Monday's MLB Game of the Day: Mets at Nationals
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mets' 23-year-old fireballer, Noah Syndergaard, exited his last start after experiencing renewed discomfort in his right elbow, but an MRI returned clean.

        New York Mets at Washington Nationals (A: -117, H: -104, Total: 8.0)

The New York Mets and Washington Nationals will look to ignite their sputtering offenses at the other's expense on Monday when the National League East rivals open a three-game series in the nation's capital. New York mustered its only offense in the ninth inning of Sunday's 5-2 setback to the Atlanta Braves, falling to 4-5 with only 24 runs scored in that nine-game stretch.

Wilmer Flores had a run-scoring single on Sunday and is 4-for-10 with two RBIs in his last three games after a 3-for-29 stretch in his previous 11. The Mets have split their first six encounters with first-place Washington, which scored just 20 runs during a season-high seven-game losing skid before collecting only four hits in a 3-2 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. The Nationals hope their offense gets untracked by beginning a stretch of 19 of their next 23 contests in their own ballpark - starting with the opener of a 10-game homestand on Monday. Daniel Murphy went 0-for-4 in the finale versus the Brewers, but is a blistering 10-for-23 with two homers and six RBIs in six games versus his former team this season.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (New York), MASN (Washington)

        INJURY REPORT:

Mets - SP N. Syndergaard (Probable Monday, elbow), RP J. Henderson (15-Day DL, bicep), CF J. Lagares (15-Day DL, thumb), 3B D. Wright (15-Day DL, neck), 1B L. Duda (15-Day DL, back).

Nationals - RP J. Papelbon (15-Day DL, ribs).

WEATHER REPORT: There is a 60 percent chance of rain and a threat of developing thunderstorms this evening in Washington, D.C. Gametime temperatures will be in the mid-80's with high humidity and there will be a 5-10 mph breeze blowing out to left field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (8-2, 2.08 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (6-4, 3.11)

Syndergaard won his second straight start and improved to 6-0 in his last nine appearances on Wednesday after allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings versus Kansas City. The 23-year-old fireballer exited that contest after experiencing renewed discomfort in his right elbow, but an MRI returned clean, so manager Terry Collins and company feel Syndergaard is ready to face the Nationals for the second time this season. The Texas native improved to 2-0 versus Washington in his career after scattering five hits and striking out 10 in seven strong innings in a 2-0 win on May 17.

Ross looks to continue his strong stretch on Monday as Washington is shuffling its rotation with ace Stephen Strasburg (upper back strain) on the disabled list. The 23-year-old owns a 3-0 mark in his last six starts but settled for a no-decision versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday despite allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The home-run ball has plagued Ross, as he has been taken deep in four straight and eight of his last nine outings.

        TRENDS:

        * Mets are 23-4 in their last 27 Monday games.
        * Mets are 6-1 in Syndergaard's last 7 starts with 4 days of rest.
        * Nationals are 6-0 in their last 6 vs. National League East.
        * Nationals are 1-7 in their last 8 overall.
        * Nationals are 5-1 in Ross' last 6 starts.
        * Over is 5-0 in Syndergaard's last 5 starts overall.
        * Over is 6-0 in Nationals last 6 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
        * Over is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings in Washington.

CONSENSUS: The visiting New York Mets are slight favorites in today's Game of the Day and the public is favoring them early in the day at 57 percent. In totals wagering, Under 7.0 has a slight edge with the public with 52 percent of the picks.

        • MLB betting cheat sheet: Cleveland rocks!

Power Sports breaks down all the best MLB betting notes and odds for this week's series in our MLB betting cheat sheet, including the red-hot Cleveland Indians.

          Cleveland Rocks!

With the city still basking in the glow of its first major professional sports championship in 52 years, Cleveland’s baseball team has now caught fire.

You can make it three straight sweeps and nine straight wins for the Indians, who have outscored opponents 60-18 during this run, giving them the best run differential in the entire American League (+81) this season. Come playoff time, the rest of the AL will be hard-pressed to match this team’s starting rotation.

