  • SEC Notebook - Week 2
    September 7, 2018
    By Brian Edwards

My Bookie.ag updated its odds to win the SEC Championship Game this week, with Alabama listed as the -140 ‘chalk.’ The next-shortest odds belonged to Georgia (+150), Auburn (+550) and the Gators, who saw their odds drastically reduced after an impressive debut to the Dan Mullen Era.

The rest of the odds look like this: LSU (12/1), Mississippi St. (12/1), Texas A&M (12/1), South Carolina (14/1), Missouri (25/1), Tennessee (35/1), Arkansas (55/1), Ole Miss (75/1), Kentucky (100/1) and Vanderbilt (500/1). Note: Ole Miss is currently ineligible for the SEC Championship Game and a bowl bid, but the school has filed an appeal that should be ruled on soon and isn’t expected to be granted.

The SEC West was a perfect 7-0 both straight up and against the spread in Week 1, covering the closing number by an average of 10 points per game. The lone outright loser in the league was Tennessee in its loss to West Virginia up in Charlotte. The SEC went 13-1 SU and 11-3 ATS overall.

Now let’s look at the Week 2 action around the SEC…

    **Mississippi State at Kansas State**

-- As of early Friday night, most books had Mississippi State (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) installed as a seven-point road favorite with a total of 53.5. The Bulldogs opened as 8.5-point ‘chalk’ at most spots and the number moved up to 9.5 on Monday. Some shops got as high as 10, but the line starting steadily dropping Thursday afternoon. It was down to 8.5 by lunch on Friday and moved to seven shortly after 5:00 p.m. Eastern. The total opened at 54 points. The Wildcats were +230 on the money line (risk $100 to win $230).

-- Joe Moorhead’s debut came without star QB Nick Fitzgerald, the senior who was serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules back in March. This development was no help for Stephen F. Austin, the victim of a 63-6 beatdown from MSU in Starkville last Saturday. The Bulldogs took the cash as 47.5-point favorites. Fitzgerald is still undoubtedly the starter, but there’s no question that his heir apparent, true sophomore Keytaon Thompson, is someone who can win ballgames for you if Fitzgerald gets injured Thompson threw for 364 yards and five TDs without an interception against the Lumberjacks, in addition to rushing for a team-best 109 yards and two TDs on only 10 carries.

-- MSU senior RB Aeris Williams will be fresh for KSU. He only had to carry the ball twice last week for 15 yards. Williams ran for 1,107 yards and six TDs with a 4.7 yards-per-carry average in 2017.

-- Kansas State had a shaky season debut last week, beating South Dakota 27-24 thanks to 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to recover from a 24-12 deficit. With 12:12 remaining, the Wildcats got an 85-yard punt return for a TD by Isaiah Zuber to trim the deficit to 24-19. Then with 7:21 left, Zuber hauled in a 10-yard TD reception from QB Skylar Thompson. Bill Snyder’s club was minus four in the turnover department. Junior RB Alex Barnes rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries. Thompson completed 8-of-14 throws for 61 yards and one TD with one interception. He also ran for 58 yards on 11 carries, while QB Alex Delton produced 78 rushing yards on 12 totes. Delton connected on just 5-of-14 passes for 91 yards and zero TDs with one pick.

-- Kansas State last hosted an SEC team in 2014 when fifth-ranked Auburn came to Manhattan as a 7.5-point road favorite. The Wildcats dropped a 20-14 heartbreaker on that night. They’re winless in a pair of encounters with MSU, but the last meeting was way back in 1977.

-- Kansas State is 12-6 ATS as home underdog during Snyder’s second tour of duty at the school that dates back to 2009.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for noon Eastern on ESPN.

    **Arkansas State at Alabama**

-- As of early Friday evening, most betting shops had Alabama (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) listed as a 36-point favorite with a total of 65.5.

-- Alabama is 4-13 ATS in its past 17 games as a favorite of 35 points or more. Since 2010, the Crimson Tide is 5-15-1 ATS in 21 games as a ‘chalk’ of 25.5 points or more versus non-conference opponents. Also, they’re 6-15-1 ATS when favored by 28.5 points or more since 2012.

-- Nick Saban’s squad trounced Louisville 51-14 as a 24-point favorite at Camping World Stadium in Orlando last Saturday night. The 65 combined points elevated ‘over’ the 60-point total thanks to a U of L touchdown with 1:55 remaining. Tua Tagovailoa completed 12-of-16 throws for 227 yards and two TDs without an interception. He also had 26 rushing yards and one TD on five carries. Jerry Jeudy had four receptions for 64 yards and a pair of TDs. The Tide covered for first quarter bets (-7) and first-half wagers (-14).

-- Arkansas State is 10-7 ATS in its past 17 games as a double-digit underdog. During Blake Anderson’s tenure, the Red Wolves are 4-6 ATS in 10 games as road ‘dogs.

-- Anderson’s team opened the season with a 48-21 non-covering victory over SE Missouri St. as a 32-point home favorite. The Red Wolves were led by senior QB Justice Hansen, who began his career as a four-star recruit at Oklahoma. Hansen completed 26 passes on 36 attempts for 423 yards and six TDs with one interception last week. He also ran for 31 yards on five carries. True freshman RB Marcel Murray had a team-high 54 rushing yards on 10 carries and also had two catches for 75 yards and one TD.

