NCAA Football Game Preview - Miami Hurricanes vs. LSU Tigers

The LSU Tigers expect to be competing for national championships, which is why lower expectations this season have many wondering if coach Ed Orgeron could be fired with a poor start. LSU is in the top-25 but just barely, and will be the underdog in its season opener against the Miami Hurricanes.

Miami doesn’t have the toughest of schedules so a win here against a quality team would be a big help as it hopes to push for a College Football Playoff berth down the line. Miami and LSU are two of the finest programs in college football and this is a fantastic early-season clash in Week 1.

LSU would love to surprise people with the win but there are concerns about the offense, which is why the Hurricanes are the favorites in NCAA football betting lines.

The Miami Hurricanes and LSU Tigers will face off on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.

We'll have college football odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NCAA football season.

    Odds Analysis

The Hurricanes enter this matchup as the 3.5-point favorites. The game is being played at a neutral site, in Arlington, Texas at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, so neither team has the actual home field advantage, although it makes sense for it to be a pro-LSU crowd based on the proximity to Baton Rouge.

Miami is getting more than 70 percent of the action to cover this spread despite needing more than a field goal to do so. The Tigers are the +140 underdogs on the moneyline and are getting the majority of the action there. The Hurricanes are the -160 favorites to win this one.

The scoring total is listed at 46.5 points as this one could be a defensive battle for the most part. The “under” is the much more common choice, with 78 percent of the money so far headed to that side of the total in NCAA football gambling.

    Matchup To Watch

LSU cornerback Greedy Williams vs. Miami wide receiver Ahmmon Richards -- This game isn’t expected to have a lot of scoring, and this showdown may help determine which way the outcome goes. Williams has quickly become one of the nation’s best cover men and would love to shut down Richards. Williams had six interceptions last season. If he can get one and take it back for a touchdown, it could completely change the complexion of the game.

On the flip-side, Richards is a talented pass-catcher. He had 934 receiving yards as a freshman before his 2017 sophomore campaign was cut short. Richards is dealing with a knee injury but is expected to be ready for this one. He is on the short-list of best receivers in college football and if Richards can have a nice day and a catch a touchdown pass, Miami should be in good shape.

    Player To Watch

Joe Burrow -- The former Ohio State quarterback transferred to LSU and will get his chance to start. The expectations are low for the Tigers on offense as they don’t have a lot of big names at the skill positions, but if Burrow plays well it can make this team a lot more dangerous than expected.

This will be a good first test. Miami was dominant getting after the quarterback a season ago and LSU must give Burrow time to throw. The Hurricanes are an opportunistic defense so Burrow must also limit turnovers. This primetime game will help determine what kind of ceiling this LSU offense may have in 2018.

    Free College Football ATS Picks

LSU’s defense should be impressive, but there are questions offensively. Miami looks like the more well-rounded group, but this spread is too high. This one should be neck-and-neck throughout as not much separates these two teams.

The Hurricanes will squeak out the victory but LSU is the pick to cover the spread. The “under” is the pick in what should be a defensive slugfest in college football wagering.

College Football ATS Pick: Miami Hurricanes 21, LSU Tigers 20

No. 25 LSU off and running with 33-17 win over No. 8 Miami
        September 2, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Nick Brossette ran for 125 yards with two touchdowns, grad transfer quarterback Joe Burrow won his first college start and No. 25 LSU made an opening statement with a 33-17 victory over No. 8 Miami on Sunday night.

Once the game started, the Hurricanes never really backed the bravado they showed in a feisty exchange of words and some shoving between the teams during warmups about 75 minutes before kickoff.

LSU led 27-3 by halftime after Jacob Phillips returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown.

''Regardless of what's out there and what people say, we believe in each other in that room, and we proved it tonight,'' Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said about the perception that his team was the underdog.

Cole Tracy, a kicker last season at Division II Assumption College, made four field goals in his Tigers debut. His 54-yarder, which tied a school record, just skimmed over the crossbar and made it 33-3 late in the third quarter.

Miami, which has lost four games in a row since a 10-0 start last season, never got to celebrate with that gaudy turnover chain that comes out when the Hurricanes get a takeaway.

''We certainly had some things go well and some things not well,'' said Miami coach Mark Richt, going into his third season at his alma mater. ''A lot of self-inflicted wounds, not to take anything away from what LSU did. They beat us soundly.''

When LSU fumbled on the opening drive, receiver Dee Anderson managed to recover after taking a shot to the head and losing the ball briefly at the end of an 11-yard catch for a first down. The Hurricanes instead lost starting cornerback Trajan Bandy when he was ejected for targeting.

The Hurricanes thought they had a fumble return for a touchdown later in the first quarter, but a replay review determined it was an incomplete pass by Burrow instead of a fumble.

LSU went ahead to stay in the final minute of the first quarter after Burrow, who played in 10 games for Ohio State the past two years, changed a play at the line of scrimmage. Brossette then took an inside handoff and went untouched down the middle of the field for a 50-yard TD run that snapped a 3-3 tie.

''We saw it in camp, I thought he was our most physical back,'' Orgeron said.

Burrow finished 11 of 24 for 140 yards.

''Execute, do what the gameplan says,'' Burrow said ''Really all that was on my mind was going out and playing with my brothers and executing at a high level.''

Brossette's 1-yard run made it 17-3 on an 11-play drive when LSU twice converted fourth-and-1 - on a 2-yard gain by Brossette near midfield, and when Miami jumped offside. He had only 96 yards rushing all last season as a junior.

