Sabres deal Miller, Ott to Blues

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An emotional Ryan Miller said goodbye to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night while embracing the challenge ahead of him with the St. Louis Blues.

The Sabres traded their star goaltender and captain Steve Ott to the Blues for goaltender Jaroslav Halak, forwards Chris Stewart and William Carrier, a 2015 first-round draft pick and a conditional draft pick.

"I'm just very emotional right now," Miller said. "I think it's been 12 years with this organization and I'm very excited for an opportunity to have a new adventure, a new opportunity. I have a strong sense that they have a very special team."

Miller, 33, has been the face of the Sabres' franchise for the past decade. A two-time All-Star, the 12-year veteran has a career record of 284-186-57 with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. He won the Vezina Trophy in 2010 as the NHL's top goaltender.

"This is where I grew up and where I've had a lot of moments in my life, and things obviously are forever going to be tied to this part of the world," Miller said. "I hope to continue that relationship as best I can moving forward."

The trade further establishes the Blues as a Stanley Cup contender. St. Louis is tied with Chicago for the Central Division lead with 84 points and has three games in hand on the Blackhawks.

Ott, 31, is an 11-year veteran who joined the Sabres in 2012. He has 264 points (103 goals, 161 assists) in 673 career games.

Both Miller and Ott are in the last year of their contracts, making trades inevitable for the last-place Sabres. The Sabres are 30th in the NHL with 44 points (18-34-8).

"We've kind of been prepared for this," Ott said. "To have that opportunity to go along with Ryan for myself personally, I know how great he is and both of us want to live up to expectations, and I know we're both focused to do so."

Both players were late scratches for Buffalo's game on Friday night against the San Jose Sharks. The trade was announced shortly after 7 p.m.

The Sabres received a starting goaltender in return in Halak. The 28-year-old has a 139-81-26 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in eight NHL seasons. He has acquired by St. Louis from the Montreal Canadiens after the 2009-10 season.

Stewart, 26, has spent parts of the last four seasons with the Blues. A first-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2006, Stewart has 228 points (115 goals, 113 assists) in 377 career games.

Carrier, 19, was drafted 57th overall in 2013 by the Blues.

This was the first trade for Sabres general manager Tim Murray since taking over for Darcy Regier in January.

"There's lots of future in it," Murray said. "And the 2015 first-round (pick) we believe is a strong pick. We have a starting goalie coming back in Halak, who has been I believe pretty well thought of in his career. We have a power forward coming back who is not old, who has term left, who in the past has put up goals. Plays a physical game, a gritty game, can fight. ... So a couple high picks, a couple players that can play for us right now and can help us."

The conditional pick can become a 2014 first-round pick if Miller re-signs with the Blues or if the Blues make the Western Conference Finals, the Sabres said.

Panthers have yet to decipher Blue Jackets

The Florida Panthers have lost six straight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. During those six straight losses, the Panthers have managed only seven goals compared to the Blue Jackets' 16.

The Panthers open as big road dogs (+165) against the Blue Jackets (-180) Saturday.

Rangers, D Girardi agree on six-year extension

Defenseman Dan Girardi reached agreement with the New York Rangers on a six-year, $33 million contract extension on Friday.

The 29-year-old Girardi was to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

"Dan has been a Ranger for his entire career, signing with us as an undrafted free agent and working his way to become a top defenseman in the NHL," Rangers general manager Glen Sather said. "His dedication to this club, as a leader both on the ice and in the locker room, is invaluable to this team. We are happy to have been able to ensure that he will continue to wear the Blueshirt."

Girardi has seen action in 60 games this season and totaled four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. The durable defenseman has missed only four regular-season games in the previous six seasons.

Leafs and Canadiens trend Over the past two seasons

When the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Bell Centre to face the Montreal Canadiens, you can be sure of fireworks Saturday. During their last seven meetings, the Leafs and Habs have gone Over six times.

During that stretch the Leafs and Habs have averaged 6.43 goals per game.

        • Game of the Day: Senators at Canucks

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-135, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators kick off a four-game road trip through Western Canada on Sunday when they head outdoors to face the Vancouver Canucks in the Heritage Classic. The Canucks traditionally play at Rogers Arena but will shift next door to compete under the retractable-roof stadium at BC Place, which is the home of the Canadian Football League's BC Lions. "I played outdoors in the (American Hockey League) and it was awesome," Senators center Zack Smith said. "It was different, a lot of fun and it's still competitive because there's two points on the line."

Vancouver can certainly use the two points as it fell for the eighth time in nine outings with a 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Friday. The lack of offense has plagued the Canucks, who have mustered just six goals in the last six contests. Vancouver seems to find its stride against Ottawa, as it posted a 5-2 triumph on Nov. 28 for its sixth straight win versus the Senators and 10th in 11 meetings.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Canucks opened as -135 home faves. The total opened at 5.5 goals.

          COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Senators(-129) / Canucks (-141)

INJURY WATCH: Senators - Craig Anderson (Ques. - Personal), Canucks - Yannick Weber (Ques. - Undisclosed), Mike Santorelli (IR - Shoulder)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "These are two teams on the outside of the playoff picture and are looking in. Every game from here on out is a playoff game for them." Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Motivation will be on Ottawa's side following its 6-1 drubbing at the hands of the Red Wings on Thursday night. With that being said, Vancouver will also be looking to rebound following a tough 2-1 home loss to Minnesota on Friday. The Sens could catch a break here, as the Canucks simply can't find the back of the net right now, scoring two goals or less in six consecutive games. Vancouver in a mid-range favorite - certainly not offering much in the way of value, even as they host this edition of the Heritage Classic." Covers Experts' Sean Murphy.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (26-23-11 SU, 27-33 ATS, 35-24 O/U): Although Ottawa is the road team, Kyle Turris was more than happy to return home. "To play in any outdoor game is something different and special, but to play in my hometown against the Canucks, it’s going to be really special," the New Westminster (B.C.) native told The Province. "I’m really looking forward to it. I could never imagine an outdoor game in Vancouver, but it’s going to be really cool. I haven’t even seen B.C. Place since it has been redone." Turris has scored a career-high 19 goals this season, but has just a tally and an assist in his last six contests.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (28-24-10 SU, 24-38 ATS, 20-34 O/U): Captain Henrik and Daniel Sedin will see some familiar faces in attendance on Sunday as parents Tommy and Tora made the trek from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. "They come over once or twice (per year)," Henrik Sedin said. "They timed it to come to the outdoor game." Perhaps their parents can also bring a bit of good fortune for the struggling duo as Henrik has failed to tally in his last 19 games and Daniel's drought stands at 21 contests - although the latter scored in the previous meeting.

Goalies might have take the day off Sunday as a gluttony of goals were scored yesterday in NHL action, resulting in all eight games going over the game total.

Games going over the game total has been a strong trend the last seven days, with teams compiling a 25-13 over/under record, hitting at a mark of almost 66 percent.
