  • Big 10 Championship Game History

The Big Ten expanded to 12 teams prior to the 2011 season when Nebraska left the Big 12. That opened the door for a conference championship, which is played at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. The conference welcomed Maryland and Rutgers in 2014.

Wisconsin won each of the first two Big Ten championships in the underdog role, beating Michigan State in 2011 and Nebraska in 2012. The Badgers claimed the "Leaders" division title both times, but the second instance was by default after Ohio State and Penn State were deemed ineligible for postseason play. After failing to cash as 9 ½-point favorites against Michigan State in 2011, the Badgers destroyed the Cornhuskers, 70-31 as short underdogs in 2012. The 'over' easily cashed both times, hitting by at least 25 points in the first two title games..

In 2014, Ohio State pulled off the first shutout in the history of Power 5 conference championships (55 games), throttling Wisconsin 59-0 despite being a four-point underdog.

Penn State captured the 2016 title game with a 38-31 win over Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions rallied from a 21-point deficit and outscored the Badgers 24-3 in the second half.

Ohio State became the first favorite to cover in the 2017 edition of this game by holding off Wisconsin, 27-21, while handing the Badgers their first loss of the season.

Underdogs are now 5-1-1 against the spread all-time in the Big Ten Championship and the 'over' is 5-2.

    • C-USA Championship Game History

The Conference USA Championship is the postseason title game for the conference. The conference currently has 12 teams that are divided equally into the East and West divisions. The two division winners would meet on the home field of the team with the better overall record.

The inaugural game took place in 2005 from Orlando, Florida with Tulsa defeating Central Florida 44-27 as a three-point road favorite. Including this win, the road team has gone 3-4 in the C-USA championship. The underdog has produced a 4-3 record against the spread during this span and the 'over' has also produced a 4-3 mark as well.

In 2011, Southern Mississippi knocked off Houston as a 12 ½-point road underdog, which was tied for the largest upset in C-USA championship history. In 2008, East Carolina stunned Tulsa 27-24 with the same point-spread.

In 2016, Western Kentucky became the first team since East Carolina (2008-09) to win back-to-back Conference USA titles, rolling past Louisiana Tech in the highest-scoring championship game in league history with 102 total points.

Since the championship started, the East Division owns an 8-2 straight up record over the West and there hasn't been much change with the teams playing in this title game. Only seven of the 12 schools in Conference USA have made an appearance. Western Kentucky, East Carolina and UCF have both won the championship twice, the only three to have multiple titles.

In the 2017 installment, North Texas and Florida Atlantic both made their first appearance and the Owls routed the Mean Green under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin.

      • MAC Championship Game History

The Mid-America Conference championship is the second-longest running league title game after the SEC (the Big 12 ended its championship after 2010). This league's contest has taken place at Ford Field in Detroit since 2003, as the game was previously played at the school with the best record (1997-2002). The winners of the Eastern and Western divisions of the MAC meet in the title game, as Northern Illinois has played in the championship each of the last five years.

Four different teams have captured the MAC championship the last four years as Toledo held off Akron in 2017 at Ford Field for its first conference title since 2004.

Akron grabbed a backdoor cover receiving 20.5 points as underdogs have now produced a 13-8 ATS record in the MAC championship. Marshall participated in the first six MAC title games (including five at home), winning five times before exiting the conference to head to Conference USA. Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Toledo currently own the most MAC titles for active league members with three, while Miami (Ohio) has claimed two conference championships.

        • Mountain West Championship Game History

The Mountain West Conference Championship pits the top teams from the Mountain and West divisions up against one another in the title game. Prior to the conference expanding to 12 schools in 2013, the champion was determined by regular season record. The venue for this matchup is determined by the division winner with the highest College Football Playoff ranking.

