Braves at Marlins – 7:10 PM EST

    Probable Starters:
    ATL: Santana (3-0, 1.95 ERA)
    MIA: Alvarez (1-2, 2.73 ERA)

Series recap: The Marlins have dominated the Braves through the first two games of this set, outscoring Atlanta, 18-3. Last night, Miami cashed as an underdog in a 9-3 triumph, hitting the ‘over’ for the second straight night after the two teams finished ‘under’ the total in all three games at Turner Field last week.

Current form: Miami has won five consecutive games at Marlins Park, but the Fish are 1-4 in Alvarez’s five starts this season. The Braves own a perfect 4-0 record when Santana starts, while Atlanta is trying to avoid its first sweep of the season.

Brewers at Reds – 7:10 PM EST

    Probable Starters:
    MIL: Estrada (2-1, 2.87 ERA)
    CIN: Bailey (1-2, 6.15 ERA)

Previous series review: The Brewers suffered just their second road loss of the season in a 9-3 defeat at St. Louis. Milwaukee managed to grab two of three at Busch Stadium, compiling a terrific 11-2 record on the highway. The Reds split a pair of games with the Cubs, capped off by Wednesday’s 9-4 setback as a -170 home favorite.

Current form: Cincinnati has lost four its past five games, while posting a 1-3 record in series openers at the Great American Ballpark. Milwaukee owns a 4-1 mark when Estrada starts, including a 3-0 ledger in the underdog role. The Brewers have dominated on the road this season, while putting together a 9-1 mark to the ‘over’ the last 10 contests away from Miller Park.

Mariners at Yankees – 7:10 PM EST

    Probable Starters:
    SEA: Elias (1-2, 3.54 ERA)
    NYY: Kuroda (2-2, 5.38 ERA)

Series recap: The two teams took a seat last night due to rain in the Bronx, as the Mariners look to win the series after Tuesday’s 6-3 triumph in Robinson Cano’s return to New York. Seattle cashed as +155 road underdogs, the third straight victory at Yankee Stadium since last season.

Current form: Following an eight-game skid, the M’s have quietly won four of their last five contests, while cashing the ‘over’ in each of the last four games. Since starting 0-2, the Yankees are 7-2 the last nine games off a loss, but New York has lost each of Kuroda’s past two starts, as the team has been outscored, 24-6 in those defeats.

Blue Jays at Royals – 8:10 PM EST

    Probable Starters:
    TOR: Buehrle (4-1, 2.16 ERA)
    KC: Guthrie (2-1, 4.22 ERA)

Series recap: The Royals improved to 8-3 at home after picking up their second win in as many nights over the Blue Jays, 4-2. In both victories over Toronto, the Royals scored late runs for home favorite triumphs, while Kansas City moved to 3-1 in home Game 2’s this season.

Current form: Kansas City has compiled a terrific 13-5 record in the favorite role this season, while seeking their first home sweep of 2014. The Jays have lost six of their last seven games, but Toronto is 3-0 in Buehrle’s three road starts. The Royals have scored seven runs in each of Guthrie’s two home starts, hitting the ‘over’ each time.

Mets at Rockies – 8:40 PM EST

    Probable Starters:
    NYM: Colon (2-3, 4.50 ERA)
    COL: Nicasio (2-1, 5.67 ERA)

Previous series review: The Mets won their only game at Philadelphia, 6-1 on Tuesday as a road underdog, while Wednesday’s contest was wiped out due to rain. The Rockies return home after blowing a late 4-2 lead in last night’s extra-innings loss at Arizona, but Colorado did take two of three in that series.

Current form: Both these teams are playing well at the moment, as the Mets have won seven of their past nine games, including four straight road victories. Colorado is riding a 6-0-1 mark to the ‘over’ the last seven contests, while winning all four series openers at Coors Field this season. The Rockies have hit the ‘over’ in four of Nicasio’s five starts, including all three at home.

      May Pitchers Report

      May 1, 2014

The running of the Kentucky Derby each year signals the fact that MLB enters its 2nd month of play. And with it a handful of surprise teams take center stage. The key to sustaining will be the success, or lack of it, from the pitching staffs. With that thought in mind, let’s zero in on pitchers that will look to keep their team in the race and those that may pull up before they hit the wire.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of May. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in May team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each May over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s April list.

I’ll be back next month with June’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, enjoy the games.

      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

      *Buchholz, Clay (11-5)

Like the Red Sox themselves, Buchholz has not had the kind of success early in the season one might expect, with opposing teams hitting .333 against him in April. But like the weather in the Northeast, this is when the Boston right-hander starts warming up and victories follow.

