Blazers at Wizards - 7:05 PM EST

    Portland: 34-13 SU, 25-22 ATS
    Washington: 23-23 SU, 25-21 ATS

The Wizards found a way to slow down the Thunder on Saturday night and snap Oklahoma City's 10-game winning streak. Washington picked up a 96-81 victory over OKC as five-point underdogs to cover its third straight game against a top-tier Western Conference opponent. However, the Wizards haven't covered consecutive games at the Verizon Center in two months, while posting a 2-8 ATS record the last 10 home contests.

Portland failed to cover in Saturday's 106-103 home victory over Toronto as seven-point favorites, as the Blazers led by as many as 19 points. Terry Stotts' club has struggled against the number of late, cashing just once in the last seven games, while putting together a 3-6 SU/ATS record the past seven road contests. The Blazers have dominated Eastern Conference foes on the highway, going 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS this season.

Grizzlies at Thunder - 8:05 PM EST

    Memphis: 26-20 SU, 22-23-1 ATS
Oklahoma City: 38-11 SU, 29-20 ATS

The Grizzlies keep winning and improving their playoff positioning by the day after grabbing their sixth consecutive victory on Saturday against the Bucks. Memphis didn't cash as 12 ½-point favorites, but the Grizzlies have limited each team during this hot streak to 90 points or less. The 'under' stretch for Memphis is on an unbelievable run, going 9-1 the last 10 games, with the lone 'over' coming against Milwaukee.

This defensive change came about when Marc Gasol returned to the Memphis lineup on January 14 in a 90-87 home victory over Oklahoma City. Following that defeat, the Thunder ran off 10 consecutive wins, but that streak ended in Saturday's loss at Washington. OKC has compiled a 9-2 ATS record since the loss at Memphis, while returning home after playing six of its last seven games on the highway.

Spurs at Pelicans - 8:05 PM EST

San Antonio: 34-13 SU, 22-25 ATS
New Orleans: 20-26 SU, 21-23-2 ATS

The Spurs have hit a rough spot of late, losing three of their past four games, as San Antonio needed a late rally to escape past Sacramento on Saturday. Gregg Popovich's team edged the Kings, 95-93, but couldn't cash as 10 ½-point home favorites, the fourth straight ATS defeat for the Spurs. San Antonio has beaten New Orleans twice this season, including a 101-95 victory in the Big Easy last month, but the Pelicans have covered five straight home meetings.

The Pelicans have looked good recently, winning five of their last seven games, including Saturday's wire-to-wire victory over the Bulls. Since failing to cover six straight contests to start January, New Orleans has cashed in eight of the last 11 games, including a 4-2 ATS record at home. However, the Pelicans have lost three of their last four games off a home victory, while putting together a 5-1-1 mark to the 'under' the past seven home contests.

Clippers at Nuggets - 9:05 PM EST

Los Angeles: 34-16 SU, 29-21 ATS
    Denver: 22-23 SU, 21-24 ATS

The Clippers continue to win with Chris Paul out of the lineup, posting an 11-4 record in the 15 games without the All-Star point guard. Los Angeles owns a 5-3 SU/ATS the last eight games away from Staples Center, but has lost four of the past five road contests against Western Conference competition. The offense has topped the 100-point mark in 11 of 15 games without Paul, while scoring below 92 points in all four losses.

The Nuggets are expected to get point guard Ty Lawson back on Monday night after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury. Denver could have used Lawson, as the Nuggets are coming off consecutive home defeats to Charlotte and Toronto. Brian Shaw's club averaged 94 points per game in those losses following 13 straight games scoring at least 100 points. The last time the Nuggets faced the Clippers back in December, Los Angeles dominated Denver, 112-91 as 8 ½-point home favorites.

          Monday, February 3

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Away favorites trend still a hot bet
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the past seven days, away favorites have posted an 11-3 record against the spread. That equals a great winning percentage of 78.6 percent for bettors.

Monday provides a few opportunities to jump on this spot. The Portland Trail Blazers are 1.5-point faves at the Washington Wizards, the New York Knicks are 6.5-point faves at the Milwaukee Bucks, and the San Antonio Spurs are 4-point faves at the New Orleans Saints.

At the time of writing, there are four games off the board.