Bettors watched the first inaugural MWC Championship in 2013 as Fresno State defeated Utah State 24-17 at Bulldog Stadium from Fresno, California. In 2014, Boise State defeated Fresno State 28-14 from Albertson Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

In 2016, San Diego State racked up its second consecutive Mountain West Conference title with a 27-24 win at Wyoming, avenging a one-point loss just two weeks ago on the same field in Laramie. It was the Aztecs first back-to-back conference championships in 42 years.

Boise State picked up its second win in the Mountain West championship game by edging Fresno State, 17-14 as an underdog cashed for the fourth straight season in this contest.

The ‘under’ has gone 4-1 in the first five MWC title games.

          • Pac-12 Championship Game History

The Pac-12 conference welcomed in Utah and Colorado prior to the 2011 season, as the league debuted its conference championship that season. The league split into two divisions with the North consisting of California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, and Washington State, while the South displays Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA, USC, and Utah. The venue for the championship game changes each season as the division champion with the best record hosted the contest from 2011-13.

The underdog covered in each of the first three Pac-12 title games, even though the favorite won outright in each instance. Oregon closed as a 31-point home favorite over UCLA in the inaugural Pac 12 championship in 2011, as the Ducks topped the Bruins, 49-31. UCLA did not own the best record in the South division, as USC could not participate in the game due to NCAA sanctions. The Bruins qualified for the game in 2012 by owning the top mark in the South division, but fell to Stanford, 27-24 as eight-point underdogs. The 'over' cashed each time, including this past season on a 44 total, which is unusually low for a Pac 12 contest.

Starting in 2014, the game was moved to a neutral site in Santa Clara, California at the home of the San Francisco 49ers, Levi's Stadium.

In 2016, Washington routed Colorado to become the first team other than Oregon or Stanford to take home the championship hardware, and the Huskies became the first team in the game's history to have a pair of 100-yard running backs.

USC finally won its first Pac-12 championship game in 2017 by holding off Stanford, 31-28, avenging a 2015 defeat to the Cardinal by 19 points.

            • SEC Championship Game History

The Southeastern Conference championship is the most anticipated league title game in college football annually. After the first two SEC title games took place in Birmingham, Alabama (1992-93), the contest has been housed at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta starting in 1994, as the championship is played on the first Saturday of December. The champions of the Eastern and Western divisions meet as the most common matchup has been between Florida and Alabama (eight times). The only teams never to play in an SEC championship are Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Kentucky, as Missouri lost its debut in the title game in 2013 to Auburn.

Alabama tied Florida with the most SEC championships with seven, as the Crimson Tide rolled past the Gators 54-16 in the 2016 installment of the SEC Championship. The 'over' has hit in eight of the past nine title games, but the losing team has scored at least 17 points just twice in this span.

Alabama's three-year title run ended in 2017 as the Crimson Tide failed to qualify for the SEC championship. Auburn knocked off Alabama in the regular season finale to reach the SEC title game, but the Tigers were rolled by Georgia, who captured its first SEC title since 2005.

-- The Mountaineers failed to cover as 25-point favorites in that game and the 'under' improved to 4-1 during this span.

                • Bama, UGA return to scene of thriller
                  November 25, 2018
                  By The Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Hello again, Georgia and Alabama.

For the second time in less than 11 months, the two Southeastern Conference powers are set to meet at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a championship on the line in a mentor-versus-protege coaching showdown. Tua Tagovailoa's back, too, this time as anything but an understudy.

Kirby Smart's fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (11-1, 7-1 SEC) get another crack at Nick Saban and No. 1 Alabama (12-0, 8-0) on Saturday in the SEC championship game. They put on quite a show in an overtime thriller with a national title on the line back in January.

Tagovailoa came off the bench to lead a second-half comeback and returns as perhaps the Heisman Trophy front-runner.

A rematch almost seemed inevitable with both teams clearly the cream of their divisions. But Smart says the Alabama rematch couldn't be a focal point because ''certainly both teams had to win some football games to get to it.''

That future-oriented mentality wouldn't fit The Process, Saban's acclaimed methodology that Smart absorbed as his longtime assistant at Alabama, LSU and the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

''I've never been around really good teams that are focused on other teams,'' Smart said. ''The good teams I've been around are focusing on whoever they play that week. And it's really not been different for us this year.