        THE TAKEAWAY

Miami: Malik Rosier had a record-setting season last year with his 31 touchdowns (26 passing, five rushing) and 3,588 yards, but had some of the same issues that plagued him in losing the final three games. Rosier was 15 of 35 for 259 yards with two interceptions against LSU. The Hurricanes were down 33-3 before his 3-yard TD keeper and 32-yard TD pass to Brian Hightower in the fourth quarter. In the losing streak to end last season, he had three total TDs (all passing) with five interceptions.

LSU: An impressive start despite a somewhat ragged fourth quarter for the Tigers, who had three other division foes from the brutal SEC West ranked ahead of them in the preseason Top 25. After their home opener, they will get an early chance to show if they are for real when they go to No. 9 Auburn in two weeks.

        IMPRESSIVE CATCHES

Jeff Thomas led Miami with five catches for 132 yards, including an impressive 1-handed grab along the sideline for a 16-yard gain on a drive in the first quarter that led to a Hurricanes field goal. Thomas had another highlight play in the third quarter, when he went high in the air to make a two-handed catch in front of defenders along the sideline.

        AT HOME IN JERRYWORLD

LSU is 4-0 in its games played in AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. All of those wins have been again Top 25 opponents. That includes three season openers and a win in the 2011 Cotton Bowl over Texas A&M).

        UP NEXT

Miami: Home opener vs. Savannah State on Saturday.

LSU: Home opener vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.

          — USC @ Stanford (-3.5)

          Quote of the Day
“I like both guys, they both are really good players, quit trying to get me to say something negative about one of these guys”
Nick Saban, talking about his top two QB’s after Saturday night’s rout of Louisville

Who was the last team the Browns beat in a regular season game?

          Sunday’s quiz
Robert Griffin III was the Browns’ QB last time they won a regular season game, in 2016.

          Saturday’s quiz
Norv Turner was the Chargers’ coach last time they finished 1st (or tied for 1st) in AFC West.

          *********************

          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

          13) NFL happenings:
          — Giants waived backup QB Davis Webb, claimed an NFL-high six players off waivers, three of whom are defensive backs. Webb was a 3rd-round draft pick LY.
          — Denver Broncos dumped QB Paxton Lynch, their first round pick two years ago. Broncos also cut four of their eight draft picks from 2017.

          12) Football writer Gary Myers posted Sunday that new Giants coach Pat Shurmur was steamed that Webb never got to play in an NFL game LY, so he could see him play on tape, in real action.

Shurmur can thank his current starting QB for that development.

Of the 53 players on the Giants’ roster, 27 of them weren’t Giants LY, 26 of them were.

          11) Saturday was the first college football Saturday with legalized wagering in Mississippi, and the GoldStrong MGM hotel in Tunica was sold out- the lines in the sportsbook were out into the lobby. They only have 4 or 5 windows for betting.

          10) PGA Tour was in Boston last week; golfer Patrick Reed got some free tickets to the Red Sox game at Fenway, then had the onions to complain about them, saying the tickets were “..…in the line drive section” He’s not the most likable guy.

          9) Astros have surprisingly lost Justin Verlander’s last five home starts.

          8) Thru his first 177 major league at-bats, Padres rookie Franmil Reyes had 13 homers, but only 19 RBI. That is hard to do.

He is hitting .298 with the bases empty, .161 (9 for 56) with men on base.

          7) Now that Aaron Donald has a contract with $87M in guarantees, he’s going to get his mother to quit her job driving a bus, which she’s done for the last 20 years.

          6) Peter Alonso has 35 homers, 117 RBI in the minor leagues this season, splitting time between AA and AAA- he hit .314 in the Eastern League, is hitting .261 in the PCL.

Why won’t the Mets bring him up? Shouldn’t they promote productive players?

          5) Good luck to Sam the Bugler, who is retiring after 25 years of calling horses onto the track at New York racetracks. Sam Grossman is the guy’s real name; he actually has a bobblehead that the NYRA gave out to fans a few years ago.

          4) Dodger bullpen hasn’t helped Clayton Kershaw much this season; they’re 11-10 in his starts this year, but they’re 13-6-2 in the first five innings of those starts.

          3) New England Patriots obviously dominate the AFC East; they’ve won that lame division 17 years in a row, but Patriots have lost four of their last five visits to Miami.

          2) If your kid is in college and wants to be a sports broadcaster, tell him to study hard- there is a young man at Syracuse doing SU football games— Ian Eagle’s son, and he’s going to get a job before your kid does. Very difficult to become a professional announcer— lot of times you need serious connections, just to get your foot in the door.

If you’re lucky enough to get your foot in the door, you best be really good, to keep your job.

          1) Apparently Aretha Franklin didn’t have a will, so the wrangling over her estate is going to be drawn out; she was worth millions, and has four sons. As usual, there will be lawyers.

            Heisman Betting Update
            September 3, 2018
            By Tom Wilkinson

            Heisman Watch

The first week of college football is basically in the books, as just the game between Virginia Tech and Florida State remains. The first week saw many of the top players get off to good starts in their bid for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, but one of the favorites did not.

Let’s take a look how the favorites did in Week 1, some new top contenders, and a few players to keep an eye on as the season develops.

            Preseason Favorites

Before the season began there were three players listed at Heisman Trophy odds of 10-1 or less. Those players were Stanford’s Bryce Love, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor.

