  • LEADING OFF: Strasburg scratched, Nats aim to end 7-game rut
    June 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

    WOBBLING WASHINGTON

The NL East-leading Nationals have lost seven in a row and now they've lost their ace for at least another start, too. The team said Stephen Strasburg had been scratched for the series finale in Milwaukee because he felt pain while throwing before Saturday's 6-5 loss. Strasburg (10-0) missed his previously scheduled start because of a strained upper back. Tanner Roark will pitch instead at Miller Park.

    TIGERS TRY AGAIN

Detroit is 0-8 against the Indians this season and has been outscored 51-17 in those defeats. The Tigers aim to avoid a three-game sweep by the AL Central leaders at Comerica Park when Justin Verlander starts against Josh Tomlin. Verlander (7-5) has struck out 69 in 65 1/3 innings since May 8 and opponents are hitting .190 off him in that span. Cleveland has won eight in a row overall.

    MAGIC NUMBER

Pete Rose will have his No. 14 retired by the Reds before they host San Diego. The 75-year-old Rose is back in his hometown this weekend for ceremonies honoring the Big Red Machine teams of 1975-76. He is the all-time hits leader with 4,256 and played 19 seasons for Cincinnati.

    HOME-FIELD FERNANDEZ

Miami ace Jose Fernandez is 23-1 all-time at Marlins Park going into his first-ever start vs. the Cubs. On Saturday, he was nicked in his pitching hand by a foul ball in the dugout, but was OK and even asked if he could pinch-hit late in the game. The Cubs have the best record in the majors despite losing five of their last six.

    REYES RETURNS

Jose Reyes debuts for the Class A Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League, a day after signing a minor league contract with his old team, the New York Mets. Reyes became a free agent Saturday after being released by the Rockies following his 59-day suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

    • Yankees activate 1B Mark Teixeira from DL, cut Ike Davis
      June 25, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) First baseman Mark Teixeira has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is in the New York Yankees' lineup against the Minnesota Twins.

Teixeira is set to bat sixth on Saturday, his first major league game since June 3. The switch-hitter had been sidelined with torn cartilage in his right knee.

To open a spot on the roster, New York designated first baseman Ike Davis for assignment. Davis was signed June 13 and went 3 for 14 (.214) with an RBI for the Yankees.

New York manager Joe Girardi says the team chose to keep Rob Refsnyder over Davis in part because Refsnyder can play other positions besides first base.

The 36-year-old Teixeira went 1 for 9 in three rehab games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The three-time All-Star was struggling at the plate before he got hurt, batting .180 with three homers and 12 RBIs.

            • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Colts' owner Jim Irsay paid $137,500 for Prince's yellow guitar that he used from 1988-94. Apparently Irsay has an extensive collection of musical instruments.

-- Over is 83-55 in interleague games this season: 46-28 in AL parks, 37-27 in NL parks, where there is no DH used. Games in AL parks have a DH.

-- New Orleans Saints defense gave up 54 first downs via penalty LY; no one else gave up more than 50.

-- Tony Stewart ended an 84-race winless streak when he won at Sonoma Sunday.

-- Mark Reynolds hit a walk-off HR for the Rockies; it was his 245th career home run but his first walk-off tater.

-- Jose Reyes played 3B in his first minor league game with the Mets Sunday.

              **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

              13) Washington Nationals lost seven of last eight games, but still lead Mets, Marlins by three games in NL East; they open a series with the Mets tonight at home. Nationals have pitching problems: Gio Gonzalez is 0-6, 8.68 in his last seven starts and Steven Strasburg is on DL with a rib injury suffered while lifting weights.

              12) Coastal Carolina plays Arizona in best-of-3 finals of College World Series; they are in CWS for first time. Last time a team won the CWS in their first appearance in the World Series was Minnesota, back in 1956.

              11) Coastal Carolina's coach took some grief on social media Saturday; his pitcher threw 137 pitches in Saturday's win (he is a submariner, which puts less stress on arms, but still.....) and apparently a kid was warming up during the game who had thrown 83 pitches in Friday's game.

There is a delicate balance between winning and abusing a pitcher's arm.

              10) Jacob deGrom never pitched in high school; he's doing pretty well now. .If he had not played baseball at Stetson, the only college baseball team that recruited him, then he would've played basketball at Bethune-Cookman.

              9) Andrew White, second-leading scorer for Nebraska last season, plans to play at another school as a graduate transfer next year. Coach Tim Miles said White requested a release and will be given one- they could've restricted what schools he went to. .