''We've really tried to hone in on what we've got to do and what we've got to do to get better. Our concern can't be with `Bama all year. We wouldn't be here. It's a concern now because we've got to go play them.''

Both teams dispatched their in-state rivals with relative ease leading up to this game. Georgia raced to a 38-7 halftime lead in a 45-21 win over Georgia Tech . The Tide struggled in the first half but ran away from Auburn, 52-21.

But they've known this meeting was coming since Nov. 3, the earliest the title game matchup has been set. Really, they've been on a collision course since that national title clash.

Saban called the Bulldogs ''probably one of the most complete teams in the nation in terms of offense, defense, special teams.''

''This will be the most challenging game that we have all year,'' he said. ''I'm really proud of our guys for what they've been able to accomplish this year. Why guys come to this school is they get to play in games like this against great teams, and this will be a great challenge for us.''

Alabama has won every game since the national title game by 20-plus points, a 12-game streak that is the longest to open a season in NCAA history. The previous record of 10 consecutive 20-point wins at any point during a season was set by Boise State in 2002.

Alabama has reached the 12-win mark for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons.

The Bulldogs haven't had that kind of sustained success, but they've been awfully good the past two years.

They have won five straight by 17-plus points since dropping a similarly lopsided game to No. 12 LSU.

                  The reward: An Alabama rematch.

The January meeting ended with Tagovailoa's winning, second-and-26 touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith in overtime. Now, Tagovailoa could perhaps cement the Heisman if he's as good for four quarters as he was for two on that last visit. He wasn't particularly interested in talking about either the Heisman or the end of last season after Saturday's win over Auburn.

''That was last year,'' Tagovailoa said. ''For me, I just want to enjoy this win with my team, with that 24-hour (celebration) rule. And coming back into the office on Monday, we want to focus on Georgia.''

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, likewise, resisted the temptation to talk about `Bama after the Georgia Tech game.

''I'm not supposed to,.'' Fromm said.

There's no getting around it now, guys.

                  • Clemson's Swinney miffed by critics
                    November 25, 2018
                    By The Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is angry at those complaining about the second-ranked Tigers' latest dominant victory.

Swinney said Sunday he was shown articles and reports critical of his team's play in a 56-35 victory over South Carolina on Saturday night. Swinney said he'll never apologize for a three-touchdown win over his state rival.

Swinney said his goal has always been to win by ''one more point'' and if that's not enough, ''it's time for me to move on somewhere else.''

Swinney called those dissatisfied with the win ''shameful'' and that it disrespected the work his coaches and players have put in to achieve a perfect record.

Clemson (12-0) will play Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game Saturday night.

                    • Pitt hopes to challenge Clemson
                      November 25, 2018
                      By The Associated Press

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Neither Clemson coach Dabo Swinney nor Pitt's Pat Narduzzi sees the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game as a looming blowout, no matter how many others do.

The second-ranked Tigers (CFP No. 2) come in on a major roll, the ACC Atlantic champions capping their second 12-0 season since 2015 with a satisfying, 56-35 victory over state rival South Carolina on Saturday night.

''We really have had a historic season, not just a great season,'' Swinney said. ''A lot of first time whatevers.''

First-time Coastal Division winner Pitt (7-5) stumbled in its final regular-season contest, dropping a 24-3 contest at Miami , dropping out of the Top 25 - and dropping their chances, in the eyes of many, of staging an upset of the powerhouse Tigers.

''I think our kids understand that we're the underdog,'' Narduzzi said Sunday. ''Turn on any TV station or ESPN they'll probably find out.''

But it was Narduzzi's Panthers who own just one of two regular-season upsets of Clemson the past four seasons - the Tigers are 46-2 in the regular season during that stretch - when they went into Death Valley two years ago and defeated the nation's second-ranked team.

