With Windows XP unless your gaming or running another high memory application your computer is not going utilize memory about 512mg. If you computer is running slow with 512 there's other issue. You can add memory up the ass and it won't make a difference.

With Vista I recommend a minimum 2g of memory.

Thanks a ton guys. Great info from all and i used the info from frank and lsufan because they gave it to me 1st. I really appreciate it. That Spydoctor seemed to clean a ton of stuff up, along with the ccleaner and other stuff. A few things are weird now as some sites don't open like PayPal. I had to adjust the security and lower it a little to get into those sites. It seems to run slower than it used to at times too but all in all, it seems to be fixed and a ton of stress has been removed. Thanks again guys!

I agree 100% Norton is a pig. Uninstall it. Better download and run the Norton Removal tool.

Select your Norton version for the removal tool

        http://service1.symantec.com/Support...05033108162039

Use AVG in place of Norton

        www.avg.com

They have a free version. The free version does as good of a job with viruses as the paid version. The paid version comes with more bells and whistles.

DO NOT use more than one antivirus program. Using multiple Antivirus program does not offer more protection. It'll bring your system to a crawl.

So the newer ones with Vista hold more memory frank? I have an account at Dell and i'll be going there in the next few months and probably be buying a new one.

Spydoctor seems to be doing all the work right now but i'm afraid deleting Norton will leave me open for new viruses. If i have the Spydoctor frank, would i still want to add the avg?

IF you use Internet Explorer click on tools/internet options. Click on the privacy tab then click default. That'll reset IE cookies to it's default. Some malware change it.

Also, Click on the Advanced tab. Then click on Reset. That'll reset IE to it's default setting.

This should help with the sites you can't access.

As far as the computer running slow. As another user selected defrag your HD. Don't use the Windows defrag use JK Defrag. It's free and it's the best.

                http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/JkDefrag-3.36.zip

Your initial defrag might takes about an hour or more. After the initial defrag run it about once per week.

Report back how long the defrag too.

AVG and Norton are mostly for antivirus. The paid version of AVG includes Spyware protection.

Spyware Doctor is for Spyware only.

The paid version of AVG includes antivirus and antispyware.

Initially I suggest removing Norton. Download and install the free version of AVG. You can always upgrade to the paid version later. As LSU suggested shutdown Spyware Doctor. Then run weekly scans.

                  AVG Free Version:

                  http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...ntentAux;cloud

Again don't install AVG until after you uninstall/remove Norton

FYI I suggested Spyware Doctor because it's the best at removing infected machines. AVG paid version does a good job at protecting you from getting infected. But there's no program that'll offer 100% protection. NEVER EVER buy or install any antivrus or antispyware from a pop-up. They are syware. As you experienced they'll make your computer worse and fast.

I agree. There have been many times when frank and i did not see eye to eye on things here but it is nice to know he is still willing to help someone out in dire straits!

Very much appreciated and i do mean that.

                          4) now click on the startup tab and deselect all the items from the list which you don't want the computer to run on start up.
                          5) click on apply and then restart your computer.
Wayne, this is also a great tip. I modified tinman's advice a little

                          I removed step 3

I slightly modified step 4. Click on the startup tab. Deselect all. Click OK then reboot. Some items you can't deselect but Windows will reselect them.

After rebooting if you experience any problems like the inability to print we can always go back and reselect the required programs. This tip doesn't remove or cause any harm. It only prevents certain programs from starting when the computer starts.

Our opinions differ greatly. We are humans/brothers first. I'd never turn my back on someone in need.

I felt bad because on Monday I told you I'd help you out. I was in NY on vacation. I had to leave to meet a friend for dinner. I didn't want you to think I baled on you. After settling back in at work I got caught up in with this thread.

I tease my clients all the time when they bring me infected computer. "stay off the porn sites".

Then I direct them to www.redtube.com. You can watch your porn. It's streaming online video. Your computer won't get infected. There's no downloads.

There are a ton of things in that startup file. There is no deselect, there is a disable? You say disable all? ... meaning nothing starts up when starting the computer? My wife is there and she was going to do it but she got a little nervous. lol
