  • There are 16 things in the startup file. Most of which we have no clue what they are.

    • When you're satisfied your computer is running smoothly without any issues there's two more things I usually do.

      First, run Windows Disk Cleanup.

      1. Open My Computer
      2. Right Click on Local Disk C
      3. Click on Properties
      4. Click on the Disk Cleanup button (this step can take 5,10 minutes or much longer be patient)
      5. In the next Disk Cleanup windows deselect Compress Old Files (with the larger newer hard drives this isn't too important)
      6. Click on the More Options tab
      7. In the System Restore section click on the Clean up button.
      8. In the next window click on Yes

Some Spyware 'store' malicious files in the System Recovery. This process will remove all system recovery points except the last.

At a later period when the computer is running faster do another Disk cleanup including the Compress Old Files

        go ahead and disable all.

Don't be nervous. We can always re-enable them. All this does is stop these programs from starting when you start the computer.

            • Frank, I have a question.

I have Norton (Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition). I also have Spyware Doctor. I just updated Spyware Doctor and the new version has Spyware Doctor with Antivirus.

Now, I get an alert from Norton that "System Realtime Protection" is not enabled. I right click on the icon by my clock to turn it on, but it doesn't accept it. I open the program, go to configure, and "Realtime Protection" is checked as enabled.

Spyware Doctor is currently scanning my incoming and outgoing email.

I tried turning off and disabling Spyware Doctor, but I still can't get Norton back enabled and running as my primary Antivirus.

              Any suggestions buddy???

Exact same questions from me too jimmy. Norton doesn't seem to be loading up right now and the Spydoctor we have also says Spyware with Anti Virus. Same exact issues.

                    Try this:

                    1. Open MSCONFIG as explained above

                    2. In MSCONFIG click on Services tab

                    3. Check Hide All Microsoft Services.

                    4. Uncheck all PC Tools Services (as explained above this won't cause any problems with your computer)

                    5. Click OK

                    6. Reboot computer

Even though you shutdown Spyware Doctor the services are still running.

                    Let me know.

As I suggested above never use multiple Antivirus programs. Disabling the Spyware Doctor services might work. If it doesn't try updating Symantec virus definition files.

                      • Ok Frank ...

I did as you said ...

Spyware Doctor still opens in the system tray, but is disconnected. Norton is still disabled.

Live update run manually, but doesn't help my situation.

Did you try right mouse click on Spyware Doctor in the system tray then click Shutdown?

If you did uninstall Spyware Doctor. This should help pin point or eliminate SW Doctor as the cause.

Shutdown did not work. I will uninstall and see what happens.

                            • I uninstalled Spyware Doctor with no changes to Norton.

Windows security alert popped up in the system tray saying I have no Anti Virus protection.

                                I removed step 3

I slightly modified step 4. Click on the startup tab. Deselect all. Click OK then reboot. Some items you can't deselect but Windows will reselect them.

After rebooting if you experience any problems like the inability to print we can always go back and reselect the required programs. This tip doesn't remove or cause any harm. It only prevents certain programs from starting when the computer starts.

I believe I was the first to suggest this tip on using msconfig.
I said it was the key to batting this certain issue. I know because a Polling PC for the finance dept. at my work was infected by this.
So a reformat was definitely not an option.
The reason you use msconfig is to keep this malicious pest from starting up and slowing your system down.
No matter if you were running and cleaning up without stopping it first it will continue to reside and slow down your system and keep regenerating.

                                1* 9-4
                                total = 16-6-1
