Ok gang..GOY goes off today and here is a sneak preview on the game:

                Cincinnati at Southern Methodist

To further increase its lead atop the American Athletic Conference, Cincinnati would have to become the first team to win at SMU this season.

The seventh-ranked Bearcats will also try for their first 16-game win streak in 12 seasons when they meet the Mustangs on Saturday night.

Behind one of the nation's best defenses and the high-scoring Sean Kilpatrick, Cincinnati (22-2, 11-0) has a 2 1/2-game lead over No. 14 Louisville in the AAC. The Cardinals, idle this weekend, will visit the Bearcats on Feb. 22.

SMU (18-5, 7-3) is in third place and has beaten two Top 25 opponents during its 12-0 start at home, its best since beginning 13-0 in the 1999-2000 season.

The Mustangs topped then-No. 17 Connecticut 74-65 on Jan. 4 and then-No. 22 Memphis 87-72 last Saturday, bolstering their chances for their first NCAA tournament berth since 1993.

"I'm just hopeful we can build this and make it special," coach Larry Brown said. "There's no reason why we can't be a premier program. We've just got to get people to believe in what we're doing."

This game matches the best defenses in the AAC. SMU is allowing the second-fewest points per game in the conference (61.3) behind Cincinnati's 56.8, which ranks fourth nationally. However, the Mustangs are second in the nation in opponents' field-goal percentage at 36.8, ahead of the Bearcats' 38.6.

Cincinnati struggled against the SMU defense on Jan. 1, shooting 36.5 percent overall and 4 of 16 from 3-point range in a 65-57 win in its AAC debut. The Bearcats hit 23 of 31 from the foul line while the Mustangs were 8 of 9.

Kilpatrick was 3 of 12 from the field and had 13 points, well below his conference-best 19.7 average.

Cincinnati wasn't ranked for that game, but now the Mustangs are looking to end a 31-game slide against Top 10 teams that dates to an 82-76 win over No. 7 Florida on Dec. 3, 1987.

The Bearcats are riding their second 15-game winning streak in four seasons but haven't had a longer one since a 20-game run in 2001-02. This is their best start since winning 26 of 28 that same season, and their league record is their best since finishing 16-0 in 1999-2000 in Conference USA.

Cincinnati has earned five road wins during AAC play, but the last four have been by an average of 3.8 points.

Kilpatrick has scored a combined 57 in the past two road wins. He had 26 points along with a career-high 12 rebounds in a 63-58 home win over No. 22 Connecticut on Thursday.

"The mark of a great player is them rising to the occasion, and he has the ability to do that," coach Mick Cronin said. "He is playing very smart and shooting well from the floor."

SMU earned its seventh win in eight games Thursday by blowing out visiting Temple 75-52. The Mustangs held the Owls to 30.3 percent shooting, the lowest by an opponent this season, while topping 54.0 percent in a second straight game.

Markus Kennedy tied Shawn Williams for the team scoring lead with 14 points. Kennedy, the team's second-leading scorer (12.2 ppg), was the only SMU player in double figures in the loss at Cincinnati with 12 points.

Nic Moore, averaging 13.7 points, was held to nine in the Mustangs' third loss in four all-time matchups.

Cincinnati is making its first visit to SMU.

                              • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Indianapolis Colts hired Rob Chudzinski, who the Browns fired after one season as head coach. Indy visits Cleveland next fall. Hmmmm

-- Bronson Arroyo got two years, $23.5M from Arizona, which had its fan fest this weekend-- 35,000 people showed up Saturday. Arroyo has never been on the DL in his 14-year big league career.

-- April's NASCAR race in Texas is the Duck Commander 500; they better not let Uncle Si drive the pace car.

-- There was a wind delay at the golf tournament at Pebble Beach; started raining, which cut the wind down, so they could play again. No one looked like they were having much fun.

-- Yesterday was the worst Saturday of TV sports in a long time; very few big matchups in college hoop, no 10/11 pm tipoffs on TV. Not good. The DirecTV/Pac-12 impasse better not extend to the SEC Network.

-- I'd watch the Caribbean baseball series on TV, except that ESPN hid it on ESPN Desportes- thats an event the MLB Network should have.

                                *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday

                                13) Texas Tech 65, Oklahoma State 61-- Marcus Smart shoved a fan who said something to him with 0:06 left to play. We're going to hear a lot about this-- Cowboys have now lost five of their last six games.

                                12) NC State 56, Miami 55-- Hurricanes missed a tying foul shot with 0:03 to play; Wolfpack grabbed the rebound, Kyle Washington appeared to elbow a Miami player in the face as he was fouled, but after an official review that had to take close to ten minutes, they didn't call a flagrant foul.

I thought it was the right call, but if that happened at any other time in the game, its called a flagrant foul, under the new, wimpier rules.

                                11) Pitt 62, Virginia Tech 57, double OT-- Hokies had 4-point lead with 0:40 left, but snatched defeat from jaws of victory by fouling a kid as he hit a 3-pointer with 0:34 left. Tech then went 0-13 from the floor in the two OTs. This wasn't a good game; neither team could make a shot.

Pitt's best player Patterson is playing hurt, scored five points.

                                10) Yale 74, Harvard 67-- Big upset here, as Crimson's 20-game home win streak ends. Ivy League doesn't have a tournament; these teams are both 5-1 with eight games to play. Rematch is at Yale; if teams tie for the league title, they have a playoff game at a neutral site.

                                9) SMU 76, Cincinnati 55-- Mustangs ended Cincy's 15-game win streak; looks like Larry Brown's team will make NCAAs, which probably means he will quit in April- he has never stayed with any one job for very long.

                                8) Kansas State 74, Texas 57--- Longhorns were down 39-18 at the half, as their 7-game win streak ends. Marcus Foster was 13-16, had 34 points for the Wildcats. Not too many easy outs in the Big X.

                                7) Arkansas 77, Vanderbilt 75-- Bench scoring was 40-2, Hogs; Qualls hit a 3 with 0;02.6 left for the win, after a series of questionable calls had gone for Vandy down the stretch. Having benches on the baseline makes game harder to coach, but provides more courtside seats to charge fans top dollar for.

                                6) Referees use replay as a crutch far tooo often; there are three of them making serious money; they can't not see so many things that they have to go to replay as much as they do. Coaches are also asking for reviews they don't care about to get extra timeouts.

Last thing college basketball needs are more timeouts.

                                5) St Joe's 69, VCU 62-- Hawks are using only six guys, since they've got three players out hurt; DeAndre Bembry was everywhere in this game- he had 18 points and a ton of energy plays.

                                4) Duke 89, Boston College 68-- Not sure why BC is in the ACC, not sure why they hired an Ivy League coach who apparently can't recruit ACC-level players. At least Al Skinner brought in kids who could compete athletically.

                                3) Minnesota 66, Indiana 60-- Gophers snapped a 3-game skid with Rick Pitino in attendance watching his son coach- he was sitting next to one of his other sons, who was dressed in a chicken suit. Minnesota's gym is called the Barn, so the students dress up as farm animals. Ah, college.....

                                2) Bad Beat of the Day: Arizona State (-3.5) 74, Oregon 72: Ducks were down 20 at the half, rallied to tie game, then covered in a losing cause.

                                1) Iowa State 84, TCU 69-- Melvin Ejim was Player of the Day, with 48 points, 18 rebounds against a Horned Frog team that is in over its head in the Big X-- they're very far behind the second-worst team in this league.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
