        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Fister finding form with Nats
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Tiger Troubles

The Detriot Tigers have lost 12 of their last 16 games losing eight of nine in that streak while favored. The Tigers (-141, 9) turn to Justin Verlander to stop the bleeding vs. the Toronto Blue Jays. Verlander has had his fair share of troubles as well, giving up 19 runs in his last four outings.

        A's Back on Track

After a mini-slump to end May, the A's are back to their normal selves on route to five straight wins. The A's have posted a 4-1 over/under mark during the streak in which they have outscored opponents by over four runs per game. They have a tough task against the New York Yankees (-159, 7.5) and Masahiro Tanaka.

        Skid has Rays Sinking

The Rays just cannot catch a break, unless it is in Wil Myers' wrist. Losers of nine straight (3-6 over/under), the Rays (-152, 7.5) turn to Jake Odorizzi to halt their skid when they face the Miami Marlins. Unfortunately the Rays are just 2-8 in Odorizzi's 10 starts this season.

        Pitching Notes

        * Doug Fister makes his sixth start of the season for the Nationals (-184, 7.5) at home against the Phillies. Since a rough outing in his first start, Fister has surrendered just six runs in his last 25.1 innings. The Nats have been giving Fister good support scoring 5.8 runs per game good for a 3-1-1 over/under mark.

        * Wily Peralta hasn't had much luck in his last seven outings for the Brewers. Despite a 2.73 ERA and giving up more than 3 runs just once in those outings, he has recorded just one win in that span. The Brewers play the Minnesota Twins as -120 favorites, but are 0-4 in Peralta's last four starts as a favorite.

        Hitting Notes

        * The San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Wednesday in true Padres fashion, by recording just one hit in the game. It was the third one-hit victory in franchise history and improved their league leading over/under standing to 20-37-3. The Padres are off Thursday before starting a three-game series with Washington Friday.

        * The Arizona Diamondbacks exploded for 16 runs in their victory over the Colorado Rockies Wednesday night. It is the third time since May 17 they have scored at least 12 runs. The D-Backs seem to be all-or-nothing though, going 5-12 over/under since then. The total for today's game vs. the Rockies is at 10.5.

        Totals Streak

Milwaukee Brewers (8-1 over/under): Including one shutout at the hands of the Cubs, the Brewers have gone on a scoring tear, averaging 6.1 runs per game to help the hot run against the over. The Brewers face their highest total during the current streak against the Twins today, with the over/under set at 9.

        Injury Notes

        * New York Yankees outfielder and DH Carlos Beltran played his final rehab game Wednesday and could return to the Bronx Bombers lineup as early as today against the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees have gone 11-10 SU, 8-13 over.under without Beltran, good for -$231 units.

        * Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout is now listed as doubtful to play Thursday's game against the Houston Astros after he re-aggravated his nagging back injury Tuesday night. An MRI Wednesday revealed no serious damage, but did show some inflammation.

        Weather Watch

There is rain expected for the series finale between the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees. If the game gets played there will also be a 10-11 mile per hour wind blowing across the field from third to first. The over is 5-0 in games at Yankee Stadium where this is the wind is blowing like this.

        Umpire Stat of the Day

Umpire Dale Scott will be calling balls and strikes for the interleague game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals. The under is 6-0 in Scott's last six games when he his behind the plate. The total for the game is currently at 7.5.

                  Friday's Late Tips

                  June 6, 2014

Braves at Diamondbacks – 9:40 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  ATL: Teheran (5-3, 1.83 ERA)
                  ARZ: McCarthy (1-7, 5.20 ERA)

Previous series results: The Diamondbacks return home after pulling off a three-game sweep over the struggling Rockies. Arizona plated 28 runs in the final two victories at Coors Field, while sweeping its first series of the season. The Braves will be happy not to play an American League opponent after dropping a pair of home contests to the Mariners. Atlanta owns an 0-6 record in interleague play, which includes four losses at Turner Field.

What to watch for: The Braves have lost four of their past five road series openers, while posting an 8-1 mark to the ‘under’ in the last nine starts made by Teheran. The Diamondbacks are 1-5 in McCarthy’s six starts in the role of an underdog, while Arizona’s pitching has allowed at least four runs in six of the past seven games played at Chase Field.

White Sox at Angels – 10:05 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  CHW: Rienzo (4-2, 4.26 ERA)
                  LAA: Weaver (6-4, 3.33 ERA)

Previous series results: The White Sox remain in Southern California after grabbing two of three from the Dodgers earlier this week. Chicago cashed in each of the final two wins as underdogs of +158 and +165, while improving to 6-3 in the past nine contests. The Angels have been going backwards of late by dropping six of nine games on their road trip, while losing two of three at Houston, all as a favorite.

