Top 10 - Stock Watch

It’s time to really pay attention to teams that are sitting on the bubble. A win over a highly-ranked team can almost certainly guarantee your chances to play in March. There are a few games this week that fit the criteria.

Let’s take a look…

1) Syracuse: (23-0 SU, 12-6-1 ATS) - SELL

The Orange will be tested this week as they travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and play on one of the best home court advantages in college basketball. I believe Syracuse will suffer its first loss. Hell…I’m not even sure the Orange will or should be favored.

2) Arizona: (23-1 SU, 14-9-0 ATS) - SELL

Arizona losing forward Brandon Ashley will hurt them on the defensive side and it will be noticeable on Friday when the Wildcats travel to Tempe to play the Sun Devils. The Devils are on the bubble and need this win desperately…That’s bad news for Sean Miller and company. I believe ASU wins outright.

3) Florida: (21-2 SU, 9-9-1 ATS) - SELL

Similar to Syracuse and Arizona, the Gators will have similar problems as they travel to Knoxville on Tuesday to play a Tennessee team that frantically needs a marquee win.

4) Wichita State: (25-0 SU, 16-5-1 ATS) - BUY

The Shockers did something I didn’t think they could do, which is remain undefeated after playing on the road against Indiana State and Northern Illinois last week. It’s very clear that Wichita State wants a spot in the Final Four again. I don’t see them losing, but they may need style points if they want a No. 1 seed, so look for the Shockers to make a statement with their victories.

5) San Diego State: (21-1 SU, 12-7 ATS) - HOLD

I’m hesitating on betting the Aztecs this week. They travel to Wyoming on Tuesday and if they’re not careful they could find themselves in a comeback situation, similar to the Boise State game of last week. Let’s see if they’ve learned from their mistakes and play hard for all 40 minutes.

6) Villanova (21-2 SU, 16-5 ATS) - SELL

I’m not sure what Nova’s AD was thinking, but the Wildcats do no play on campus (the Pavilion) for the remaining of the season. Talk about not playing to your advantage! Just on that idiotic decision alone I’m selling.

7) Kansas (18-6 SU, 12-11-1 ATS) - BUY

The Jayhawks should be able to handle business at home against TCU. Next week will be a different story. For now, I’m buying…but that will change, especially with their ATS record.


8) Duke (19-5 SU, 16-8- ATS) - BUY

Coach K has finally got his team moving in the right direction. Although they lost to Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, they’re improving and becoming the Duke we all know. I see more of the same this week against North Carolina and Maryland.

9) Michigan State (20-4 SU, 13-8-2 ATS) - HOLD

The Spartans have been up and down these last three weeks, especially against the spread. Now they are back at home playing the bottom part of the conference, Northwestern and Nebraska. Although I believe they will win both games, the spreads will be heavy and too high for comfort. I’m watching.

10) Cincinnati (22-3 SU, 10-9 ATS) – BUY

In my last stock report, I said the Bearcats would be lucky to beat SMU. And lucky they weren’t. They play Houston at home Saturday. It shouldn’t be a problem to win or cover, but next week will be a challenge as they get Louisville at home. We’ll buy now because it could be the last time we do this month.

Duke at North Carolina

One of the premier rivalries in all of sports renews again tonight in Chapel Hill, where North Carolina will take on Duke in an ACC showdown at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

Most books opened Duke (19-5 straight up, 16-8 against the spread) as a one-point favorite late Tuesday afternoon. However, as of early this morning, most spots had the Blue Devils by 2.5.

North Carolina (16-7 SU, 12-11 ATS) has won 11 of its 14 home games while going 7-7 versus the number. The Tar Heels are coming off Saturday's 73-62 win at Notre Dame as 1.5-point road 'chalk.'

Roy Williams's squad has now five in a row both SU and ATS. I made UNC a 5.5-point favorite at Notre Dame, so I decided to pounce on UNC and the result was an easy winner.

