        Wednesday, June 4

Rockies' OF Carlos Gonzalez, doubtful Wednesday

Gonzalez was forced to leave Tuesday's game with left index finger injury and is not expected to return for Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Hamilton returns to Angels but Trout leaves with ailing back

Angels left fielder Josh Hamilton was in the midst of a scorching hot

start to the 2014 season before an unfortunate decision to slide head first into first

base against the Seattle Mariners on April 8 resulted in his tearing a ligament in his

left thumb, an injury that cost him 48 games.

Hamilton was batting .444/.545/.741 with two home runs and six RBIs over eight games

before landing on the 15-day disabled list on April 9 and subsequently undergoing thumb

surgery. On Tuesday night, he returned to action in the Angels' 7-2 loss and picked up

right where he left off, finishing 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run. In his first at-bat, Hamilton hit a blast to straightaway center field that would have cleared the fence in most parks but was flagged down by Dexter Fowler.

"It felt good, I felt calm, I was seeing the ball, and overall, the at-bats felt good," Hamilton said.

With Hamilton back in the fold, the Angels were hopeful of finally putting their primary lineup on the field and getting the chance to watch that group work in concert. However, after one trip through the batting order, that dream was deferred when center fielder Mike Trout departed with mid-back discomfort after striking out in his first at-bat. Trout had missed the previous two games with lower-back stiffness and leaves the Angels wondering when he will be healthy enough to return unencumbered.

"We'll definitely take a half-step back here and try to figure out what's going on," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

          Wednesday's AL Action

          June 4, 2014

Athletics at Yankees – 7:05 PM EST

          Probable Pitchers:
          OAK: Chavez (4-3, 2.78 ERA)
          NYY: Nuno (1-2, 5.48 ERA)

Series recap: The A’s took care of the Yankees in 10 innings, 5-2 to cash as -120 road favorites on Tuesday. Oakland scored a run in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2 before plating three runs in the top of the 10th. The Yankees accomplished a rare feat by losing the last three games at home to three different opponents (Twins, Mariners, and A’s).

What to watch for: Since winning eight of his first nine starts, the A’s have lost each of Chavez’s last two outings to the Blue Jays and Tigers. New York has dropped five of its past six home contests, while scoring two runs or less four times in this span. However, the Yankees have won five of their past seven Game 2’s of a series played in the Bronx.

Red Sox at Indians – 7:05 PM EST

          Probable Pitchers:
          BOS: Workman (0-0, 3.24 ERA)
          CLE: Kluber (6-3, 3.04 ERA)

Series recap: The Indians remain hot by picking up their fifth straight win in last night’s 5-3 triumph over the Red Sox. Cleveland is riding an eight-game winning streak at Progressive Field, while scoring at least five runs in seven of those victories. Boston has dropped two straight since winning seven consecutive games.

What to watch for: Cleveland has won five of its past seven home series finales, while the Tribe is a perfect 5-0 in Kluber’s previous five trips to the mound. The Red Sox are currently on a seven-game ‘under’ streak, while posting a 3-7 record in the last 10 games away from Fenway Park.

Blue Jays at Tigers – 7:08 PM EST

          Probable Pitchers:
          TOR: Dickey (5-4, 4.30 ERA)
          DET: Porcello (8-2, 3.68 ERA)

Series recap: Following eight scoreless innings, the Blue Jays and Tigers combined to score eight runs in the ninth inning as Toronto held off Detroit, 5-3 to cash as +130 road underdogs. Toronto picked up just its second win in the last six tries at Comerica Park, while remaining in first place atop the AL East.

What to watch for: Since allowing 15 runs to the Indians on May 14, the Jays have won 15 of their past 18 games, while posting an incredible 9-1 road record the last 10 tries. The Tigers are 7-1 in Porcello’s last eight starts, but Detroit has scored three runs or less in each of his past three home outings.

Orioles at Rangers – 8:05 PM EST

          Probable Pitchers:
          BAL: Norris (3-5, 4.04 ERA)
          TEX: Martinez (1-1, 2.75 ERA)

Series recap: Baltimore’s offense exploded late in an 8-3 blowout of Texas last night by plating six runs in the eighth inning to go ‘over’ the total of 9 ½. Following a four-game skid, the Orioles have won three straight contests, their longest winning streak since May 10.

What to watch for: Norris has allowed four earned runs in three of his last four trips to the mound, while Baltimore owns a 2-4 record in his six road starts. Texas has compiled a 5-1 record in the last six games off a loss, but the Rangers have scored three runs or less in four consecutive contests. The late outburst by the Orioles last night snapped a six-game ‘under’ streak at home for the Rangers.

