Wainwright set to make next start

Adam Wainwright declared himself ready to start, as scheduled, on Saturday after throwing 35-40 pitches in a morning bullpen session at Busch Stadium on Wednesday.

"We're going to keep talking to him and hopefully he continues to do the right thing and let us know how he is feeling so we can get ahead of [any other problems]," manager Mike Matheny said. "The reason we take this little break is to hope it won't return. But we have to keep watching it. If we need to take more time, we take more time. That's all there is to it."

What trend came through big time Wednesday night?

It was another good night to bet on underdogs against the runline Wednesday.

Underdogs came through big time, putting up an 11-3 mark against the runline. Good for a success rate of almost 79 percent. Away dogs did most of the work going 9-3, while home dogs went 2-0.

Underdogs have been hitting just over 61 percent of the time so far this season.

            • Preview: Red Sox (34-41) at Mariners (39-36)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Safeco Field
              Date: June 23, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

Though Seattle's Felix Hernandez has received little run support of late, he's pitched extremely well over the last month.

The right-hander has been just as tough on the Boston Red Sox in recent years.

Looking for another strong performance overall and against the reigning World Series champions, Hernandez tries to help the streaking Mariners avoid a seventh consecutive defeat to the visiting Red Sox on Monday night.

Hernandez (8-2, 2.22 ERA) is 4-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 62 strikeouts in his last seven starts. However, Seattle (40-36) has scored one run while he's been on the mound yielding two runs, 11 hits and striking out 31 in 22 1-3 innings to go 0-1 in his last three outings. He gave up a run and three hits while striking out 10 without a walk over seven innings of a 2-1 loss at San Diego on Wednesday.

"I don't care if I get the decision," Hernandez told the Mariners' official website. "It's not about winning for me, just as a team."

Though Hernandez has allowed one run or none while pitching seven or more innings and not factoring in the decision 28 times, manager Lloyd McClendon won't feel sorry for his ace.

"Every time we don't score runs for Felix, we can't say it's a tough game for Felix," McClendon said. "It's a tough game for the Seattle Mariners."

The Mariners have scored 18 runs with their ace on the mound while he's gone 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his last three starts versus Boston (35-41).

He's allowed a run each while totaling 25 innings in winning two of his last three home starts overall, and has a 2.35 ERA during a three-start winning streak against the Red Sox at Safeco Field. Hernandez gave up two runs in seven innings of an 11-4 home win in the teams' first meeting last season, but Boston averaged 8.5 runs while winning the next six in a row.

David Ortiz is batting .323 with a home run against Hernandez, and homered in the 10th inning of Sunday's 7-6 victory that helped Boston avoid being swept in a four-game set at Oakland.

'I like to go out there and make things happen,' said Ortiz, who went 8 for 13 with three doubles, two homers and four RBIs at Seattle last season.

Teammate Mike Napoli, who also homered and stole home Sunday, is 6 for 36 (.167) with two doubles, a home run and 14 strikeouts versus Hernandez.

Looking for a fourth straight win overall and at home, the Mariners swept a three-game road set from a Kansas City team that began that series atop the AL Central. Roenis Elias pitched 6 2-3 strong innings Sunday during Seattle's second straight 2-1 victory.

'It shows what we're able to do when we play well," said veteran Willie Bloomquist, who is batting .375 with nine RBIs in his last 14 games.

A career .308 hitter versus Boston, Robinson Cano faces the Red Sox for the first time since leaving the rival Yankees. He's hit .379 (11 for 29) with five doubles since 2010 against Boston's John Lackey (8-4, 2.96 ERA), who is 3-1 with a 1.60 ERA in his last six starts.

The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out nine over nine scoreless innings of a 2-1, 10-inning win over Minnesota on Wednesday.

Lackey is 6-0 with a 2.01 ERA in his last seven starts at Seattle, though he has not pitched there since 2011.

                • Nats, Brewers clash

                  June 23, 2014

                  Washington (39-35) at Milwaukee (47-30)

First pitch: Monday, 8:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Milwaukee -115, Washington +105, Total: 8

Two teams leading their respective divisions, the Nationals and Brewers, go head-to-head in the opener of their three-game series starting Monday night.

The Nationals have jumped back into first place in the NL East after winning four of their past six games; including 2-of-4 against division foe Atlanta. After losing the first two contests of the series, Washington was able to get big pitching performances from its starters and outscore the Braves 7-1 over the final two games. The pitching staff allowed only four hits and a run in Sunday afternoon’s 4-1, series-tying win, as their offense had timely hits while going just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. 2B Anthony Rendon (.275 BA) has been having a big year, and is 9-for-25 (.360) with four doubles, two home runs, 8 RBI and five runs over his past six games.

