Coyotes at Stars: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars (-144, 5.5)

The Dallas Stars look to complete a successful surge toward the Olympic break when they host the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday. The Stars have posted a 5-1-2 mark over their last eight games and have enjoyed considerable success versus Pacific Division representatives (12-2-3) to boot. Dallas skated to a 3-1 triumph over Phoenix on Tuesday before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to San Jose the following night.

The Coyotes moved back ahead of the Stars in the congested Western Conference standings with a 2-0 triumph over Chicago on Friday. Mike Smith turned aside all 30 shots he faced for his 26th career shutout and Antoine Vermette notched an assist to extend his career-best point streak to nine games. Vermette, who netted his team's lone tally versus the Stars on Tuesday, has registered eight goals and four assists during the stretch.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Plus Arizona (Phoenix), KTZA (Dallas)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (27-20-10): In addition to naming Smith the starter against Dallas, coach Dave Tippett said after Friday's game that Martin Hanzal (illness) is expected to face the Stars while defenseman Derek Morris will miss Saturday's tilt after suffering an upper-body injury against the Blackhawks. Smith had no issue with back-to-back duty and welcomed the challenge prior to the Winter Olympics. "I'm never satisfied," he said. "I played well but just when you think you've got it, it can turn so I'm not going to look too far ahead."

ABOUT THE STARS (26-21-10): Dallas is doing its best to clamp down on defense, holding opponents to just under 23 shots per game in its last 10 contests. Considering the Stars averaged 30-plus per contest each of the last four years, the team seems to be embracing a more conservative way of play. "I think we've got more patience," coach Lindy Ruff told the Dallas Morning News. "I think there were times we went at it too hard instead of taking chances when they come."

    TRENDS:

    * Under is 11-3-1 in the last 15 meetings.
    * Coyotes are 3-13 in their last 16 games following a win.
    * Stars are 5-1 in their last six vs. Pacific.
    * Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

    OVERTIME:

    1. Dallas C Tyler Seguin is riding a seven-game point streak (three goals, eight assists).

    2. Phoenix has recorded at least one power-play goal in 13 of its last 16 contests.

    3. The Stars yielded only three goals during their three-game road trip (2-0-1).

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Letdown spot

This might be a bit of a stretch, but letdown spots are difficult to find following a two-plus week break - with that being said, I believe Carey Price could be in for a less-than-stellar effort against the Red Wings on Wednesday night (provided he starts).

There's obviously a substantial drop-off from Team Canada's stellar defense to the Habs shaky blue line corps. Price will find that out in a hurry.

The Red Wings are banged-up but still pose a formidable challenge.

          Lookahead spot

Toronto will begin its post-Olympic journey with a stop in Long Island to face the Islanders on Thursday night. Here's thinking the Leafs will have one eye on Saturday's showdown in Montreal, however.

The break couldn't have come at a much worse time for the Leafs, as they had been rolling prior, winners of five of their last six games. Facing a John Tavares-less Isles squad likely won't draw a ton of motivation on Thursday night - even if it is their first game in weeks.

          Schedule spot

I'll back a team in a favorable scheduling spot for a change this week.

The Ducks will have been home and cool for nearly three weeks (those that didn't compete in Sochi at least) when they take the ice on Friday night against the Blues, and boy has Anaheim had St. Louis' number this season, taking both previous meetings - both in enemy territory no less.

St. Louis travels to Vancouver for a tough matchup with the Canucks on Wednesday before shuffling off to Anaheim.

NHL Top 6: Teams affected by the winter break
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL regular season goes into hibernation after this weekend as the best players in the world head to Sochi, Russia to take part in the 2014 Olympic tournament.

A handful of teams have to be thrilled at the prospect of putting the season on pause for a while. The combination of injuries and poor play has left some clubs in shambles as they sputter toward the final pre-break weekend. Conversely, several teams will be sad to see their momentum halted by the hiatus.

Here are three teams happy to have the time off, along with three that would rather play on:

                Cold Teams

                Los Angeles Kings

The 2012 Stanley Cup champions may want to use the two weeks off to search for their missing offense. Los Angeles heads into Thursday's action in utter disarray, having scored just six goals in its previous seven games. The lengthy dry spell has dropped the Kings to second-last in the NHL in average offense (2.2 goals per game), as several of their big guns have misfired mightily since the beginning of the new year. Los Angeles entertains Columbus on Thursday.

                New York Islanders

The Islanders may have finally run out of gas after showing glimpses of brilliance for most of the season. The offense bottomed out in 2-1 and 4-1 losses to the rival Rangers while the defense and goaltending have been disappointingly porous of late, surrendering 21 goals over the course of their five-game losing streak. Things won't get any easier for New York in its final stretch prior to the break, with a game in Washington followed by home dates against the red-hot Calgary Flames and dangerous Colorado Avalanche.