            Bryce Love
Have you heard the saying in golf that you can’t win a tournament on the first day but that you can lose it? That was the case with Love who probably lost any chance to win the Heisman in Week 1. He had a total of 29 yards on 18 carries with no touchdowns against San Diego State. It will be almost impossible for Love to come back from that disaster and win the award.

            Tua Tagovailoa
The Crimson Tide are the No. 1 team in the country and despite what head coach Nick Saban has said, Tagovailoa is the clear starter and Jalen Hurts is the backup. Tua was great in the first half, going 11-for-15 for 195 yards with two touchdowns. He also rushed for 26 yards and one TD. He finished 12-for-16 with 227 passing yards.

            Jonathan Taylor
The Badgers running back got off to a strong start in his bid for the Heisman, as he rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries and had two long touchdown runs. The Badgers rolled over Western Kentucky and Taylor sat out most of the fourth quarter.

            Three More Top Contenders

            Will Grier

You can make a case that the new favorite to win the Heisman Trophy after Week 1 is West Virginia quarterback Will Grier. He had his first career 400 yard passing game in a win over Tennessee. He completed 25 of 34 passes for 429 yards and five touchdowns.

            Dwayne Haskins
The Buckeyes quarterback completed 22 of 30 passes for 313 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also ran twice for 24. It was the most passing yards and most touchdown passes by an Ohio State quarterback in his first start.

            McKenzie Milton
The UCF quarterback did nothing to hurt his cause in Week 1, as he threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Connecticut. He also had seven rushes for 50 yards. The Knights don’t have a high profile, but Milton is definitely on the radar of NFL scouts and he is in the conversation for early Heisman consideration.

            Keep an Eye On

            Rodney Anderson

The Sooners have a top running back who could work his way into the Heisman Trophy discussion. Anderson had 100 yards and two touchdowns in just five carries in Oklahoma’s opener. The Sooners were not tested in a 63-14 win over Florida Atlantic and Anderson didn’t even play in the second half.

            Trayveon Williams

The Texas A&M Aggies are going to run the ball a lot this season with Jimbo Fisher as head coach and Williams is going to get a lot of work. He ran for 240 yards in the season opening win over Northwestern State. If Williams has a big game against Clemson next week he will be on everyone’s Heisman contender list.

            Trace McSorley
The Nittany Lions nearly lost to Appalachian State but they pulled out a win in overtime. McSorley was okay for the Nittany Lions, as he completed 21 of 36 passes for 230 yards and 1 touchdown. He did run for 53 yards on the ground on 12 carries. McSorley will have a chance this season to make an impression in big games, but he needs to play better than he did in Week 1 to get into the discussion.

            Nick Bosa
The Ohio State defensive end played really well in a win over Oregon State, as he had four tackles and two sacks. He also had two forced fumbles and scored the first touchdown of his career. He was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year last season and he plays for one of the top teams in the country. He is the brother of San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa. The problem that Nick Bosa has is that no defensive player has won the Heisman Trophy since 1997 when Charles Woodson won the award.

              Monday's Top Prop Bet

NCAA Football Game Preview - Virginia Tech Hokies at Florida State Seminoles

College football announced its return with a vengeance this weekend, as plenty of games went down to the wire and upset specials were on display. The first batch of games is not done yet, as the Virginia Tech Hokies and Florida State Seminoles will face off on Monday night to wrap up the slate of games.

Florida State is the favorite to win this matchup, but as a marquee game, there are plenty of prop bets to consider beyond the standard spread, scoring total and moneyline. These are the type of wagers that can pay off nicely because it is the game within the game. Check out all the Florida State-Virginia Tech prop bets in NCAA football gambling.

The Virginia Tech Hokies and Florida State Seminoles will face off on Monday, September 3rd, 2018 at 8 p.m. ET at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have college football odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NCAA football season.

              Odds Analysis

Florida State is the home team in this matchup and is listed as the seven-point favorite. The Hokies are getting slightly more of the action at that spread.

The Seminoles are the -270 favorite on the moneyline to take care of business while the Hokies are the +222 underdog to pull the upset. Virginia Tech is getting more than 68 percent of the money to pull the upset. The scoring total is listed at 55 points, with the “over” the more popular choice.

              Prop Bets

The prop bets break this down into many different types of wagers. There can be a bet on the first-half spread, with Florida State a four-point favorite there. The scoring total for the first half is set at 28 points.

Virginia Tech’s total points for this contest is listed at 24 points, while Florida State’s over-under is pegged at 31.

College football is known for its big plays, and the longest touchdown yardage number is listed at 51.5 yards. Bettors must determine if the biggest touchdown play will be “under” or “over” that listed number.

It’s always tough to know whether or not a defensive or special teams touchdown will come in the game. The odds are pretty good for it happening in this one as “yes” is listed at +150 and “no” at -200.

When it comes to the first scoring play, a touchdown generally happens before a field goal or safety. The odds of a team crossing the goal-line for the first score is listed at -250, with a field goal or safety listed at +170.

Many games saw an early score this weekend. The Florida State-Virginia Tech game isn’t expected to be a shootout, which is why a score in the first five-and-a-half minutes is listed at -105, with it not happening listed at -135.

Even though the spread isn’t high, it’s likely that one of the teams scores three times in a row at some point. Those odds are listed at -300, with the “no” option coming in as the underdog at +200.