                Monday, February 3

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's hottest and coldest NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Hottest ATS - Phoenix Suns (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Not even a long-term injury to talented guard Eric Bledsoe has been able to slow down the Suns, who remain one of the best stories in the NBA so far this season. The Suns used a four-win week to vault past the Golden State Warriors and into second place in the Pacific Division, 3.5 games back of the first-place Los Angeles Clippers. Two of the covers were by one point or fewer, but a double-digit victory in Philadelphia and a surprising win in Indiana showed that the Suns' most recent hot streak is no fluke.

Coldest ATS - Cleveland Cavaliers (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

Things are quickly going south for the Cavaliers, who looked like contenders for a playoff berth early in the season but are flaming out so far in January. Things reached a new low last week, when Cleveland lost home games against Phoenix and New Orleans before heading out on the road and getting beaten soundly by New York and Houston. Rumors persist that there is friction in the locker room, though franchise point guard Kyrie Irving quelled some of the scuttlebutt by insisting he'd like to remain in Cleveland - at least for now.

Best Over play - Atlanta Hawks (2-1 SU, 3-0 O/U)

Atlanta has consistently been one of the best Over plays in the Eastern Conference this season and last week saw a continuation of that trend. After opening the stretch with a heart-wrenching 111-109 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Hawks regrouped to defeat Philadelphia 125-99 and topple Minnesota 120-113. The team has been relying on a balanced scoring attack, as 10 players scored at least seven points against the 76ers and eight reached the plateau against the Timberwolves.

Best Under play - Chicago Bulls (1-2 SU, 0-3 O/U)

Chicago has assumed its perch as the best Under play in the NBA following yet another low-scoring week. Despite boasting some of the lowest totals of the week, the Bulls delivered three straight Unders with a 95-86 loss to the Timberwolves, a stunning 96-86 triumph in San Antonio and an 88-79 defeat at the hands of host New Orleans. Chicago has gone under in four consecutive games and six of the previous eight, showing off its trademark stingy defense but having trouble generating much in the way of offense.

                Surveying the schedule

The Los Angeles Clippers have had one of the most grueling schedules of any NBA team over the past two and a half weeks, playing eight of their previous 10 games away from the Staples Center. You can make it nine of 11 when the Clippers kick off the new week in Denver Monday night. But that's followed by a five-game homestand that includes games against Miami, Toronto and Philadelphia. With Los Angeles having seen its lead in the Pacific shrink, the run of home games couldn't have come at a better time.

                      Fact or Fiction

                      January 31, 2014

The first three months of the NBA season is now said and done with, and that means that we are heading into the second-half of the NBA season. Check out some of the hot topic items as we head into February for NBA betting fans, as we decipher which are fact and which are fiction.

                      FACT

The Indiana Pacers Have Troubles With Transition Teams: The Phoenix Suns certainly proved that fact over the course of the last week and a half, beating up these Pacers twice in that stretch with tremendous offensive outings. Though we don't think it is going to help the aging Miami Heat win the East, it could lay out the formula for some teams in the Eastern Conference to come out of nowhere and challenge the Pacers in the playoffs if they aren't careful. Center Roy Hibbert is completely taken out of these fast-paced games, and he's a big piece of the puzzle for Indiana.

The Chicago Bulls Need To Trade Kirk Hinrich For a Swingman: The Bulls dealt away their best swingman in F Luol Deng just a few weeks ago, but the players on the court have been buzzing and have this team in legit contention to be the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. Chicago almost has to go for it at this point, and rumors of G Kirk Hinrich being dealt for F Harrison Barnes seem to be persisting. It would be a great trade for both sides, and it would give Chicago the ability to continue the growth of G DJ Augustin and give them a legit small forward who can stretch the floor and take some pressure off of the bigs to get the job done offensively.

These Bucks Are As Bad As Those Bobcats: You know which Charlotte Bobcats team we're talking about. The ones which went on an epic losing streak and had one of the worst records that the NBA has ever seen. No, the Bucks aren't only going to win 10 games this year, but they really don't show any signs of improvement, and they really aren't all that young of a team either. Point guard Brandon Knight is really the only man that this franchise can build around, and after letting everyone walk last season and making that ridiculous deal with the Orlando Magic to get shooting guard JJ Redick for a push towards the No. 8 seed in the East, it's tough to think that management really has any clue about what it’s doing.