White, who sat out the 2014-15 season after transferring from Kansas, averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds in his only season with the Cornhuskers, who are screwed with their best player jumping ship on June 25, well after recruiting ended.

I'll say this about basketball transfers; it is a free country and a kid can transfer if he wants to, but when a kid plays for three teams in four years, it is a major red flag.

              8) Cleveland Indians won their last nine games, lead AL Central by five games over the Royals; they're 9-0 against Detroit this season- they lead the Tigers by seven.

              7) There is a weird rule in SEC basketball; teams cannot sign JC players unless the kid has been at the JC for 3+ semesters. This rule cost Ole Miss a recruit this spring and it cost Georgia Jae Crowder a few years ago- he went to Marquette instead and is now a solid contributor for the Boston Celtics.

              6) Former big league outfielder Greg Vaughn (355 big league HRs) will be caddying on the PGA Tour next weekend in Reno for Spencer Levin (84th in FedEx standings). .

              5) There have been 32 games this year where a starting pitcher went 7+ innings, gave up 0 or 1 run, and yet didn't win the game.

              4) Sunday was Colorado's first walk-off win of the year; it was 7th for the Giants, most in the major leagues. Must be an even-numbered year- Giants won World Series in 2010, 2012, 2014, the last three even-numbered years.

              3) Last year in college football, Big 14 teams were 11-2 SU against MAC teams- they use those games as tune-ups for conference play. Against the spread however, those MAC teams went 10-3 against the number, very impressive.

              2) Purdue was only one of those 13 games where the Big 14 team was an underdog; Boilers lost 35-28 as 3-point home underdogs to Bowling Green.

              1) Over the last five years, MAC teams are 32-29 against the spread when playing a Big 14 opponent, so last year was best they've done in some time.

                June 26, 2016

DETROIT (AP) Lonnie Chisenhall had four hits, including one of Cleveland's four home runs off Justin Verlander in the fifth inning, and the streaking Indians won their ninth straight game Sunday by beating Detroit 9-3 to remain unbeaten in nine meetings with the Tigers this season.

Juan Uribe, Tyler Naquin and Mike Napoli also went deep for the Indians. Chisenhall was 4 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs.

Mike Tomlin (9-1) beat Verlander for the third time this year, allowing three runs and six hits in eight innings.

Cleveland overcame three homers by former teammates, including two by Victor Martinez, to sweep Detroit for the third time this year. The Indians have outscored the Tigers 60-20 in nine games.

Only once before had Verlander (7-6) allowed four homers in a start - also against the Indians in 2007. According to the Elias Sports Bureau and Fox Sports Detroit, he became the first pitcher in franchise history to give up four in one inning.

                MARLINS 6, CUBS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Jose Fernandez delivered another gem at Marlins Park, striking out 13 and allowing one run in seven innings to help Miami beat faltering Chicago.

The Marlins won three of four from the injury-depleted Cubs, who went 1-6 for the week but still have the best record in the majors.

Fernandez (10-3) improved his career record at home to 24-1 with a 1.48 ERA, and this year the right-hander has been pretty good everywhere - he has a 2.28 ERA and 138 strikeouts.

Giancarlo Stanton doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth for the Marlins, who went 7-3 on their homestand. At 41-35, they're six games above .500 for the first time since June 2012, their first season in Marlins Park.

Jason Hammel (7-4) allowed two runs in six innings, and the Cubs lost his fourth start in a row even though he pitched out of several jams.

Martin Prado hit a three-run double in the ninth.

                ORIOLES 12, RAYS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis hit his seventh career grand slam, and Baltimore completed an unprecedented sweep of Tampa Bay that extended the Rays' losing streak to 11 games.

Jonathan Schoop and Mark Trumbo also homered for the AL East leaders, whose 31-13 home record is the best in the majors. Baltimore has won five straight to climb a season-high 15 games over .500 (45-30).

Davis hit an opposite-field drive to left after the Orioles used a walk and two singles to load the bases with no outs in the first inning against Drew Smyly (2-8).

That sent Baltimore to its first four-game sweep in a rivalry that began in 1998. The Orioles are 7-2 against Tampa Bay this season, 6-0 at home.

Tyler Wilson (4-5) earned his first win in seven home starts this season despite allowing five runs and 10 hits over five innings.

The Rays have been outscored 72-29 during their skid and yielded at least five runs in each game. The defeat completed an 0-7 swing through Cleveland and Baltimore, the third time in franchise history the team has gone winless on a road trip of at least seven games.