But as for right now, the Indians are following in the Cavaliers footsteps – quite literally. They just got done with Detroit and will next play Atlanta and Toronto. Sound familiar? Those are the same three cities that the Cavs went through en route to an Eastern Conference Championship. Like Cavs-Hawks, this Indians-Braves series has all the makings of a sweep for Cleveland, especially with the Braves being a ghastly 11-29 at Turner Field this season.

          Show Me Something

The I-70 series is renewed this week with the Royals and Cardinals playing four games, starting Monday in Kansas City.

The series will shift to St. Louis on Wednesday. Though the two teams come in with identical records (39-35), the Cardinals’ run differential (+75) is vastly superior to that of the Royals (-15), so in my mind you can make them the favorite in this series. But while the Cards are 24-14 on the road and averaging 6.1 runs per game, KC’s 26-10 home record must be respected as well.

Interestingly, the Royals are just 18-31 at home vs. the Cardinals since the start of Interleague Play (remember they were bad for most of those years), but 13-12 at the new Busch Stadium. In the last 10 head to head meetings, there’s been only one time that more than seven total runs were scored.

          Revenge in the Outfield

The Angels just avoided what could have been an embarrassing four-game sweep (at home) against the A’s (won 7-6 Sunday in final at-bat). The Astros just lost for the first time in eight games Sunday, 6-1 at Kansas City.

That makes this week’s three-game series in Angel Stadium sound promising for the road team, but beware the revenge angle as Los Angeles certainly remembers being swept last week in Minute Maid Park. Despite its recent resurgence, Houston still has a losing road record (17-22 this season).

          Pitching Notes

          * The move was long overdue, but Trevor Rosenthal is no longer the Cardinals closer. In 24 innings of work, Rosenthal had allowed 28 hits and issued 21 walks. It’s always key to remember the bullpens, so keep an eye on this situation when handicapping Cards-Royals this week.

          * There’s a big series set to take place in the Nation’s Capital this week with the Nationals hosting the Mets. Even after losing seven of eight, the Nats still have a three-game edge in the NL East standings, but when you look at how the home team’s starting rotation sets up this week, you won’t see the name Stephen Strasburg. Washington’s ace has been scratched twice in the last seven days due to back issues and is now heading to the disabled list, which is absolutely a troubling sign if you’re a Nats fan. The Nats are 13-1 with Strasburg on the hill this season, but just 31-31 in all other games.

          Hitting Notes

          * Look for the Reds to trade Jay Bruce shortly. The team is going nowhere, but Bruce’s bat could certainly be useful for a contending team. He just hit his 17th home run on Sunday and has a slash line of .279/.328/.581. This week, Cincinnati hosts a Cubs team that all of a sudden has lost five of its last six games.

          * The Tampa Bay Rays have now lost 11 straight games after being swept by the Orioles over the weekend. Injuries have decimated their lineup with five hitters currently on the disabled list, including team batting average leader Steve Pearce. They’d gone nine straight games without scoring more than four runs before the last two. Things get no easier this week as the Red Sox come calling.

          Totals Trend

The Under is a perfect 5-0 for Michael Shoemaker in June. The Angels hurler will toe the rubber Monday against Houston.

          Monday's Weather Report:

          * There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 60 percent chance of rain in Washington where the Nats and Mets will open their series Monday evening. There will also be a 5-10 mph wind blowing out to left field. The total is set at 7.5.

          * Turner Field in Atlanta will be the site for Monday's game between the Braves and the Cleveland Indians. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast and a 50 percent chance of rain. The total is set at 8.0.

          * There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 30 percent chance of rain in Denver where the Rockies will host the Toronto Blue Jays in interleague action. There will also be a 5-10 mph breeze blowing in from right field. The total is set at 11.5.

              June 28, 2016

CINCINNATI (AP) Kris Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game, and Jake Arrieta added a solo shot in the ballpark where he threw a no-hitter in April, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 11-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

The Cubs pulled out of their 1-6 slide behind a tandem that's had some huge moments in Cincinnati.

Arrieta (12-2) threw his second career no-hitter on April 21 during a 16-0 win over the Reds. Bryant led the way with two homers in that game, including a grand slam that gave him a career-high six RBIs.

Arrieta struggled in his return to Cincinnati, giving up a season-high five runs in five innings, but Bryant drove in six again to back the right-hander. Bryant's 16 total bases were a Cubs record, and his five hits marked a career high.