It seems like a turnover is bound to happen at some point. What kind will the first one be? An interception is the favorite at -170, with a fumble listed at +130. For those feeling bold, no turnovers is listed at +700.

Florida State is listed as the team most likely to score first at -165, with Virginia Tech coming in at +120. It would be a big boost to the Hokies’ chances if they get the ball first on the coin toss.

              Free College Football ATS Picks

There are plenty of prop bets on which to choose. While there are plenty of explosive plays in the college ranks, these defenses should do a good enough job keeping the offenses in check. With that in mind, the best prop bet available is the “under” on the longest touchdown of the game set at 51.5 yards.

College Football ATS Pick: The longest touchdown will be “under” 51.5 yards

                Virginia Tech at Florida State
                September 2, 2018
                By Brian Edwards

Matchup: (20) Virginia Tech at (19) Florida State
Venue: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, FL
                Time/TV: Monday, Sept. 3, ESPN, 8:00 p.m. ET

Virginia Tech will be looking for its first win in Tallahassee when it faces Florida State for the first time since 2012 on Monday night at Doak Campbell Stadium. As of late Sunday afternoon, most books had FSU installed as a seven-point favorite with the total in the 55-56 range. The Hokies were +250 on the money line (risk $100 to win $250).

Willie Taggart will be making his debut at FSU after replacing Jimbo Fisher, who bolted on the Seminoles to take the Texas A&M job. Taggart was hired away from Oregon one year after he was hired from South Florida. He successfully ran rebuilding projects at both Western Kentucky and USF, but there are no four-to-five-year plans at FSU.

Taggart inherits a team that limped to a 7-6 straight-up record and 4-7-2 against-the-spread ledger in 2017. FSU started the season 3-6, only to win four in a row against soft competition to close the campaign. With long-time assistant and former player Odell Haggins serving as interim head coach, the ‘Noles beat up on ULM by a 42-10 score in a re-scheduled game before blasting So. Miss 45-13 at the Independence Bowl.

FSU brings back eight starters on offense and four on defense. The ‘Noles lost 35 lettermen. The offense lost returning starting QB Deondre Francois to a torn ACL in the season-opening loss to Alabama last season. Therefore, true freshman James Blackman started the next 12 games.

Blackman completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 2,230 yards with a 19/11 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He acquitted himself well, but Francois won the battle for the starting job going into the Virginia Tech game. In 2016, Francois threw for 3,350 yards with a 20/7 TD-INT ratio.

RB Cam Akers garnered second-team All-ACC honors as true freshman in ’17. He produced 1,024 rushing yards and seven TDs with a 5.3 yards-per-carry average. Jacques Patrick will get plenty of carries, too. Patrick ran for 748 yards and seven TDs with a 5.6 YPC average as a junior last year.

FSU senior WR Nyqwan Murray had a team-best 40 receptions for 604 yards and four TDs in ’17. Junior Keith Gavin contributed 27 catches for 278 yards, while Patrick had 21 grabs for 171 yards. Akers caught 16 balls for 116 yards and one TD. The offense averaged only 27.8 points per game, but the ’16 unit scored at a 35.1 PPG clip when Francois was healthy.

In his preseason magazine, Phil Steele’s Unit Rankings have FSU with the best QB and RB situations in the ACC. The offensive line is ranked second in the conference and the wide receivers are fourth in the league. From a national perspective, the ‘Noles are eighth at QB, sixth at RB and 14th on the o-line.

FSU lost its top-four tacklers and six of its top seven from last season. This unit allowed 21.2 PPG in ’17. Junior DE Brian Burns had the best ’17 numbers of the returnees, recording 48 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, five QB hurries and four passes broken up.

Senior DT Demarcus Christmas is a preseason second-team All-ACC selection in Steele’s mag, as is sophomore safety Hamsah Nasirildeen. Christmas had 36 tackles, 3.5 TFL’s, four PBU, two QB hurries and one sack last season.

Virginia Tech 19-8 SU and 14-13 ATS in Justin Fuente’s first two years on the job. This is only the Hokies’ second game as road underdogs since Fuente replaced the legendary Frank Beamer. They won outright by a 34-31 score at Notre Dame as two-point ‘dogs in 2016.

Va. Tech finished last season with 9-4 SU record and a 6-7 ATS mark, losing a 30-21 decision to Oklahoma State at the Camping World Bowl. The other defeats came at home vs. Clemson (31-17), at Miami (28-10) and at Ga. Tech (28-22). The Hokies’ only win over a ranked foe came against 22nd-ranked West Virginia in the opener.

V-Tech brings back seven starters on offense and four on defense. There were supposed to be five returning starters on ‘D,’ but senior LB Mook Reynolds was dismissed from the program over the summer. Reynolds had 70 tackles, 7.5 TFL’s, four QB hurries, 1.5 sacks and one PBU last season.

Bud Foster has been the defensive coordinator at VT since 1995 and he remains one of the best in the business. His unit was terrific in ’17, giving up merely 14.8 PPG, and there’s still plenty of that talent around.

Senior DT Ricky Walker is a preseason second-team All-ACC selection, while junior DE Trevon Hill and junior safety Reggie Floyd are both third-team picks. Walker had 41 tackles, eight TFL’s, six QB hurries, 4.5 sacks and one PBU, while Hill produced 46 tackles, seven QB hurries, 5.5 sacks, four TFL’s, one interception and one forced fumble. Floyd started 12 of 13 games and tallied 72 tackles, three TFL’s, three interceptions for 106 return yards and one TD, two QB hurries, two forced fumbles and one PBU.