-- Hansen was the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 when he threw for 3,967 yards with a 37/16 TD-INT ratio. He also produced 665 yards rushing yards (before subtracting 243 yards from sacks) and seven TDs. The Red Wolves finished 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS last year, dropping a 35-30 decision to Middle Tennessee as 5.5-point underdogs at the Camellia Bowl. They returned seven starters on offense and five on defense.

-- Arkansas State is 4-6 ATS in 10 games as a road underdog during Anderson’s tenure.

-- ESPN2 will have the broadcast at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

    **Georgia at South Carolina**

-- Here’s your Upset Alert that could have national ramifications in Week 2. South Carolina (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) is 55-16 SU at Williams-Brice Stadium over the past decade. The Gamecocks are 3-2 ATS in five games as home underdogs during Will Muschamp’s three-year tenure.

-- As of Friday night, most books had Georgia (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) favored by 10 points with a total of 56. The Gamecocks were in the +300 neighborhood to win outright.

-- Muschamp’s team downed Coastal Carolina 49-15 as a 30.5-point home favorite in last week’s opener in Columbia. The Gamecocks outgained the Chanticleers 561-243 in total offense. Junior signal caller Jake Bentley, who is poised to make his 22nd career start Saturday, was sharp vs. Coastal Carolina. He completed 22-of-29 passes for 250 yards and four TDs without an interception. Senior WR Deebo Samuel, who had scored six TDs before going down with a season-ending injury (broken leg) in Week 3 last year vs. Kentucky, made a triumphant return to the field. Samuel had seven receptions for 56 yards and one TD, and he also an 11-yard run and 45 yards on a pair of kick returns. Rico Dowdle, one of three veteran RBs on the USC roster, had a 27-yard TD catch and rushed for a team-best 105 yards and one TD on 15 carries. Ty’Son Williams had 82 rushing yards and one TD on 11 totes, while Shi Smith had four catches for 63 yards. Bryan Edwards added four grabs for 53 yards and one TD.

-- UGA took it to Austin Peay in a 45-0 non-covering win as a 48.5-point home ‘chalk’ last week in Athens. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 508-152 advantage in total yards. Jake Fromm connected on 12-of-16 passes for 157 yards and two TDs without an interception. Justin Fields, a true freshman who was a decorated five-star recruit, completed 7-of-8 throws for 63 yards and one TD without an interception. Fields rushed for 33 yards on three attempts. Demetris Robertson, the former 5-star recruit out of Savannah who signed with California out of high school in 2016, had an impressive UGA debut despite getting only one touch. That touch came in the form of a 72-yard TD run.

-- UGA has compiled a 5-2 spread record in seven games as a road favorite on Kirby Smart’s watch.

-- UGA senior WR Terry Godwin missed the season opener due to a calf injury, but he’s been upgraded to ‘probable’ at USC. Godwin had 38 receptions for 639 yards and six TDs last year.

-- Georgia is 50-18-2 in the all-time series with three consecutive victories, including last year’s non-covering 24-10 win as a 23.5-point home favorite. Gamblers should keep in mind that Samuel wasn’t on the field that day, nor was LB Bryson Allen-Williams, who is now healthy.

-- CBS will provide the telecast at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

    **Kentucky at Florida**

-- As of early Friday night, most betting shops had Florida installed as a 13.5-point favorite with a total of 51. The Wildcats, who haven’t tasted a victory in Gainesville since 1979, were +425 to win outright.

-- Dan Mullen’s return to Gainesville was a successful one last Saturday night at The Swamp, where UF cruised to a 53-6 win over Charleston Southern as a 43-point home favorite. Third-year sophomore QB Feleipe Franks enjoyed the best performance of his career, completing 16-of-24 passes for 219 yards and five TDs without an interception. The Gators led 38-0 at halftime, rushed for 203 yards on 39 attempts (5.2 YPC) and committed only three penalties for 20 yards. Van Jefferson, a former 5-star recruit to Ole Miss, had four receptions for 34 yards and two TDs. Another former 5-star recruit who transferred to UF from Ohio St., Trevon Grimes, had three catches for 50 yards and one TD.

-- Florida has won 31 straight games over Kentucky, including last year’s improbable 28-27 comeback victory as a 2.5-point road favorite. UF scored twice on plays when the Wildcats failed to put a defender on the WR split out wide. The first instance came late in the second half on fourth-and-three play at about midfield. The second came on third and goal (out of a timeout!) in the final minute when Luke Del Rio found Freddie Swain for a short TD pass. The ‘Cats missed a potential game-winning field goal from 56 yards out on the game’s final play.

-- Kentucky failed to cover the number in its 35-20 season-opening win over Central Michigan as a 17-point home favorite. The 55 combined points went ‘over’ the 50.5-point total on a four-yard TD run by UK’s Asim Rose on the first play of the final stanza. Terry Wilson, UK’s starting QB who is a juco transfer that originally signed with Oregon in the 2016 class, committed three turnovers and struggled mightily. He completed 11-of-18 throws for merely 78 yards without a TD and two interceptions. Wilson rushed nine times for 38 yards. Benny Snell led UK with 125 rushing yards and two TDs on 20 carries.

-- UF smashed UK by a 45-7 count in the last encounter two years ago in Gainesville.

