBIs this month.

      • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Cavaliers 115, Warriors 101-- First time since 1966 that a team down 3-1 in Finals forced a Game 7.

-- Last time a road team won Game 7 in NBA Fials; Washington Bullets at Seattle Supersonics, way back in 1978.

-- 12 different American Presidents have been in office since Vin Scully has been calling Dodger games.

-- Tigers 10, Royals 4-- Victor Martinez missed last three games with a bad knee, but hit three solo home runs in this game.

-- Whit Merrifield has scored in Royals' last ten home games.

-- A's AAA farm team in Nashville drew10,092 fans Thursday night; no way the A's drew that many fans for their listless loss to Texas Thursday afternoon. Announced crowd was 14,236, which is science fiction.

        **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

        13) 19 of Cleveland Cavaliers' last 21 games were decided by 11+ points.

        12) LSU rookie Ben Simmons declined to work out for the 76ers? No idea what this means, but I doubt it is a positive sign. Maybe it is nothing, maybe he is angling to be a LA Laker, but red flags are increasingly popping up around the Australian rookie.

        11) Bob Davidson has been a major league umpire for 30+ years and he isn't a crew chief? What does this say about him? Davidson did the plate in Cubs-Nationals game Wednesday; by end of the game, both sidies were livid with his ball/strike calls.

        10) City of Philadelphia put a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on soda, making it the biggest city in America to do so (Berkeley had been). So my 20-ounce Cherry Coke goes up 30 cents a bottle, but God forbid someone on the Terror Watch List not be allowed to buy an assault weapon. Politicians are scum.

        9) Oakland A's pulled a fast one on their competitors when they signed Yoenis Cespedes to a 4-year, $36M deal in 2012; they went 256-175 and made playoffs all three years Cespedes played for them. Since they traded him? 117-167.

        8) Pittsburgh Pirates have had a brutal travel schedule the last couple weeks; they played at Citi Field last night and have a day game in Chicago today. This is wrong; if you have a day game, your getaway day game also should be a day game.

        7) So I'm in a 16-team keeper fantasy league, four pickups a month, good league and highly competitive. I need another hitter and I'm listening to Mets' TV guys pumping up Wilmer Flores last night. I'm about to click on his page on my laptop, and Flores gets drilled on the hand by a pitch- he leaves the game. So much for that idea. .

        6) Tampa Bay rookie pitcher Blake Snell is wearing #4, making him 4th big league pitcher this year to wear a single digit number.

        5) With Florida AD Jeremy Foley retiring this week, you wonder if that played into Billy Donovan bolting Gainesville for the NBA last spring. If you're a college coach, you want to work for the AD that hired you. Makes life a lot easier.

        4) Other than the Pittsburgh/San Francisco markets, Buffalo had highest TV ratings for the Stanley Cup Finals, amongst American markets.

        3) Two groups have bid over $4B to buy UFC, thats how popular UFC is.

        2) Playing football is difficult. Steelers' center Maurkice Pouncey had six operations and a skin graft, just last year.

        1) Only nine golfers finished the first round of the US Open Thursday; if you like to watch golf on TV, today is your day.

                  June 16, 2016

Hottest team: Rockies (8-2 last 10)

Colorado has pulled with one game of the .500 mark following a successful 5-1 homestand. The Rockies swept the Yankees in a two-game series at Coors Field, while plating 19 runs in the two victories. Colorado embarks on a six-game road trip to Miami and New York looking for its second five-game winning streak of the season. However, the Rockies have slumped to a 4-8 mark in its previous 12 opportunities as a road underdog, while dropping three of four visits to Marlins Park last season.

Coldest team: Athletics (2-10 last 12)

Since sweeping the Twins at home to begin June, Oakland has fallen apart recently. The A’s were swept at Houston and Milwaukee, while salvaging the final game at Cincinnati to avoid an 0-8 road swing. Following a blowout of Texas in its first contest back from the road trip, the A’s lost three consecutive games to the Rangers, including squandering a 5-0 lead in Wednesday’s 7-5 setback. The A’s host the Angels for a weekend series, as Los Angeles swept Oakland back in April with the A’s scoring one run in two of the losses.