Milwaukee has been the surprise team of the season as it currently holds a five-game lead over the Cardinals in the NL Central after winning 11 of 15 games, including four in a row. The Brewers most recently swept the Rockies in a three-game set, as they put on an offensive show, averaging 9.3 runs per game and capping off the sweep with an exciting 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon. They hit six home runs over the series in the thin air of Colorado with 3B Aramis Ramirez (.297 BA) hitting two of them. He has gone 17-for-39 (.436) with five doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and nine runs over his past 10 games played.

The pitching matchup for this contest will put LHP Gio Gonzalez (3-4, 4.85 ERA) of the Nationals up against RHP Matt Garza (4-4, 4.02 ERA) for the host Brewers. This season, Washington is 16-18 in road games while Milwaukee is a solid 20-15 when playing in front of its hometown fans.

These two clubs have now faced each other 15 times over the past three years, with the Nationals holding a 9-6 edge overall, including a 5-2 mark in Milwaukee over that time.

Some trends to keep an eye on in this contest include the Nationals going 15-3 against NL Central opponents over the past two seasons while going just 9-27 (.250) as a road underdog of +100 to +125 in the same timeframe.

On the injury front, both OF Bryce Harper (thumb) and C Wilson Ramos (hamstring) are doing rehab assignments in the minors for Washington while the Brewers have no significant injuries coming into this contest.

Gio Gonzalez has not looked like his usual self this season as he carries his highest ERA (4.85) since the 2009 campaign. Most of his peripheral numbers have looked similar though, as he is striking out a solid 9.5 batters per nine innings while allowing just five home runs in 55.2 IP (0.81 HR/9). His bloated ERA has come from batters hitting .320 BABIP, and the fact that he is holding just 67.6% of runners on base. Gonzalez has not pitched well over his past three starts, averaging only 4.1 innings per outing while giving up 16 runs (11.68 ERA), which has caused his ERA to jump from 2.91 to 4.85 in that time.

Gonzalez has gone up against the Brewers just twice in his career, going 1-0 (2-0 team record) with a 2.77 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. When he last faced them on Sept. 22, 2012, he was very impressive, allowing only two unearned runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in seven frames. C Jonathan Lucroy has faced the lefty just three times, but is 2-for-2 against him with a walk. Meanwhile, big names like OF Ryan Braun (1-for-6, 2 K’s) and OF Carlos Gomez (1-for-7) have not done well in the matchup.

Washington’s relievers have combined to go 12-10 with an impressive 2.50 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, and have saved 17-of-22 games (77%). Closer Rafael Soriano (1.16 ERA, 17 saves) is 17-for-19 in his save opportunities this year while allowing just 17 hits in 31 innings on the mound.

Matt Garza has been having a solid season despite his lowest strikeout rate (6.7 K/9) since 2008. While his strikeouts have gone down, so have his home runs allowed, as just seven players have gone deep against him in 94 frames this year (0.67 HR/9). His ERA has slowly been dropping, and is now close to going under 4.00 after allowing just six runs over his past four starts (27 IP). Garza is 2-0 in those outings and earned a win his last time out on Wednesday when he faced the Diamondbacks, tossing 7.2 innings while allowing three runs (2 ER) on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

Garza has not always had his best performances against the Nationals though, going 0-1 (2-2 team record) with a 6.41 ERA and 1.73 WHIP while actually getting a quality start in each of his past two times facing them. Both 1B Adam LaRoche (2-for-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and OF Jayson Werth (3-for-10, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 5 K’s) have done well against Garza in the past, while SS Ian Desmond is hitless with three strikeouts in six at-bats against him.

Milwaukee’s bullpen has been solid this season, going 14-11 with a 3.55 ERA and 1.33 WHIP while successfully saving 26-of-35 games (74%) this year. Francisco Rodriguez (2.35 ERA, 25 saves) leads the league in saves while blowing just two, and has a solid 43:9 K-to-BB ratio over 38.1 frames.

                      9) Angels' pitcher Matt Shoemaker made the big leagues despite not being one of the 1,504 players picked in the 2008 draft.

                      8) Bronx Bombers are 22-11 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs, 17-24 in games won by 3+ runs. Everyone has injuries, but Joe Girardi is getting a lot out of a roster with lot of older, fading, oft-injured players.

                      7) Over 60% of American-born players in major leagues played college baseball.

                      6) Virginia-Vanderbilt play best-of-3 for the national baseball title this week. This is the 7th year in a row an SEC team is the College World Series. Its been 58 years since an ACC team won the championship (Wake Forest).

                      5) NBA prospect Isaiah Austin (from Baylor) won't play ball any more after a routine physical discovered Marfan Syndrome, which can lead to heart problems if not dealt with. Sad thing for the kid; we wish him well.

                      4) NHL season just ended, but they've already announced the schedule for next season; Toronto Maple Leafs have 18 sets of back/backs, which is a lot. Reason is said to be that Rogers Communications played a small fortune for TV rights and they want the Leafs on a lot of Saturday/Sunday telecasts, so thats that.