James Michael McAdoo paced the winners with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Marcus Paige added 16 points and six assists.

Until steadying the ship with its current five-game run of success, North Carolina had been the toughest team to figure out in all of college basketball. During a three-week span from late November to early December, the Tar Heels picked up monster wins vs. Louisville (neutral court), at Michigan St. (by 14!) and vs. Kentucky.

But UNC also had several head-scratching defeats. The Tar Heels lost at UAB, in addition to home losses to Belmont and Miami. As it turns out, Belmont has a really solid squad (RPI of 60), but defeats to smaller schools at the Dean Dome aren't looked on fondly, regardless of the circumstances.

Duke is eighth in the RPI Rankings, while UNC is No. 37. The Blue Devils are 4-3 against RPI Top-50 opponents, including non-conference wins over UCLA and Michigan. They are 9-4 versus the RPI Top 100.

UNC is 4-3 against the RPI Top 50, 7-6 versus the Top 100.

Since losing two of its first three ACC games (at Notre Dame and at Clemson), Duke has been on a serious roll with seven wins in its last eight games. The only blemish during this surge was the epic 91-89 overtime loss at top-ranked Syracuse.

Duke has covered the spread in seven consecutive games, including Saturday night's 89-68 win at Boston College as a 9.5-point road 'chalk.' Jabari Parker was the catalyst with 29 points, 16 rebounds and three blocked shots in a dominant performance. Quinn Cook added 21 points by knocking down 5-of-7 attempts from 3-point range.

Duke doesn't take too many one-and-done players, but it has embraced the presence of Parker. He has rewarded them by leading the Blue Devils in scoring (19.2 points per game), rebounding (8.5 RPG) and blocked shots (1.2 per game).

Likewise, Coach K doesn't take too many transfers. In fact, Rodney Hood from Mississippi St. is just the fourth transfer during his tenure, joining Seth Curry, Dahntay Jones and Roshown McLeod. Hood has produced by averaging 16.5 PPG while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 45.0 percent from 3-point land.

Duke has been a road favorite four times, posting a 2-2 spread record. With that said, we should note four consecutive spread covers on the road, including a pair of 'dog spots (at 'Cuse and an outright win at Pitt).

Although UNC has seen the 'over' go 5-2 in its last seven games and 7-6 in home games at the Dean Dome, the 'under' still maintains a 12-10 overall ledger.

The 'over' has hit in four straight Duke games and seven of its last nine to improve to 12-11 overall.

Duke has beaten UNC in seven of the last nine meetings, including three in a row in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils cruised to a 69-53 win as two-point road 'dogs at UNC last year. McAdoo had a team-high 15 points for the Heels in the losing effort.

The 'under' is 8-2 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Auburn owns a 6-2-1 spread record in its last nine games as an underdog. The Tigers are 7-3 ATS at home. They play host to Kentucky tonight as 7.5-point underdogs.

-- UConn has won seven of its last nine games while compiling an 8-1 spread record. The Huskies are 15-point home favorites tonight vs. USF. They own a 6-1 spread record in seven games as double-digit favorites this year. The Bulls are 1-3 ATS as double-digit underdogs.

-- Oklahoma St. got run out of Austin early and often in an 87-68 loss at Texas last night. The Longhorns took the cash easily as four-point home favorites. Travis Ford's team looked like a Final Four contender in December, but now it is without Marcus Smart for two more games and a part of the bubble conversation.

--After getting smashed at Iowa on Saturday and falling behind by double digits in the first half at Ohio St. last night, Michigan rallied to capture a 70-60 win as a four-point road underdog.

-- Wyoming was the nation's tough-luck team last week, losing in overtime at New Mexico and by two at UNLV. But the Cowboys got things to go their way last night, ending San Diego St.'s 20-game winning streak by collecting a 68-62 triumph as four-point home 'dogs.

-- Florida won its 16th consecutive game Tuesday night at Tennessee, pulling away for a 67-58 victory as a two-point road favorite. The Gators improved to 22-2 overall and 11-0 in SEC. They will venture into Rupp Arena to face Kentucky this Saturday night.

