Monday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Samardzija seeks first win
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Getting Pushy

The Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates earned a push Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 Washington win. It was the second push of the series, giving both teams seven on the season - tied for second-most in the majors behind only the Atlanta Braves (nine).

                    Rays a Rare Underdog

The Tampa Bay Rays haven't been an underdog against Toronto in their last 10 games, but find themselves a +133 longshot entering Monday's series opener at the Rogers Centre. The teams split those 10 meetings, with the Jays taking two of three in their last encounter in Toronto.

                    Samardzija Seeking Runs

Chicago Cubs hurler Jeff Samardzija looks for his first win of the season Monday afternoon against the host San Francisco Giants (-135, 7). The Cubs have lost each of Samardzija's last seven starts despite the ace right-hander allowing just eight earned runs over 47 innings in that span.

                    * Los Angeles Angels right-hander Tyler Skaggs enters Monday's encounter with the host Seattle Mariners (+123, 7.5) ranked fifth in the majors in money earned ($709) and is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in three road starts. Skaggs has also been a strong Over play, going 7-2 O/U on the season.

                    * Baltimore Orioles righty Chris Tillman was shelled for eight runs in just one inning of work last time out for his first loss against the moneyline in five starts as an underdog so far in 2014. Tillman and the Orioles (+126, 8) open an interleague series in Milwaukee on Monday afternoon.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * Atlanta Braves slugger Evan Gattis swatted a pair of home runs in Sunday's drubbing of the Rockies, giving him 10 for the season. Atlanta is 7-1 S/U and 2-5-1 O/U in games featuring at least one Gattis homer entering Monday's interleague tilt with visiting Boston (+117, 7).

                    * New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter had a season-high four hits en route to a 7-1 triumph over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Jeter is heating up after a slow start and now has four multi-hit efforts in his last nine games; the Yankees are 2-2 S/U and 2-2 O/U in those contests.

                    Totals Streak

Colorado Rockies (0-5 O/U): The league's most vaunted offense has fallen on tough times of late, scoring just six runs over its previous four games. The Rockies capped the subpar stretch with a 7-0 loss at the hands of the Atlanta Braves (-166) on Sunday afternoon.

                    Prop of the Day

The Giants are +120 underdogs to score the first run of the game against Samardzija and the Cubs, but have been strong in the early going all season. San Francisco leads the majors with a .322 first-inning batting average and have a league-high 38 runs in the opening frame.

                    Injury Notes

                    * Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill left Sunday's game against the New York Mets after fouling a ball off his ankle, and is considered questionable for Monday's game against visiting San Diego (+110, 8.5). Arizona is 0-8 O/U in the last eight games Hill has played.

                    * Reds right-hander Mat Latos threw four innings in a rehab start Sunday as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury. Latos, who has yet to throw an inning for Cincinnati this season, went 20-12 against the moneyline and 15-16-1 O/U in 32 starts last year.

                    Weather Watch

                    * Turner Field will see wind blowing out to center field at 6 mph for the game between Atlanta and Boston. Teams averaged a paltry 5.5 runs over eight games under similar wind conditions in 2013, well below the stadium average of 7.46.

                    * Wind at AT&T Park will blow out to center field at 12 mph when the Giants entertain the Cubs. Teams averaged 1.4 home runs in 30 games with the wind blowing out to center at between 10 and 20 mph last season - slightly more than the stadium average of 1.35.

Wind at Citi Field signals low scoring game

High winds at Citi Field could favor pitchers today.

It's looking like the wind will play a significant factor in Monday's matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Mets. Gusts of up to 15 mph are projected to hit The Big Apple by gametime with the wind carrying the ball out to right field.

In games when the wind is blowing towards right this season the over/under is 5-10 with an average of 6.46 runs per game. The total for the game is currently at seven.

Brandon Cumpton takes the mound for the Pirates (0-1, 4.26 ERA) facing Jacob deGrom (0-2, 2.77 ERA) of the Mets.

Scattered thunderstorms heading to Target Field

Poor weather is on its way to Minnesota.

Mother Nature could throw a wrench into the plans of the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins at Target Field Monday afternoon. Forecasts are calling for scattered thunderstorms all day with a 50 percent chance of precipitation at start time, increasing to 60 percent as the game progresses.

Starting pitchers for the game are Nick Tepesch (2-1, 3.09 ERA) for the Rangers and Kevin Correia (2-5, 6.52 ERA) for the Twins. Minnesota is currently a -105 favorite.

                      Under trending in Pirates-Mets meetings

The Under has been a hot bet in recent meetings between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets.

The last four meetings between the two National League clubs have gone under the total, but this will be the first meeting this season.

Jacob deGrom gets the start for the Mets, while Brandon Cumpton is slated to get the start for the Bucs.

Miguel Cabrera, Detroit - Prob Mon

Cabrera had to leave Sunday's game due to hamstring soreness but is expected to return Monday against the Athletics.

Hanley Ramirez, LA Dodgers - Ques Mon

Ramirez is dealing with a left calf injury and did not play Sunday. He is expected to undergo tests on Monday in order to determine the severity of the injury and is questionable to play against the Reds.

Moreland taking over at first base for injured Fielder

There now is a small sample of evidence as to how the Texas Rangers are

going to handle the season-long loss of Prince Fielder -- for the short term anyway.

Manager Ron Washington will hand Fielder's first-base spot back to Mitch Moreland and

will bat him third for at least a while under the new reality of a lineup that no longer features big boppers.