                  Hottest pitcher:
Michael Fulmer, Tigers (7-1, 2.52 ERA)

Past Jordan Zimmermann and Justin Verlander, Detroit has found a right-hander that is nearly an automatic win every time he hits the mound. Fulmer hasn’t allowed a run in his last four starts, while giving up a total of nine hits in this span. Detroit is 8-1 in Fulmer’s nine starts this season, including a 6-1 mark away from Comerica Park. Each of Fulmer’s past three road starts have finished ‘under’ the total, while four of the six away wins with him on the mound have come by three runs or more.

                  Coldest pitcher
: Jose Quintana, White Sox (5-7, 2.66 ERA)

Chicago won six of Quintana’s first seven starts this season, but the Sox are winless in the southpaw’s last six trips to the mound. Quintana has put together four quality starts during this 0-6 run, while the Sox offense has scored two runs or less in five of those defeats. The Sox are riding an incredible 12-0 run to the ‘under’ in Quintana’s last 12 starts, which includes a 4-3 loss to Cleveland on May 25 on a 7 ½ total. Last season, Quintana dominated the Indians at Progressive Field with a 2-0 mark which included a shutout of the Tribe on July 24.

                  Biggest UNDER run:
                  Astros (8-0 last eight)

Houston’s pitching stepped up in a two-game road sweep of red-hot St. Louis by allowing just three runs. The Astros cashed the ‘under’ in the final eight contests of their nine-game road swing, including a trio of ‘unders’ with totals of 7 ½ at Tampa Bay. Right-hander Lance McCullers continues to hit the ‘under’ for the Astros, as four of his past five starts have finished below the post total. Houston is currently on a 7-4 run to the ‘under’ in the last 11 games at Minute Maid Park.

Biggest OVER run: Rangers (5-2 last seven)

Texas came within three outs of a no-hitter on Thursday at Oakland, cashing the first ‘under’ of its four-game series against the Athletics. The Rangers have eclipsed the ‘over’ in nine of the past 11 games played away from Arlington, as Texas begins a three-game series at St. Louis. In six of seven contests on their current road swing, the Rangers have scored at least five runs. Texas finished ‘under’ the total in six of its first seven road series openers this season, but the ‘over’ has hit in three consecutive away Game 1’s.

Matchup to watch: Blue Jays vs. Orioles

These two AL East rivals are meeting up for the second time in a week as Toronto grabbed three of four matchups at home last weekend. The Blue Jays are heating up at the right time by winning six of the past seven games, coming off a 3-1 series against the reeling Phillies. The Orioles managed a series victory at Boston to sit in first place of the AL East all by themselves, capping things off with a 5-1 triumph on Thursday. Orioles’ right-hander Mike Wright picked up a no-decision the last time he faced the Blue Jays by allowing four earned runs in five innings of an 11-6 setback. Baltimore has won four of Wright’s last five home outings, while the O’s are 7-1 in the past eight contests at Camden Yards.

                  Betcha didn’t know
: The Mariners head to Fenway Park to face the Red Sox for the first time this season. When these teams hooked up in Boston last August, they combined for 16, 32, and 18 runs in a three-game set. The Red Sox plated 15 and 22 runs in their two victories, as the last six meetings in Boston have sailed ‘over’ the total.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-260) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Giants (+105) at Rays

Biggest line move: Angels (-115 to -135) at Athletics

                  • LEADING OFF: Tigers' Fulmer tries to extend shutout streak
                    June 17, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                    ROOKIE ON A ROLL

Tigers newcomer Michael Fulmer takes a scoreless streak of 28 1/3 innings into his start at Kansas City. The 23-year-old righty is 7-1 in his first big league season and has won five straight starts, and six decisions in a row overall. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he has become the first pitcher since 1893, when the mound was moved to its current distance, to throw at least six shutout innings and permit no more than three hits in four straight starts in the same season.

                    REMEMBRANCE

A crowd of around 40,000 is anticipated at Tropicana Field to watch the Tampa Bay Rays host San Francisco on Pride Night, which has been dedicated to the victims of last weekend's mass shooting in Orlando. The Rays put all open seats on sale Tuesday for $5 with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Pulse Victims Fund. Seats normally covered in the upper deck will be used.

                    WELCOME

The Cubs are expected to call up big-time catching prospect Willson Contreras from the minors, and he could make his major league debut vs. the Pirates at Wrigley Field. The 24-year-old Contreras is hitting .350 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs at Triple-A Iowa.