                Montreal Canadiens

Canadiens fans find themselves in a quandary as they prepare for the regular season to shut down. Their team has stumbled to a 6-8-3 mark since late-December, but one of the culprits behind the team's struggles - netminder Carey Price - probably isn't going to get any time to rest. Price has been tabbed as one of Team Canada's three netminders and should draw at least one starting assignment in Russia. The Canadiens have a busy final week ahead, hosting the Flames and Vancouver Canucks before facing the surging Carolina Hurricanes.

                Hot Teams

                Calgary Flames

It's just the Flames' luck that they enjoy their hottest stretch of the season just as the calendar shifts to Olympic time. The Flames are riding a five-game winning streak coming into the week and, while it may not be enough to move them back into the playoff picture, it should help the confidence level of a roster featuring a number of young impact players. The perfect homestand included impressive victories over west powers Chicago and San Jose, providing plenty of momentum heading into this week's trip through Montreal, Long Island and Philadelphia.

                Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto has been one of the NHL's hottest teams since mid-January, earning wins in nine of its last 11 contests - including a perfect three-game homestand in which the Maple Leafs eked past Tampa Bay before defeating Florida and Ottawa by identical 6-3 scores. The offense has been rolling along at its best pace of the season, scoring at least three goals in nine of the past 10 games to take plenty of pressure off the defense and goaltending. The Maple Leafs wrap up their pre-Olympic schedule with games in Florida and Tampa and a home game against Vancouver.

                Winnipeg Jets

Continuing the theme of Canadian teams playing well as the Olympic hiatus approaches, the Jets have been one of the league's most pleasant surprises since switching head coaches. Paul Maurice has lit a fire under the Winnipeg players, taking over for the departed Claude Noel and leading the Jets to an 8-2-0 record in his tenure. Winnipeg is excelling at both ends of the ice and has wins over Anaheim and Chicago to its credit over that stretch. The Jets' pre-break schedule features road games in Carolina, Washington and St. Louis.

                        Wednesday, February 26

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NHL teams feeling the biggest effects of the Olympics
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the two-week Olympic break finally drawing to an end, it's back to normal for the majority of NHL teams - but not all of them.

A handful of clubs were profoundly affected by the break, and NHL bettors should keep a close eye on these teams as action resumes this week. Here are the five teams impacted the most by the break and the fallout from the Olympic tournament:

New York Islanders (22-30-8, 14th in the East)

Islanders GM Garth Snow isn't a happy guy these days after watching John Tavares - his star forward and captain - suffer a season-ending knee injury in Canada's quarterfinal win over Latvia. Tavares was slumping prior to the break, scoring once and adding an assist in six games, but is still third in the NHL in scoring. The Islanders were considered a long shot at best to reach the postseason, sitting 12 points out of eighth, but the Tavares injury erases what little hope they had.

Detroit Red Wings (26-20-12, 8th in the East)

The Red Wings are in a better position than the Islanders at the moment, but that could very well change. Their captain, Henrik Zetterberg, played through a herniated disk in his back during Sweden's tournament-opening victory over the Czech Republic but withdrew from the tournament shortly after. He underwent surgery last week and won't be evaluated for another eight weeks, putting his return this season - and Detroit's playoff hopes - in serious jeopardy.

Chicago Blackhawks (35-11-14, 3rd in the West)

The Blackhawks had a whopping 10 players selected to the various Olympic teams, including six - Sweden's Marcus Kruger, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya and Canada's Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Duncan Keith - who played for the teams that tangled for gold. That means a lot of extra games and travel miles to deal with. And, with Chicago in a fight for top spot in the conference, that can only be a hindrance.

Ottawa Senators (26-22-11, T-9th in the East)

The Senators could see a significant difference in their post-Olympic fortunes based primarily on how they weren't affected by the break. Ottawa sent just two players to Sochi - tied with Florida and Nashville for the fewest of any NHL team - and one of them, Milan Michalek of the Czech Republic, didn't make it past the quarterfinals. The other, Swedish defenseman Erik Karlsson, may have been the best player in the tournament, and at 23 should still have fresh legs.

Tampa Bay Lightning (33-20-5, 3rd in the East)

The Lightning could have been facing a major crisis after forward Martin St. Louis reportedly asked for a trade when he was initially left off the Team Canada roster by his own GM, Steve Yzerman. St. Louis was later added as an injury replacement, and would go on to help the Canadians repeat as gold medalists. With a satisfied St. Louis in the fold and injured Steven Stamkos benefiting from the extended time off, the Lightning appear primed for a run at top spot in the East.