-- Kentucky owns an 11-11 spread record in 22 games as a road underdog during Mark Stoops’s six-year tenure.

-- UK is Mississippi State’s annual rivalry game with an SEC East opponent. Mullen went 8-1 against the ‘Cats during his nine-year tenure in Starkville.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Vanderbilt will play host to Nevada from out of the Mountain West Conference at noon Eastern on the SEC Network. As of Friday night, most books had the Commodores favored by 10 points with a total of 61. The Wolf Pack was +300 on the money line. Vandy thumped Middle Tennessee by a 35-7 count as a three-point home favorite in last week’s opener. Kyle Shurmur threw for 170 yards and two TDs without an interception to pace the ‘Dores, who took the lead for good early in the second quarter on a three-yard scoop-and-score fumble return by Dare Odeyingbo. The 42 combined points dropped ‘under’ the 56.5-point total, as the Vandy defense held Brent Stockstill to only 178 passing yards. Nevada dealt out woodshed treatment to Portland St. this past Friday night, coasting to a 72-19 victory as a 28-point home ‘chalk.’ The Wolf Pack is winless in four previous trips into SEC country during its program’s history.

-- As of Friday night, most spots had Missouri (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) listed as a 19.5-point home favorite vs. Wyoming. The total was 52 for this 7:00 p.m. Eastern showdown on ESPNU. Barry Odom’s club smashed UT-Martin 51-14 as a 35.5-point home favorite in Week 1. Senior QB Drew Lock connected on 19-of-25 passes for 289 yards and four TDs without an interception. The Tigers will be without WR Richaud Floyd, who is recovering from a leg injury that’ll keep him out until at least late September. Floyd had 14 catches for 170 yards and two TDs last year. He’s most known for his special-team talents, averaging 19.8 yards per punt return with two TDs in 2017. Wyoming opened the season with a 29-7 win at New Mexico State, but the Cowboys lost a 41-19 decision to Washington St. last week as 3.5-point home underdogs. They led 16-13 at intermission but were outscored 21-0 by the Cougars in the fourth quarter.

-- In a third SEC-MWC showdown on Saturday’s docket, Arkansas travels to Ft. Collins to take on Colorado State as a 13.5-point road favorite. The total was 70 as of Friday night, while the Rams were +425 to win outright. The Razorbacks pushed past Eastern Illinois 55-20 as 35-point home favorites in Chad Morris’s debut as head coach. Ty Storey was the catalyst, completing 12-of-17 throws for 261 yards and three TDs without an interception. He also ran for 15 yards and one score on three attempts. Mike Bobo’s team is off to a terrible start, losing its opener to Hawaii 43-34 as a 17-point home ‘chalk’ before getting demolished by Colorado 45-13 in Denver last weekend. As a home underdog on Bobo’s watch, CSU has compiled a 3-3 spread record. The CBS Sports College Network will have the broadcast at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

-- Ole Miss went to Houston and captured a 47-27 win over Texas Tech in a pick ‘em affair last Saturday. I cashed an ‘over’ 66.5 ticket when the 74 combined points jumped above the number. The Rebels will welcome FCS foe Southern Illinois to Oxford for a 4:00 p.m. Eastern kick on the SEC Network. They were favored by 30 points at a few offshores on Friday night. The Salukis won a 49-10 decision at Murray State as 16-point road favorites last Thursday night. They faced one FBS opponent last season, losing 44-31 at Memphis.

-- LSU is on a short week after beating up on Miami 33-17 as a three-point underdog in Sunday night’s showdown at Jerry World in Arlington, TX. The game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Joe Burrow, the new starting QB who has two years of eligibility remaining after coming to Baton Rouge as a grad transfer from Ohio St., didn’t have flashy numbers against the Hurricanes. But that’s only because the Tigers got out to such a big lead early that the passing game wasn’t really needed. Nevertheless, Burrow certainly passed “my eye test’ with flying colors. Ed Orgeron’s team will host SE Louisiana at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Tigers were favored by 40.5 points at a couple of offshore shops Friday night.

-- Tennessee will take on East Tennessee St. at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network. The Buccaneers are coached by former Phil Fulmer assistant Randy Sanders, who played at UT and was recently on staffs at FSU and Kentucky. The Volunteers, who lost 40-14 to West Virginia as 10-point underdogs in Jeremy Pruitt’s HC debut in Charlotte, were favored by 37.5 point at a few offshores Friday night.

                  — Florida State (-3.5) @ Syracuse

“The only thing that I thought was weird, when we came back in the second time … we’d been waiting for an hour, maybe hour and a half, and I just saw all these Mission BBQ boxes out. And I’m going, ‘We’re playing a game.’ I think it was 5 o’clock. It was crazy, considering our guys had been in there and had their pregame meal at 10.”

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                  13) IMG Academy is a prep school in Florida that specializes in sports training.

Of the 130 Division I-A football teams this fall, five starting QB’s are IMG graduates:

                  — Zack Annexstad, Minnesota
                  — Deondre Francois, Florida State
                  — Kellen Mond, Texas A&M
                  — Shea Patterson, Michigan
                  — Art Sitkowski, Rutgers

I’d say that is impressive for a high school, but IMG is no ordinary high school; its a factory for creating high-level athletes, which they do very well.

