        • Tigers look to sweep Red Sox

          May 17, 2014

          Detroit (26-12) at Boston (20-22)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET

          Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston -115, Detroit +105, Total: 8.5

Two of the top teams in the American League for years now, the Tigers and Red Sox, meet up Sunday night for the final game of their three-game weekend series.

Detroit blanked Boston 1-0 on Friday behind Max Scherzer and company. Last night, the Tigers' Rick Porcello pitched eight solid innings to win his sixth straight start and the red-hot Tigers beat the Red Sox, 6-1.

On Sunday night from Fenway Park, the Tigers will look for their fifth straight win as they attempt to sweep the Red Sox on the road.

Detroit is once again leading the AL Central this season thanks to wins in 12 of its past 15 games coming into this series. The club swept the Orioles earlier this week, outscoring them 15-7 in the three games as their pitching allowed just one run in each of the first two contests and closer Joe Nathan went a perfect 3-for-3 in save opportunities. 1B Miguel Cabrera (.295 BA) and DH Victor Martinez (.336 BA) have been hot of late and combined to go 9-for-23 in the series with two home runs and 6 RBI. Boston continues to underachieve this season, and is coming off a series loss in Minnesota.

The Red Sox nearly completed a comeback in the rubber match on Thursday, tying the game at 3-3 in the ninth inning, but could not finish the job as the Twins walked off with a 10th-inning victory. DH David Ortiz (.303 BA) had a huge series, going 8-for-14 with four homers and 6 RBI, and now has six of his 11 homers in the past 10 games.

Coming off the DL and making his first start since April 26 for the Tigers will be RHP Anibal Sanchez (0-2, 3.13 ERA) and opposing him for the host Red Sox is 32-year-old RHP Jake Peavy (1-1, 3.94 ERA) who has not figured into the decision in six of his eight starts this season.

There may not be too much of a home-field advantage in this game, as Detroit is a tremendous 11-4 on the road coming into this series, while Boston is just 10-11 at Fenway Park in 2014. This has been a nearly even matchup entering Friday with the Red Sox holding a slim 12-11 advantage since the start of 2012, while being much better at home (9-4). But the Tigers have been much better against right-handed starters this season (15-10, .600) than Boston has (10-16, .385).

Anibal Sanchez will make his first start since April 26 after being on the DL with a finger injury, and was solid this season before his injury. Sanchez has struck out 9.4 batters per nine innings and has not allowed a home run in 23 innings on the mound this year. He has given up far too many free passes though, walking 11 batters so far (4.3 BB/9), which is something he has not shown since 2009.

He has never started against the Red Sox, but did face them once in relief way back in 2006, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs, which included three home runs. DH David Ortiz has owned Sanchez in three at-bats, getting a hit each time up with two homers and 4 RBI. OF Shane Victorino has had the most experience against the veteran, going 10-for-43 (.233) with a home run, 2 RBI, four walks and seven strikeouts.

Coming into this series, the Tigers’ bullpen is 6-4 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while converting 12-of-16 save attempts. Joe Nathan (3.45 ERA, 10 saves) has finally given this team a reliable closer and he has gone 10-for-12 in save chances while being perfect in his past nine opportunities.

Jake Peavy has been putting together a solid year in his 13th big league season, but has been susceptible to a blowup every once in a while. He has twice already this year given up 9+ hits and 5+ runs while actually earning a no-decision each time. Besides that, he has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his eight starts while allowing one home run in each one of his outings. Control has been a big issue, as Peavy has walked 27 batters in just 48 innings so far (5.1 BB/9) which is much worse than his career average of 2.8 BB/9.

Peavy has not had too much success against the Tigers in his 12 career starts, going 4-5 with a 4.83 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, and has struck out 9.2 batters per nine innings. 1B Miguel Cabrera (13-for-45, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 14 K’s), OF Torii Hunter (7-for-16, 1 HR, 1 double, 1 triple, 7 RBI) and OF Austin Jackson (9-for-28, 1 HR, 2 triples, 3 RBI, 9 K’s) have all done very well against Peavy. Meanwhile, OF Rajai Davis (0-for-10, 2 K’s) and C Alex Avila (4-for-21, 1 HR, 5 K’s) have not done well in the matchup.

Coming into this series, Boston’s bullpen is 6-7 with a 3.18 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, and is 11-for-14 (79%) in its save chances. Closer Koji Uehara (1.15 ERA, 9 saves) has already struck out 24 batters while walking just three in 15.2 frames, and is perfect in his save opportunities.

          • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Buffalo Bills tried to trade up for the #1 pick to draft Sammy Watkins, before winding up with the #4 pick. Is Matt Millen advising the Bills?

-- Francisco Liriano is 0-3 in nine starts, but Pirate bullpen won all six of his no-decisions.

-- Dodgers are 8-2 against Arizona, 15-19 against everyone else.

-- Giant broadcaster Duane Kuiper was questioning the viability of still holding the World Baseball Classic, with so pitchers getting hurt. WBC forces pitches to start training earlier, which of course results in more injuries later that year when they are pitching for the teams that pay their hefty salaries.

-- Refreshing to listen to Mets’ TV announcers question/criticize team strategy; doesn’t happen a lot, but enough to give them credibility.

-- Mets-Bronx game Thursday was remarkable on two fronts: It was the first game since 1944 where two starting pitchers making their MLB debut both got hits in their first AB. De Grom’s hit was the first hit by a Met pitcher all season. It was the only game since 1900 where two starting pitchers were making their MLB debut and the game was 0-0 after five innings.

            *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

            13) Struggling Diamondbacks hired Tony Larussa to turn their program around, which is very bad news for GM Kevin Towers. Competition can be addicitive, and Larussa missed the winning/losing aspect of being part of a team. Funny that he is Kirk Gibson's boss now, seeing as Gibson's famous home run in 1988 beat the best A's team Larussa managed.

            12) Larussa was on the job for 12 hours and Arizona had already hung 18 runs on Clayton Kershaw and the hated Dodgers, beating them 18-7. Kershaw was chased during a 7-run second inning for Arizona.

            11) Speaking of the A's, Oakland pitcher Scott Kazmir got tossed in the second inning last night for bitching at plate ump Jerry Layne over balls/strikes. Because Bob Melvin is a great manager, the A's won anyway. Reliever Dan Otero threw 32 pitches and got 11 outs in relief of Kazmir, who needed 41 pitches to get four outs.

            11) Odd play in San Francisco last night; Brandon Hicks smacked a double off the right field wall, just missing a homer, but Marlin replay guys noticed that Hicks missed first base, Mike Redmond challenged it, and Hicks was called out. Because he missed first base, he doesn't even get credit for a hit.

            10) Miami's Giancarlo Stanton hit a triple to right-center, which is called triples alley because it is so deep, but later on, Stanton hit a homer in the same area, which righty hitters rarely do. Giant TV announcer have become such blatant homers; they acted like he popped out to second base. It was a titanic blast.

            9) If I'm pitching for the Mets and Juan Lagares isn't playing centerfield, I'm ticked off; Lagares is that good a fielder. He robbed Jason Werth of a home run Saturday.

            8) Phillies have already had two scoring droughts of 21+ innings this month, but they broke out of the second one in grand fashion Saturday, beating the Reds 12-1.

            7) How does BJ Upton stay in the major leagues? He has 29 hits, 56 strikeouts and is hitting .203 with nine RBI in 143 ABs. Not good.

            6) Texas Rangers have six guys on the 60-day DL, and now Martin Perez is out for the year with an elbow injury- their pitching staff has fallen apart.

            5) Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes is son-in-law of former big league pitcher Atlee Hammaker, who started the 1983 All-Star Game.

            4) Washington Nationals have to be concerned with Gio Gonzalez, who allowed eight first-inning runs in his last three starts, and is 0-2, 14.73 in last two starts.

            3) Penn State's baseball team turned two triple plays in a game vs Michigan State.

            2) Can never figure out why NBC runs a 2-hour program around a horse race, which is less than two minutes long. I mean, I understand they can sell commercials for it and they make money, but who would watch anything but the race?

            1) NHL is doing very well; league VP Bill Daly said the salary cap could go as high as $70M next year. Commish Gary Bettman isn't a popular guy, but the league is flourishing under his leadership, whether it is because of him or in spite of him.

Hitters' wind at Wrigley Field Sunday

The scoreboard operator at Wrigley Field in Chicago could be in store for a busy afternoon Sunday as wind will be blowing out the dead-center field as the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon.

Per DailyBaseballData.com, winds will blow from the southwest out to center field at 12 mph.

According to our Wrigley Field MLB Stadium page, the Over is 4-1 when wind blows out to straight-away center field at Wrigley.

The total is currently off the board for this game.

Under sizzles at MLB parks Saturday

The Under had an excellent Saturday across MLB stadiums, posting a 5-9 record Over/Under on the day.

