I might have the king of the all-time worst losses. Last season's NBA playoffs. Lakers at Spurs. For some reason, I lose my mind and decide to take San Antonio on the money line. I did not want to lay 5 in the game, but I did not think that the Spurs would lose. Logic that sounded GREAT, ESPECIALLY after the miracle Duncan shot from the top of the key to seemingly give me the W. Derrick Fisher of course changed all of that, leading to a devastating loss on one of the most amazing endings in NBA playoff history. I really took it up the arse in that one, the juice was heavy and the depression lasted a solid week! I have been around long enough to write a BOOK about war stories, and EZ - I lost that very same game on Monday Night Football but my story is worse......

A WEEK EARLIER in that same season I also had Philadelphia +9 and Over 40 at Dallas, a game that was decided on a botched FG in the final seconds that WOULD have given Philly the outright win AND sent the game over the total (clicking a HUGE two team reverse I had that night with Philly/Over in addition to very large straight wagers on both the side and total). As it turned out, Tommy Hutton dropped the snap, the Eagles lost, the game stayed under the total - I split instead of winning both and a week later almost killed myself after losing an equally bizarre game in Jacksonville in the final seconds (as EZ so painfully described). Two weeks in a row, thousands of dollars off the board and a man on the verge of a psychological collapse!......

All of this would just be peachy if I didn't have about a thousand others (like Duke vs Maryland in last year's ACC tourney up 10-13/whatever, with under a minute left AGAIN with the money line and AGAIN not enough, or Vandy/NC State NCAA Tourney last season where NC State blew a 13 point lead with 2 minutes left, or a college football game USC/UCLA in the first season of college OT where my 10 point underdog was STILL NOT ENOUGH even in OT thanks to a 90 yard fumble return for a TD in the 2nd OT AFTER the winning team had already scored first then giving USC a 13 point win to screw me up the a$$ blah blah blah). I could go on all night but the Fisher dagger and the 2 NFL bizarre kick endings in 1997-98 are what really stand out in my mind, probably because of the colon cleansing I took at the hands of those 3 losses!

    To better times lol

        My worst loss

Ok I'm sober enough to tell you about my worst loss in history ( I already told you about my greatest win in the other thread )

15 years ago - college football - Ivy league - Yale at Harvard. I had Harvard at home laying 2 1/2 for $250 , ( At that time I didn't realize the value of a 1/2 point )

Harvard was losing the entire game until the very last play when they got some busted - ass touchdown with NO time remaining on the clock to put them up by 2 points, I sweated the entire game - believe me.

So now I'm all ecstatic figuring with the point after TD Harvard wins by 3 and I cover.

All of a sudden I see ALL the Harvard fans rushing on to the field and tearing down the goal posts.

The refs trot off the field because the game is over and who cares about the extra point. I fucking care ... that's who !!!

        Now that's a tough beat.

I also remember that shortly after that game Ivy League Football was taken off the board altogether.

I vowed that after that game I would never lose another by 1/2 point and I never have since. Whenever I negotiate with a book I always get the 1/2 point as a standard deal or I walk. You'd be surprised how accomodating books are for your action. All you have to do is ask. If they refuse, screw them and find someone else and you will be successful. At the end of any given year that 1/2 point will turn 20 - 30 losses into pushes. A HUGE difference in our net.

coverboy, I have a half point story that is equally as painful. I was actually AT a game in 1990-91 Philadelphia at Cleveland. I laid 2.5 with the Eagles that day (again not realizing the value of the precious half point) and saw Cleveland take a 23-0 lead at Municipal Stadium (in an era when a 23-0 lead seemed like 40-0 these days). Jim McMahon led the Eagles all the way back, and in a miraculous 4th quarter comeback, they scored on the last play of the game (TD to Calvin Williams) to win the game! I was overwhelmed with emotion (as I had a grand on Philly -2.5). In the midst of my celebration, Roger FING Ruzek missed the damn extra point, the Eagles won 32-30 and at that very moment I first experienced the feeling that I might rather be dead. I may live until I am 90, and I will never get over that loss. I will take it with me to the grave and into eternity beyond!