                      3) Sonny Gray will get his turn skipped Tuesday and will pitch Saturday, just to lighten his workload over the course of the season. This is his first full year in major leagues and they don't want him throwing much more than 200 innings this season.

                      2) No pitcher should ever bat in an All-Star Game; its a game the DH was made for. They have so many guys in the game to begin with; why should pitchers bat?

                      1) Home field in World Series should be determined by who wins interleague play. It is still stupid that the result of the All-Star Game means anything, and I'll rant more about this in next three weeks, since the A's have a shot to get to the World Series.

Brewers continue to rule on the road

Riding some early offense, a solid performance from their bullpen and another miraculous gift from the baseball gods — this time in the form of a ninth-inning Corey Dickerson pratfall — the Milwaukee Brewers closed out a tremendous road trip with a wild 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon.

It was just the second sweep of the Rockies ever on their home field by the Brewers and their first since 2004. It also came as little surprise considering how well the team continues to do away from Miller Park.

The Brewers concluded their seven-game trip to Arizona and Colorado with a 6-1 record, upping their major-league-leading road record to 27-15. They're also a season-best 17 games over .500 at 47-30, tops in the National League, and just a half-game behind the Oakland A's for best overall record.

Three saves in three days for Mariners' Rodney

Before the game Sunday, Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said he was unsure whether he would use closer Fernando Rodney that day.

Rodney pitched in each of the three previous games, recording saves in the latter two, making his services questionable for the series finale at Kauffman Stadium.

However, with the Mariners clinging to a one-run lead in the ninth, McClendon dialed Rodney's number again. Rodney got two quick outs, yielded a pinch single Mike Moustakas, then struck out Pedro Ciriaco to preserve the Mariners' 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals and complete the series sweep.

"I had a talk with him, and he felt good," McClendon said. "He's worked very, very efficiently, and he was very efficient today as well. He has not thrown a lot of pitches."

McClendon told Rodney he definitely would not pitch Monday.

                                Injuries leave Cardinals rotation shorthanded

The team that seemed to have all the starting pitching anyone could want now doesn't know who will take its start in Colorado Wednesday.

In the wake of general manager John Mozeliak's post-game announcement Sunday that Jaime Garcia (shoulder) and Michael Wacha (stress reaction in scapula) are headed for the disabled list, St. Louis is now in search mode.

Mozeliak said that Joe Kelly, who will start a rehab assignment Friday night in Memphis, will need at least two minor league starts before returning to the big club. Recently farmed out left-hander Tyler Lyons is a candidate, although an 0-3 record and a 6.12 earned-run average earlier this year can't inspire a whole lot of confidence there.

Triple-A lefty Tim Cooney might also be a possibility, but does the team really want his first big league start to be in Coors Field? Other internal options are relievers Seth Maness and Nick Greenwood, although Greenwood's reliance on a breaking ball might not make him ideal in conditions where the ball simply doesn't break as much.

Another thing for certain is that Carlos Martinez, who's ached to be a starter all along, is staying in the rotation. He was effective in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Phillies after a rough second inning and will be stretched out to around 90 pitches Friday night at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

But who will join him in the rotation, at least for Wednesday? That's a question for manager Mike Matheny and Mozeliak to figure out.

X-rays are negative on Teixeira's foot

In the eighth inning of a game that already turned out of hand against the New York Yankees, Mark Teixeira was hit in the left foot by a pitch Sunday.

His first thought was that he would require a fourth disabled-list stint in the past two years due to his sixth major injury as a Yankee. He previously sustained two wrist injuries and two hamstring injuries, and he missed most of the final month of 2012 with a left calf strain.

That was why he flung his batting helmet in the style of Paul O'Neill when he walked off the field with manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donahue.

The good news was that it doesn't sound serious, and a DL stay will not be required.

Lawrie, Bautista hurt in Jays’ loss to Reds

The Blue Jays limped out of Cincinnati beaten and depleted. And the news doesn’t get any better with Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie injured and out of the lineup as they open a key three-game series against the New York Yankees at the Rogers Centre. After Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Reds — one that capped a 3-7 road trip and left the team 4-11 in its last 15 games — the Jays didn’t say anything officially about Lawrie’s broken right index finger or Bautista’s tender left hamstring.

With or without Bautista, the Blue Jays face a tough test as they try to hold on to first place in the American League East. They have enough depth with Juan Francisco taking Lawrie’s spot at third, and outfielders Anthony Gose and Kevin Pillar one call away at Triple-A Buffalo to fill in for Bautista as needed.

Toronto will likely open the series against the Yankees — stinging from an 8-0 loss to the Orioles on Oldtimers Day at Yankee Stadium on Sunday — with a lineup featuring Francisco at third, Mune Kawasaki or Steve Tolleson at second and Gose or Pillar filling in the outfield.