There was one push as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 5-2 to settle on the closing 7. That clip is good enough for a 64.29 winning percentage through the 14 games.

Sunday has a full slate of games with totals ranging from 6.5 (Reds at Phillies) to 9.5 (White Sox at Astros, Padres at Rockies).

                            • Tigers, Indians hook up

                              May 19, 2014

                              Detroit (27-12) at Cleveland (19-25)

First pitch: Monday, 7:05 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Detroit -105, Cleveland -105, Total: 7.5

The AL Central-leading Tigers look to extend their six-game winning streak on Monday night in the first of three games against the struggling Indians.

Detroit has been on an absolute tear, earning a win in each of its past six contests with sweeps on the road against both the Orioles and Red Sox. The club has allowed two or fewer runs in five of those six games, and outscored opponents 28-10 over the streak. In the Sunday night game against Boston, starter Anibal Sanchez earned his first victory of the year in a 6-2 win, as DH Victor Martinez (.331 BA) hit his 10th home run of the season and 2B Ian Kinsler (.315 BA) went 4-for-5. The 2-thru-4 batters in the lineup (Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Martinez) combined to go 16-for-40 (.400) in the series with three homers and 9 RBI.

The Indians are moving in the opposite direction and sit at the bottom of the AL Central after losing six of their past eight games, including four in a row. The Athletics absolutely dominated them this weekend, scoring 30 runs over the three-game sweep while allowing a measly six runs to Cleveland’s offense. Sunday’s game was the worst, as the Indians were hammered 13-3. Much of the team's struggles have come from both 3B Carlos Santana (.152 BA) and 1B Nick Swisher (.196 BA) not being able to get hits, and they were a combined 3-for-25 with a homer and five strikeouts in the three contests against the A’s.

Getting the opportunity to start this game and extend the Tigers' winning streak is LHP Drew Smyly (2-2, 2.70 ERA). Meanwhile, the Indians hope that a red-hot RHP Corey Kluber (4-3, 3.38 ERA) can get their club back on track with another strong starting performance on the mound. Detroit has had absolutely no issues on the road, actually playing better then when at Comerica Park and is an ML-best 14-4 in away games so far. On the other hand, Cleveland is just above .500 (12-11) when getting to play in front of its hometown faithful. Going back three seasons now, the Tigers are a solid 24-15 (.615) in this matchup against their division foes while going 12-7 in all games played at Progressive Field. The teams have met for just two games so far this year, splitting them in Detroit. With Sunday’s win on the road, the Tigers are now a flawless 9-0 in away games this month, but are just 23-31 in road games after winning five or six of their previous seven games going back to the start of the 2012 campaign. Indians star 2B Jason Kipnis (oblique) remains on the DL, but is hoping to make his return before the end of the month.

Smyly was brought up originally by the Tigers to be put in their rotation, but ended up being a huge part of their bullpen last season, pitching in 63 games and going 6-0 with a 2.37 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out 9.6 batters per nine innings. The left-hander has now been put back in the rotation and has not missed a beat, allowing only six runs over his past four starts (24.1 IP). Smyly did well in his last start against the Orioles on the road Tuesday, going six innings and giving up just five hits and one run (solo HR), while striking out seven batters with only two walks. He has faced the Indians just once as a starter, getting the loss as he gave up six hits and four runs while striking out five with two walks in six innings of work on June 5, 2012. OF Michael Brantley has had a stellar start to this season and could continue hitting well as he is 4-for-7 (1 double, 1 triple) against Smyly with 2 RBI.

The two struggling hitters, 3B Carlos Santana (3-for-8, 2 doubles) and 1B Nick Swisher (2-for-6, 1 HR) have also done well against the 24-year-old. The Indians will not miss Kipnis too much in this game since he is 0-for-10 with six strikeouts in this matchup, while 3B Lonnie Chisenhall (0-for-5, 1 K) has also performed poorly. Detroit’s bullpen has pitched to a 6-4 record this season with a 4.18 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while converting 13-of-17 (77%) save chances. These relievers have been much better on the road though, with a low 2.81 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, and are 6-for-7 in saves away from home. Closer Joe Nathan (3.24 ERA, 11 saves) has now been successful at closing out the game in his past 10 attempts, but is struggling with control so far this year, as he has already walked eight batters in just 16.2 frames.