                    DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS

Texas lefty Cole Hamels has won seven straight decisions going into this outing at St. Louis. Cardinals righty Michael Wacha is 0-6 in his last nine starts.

                    TRY AGAIN

Mariners righty Hisashi Iwakuma is 0-1 with a 10.20 ERA in four career starts against Boston. He'll try again when Seattle visits Fenway Park.

                    TOUGH BREAK

Detroit right fielder J.D. Martinez will have a CT scan, a day after he broke his right elbow when he ran into the wall chasing a ball in Kansas City. The test should give the Tigers a better idea on how long Martinez, who throws right-handed, will be sidelined.

                    SAFE RETURN

The Reds figure speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton will come off the seven-day concussion disabled list before their game at Houston. He was hurt when he hit his head sliding into third base last week. Hamilton is 16 for 20 on steal tries this season.

                          • Nine for nine: Surprise starters cashing for MLB bettors

After Thursday night's near-perfect game Colby Lewis is +$923 when it comes to starters money.

On June 8, highly-touted 24-year-old pitching prospect Jameson Taillon made his Major League debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates in what eventually hit the box scores as a 6-5 loss to the defending National League Champion New York Mets. In that defeat, the 6-5, 240-pound righty from Lakeland, Florida surrendered just three earned runs through six credible innings of work. For all his efforts, Taillon was sent back down to the minors.

That’s not to say the Pirates weren’t impressed, because they most certainly were. There just wasn’t enough space on the 25-man roster to retain their bright young pitching star. But Taillon was called up again this past week when ace Gerrit Cole went on the disabled list with a right triceps strain and this time around he dazzled to the tune of 8.0 innings of work with just two hits and zero runs surrendered in a 4-0 win over that same New York Mets club.

The point of the story here is that the Pirates aren’t the only club in Major League Baseball that will be calling up highly-regarded pitching prospects over the next few months. In fact, several clubs will want to take a good, long look at what they have in their respective farm systems. The key, however, is to identify which of these pitchers will be able to deliver the goods at a great betting price night in and night out. But before we take a look at the prospects who could make some waves in the near future, let’s analyze nine surprising pitchers who have turned a sizeable profit through the first three months of the 2016 MLB season.

Chris Tillman, RHP, Baltimore Orioles (2.87 ERA)

                            Decisions: 9-1, +$883
                            Overall: 12-2, +$1,065

Analysis: The Orioles have emerged victorious in ten of Tillman’s last 11 starts, with the eight-year veteran surrendering two or fewer earned runs eight times during that stretch. Tillman boasts a diverse four-pitch arsenal (four-seam fastball, changeup, slider, knuckle-curve) that devastated the Red Sox for seven full innings on June 14 (5 hits, 1 earned run, 7 Ks) en route to a 3-2 Orioles victory despite entering the game as +176 underdogs. Take note, however, that the 6-5, 200-pound righty has been listed as a favorite in eight of his last nine trips to the bump.

Next start: Sunday, June 19 vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Colby Lewis, RHP, Texas Rangers (2.81 ERA)

                            Decisions: 6-0, +$821
                            Overall: 10-4, +$923

Analysis: Despite pitching for the A.L. West-leading Texas Rangers, Lewis has taken the mound as an underdog in six of his last seven starts, delivering a tremendous return on investment in the process. His latest gem came in the form of a complete game, two-hit masterpiece in Oakland on Thursday where the 36-year-old took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before surrendering a lone run in a 5-1 Texas victory. After losing back-to-back Lewis starts on May 4 and May 9, the Rangers have since rattled off seven straight wins with Lewis leading the charge, a stretch that has seen the pitcher lower his ERA from 3.20 to 2.81.

Next start: Tuesday, June 21 vs. Cincinnati Reds

Michael Fulmer, RHP, Detroit Tigers (2.52 ERA)

                            Decisions: 7-1, +$710
                            Overall: 8-1, +$860

Analysis: Since surrendering five runs on ten hits in a 9-4 loss at Cleveland on May 5, Fulmer has won six straight decisions while dropping his ERA from a lofty 6.30 to 2.52. More recently, the 23-year-old from Oklahoma City has rattled off a four-start stretch that has featured four wins, 27.1 innings pitched, nine hits and a staggering zero total earned runs. Give a large portion of the credit for that run to Fulmer’s incendiary fastball, the four-seam variety of which averages 94.4 mph with a complementary two-seamer that sits at 94.9 mph.