-- There is a lot of speculation going on about the job security of Alabama fifth-year head coach Anthony Grant. As I've noted several times recently, I've been stunned by his lack of success in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide isn't going to the postseason this year unless it wins the SEC Tournament, and it has just one NCAA appearances and zero wins on Grant's watch. With that said, he has five years remaining on his contract at $1.9 million per season. That's a lot of greenbacks for Alabama to eat if it wants to get rid of him. The empty seats at Coleman Coliseum for last night's game at Ole Miss didn't help Grant's cause, but the final result might have. After allowing a six-point advantage to get away in the final 1:11, Trevor Releford buried a trey with 0.6 seconds left to lift the Tide to a 67-64 win over the Rebels. Releford scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half and had 14 of 'Bama's last 16.

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels (+2.5, 156)

North Carolina will try to run its record to 4-0 against the teams that opened the season ranked in the top four in the preseason coaches’ poll, hosting No. 9 Duke in a pivotal ACC game Wednesday night. The Tar Heels have already knocked off No. 8 Louisville, No. 10 Michigan State and No. 13 Kentucky, but will need another win against a ranked opponent for a chance to get back into the top 25. More importantly, a victory for North Carolina would bring the Tar Heels closer to the top four in the conference standings.

North Carolina has won five in a row, all by double digits, to get back into the thick of the ACC race. Duke had its own five-game winning streak in ACC play interrupted by a loss to top-ranked Syracuse on Feb. 1, but the Blue Devils have reeled off back-to-back wins against Wake Forest and Boston College. Jabari Parker is coming off career highs in points (29) and rebounds (16) in the win against Boston College.

WHY BET DUKE (19-5 SU, 16-8 ATS, 12-11 O/U): Rodney Hood loses a lot of attention to Parker, but the 6-8 sophomore forward might by the Blue Devils’ most consistent player. He’s coming off back-to-back games scoring in single digits for the first time this season, so look for the Mississippi native to be extra focused for his first game against the Tar Heels. The other sophomore forward for Duke, 6-9 Amile Jefferson, is up to 66 percent shooting from the floor this season after making all three of his attempts in Saturday’s win against Boston College.

WHY BET NORTH CAROLINA (16-7, 12-11 ATS, 10-12 O/U): James Michael McAdoo will likely get the task of trying to guard Hood or Jefferson at the outset. McAdoo hasn’t had any trouble with his offensive game in a while, reaching double figures in scoring the last 16 games. McAdoo has lost three out of four in his career against Duke, including both games on his home floor, so look for a top-notch effort from the 6-9 junior forward.

Duke-UNC draws three times more action than most NCAAB games

The Tobacco Road Rivalry between Duke and North Carolina hasn’t lost its spot atop college basketball’s most heated clashes, even if the Tar Heels are unranked heading into Wednesday’s home date against the Blue Devils.

Jeff Stoneback, sportsbook manager at the MGM Mirage, is expecting a significant bump in betting action for Wednesday’s college hoops handle, and Duke-UNC is the reason.

"Duke-UNC is one of the biggest matchups of our NCAA year and it draws one of our largest nights in terms of action where we can see around three times of what you could see for an average late season game,” Stoneback tells Covers.

"With college basketball you don't get as many rivalry games as you would see in college football and with Duke and North Carolina being the two schools with the biggest national brands, we generally see a spike in bets from the public whenever they play due to that big-game feel."

But just because Wednesday’s game has a wave of bad blood behind it, don’t expect books to treat the odds for Duke-UNC any differently. Stoneback says linemakers use the same process to set the spread for heated rivalries as they do for each regular season game.

Covers Expert Marc Lawrence echoed Stoneback's take, stating oddsmakers stick to their guns, basing the numbers on each teams’ current power ratings, key injuries, recent form, and home court.