Angels at Astros – 8:10 PM EST

          Probable Pitchers:
          LAA: Richards (4-2, 3.64 ERA)
          HOU: Cosart (4-4, 4.18 ERA)

Series recap: The Astros snapped a mini two-game skid by exploding for seven runs in a 7-2 blowout of the Angels on Tuesday as +120 home underdogs. Los Angeles dropped its fourth straight game, while the Halos have given up at least five runs each of the last five contests (all ‘overs’).

What to watch for: The Angels have put together a 5-2 record in Richards’ seven road starts, in spite of the right-hander lasting just 0.2 innings in a 9-5 defeat at Oakland in his previous outing. The Astros have won four of their last six Game 2’s of a series, including three straight victories in this situation at Minute Maid Park.

                  Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Blue Jays won in Detroit, are now 16-3 in their last nineteen games.

-- NFL isn't using a Roman numeral for Super Bowl 50, which would be SBL.

-- San Diego beat the Pirates 3-2, despite getting only one hit.

-- Pittsburgh is going bring hot outfield prospect Gregory Polanco soon; no one is saying exactly when, but enough already, bring the kid up.

-- Samford will fire hoop coach Benny Seltzer; 14 players have transferred out of the program the last two years-- thats a whole team.

-- Kings 3, Rangers 2 OT-- LA's last OT win in a home playoff game? 2001.

                  **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

                  13) CBSSports was saying yesterday how over 10% (14+ out of 127) starting QBs in D-I football this season will be transfers, so its not just basketball where kids bolt for greener pastures.

                  12) Could this be a down year for QBs in the SEC? Missouri’s Maty Mauk was picked by SEC SIDs as the best passing QB in the league this year, which would indicate a down year, unless one or more of the new kids emerges.

                  11) 49ers signed QB Colin Kaepernick to a six-year $126M contract, $61M of which is guaranteed.

                  10) Illinois replaces Maryland in the Jimmy V Classic next fall; they’ll play Villanova, while Louisville-Indiana will be the featured half of the twinbill.

                  9) Agree or disagree: Jimmy Rollins is a Hall of Fame player? Mike Schmidt was saying he is this week, I’m leaning towards no but have to look into it more. What do you think?

                  8) Jason Lane hit .241 with 61 homers in six years as an outfielder with the Astros, from 2002-07; seven years later, Lane returned to the majors as a pitcher with San Diego, retiring all 10 Pirates he faced in relief Tuesday night. Interesting story; had the Astros’ 18-inning playoff game in 2005 gone one more inning, Lane was going to pitch the 19th inning in that game.

                  7) Matt Kuchar withdrew from the Memphis Open golf tournament this week, leaving Dustin Johnson (12-1) as the wagering favorite in the field.

                  6) Paul George’s 3rd-team all-NBA selection kick-started a $7M bonus from the Pacers, not a bad payday.

                  5) DeJounte Murray is a 4-star recruit who will be playing for Lorenzo Romar at Washington, good get for the Huskies.

                  4) Charles Cooke scored 14.3 ppg for James Madison last year; he transfers to Dayton, where he’ll have two years to play after sitting out next season. Glad to see the Cooke family doesn’t have any sick relatives to use as an excuse for Charles to be eligible to play immediately.

                  3) Chattanooga coach Will Wood got a nice contract extension from the Mocs; Wood is one more good year away from breaking that contract to move on to greener pastures (Mississippi State next spring?); he is VCU guy and plays that fast-paced style that will be popular with fans, as long as he wins with it.

                  2) Will Lamar Odom be oldest player ever in the Las Vegas Summer League? Is it possible there will be Kardashians at UNLV to watch the summer league games, and if so, will I meet any of them? (No!!!) Are the Knicks serious about signing Odom? Is he serious about playing again?

                  1) Looks like San Jose Sharks will be hosting an outdoor hockey game next winter, probably in the 49ers’ new stadium in Santa Clara, or would they use the Giants’ baseball park?

RIP Mr Don Zimmer, a baseball icon.........

-- Played 12 years in majors, including the '55 Brooklyn Dodgers, who won their only World Series in Brooklyn that year.

-- Played for the '62 Mets, one of the worst teams ever.

-- He got married at home plate when he was a minor leaguer in Elmira, 1951.

-- He was 885-858 in 13 years as a manager.........

-- Was manager of the Red Sox when they lost a play-in game in 1978.

-- Won a division title with the Cubs in 1989.

-- Was Joe Torre's bench coach for four World Championship teams.

-- Was a senior advisor for the Rays the last several years.