Bryant homered twice off Dan Straily (4-5) and once against Ross Ohlendorf, who also gave up a homer to Anthony Rizzo.

Arrieta hit an opposite-field drive - his fourth career home run - off Michael Lorenzen. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner became the league's first 12-game winner despite his worst outing of the season.

              INDIANS 8, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Lonnie Chisenhall hit a three-run homer, Trevor Bauer (6-2) gave up two runs in six innings and Cleveland beat Atlanta for its 10th straight win.

Jason Kipnis added a home run in the ninth.

The AL Central-leading Indians extended the majors' longest winning streak of the season. It is Cleveland's longest run since closing the 2013 regular season with 10 straight wins.

The Indians have outscored opponents 68-21 and hit 21 homers during the streak. They had 14 hits and scored at least six runs for the seventh straight game.

Chisenhall homered in the fourth off Tyrell Jenkins (0-1). He relieved Braves rookie John Gant, who exited in the third with a left oblique strain.

              RANGERS 9, YANKEES 6

NEW YORK (AP) - The Texas Rangers wrapped up a weird win at 2:44 a.m. Tuesday, rallying after a rain delay of more than 3 1/2 hours in the ninth inning to beat New York with maybe 100 fans left in the stands.

Yankee Stadium was so deserted that shouts from Texas players cheering in the dugout for Adrian Beltre's go-ahead, two-run single could easily be heard bouncing around the ballpark.

Texas trailed 6-5 when Kirby Yates replaced closer Aroldis Chapman after the delay with a runner on first and no outs. Yates (2-1) hit three batters, and Beltre and Elvis Andrus each hit a two-run single.

By then, the cleaning crews had already started their work in the upper decks.

Rain-themed songs wafted over the sound system while showers fell during the break of 3 hours, 35 minutes.

Tony Barnette (5-2) got the win and Sam Dyson earned his 16th save as Texas won its third in a row.

Ian Desmond and Rougned Odor homered for Texas, which owns the best record in the AL. Mark Teixeira homered for the second straight day and got three hits for the Yankees.

              NATIONALS 11, METS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ben Revere had four hits and three steals as Washington handed Noah Syndergaard his first loss in more than a month, beating New York in the opener of a three-game series between NL East rivals.

Nationals starter Joe Ross (7-4) gave up four early runs, then retired 11 of his last 12 batters. Anthony Rendon had three RBIs for Washington.

The Nationals increased their lead over idle Miami to 3 1/2 games, while the Mets are four games back. The Nationals stole six bases, matching their most since the franchise moved to Washington in 2005.

Five steals came against Syndergaard (8-3), who had won six consecutive decisions and had not lost since May 6. He lasted only three innings, surrendering season highs in runs (5) and walks (3).

              DODGERS 5, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A.J. Ellis hit a tiebreaking, two-out infield single that capped a four-run fifth inning, and Los Angeles rallied past Pittsburgh to salvage the finale of a four-game series.

Scott Kazmir (6-3), who entered with an 11.17 ERA at PNC Park, won despite allowing four runs, four hits and four walks in five innings. Kenley Jansen, the Dodgers' sixth pitcher, got four outs for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Francisco Liriano (4-8) led by four runs early and took a two-hitter and a 4-1 lead into the fifth, when he was chased by Yasiel Puig's two-run single.

              RAYS 13, RED SOX 7

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Nick Franklin homered and drove in a career-high five runs to help Tampa Bay end an 11-game losing streak with a victory over Boston.

Franklin had his first three hits of the season, and Logan Forsythe and Desmond Jennings also homered in support of rookie Blake Snell (1-2), who allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings to get his first big league win.

Tampa Bay's skid matched the longest in the majors this year.

Forsythe finished with three of Tampa Bay's season-best 18 hits, including a two-run homer off Eduardo Rodriguez (1-3) that gave Snell a 9-0 lead in the third. Logan Morrison drove in two during a five-run first.

Rodriguez gave up nine runs and 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings.

              ROCKIES 9, BLUE JAYS 5

DENVER (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez hit a three-run homer, Jon Gray tossed seven solid innings and the Rockies beat Toronto to spoil Troy Tulowitzki's return to Colorado.