"If (the oddsmaker) senses there will be a rush to one team or another due to public sentiment he will also adjust accordingly,” adds Lawrence.

Duke won both meetings with North Carolina last year but the road team covered the spread in each game. In fact, the last five meetings between the two have seen the road team cover, and going back long term, the visitor is 22-8 ATS in the last 30 installments of the Tobacco Road Rivalry.

Wednesday will mark the third straight time the two schools have met with North Carolina outside the Top 25 – a situation that hasn’t been kind to the Tar Heels. Duke has won 11 of those 12 matchups since 2000, going 7-5 ATS, with eight of those wins coming by double digits.

As for UNC being unranked for the second straight year, Stoneback doesn't think that will affect much Wednesday.

"UNC-Duke will always be one of, if not the biggest nights for college basketball, even if UNC is unranked based on the popularity of the programs,” he says.

Old Man Winter is making his way through North Carolina and could have a bit of an influence on Wednesday's meeting between Duke and UNC.

Per WFMYnews2.com, the game is currently slated to go but conditions will be monitored.

"There is no change. We are monitoring the situation with the ACC," UNC Senior Associate A.D. of Communications Steve Kirschner told WFMYnews2. "The league's policy is that if the teams and officials can get to the site safely then the game should be played. But we are keeping an eye on the forecast."

At the very least, however, this could impact travel for the Duke fans who wanted to make the trip.

Minnesota at Wisconsin

Wisconsin (19-5 straight up, 13-11 against the spread) will have revenge on its mind tonight when it hosts Minnesota in a Big Ten showdown. As of early this morning, most betting shops had the Badgers installed as 8.5-point favorites.

Bo Ryan's team raced out to a 16-0 start to the season before losing five of its next six games. Since then, Wisconsin has bounced back with consecutive wins, including Sunday's 60-58 non-covering triumph over Michigan St. as a four-point home favorite. Nigel Hayes paced the winners with 14 points.

Wisconsin hasn't been as tough at home this season. In fact, the Badgers had lost three in a row at Kohl Center before knocking off the Spartans. They are 11-3 SU and 6-8 ATS at home for the year.

Minnesota (16-8 SU, 8-11-1 ATS) has been an underdog eight times this year, posting a 3-5 record both SU and ATS. In seven true road assignments, the Gophers are 2-5 both SU and ATS. However, both of those stats are a big misleading.

That's because two of Minnesota's outright defeats and non-covers as a road underdog came in overtime. In fact, Richard Pitino's team lost by 12 to Michigan St. in OT at Breslin Center as a 10.5-point 'dog (now that's a brutal beat for gamblers that were on Minnesota!). In addition, the Gophers lost by three in OT at Purdue as 2.5-point puppies just last week.

The loss to the Boilermakers was the team's third straight, but it responded Saturday with a 66-60 home win over Indiana as a 4.5-point 'chalk.' Deandre Mathieu led Minnesota, which trailed IU by six at intermission, with 16 points and five assists. Maurice Walker added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Wisconsin is sixth in the RPI Rankings thanks to a 5-3 record against the Top 50 and 11-4 versus the Top 100. Minnesota is No. 39 in the RPI, going 3-4 against the Top 50 and 5-6 versus the Top 100.

Although the 'under' has cashed in four of its last five games, the 'over' is 12-11 overall for Wisconsin, 7-7 in its home games.

The 'under' is 10-8-1 overall for the Gophers.

Even though its leading scorer Andre Hollins injured his ankle in the first minute of the game and didn't return, Minnesota beat Wisconsin 81-68 as a three-point home underdog when these team met at The Barn on Jan. 22. The 149 combined points surged 'over' the 133.5-point total.

Walker led the Gophers with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Mathieu finished with 18 points, five board and three assists. The Gophers shot 58.9 percent from the field and were a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. Sam Dekker scored a game-high 20 points in the Badgers' losing effort.