Narduzzi said that landmark win won't affect this week's game, although it certainly helped build his program into ACC Coastal champions.

When you can topple a highly ranked opponent, Narduzzi said, ''it gives your kids the belief that what you're doing is the right stuff.''

Clemson has had plenty of the right stuff since its first ACC championship season under Swinney in 2011. The Tigers have 10 or more victories each year since, have made the past three playoff fields and won the 2016 national championship less than two months after getting shocked by the Panthers.

Swinney's team has been heavy favorites against nearly everyone they've played this year and won their final eight games by margins of 20 points or more.

''It's just business as usual,'' Swinney said about facing lightly regarded Pitt.

Swinney holds players to a high standard of play, the focus totally on their week of practice and not who the opponent is, where the game is played or how high the stakes.

''Our team has done an amazing job of staying focused on the task at hand,'' he said.

When they don't, Swinney lets them know about it. It's why he let loose on All-America defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on Saturday night when he flashed a Heisman Trophy pose in the end zone following his 1-yard touchdown run. The celebration drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and Swinney told Wilkins he'd never run the ball again if he did another selfish stunt like that.

Wilkins apologized, meaning Clemson's offensive ''Fridge Package'' with nearly 700 pounds of defensive tackles in Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence lining up in the backfield might make it to the ACC championship game.

''It's been a fun year,'' Swinney said.

Even if it hasn't always been adversity free. Swinney demoted last year's quarterback starter Kelly Bryant behind strong-armed freshman Trevor Lawrence after the fourth game and Bryant, a graduate student in his fourth season, left the program with the intent to transfer.

Former Clemson running back C.J. Fuller, who was with the team last year, died suddenly at 22 years old in early October, shaking many of his former teammates.

Through it all, Swinney, Clemson has stayed the course play for another league title.

Pitt's Narduzzi believes several of his players were looking ahead to the Clemson matchup during their week prepping for Miami. He's confident the group that takes the field Saturday night will be ready to put forth their best performance and give themselves a chance few believe they have.

''The stars have to be aligned,'' Narduzzi said. ''You have to do things right and have a little luck along the way.''

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Urban Meyer contends that nobody around Ohio State will be talking about the College Football Playoff this week, even though the Buckeyes inserted themselves back into the national championship conversation with a blowout of Michigan.

Ohio State won the Big Ten East on Saturday with the 62-39 rout over the Wolverines and has a chance for a second consecutive Big Ten title if it can beat No. 21 Northwestern in the conference championship Saturday.

A spot in the playoff could still come, but the Buckeyes have to win big in Indianapolis.

''I don't believe other than kids staring at their phones that there will be a lot of conversation about it,'' Meyer said about the potential for a playoff spot. ''You get a ring when you win this championship, and that's always the conversation around here.''

Asked on a conference call with reporters Sunday whether Ohio State is worthy of being in the playoff discussion right now, Meyer said, ''I don't think we are yet.''

''Certain parts of our team certainly are,'' he said. ''And certain parts are not. But I would imagine that there are probably other teams in that same boat.''

A month ago it seemed like a stretch that Ohio State (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) would be preparing for the trip to Indianapolis.

The Buckeyes were blown out by unranked Purdue on Oct. 20, didn't look great in the next three games and were underdogs entering the regular-season finale against No. 4 Michigan and the nation's best defense.

Then came a complete thumping of the Wolverines that suddenly brought all of the Buckeyes' goals back into focus. They jumped four spots in the AP Top 25 to No. 6 and should move from No. 10 up to around Nos. 5 or 6 when the new playoff rankings come out Tuesday.

''I'm going to be very hard on everybody this week,'' Meyer promised.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said he won't have any problem keeping the focus on the game. This is a pretty big deal.

No. 21 Northwestern started 1-3, losing early season games to Duke, Akron and Michigan. But the Wildcats swept every other Big Ten West team and clinched a berth in the title game with two games left.

The Wildcats are worthy, Fitzgerald said.