Desmond Jennings and newcomer Oswaldo Arcia homered for the Rays, mired in their longest losing streak in seven years.

                PIRATES 4, DODGERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chad Kuhl ended Clayton Kershaw's nine-game winning streak in his major league debut, and David Freese hit a three-run double that sent Pittsburgh past Los Angeles.

The 23-year-old Kuhl (1-0) allowed three runs and four hits in five innings after getting called up from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game.

Kershaw (11-2) took his second loss exactly two months after he was beaten by Miami. He gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings, striking out four.

Freese's big hit capped a four-run second. Pittsburgh rookie Adam Frazier drove in the first run with a single after entering in the top of the inning when shortstop Jordy Mercer was injured.

The Pirates have won three in a row against the Dodgers after losing 13 of 15 overall and can sweep the four-game series Monday. Los Angeles arrived on a six-game winning streak.

Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save in 23 opportunities, combining with Juan Nicasio and A.J. Schugel for four scoreless innings of relief.

Justin Turner homered and drove in all three Dodgers runs. He had two of their four hits.

                NATIONALS 3, BREWERS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Tanner Roark pitched seven shutout innings in place of injured ace Stephen Strasburg, and Washington ended a seven-game losing streak by beating Milwaukee.

Jose Lobaton and Clint Robinson homered for the Nationals. Lobaton hit his first homer of the season in the seventh off reliever Jacob Barnes (0-1). Robinson added a two-run shot in the eighth.

Roark (7-5) held the Brewers to seven hits and struck out seven. Strasburg was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game with an upper back strain.

Shawn Kelley retired four batters for his third save.

                TWINS 7, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Tyler Duffey set down the first 17 New York batters and wound up pitching two-hit ball for eight innings while Minnesota backed him with six home runs.

Brian Dozier, Trevor Plouffe and Max Kepler hit consecutive homers in the sixth to help the Twins end a three-game skid. Danny Santana, Eduardo Nunez and Juan Centeno also connected.

Duffey (3-6) pitched perfect ball until Aaron Hicks doubled with two outs in the sixth. Duffey struck out eight, walked none and stopped a team that had won three in a row. The 25-year-old righty began the day with a 6.18 ERA, was 0-3 in his last five starts and had been hit hard in seven straight outings.

The Twins have won just two of their last 12 against New York.

Nathan Eovaldi (6-5) lost to Minnesota for the second time in eight days. He is winless in five starts, tagged for 10 homers and 25 runs over 26 innings during that span.

Mark Teixeira homered in the Yankees eighth.

Carlos Gonzalez had a grand slam, and Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon also went deep for the Rockies, who gained a split of the four-game series.

Story was hit by a pitch leading off the ninth. Silvino Bracho (0-1) retired the next two batters before Reynolds connected for his eighth home run. It was Colorado's first walk-off win since Sept. 26, 2015.

Carlos Estevez (2-5) was the winner.

Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and four RBIs for Arizona.

Angel Pagan had a season-high four hits and two RBIs while five others had two hits apiece for San Francisco, which has won 13 of 15.

Gyorko and Pham led off the seventh with back-to-back home runs against reliever Nick Vincent (1-7) to break a 6-all tie. Holliday extended St. Louis' lead to 9-6 with a solo shot in the eighth against Edwin Diaz. Pham and Carpenter each hit their second home runs, both solo shots, in the ninth.

Kevin Siegrist (5-2) allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

Trout led off the ninth with a single against Liam Hendriks (0-1). With one out and the bases loaded, Marte's fly to center field scored Trout easily from third.

The Angels trailed 6-2 after six innings, but Trout hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Marte had an RBI single in a two-run eighth. Huston Street (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Coco Crisp hit a grand slam for Oakland in the fourth. Marcus Semien followed with his 14th homer.

                RANGERS 6, RED SOX 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The first six Texas hitters reached safely for an early lead, and Martin Perez pitched six solid innings against Boston for his sixth straight win.

Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer for the Rangers, who are 11-0-1 in series since getting swept at Oakland in mid-May.

Perez (7-4) was working on a shutout before Bryce Brentz hit a solo drive with two outs in the sixth for his first major league homer.

Shin-Soo Choo, Ian Desmond, Nomar Mazara and Adrian Beltre opened Texas' three-run first with four straight singles. The last two drove in a run apiece, to go along with Rougned Odor's blooper to left against Clay Buchholz (3-8).