                  12) So I’m in line at the bank Friday and a guy in front of me is in line, holding a fishing pole; he gets to the teller’s window and puts the pole on the counter, while he gets a wad of cash.

Best that I know, and I’ve lived here my whole life, the closest body of water where fishing is possible is two miles away. Maybe he needed the cash for a Uber to get to the pond.

                  11) Then I go up the road for lunch, as I walk into the bar, one of the waiters compliments my sneakers, an old (but rarely worn) pair of Nikes that I recently found buried under a pile of stuff (not much gets thrown out at Armadillo World HQ).

Turns out this person knew from looking at my sneakers that they were made in 2005, and that I had taken good care of them. Not really, I just misplaced them and forgot about them, but they are still very comfortable, 13 years later.

                  10) Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but Washington Nationals’ teenager Juan Soto has batted cleanup in eight games this season; he is the first teenager to bat cleanup in a major league game since Houston’s Cesar Cedeno, in 1970.

                  9) Basketball Hall of Fame does their induction weekend on first week of the NFL season, which means it gets totally overlooked; too bad. Wouldn’t late August be a better time?

                  8) Roommates in their college days at LSU: Phillies P Aaron Nola, Astros 3B Alex Bregman. Couple of All-Stars now.

                  7) Phillies are fading down the stretch; is it because their front office has lousy people skills? Few weeks ago, they sent starting pitcher Zach Eflin down to AAA for 10 days, simply because they could do that, keep him in turn because of a doubleheader, then bring him back after ten days. It cost Eflin $20,000 and nine days of major league service time.

Since that happened, Eflin is 1-3, 9.26 in five starts.

                  6) We talked last week about the two Detroit Tigers’ TV announcers who got into a scuffle in the TV booth after the game Tuesday; turns out they’ve both been suspended for the rest of the season. Fact of the matter is, I would fire both of them, since they’re not very good anyway.

                  5) Alabama QB Jalen Hurts will likely redshirt this season; thanks to a new NCAA rule, Hurts can play in four games this season and still redshirt.

Not sure how that changes anything, since he and Tua Tagovailoa would both still at Alabama next year, but I guess Hurts could stay five years and start again when he is a 5th-year senior, after Tagovailoa graduates, unless Alabama recruits a younger QB in 2020 to start this mess all over again.

                  4) Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor is now defensive coordinator at St Thomas Aquinas HS down in Florida, one of the better high school programs in the Sunshine State.

                  3) There are 3,123 entrants in the Westgate SuperContest; at $1,500 a pop, that means the prize pool is a cool $4,684,500. Whoever wins will bank over a million bucks.

That said, 19 entrants didn’t put picks in for Week 1- at $1,500 a pop, thats $28,500 down the proverbial drain.

                  2) After returning from his injury Sunday night, Aaron Rodgers was 17-23 for 273 yards, three TDs; he was 3-7 for 13 yards before the injury. Sometimes life makes no sense.

                  1) When Eastern Michigan upset Purdue 20-19 Saturday, it was only their second win in 40 football games against Big 14 opponents.

                    • Books capture Week 1 win
                      September 10, 2018
                      By Micah Roberts

Aaron Rodgers got hurt, Ryan Fitzpatrick had a career day and the Browns didn't lose. The end result for Las Vegas sports books was a winning day for all to kick off Week 1 of the NFL season.

"The day went well, we had a good morning, but the afternoon games hit us a little bit," said MGM Resorts sports book hub manager Jeff Stoneback. "The public was all over the Saints, so the Bucs winning outright was our biggest win of the day. But we had a guy with deep pockets, a casino player, that bet the Panthers-Cowboys game Under a couple of times."

The Panthers (-3) won a 16-8 home match against the Cowboys, who were playing without All-Pro center Travis Frederick, keeping the total 'under' 42 total points. The Buccaneers 48-40 win at New Orleans was the largest total ever scored in an NFL Week 1 game, and it was also the biggest underdog of the week to win outright among the four that did so on Sunday.

"Wow, Fitzpatrick looked awfully sharp today, without a doubt," said South Point sports book director Chris Andrews.

Fitzpatrick, a journeyman from Harvard, had a career day with 417 yards and four passing touchdowns and also had a rushing TD. Who had him on their fantasy roster? Not me. He was filling in for Jameis Winston who was serving a three-game suspension for groping an Uber driver in Scottsdale back in 2016. Winston is the same guy who stole crab legs from a Tallahassee grocery store and was also accused of rape by a Florida State student. The Bucs straight-up win paid a city-high of +425 at Boyd Gaming properties.

The next biggest decision was the Browns 21-21 tie at home against the bully of the NFC North Pittsburgh, who dropped from a seven-point road favorite back in April to -3.5 by kickoff.

"The public bet the Steelers a bunch so it helped us minimize the sharp wagers we had taken on the Browns since we first posted the number," Stoneback said. "They were even taking +3.5 today. We ended up closing Steelers -3.5, +105."

The Browns went winless last season and are 1-31 the past two seasons (8-24 against the spread), but they played inspired football late in the game and that defense is going to make noise this season. They were 10/1 to win the division at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook before wagering cutoff on it.

While the Browns decision worked well for the house, the biggest loss at most shops was the Ravens 47-3 win, easily covering the 7.5-point spread against the hapless Bills who started Nathan Peterman at QB that posted an obscene 0.0 QB rating.