      *Buehrle, Mark (13-3)

Yes, the crafty Toronto lefty had a last rough outing, but he finished the first month 4-1 with a 2.16 ERA. His command since the middle of last season has been impeccable and he gives the Blue Jays a shot at a victory, literally every time out. How durable is this pitcher? Since 1980, who besides Greg Maddux has thrown 200 or more innings in 13 consecutive seasons? You just figured it out!

      *Cain, Matt (13-4, 10-0 L10)

For a pitcher making ace money like San Francisco is paying him, his career record of 93-91 does not suggest a top line hurler. However, his 3.37 lifetime ERA is certainly sharp and the fact opposing clubs have only .227 against him at least suggests he’s earning his keep. As the numbers show, Matt has been raising cane with the opposition in the second month of the season.

      *Cobb, Alex (7-3)

Suffered oblique injury in April and expects to return in late May or early June.

      *Gee, Dillon (12-5)

Gee’s success has never been predicated on velocity, but all his pitches have good movement and he’s been particularly effective in the front part of the season and at Citi Field. With last year’s elbow issues behind him, expect more success from him this month.

      *Gonzalez, Gio (12-3)

The Washington lefty is wild enough with all of his pitches, which never allows opposing hitters to feel comfortable in the batter’s box. Throughout his career he’s always allowed fewer hits than innings pitched and his breaking pitches have featured sharp downward movement or big sweeping action. GG’s tough to get a read on as a hitter.

      Greinke, Zack (11-4)

Has the complete toolbox of pitches and can throw a strike with any of them on any count. Now that Greinke’s mastered the mental aspect of pitching, he’s as good a No. 2 pitcher as there is in baseball and would an ace on most staffs.

      Latos, Mat (8-3)

Had off-season knee surgery and developed elbow problems likely trying to compensate for the knee in mid-April and was shutdown. Started playing catch again at the end of April, but no specific time has been set for his return.

      Leake, Mike (8-4)

Since further developing his curveball last season, this Cincinnati pitcher is no longer two bad outings away from Triple-A like in the past. He’s not been quite as good as last year to date, leaving too many pitches in the zone and has been taken yard six times already. With warmer days ahead and chance to have a better grip on the baseball, his numbers should match last year if not improve.

      *Peavy, Jake (10-4)

While Peavy does not throw in the mid-90’s like he used to in San Diego, he become a smarter ball-chucker and still is averaging a punch-out per inning with Boston. Peavy still hides the ball well with his unique delivery and is expected to a real positive for Boston looking ahead.

      Scherzer, Max (12-6)

The 29-year old from Missouri is picking up where he left off from his Cy Young campaign, with better than a strike out an inning and a 5-to-1 K-to-walk ratio. And remember, he turned down a $144 million offer from the Tigers. Dating back to his Arizona days, the talent was in place with all the pitches, but the confidence has grown and hanging around Justin Verlander did not hurt. Scherzer’s WHIP of 1.05 is on pace for a career-low thus far in 2014.

      Vargas, Jason (12-5)

The left-hander looks far more comfortable in Kansas City than he ever did last year in his one season in Anaheim. Vargas relies a lot on deception and he’s been a magician thus far with the Royals in posting a 2.40 ERA and opponents hitting only .240 against his tosses. He’s also cashed 7 straight tickets in May.

      Vogelsong, Ryan (11-5)

Since returning to the big leagues in 2011, the Giants No. 4 or 5 starter has faced the critics just waiting for him to fail. Last season he gave them plenty to chirp about and 2014 began in much the same way with a series of poor outings before a fine performance against Cleveland his last time on the mound. Let’s see if Vogelsong can build on this and has a typical May.

      BAD MONTH PITCHERS

      Chacin, Jhoulys (4-8)

After hurting shoulder in spring training was shutdown. Chacin is coming of off good effort in rehab start and if all continues to go well should be back with Colorado this month. Given his past this month, this could be viewed a couple of ways.

      *Fister, Doug (4-12)

Fister is slated to make one more rehab start on May 2 and if that goes well will be called up by Washington.

      Garza, Matt (3-7)

While Garza’s record has never matched his ego (68-70 lifetime), he’s a steady contributor in the middle to back end of the rotation. Playing on a much improved Milwaukee club thus far in 2014, lets see if he can overcome past difficulties like he had in May previously.

      *Jackson, Edwin (4-11)

If you could make the “perfect” Chicago Cubs pitcher that personifies them, Jackson is the guy. Seldom successful on any of the nine major league teams he’s played for (79-91 record); he’s an innings-eater on a bad team and is easily replaceable for a younger and less expensive pitcher, which evidently the Cubs do not have.