DEATH TO ALL HALF POINT LOSSES (like you I wager on FLAT NUMBERS ONLY and without question, because of that life changing moment in time in Cleveland Municipal Stadium on a 10 degree day that saw the Southern Comfort flowing and the half point thousand dollar losses flying!)......

          Again, to better times lol

I just thought of a second one, and this one really rankled me.
It happened 5 or 6 years ago between Wash. and Dallas. The total for game was around 41, and I had the over.
The score I believe at the half was 38-0;would you believe there was ZERO scoring in second half and I lost!
I may not remember the exact score, but I know I needed just 3 points in the second half for a push and didn't get them.
It wasn't a big bet, but that is beside the point.

WayneChung - Hey buddy - many years ago I would certainly have taken you up on your offer but now I'm pushing 50 and I'm just plain old high on life... and once in a while ... alcohol. Thanks anyway for considering me cool enough to join you. Just please keep a good balance in your life so you can appreciate the highs.

OBE - Oh God do I feel your pain, brother. And I remember that UCLA - USC game vividly. Plummer's last year before turning pro ... Keith Jackson ( the best !!! ) did the game on ABC. Now THAT was one tough beat that you bought the dog.

                  robin ventura , need i say more... i had a $ 300.00
2 team parlay with the mets(playoff game vs braves) and the over(8.5)... bases loaded 3-3 game i think it was bottom of the 10th and he hits a grand slam that turned into a single after that asshole todd pratt led the stampede after he rounded first never letting him touch home plate... the only thing that makes me feel a little better is i saw a special on hbo about this guy who lost 25k on the over....how can you lose by a guy not touching home plate on a home run?? unreal ,to think people out there who had the under collected because a guy got tackled rounding first....

I don't know if this was my worst ever but the worst this year. I had the under 152 in the florida st. wake game. Florida st. was up 75-72 and got fouled the guy misses both free throws. Then with 3 sec left wake nails a three to tie it but he gets fouled so wake can win it 76-75 and keep it under. At this time wake had a 40 something free throw streak intact and he misses to send it to ot.

I was all over UCONN last year in the tornament against DUKE, $550. I'm talking to a good friend on the phone and he says "Don't worry you're GOLD". Duhon hits the shot, with coach K in the backgroung already shaking hands. I let out a scream, my dad came running into the room he thought i had a heart attack.

But that's not the worst, had my house raided about five years ago by the local sheriff depo. They took $3500cash and $4500 in assets, and 1 year of time. Now that's a loss.

Mine comes off a football pool....$100.00 a square, 1 winner $10,000.00 dollars...To give you and idea of what 10G was worth in the days when football (NFL) ganes stayed tied...had the #'s 4-4...Eagles go up on Saints 14-7---Saints come back and score with a few seconds left...Score now 14-13...Looking for the extra point--a guy named "Dempsey"--hall of famer--missing toes and all--missed, yes missed the extra point...Final score 14-13---oh by the way--the guy who won it was Senator Brady (Louisiana) who was already a millionmare...That was the most heartbreaking loss of my career....

Don't make me go Cajun on your Ass!

                              Gold Vike- Worst Loss Topic

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say,
"All losses are a little jab to the stomach."

Let's see...it was 3-4 years ago. The Browns are playing at the Bears. I have the Browns catching +4. This game is a HUGE side play for me with 2 four team parlays an 2 three teamers still open. Needless to say... all of these plays are riding on the Browns.
The Browns are up by 14 with less than 2 minutes remaining.
The Bears score a TD for 7. They kick an onside kick...which they recover. With seconds remaining..the Bears score another TD and make the extra point.
We go to overtime. You guessed it...the Bears score a rare passing TD to win by six and cover the 4 in OT.

Did I mention the coffetable I put through my new TV?

                              Thanks for the therapy.