"We got a little back with the Bills at +9 and we jacked up the money-line as well to entice and get some money back, but we still lost big on the Ravens," said Andrews.

Joe Flacco tossed three TD passes in the win and it seemed every bettor had the Ravens on their parlays.

"The Ravens and Vikings were no good," said CG Technology risk manager Jason Simbal. "But everything else was okay, or good. Our best games were the Chiefs and Bucs."

The Vikings (-6) held on to win 24-16 against the 49ers handing Jimmy Garoppolo his first loss as an NFL starter. The Chiefs (+3.5) routed the Chargers, 38-28, in what looked like a home game for KC in Carson, California.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the day was just how lousy the Cardinals (-2) were, or maybe how good the Redskins were, in Washington's 24-6 win.

"I didn't see a lot of the game, but the Redskins stat sheet looked impressive and we needed them because wise-guys came in late on Arizona," said Andrews who closed Arizona -2 after being -1 for the last five months. William Hill closed at a city high of -2.5.

By the way, the South Point is decked out for the NASCAR race they're sponsoring this weekend, the first time Las Vegas Motor Speedway is hosting a Cup Series date in the fall. Two races this season and beyond. Woo-hoo, the South Point 400, drop the green flag already.

As far as the Cardinals point-spread rating going southward, Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook director Ed Salmons said he immediately dropped the Cards rating two points and pointed out how tough their road schedule was. They play at the Rams next week. I could make an argument that the Cards rating should drop four points.

Arizona had 24 new players on their roster, including a new quarterback, as well as a new head coach with a new a new offensive scheme headed up by Tim Tebow's old offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. The Cards possessed the ball only 21 minutes and looked as if they deserved to be rated on the bottom of the swamp with Buffalo. Hello Josh Rosen! Two weeks?

William Hill's Nick Bogdanovich 100-plus books across the country said their books did okay and a Bears cover would enhance their standing on the day.

It happened. The Packers (-7) won 24-23, but the Bears covered after being up 20-0 when Aaron Rodgers went down with an early injury. He didn't play the first half. But then he did an epic 'Wes Unfeld returns to the court moment' and stormed them back for the Packers ninth win of the past 10 meetings with Chicago. More details to come on the Rodgers injury, but in the second half, he was poetry in motion writing an amazing chapter of his 'Hall of Fame' career.

Stratosphere sports book director Ed Malinowski was in the same boat needing the Bears to come up with a cover and the 'under' to better an already good day.

"We're up a little bit going into the late game," said Andrews just prior tokickoff. "We need either a Packers blowout of a Bears win to offset a lot of teaser risk. Parlay and teaser risk is pretty large with the Packers."

It turned out being all-way teaser win which surely had a negative effect everywhere. It alsomiddledthe total which had dropped to 46.5 at a few shops.

The books also got a nice bump to Week 1 with the Thursday night game.

"Thursday went well for us," Stoneback said of the Eagles 18-12 opening night win. "We closed the Falcons -1 after opening the Eagles -4."

Outside of Fitzpatrick and Rodgers, I think the thing that stuck with me most in Week 1 was Von Miller sacking Russell Wilson three times, Patrick Mahomes proving me wrong with his four TD passes, James Connor being just as good as Le'Veon Bell might have, and the Jaguars defense still being the best. The Redskins have something cooking and the Panthers also had a new vibe of urgency.

It was a great NFL Sunday, welcome back football!

                        • Week 2 Rewind
                          Brian Edwards

Georgia stole the show in Week 2 by going on the road and winning 41-17 at South Carolina as an 8.5-point road favorite. UGA raced out to a 14-0 lead before the crowd could get comfortable in their seats.

On a third-and-seven play on USC’s opening drive, junior quarterback Jake Bentley hit junior RB Rico Dowdle in the hands with a pass that was going to come up short of the first-down marker. But Dowdle couldn’t handle the throw, which went through his hands and hit off his shoulder pads along the sidelines.

The ball bounced off Dowdle’s pads into the air and was caught by Deandre Baker, who returned the interception 56 yards to the fringe of the end zone. Baker then pulled a DeSean Jackson (circa MNF at Dallas when he was with the Eagles) and dropped the ball in celebration before he was across the plane of the end zone.

Fortunately for Baker, Juwan Taylor saw his teammates’ potentially crucial mistake and jumped on the ball to get credit for the TD. Two players later on a third-and-eight play, Bentley threw to Dowdle again. And once more, he dropped the pass, this time for what would’ve been a first-down conversion.

UGA promptly drove down the field in four plays and capped the drive with a D’Andre Swift TD run to silence the crowd and take a 14-0 advantage. To its credit, Will Muschamp’s team answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive to trim the deficit to 14-7. Deebo Samuel found Bryan Edwards for a 13-yard TD pass off a gadget play.

The teams would trade field goals and USC was on the move and into UGA territory late in the second quarter. During that drive, it started to seem as if the Gamecocks might’ve taken Georgia’s best punch, only to weather that storm, and might be on the cusp of getting even just before intermission.

Well, not so much. The Gamecocks’ drive would stall on the fringe of field-goal range, and then UGA’s two-minute offense produced a field goal before halftime for a 20-10 lead. Georgia received to start the second half and produced a TD drive. Then after a defensive stop, UGA would score again to go ahead 34-10 and the outcome was no longer in doubt early in the third quarter.