                      FICTION

The Toronto Raptors Are Legit Eastern Conference Contenders: Just because you're the leaders of the Atlantic Division doesn't mean you have a legit gripe to be a playoff contender this year. The Raptors are paper thin, and outside of PG Kyle Lowry and SG DeMar DeRozan, we aren't all that impressed. That bench isn't used nearly enough, and the team is going to be worn down. Even if Toronto, which has won and covered four out of five, does win the Atlantic Division, don't be surprised if a team like the Washington Wizards or Atlanta Hawks takes it out of the playoffs in the opening round.

By March, the Los Angeles Lakers Will Be Dangerous Again: Yeah… no they won't. G Kobe Bryant should be back in the fold by then, but we just don't see what good any of that does. C Pau Gasol is still a me-first player in the paint, and though G Jodie Meeks, G Nick Young, and F Ryan Kelly have all evolved, they aren't ready to step up and become role players for Bryant, an aging G Steve Nash, and G Steve Blake. The Lakers are a mess, and even getting healthy isn't going to change any of that. Unfortunately, the Buss family is just too ego-driven to concede and trade any and all assets that the team has.

The Phoenix Suns as Western Conference Contenders: Phoenix is getting there for sure. But even though the Suns exposed the Indiana Pacers over the course of these last two games in scoring 226 points in two duels against Indiana, we still don't think it is a legit contender. Winning four games in five nights on the East Coast is tough, but these games, save for the last one against the Pacers, were all suspect. Wake us up when the Suns have an inside game. These Suns are no better than the Suns that kept coming up short year after year with Mike D'Antoni calling the shots, and the end results this year will be no different. I will say that coach Jeff Hornacek certainly has this club on the right track, but don’t get crazy and start buying up Suns future tickets to win the West!

-- The Suns are 13-0 OU (15.77 ppg) since Mar 28, 2013 at home after PJ Tucker scored fewer than 10 points in a game where they did not cover by 19+.

                        CHOICE TREND:

-- The Bobcats are 12-0 ATS (7.96 ppg) since Dec 10, 2004 on the road with at least one day of rest after a double digit loss in which their field goal attempt per turnover ratio was at least eight.

                        ACTIVE TRENDS:

-- The Lakers are 0-8 ATS (-10.88 ppg) since Feb 21, 2002 on the road with at least one day of rest when they have lost their last three games SU and ATS.

-- The Suns are 7-0 OU (15.21 ppg) since Mar 16, 2010 at home after Channing Frye scored fewer than 10 points the last two games and they won the last game.

                          Inside the Paint - Tuesday

                          February 4, 2014

February has arrived which means football is officially over and basketball becomes the biggest attraction at the betting counter for the next five months. The Association only had one game played on Sunday but Monday’s card featured 11 games and some of the results from last night could be summed up as strange.

For starters, the first three games on the board were all on pace to be shootouts and easy ‘over’ winners.

                          1st Half - Indiana 59 Orlando 50
                          Final – Indiana 98 Orlando 79 (UNDER 189)

                          1st Half - Washington 55 Portland 54
                          Final – Washington 100 Portland 90 (UNDER 208)

                          1st Half – Miami 63 Detroit 57
                          Final – Miami 102 Detroit 96 (UNDER 206)

Including those results, the ‘under’ produced a 6-5 mark.

As far as sides, favorites went 8-3 straight up and 6-5 against the spread. The biggest underdog to cash was Milwaukee, who knocked off New York 101-98. The Bucks were catching eight points and listed as high as 3/1 odds (Bet $100 to win $300 on the money-line). Other home underdogs to win on Monday were Washington (+1) against Portland and Denver (+1) versus the L.A. Clippers.

New Orleans could’ve joined that group but the team collapsed in its 102-95 loss to San Antonio at home. The Pelicans were leading the Spurs 76-64 after three quarters and they were catching 3 ½-points only to be outscored 38-19 in the final 12 minutes.

Including the Spurs’ victory, visitors only went 2-9 last night.

Bettors have four games to focus on Tuesday and the oddsmakers have posted some healthy numbers in three of the matchups.

                          Indiana at Atlanta

Indiana will be looking to avenge a 97-87 loss at Atlanta on Jan. 8 as a four-point road favorite. For the rematch, oddsmakers opened the Pacers as 3 ½-point road favorites and the number has dipped to 2 ½ at most shops.