''If you go back and watch, especially the Akron and Duke games, we beat ourselves,'' he said. ''We didn't play very well, we didn't coach very well, and it was very disappointing. I think our leadership really stepped up, kept grinding, kept working to get better and the credit all goes to our players.''

The Wildcats (8-4, 8-1 Big Ten) are in the Big Ten championship for the first time since the conference was divided and the game created in 2011. They haven't won a conference crown since 2000. He said he can see a day where the title game might even mean more for a team known more for its graduation rate than consistently competing with the big boys.

''I think it's great right now that every game matters in college football,'' Fitzgerald said. ''I think these conference championships obviously will have a huge influence on who makes the final four. And from a school that maybe is a historical `(have)-not' compared with a historical `have,' I like that you have every opportunity to win your way into the discussion.''

                        • Notre Dame's faith in Kelly rewarded
                          November 25, 2018
                          By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Two years ago, Notre Dame left the LA Memorial Coliseum with its program at a crossroads following a 4-8 season. Even though most thought coach Brian Kelly was on the hot seat, athletic director Jack Swarbrick had confidence that Kelly could turn things around.

Swarbrick's confidence was rewarded on that same field on Saturday. The third-ranked Fighting Irish wrapped up an unbeaten regular season with a 24-17 victory over USC and all but assured themselves a spot in the College Football Playoff.

''It's that 24-month cycle. From everyone in that room saying we were going to get it fixed to it happening. It feels good,'' Swarbrick said outside the locker room after the game.

It is the third time in program history Notre Dame has been 12-0, joining the 1988 national championship team and 2012 squad that made it to the Bowl Championship Series final before losing to Alabama.

While many were clamoring for Kelly's ouster two years ago, Swarbrick said that midseason there wasn't going to be a change. What both did do at the end of the season was examine everything about the program, from coaches to practice methods to nutrition.

Kelly hired new coordinators for offense, defense and special teams as well as a new strength coach. The result has been 22 victories in the past 25 games.

''We made changes, but we still had a core and a foundation,'' Kelly said. ''It still had to do with player development. We got our players to play at a higher level with better execution. Behind the scenes we did make some tweaks, but we won on the backs of players making plays.''

Senior linebacker Drue Tranquill said it was a special moment for the upperclassmen who were able to turn things around after the disappointment of two years ago.

''I came to Notre Dame for the tradition of excellence, the tradition of football, and for a while there, we weren't building that tradition,'' Tranquill said. ''We weren't keeping that legacy going. We stared ourselves in the mirror two years ago and made a choice and said, `We're going to decide where this ship goes.' And I'm just so proud of all the guys in the locker room. It's just a special moment, man.''

Notre Dame started last season 8-1 and was in the playoff conversation before dropping two of its last three. It went into the offseason with some momentum after a 21-17 victory over LSU in the Citrus Bowl, which included quarterback Ian Book coming off the bench to rally the Fighting Irish.

Swarbrick said last season's start as well as the Citrus Bowl victory helped serve as the springboard to this year. He also said this is the first season he can remember in his 11 years that a player hasn't been on academic probation or subject to off-field discipline.

''There is a consistency and culture that is self-sustaining. This is the best foundation we've had since I've been here,'' he said. ''Brian is as comfortable in his own skin as someone who I have been around. He is really balanced. We all have highs and lows but he is deliberate, sets a path and follows it.''

Kelly - who led the Irish to a 12-0 regular season in 2012 - put himself in the pantheon of elite Notre Dame coaches with Saturday's win. He is the first coach to go undefeated and untied twice since Frank Leahy and the first to go undefeated twice since Ara Parseghian.

Swarbrick also noted that Kelly has already accomplished something that Leahy, Parseghian, Knute Rockne or Lou Holtz didn't do - coach the program at 60.

Kelly wasn't ready to be philosophical following his third undefeated season as a head coach, but he did acknowledge that this one was more difficult than it was in 2012 and 2009 at Cincinnati. Kelly led the Bearcats to a 12-0 regular season but accepted the Notre Dame job before the Sugar Bowl.