Jimbo Fisher’s rebuilding job at Texas A&M might not take long. The Aggies certainly looked the part Saturday night in front of an electric crowd at Kyle Field, where they played host to Clemson, a program that’s been to the College Football Playoffs for three straight seasons.

The Tigers were able to get on the airplane to go back home unscathed, but they had to dodge a serious bullet in College Station. Dabo Swinney’s club won a 28-26 decision, but Texas A&M easily took the cash as a 12-point home underdog. The 54 combined points inched ‘over’ the 50.5-point total in the final minute.

Trailing 28-13 going into the fourth quarter, the Aggies made it a one-possession game when Kellen Mond found Quartney Davis for a 14-yard scoring strike with 14:07 remaining. With 46 seconds left, Mond avoided pressure and scrambled to his left and then zipped a dart high into traffic, and Kendrick Rogers elevated to make a spectacular TD grab. However, the two-point conversion failed and the onside kick was unsuccessful.

As gut-wrenching as the defeat was, Fisher had to feel great about producing 501 yards of total offense (compared to Clemson’s 413 yards) against one of the nation’s best defenses. Mond threw for 430 yards and three TDs without an interception. Rogers had seven receptions for 120 yards and two TDs.

Clemson’s Kelly Bryant threw for 205 yards and one TD without an interception. He also ran for a team-best 54 yards and one TD.

Stanford captured a 17-3 win over USC as a five-point home favorite. After being shut down by San Diego State’s defense in a 31-10 season opening win, senior RB Bryce Love rushed for 136 yards and one TD on 22 attempts. TE Kaden Smith had four catches for 77 yards for the Cardinal, which avenged a pair of losses to the Trojans last year.

Kentucky ended the longest active losing streak in an FBS rivalry when it won a 27-16 decision at Florida. The Wildcats had lost 31 straight games to the Gators and hadn’t won in Gainesville since 1979.

UK senior RB Benny Snell gashed the UF defense for 175 rushing yards on 27 carries. QB Terry Wilson ran for 105 yards and one TD on 10 attempts, in addition to completing 11-of-16 passes for 151 yards and two TDs with one interception. The ‘Cats won outright as 13.5-point road underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a +425 payout (paid $425 on $100 wagers).

After throwing five TD passes without an interception in a blowout win over FCS foe Charleston Southern last week, third-year sophomore QB Feleipe Franks completed only 17-of-38 passes for 232 yards and two TDs with one interception and a fumble that was returned for a TD on the game’s final play.

If you’re a Gator fan and UF alum (my hand is raised), what was most galling was what we saw out of the offense late in the fourth quarter. When you’re down by 11 points, how on earth is there any thought process other than scoring a TD and then, most importantly (BY FAR!!!), converting a two-point conversion?

I really can’t put into words how much my blood was boiling when Franks found Freddie Swain for a four-yard TD pass with 3:34 remaining. At this point, any QB with a clue signals to his teammates to immediately huddle up and get ready for the two-point conversion. Truth be told, it should be coached into the entire offensive unit that that’s the scenario, but it’s your QB that must lead in this situation. And he should’ve mentioned it beforehand in the huddle a time or two during the drive.

Instead, the entire offense swarms Swain in the end zone celebrating a TD. This is so disturbing on so many levels. First of all, what the hell is there to celebrate about cutting the deficit to five against a UK team you’ve beaten 31 times in a row with less than four minutes remaining and only one timeout left?

Nothing! Nothing is the answer to that question. When the television cameras focused in on Franks, he was literally running off the field without a clue and the play clock was already down to 17 seconds. In other words, it hadn’t even occurred to Franks yet that his team had to go for two. Finally, the offense had to hurriedly huddle up and get a play called.

There was four seconds remaining on the play clock when the Gators broke the huddle. They didn’t get the play off, but the referees inexplicably didn’t whistle them for a delay-of-game flag. The two-point conversion predictably failed and Dan Mullen nearly had to burn his last timeout due to the incompetence of a QB who had zero awareness of time and score.

Ok, let’s move on. As Auburn can attest to circa 2014, it’s not easy to win at Kansas State. Mississippi State made it look that way, though. Joe Moorhead’s club went into Manhattan and dominated from start to finish in a 31-10 victory as a 6.5-point road ‘chalk.’ Sophomore RB Kylin Hill ran for 211 yards and two TDs on only 17 carries, while QB Nick Fitzgerald produced 159 rushing yards on 19 attempts. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 538-213 advantage in total offense.

Arkansas had a 27-9 lead at winless Colorado State midway through the third quarter, but Mike Bobo’s team rallied to win a 34-27 decision as a 14-point home underdog. The Razorbacks joined Tennessee and Texas A&M as the only SEC teams to lose non-conference contests so far, although the Aggies acquitted themselves extremely well.

Missouri generated 601 yards of total offense against one of the nation’s best Group of Five defenses in a 40-13 home win over Wyoming. Drew Lock connected on 33-of-45 passes for 398 yards and four TDs without an interception. We’ll find out more about the Tigers this week when they go on the road in revenge mode to face a Purdue team’s that’s in desperation mode after dropping a pair of nail-biters at home vs. Northwestern and Eastern Michigan.