Tulowitzki went 0 for 4 in his first game at Coors Field since Toronto acquired him from the Rockies last July 27. He received a standing ovation when he batted in the second inning. He stepped out of the batter's box and doffed his helmet to the 36,491 fans.

Edwin Encarnacion homered twice and Devon Travis also went deep for the Blue Jays.

Gray (5-3) allowed four runs and struck out eight. Colorado rallied for six runs in the seventh off three relievers. Drew Storen (1-3) hit two straight batters with pitches ahead of Nolan Arenado's two-run single.

              ROYALS 6, CARDINALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Danny Duffy matched a career best with eight sharp innings and Kansas City defeated St. Louis to open a four-game, two-city series between cross-state rivals.

Kendrys Morales went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs, and Eric Hosmer also had a pair of RBIs as the Royals roughed up Adam Wainwright (6-5) to snap a four-game losing streak to the Cardinals.

Duffy (3-1) served up a two-run homer to Matt Holliday in the first before settling into a nice rhythm. The left-hander struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.

It was Wainwright's first loss in six starts at Kauffman Stadium.

              ATHLETICS 8, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Daniel Mengden pitched into the eighth inning for his first major league win, backed by Marcus Semien's three-run homer and four RBIs, and Oakland beat San Francisco to open the Bay Bridge Series.

Semien connected in the second, and Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis added RBI doubles against Jeff Samardzija (8-5) during a five-run inning. Semien added a run-scoring double in the sixth, and Davis hit an RBI single in the seventh.

Mengden (1-3) retired his first 13 batters before Angel Pagan's one-out single in the fifth. He was pulled in the eighth after losing his shutout bid.

Oakland won for the fourth time in five games, handing the Giants just their third defeat in 16 games and fourth in 17 at AT&T Park.

              PHILLIES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Vince Velasquez threw five strong innings in his return from the disabled list, and Philadelphia beat Arizona.

Velasquez (6-2), who hadn't pitched since June 8 because of a right biceps strain, gave up five hits and struck out seven with no walks. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 84 pitches before he was removed as a precaution.

Robbie Ray (4-7) blanked the Phillies through five innings before getting tagged with two runs in the sixth and two in Philadelphia's six-run seventh.

The Diamondbacks were just back from a 7-3 road trip that included a four-game sweep of the Phillies.

Odubel Herrera had four hits, and Maikel Franco drove in three runs.

              ASTROS 4, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Correa snapped a ninth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly, and Will Harris pitched out of a major jam moments later to preserve Houston's victory over Los Angeles.

After the Angels loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, Harris struck out Jett Bandy and snagged Andrelton Simmons' comebacker to start a 1-2-3 double play that ended the game.

Houston scored its second run in the ninth on a wild pitch by J.C. Ramirez. The surging Astros have won six straight against the Angels and eight of nine overall.

Mike Trout homered in his third consecutive game for Los Angeles, which has lost seven of eight. He had three hits and scored twice.

Luke Gregerson (3-1) tossed a scoreless inning for the win, and Harris earned his seventh save in as many chances.

Fernando Salas (3-5) took the loss.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: NFL knowledge to ponder......

                13) Falcons-- Missed playoffs last three years, going 18-30, despite starting 5-0 LY. Were last in NFL in sacks (19) LY, 5-5 in games decided by less than seven points. .

                12) Bills-- Had only 21 sacks LY (31st) so Rex Ryan brought his brother Rob in to help with the defense. Led NFL in rushing yards, but were #28 in passing yards.

                11) Panthers-- Will be hard to re-create +20 turnover margin; they were 5-0 in games decided by less than 7 points. Have four games west of Rockies this season. Getting Kelvin Benjamin back at WR provides some upside.

                10) Bengals-- Made playoffs last five years, but its been 25 years since they last won a playoff game. Were +11 in turnovers, allowed 2nd-least points, but will have their third offensive coordinator in last four years this season.

                9) Cowboys-- Had four QBs throw 98+ passes LY; they lost 12 of last 14 games after a 2-0 start. Their -22 turnover margin was worst in the NFL.

                8) Packers-- Five of McCarthy's seven playoff losses came on the last play of game. Started 6-0, stumbled to 4-6 finish, scoring 8-13 points in last two games- they get Jordy Nelson back from injury at WR this year.