Next start: Friday, June 17 at Kansas City Royals

Josh Tomlin, RHP, Cleveland Indians (3.27 ERA)

                            Decisions: 8-1, +$707
                            Overall: 10-2, +$805

Analysis: Tomlin has allowed more than two earned runs in an outing just four times in 12 starts this season and only once over his last six trips to the hill, which has been intriguing to most observers considering the Cleveland staff features three starters in Cy Young-winner Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar who were expected to dominate the headlines in 2016. Another big plus here is the fact that despite all his early-season success, Tomlin has still been listed as an underdog in three of his last five starts, a trend we expect to see shift in the very near future.

Next start: Monday, June 20 vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Aaron Sanchez, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays (3.38 ERA)

                            Decisions: 6-1, +$486
                            Overall: 8-5, +$151

Analysis: Yes, Sanchez has turned a very respectable profit in his seven decisions this season, but bettors need to be advised that the 23-year-old has been the benefactor of elite run support through the first three months of the 2016 MLB campaign, with the Blue Jays scoring seven or more runs in five of Sanchez’s last six starts. Granted, the 6-4, 220-pound righty has limited the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine outings, but that explosive Toronto lineup is a big reason why Sanchez has been listed as a favorite of -140 or higher in four of his last six trips to the bump.

Next start: Friday, June 17 at Baltimore Orioles

Rich Hill, LHP, Oakland A’s (2.25 ERA)

                            Decisions: 8-3, +$480
                            Overall: 8-3, +$480

Analysis: Acquired on a one-year, $6 million free agent contract this past winter, Hill may go down as the best value signing of the offseason…and in classic Billy Beane/Oakland Athletics fashion, will likely be flipped at the trade deadline for prospects. The 36-year-old southpaw has enjoyed quite the renaissance in 2016 thanks to a devastating curveball that features more than eight inches of both horizontal and vertical movement. The downside here, however, is the fact that Hill is currently on the disabled list due to a groin injury and won’t resume throwing off a mound until next week at the earliest.

                            Next start: TBD

Tyler Chatwood, RHP, Colorado Rockies (2.89 ERA)

                            Decisions: 8-4, +$434
                            Overall: 9-4, +$534

Analysis: Prior to the start of the season, many industry insiders considered the Rockies to be nothing more than a 70-win team at best. Yet, here we are on June 17 and Colorado resides at just one game under .500 thanks, in part, to the efforts of Chatwood, who has surrendered a grand total of just 12 earned runs over his last seven starts, with the 26-year-old winning four of his last five decisions. Credit a nasty two-seam fastball for the five-year veteran’s success, as Chatwood currently ranks first in the National League in ground ball percentage at 58.7 percent. Like they say, if the ball is on the ground, it can’t leave the yard.

Next start: Saturday, June 18 at Miami Marlins

Steven Wright, RHP, Boston Red Sox (2.22 ERA)

                            Decisions: 8-4, +$418
                            Overall: 8-5, +$289

Analysis: Wright has emerged victorious in each of his last five starts while permitting two or fewer earned runs in four of those aforementioned outings. But perhaps what is more impressive is that the 31-year-old’s knuckleball has induced at least 12 ground ball outs in three of his last four trips to the hill after the four-year veteran notched just one such effort through his first nine starts of the season. Wright is coming on strong and bettors would be wise to take notice.

Next start: Monday, June 20 vs. Chicago White Sox

Christian Friedrich, LHP, San Diego Padres (2.12 ERA)

                            Decisions: 3-1, +$268
                            Overall: 4-2, +$301

Analysis: True to form, the Padres are a dumpster fire, with two of their best pitchers (Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross) on the disabled list unable to spray any additional gasoline on the fire. But almost too quietly, Friedrich joined the rotation in mid-May and has since proven to serve as a glimmer of hope, with six total starts featuring three or fewer earned runs surrendered. Not only that, but the 28-year-old lefty has allowed only one home run on 603 total pitches this season. The best part here? Friedrich has been listed as an underdog in five of six starts since joining the rotation.

Next start: Friday, June 17 vs. Washington Nationals.