The prize of VT’s recruiting class was juco transfer CB Jeremy Webb, but he sustained a season-ending Achilles injury in June. Another top recruit, LB Alan Tisdale who enrolled early to participate in spring practice, also went down with a season-ending Achilles injury during camp in August.

Sophomore QB Josh Jackson gave Hokie fans a bit of a scare over the summer when reports circulated that he could be looking at an academic suspension. As it turned out, he’s good to go and will start Monday at FSU. As a redshirt freshman in ’17, Jackson completed 59.6 percent of his throws for 2,991 yards with a 20/9 TD-INT ratio. He also ran for 324 yards and six TDs.

Steele ranks VT’s QBs fifth-best in the ACC, while the RB are eighth. The WRs are 10th in the 14-team conference and the o-line is 11th. Those aren’t encouraging numbers, but elite QB play can help compensate for other weaknesses. And Jackson might be able to provide that.

Junior RB Deshawn McClease was part of a RB by committee approach in ’17, rushing for a team-high 530 yards and three TDs with a 4.9 YPC average. Travon McMillian transferred out, so sophomore Jalen Holston will get a lot more touches. As a freshman in ’17, Holston ran for 226 yards and three scores.

VT lost its best WR in Cam Phillips, who had 71 receptions for 964 yards and seven TDs last season. Sean Savoy started 11 games as a freshman in ’17, producing 39 catches for 454 yards and four TDs. Junior Eric Kumah had 28 grabs for 324 yards and two TDs as a sophomore. The Hokies are hoping for immediate production out of true freshman WR Tre Turner, who enrolled early for spring practice. They’ve also added Ball St transfer WR Damon Hazelton, who started nine games for the Cardinals as a true freshman in ’16 before sitting out last year.

VT is winless in six games at FSU, 1-2 in neutral-site openers and 1-7 in regular-season games at neutral venues. The ‘Noles have won seven straight home openers and 14-2 in 16 all-time meetings against the Hokies.

Kickoff is scheduled for Monday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Jackson's 2 TD passes help Virginia Tech handle FSU 24-3
                    September 3, 2018

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Virginia Tech and coach Justin Fuente notched another season-opening victory against a ranked team.

Florida State and Willie Taggart delivered the program's most inept offensive performance at home in a decade, hardly the start Taggart had hoped for with the Seminoles.

Needless to say, it was easy to tell which Atlantic Coast Conference heavyweight looked like a title contender Monday night.

Josh Jackson threw two touchdown passes, one early and another late, and the 20th-ranked Hokies handled No. 19 Florida State 24-3 in the rain to spoil Taggart's debut in Tallahassee.

''It certainly wasn't perfect by any means, but to play as intelligent as we did, I am proud,'' said Fuente, who beat then-No. 22 West Virginia to open 2017.

Florida State looked dysfunctional and disorganized most of the night, finishing with five turnovers, a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and a missed field goal. It was the first time the Seminoles failed to score a touchdown at home since losing 12-3 to Wake Forest on Sept. 20, 2008.

''Tough loss,'' said Taggart, a former head coach at Oregon, South Florida and Western Kentucky. ''Not what any of us expected. We didn't play a good game at all. It was very sloppy. It's hard to win a football game with five turnovers.

''We have to play much better. That's on all of us, starting with me.''

The Hokies were good at the start and even better with the game on the line.

Jackson connected with Eric Kumah over the middle with less than 6 minutes to play. Kumah bounded through three arm tackles and raced 49 yards for the game-sealing score . Jackson also opened the game with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Damon Hazelton in the corner of the end zone. Jackson lofted a pass that cornerback Levonta Taylor looked lost trying to defend.

Jackson completed 16 of 26 passes for 207 yards. Kumah finished with four catches for 86 yards.

Kumah also scored on special teams, scooping up the team's 75th blocked punt since 1987 . It was fitting since former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, known for his ''Beamerball'' brand of special teams, was on hand as an honorary captain.

The outcome probably shouldn't have been too surprising since the Hokies finished 9-4 in Justin Fuente's second season and returned a number of key players, including Jackson. The Seminoles are coming off a 7-6 season and are still getting acclimated to a new coaching staff and new schemes on both sides of the ball.

''I saw a lot of guys ticked off in the locker room, a lot of guys crying,'' Taggart said. ''We'll see how guys come back and respond. ... You have to do it quick.''

Little went right for Florida State all night:

                    - Receiver Nyqwan Murray fumbled on the team's opening possession, giving Virginia Tech great field position and leading to a field goal.

                    - Ricky Aguayo missed a 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

                    - Murray appeared to score on a 30-yard pass from Deondre Francois later in the second. Instead of challenging the call, the Seminoles hurried to the line and were flagged for a false start. FSU had to settle for a short field goal.

                    - Logan Tyler had his punt blocked by Chris Cunningham at the 3-yard line. Kumah scooped it up and scored, putting the Hokies up 17-3.

                    - Taggart went for it on fourth-and-3 at the Virginia Tech 21. Francois' pass fell incomplete.

The Seminoles essentially provided huge assists on both of Tech's touchdowns and cost themselves another 10 points.

''We didn't do a whole lot of adjusting,'' longtime Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. ''We fit up the speed reads and created negative plays.''

