            Tuesday, June 10

Rough weather expected at many ballparks Tuesday

From thunderstorms to strong winds, there is some rough weather on the way at several ballpark's across the country Tuesday.

In Cincinnati, the Reds (-106, 7.5) host the Los Angeles Dodgers, where there is a an 80 percent chance of rain and expected thunderstorms. There is will also be a seven mph wind blowing in from right field.

In Baltimore, the Orioles (-111, 9) host the Boston Red Sox. There are thunderstorms expected in the area, but just a 28 percent chance of rain.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies (-101, 7.5) host the San Diego Padres, where there is a chance of thunderstorms and a 35 percent of rain.

The Pirates (-155, 7.5) host the Chicago Cubs in Pittsburgh, where there is a 37 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorm.

In New York, the Mets host the Milwaukee Brewers (-121, 7.5). There are thunderstorms expected in the area and a 28 percent chance of rain. There will also be a five mph wind blowing out to left field.

The White Sox host the Detroit Tigers (-131, 8) in Chicago, where there will be a strong wind blowing out to right field at eight mph. There is also a 25 percent chance of showers.

Away teams have solid night against runline

If you backed road teams against the runline, you probably went home happy Monday night.

Away teams put up a respectable 7-4 mark against the runline last night, good for a 64 percent success rate.

Away favorites did most of the work going 3-1 against the runline, while away dogs went 4-3. Away dogs are still the best bet in baseball, still hitting at almost 63 percent for the season.

            Tigers' Cabrera (hamstring) still day-to-day

The good news for the Detroit Tigers is that first baseman Miguel Cabrera was feeling healthy enough to be in the starting lineup against the Chicago White Sox on Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field, and he hit a home run.

The bad news is that he started at designated hitter, and he will be monitored on a day-to-day basis for a hamstring injury that forced him to leave Sunday's game early. Manager Brad Ausmus said the issue isn't related to a groin injury that nagged Cabrera for the second half of last season and the playoffs.

Nationals-Giants low total may be illusion

Historically AT&T Park has always been a pitchers park, which explains the low 6.5 total for the Washington Nationals-San Francisco Giants game Tuesday. However, recent history seems to suggest that the teams may buck the trend.

In the 32 games this season at AT&T Park, there is an average of 7.4 runs per game scored and teams have combined for double-digit runs 11 times. The past three games in San Francisco teams have scored 11,10 and nine runs respectively.

Looking at the teams individually shows that offense has been trending upward. The Nationals have themselves averaged 6.2 runs per game over their past 10, while the Giants have tallied 4.6 rpg.

Cuddyer out 6-8 weeks with fractured shoulder socket

Yesterday the Rockies placed Michael Cuddyer on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain. Turns out it’s more than a strain: Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports: an MRI revealed that he has a non-displaced fracture of the glenoid socket in his left shoulder.

                  • Wednesday's Tip Sheet

                    June 11, 2014

Dodgers at Reds – 7:10 PM EST

                    Probable Pitchers:
                    LAD: Ryu (7-2, 3.08 ERA)
                    CIN: Cueto (5-5, 1.97 ERA)

Series recap: The Dodgers had their way with the Reds for the second straight game, enduring a two-hour rain delay in last night’s 6-2 victory as a +120 road underdog. Los Angeles improved to 4-1 in five meetings with Cincinnati this season, as the Reds haven’t scored more than three runs in any of these games.

What to watch for: Los Angeles has won each of the past four road starts made by Ryu, while the Dodgers are 4-0 in his four starts since coming off the disabled list in May. The Reds are just 2-5 since a four-game winning streak, but Cincinnati owns a 4-1 record in Cueto’s past five outings at the Great American Ballpark.

Marlins at Rangers – 8:05 PM EST

                    Probable Pitchers:
                    MIA: Turner (2-3, 5.93 ERA)
                    TEX: Darvish (6-2, 2.36 ERA)

Series recap: The Marlins and Rangers went back-and-forth on Tuesday night but Miami came out on top, 8-5 to cash as +150 away ‘dogs. Texas has now lost four straight games at home (allowing 36 runs in this span), while Miami has put together an impressive 8-0 record in interleague action.