Indiana has been a solid investment on the road this season, going 14-8 SU and 13-9 ATS. However, fatigue could be a factor tonight with the Pacers beating Orlando 98-79 at home last night. On zero days rest this season, Indiana has gone 5-6 SU and 3-8 ATS. Plus, Atlanta has played since Saturday when it defeated Minnesota 120-113. Including that win, the Hawks have gone 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS in their last four games.

Total players could be scratching their head on this matchup considering the Pacers have been a solid ‘under’ (28-19) look this season and the Hawks have been a great ‘over’ team (29-17). Atlanta has also watched the ‘over’ go 8-1 in its last nine games. Tonight’s number is hovering between 198 and 199 points.

                          L.A. Lakers at Minnesota

The Timberwolves opened as 12-point home favorites over the Lakers and the number has dropped to 10 ½ points. Los Angeles won’t have Pau Gasol (groin) in the lineup but it is expected to have guards Steve Blake and Steve Nash on the floor.

Even with the boost in the backcourt, it’s hard to make a case for the Lakers, who have dropped six straight and 12 of 15 in 2014. Defensively, the Lakers have given up 100-plus in 14 of their last 15 games, which has helped the ‘over’ go 12-2-1 during this span. Minnesota has had an up and down season but the club has gone 7-3 both SU and ATS in its last 10 spots as a favorite and that includes a run of four straight covers.

                          Chicago at Phoenix

The Suns have been the best team at the betting counter this season (32-14 ATS) and while tonight’s number is high (-8), it’s certainly deserving. Phoenix has won and covered five straight and all of the margins have been by eight points or more and all against teams from the Eastern Conference.

Do you lay the points tonight versus Chicago?

The Bulls have gone 1-3 both SU and ATS in their last four, which included last night’s embarrassing 99-70 loss at Sacramento. Chicago did defeated Phoenix 92-87 on Jan. 7 as a two-point home underdog but it was rested for that matchup and that won’t be the case tonight. The Bulls have gone 4-6 SU and 6-4 ATS on zero days rest this season but they’ve played better on no rest lately. Chicago has gone 3-0 both SU and ATS in its last three back-to-back situations.

The Bulls have gone 5-12 SU and 6-11 ATS versus the Western Conference this season while the Suns have produced an 11-6 SU and 12-5 ATS record against the East.

                          Charlotte at Golden State

The Warriors and Bobcats conclude Tuesday’s action from the Bay Area and the oddsmakers believe Golden State will cruise to another win at home. The Warriors opened as 9 ½-point favorites and they should be ready to go since they haven’t played last Friday when they defeated the Jazz 95-90 on the road. Some of you might be hesitant to lay points with Golden State, considering its just 6-8 ATS in its last 14 games as a favorite.

Charlotte has been a tough team to gauge this season but it should be noted that it has already eclipsed last year’s win total and if the playoffs started today, the Bobcats would be the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bobcats have been much better on the road this season, going 10-15 SU and 15-9 ATS. However, Charlotte hasn’t been able to answer the bell as a heavy underdog. When catching double digits this season, the ‘Cats are 0-6 SU and 3-3 ATS.

Kemba Walker (ankle) is listed as ‘questionable’ for Charlotte and so is Golden State forward David Lee (hip).

                            Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Thunder 86, Grizzlies 77-- No one on Memphis scored more than 13.

-- Syracuse 61, Notre Dame 55-- Quick turnaround for Orange after their overtime win Saturday night.

-- Villanova 81, Xavier 58-- Third straight loss for Musketeers.

-- Bucks 101, Knicks 98-- Most overrated franchise in sports loses to a team that is now 9-39. But hey, Carmelo had 36.

-- Nuggets 116, Clippers 115-- Randy Foye drained a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to win an exciting game.

-- Iowa State 98, Oklahoma State 97 3ot-- Cyclones win in Stillwater for first time since 1988. Tremendous ballgame.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                            13) If I’m the Seahawks, I do something proactive with Russell Wilson’s contract, and get this baseball bug out of his system. He’s making under $700,000 a year; he obviously is going to get a big payday someday, so give him a chunk of it now, with the provision he stop with the baseball. Curious to see how this all turns out. If I ran an NFL franchise, my QB wouldn’t be playing another sport.

                            12) NFL dodged a huge weather bullet this weekend; my cousin teaches school on Long Island, they had a snow day Monday, with 8+ inches of white stuff falling in the NY/NJ area. They were lucky this time, missing the storm by 16 hours or so, but luck only lasts so long.