                7) Texans-- O'Brien is "QB guru" but Texans used nine QBs (starting seven) in his first two years in Houston. Only two of their 16 games LY were decided by less than seven points- they should have five new starters on offense this year.

                6) Colts-- Luck missed nine games LY; Indy was 29th in rushing yards, 22nd passing, 28th in total yards- they drafted four offensive linemen. Also have their third OC in last five seasons.

                5) Vikings-- Minnesota is 24-9 vs spread under Zimmer, 15-5 as an underdog; they were 4th in rushing yards, 31st in passing yards- their fired their offensive line coach.

                4) Patriots-- Went 3-5 in last eight games after a 10-0 start; Garoppolo threw four passes all year-- now he has to start the first four games, with Brady suspended. Patriots had 49 sacks LY, second-most in NFL.

                3) Giants-- Lost six of last seven games, but kept both coordinators and fired a future Hall of Fame head coach. Went 6-10 LY despite a +7 turnover ratio; they allowed an average of 420 yards/game (last) and gave up 40.7 ppg in last three games.

                2) Saints-- 31st in rushing yards allowed, 31st in passing yards, 31st in total yards, last in points allowed. Brees threw for 4,870 yards but is 37 now. Only had five draft picks this year-- two of them were offensive players.

                1) Steelers-- Roethlisberger is 34 now; Pitt was #3 in passing yards, T4 in scoring, despite Big Ben missing five games. Had 48 sacks under new DC Butler, 3rd in NFL.

                        • Tuesday's Diamond Notes
                          June 28, 2016

Hottest team: Astros (10-2 past 12)

The Houston Astros doubled up the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the Big A Monday night, as Collin McHugh recorded a quality start. They turn to 6-foot-7 veteran SP Scott Feldman to make the start in the second game of the series, as SP Lance McCullers (blister) was scratched from his start. Houston is still locked in as a road favorite, and the public likes them at about a 60-40 clip. Houston has won four of their past five road games, and they're 16-5 in their past 21 games against a team with a losing overall record. Their hot streak will be put to the test, however, as the 'Stros are 0-6 in Feldman's past six starts.

Coldest team: Nationals (2-7 past 9)

The Washington Nationals picked up an 11-4 victory to kick off their homestand, but it was just their second win in the past nine games. The first-place Nats are so desperate to hang onto the perch in the National League East that they pulled the trigger and called up top prospect SP Lucas Giolito to make the start Tuesday against the Mets. The Nationals have been equally ice-cold against the Mets at home, dropping five of the past six meetings with their divisional rivals at Nationals Park.

Hottest pitcher: Zack Greinke, Diamondbacks (10-3, 3.61 ERA)

Greinke and the Arizona Diamondbacks look to rebound after being humbled 8-0 in the opening game of the series Monday night. Greinke is the perfect stopper, as he enters 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA in five starts over the past 30 days while striking out 31 batters in 39 innings with a .180 opponent batting average and 0.85 WHIP. Arizona is 12-2 in Greinke's past 14 assignments, including 4-0 in his past four starts at home. In addition, the Snakes are 7-0 in Greinke's past seven outings against a team with a losing overall record.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Archer, Rays (4-10, 4.70 ERA)

Archer leads the majors with 10 losses through 16 starts, and he has a career-worst 4.70 ERA and 1.43 WHIP despite ranking among the best in the majors in strikeouts per nine innings ratio (K/9). To make matters worse, Archer is 1-7 with a 5.67 ERA in 12 career outings against the Boston Red Sox, his most losses against any opponent. In his only meeting against Boston this season, he was tuned up for six earned runs, eight hits and three walks in just 4 1/3 innings in a loss back on April 20.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (7-3-2 past 12)

The Cardinals have had a little bit of a power outage on their current road trip, and they have scratched out four or fewer runs in 10 of their past 12 games. The under is also 5-2 in their past seven matchups against a right-handed starter, while going an impressive 35-15-5 in their past 55 against American League Central squads. Total bettors will also be interested in the fact the under is 4-0-2 in their past six trips west on Interstate 70 to Kansas City, and 8-1-4 in the past 13 meetings overall between these Show-Me State rivals.

