The Padres entered Friday a +123 underdog against Jose Fernandez and visiting Miami, but erupted for a season high in runs en route to a 10-1 victory. San Diego is 4-1 in its last five games as a home dog and is listed at -102 for Saturday's rematch.

            CC Setting New Trends

New York Yankees lefty CC Sabathia is 3-1 as an underdog so far in 2014 after going just 3-9 a season ago. Sabathia and the Yankees are installed as a +121 underdog for Saturday's showdown with the host Milwaukee Brewers.

            Scherzer a Sure Under Bet

Detroit Tigers fireballer Max Scherzer has been one of the safest Under plays all season - going 1-6 O/U so far - and has gone Under in each of his previous two starts against Minnesota. Scherzer and the Tigers (-255, 8) host the Twins on Saturday afternoon; Minnesota is 21-12-1 O/U on the season.

            Pitching Notes

            * Chicago Cubs ace Jeff Samardjiza has been as hard-luck as they come, going 1-6 against the moneyline despite boasting a sensational 1.62 ERA and .285 opposing OBP. Samardjiza and the Cubs (+136, 7) face the host Atlanta Braves, who are 9-7 as a home favorite in 3014.

            * Miami hurler Nathan Eovaldi has surrendered just 10 home runs in 25 starts spanning the previous two seasons, during which the Marlins are 13-12 against the moneyline and 9-13-3 O/U.

            Hitting Notes

            * Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is hitting .373 over his previous 12 games, during which Kansas City is a sizzling 8-3-1 O/U. Hosmer and the Royals (-120, 6.5) visit the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

            * White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu is heating up again after a brief lull, racking up seven hits over his last 13 at-bats following a 5-for-27 slide. Chicago is 3-0 O/U during his resurgence after going 1-6 O/U during his slump; the White Sox (-121, 8.5) host Arizona on Saturday.

            Total Streak

Pittsburgh Pirates (6-1-1 O/U): Pittsburgh coughed up 35 runs over a five-game stretch before righting the ship in its last three contests, surrendering just eight runs en route to three straight victories.

            Prop of the Day

A narrow Pittsburgh victory looks like a strong bet Saturday; the Pirates are +375 to beat St. Louis (-121, 7.5) by exactly one run and +750 to prevail by two runs. Each of the Pirates' previous five victories have come by one or two runs.

            Key Injuries

            * The San Francisco Giants have lost first baseman Brandon Belt for approximately six weeks with a broken thumb suffered Friday night. Belt leads the team with nine home runs but was mired in an 8-for-42 slump; the Giants went 11-3 against the moneyline and 3-10-1 O/U over that span.

            * Detroit Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez (blister) threw a bullpen session Friday and appears ready to rejoin the rotation May 18 against Boston. Sanchez has been a bit of a letdown since late last season, with the Tigers going 3-7 against the moneyline in his previous 10 starts.

            Weather Watch

            * Fans at Camden Yards may welcome the wind Saturday, with gusts out to center field expected to exceed 15 mph for Baltimore's showdown with Houston (+152, 8.5). Baltimore went 13-4 while teams combined to average nearly 9.5 runs per game under similar conditions last season.

            Umpire Note of the Day

Over is 12-1 in umpire Adrian Johnson's last 13 games behind home plate. Johnson will call balls and strikes at the Rogers Centre as the Blue Jays (-115, 9.5) entertain the Los Angeles Angels.

                      • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Texas Longhorns didn't have a player taken in NFL Draft for first time since all the way back in 1937. Damn.

-- Spurs punished Portland again; Trailblazers have been down 19+ at the half in all three series games. Spurs bench has outscored Portland's, 140-43.

-- Does New England drafting QB Jimmy Garappolo mean they're trading backup Ryan Mallett to the Texans?

-- A's rallied from down 3-1 in 9th to beat Washington 4-3; Donaldson tied game with an RBI single, Jaso won it with a double off the wall.

-- Mets pinch-hit for both Lucas Duda/Travis D'Arnaud with bases loaded in their loss to the Phils last night; pinch-hitting for Duda with a kid making his debut in the major leagues seemed like a bad idea (Campbell hit a sac fly).

-- Plate umpire Scott Barry may have broken his hand when hit by a pitched ball last night in Seattle; he left the game in the third inning.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

                        13) SBNation.com ran a great chart this week about NFL teams drafting QB’s; since 1984, the Kansas City Chiefs have won only two games that were started by a QB they drafted. Next fewest are the Texans, with 26, but their franchise is only twelve years old. Last time KC won a game started by a QB they drafted was in 1987. Team that was on top of that list was Atlanta, with 387, helped greatly by Brett Favre, who was a Falcon for only his rookie season.

                        12) Whether it is Hoyer or Manziel starting at QB for Cleveland September 7, he will be the 12th different Opening Day QB for the Browns in the last 16 years; if it is Hoyer, then Manziel will probably be the 13th in 17 years in 2015.

                        11) Saw a graphic this week that would sicken any Oakland Raider fan; their #1 draft picks in 2004-05-07 are all out of the NFL now. The pick after theirs in those three years: ’04- Larry Fitzgerald, ’05- Aaron Rodgers, ’07- Calvin Johnson. Oy, thats three Hall of Famers.

                        10) Tim Duncan has played in more NBA playoff games than thirteen entire franchises have.

                        9) No Big Dozen football player has been picked in top 10 of the NFL Draft since Michigan’s Jake Long in 2008- that includes Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, etc. Not even Northwestern.

                        8) Colorado Rockies team batting average at Coors Field this year is .355, which is an amazing number, high altitude or not.

                        7) I say this every year and it is still true; if every American did his job as well as Mel Kiper Jr does his, this would be a better country.

                        6) Burlington Bees, a minor league team in the Class A Midwest League, led 17-1 after the fifth inning Wednesday, but lost 20-17; apparently their bullpen has some issues. Winning pitcher for Clinton was their seccond baseman.

                        5) Highlight game of the SEC-Big X basketball challenge next fall is the Florida-Kansas game. Thats a bigtime game for November. .

                        4) University of Maine hired a new basketball coach to a 4-year contract at $105K a year. Kentucky’s three assistant basketball coaches, the ASSISTANT coaches, make $375K/$375K/$500K a year. Wow.

                        3) Only three NBA coaches have won their first four playoff road games: Mike Dunleavy, Pat Riley, Randy Wittman.

                        2) I've been a Ram fan since I was six years old; I hope Michael Sam is a great football player who helps the Rams win at least one Super Bowl. I don't give a rat's ass who he has sex with; I'm already tired of hearing about that aspect of it.

If you're good enough you play; if not, then you get cut. If you think Sam is the only gay pro athlete, you're an ostrich. We're all Americans, we should all have the same rights, whether we agree with each others' lifestyle or not.

                        1) Roger Goodell had to be very relieved Sam got drafted; league would've been ripped to shreds by the media if he hadn't been.