I feel like at least 90 percent of college football scribes destroyed Arizona State for hiring Herm Edwards. I was in the minority, praising the hire of a coach who has infectious energy and wreaks of class and integrity. The thinking here was that he’d be able to motivate and recruit extremely well, traits that have led some coaches to enormous success even if when they didn’t have a clue about clock management and other in-game decisions (yes, Les Miles to come to mind here). And after coaching in the NFL for as long as Edwards did, he certainly knows what he’s doing with in-game moves.

This was on full display Saturday night in Tempe as Edwards milked the entire clock to allow his kicker to make a game-winning field goal in walk-off fashion. ASU and Michigan State were tied and the Sun Devils were in the red zone with about 1:45 remaining and had a first down. If you score on the next play, the Spartans have plenty of time to answer and force overtime.

Edwards opted to kneel on it a few times and have the game decided on a chip-shot FG. The strategy worked and ASU improved to 2-0 with a 16-13 win over the Spartans, who brought back 19 starters from a 10-3 team, as a 4.5-point home underdog. The Sun Devils have another tough non-conference game on deck at San Diego State, and the early returns on the Edwards hire are making most national pundits look foolish.

Staying in the Pac-12 South, the hire of Kevin Sumlin at Arizona is a different story compared to the new guy at arch-rival ASU. The Wildcats lost 45-18 at Houston, which was losing to Rice at halftime of its opener last week. Khalil Tate, who ran for 1,411 yards and averaged 9.2 yards per carry in 2017, has run for a total of 22 yards on 15 attempts through two games.

Hawaii QB Cole McDonald continues to light it up. The Warriors knocked off Rice 43-29 to improve to 3-0, but the Owls covered the number as 17-point road underdogs. Bettors on the ‘over’ like me got a super-fortunate win when three TDs were scored in the game’s final 3:01.

In his first three career starts, McDonald has thrown for 1,165 yards and 13 TDs without being intercepted. He’s also run for 125 yards and two TDs, and he’s only been sacked five times. Hawaii is in a horrific travel spot this week at Army in a noon Eastern kick. The Warriors were 6.5-point underdogs as of early Monday afternoon. Remember, they have already won outright at Colorado State (+17) and vs. Navy (+13) when catching a double-digit ‘dog number.

                          **Quick Hitters**

                          -- Houston is 2-0 and QB D’Eriq King has a 7/0 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

-- LSU’s Joe Burrow wasn’t nearly as sharp in a 31-0 home win over SE Louisiana.

-- Eastern Michigan is 12-1 ATS in its past 13 games as a road underdog after winning 20-19 at Purdue on a late FG.

-- Maryland was in a letdown spot at Bowling Green and trailed 14-10 at intermission. The Terrapins outscored the Falcons 35-0 in the second half, however, to win by a 45-14 count. They enjoyed a 565-158 advantage in total offense.

-- Texas looked awful again in a 28-21 non-covering home win over Tulsa. The Longhorns host USC this week after losing to the Trojans in double overtime last year.

-- Shea Patterson threw three TD passes without an interception in Michigan’s 49-3 win over Western Michigan.

-- Syracuse QB Eric Dungey is the country’s most important player to his team.

-- Samford enjoyed a 535-457 advantage in total offense in its 36-26 loss at Florida State as a 31-point underdog. The Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter and had two different nine-point leads, took a 23-21 advantage into the fourth quarter and the Seminoles didn’t get their first lead of the season until scoring a go-ahead TD with 4:03 remaining. A 63-yard pick-six by Levonta Taylor created the misleading final score in FSU’s favor.

-- The Sonny Dykes Era at SMU is off to a dreadful start.

-- It’s only two games, but Barry Odom’s hire of OC Derek Dooley is looking good so far (I had my doubts coming into the season).

-- Vandy has blown out Middle Tennessee (35-7) and Nevada (41-10) to start Derek Mason’s crucial fifth season with a 2-0 record. The Commodores travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame in Week 3. The other two SEC coaches considered to be on the hot seat entering the 2018 campaign are also 2-0 (LSU’s Ed Orgeron and UK’s Mark Stoops).

                          • Week 3 Injury Update
                            Brian Edwards

Let’s get you caught up on the most important injuries effecting a bunch of teams moving forward…

-- Oklahoma star RB Rodney Anderson is out for the season with a knee injury sustained in his team’s home win over UCLA this past Saturday. Anderson was a second-team All-Big-12 selection last year when he ran for 1,161 yards and 13 touchdowns with a 6.2 yards-per-carry average. He also had 17 catches for 281 yards and five TDs as a freshman. Anderson had 119 rushing yards and three TDs on just 11 attempts (10.8 YPC) so far this year. The Sooners are in revenge mode Saturday at Iowa St., which won 38-31 in Norman last year as a 31-point underdog. Also, junior starting DT Marquise Overton (appendix) is ‘out’ for OU. Overton had 43 tackles, three tackles for loss and one QB hurry in 2017.

-- OU isn’t the only team that lost its star RB in Week 2. Minnesota’s Rodney Smith also went down with a season-ending knee injury. Smith, a fifth-year senior, will apply for a sixth year of eligibility and P.J. Fleck told the media on Monday that he fully expects the NCAA to grant him another season. Smith ran for 977 yards and three TDs in ’17, averaging 4.3 YPC.