Biggest OVER run: Rockies (7-0 past seven)

The Colorado Rockies are enjoying a little home cooking, posting overs in each of their five home games, and seven straight games overall. They are averaging 8.8 runs per game over the past five, and with SP Eddie Butler on the hill another over result is in the offing. The over is 4-1-1 in his past six home starts, while the over is 10-3 in their past 13 games at Coors Field against left-handed starting pitchers. The over is also an impressive 17-5 in Colorado's past 22 interleague home games against teams with a winning overall mark.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Pirates

The Seattle Mariners host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of their interleague series. The Mariners are two games under .500 in 36 games at Safeco Field this season, but they came alive with a series win against the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend. The M's were resting on an off day Monday, while the Pirates were busy playing an afternoon game against the Dodgers in Pittsburgh to conclude their wrap-around series at PNC Park. The Pirates have dropped their past five on the road, and they're a dismal 3-12 in their past 15 against right-handed starting pitching. The Mariners have won five of the past seven starts by Hisashi Iwakuma, and they're 8-2 in their past 10 interleague battles.

Betcha didn’t know: The biggest reason for the struggles of the Minnesota Twins this season has been their inability to win inside their own division. The Twins are a dismal 5-22 in their past 27 games against American League Central Division foes. Something's gotta give against the Chicago White Sox, as the Pale Hose are just 5-17 in their past 22 games inside the division. Looking at head-to-head statistics, trends point to Chicago. The Twins have won just one of their past five trips to U.S. Cellular Field, and the Twins have dropped six in a row against the White Sox.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-165) at Braves

                          Biggest public underdog:
                          Cardinals (+115) at Royals

                          Biggest line move:
Indians (+150 to +165) at Braves

                          • LEADING OFF: Giolito debuts, Indians go for 11th straight
                            June 28, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                            THE NEXT BIG THING?

Top pitching prospect Lucas Giolito makes his big league debut for Washington against the NL East-rival Mets. Selected 16th overall in the 2012 amateur draft, the 21-year-old Giolito is 5-3 with a 3.17 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 71 innings at Double-A Harrisburg this season. ''He's ready for the task,'' Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. A spot opened in Washington's rotation when ace Stephen Strasburg went on the disabled list Sunday with an upper back strain.

                            PERFECT 10

Cleveland goes for its 11th straight victory when 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (7-7, 3.59 ERA) pitches in Atlanta. The AL Central leaders have the longest winning streak in the majors this season and their longest run since closing the 2013 regular season with 10 consecutive wins. The Indians have outscored opponents 68-21 and hit 21 homers during the streak. Matt Wisler (3-7, 4.22), who has a 7.59 ERA in four June starts, pitches for the last-place Braves.

                            TOP THAT

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant tries to follow up his powerful performance in Cincinnati. Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game on Monday night, setting a franchise record with 16 total bases. His six RBIs matched a career high.

                            WELCOME BACK

Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura (6-4) returns from an eight-game suspension stemming from a brawl in Baltimore. He will face Cardinals righty Michael Wacha (3-7), who won for the first time in nearly two months his last time out against the Cubs.

                            BACK IN THERE

Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is expected back in the Yankees' lineup when they face Rangers lefty Cole Hamels (8-1). The three-time MVP was on the bench Monday against righty Chi Chi Gonzalez and said he was ''surprised'' he was held out for the second straight day. New York manager Joe Girardi explained that A-Rod has struggled against right-handers. Rodriguez, who turns 41 next month, is batting .223 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 44 games overall. ''You haven't heard the last of me,'' he said.

                            TWO LOOKS LEFT

Dodgers lefty Julio Urias (0-2, 4.33 ERA) pitches in Milwaukee, getting another shot at his first major league win when he takes one of his final two turns in the rotation. Los Angeles plans to give the 19-year-old rookie a break; he pitched 80 innings last year and already has thrown a combined 68 in the minors and majors this season.

                            ON A ROLL

Zack Greinke attempts to win his eighth consecutive decision when the Arizona Diamondbacks host Philadelphia.

                            REDDICK IS READY

The A's welcome back right fielder Josh Reddick from the disabled list for the second game in a four-game Bay Bridge Series against the San Francisco Giants. Out since May 20 with a broken left thumb, Reddick had planned to return Monday but pushed it back a day because he didn't feel quite right and wanted one more rehab game with Triple-A Nashville.