                            11) My opinion is that the NFL needs to improve the quality of its product, which slipped a lot this year. Less off-season practice hasn’t resulted in better football. This Super Bowl might’ve been the worst NFL game I saw all season. At some point, the product has to become important again; right now, avoiding lawsuits seems like the league’s priority, but that’s going to have to change.

                            10) South Point Casino’s Jimmy Vaccaro said his house had a higher Super Bowl handle than last year, with roughly 40% of the action on prop bets. I’m telling you, the 44-page PDF file LVH put out was a classic. Lot of imagination went into some of the more obscure props.

                            9) Glad to report that this: A guy I work with, his nephew was at the Super Bowl in New Jersey this weekend and met Mike Ditka, got his picture taken with him. Says Iron Mike is a good guy. Good to hear.

                            8) Read something on Twitter today that of 25 states that have pro sports teams, Texas, Florida and Washington are only three that do not have a personal income tax, which makes it beneficial for players to play there.

                            7) Why teams win: Russell Wilson was a 3rd round pick; Richard Sherman, Malcolm Smith (5th rounders), while Doug Baldwin/Jermaine Kearse were both undrafted free agents. That kind of front office legwork is how you win. Only four of Seattle’s 53 players were on the team before Schneider, Carroll took charge of the franchise.

                            6) Kevin/Craig Stadler will be first father/son to play in same Masters in April; will they pair the father/son together, or do they keep the seniors together and the regular Tour players together? One cool thing about golf; when Kevin Stadler won Sunday, you could see how thrilled he was; we were witnessing one of the best, if not the best moment of his life.

                            5) I follow a lot of people on Twitter, a lot. There is always dissent on topics, usually a lot of it. Did not read one negative comment about the halftime entertainment Sunday, so that’s good.

Everyone agreed it was a top-flight show; unusual for everyone to agree.

                            4) NFL doesn’t pay those acts that perform at halftime, but Bruno Mars has a deal with Pepsi and here’s another way they get paid; tickets for the Bruno Mars concert here in Albany later this year went on sale Monday morning at 10am; they were lined up Monday morning outside the arena, waiting for tickets. Can’t beat free advertising, not the kind the NFL can provide.

                            3) Looks like David Price will pitch for the Rays this season after all; if team struggles in first half, they could try and deal him in July, but what will they get for an expensive, talented pitcher who can be a free agent soon?

Buyer beware; if the Rays know this is his last year in Tampa, pitch counts will go out the window; why preserve his arm so he can pitch for someone else against you?

                            2) Early line on next year’s Super Bowl from William Hill Sports (I’m not making this up); NFC -3.5, over/under of 50.

                            1) Only 212 days until the 2014 NFL season opens on a Thursday night in Seattle, I’m guessing against the rival 49ers.

                              Tuesday, February 4

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Letdown spot

Brooklyn slumped through the first two months of the season, but once the calendar changed to 2014, the Nets got hot. They started the New Year by winning 10 of their first 11 games and that built their confidence. Brooklyn was written off early, but it is starting to play up to its expectations.

The Nets haven’t played in too many spotlight games this season, but they will Thursday night when they host the San Antonio Spurs. Brooklyn will be playing with revenge after losing by 21 points (113-92) to the Spurs on New Year’s Eve. This is a big game for Brooklyn and with a game the following night in Detroit, the Nets may not be fully focused on the Pistons.

                              Lookahead spot

The Minnesota Timberwolves have two high-profile games this week. The first comes Wednesday when the Timberwolves play in Oklahoma City against the Thunder. The second comes Saturday night when they host Portland. Both of those games are revenge spots for Minnesota as it has recently lost to both of those teams.

Minnesota has a game sandwiched between Oklahoma City and Portland, and it comes Friday night in New Orleans. The Timberwolves just beat the Pelicans 88-77 at home on January 29. Off their game in Oklahoma City, the Timberwolves will likely be overlooking New Orleans Friday night, especially with Portland on deck the following night.

                              Schedule spot

The Houston Rockets will be a focused team Wednesday when they host the Phoenix Suns. The Rockets will be going into that game on three full days of rest while the Suns will be playing on a back-to-back set.

Houston will also be playing with revenge after losing at home to Phoenix 97-88 the last time they played. The Rockets only have two games this week, so we can be assured they’ll be rested and ready for a peak performance in this game.