-- There are four QBs that have already been ruled ‘out’ for Week 3. Let’s start with Iowa State’s Kyle Kempt, who orchestrated the aforementioned upset at OU last year by completing 18-of-24 throws for 343 yards and three TDs without an interception. Kempt sustained a knee injury that’ll keep him on the sidelines for at least one game in his team’s 13-3 loss at Iowa this past Saturday. Kempt led the Cyclones to their first bowl bid since 2012 in ’17 when he threw for 1,787 yards (66.3% completions) with a 15/3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Sophomore Zeb Noland is expected to get his second career start. Noland completed just 4-of-10 passes for 43 yards in relief of Kempt at Iowa.

-- Duke captured a bittersweet 21-7 win at Northwestern as a short underdog this past Saturday. Junior QB Daniel Jones injured his left clavicle and underwent surgery Sunday. He is out indefinitely. Jones has started 27 games in a row since the day he stepped on campus as a freshman. He had completed 29-of-39 passes (74.4%) for 389 yards and four TDs without an interception through two games. Jones has 5,916 career passing yards and a 34/20 TD-INT ratio. He also has 1,044 career rushing yards and 15 TDs. Unfortunately for David Cutcliffe, this wasn’t the only key injury for the Blue Devils. Junior CB Mark Gilbert had season-ending hip surgery on Sunday. He was a first-team All-ACC selection in ’17 when he had 35 tackles, 15 passes broken up, six interceptions and three TFL’s. Gilbert was a fourth-team All-American pick in Phil Steele’s preseason magazine, while Steele had senior safety Jeremy McDuffie as a preseason third-team All-ACC selection. McDuffie, who was a third-team All-ACC choice last year when he tallied 57 tackles, nine PBU, three interceptions, on pick-six, one QB hurry and 0.5 TFL’s, is listed as ‘questionable’ Saturday at Baylor due to an undisclosed injury. And finally, WR Aaron Young is also a question mark with an undisclosed issue. Young had 16 catches for 219 yards and one TD in ’17.

-- San Diego State senior QB Christian Chapman (13/4 TD-INT in ’17) is ‘out’ for the next 3-6 weeks with a sprained MCL sustained in his team’s 28-14 home win. The Aztecs will play host to unbeaten Arizona St. on Saturday.

-- New Mexico QB Tevaka Tuioti is ‘out’ Saturday at New Mexico St. due to a concussion. Also, back-up QB Coltin Gerhart is a ‘questionable’ with a foot injury.

-- There also a bunch of QBs listed as ‘questionable’ in Week 3, including Illinois signal caller A.J. Bush, Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez (knee), Rutgers’s Artur Sitkowski (arm), Texas Tech’s McLane Carter (ankle) and Southern Cal’s J.T. Daniels (hand).

-- Ole Miss WR DaMarkus Lodge missed this past week’s 76-41 home win over Southern Illinois due to concussion symptoms. He is still in concussion protocol and day to day. Lodge had 41 receptions for 698 yards and seven TDs last season. He had six catches for 96 yards in a 47-27 win over Texas Tech in the Rebels’ opener.

-- Florida was without its two best defensive players, LB David Reese and DE CeCe Jefferson, in Saturday’s 27-16 home loss vs. Kentucky. Reese, a fourth-team preseason All-American in Steele’s mag, has missed the first two games with a high-ankle sprain sustained in late August. Jefferson has been suspended for the first two UF games. Dan Mullen said he expects both players to be ready for Saturday’s home game vs. Colorado St. However, starting sophomore CB Marco Wilson was lost to a season-ending ACL tear in the first quarter vs. UK. Wilson started all 11 games as a true freshman last year.

-- Washington All-American OT Trey Adams had surgery on his injured back last week. He is out indefinitely and will more than likely miss the entire season.

-- Fresno State sophomore OT Netane Muti, who started 13 of 14 games in '17 and was a preseason third-team All-MWC pick in Steele's mag, tore his Achilles in Saturday's loss at Minnesota and will miss the rest of the year.

-- Georgia Tech RB KirVonte Benson is 'questionable' at Pittsburgh after leaving Saturday's loss at USF with a leg injury. Benson rushed for 1,053 yards and six TDs with a 5.2 YPC average in '17. QB TaQuon Marshall also left the USF game injured, but he's 'probable' against the Panthers.

-- South Carolina's best defensive lineman, D.J. Wonnum, is expected to miss about four weeks with a ligament tear in his ankle. Wonnum didn't play vs. UGA. He had 56 tackles, seven TFL's, six sacks, five PBU and two QB hurries last year. DB Nick Harvey, a grad transfer from Texas A&M, was suspended for the loss to UGA and is 'questionable' vs. Marshall.

As for the weather, Hurricane Florence was upgraded to a Category 4 on Monday with the governors of South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia ordering mandatory evacuations for those along the coast starting Tuesday. Coastal Carolina has already moved its game vs. Campbell to Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

South Carolina is scheduled to host Marshall on Saturday, but classes at the school have already been cancelled indefinitely starting tomorrow. Clemson is slated to play Georgia Southern at home, while North Carolina is preparing for UCF in Chapel Hill. As for Duke, it is on the road at Baylor.

East Carolina is at Virginia Tech in Week 3, so that’s another game that could be impacted. Virginia is set to host Ohio. Whether these games get moved to a different day or postponed remains to be seen and if they’re played, weather could be an important factor.