Virginia Tech had a chance to make it a three-score game late in the third quarter, but Fuente went for it on fourth down at the 1. Steven Peoples was stopped short of the goal line, keeping it a 14-point game and giving the Seminoles life.

FSU looked like it might cut the lead in half after Cam Akers broke loose for an 84-yard gain midway through the fourth, but Akers and fellow running back Amir Rasul botched a handoff in the backfield and wasted the scoring opportunity.

                    THE TAKEAWAY

Virginia Tech: It wasn't pretty for the Hokies, but some of the struggles were expected considering they opened the season on the road against a ranked opponent. Jackson played mistake-free football, which is always a good start.

Florida State: The Seminoles were downright dismal on offense. Francois, returning from a knee injury that cost him most of last season, completed 22 of 35 passes for 233 yards behind a shaky offensive line. He threw three interceptions, was sacked five times and pressured even more often.

                    LEGENDARY CAPTAINS

Retired coaches Beamer (Virginia Tech) and Bobby Bowden (Florida State) served as honorary captains for the first meeting between the two schools since 2012. The Hokies and Seminoles last played in Tallahassee in 2008.

                    RETIRED JERSEY

Two-time All-American receiver Peter Warrick had his No. 9 jersey retired at halftime. It was the 11th number retired in program history.

                    UP NEXT

Virginia Tech hosts William & Mary of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Florida State hosts another FCS school, Samford.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Things I learned while watching way too much TV

                      13) Texas Tech’s marching band was the first marching band to to travel to its school’s road football games, way back in 1925.

                      12) Actor Dennis Quaid is left-handed; he was a quarterback in Any Given Sunday, a relief pitcher in The Rookie.

                      11) Since he became the starter ten years ago, Green Bay is 94-48 when Aaron Rodgers starts for them; they’re 6-11-1 in games he’s missed.

                      10) Pittsburgh’s Joe Musgrove began Thursday’s game with 21 consecutive strikes, the most by any starting pitcher to begin a game since pitches were first tracked in 1988.

                      9) There are 48 college football games this season where the visiting team is getting a guarantee of at least $1M. At the highest level, college sports is very big business.

                      8) There is a movie called Owning Mahowny that is about a bank manager with:
                      (a) a gambling problem and
                      (b) access to a multimillion dollar bank account;

The movie is based on the true story of the largest one-man bank fraud in Canadian history. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Minnie Driver.

                      7) Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich is the first player with a cycle, a 5th hit and an outfield assist all in the same game since Andre Dawson on April 29, 1987. Yelich had his big night Wednesday in Cincinnati.

                      6) Baltimore Ravens have won their last 14 preseason games; they’re also 21-27 in the regular season the last three years, haven’t made the playoffs since 2014.

                      5) Now I feel old: Trent Green’s son is the backup QB at Northwestern.

                      4) Something is amiss with the Red Sox’ front office; David Howard, who has been Boston’s minor league field coordinator for nine years, has been fired- no word on why. Odd timing.

                      3) The other night in Fenway Park, Red Sox scored 11 runs in an inning; Andrew Benitendi made the first out of the inning with a sacrifice bunt, then ended the inning by grounding into a double play. Research Doug Kern looked this up, and says that has never happened before in the big leagues.

                      2) Friday night’s Detroit-New York baseball game was first one this year where both managers were ejected. Ejections have to be way down since instant replay became a thing.

                      1) There are 24 grad transfer QB’s in college football this season, which means a kid got his degree at one school, wasn’t happy with his playing situation and went elsewhere to finish his college career.

ARKANSAS at COLORADO STATE...Ater CU blowout loss, Rams have now failed to cover 9 straight since mid 2017. Hogs however haven’t covered as visiting chalk since Petrino days of 2010 (0-5) and just 7-14-1 overall vs. spread entering 2018.
                        Arkansas, based on CSU negatives.

CINCINNATI vs. MIAMI-OHIO (at Paul Brown Stadium)...Cincy has won 11 of last 12 SU in this long-time local rivalry though has dropped 3 of last 5 vs. line against RedHawks. Bearcats entered 2018 only 9-19 last 28 on board (that counts UCF as a loss LY even if no payout due to lightning).
Slight to Miami-Ohio, based on team trends.

TULSA at TEXAS...Horns were a different team after opener LY covering 8 of next 12. Though Tom Herman only 1-4 as Austin chalk LY. Tulsa just 3-6 vs. spread down stretch LY.

Stanford, based on extended series trends.

CAL at BYU...Cal likely chalk here so Wilcox’s 7-3 dog mark LY likely won’t apply, but Bears did enter 2018 on 9-4 spread run (8-4 LY).
                        Cal, based on team trends.

UCONN at BOISE STATE...Broncos covered a few late LY on blue carpet but home chalk mark still pretty bad past several years (13-32 since late 2010). Edsall was 3-2 as road dog in UConn return LY, was 7-2 last 9 in that role for Huskies back in 2009-10.
                        UConn, based on team trends.

MICHIGAN STATE at ARIZONA STATE...Dantonio just 1-8 as visiting chalk since 2015. MSU had been 4-15 as chalk 2015-16 before recovering to 6-3 LY. Under Herm predecessor Graham, ASU 5-2 as Tempe dog past two years.
Arizona State, based on team trends.