Tip-off tonight in Madison is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- When Syracuse and Pitt met at the Carrier Dome last month, the Orange's freshman point guard Tyler Ennis took over at crunch time to lead his team to victory. On Wednesday at Pitt, the 'Cuse basically trailed the entire game. The Panthers went ahead by six with 1:55 remaining on a Lorenzo-Charles like tip-in (circa N.C. St. 1983) by Talib Zanna just before the shot clock expired. But a 7-0 run by the Orange put it briefly in front, only to see the Panthers regain a one-point lead on two free throws by Zanna with 4.4 seconds remaining. From there, Ennis took the ball into the frontcourt off the bounce and launched a running leaner in traffic from about 35 feet. As the buzzer sounded, the ball splashed the nets to allow Jim Boeheim's team to escape with its unbeaten record intact.

-- Pitt previously owned a perfect 9-0 record against top-five foes at the Petersen Events Center.

-- I thought the whistle that put Ennis at the free-throw line with 10.8 seconds remaining was total garbage. It was clearly a clean block up top and the other defender didn't move as Ennis created the contact. You shouldn't get the call on the road. He converted both to temporarily put the Orange in front by one.

-- When I try to think of a Syracuse point guard during Boeheim's tenure to compare Ennis to, I see some reminders of several school legends. He's got a little of the dribbling/penetration skills of Pearl Washington, some of the passing and decision-making of Sherman Douglas and the poise and shooting of Gerry McNamara (well, not quite as lethal from 3 as McNamara, but you get the point).

-- The Duke at UNC game that was postponed last night will be played next Thursday.

13) Syracuse 58, Pitt 56-- Tyler Ennis hit a dramatic 35-footer at buzzer to keep Orangemen unbeaten. Very hard-fought game; Panthers played their hearts out, and then had those hearts ripped out by Ennis.

12) Weather forced postponement of seven games, including UNC-Duke, which will be made up a week from today, the 20th. They had eight inches of snow at Pinehurst golf course in North Carolina.

11) Penn State 66, Indiana 65-- This score makes us wonder who Indiana will host in the first round of the NIT? Hoosiers led by 11 with 3:19 to go, just a horrific loss at home.

10) Kings 106, Knicks 101 ot-- Jimmer Fredette is from Glens Falls, 45 miles north of Armadillo World HQ, so I root for him; kid hasn't played a lot for the struggling Kings, but he went off last night, scoring 15 points in his first 7:00 on the floor, wound up with a career high 24 points.

Most Fredette had played all season was 21 minutes in a blowout loss to the Pacers last month. Against ther Knicks, Jimmer played 27 minutes, made six of nine behind the arc-- he can help some NBA team.

9) Texas Tech 68, Oklahoma 60-- Tubby's Red Raiders are 5-0 vs spread as a road underdog in league play. Bad home loss for the Sooners.

8) Indiana State 68, Bradley 62-- Sycamores are 19-6, 10-3 in Valley; they are hurt by Notre Dame's demise- they beat Irish before Grant flunked out, so that would've been a quality win, but isn't now.

7) VCU 92, George Washington 75-- Rams avenged earlier loss to GW, as VCU was 13-25 from arc and forced 22 Colonial turnovers.

6) Rockets 113, Wizards 112-- Trevor Ariza had 32 points, 11 rebounds for improved Wiz, but Harden scored 35, was 16-16 from line, getting winning hoop at 0:00.7 mark. Houston was 35-47 on line as team, is now 36-17.

5) Boise State 71, New Mexico 70-- San Diego State lost at Wyoming last night, now Lobos go down here, as Mountain West road claims couple of top teams as victims. Boise has had trouble finishing games of late, but Marks hit couple foul shots with 0:13 left for win here.

4) Nebraska 67 , Illinois 58-- Cornhuskers have now won four in a row at home, as Tim Miles rebuilds another program. Illinois is having a horrendous season- they should be better than this.

3) UConn 83, South Florida 40-- Scores like this get coaches fired. USF is a football school, but they should be competitive in this league. They're not.