What to watch for: Los Angeles is 6-1 to the ‘over’ in the past seven contests, while allowing at least five runs six times in this span. The White Sox have won each of the last four road starts made by Rienzo, while Chicago has cashed the ‘under’ in eight of the previous nine contests overall.

Nationals at Padres – 10:10 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  WSH: Roark (3-4, 3.25 ERA)
                  SD: Ross (6-4, 2.85 ERA)

Previous series results: The Nationals swept the struggling Phillies at home, while scoring 19 runs in those three victories. The Padres continue their homestand as San Diego avoided a sweep by knocking off Pittsburgh on Wednesday, 3-1 in spite of racking up only one hit. Washington has won five of the past seven meetings with San Diego, but the two teams split a four-game set at Nationals Park in late April.

What to watch for: Washington has lost each of the last three starts made by Roark, but the Nationals scored just three total runs in those outings (all ‘unders’). The Padres are 1-5 in the last six series openers at Petco Park, but San Diego has won four of the last five home starts made by Ross. San Diego’s offense continues to be the worst in baseball, cashing the ‘under’ in five of the past six games overall.

Mets at Giants – 10:15 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  NYM: Niese (3-3, 2.69 ERA)
                  SF: Cain (1-3, 3.66 ERA)

Previous series results: The Mets head to the West Coast after losing all three games to the suddenly surging Cubs, including last night’s 7-4 defeat. San Francisco returns home following a very successful road trip, capped off by taking two of three from Cincinnati. The Giants compiled a 5-2 mark against the Cardinals and Reds, while continuing to stay atop the NL West race at 39-21.

What to watch for: Matt Cain is back from the disabled list, as the Giants have won three of his last four starts since beginning the season at 0-4 in his first four outings. The Mets are 5-1-1 to the ‘over’ in the past seven games, while New York is 2-4 in its last six road series openers. New York has seen plenty of success at AT&T Park over the last few seasons, winning each of the last five visits to San Francisco.

                      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Somebody didn't vote Lebron James for first team all-NBA; that person needs to lose his voting rights, at least for a year.

-- Cubs' Travis Wood is only pitcher in last 40 years to homer in six consecutive seasons; he hit his first of the year last night against the Mets.

-- Last two nights, Arizona outscored Colorado 16-1 in 8th/9th innings.

-- Miami 11, Tampa Bay 6-- Rays have lost ten games in a row.

-- Mets starting pitchers are 4-0 in their last 13 games; bullpen is 3-6.

-- Spurs 110, Heat 95-- Spurs shot 14-16 from field in 4th quarter, 6-6 from arc in an arena where it was 90 degrees, with no A/C working.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

                      13) My main memory of Don Zimmer the manager was that he had onions, would try non-traditional things to try and win; problem with that was in an age of too much media, he got roasted when it didn’t work. Zimmer had a profound effect on Rays’ manager Joe Maddon, who I consider to be a great manager and is daring in the Zimmer mold, but it is easier to do in a smaller market.

                      12) Phils’ manager Ryne Sandberg was a 20th-round draft pick, the lowest draft pick ever to make it to the Hall of Fame. Mike Piazza will shatter that record someday; he was a much lower pick and greatly deserves to be in Cooperstown.

                      11) Only one player has won an NBA title in three different decades: John Salley won with Detroit in 1989 and 1990, with the Bulls in ’96, Lakers in 2000.

                      10) If the Tigers offered struggling reliever Joe Nathan to the A’s for struggling reliever Jim Johnson, would either side say no and if so, which one?

                      9) Thoughts and prayers to TNT’s Craig Sager, who will be receiving a bone marrow transplant from his son on July 3. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

                      8) Los Angeles Kings have four playoff wins this spring when they’ve trailed by 2+ goals, most by any team in one year since the ’87 Flyers.

                      7) Underrated baseball record: Shawn Green’s 19 total bases in one game. Very difficult to break it.

                      6) Another underrated record: Hack Wilson’s 190 RBI in one year; when it didn’t fall during the steroids era, you know it probably never will fall.

                      5) Maverick McNealy is a golfer at Stanford who qualified for the US Open next week; his dad will caddy for him. His billionaire dad Sam McNealy is co-founder of Sun Microsystems, which makes him really, really rich.

                      4) Flip Saunders conducted a search to find the next coach of the Timberwolves and came up with…..himself. Vinny Del Negro was thought to be in running there.

                      3) 10+ major league baseball teams are rumored to cross off any pitching prospect who has already had Tommy John surgery, figuring another such operation is on the horizon.

                      2) When Dee Gordon was drafted in 2008, he turned his cellphone off that day; his dad Tom took draft calls, while sitting in the Phillies’ bullpen—he was still an active player then.

                      1) UCLA’s Zach Lavine supposedly has a 46-inch vertical leap, which is great, but the bigger question is this: Can he play? Kid averaged less than 10 ppg in college last year, not exactly the stuff of superstardom.