SAN JOSE STATE at WASHINGTON STATE...Spartans a tough sell, now 5-9-1 last 15 vs. line since late 2016, 4-8 last 12 as road dog (2-5 for Brennan LY). No covers last four as non-MW visitor, outscored 199-40 in those. Leach 7-4 as Pullman chalk since 2016 (6-6 laying DD since 2016).
Washington State, based on team trends.

RICE at HAWAII...Hatfield used to own June Jones, covered all six from 1999-2004. UH entered 2018 on 4-18-1 spread skid at Aloha Stadium, but Bows have won and covered first two TY.
Slight to Hawaii, based on current trends.

                            Who's Hot and Who's Not
                            September 3, 2018

                            Week of September 3rd

Ahh, step back and take a breath. That first full week of college football is behind us and it's time to sink or swim. Last week was busy, but with the NFL now thrown on top, you'd better be ready to look ahead to the next week by Monday morning at the latest to succeed long term in this industry.

And while it's extremely important not to overreact to one week's worth of action, but Week 1 was very interesting for a few different countries across the land. How you use that information this week is up to you, but the conversation for best/deepest division in all of college football has to be put to rest for at least one week, and another Conference is already put on blast after some rough Week 1 results.

                            Who's Hot

SEC West Teams – 7-0 SU, 6-0-1 ATS

Remember in many of those college football previews you read/listened too and how many of them talked about how good the Big Ten East division will be this year and how it's likely the best in football from top to bottom? Well, there is still plenty of time to make that statement a true one, but it sure doesn't look like it after one week.

Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State all began the year ranked but you wouldn't really know it from their Week 1 results. Michigan was the only one to lose SU, but combined they went 1-3 ATS with the lone cover coming despite Ohio State allowing 30+ to a bad Oregon State team. Penn State almost watched their season go up in flames by nearly losing to App State, and Michigan State wasn't overly impressive in a seven-point win as -20+ favs against Utah State. Needless to say, there is plenty of room for improvement in that division (although they did go 6-1 SU overall).

Compare those numbers from the best of the best in the Big 10 East with what the SEC West accomplished in Week 1. Alabama rolled over Louisville, LSU rolled over Miami, Ole Miss flipped to a road favorite just before beating up on Texas Tech, and Auburn came out on top in the Top 10 showdown with Washington. All in all, SEC West teams did lose ATS against the closing number and many of them did it with highly potent offenses.

Of the seven SEC West wins this weekend, four of them saw teams score 50+, and the average margin of victory was 31.7 points. That number is huge and while there were a couple of cupcakes in there, the SEC West teams made those games look as easy as they were supposed too while someone like Penn State needed to convert a 4th and 2 late just to have a shot at forcing OT.

It will be interesting to see what the ATS records for these SEC West teams is after Week 2, because outside of Mississippi State's game at Kansas State, and Texas A&M hosting Clemson, the rest of them will be saddled with -30+ point spreads against much lesser competition and maybe those big spreads are a shade higher than normal after these Week 1 results.

                            Who's Not

                            Big 12 Conference – 6-3 SU; 2-7 ATS

The Pac 12 took some shots late Saturday night after Saturday brought losses to the likes of Washington, Arizona, and UCLA, but bettors were lamenting the Big 12 much more as it looks like there are two teams at the top who've got a QB, and everyone else is just catching up.

A 2-7 ATS record through one week for the Big 12 is nothing to be proud of here, although when the two ATS wins come in dominant fashion by arguably your two best programs in Oklahoma and West Virginia, there is a bit of a silver lining. But those are also the two schools with the most known talent at QB this year with Kyler Murray – the $4 million MLB player – and Will Grier calling out the plays. Those two teams could easily become the best bets of this Conference in 2018, but if your backing any other Big 12 team you may want to think twice.

A couple of those ATS defeats came with Baylor and TCU easily blowing out their lesser-tier competition but failing to cover the lofty numbers those games bring. Sometimes those ATS defeats can be excused to some degree – especially in TCU's case where they lose by a few points – but there was quite of bit of inexcusable offenses by teams in this conference as well.

Texas lost outright as 13-point favorites to a Maryland team that's got some very big issues off the field, while Kansas lost SU to FCS school Nicholls State. Kansas State narrowly avoided a similar fate when they needed a late comeback to beat South Dakota 27-24, while Texas Tech got blasted by the aforementioned Ole Miss Rebels who took control of that game early on.

Now you'd have to think that a bounce back week may be coming for the Big 12 soon, but I'd hold off on that being Week 2. Both teams from Kansas already proved they shouldn't be trusted and now they face Central Michigan (Kansas) and Mississippi State (Kansas State) this week. Both have already opened up as about TD underdogs there, so can you even consider taking the points?

Oklahoma – who looked great – hosts UCLA in a game that could be a little inflated after Week 1's results, while TCU and Texas have potential trip up games against SMU and Tulsa respectively.

Games to Watch - Week 2
                              September 3, 2018

College Football Week 2: Games to Watch

Week 1 of the 2018 college football season is in the books, and as always, there were a couple of shockers and some close calls to get the season rolling.

Most of the teams that we are looking ta as potential playoff favorites won quite handily, though, but there are going to be some tougher tasks ahead for all of them.

Week 2 will be upon us before you know it, so let’s look ahead at three games that should be getting your attention this weekend. We will take a quick look at what each of the teams did in their opener, as well as breaking down the current odds.