Left fielder Shin-Soo Choo returns to leadoff because he hits better there than in the No. 3 spot. He took a total of 15 RBIs into Sunday's game at Detroit, not what teams expect out of one of the prime spots in the batting order.

Center fielder Leonys Martin goes out of the leadoff spot into a niche in the bottom part of the order.

                          • Dodgers battle Reds

                            May 27, 2014

Cincinnati (22-27) at Los Angeles (28-24)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:10 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: Los Angeles -155, Cincinnati +145, Total: 6.5

The Dodgers’ pitching staff looks to continue its dominant performances when the team plays the second of three games against the Reds on Tuesday night.

Cincinnati has been playing way below its usual standards this season and comes into this contest mired in a three-game losing skid. The Reds have run into some tremendous starting pitchers in those three contests and were nearly on the bad side of a perfect game, as Hyun-Jin Ryu went seven flawless innings against them on Monday before allowing three runs in the eighth inning of the Dodgers' 4-3 victory. Cincinnati's offense has averaged just 2.8 runs per game over its past 10 contests, as the club is not getting any production from the middle of their order as 2B Brandon Phillips and 3B Todd Frazier have combined to go 5-for-25 with seven strikeouts over the past three games.

Los Angeles has won five of its past seven games, yet still sit 4.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West standings. The team has been treated to two straight stellar starts, with Josh Beckett throwing his first career no-hitter on Sunday night followed by Ryu's gem. OF Yasiel Puig (.345 BA) is living up to his hype from a tremendous rookie campaign, and has gone 12-for-25 over his past seven games with three doubles, a triple, 1 HR, 3 RBI, five runs and six walks. The pitching matchup for Tuesday should be solid, as one of the better surprises this year, RHP Alfredo Simon (6-2, 2.31 ERA), goes up against former Cy Young recipient RHP Zack Greinke (7-1, 2.01 ERA). Playing on the road has not gone well for the Reds so far with a record of 10-15 in away games, while the Dodgers are just 10-13 when playing at home this year.

With Monday’s victory, Los Angeles is now 8-6 in this matchup over the past three seasons, going an impressive 6-2 in its home games during that stretch, with 10-of-13 games going Under the total. The Dodgers have not been able to string together wins this year, and are 1-8 after two or more consecutive wins. On the other hand, Greinke is 23-4 when pitching as a favorite of -150 or more in the past three years. On the injury front, 1B Joey Votto (knee) will miss this game for Cincinnati while C A.J. Ellis (ankle) was just placed on the 15-day DL for the Dodgers after injuring himself during the celebration of Beckett's no-hitter. L.A. star SS Hanley Ramirez (calf) is also sitting this one out.

Alfredo Simon has put together a solid career thus far, but most of it has been a reliever, with him coming out of the pen in 186 games and starting just 28 over his seven-year MLB tenure. While he has been great for Cincinnati, there are a few concerns. His BABIP is just .216 while he is stranding 90.7% of runners on base. With a low K-rate of just 5.6 K/9, his numbers are going to inevitably get worse. Simon has also already allowed eight home runs in his first 58.1 innings (1.23 HR/9). Despite all that, his past two outings have been tremendous with him totaling 14.1 innings while allowing just one run on 10 hits with a 14:2 K/BB ratio in two winning efforts. Simon has never faced the Dodgers as a starter, and threw just 2.1 frames in relief against them over his career, giving up two hits and a run while striking out two.

The Dodgers’ batters have not seen Simon much, as 1B Adrian Gonzalez (1-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 walks) has had the most experience in the matchup. Simon will also need to be careful when facing OF Yasiel Puig who has hit 22 of his 25 extra-base hits against righties this season. The Reds’ bullpen has not done well this year, going 4-9 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, and is a subpar 10-for-17 (58.8%) in save chances. Aroldis Chapman (2.57 ERA, 4 saves) being back in the ninth inning has provided some stability though, and he has 12 strikeouts in his first seven innings of work.

Zack Greinke may be the second-best starter on his own ballclub, but he would be the ace for most clubs, as he has posted an ERA below 3.50 in four of the past six years while having a record of 53-16 (.768) since the start of the 2011 season. He has struck out 65 batters in his first 58.1 innings this year and has once again showed tremendous control with just 14 walks in that time. Greinke has yet to allow more than two earned runs in any start this season, but has had trouble getting very deep into his outings, averaging just 5.2 innings per start. He has been great in eight career starts against the Reds, going 4-1 (5-3 team record) with a 2.95 ERA and 0.95 WHIP, while not earning a victory against them since mid-2012. He has recorded double-digit strikeouts in four of the eight meetings.

No player on Cincinnati has done very well in his career against Greinke, and the only two hitters that have left the yard are OF Jay Bruce (4-for-25, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 K’s) and OF Ryan Ludwick (2-for-17, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 8 K’s). C Devin Mesoraco, 2B Brandon Phillips, 3B Todd Frazier and SS Zack Cozart are a combined 8-for-48 (.167) against the righty with 2 RBI and 15 strikeouts. The Dodgers relievers have gone 4-12 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.42 WHIP this year while getting the save in 16-of-20 (80%) chances. Kenley Jansen (3.91 ERA, 15 saves) is 15-for-17 in save opportunities himself while striking out a hefty 37 batters in 23 innings on the mound (14.5 K/9).