What to watch for: The Rangers have hit the ‘over’ in seven of eight games on their current homestand, while winning nine of 11 starts made by Darvish this season. The Marlins are riding a 6-1 stretch to the ‘over’ in the last seven Game 2’s on the road, while posting a 7-1 record the past eight contests as an away underdog of +130 or higher.

Athletics at Angels – 10:05 PM EST

                    Probable Pitchers:
                    OAK: Milone (3-3, 3.68 ERA)
                    LAA: Weaver (7-4, 3.31 ERA)

Series recap: The Angels are creeping back in the AL West after beating the A’s for the second consecutive time on Tuesday, 2-1 in 14 innings. Los Angeles has held Oakland’s explosive lineup to just two runs in the first two games of their series, while improving to 3-5 this season against the A’s in eight matchups.

What to watch for: L.A. has won five straight games, while Weaver is 4-0 his past four home starts against Oakland since 2012. Oakland is stumbling through a 4-8 stretch on the road the last 12 tries, but the A’s own a 4-0 record in Milone’s past four starts overall.

Yankees at Mariners – 10:10 PM EST

                    Probable Pitchers:
                    NYY: Tanaka (9-1, 2.02 ERA)
                    SEA: Young (5-3, 3.42 ERA)

Series recap: The Mariners returned home from a 6-1 road trip only to fall to the Yankees in the series opener, 3-2 on Tuesday. Seattle lost for the fourth time in the last five opportunities in the role of a home favorite, while New York won for just the third time in the past nine games overall.

What to watch for: The Yankees send out their ace tonight as Tanaka looks to become the second pitcher in baseball to reach 10 wins this season. New York owns a 6-3 record in the last nine road contests, but the Bombers are 2-5 in the past seven Game 2’s of an away series. The M’s have won six of their past eight games off a defeat, while Seattle is 3-0 in the past three home starts made by Young, all in the underdog role.

Nationals at Giants – 10:15 PM EST

                    Probable Pitchers:
                    WSH: Roark (4-4, 2.91 ERA)
                    SF: Cain (1-3, 3.52 ERA)

Series recap: The only way to slow the Giants is apparently playing the Nationals, who grabbed the first two contests of a four-game set at AT&T Park. Washington edged San Francisco last night, 2-1 as Doug Fister outdueled Madison Bumgarner, one night after Stephen Strasburg cooled off the Giants’ lineup.

What to watch for: The Nationals are only 5-7 when Roark takes the mound, but the righty has received some tough luck with three losses by one run apiece over the last month. Washington has cashed the ‘under’ in each of Roark’s last four outings, while the Nats are 9-2 in their past 11 games overall. San Francisco has lost three straight games just once this season, while posting an impressive 7-3 mark in home Game 3’s of a series.

                    • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Not to say Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen are old (in basketball terms) but they both once played for the Seattle SuperSonics.

-- Cardinals 1, Rays 0-- Tampa Bay hasn't scored in its last 28 innings.

-- Twins 4, Blue Jays 0-- Toronto was shut out in three of its last four games.

-- 11 of the 32 NFL teams have new offensive coordinators this season.

-- Falcons' LB Sean Weatherspoon tore his achilles, is out for the 2014 season.

-- RIP Bob Welch, who died Tuesday at age 57. He won 27 games in 1990, the last MLB pitcher to win 25+ games in a season. He won two World Series rings. 57 is too young to die; life is short, people. Enjoy it while we can.

                      **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

                      13) ESPN.com had a terrific piece Tuesday on how Mack Brown stepping down as football coach at Texas had a domino effect that reached 103 coaching jobs at 47 colleges and four NFL teams. The coaching carousel can be wacky sometimes, especially in football, where there are so many assistant coaches on eeach team.

                      12) Garrick McGee went 5-19 as head coach at UAB the last two years, then resigned to become offensive coordinator at Louisville, working for old friend Bobby Petrino. Why, you say? Well, one more bad year at UAB and he was probably going to get fired anyway, plus, a coordinator’s job at Louisville pays $100K more a year than the head coach at UAB. Not too bad to lake a lesser job that pays more.