No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs at South Carolina Gamecocks (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET)

The general consensus is that the SEC East is Georgia’s to lose, with the belief being that the Gamecocks are the only team that have a legitimate shot at taking them down. It goes without saying that this match-up is absolutely huge, with the Bulldogs in as a 9 ½ point favorite early on. Georgia took care of Austin Peay in Week 1 with a 45-0 win, falling just short of covering the spread, which was set at 46. The Gamecocks made short work of Coastal Carolina, winning 49-15 and covering the 31-point spread with the total in that game going OVER. Georgia is 6-4 versus South Carolina in their last 10 meetings, but just 3-6-1 ATS in those games.

Early Lean: I like Georgia to win this one going away, covering the 9 ½ points spread in the process.

No. 13 USC Trojans at No. 15 Stanford Cardinal (FOX, 8:30 p.m. ET)

The USC Trojans found themselves in a dogfight early on in their season opener against UNLV. The game went back and forth on the first half before USC pulled away in the second half for a 45-21 win. The Trojans did not cover the 24 ½ point spread, and the point total fell UNDER the 59 points. Stanford opened with a workmanlike, if somewhat unspectacular, 31-10 win over San Diego State, covering the 13 ½ point spread in the process, while also falling UNDER the 49 ½ point total. Stanford are in as a 3 ½ point favorite over the Trojans this weekend and have a 6-4 record in their last 10 meetings with USC. They have the same record ATS in those meetings.

Early Lean: I like the Cardinal to win and cover this coming Saturday.

No. 2 Clemson Tigers at Texas A&M Aggies (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

We always knew that we weren’t going to learn much about the Tigers from their season opener versus the Furman Paladins, and that certainly proved to be the case. They rolled out to a comfortable 48-7 win, falling short of covering the 49-point spread in that game. This week should prove to be a little tougher, as a trip to College Station is never an easy one to make. Jimbo Fisher saw his tenure get off to a winning start, with the Aggies ripping open Northwestern State in a lopsided 59-7 win, covering the spread in the process. They are not likely to get that sort of joy this weekend, as they are in as a 12 ½ point underdog versus Clemson.

Early Lean: The Tigers look ready to make another run this season, so I like them to win and cover in Week 2.

College Football Week 2 Opening Line Report

The second week of the college football season is upon us and it is the first real week where we can track early line moves. The first week of the season was completely different because the college football odds were up for months in some cases. This time around the odds were released on Sunday night or Monday morning, so we will get true early line movement we can track.

Let’s look at the early line moves for Week 2 college football action, some line moves around the key number of three and a few smaller line moves on some of the marquee games for Week 2.

                                Week 2 Early Moves

TCU -17.5 to -22.5 at SMU

The first game of Week 2 is getting a lot of action, as bettors are pounding the TCU Horned Frogs at SMU. The Horned Frogs looked good last week in a 55-7 rout of Southern, while the Mustangs were routed 46-23 at North Texas. This Friday night game can be seen on ESPN 2.

Liberty +12 to +9.5 at Army
The Flames are getting some action on Saturday on the road at Army. Liberty opened up as a 12-point underdog and that number is down to 9.5. This is one of the few dogs that got a lot of early action.

Florida Atlantic -7.5 to -10 vs. Air Force
Bettors must be ignoring what happened last week to the Owls, as they were humiliated by Oklahoma. The Falcons rolled over Stony Brook in Week 1, winning 38-0.

Vanderbilt -7.5 to -10 vs. Nevada
The Commodores are getting a lot of love from bettors, as they are now double-digit favorites vs. the Wolf Pack. Vanderbilt rolled over Middle Tennessee last week, while Nevada crushed Portland State.

Utah State -21 to -24 vs. New Mexico State
Utah State looked really good last week and nearly beat Michigan State. This will be the third game for New Mexico State and they already look like one of the worst teams in college football.

Michigan State -4 to -7 at Arizona State
This is a strange move, as Michigan State didn’t look good last week in close win over Utah State, while Arizona State looked as good as they have in years in winning their opener under Herm Edwards.

                                Key Number Line Moves

Georgia Tech -2 to -3 at South Florida

The Yellow Jackets had no trouble in their opener, as they routed Alcorn, while South Florida won by 20 points over Elon.

BYU -2.5 to -3.5 vs. California
One of the most impressive performances in Week 1 came from the Cougars as they went on the road and dominated Arizona in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated. The Golden Bears got past North Carolina in Week 1, winning by a touchdown.

                                Marquee Games Line Moves

                                Clemson -11 to -12.5 at Texas A&M

One of the marquee games this week has Clemson on the road to take on A&M. The Tigers are considered one of the best teams in the country, but Jimbo Fisher knows Clemson really well. Bettors are backing the No. 2 team in the country in this game on ESPN.

Georgia -9 to -9.5 at South Carolina
The No. 3 ranked Bulldogs had no trouble in Week 1, as they dominated Austin Peay, winning 45-0. South Carolina rolled over College of Charleston, winning 49-15. This contest can be seen on CBS on Saturday.

Pittsburgh +9 to +7.5 vs. Penn State
The Nittany Lions didn’t look good last week on defense, as they gave up a lot of points to Appalachian State. The Nittany Lions were fortunate just to get an overtime win. The Panthers were not that great, but they did get past Albany 33-7. This game is the feature game on ABC on Saturday night.

USC +4 to +3.5 at Stanford
This game on FOX has seen a little bit of movement to the Trojans. Stanford didn’t look that good last week in a win over San Diego State, while USC rolled over UNLV.