      Lohse, Kyle (5-12)

Milwaukee has two starters that fit the “bad” mold, but Lohse has a real chance to turn the tide. Thus far he’s 4-1 and foes are swinging and missing frequently (40 K’s in 40 innings) and making feeble contact when they do strike the horsehide (.207 BA). It seems very likely his losing streak will end soon. FYI: he’s dropped 8 straight team starts in May.

      Nicasio, Juan (4-8)

After making a career-high 31 starts a season ago, the Rockies righty has a 5.27 ERA to begin the year, surrendering a .300 batting average. He’ll need to fix this fast or memories of past May’s will happen again.

      Nolasco, Ricky (6-12)

Nolasco used to be a bettor’s favorite on the road. Now he’s a slump-buster with a Big Gulp ERA of 6.67 and is being racked for a .347 batting average. How long will Minnesota tolerate this?

        Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Mike D'Antoni and Lakers parted ways; if he quit a job that was going to pay $4M next year, D'Antoni could already have an offer from another NBA team.

-- Kings 5, Sharks 1-- LA is just fourth NHL team to win series after trailing 3-0.

-- Raptors 115, Nets 113-- Toronto blew 23-point third quarter lead, still won.

-- Dodgers' win in Minnesota was their 10,000th win in franchise history.

-- A's swept the Rangers in Arlington, outscoring them 25-4, after Texas swept them in Oakland last week.

-- If you like betting 5-inning lines, Miami Marlins are 11-3-1 at home. Go figure.

        *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

        13) Golden State has improved a lot since Mark Jackson has been coach (98-66 in last two seasons), but there have been rumors that unless the Warriors go deep into this spring’s playoffs, he’ll be out as Golden State’s coach.

Politics are a funny thing. My question is this; with all the dysfunction the Clippers are having, even if the Warriors advanced past this round, would ownership give Jackson credit for the wins, or just write it off as LA having its own internal issues? And if the Clippers advance, would they really sack a coach who has raised their level of achievement higher than its been since the early 90’s?

        12) Donald Sterling bought the Clippers in 1981 for $12.5M; now he’s likely to get a billion when the NBA finally pushes him out of their inner circle. The $2.5M fine doesn’t seem that big anymore, does it?

        11) Speaking of which, I got my calculator out this week, and figured out that fining Sterling $2.5M is the same as fining me $1,579.95. I’d be annoyed about it, but I could afford it.

        10) Rumor Wednesday is that music mogul Joel Geffen, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Oprah Winfrey could band together to buy the Clippers- they’re all worth a lot of money. You know they're going to bust Sterling's balls by having a minority own what used to be his basketball team.

        9) All of this BS is overshadowing an excellent playoff first round; the last four Thunder-Grizzlies games have gone OT, first time two teams played four OT games in a row in the playoffs. Ever.

        8) Pretty soon, Knicks will announce Steve Kerr as their new head coach, and the New York media will forget all about the Clippers and Donald Sterling. Lakers will be hiring a new coach, and the LA media will forget too. Which is pretty much what the league wants, for this Clipper mess to go away.

        7) Pensacola, FL had 5.68 inches of rain Tuesday, in one freakin’ hour. That would be like standing in an outdoor shower for an hour.

        6) Over next four years, Dodgers owe Andre Ethier/Carl Crawford a combined $151.25M. Oy. Both are 32, neither plays a lot against lefties.

        5) If you care about such things, underdogs are 26-9-1 against the spread so far in the NBA playoffs.

        4) Best wishes to Golf Channel analyst Notah Begay, 41, who had a heart attack this week. 41 is too young for that stuff. Get well soon.

        3) Jets’ draft preparation involved visits to 263 colleges and 3,500 written player evaluations. That’s a lot of legwork to make seven selections, and then sign some free agents. By way of reference, there are 128 I-A college teams, so if they visited every one, and it is doubtful they went to the service academies, then they went to 138 non-I-A colleges, many of whom probably have one or two NFL prospects.

        2) White Sox pitcher Hector Noesi toed the slab for three different AL teams (Texas-Seattle-Chicago) just in the month of April; hard to believe that’s ever been done before.

        1) Maryland transfer Nick Faust committed to play at Oregon State; he can play his last year of college ball there in 2015-16. Question is, will Craig Robinson still be his coach then? Beavers haven’t been over .500 in Pac-12 play in six years under Robinson. Would a 7th sub-par year send the President’s brother-in-law packing?

Ryan Braun sitting out fifth straight game

Ryan Braun has avoided the disabled list so far, but tonight the Brewers right fielder is sitting out his fifth consecutive game with a strained oblique muscle.