                      11) Cleveland Browns turned down chance to be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks; what would happen if every team turned them down? It has to be at least a little bit of a distraction, right? No one hates distractions like football coaches.

                      10) Browns’ coach Mike Pettine knows a little bit about reality TV; back 15 or so years ago, Pettine was featured along with his father, a legendary high school coach in eastern Pennsylvania, in one of the earliest sports reality shows. It was pretty interesting show; wonder if it’ll find its way back onto TV this fall?

                      9) New York Jet coaches were teaching Portuguese soccer players how to throw a football this week; why couldn’t they teach Tim Tebow how to throw one when he played for them?

                      8) A newspaper in Columbia, MS fired a sportswriter after he called Lafayette, LA “…the worst place on earth” after covering the Ole Miss/UL-Lafayette baseball series this weekend. Not sure if the guy was trying to be funny or if he truly dislikes southwestern Louisiana, but he lost his job because of it.

                      7) Marlins’ pitcher Henderson Alvarez got hurt covering first base Sunday against the Cubs, when a bad throw forced him to jump and he pulled a muscle. Alvarez had a scoreless streak of 26 innings at the time, but lost it when the pitcher who replaced him allowed the inherited runners to score, so a bad deal all around there.

Miami would be a serious playoff contender had Jose Fernandez not gotten hurt; if Alvarez is out for any length of time, it could be a disaster for this year’s Fish.

                      6) Brewers/Giants are both in first place; their CFs are both ex-Mets. On 12/7/11, the Mets traded Angel Pagan to the Giants for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez, a relief pitcher- not good.

On 2/2/08, Mets traded Gomez and three other players to the Twins for Johan Santana, a move that at least helped the Mets for a while, since Santana was an excellent pitcher. Gomez, however, has turned into a really good player for the Brew Crew. This is why you have to wait a while to fully judge a trade.

                      5) Speaking of the Twins, their first round draft pick has already signed for $3.85M, not a bad payday for a high school kid. Smart of the kid to sign quickly, now he can go play rookie ball and get his feet wet in pro ball.

                      4) You know that tote board in New York where they track the national debt and it runs endlessly? Donald Sterling’s lawyers must have a clock like that counting billable hours as they rack up with this nitwit insisting on suing the NBA in a non-winnable case that will just cause everyone stress and embarrassment, other than the lawyers, who will make a freakin' fortune.

                      3) Pittsburgh Steelers are going to run more no-huddle this year? Mike Tomlin finally figured out that he has one of the best QBs in football and wants to let him run things? Smart move, if it happens.

                      2) New York Knicks are paying Phil Jackson $12M a year, Derek Fisher $5M a year and neither has ever done his current job before. Sounds like the Knicks.

                      1) Monday night was just the second time all season (April 7 the other) where no game saw the winning run score after the sixth inning. Not a lot of drama Monday- there are usually always a game or two that turn on a late rally.

                              Underdogs rule the diamond Tuesday

Tuesday was a great day to be backing underdogs against the runline in major league baseball.

Underdogs went 10-4 against the runline yesterday, a success rate of an impressive 72 percent. Road dogs did most of the heavy lifting going 6-2, while home dogs were a respectable 4-2.

Away dogs have been the best best against the runline in baseball, hitting at over 60 percent, while underdogs in general are hitting at over 63 percent.

Pitchers on the mark as unders come through

Pitchers were on their game Tuesday, as it was one of the better days to pick major league games to go under the run total.

Teams went 5-9 over/under in the majors yesterday, hitting at a mark of almost 65 percent. That is much better than the season average of just over 48 percent.

                              Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez, 15-day DL

Gonzalez underwent surgery to remove a small tumor from his left index finger. He in on the 15-day disabled list and is expected to spend two weeks recovering before resuming baseball activities.

Braves' OF Justin Upton, questionable Wednesday

Upton left Tuesday's game due to a left hamstring strain. He is questionable for Wednesday against the Rockies.