                ROYALS 6, ASTROS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ian Kennedy struck out 11 over seven innings and Kansas City snapped Houston's seven-game winning streak.

After Royals starters Edinson Volquez and Chris Young were roughed up in blowout losses in the first two games of the series, Kennedy (6-6) allowed one run and three hits with one walk.

Kendrys Morales hit a pair of solo homers for Kansas City, and Cheslor Cuthbert connected for a two-run shot. Lorenzo Cain had three of the Royals' 13 hits.

Doug Fister (8-4) lost for the first time since April 25. He gave up four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings, including three homers.

Evan Gattis hit a leadoff homer in the sixth for Houston.

                BRAVES 5, METS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman and Adonis Garcia homered, and Bud Norris threw seven scoreless innings to send Atlanta past New York.

Freeman had three hits and a walk, helping the Braves salvage a split of the four-game series.

Brandon Nimmo, one of New York's top prospects, made his major league debut and went 0 for 4 with a game-ending strikeout. The outfielder was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday.

Norris (3-7) allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked none. Arodys Vizcaino got one out for his 10th save.

Bartolo Colon (6-4) yielded one run and six hits in seven innings.

WHITE SOX 5, BLUE JAYS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale pitched eight innings of two-run ball to become the first 13-game winner in the majors, leading Chicago over Toronto.

Tim Anderson and J.B. Shuck homered to help the White Sox take two of three from the slumping Blue Jays, who have dropped five of seven. Chicago (38-38) returned to .500 with its fifth win in seven games.

Sale (13-2) allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked two in his fourth straight victory. David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save in 22 chances.

Troy Tulowitzki and Junior Lake homered for Toronto in the eighth. Marcus Stroman (6-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings.

                REDS 3, PADRES 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Anthony DeSclafani pitched eight innings and singled with the bases loaded, carrying Cincinnati past San Diego in the finale of the Reds' weekend dedicated to Pete Rose.

Until Sunday, the only thing missing from the hits king gala was a win. The Reds' top starter took care of that in front of Cincinnati's third straight sellout crowd.

DeSclafani (2-0) gave up five singles, struck out five and didn't allow a runner to reach second base. He also hit an RBI single in the sixth off Luis Perdomo (2-3).

Jay Bruce hit his 17th homer, and Tucker Barnhart doubled home a run as the Reds avoided a four-game sweep. Tony Cingrani earned his ninth save, completing Cincinnati's first shutout of the season.

                          June 27, 2016

Hottest team: Indians (9-0 past 9)

Cleveland looks for its 10th consecutive victory in an interleague series opener at Atlanta Monday. Trevor Bauer is on the bump for the Indians, and he hasn't suffered a loss in six starts dating back to May 21. Bauer has been solid overall with a 3.20 ERA this season in 17 appearances (11 starts), and he is even better on the road with a 2.84 ERA in eight outings (five starts). The Indians are 5-0 in their past five game against a right-handed starter, and they're also 4-1 in Bauer's past five outings. On the flip side, the Braves have won just two of their past 11 interleague games against a team with a winning record

                          Coldest team:
                          Rays (0-11 past 11)

The Tampa Bay Rays have been struggling tremendously, losers of 11 straight, including four in a row at home and five consecutive setbacks within the division. Perhaps they can get well against the Boston Red Sox, as they pay a visit to St. Petersburg. The Red Sox have won just once in their past six trips to Tropicana Field. Last time out it was Blake Snell spinning a quality start by allowing three runs - two earned - with seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in Cleveland last Tuesday. Tampa won two of three from Boston at Fenway Park in the first meeting between these rivals April 19-21.

                          Hottest pitcher
: Marco Estrada, Blue Jays (5-3, 2.70 ERA)

Estrada and the Jays head to Coors Field to open up an interleague series in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. Estrada has the temperament to withstand the power bats of the Rockies and the rarified air in Denver. Over the past month Estrada has a 3-1 record with a 2.60 ERA in five starts, holding the opposition to a .128 batting average over 34 2/3 innings with a sparkling 0.84 WHIP. The Rockies strike out 7.96 times per game, and Estrada has whiffed 26 batters over the past 26 2/3 innings in four June starts.

                          Coldest pitcher:
Francisco Liriano, Pirates (4-7, 5.17 ERA)

The Bucs have been hovering around the .500 mark, and they would likely be well above if Liriano was hitting his averages. Liriano has lost four straight decisions, and he has won just one of his past eight starts dating back to May 6. The Pirates have lost five straight starts with Liriano on the bull, and the Pirates have won just five of their past 18 games overall. They're also 0-5 in Liriano's past five outings against teams with a winning overall record.