''They're all difficult because you deal with distractions. There is so much in social media and so much that can distract you from the process on a day-to-day basis. It just makes it hard,'' Kelly said. ''Our kids did a great job of sticking with it and not getting outside of that. This was the hardest of the three.''

Notre Dame will watch the rankings show on Tuesday and then Sunday's bowl selections. With four wins over Top 25 teams, the Fighting Irish could face Clemson in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 28 if current form holds.

''To win every week with the schedule we play. We're in LA this week. I think. We're like a Broadway show. Coming to a city near you. New York, San Diego. With some rest and a neutral site, we'll be even better,'' he said.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                            13) OK, first thing today, I’d like some feedback from you, the reader; whats your favorite Christmas song? I’ll post some of the more interesting answers I get sometime before Christmas.

E-mail me at [email protected] Thanks.

                            12) Jacksonville Jaguars fired offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett Monday, then named Cody Kessler their new starting QB for their home game against the Colts this week.

Previous starter Blake Bortles had started 70+ consecutive games for Jacksonville, but the team’s 7-game losing streak cost him his starting job, at least for now. During Bortles’ tenure as the Jaguars’ starting QB, Jacksonville fired three offensive coordinators.

                            11) We all think its great to be a pro athlete or a celebrity, but can you imagine what it is like to be sitting at home Monday night watching the ballgame and while a Tennessee player is hurt. the TV geniuses decide to analyze whats wrong with the Jaguars.

All of a sudden, it becomes a “bash Bortles” thing; we all know that QB’s get too much credit and too much blame, thats why they get paid a lot of cash. But it still has to be weird to be sitting at home and hear guys who may or may not know a lot critiquing your career.

                            10) Aaron Rodgers lost his last eight road starts; it’s the longest road losing streak by a Packers QB since David Whitehurst lost nine straight from 1978-81.

                            9) Bengals lost QB Andy Dalton (hand) for the season; backup Jeff Driskel will get his first NFL start Sunday at home against Denver. Driskel has thrown 36 passes in four NFL games; he was 17-29 passing in Sunday’s loss to the Browns.

                            8) Texans 34, Titans 17— When did it become OK for football coaches to become reckless and go for it on 4th down whenever they feel like it? The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business, do things that are smart!!!

Down 14-10 late in 2nd quarter, Tennessee had 4th-and-1 on the Houston 2-yard line. Instead of doing the smart thing, kicking a FG to make it 14-13, Titans not only go for it, they give the ball to a backup TE masquerading as a fullback, first time he ever carried the ball in the NFL.

The play doesn’t work, Houston runs the next play 97 yards for a TD and school is out. There is a proper time to be conservative and/or “normal.” You do enough goofy things that don’t work, and your players will stop believing in you.

                            7) Last week was the first time the Big East didn’t have anyone in college basketball’s top 25 since February, 1982. Villanova is back in the top 25 this week.

                            6) Of the first 85 games ACC basketball teams played this month, only four of them were true road games, and North Carolina played two of those (Wofford, Elon).

                            5) Atlanta Braves signed C Brian McCann to replace Kurt Suzuki and fill out their platoon at catcher with Tyler Flowers. Braves are also expected to sign 3B Josh Donaldson to a one-year deal, which Donaldson would use to get a longer deal at this time next year.

                            4) Red Sox beat the Dodgers in the World Series; the difference in each player’s winning share and losing share of World Series money: $154,810.23.

                            3) Random fact: 19,429 baseball players have made it to the major leagues.

                            2) Ole Miss football team went 0-8 against the spread in conference games this season, the first SEC team to do that, since at least 1985. They’re fifth team since 2005 in any conference to go winless against the spread in league play.

                            1) This week, Rhode Island became the 8th state to have legalized sports betting; New York hasn’t done a damn thing yet, while everyone goes over to New Jersey to bet, and spend money on food and Christmas shopping. Brilliant!!!