                            • 1st-Half Breakdown
                              June 27, 2016

162 games is a long season.

Every year teams sprint out of the gate in April and May with October dreams, only to come back to the pack by July.

It's not a sprint, of course, but a marathon, where a strong balance of pitching, defense and offense carries the best teams into the postseason.

Injuries, too, are key, as well as trades made before the July deadline. Teams have figured out their strengths and weaknesses now and are beginning to look for pieces to add before the deadline, while others are figuring out whom to dump.

Here's a look at some recent baseball surging and slumping teams.

                              Kansas CityRoyals:
The defending champs started off slow (17-19) but then found their groove in mid-May, playing well. They went 4-2 on a road trip, then ripped off six in a row during a homestand. The offense has been the main cause of their struggles, bottom 10 in baseball in runs scored.

But the defense is Top 10 along with the pitching staff, anchored by veterans Ian Kennedy and Edison Volquez. The relief staff shortens the game with a quartet of relievers who already have double digits in saves and holds with Wade Davis, Luke Hochevar, Joakim Soria and Kelvin Herrera. They should be in it for the long haul again and may be shopping for a bat this month.

                              Seattle Mariners:
Seattle has surprised, with a terrific offense and a dominant team away from home. Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager power the attack on a station-to-station offense that has few steals. Their run differential is one of the best in the AL.

The pitching staff has done its share, Top 10 in team ERA anchored by ace Felix Hernandez and a strong bullpen. Outside of King Felix, however, the starting staff is a tad thin. Don't be surprised if they're shopping for a veteran starter and some speed, which would help in spacious Safeco Field.

New York Mets: The Mets have been winning both home and away despite an offense that has been near the bottom of the league in runs. They need Yoenis Cespedes to get healthy, as the team doesn't manufacture runs, with the opposition out-stealing them by almost four-to-one. The Mets had been 0-18 when trailing after seven innings before squeezing out a win last month.

You need pitching to stay competitive during the long summer and the Mets have it, Top 5 in runs allowed. Noad Syndergarrd, Steve Matz and Jacob deGrom have been outstanding with Matt Harvey beginning to turn a corner of late after a rough start. They probably will be in the market for a productive bat in July.

Miami Marlins: What to make of the kids in Miami? A winning road record opened some eyes in the first half, especially after a 5-11 start, winning 11 of 12. The offense has disappointed, despite 25-year old CF Marcell Ozuna and 26-year old RF Giancarlo Stanton, the latter with power but his batting average has plummeted.

It's the pitching that has carried the load with Jose Fernandez, Mike Conley and Wei-Yin Chen. Fernandez posted a 6-0 record in May and the only pitchers since 1893 to do that along with at least 50 strikeouts were Pedro Martinez in 1999 and Roger Clemens in 1997 -- Cy Young winners each time. They are on a nine-game road trip this week and next as they make their way to the All-Star break.

                              Houston Astros:
It wasn't a good start for the young boys from Houston, but they picked up the pace in May and June to get back in the race. A bold pick to win the 2018 World Series a few years ago by some, Houston is way ahead of schedule. Diminutive 26-year old 2B Jose Altuve is a force along with 26-year old RF George Springer. This group swings for the fences, leading the league in strikeouts, but they can play small-ball, too, outstanding at swiping bases. Note that Houston is 15-36 after scoring five runs or more in their previous game.

It's the erratic pitching that has disappointed, led by inconsistent Dallas Keuchel, last year's Cy Young winner. He continues to struggle most away from home. 32-year old Doug Fister is doing his best to anchor the staff, but he needs some help. The Astros are 45-22 at home against a right-handed starter.

Chicago White Sox: Which way are they going? After a 24-12 start with the best pitching in the American League, it looked like Chicago might actually have two teams in the World Series. But the wheels came off at that point, making a Great Race in the AL Central. The pitching is still strong behind Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Matt Latos.

But the offense struggles at getting guys on base with little power, outside of 3B Todd Frazier. They could use a hot bat from Joe Abreu -- or a new bat before the trading deadline? The White Sox are 54-111 on the road against a team with a winning home record.