Corey Kluber has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season for the Indians in 2014 and has won each of his past two starts. He has already struck out 66 batters in 58.2 innings (10.1 K/9), and needs that since opponents have produced a .353 BABIP against him this year. Kluber was supported by 15 runs from his offense in his last start against Toronto on Wednesday, as he went seven innings and gave up just four hits and two runs while striking out nine with one walk. Over his past five starts, he has struck out 47 batters compared to just seven walks in 35.1 frames. Kluber has not done well against Detroit in his career though, putting up a 1-3 record (2-4 team record) with a 4.80 ERA and 1.49 WHIP, and has earned a no-decision in each of the past two outings. The righty actually pitched a tremendous game when he last faced them on Aug. 5, 2013, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings while allowing just six hits and striking out six with only one walk.

1B Miguel Cabrera has gone 8-for-17 with three homers and 7 RBI in his career against Kluber, while DH Victor Martinez (6-for-12) has also been great against him. On the other hand, OF Austin Jackson (2-for-11, 3 K’s), C Alex Avila (2-for-15, 4 K’s) and OF Torii Hunter (3-for-12, 4 K’s) have really not been able to find their rhythm against the Indians’ starter. While Cleveland’s bullpen was poor on Sunday (5.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 walks), they have gone 7-6 this year with a 3.36 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, while converting 12-of-16 (75%) save opportunities. Cody Allen (3.38 ERA, 1 save) and Bryan Shaw (1.80 ERA, 2 saves) are expected to split the closing duties for the time being.

                              • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Prince Fielder had played in 547 consecutive games before a neck injury ended the streak. Rangers have been pummeled by injuries this season.

-- Kevin Love apparently wants out of Minnesota so Timberwolves will have to trade him to recoup some value. Tough to win that way.

-- Oregon State is expected to name Montana coach Wayne Tinkle its new hoop coach this week; Tinkle did an excellent job with the Griz.

-- USC's leading scorer Byron Wesley will transfer to Gonzaga, be eligible to play next season.

-- Houston transfer Tashawn Thomas transfers to Oklahoma, good get for Sooners and Lon Kruger. He will apply to be eligible next season.

-- Why do pitchers bat in minor league games? Shouldn't hitters get more ABs?

                                *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                                13) Dodgers have the biggest payroll in baseball history, but they're 23-22, 8-3 against Arizona, 15-19 against everyone else. How long before Don Mattingly gets the boot? I'll ask it this way: If it was you who owned the Dodgers, your $250M going to a 23-22 team, wouldn't you want a better manager than Mattingly?

                                12) Why some teams win: Brandon Moss was released by the Phillies, released, on October 17, 2011- he signed with Oakland six weeks later. Moss hit 30 taters last year, has 36 RBI in 42 games this year-- A's made the playoffs his first two years with the team, and are in first place this year. They got him off the scrap heap.

                                11) NFL over/under win totals for this coming season: We'll get into this more later this week, but Denver-SF-Seattle have highest totals (11), while Jacksonville (4.5) has the lowest total.

                                10) Mitch Williams took a leave from MLB Network as reports of his fracas at a Little League game went public. Apparently, Williams ordered one of his 10-year old pitchers to drill the opposing pitcher, and things went downhill from there. Oy.

                                9) Mets' pitchers have one hit this season; they've allowed a hit to the opposing pitcher in each of their last five games.

                                8) Odd weekend in baseball, with only five of 45 games having winning run score in 7th inning or later; only two games like that Friday/Saturday were the Jays-Texas games in Arlington. Not a lot of drama this weekend.

                                7) Odd fact: Kevin Love's father Stan was a teammate of George Karl with the San Antonio Spurs in 1974-75.

                                6) AT&T bought DirecTV this weekend for around $49B; I'm guessing my rates are going up, but I hope the hell they at least add the Pac-12, SEC Networks.

                                5) Tigers' sweep at Fenway Park this weekend was their first one since 1983.

                                4) Golfer Charles Howell III has 25 top 10's in his PGA career; two wins, 14 second-places finishes, nine third-place finishes. If he was a race horse, they'd say he was a lousy finisher, but he's made at least $1.2M 14 years in a row, despite not having won a tournament since 2007. Not too bad.

                                3) College graduates in the Class of 2014 go out in the real world with an average student loan debt of $33,000.

                                2) Rookie umpire Jon Byrne did his first game behind the plate Sunday, Mets-Nats. Byrne is the first Australian umpire in the major leagues.

                                1) Supposedly Detroit Pistons offered their coaching job to Tom Izzo before they hired Stan Van Gundy- they got the right guy. Izzo is a great college coach, do not see him putting up with the BS most NBA coaches have to put up with.