Elian Herrera subbed for Braun in right field for the first four of those games, but the Brewers just demoted him back to the minors and will apparently use first baseman/third baseman Mark Reynolds in right field now. Not only has Reynolds never started a game in the outfield, he has a grand total of four career innings there. So that should be pretty interesting to watch.

As for Braun, a disabled list stint seems likely if only because players with oblique injuries rarely are able to return within two weeks. He was last in the Brewers’ lineup Saturday.

Kershaw to join Dodgers Monday, start against Nationals

The Los Angeles Dodgers are about to get their $215 million man back. Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to start against the Washington Nationals Monday according to Bill Plunkett.

Kershaw, who struck out nine batters over five innings in his last rehab start, has been on the DL for the Dodgers since March 29.

                        Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Saturday will be the first time ever the NBA will have three Game 7's on the same day.

-- As if this story couldn't get stranger, New York Post is reporting that Donald Sterling has prostate cancer.

-- Southern Miss hired former Nebraska coach Doc Sadler as its new basketball coach; good hire for the Golden Eagles.

-- Former Colts' GM Bill Polian thinks the Browns want Johnny Manziel.

-- Duke-Wisconsin will be the best ACC-Big 14 challenge game in December.

-- Rough day in Boston, with Bruins losing in OT and Red Sox getting swept in a doubleheader by Tampa Bay.

                        *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here......

                        13) Most surprising to me about baseball’s instant replay isa lack of clarity of when the first baseman actually has the ball on close plays on ground balls. Never dawned on me that this would become an issue, but I think everyone is getting the hang of it and there have been less screw-ups the last week or so, at least in the games I’ve watched, and I watch a lot of them.

                        12) That said, I’m not a fan of the manager walking out to the ump to stall for time as his henchmen decide whether to challenge the call. Seems like an NFL-like flag system would be better, but that’s just me. I am not missing manager/umpire arguments- never thought they added anything to the game, other than a chance for losing managers to vent their frustrations at a stationary target.

                        11) Jon Gruden was very, very enthusiastic about Fresno State’s Derek Carr as a QB prospect, much moreso than Johnny Manziel. Have to read between the lines a little; listen to what he said to Carr, then what he didn’t say to Manziel.

                        10) Tremendous college hoop tournament in Brooklyn Thanksgiving week this fall; VCU, Michigan, Villanova, Oregon. Two excellent twinbills there.

                        9) I’m little concerned for Jameis Winston; he dodged a bullet last fall with the sexual assault incident not becoming a major problem, now he gets busted shoplifting crab legs. By itself, no big deal, but at this time last year, no one knew who he was; now he has two brushes with the law. That’s a red flag; maybe its nothing, but he needs to keep his nose clean, or this could wind up being a sad story. We’ve had enough of those lately.

                        8) Last bigtime basketball recruit of this year’s class was Myles Turner; he signs with Texas, pushing Rick Barnes’ team back into the preseason top 25.

                        7) No easy way to get from Calgary to Glens Falls, NY, but that’s where the Flames are supposedly moving their AHL farm club to. Glens Falls has a 6,500-seat arena that is excellent for minor league hockey; it is Jimmer Fredette’s hometown and 45 miles north of Armadillo World HQ. Devils have a farm team in Albany, so that’s a natural rivalry right there.

                        6) Had no idea there is a statue of Mary Tyler Moore in downtown Minneapolis, throwing her hat in the air like she did at the start of every Mary Tyler Moore Show back in the 70’s. Pretty cool.

                        5) CJ Wilson is invaluable to an Angel team that lacks pitching depth; in his first six starts, Wilson threw 114-120-116-111-111-117 pitches. He gets deep in games, taking the strain off a shaky bullpen.

                        4) Over the last 145 years that people have kept track of this stuff, Wednesday was the 10th-rainiest day in history of NYC’s Central Park. That’s a lot of rain.

                        3) Brad Underwood is staying at Stephen F Austin; he turned down a couple of C-USA jobs, at Southern Miss/Marshall. Will be interested to see how long he stays at SFA, whether they’re moving up to a better league or if he is just waiting for a higher-profile team than one in C-USA to hire him.

                        2) Atlanta Braves have been shut out the last three times Alex Wood pitched. I’ll say this about the NL East; no easy outs there right now, except maybe when Miami is on the road. Marlins are playing really well at home.

                        1) MGM Grand is building a 20,000-seat sports arena in Las Vegas; do they think they can get an NBA or NHL team? I don’t know if they can or can’t, but it would be very interesting if they did. Utah Jazz played some home games in Vegas in the 80’s, before the Malone/Stockton days.