                          Biggest UNDER run:
                          Braves (8-1 past nine)

The Braves open up an interleague series against the red-hot Indians Monday night at Turner Field. The under has cashed in eight of the past nine games for the Braves. The under has also cashed in four straight interleague games while going 6-0 in their past six against right-handed starting pitching. The under is also 4-0 in the past four outings by Indians SP Trevor Bauer, the opposing pitcher. In the past six meetings in Atlanta between these interleague clubs, the under is a perfect 6-0 and the under is 8-0-1 in the past nine meetings overall.

                          Biggest OVER run:
                          Phillies (5-1 past six)

Philadelphia has the worst run differential in the National League at minus-105, scoring 3.3 runs per game while allowing 4.7 runs per outing. On their current road trip they have picked up the pace offensively, averaging 6.0 runs per game while allowing 6.4 runs per outing. That has helped the over routinely cash. Vince Velasquez comes off the 15-day disabled list to start Monday's game in Arizona. He has allowed a total of 20 runs over the past 30 1/3 innings, so another over might be just around the corner.

Matchup to watch: Angels vs. Astros

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim host the Houston Astros Monday night as they look to turn things around. The Halos have won just one of their past seven games, and they're 1-4 in their past five against right-handed starting pitching. The Astros have been red hot, winning seven of their past eight games overall while posting a 4-1 record in their past five road outings against right-handed starting pitching. They turn to Collin McHugh to stay hot. The Astros are 5-1 in his past six outings, and 20-6 in his past 26 starts against American League West foes. Houston is also 5-0 in McHugh's past five assignments against the Angels, altthough Houston is just 7-15 in their past 22 trips to the Big A.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
Oakland and San Francisco might only be separated by 12 miles, but they're extremely far apart when they get together on the diamond. The Giants have dominated the series, winning five of the past six meetings while going 16-5 in their past 21 home dates against the Athletics. The A's are also just 2-7 in their past nine interleague games, and 1-4 in their past five interleague road outings while the Giants are 4-0 in their past four interleague games while posting a stellar 48-21 record in their past 69 interleague home games.

                          Biggest public favorite:
                          Cubs (-205) at Reds

                          Biggest public underdog:
                          Rangers (+130) at Yankees

                          Biggest line move:
Angels (+115 to -105) vs. Astros

                          • LEADING OFF: Tulo back in Colorado; Indians try to hang 10

                            June 27, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                            HOMECOMING

Toronto shortstop Troy Tulowitzki makes his first appearance at Coors Field since he was traded from the Rockies to the Blue Jays last July. Tulowitzki, who helped Colorado reach the 2007 World Series as a rookie, asked to be shipped to a contender, so his return likely will draw a mix of cheers and boos from Rockies fans.

                            BIG EAST

The top teams in the NL East square off when New York begins a three-game series at division-leading Washington. Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (8-2, 2.08 ERA) tries to win his seventh consecutive decision, while Joe Ross (6-4, 3.11 ERA) gets the ball for the Nationals in the opener of a 10-game homestand. It's the first appearance for Syndergaard since his right elbow flared up last Wednesday in a win over Kansas City. Tests came back fine, the Mets said.

                            HITLESS WONDER

Chicago Cubs ace Jake Arrieta (11-2, 1.74 ERA) returns to Cincinnati, where he threw a no-hitter April 21. Arrieta has a 0.24 ERA in five night starts this season, but is coming off a loss in his most recent outing against St. Louis. The banged-up Cubs (48-26) went 1-6 last week yet still own the best record in the majors.

                            SHOW-ME SOMETHING

St. Louis plays at Kansas City when the Missouri rivals open their latest I-70 series. Adam Wainwright (6-4) pitches for the Cardinals against Danny Duffy (2-1).

                            STREAKING

The AL Central-leading Indians go for their 10th straight win when they open a three-game series at lowly Atlanta. Corey Kluber (7-7, 3.59 ERA), coming off a three-hit shutout of Tampa Bay, pitches for Cleveland against rookie John Gant (1-2, 4.45).

                            SLIDING

Tampa Bay returns home after a winless road trip and tries to snap an 11-game losing streak in the opener of a three-game series against Boston. The Rays have been outscored 72-29 during their skid and yielded at least five runs in each game. They are 15-20 at Tropicana Field and one of four major league teams that has yet to win a homestand.
